A case study of preliminary damage detection of two heritage vaults trough geometric deformation analysis on 3D point clouds

Masonry vaults are common structural elements in heritage buildings that, given their long lifespan, are susceptible to the accumulation of damages and deformations from diverse actions such as overloads, support movements, seismic action, etc. The use of 3D point clouds from terrestrial laser scanners and structure from motion photogrammetry survey to investigate these deformations can offer valuable information for structural assessment and conservation, particularly when historical information is limited. The analysis of the deviation measured between the surveyed as-built point cloud of a vault and a reference geometry could reveal deformation patterns. Those, compared with recurring damage mechanisms discussed in literature, can provide a preliminary identification of the damage mechanisms affecting a structure, and the evaluation guide the recognition of the underlying action. The aim of this paper is to investigate how to generate different reference geometries and the impacts of their choice as reference geometry for the identification and quantification of different deformations. Deviation analyses were performed on the main vaults of two different churches with different reference geometries (i.e., geometries derived from the survey and geometrical primitives fitted on point-cloud), and the results were discussed by comparing the deviation maps obtained with the crack pattern and the already known deformations of the buildings.

In-situ observation and quantification of membrane deformation in reverse osmosis, using optical coherence tomography

Deformation of the membrane can seriously hamper the performance of a reverse osmosis process. Currently, the most used approach to obtain detailed information on membrane deformation is by conducting membrane autopsy. However, ex-situ analysis can only observe irreversible deformation. In this study, optical coherence tomography (OCT) was introduced as method for in-situ 3D visualization and quantification of membrane and feed channel deformation during operation with varying transmembrane pressure (0–55 bar). In-situ monitoring of membrane surface geometry in a lab-scale flow-cell revealed the formation of specific patterns with ridges and valleys. The deformation became more pronounced with increasing applied pressure, due to membrane intrusion into the permeate spacer. The asymmetric structure of the permeate spacer causes a clear distinction in spatial distribution of ridges and valleys, depending on which side faces the membrane. Interestingly, membrane surface displacement increased linearly with TMP, with slope depending on spacer orientation (A vs B) and type (BW vs SW). Under pressure, we found the following displacements: Ridge – BW-A 1.7 ± 0.1 μm/bar, BW-B 1.9 ± 0.1 μm/bar, SW-A&B 1.5 ± 0.3 μm/bar; Valley – BW-A 3.2 ± 0.1 μm/bar, BW-B 2.7 ± 0.1 μm/bar, SW-A 1.7 ± 0.2 μm/bar, SW-B 1.8 ± 0.3 μm/bar. Measuring the membrane position under pressure revealed that the displacement involves the whole membrane-permeate spacer structure, i.e., the permeate spacer is also deformed. By alternating high and low feed pressure, we could distinguish between reversible and irreversible deformation. In-situ measurement of membrane deformation can contribute to understanding of pressure related performance and can serve as input for advanced modeling.

Three-Dimensional Measurements Of Deformable Oil Droplets In Turbulence

This work introduces an experimental facility designed to generate turbulence with a high energy dissipation rate of up to 0.3 m^2/s^3 , sufficient to induce deformation and fragmentation of oil droplets. The turbulence is produced by opposing arrays consisting of 24 jet streams in total, each with Reynolds numbers ranging from 12,000 to 50,000. Flow regimes are determined using 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) conducted in the center of the octagonal test section. The statistical analysis of the turbulence reveals a nearly homogeneous and isotropic nature. A 3D imaging system, equipped with six high-speed cameras, allows for the reconstruction of droplets using the multiple algebraic reconstruction technique algorithm, fostering both visualization and quantification of interface deformation. Additionally, the system enables the tracking of the breakup process. The presented setup is able to couple the measurements of the droplet shapes with surrounding turbulence in 3D dproplet topology reconstruction coupled with surrounding flow measurements. We demonstrate the capability of our imaging system and reconstruction methods for multiphase flow studies with an example of full 3D droplet topology reconstruction coupled with surrounding flow measurements.

