Ultrasonic properties of coarse-grained austenite are critical to the quantitative nondestructive testing and evaluation of cast austenitic stainless steel (CASS). However, the orientation-dependent information is quite difficult to acquire from polycrystalline materials. Here a grain-scale measurement technique was developed based on electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and water-immersion focusing ultrasonic testing. 2-D angular distributions of the longitudinal wave velocity and attenuation coefficient in (0 1 0) plane were obtained respectively, which were correlated with the top-view and side-view orientation of columnar austenite grains. 〈1 0 1〉 orientation presented the largest velocity 6210 m/s and the smallest attenuation coefficient 1.9 dB/mm, while 〈0 0 1〉 reversed. The data deviation and universality were discussed.