Mafic microgranular enclaves and magmatic fabrics in the Ediacaran granitoids of Saghro, Eastern Anti-Atlas: Insights into magma emplacement and tectonic evolution

The Saghro inlier in the Anti-Atlas belt of Morocco comprises several granitoids dating from 600 to 550 million years ago (Ma), which are overlain by a volcano-sedimentary series. In particular, the granodioritic plutons exhibit widespread enclaves, which is a tool for emplacements mode and magma interaction processus during the Ediacaran evolution of the Anti-Atlas belt. This paper presents a detailed field mapping, petrographic analysis, and deformation quantification of the mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) and their host granitoids to characterize the emplacement mode of the plutons and the origin of MMEs.Macroscopically, the MMEs are rounded to ellipsoidal shapes and characterized by sharp, crenulated contacts, fine-grained textures, and some of them include fragments of host rock and feldspar xenocrysts. Petrographically, the MMEs exhibit a range of compositions from gabbroic to quartz diorite, and they are characterized by the presence of acicular apatite, quartz-feldspar ocelli, poikilitic and zoned plagioclases, which are the result of mixing/mingling of mafic and felsic magmas during the genesis of MMEs. The magmatic structures and enclave's organization in Saghro granitoids indicate two styles of emplacement. The c. 600 Ma Iknioun granodiorite exhibits an S-sigmoidal structure, representative of a syntectonic emplacement model within a transpressive dextral movement along E-W shear zones. While, in the 580-560 Ma Oussilkane, Tagmout, Igoudrane, and Bou Teglimt plutons, the organization of magmatic flow and orientations of enclaves suggest that the magma was emplaced as a post-tectonic dome. The variation in emplacement mode and the decrease in deformation intensity from the c. a. 600 Ma in the Iknioun pluton to the 580-560 Ma for the others plutons indicate a progressive shift in deformation regime from transpressive during the middle Ediacaran to a transtensive regime in the late Ediacaran, highlighting the progressive transition from Pan-African/Cadomian orogeny to Cambrian rifting.

Present-day kinematics of the northwest Moroccan Atlantic Margin from GNSS data: west southwest extrusion at the western end of the High Atlas

The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has emerged as a practical and effective technique for studying slow and steady geodynamic movements, enabling continuous monitoring and precise quantification of deformation over different timescales. In Morocco, a network of GNSS stations has been established, offering valuable insights into tectonic processes. This paper focuses on investigating the geodynamic motion of the northwest Moroccan Atlantic Margin. By utilizing GNSS data, subsidence rates and horizontal velocity fields were determined for the first time, providing valuable information for oil and gas exploration activities. The study reveals an active uplift rate of 1 mm/year and a westward horizontal motion of 2.04 mm/year in the Essaouira segment. The paper presents a case study of the Essaouira–Agadir basin (EAB) onshore segment and investigates the anomalous displacement observed in this region compared to other coastal GNSS stations. Possible explanations for the observed movements include local processes such as salt tectonics and regional northwest–southeast compression related to Africa–Eurasia convergence. We suggest that the anomalous movement detected in this work is due to the regional northwest–southeast compression related to Africa–Eurasia convergence imparting an extrusion of the EAB to the west. This research contributes to a better understanding of the geodynamics in the northwest Moroccan Atlantic margin, thereby providing valuable insights for ongoing efforts in oil and gas exploration. Furthermore, it indicates the continued activity of the Agadir fault, which would exhibit a sinistral wrench movement, thus posing a threat to the city of Agadir and its inhabitants.

An AFM-based approach for quantification of guest particle deformation during mechano-fusion

During the mechano-fusion process for dry particle coating, (hetero)-aggregates are formed consisting of host particles coated by smaller guest particles. During this process, the latter are exposed to intense particle–particle interactions and particle–wall impacts, which lead to deformation of their original shape. These deformations on the nano- and microscale can heavily influence the effective macroscopic properties of the resulting coated particles. We present a method for quantification of shape deformation based on measurements acquired by atomic force microscopy and apply it to guest particles during mechano-fusion. The 3D shape of guest particles is reconstructed by means of an ellipsoidal fit. Using these reconstructed shapes, we quantify the degree of deformation by comparing the aspect ratios of the ellipsoidal fits before and after mechano-fusion. Such a quantification enhances the understanding of how process-related parameters influence geometric descriptors of involved particles, which in turn impacts overall macroscopic properties of the material.

A Digital Image Correlation Technique for Laboratory Structural Tests and Applications: A Systematic Literature Review

Digital image correlation (DIC) is an optical technique used to measure surface displacements and strains in materials and structures. This technique has demonstrated significant utility in structural examination and monitoring. This manuscript offers a comprehensive review of the contemporary research and applications that have leveraged the DIC technique in laboratory-based structural tests. The reviewed works encompass a broad spectrum of structural components, such as concrete beams, columns, pillars, masonry walls, infills, composite materials, structural joints, steel beams, slabs, and other structural elements. These investigations have underscored the efficacy of DIC as a metrological instrument for the precise quantification of surface deformation and strain in these structural components. Moreover, the constraints of the DIC technique have been highlighted, especially in scenarios involving extensive or complex test configurations. Notwithstanding these constraints, the effectiveness of the DIC methodology has been validated as a strain measurement instrument, offering numerous benefits such as non-invasive operation, full-field measurement capability, high precision, real-time surveillance, and compatibility with integration into other measurement instruments and methodologies.

Left ventricular dyssynchrony measured by cardiovascular magnetic resonance-feature tracking in anterior ST-elevation myocardial infarction: relationship with microvascular occlusion myocardial damage.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance-feature tracking (CMR-FT) enables quantification of myocardial deformation and may be used as an objective measure of myocardial involvement in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We sought to investigate the associations between myocardial dyssynchrony parameters and myocardium damage for STEMI. We analyzed 65 patients (45-80 years old) with anterior STEMI after primary percutaneous coronary intervention during 3-7 days [observational (STEMI) group] and 60 healthy volunteers [normal control (NC) group]. Myocardial dyssynchrony parameters were derived, including global and regional strain, radial rebound stretch and displacement, systolic septal time delay, and circumferential stretch. CMR characteristics, including morphologic parameters such as left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (45.3% ± 8.2%) and myocardium damage in late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) (19.4% ± 4.7% LV), were assessed in the observation group. The global radial strain (GRS) and global longitudinal strain (GLS) substantially decreased in anterior STEMI compared with the NC group (GRS: 19.4% ± 5.1% vs. 24.8% ± 4.0%, P < 0.05; GLS: -10.1% ± 1.7% vs. -13.7% ± 1.0%, P < 0.05). Among 362 infarcted segments, radial and circumferential peak strains of the infarcted zone were the lowest (14.4% ± 3.2% and -10.7% ± 1.6%, respectively). The radial peak displacement of the infarct zone significantly decreased (2.6 ± 0.4 mm) (P < 0.001) and manifested in the circumferential displacement (3.5° ± 0.7°) in the STEMI group (P < 0.01). As microvascular occlusion (MVO) was additionally present, some strain parameters were significantly impaired in LGE+/MVO+ segments (radial strain [RS]: 12.2% ± 2.1%, circumferential strain [CS]: -9.6% ± 0.7%, longitudinal strain [LS]: -6.8% ± 1.0%) compared to LGE+/MVO- (RS: 14.6% ± 3.2%, CS: -10.8% ± 1.8%, LS: -9.2% ± 1.3%) (P < 0.05). When the extent of transmural myocardial infarction is greater than 75%, the parameter of the systolic septal delay (mean, 148 ms) was significantly reduced compared to fewer degrees of infarction (P < 0.01). In anterior STEMI, the infarcted septum swings in a bimodal mode, and myocardial injury reduces the radial strain contractility. A more than 75% transmural degree was the septal strain-contraction reserve cut-off point.

Failure modeling and reliability analysis for motion mechanism with clearance joints under plastic deformation and wear

The performance failure and reliability of motion mechanism has a significant effect on industry reliability, operation safety and production economy. Motion precise is one of the typical performance indicators especially for motion mechanism with multibody and joints. Size of joint clearance degenerates with usage such as wear and deformation. Repeated start-stop lead to impact stress and plastic deformation for clearance joint particularly for mechanism with high load and long working cycles. This study attempts to investigate the wear process and performance failure model of multibody mechanism with clearance joints considering plastic deformation and wear. Quantification of plastic deformation caused by repeated impact stress of joints is studied by formulation. Then, a novel wear process model is established, after which performance failure indicator is conducted. A linkage motion mechanism with multi revolution joints is studied to demonstrate proposed methods. This study provides valuable guidelines for degeneration prediction and reliability analysis of motion mechanism.

Pulsatile Deformations of a Conformable Descending Thoracic Aortic Endograft in Aneurysm, Dissection, and Blunt Traumatic Aortic Injury Patients.

This study presents analytic techniques to quantify cardiac pulsatility-induced deformations of thoracic aortic endografts in patients with thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA), dissection (TAD), and blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI) after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). We analyzed 19 image data sets from 14 patients treated for TAA, TAD, and BTAI with cardiac-gated post-TEVAR CTs. Systolic and diastolic geometric models were constructed and diametric, axial, and bending deformations were quantified. For patients with cardiac-gated pre-op scans, the damping of pulsatile diametric distension was computed. Maximum localized diametric distension was 2.4±1.0%, 4.2±1.7%, and 5.5±1.6%, and axial deformation was 0.0±0.1%, -0.1±0.3%, and 1.1±0.6% in the endografts of TAA, TAD, and BTAI cohorts, respectively. Diametric distension damping from pre- to post-TEVAR was ~50%. Diametric and bending deformations were localized at certain axial positions on the endograft, and the inner curve bends more than the centerline, especially adjacent to overlapping regions. The presented techniques support investigation of multi-axial endograft deformations between disease causes and geometric locations on the device. Discretized quantification of deformation is needed to define device fatigue testing conditions and predict device durability in patients. This study demonstrates analytic techniques to quantify discretized deformation of thoracic endografts. Cardiac-resolved computed tomography is sometimes acquired for surgical planning and follow-up, however, the dynamic data are not typically used to quantify pulsatile deformations. Our analytic techniques extract the centerline and surface geometry of the stented thoracic aorta during the cardiac cycle, which are used to quantify diametric, axial, and bending deformations to provide better understanding of device durability and impact on the native anatomy.

Prefabricated acoustic emission array system for landslide monitoring

The quality of landslide monitoring data is crucial to the reliability of early warning systems. One effective approach to improving data quality is through innovation in monitoring techniques. In the case of existing acoustic emission (AE) monitoring methods, the achievable deformation quantification accuracy is limited by the variability of internal and external factors that affect the generated AE signal. To overcome these limitations and further improve monitoring effectiveness, this study developed a novel monitoring equipment consisting of an AE array, which facilitates the standardisation of equipment manufacturing and improves the consistency of data interpretation, thus providing a system that is simple and practical for field application. The developed AE monitoring system includes modules for on-site monitoring, data transmission, information management, and early warning analysis. The AE monitoring system was installed on different soil landslides in China and is continuously operating. Because the AE array provides a standardised and simple tool for landslide subsurface deformation monitoring, it is well-suited for low-income mountainous areas with a high risk of landslides.

Faster Indentation Influences Skin Deformation To Reduce Tactile Discriminability of Compliant Objects.

To discriminate the compliance of soft objects, we rely upon spatiotemporal cues in the mechanical deformation of the skin. However, we have few direct observations of skin deformation over time, in particular how its response differs with indentation velocities and depths, and thereby helps inform our perceptual judgments. To help fill this gap, we develop a 3D stereo imaging method to observe contact of the skin's surface with transparent, compliant stimuli. Experiments with human-subjects, in passive touch, are conducted with stimuli varying in compliance, indentation depth, velocity, and time duration. The results indicate that contact durations greater than 0.4 s are perceptually discriminable. Moreover, compliant pairs delivered at higher velocities are more difficult to discriminate because they induce smaller differences in deformation. In a detailed quantification of the skin's surface deformation, we find that several, independent cues aid perception. In particular, the rate of change of gross contact area best correlates with discriminability, across indentation velocities and compliances. However, cues associated with skin surface curvature and bulk force are also predictive, for stimuli more and less compliant than skin, respectively. These findings and detailed measurements seek to inform the design of haptic interfaces.

Mapping the shape and dimension of three-dimensional Lagrangian coherent structures and invariant manifolds

We introduce maps of Cauchy–Green strain tensor eigenvalues to barycentric coordinates to quantify and visualize the full geometry of three-dimensional deformation in stationary and non-stationary fluid flows. As a natural extension of Lagrangian coherent structure diagnostics, which provide separate scalar fields and a one-dimensional quantification of fluid deformation, our barycentric mapping visualizes the role of all three Cauchy–Green eigenvalues (or rates of stretching) in a single plot through a novel stretching coordinate system. The coordinate system is based on the distance from three distinct limiting states of deformation that correspond with the dimension of the underlying invariant manifolds. One-dimensional axisymmetric deformation (sphere to rod deformation) corresponds to one-dimensional unstable manifolds, two-dimensional axisymmetric deformation (sphere to disk deformation) corresponds to two-dimensional unstable manifolds and the rare three-dimensional isometric case (sphere to sphere translation and rotation) corresponds to shear-free elliptic Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs). We provide methods to visualize the degree to which fluid deformation approximates these limiting states, and tools to quantify differences between flows based on the compositional geometry of invariant manifolds in the flow. We also develop a simple analogue for bilinearly representing and plotting both rates of stretching and rotation as a single vector. As with other LCS techniques, these diagnostics define frame-indifferent material features in the flow. We provide multiple computed examples of LCS and momentum transport barriers, and show advantages over other coherent structure diagnostics.

Highly accelerated free-breathing real-time myocardial tagging for exercise cardiovascular magnetic resonance

BackgroundExercise cardiovascular magnetic resonance (Ex-CMR) myocardial tagging would enable quantification of myocardial deformation after exercise. However, current electrocardiogram (ECG)-segmented sequences are limited for Ex-CMR. MethodsWe developed a highly accelerated balanced steady-state free-precession real-time tagging technique for 3 T. A 12-fold acceleration was achieved using incoherent sixfold random Cartesian sampling, twofold truncated outer phase encoding, and a deep learning resolution enhancement model. The technique was tested in two prospective studies. In a rest study of 27 patients referred for clinical CMR and 19 healthy subjects, a set of ECG-segmented for comparison and two sets of real-time tagging images for repeatability assessment were collected in 2-chamber and short-axis views with spatiotemporal resolution 2.0 × 2.0 mm2 and 29 ms. In an Ex-CMR study of 26 patients with known or suspected cardiac disease and 23 healthy subjects, real-time images were collected before and after exercise. Deformation was quantified using measures of short-axis global circumferential strain (GCS). Two experienced CMR readers evaluated the image quality of all real-time data pooled from both studies using a 4-point Likert scale for tagline quality (1-excellent; 2-good; 3-moderate; 4-poor) and artifact level (1-none; 2-minimal; 3-moderate; 4-significant). Statistical evaluation included Pearson correlation coefficient (r), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and coefficient of variation (CoV). ResultsIn the rest study, deformation was successfully quantified in 90% of cases. There was a good correlation (r = 0.71) between ECG-segmented and real-time measures of GCS, and repeatability was good to excellent (ICC = 0.86 [0.71, 0.94]) with a CoV of 4.7%. In the Ex-CMR study, deformation was successfully quantified in 96% of subjects pre-exercise and 84% of subjects post-exercise. Short-axis and 2-chamber tagline quality were 1.6 ± 0.7 and 1.9 ± 0.8 at rest and 1.9 ± 0.7 and 2.5 ± 0.8 after exercise, respectively. Short-axis and 2-chamber artifact level was 1.2 ± 0.5 and 1.4 ± 0.7 at rest and 1.3 ± 0.6 and 1.5 ± 0.8 post-exercise, respectively. ConclusionWe developed a highly accelerated real-time tagging technique and demonstrated its potential for Ex-CMR quantification of myocardial deformation. Further studies are needed to assess the clinical utility of our technique.

Automated segmentation of long and short axis DENSE cardiovascular magnetic resonance for myocardial strain analysis using spatio-temporal convolutional neural networks

BackgroundCine Displacement Encoding with Stimulated Echoes (DENSE) facilitates the quantification of myocardial deformation, by encoding tissue displacements in the cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) image phase, from which myocardial strain can be estimated with high accuracy and reproducibility. Current methods for analyzing DENSE images still heavily rely on user input, making this process time-consuming and subject to inter-observer variability. The present study sought to develop a spatio-temporal deep learning model for segmentation of the left-ventricular (LV) myocardium, as spatial networks often fail due to contrast-related properties of DENSE images. Methods2D + time nnU-Net-based models have been trained to segment the LV myocardium from DENSE magnitude data in short- and long-axis images. A dataset of 360 short-axis and 124 long-axis slices was used to train the networks, from a combination of healthy subjects and patients with various conditions (hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, myocarditis). Segmentation performance was evaluated using ground-truth manual labels, and a strain analysis using conventional methods was performed to assess strain agreement with manual segmentation. Additional validation was performed using an externally acquired dataset to compare the inter- and intra-scanner reproducibility with respect to conventional methods. ResultsSpatio-temporal models gave consistent segmentation performance throughout the cine sequence, while 2D architectures often failed to segment end-diastolic frames due to the limited blood-to-myocardium contrast. Our models achieved a DICE score of 0.83 ± 0.05 and a Hausdorff distance of 4.0 ± 1.1 mm for short-axis segmentation, and 0.82 ± 0.03 and 7.9 ± 3.9 mm respectively for long-axis segmentations. Strain measurements obtained from automatically estimated myocardial contours showed good to excellent agreement with manual pipelines, and remained within the limits of inter-user variability estimated in previous studies. ConclusionSpatio-temporal deep learning shows increased robustness for the segmentation of cine DENSE images. It provides excellent agreement with manual segmentation for strain extraction. Deep learning will facilitate the analysis of DENSE data, bringing it one step closer to clinical routine.

Witness to strain: Subdomain boundary length and the apparent subdomain boundary density in large strained olivine grains

Abstract Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) investigation of strain mainly uses polycrystalline samples to study fabric development. We extend the use of EBSD for the analysis of large single mineral grains by measuring the apparent surficial subdomain boundary density per unit area, reported here as unit segment length (USL). We apply this USL technique to examine and quantify the plastic deformation recorded by naturally shocked olivine in the low to moderately shocked ureilite meteorite Northwest Africa 2221 and the highly shocked martian dunitic cumulate meteorite Northwest Africa 2737, by assessing the types of subdomain boundaries and the increase of subdomain misorientation with increasing shock metamorphism. We further compare USL results for the shocked olivine in the meteorites with those for the terrestrial deformation of Hawaiian olivine. USL of olivine increases with shock level, and USL from shocked olivine is significantly greater than that of terrestrially deformed olivine. USL is a promising tool for the quantification of plastic deformation in large single crystals from shock as well as terrestrial deformation. The results derived from USL measurements along with local EBSD maps are complementary with quantitative 2D X-ray diffraction analysis of crystal deformation and disruption, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of characteristic shock deformation recorded by large single crystals.

Quantification and modelling of post-seismic deformation following the 2013 September 24 Mw 7.7 earthquake in the Makran region, Pakistan

SUMMARY On 2013 September 24, an earthquake of magnitude Mw 7.7 occurred on the Hoshab Fault in southern Pakistan, south of the 650-km-long Chaman Fault, within the eastern Makran accretionary wedge. This earthquake was caused predominantly by strike-slip faulting. To quantify the post-seismic deformation following this large earthquake, we used ascending and descending Sentinel-1 data over the period 2014 November–2017 December. The deformation time-series over these 3 years shows that the post-seismic deformation was not linear over the time. To determine the mechanisms that may have driven post-seismic deformation, such as after-slip or a combination of after-slip and viscous relaxation, we explored some models, including after-slip only, and a combination of after-slip and viscous relaxation, to identify the best fit between the observed and simulated deformation time-series. Our results indicate that after-slip was the main mechanism controlling the post-seismic deformation. The introduction of a basal flat fault in the modelling improves the fit between the model results and the time-series obtained from the satellite images This basal fault is located at a depth of 18 km, has a northward dip of 7° and corresponds to the basal décollement level of the Makran accretionary prism.

Highly Sensitive Silver‐Microlayer Thin Film on a pp‐PFM‐Modified PDMS Strain Sensor as a Versatile Tool for Stretchable Electronics Applications

AbstractStrain sensors for wearable electronic devices have received attention due to their potential application in medicine for physiological monitoring or as part of advanced prosthetics. However, low sensitivity values as well as complex fabrication procedures remain significant challenges limiting the applicability. This work presents the fabrication of a strain sensor based on the separation of silver microplates immobilized on a stretchable substrate. The deposition of the microplates is achieved through the exposition of a glucosamine‐functionalized surface to the Tollens’ reagent, being a versatile fabrication methodology able to be implemented in a wide range of substrates. The obtained sensors present a high stretchability (&gt;100%), high conductivity (105 S m–1), good linearity (R2 &gt; 0.98 under 30% strain), good hysteresis properties, and high sensitivity (up to GF = 900 000). Hence, the sensors allow the measurement of very small deformations even in dynamic range, where it presents a stable linear response for the quantification of cyclic deformations of 0.02% strain. Moreover, the applicability of these sensors has been studied in motion‐sensing devices and in a pressure sensor revealing that this technology may expand the potential applications of wearable electronic devices.

A deep learning approach for automatic echocardiographic right ventricular strain measurements using a limited dataset

Abstract Background Speckle tracking echocardiography provides quantification of myocardial deformation and is useful in the assessment of myocardial function. Right ventricular (RV) strain has been suggested as a sensitive tool for diagnosing cardiomyopathies and assessing long term patient outcomes for patients with pulmonary hypertension, severe tricuspid regurgitation and COVID-19 infection. Recent advances in deep learning (DL) have made promising advances in automating the labour-intensive delineation of regions of interest (ROIs). However, compared to echocardiograms with left ventricular (LV) strain, RV strain data is scarce, making DL models difficult to train. Purpose To investigate whether annotated LV strain data could be beneficial in training a DL model for automatic RV strain when using a limited RV dataset. Methods The dataset consisted of anonymized still frames from 141 echocardiograms of the RV in the RV-focused 4 chamber view with corresponding cardiologist-defined ROI. Exams included healthy subjects and patients with heart failure, valvular disease, and conduction abnormalities. ROIs and still images were extracted at the mid-systole, and then quality assessed by an experienced cardiologist as high, medium, or low. The dataset was randomly split into 68%/17%/15% sets for training, validation, and testing. A convolutional neural network for image segmentation (U-Net) with a residual neural network (ResNet50) encoder was used, with a combination of binary cross entropy and Dice loss functions. Augmentation, predefined ImageNet weights and pre-training were also employed. For pre-training, 715 still images in the apical 4 chamber view with LV defined ROIs were used, both in their original and horizontally flipped view. Predicted ROIs were reintroduced into commercially available echocardiogram analysis software to automatically calculate longitudinal strain (LS) values. Results The model pre-trained with the flipped LV images achieved the highest performance with a mean absolute difference of 1.26 percentage points (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.62–1.89 percentage points) between manually measured and DL-assisted LS. Median absolute LS difference was 0.85 (95% CI: 0.28–1.57) percentage points. A Bland-Altman plot revealed two outliers and no obvious trends. In comparison, the mean and median absolute LS differences for the model without pre-training were 1.87 (95% CI: 0.73–3.00) and 1.09 (95% CI: 0.56–1.63) percentage points, respectively. Conclusions The current study demonstrates that DL-assisted, automated RV strain measurement is feasible even with a small dataset, and that performance can be increased by using images annotated for LV strain. While the majority of the predicted RV strain results were within the typical range of intra- and interobserver variability, a few outliers were observed. The quantitative relationship between non-linear stress-strain behaviour and dislocation structure in martensitic stainless steel

The reversible behaviour of metals at low applied stresses is more complex than the generally assumed linear behaviour. This is primarily because of the reversible nature of dislocation motion leading to a strain contribution known as anelasticity. This work aims to investigate (a) quantification of dislocation structures in industrial grade stainless steels, (b) unloading behaviour, and (c) the fundamentals of reversible and mechanical behaviour occurring below the yield stress. Mechanical testing of martensitic stainless steel (Stavax ESR) was performed in two different modes: incremental plastic deformation and cyclic loading-unloading below the yield stress with a focus on the measurement of small strains and corresponding stresses, occurring in the pre-yield regime. The non-linear reversible behaviour was quantitatively analysed, as opposed to the common approximation of an empirical determination of apparent Young's modulus. The recently proposed pre-yield model has been refined and, for the first time, successfully applied to a complex microstructure such as stainless steel. The quantification of dislocation structure parameters is shown to be an efficient alternative to the conventional experimental methods of quantifying dislocation structure. Further, a unique representation and quantification of the unloading and hysteresis behaviour provides more insight into the material behaviour. Lastly, the little studied microplasticity occurring below the yield stress upon cyclic loading-unloading was determined. Importantly, the physical basis of the model will allow quantification of plastic deformations in the pre-yield region, large enough to be significant in industrial processes.
