Application Status of Engineering Management in the Construction Field

With the development of the real estate industry, the take-off of the construction industry has also caused more and more capital to pour into the construction industry, driving the rapid development of the construction industry, but also causing the construction industry to face great competitive pressure. In order to achieve effective management of construction projects, this article aims to point out the main problems in Chinas construction management and improve the construction project management system and improve construction technology, which is conducive to improving the operational level and construction quality of construction projects. Currently, there is a lack of effective information communication and coordination mechanisms within the construction units of construction projects, which can lead to slow progress and low efficiency in the construction of construction projects, which will greatly increase the implementation difficulty of construction projects and restrict the improvement of enterprise construction project management level. Thus, it is important to improve the role of construction project management in the construction industry, and it is necessary to figure out the inner problems and strengthen the management of construction projects. The articles main purpose is to focus on the current situation and development reality of construction project management, specific research is conducted on its management and control optimization from the perspective of engineering management, to provide a reference for modern management and optimization of construction projects management.

Optimization time-cost-quality-work continuity in construction management using mutation–crossover slime mold algorithm

This study presents the mutation–crossover slime mold algorithm (MCSMA) to balance the time, cost, quality, and work continuity in a particular construction project. The slime mold algorithm is combined with the mutation–crossover method to modify the operating mechanism and increase the ability of finding optimal solutions in the exploration and exploitation space during the optimization process. The optimal exchange problem considers all the logical aspects of occurring activities and the obvious reasoning applied to choose a compromise solution in the project implementation. The MCSMA is compared with five well-known algorithms (i.e., OMOSOS, MOABC, MODE, MOPSO, and NSGA-II) to verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed model. According to the analysis results, the MCSMA generates a diversification measure for both case studies with 0.501 and 0.485 C-Metric, 0.785 and 0.923 Spread, and 0.843 and 0.806 Hyper-volume. The algorithmic model represents development, improvement, and diversification in the problem of achieving model convergence and wide distribution and gives a better uniformity of optimal solutions compared to the other algorithms.

Transfer Learning-Based Object Detection Model for Steel Structure Bolt Fastening Inspection

As improper inspection of construction works can cause an increase in project costs and a decrease in project quality, construction inspection is considered a critical factor for project success. While traditional inspection tasks are still mainly labor-intensive and time-consuming, computer vision has the potential to revolutionize the construction inspection process by providing more efficient and effective ways to monitor the progress and quality of construction projects. However, previous studies have also indicated that the performance of vision-based site monitoring heavily relies on the volume of training data. To address the issues of challenging data collection at construction sites, this study developed models using transfer learning-based object detection models incorporating data augmentation and transfer learning. The performance of three object detection algorithms was compared based on average precision and inference time for detecting T/S bolt fastening of steel structure. Despite the limited training data available, the model’s performance was improved through data augmentation and transfer learning. The proposed inspection model can increase the efficiency of quality control works for building construction projects and the safety of inspectors.

Research on the application of BIM technology in the whole process cost management of construction projects

This paper conducts an in-depth study on the application of BIM technology in the whole process cost management of construction projects. Firstly, the concept and characteristics of BIM technology and the application of BIM technology in construction engineering are introduced. Then the application of BIM technology in the whole process cost management of construction projects is analyzed from three stages: design, construction and operation. The research results show that the application of BIM technology in the whole process cost management of construction projects has greater advantages, which can improve project efficiency, reduce costs and improve the quality of construction projects.

Investigating the relationship between human resource development and quality in building projects

PurposeThis study aims to show that human resource development (HRD) criteria have a significant role on the quality of building projects.Design/methodology/approachIt is worth mentioning that the present research is a survey in terms of practical purpose and in terms of data collection. In this regard, first, review of the related literature and then the HRD criteria were identified and initial questionnaire was developed after interviews with connoisseurs and approved them. The questionnaire consists of three main criteria and 21 subcriteria that have been distributed among 50 experts. The statistical population of the research includes project managers of grade 1 building companies. Data were processed by SPSS software tests.FindingsFindings showed that all three main criteria of HRD, including training, motivation and participation have a direct and positive effect on the quality index, but the effectiveness of the training criterion is more than motivation and participation. In other words, the desired quality cannot be achieved only by training employees, and with it, a sense of motivation and participation of employees must be aroused.Originality/valueMost researchers believe that achieving good quality in construction projects depends on the performance of human resources, so the development of human resources in the construction industry is very important.

Construction of Construction Engineering Quality Supervision and Management System Based on BIM

The quality supervision and management of construction projects is an important content in the management of construction projects. The construction quality of construction projects is related to the reputation and image of construction enterprises and the vital interests of residents. If we neglect the quality supervision and management of construction projects, it will increase the quality risk of construction projects and cause very serious consequences. The application of cloud technology can improve the data integration problem. The perfect construction management system of architectural engineering consists of four aspects: ideological guarantee system, organizational guarantee system, work guarantee system, institutional guarantee system and economic guarantee system. During the construction process, BIM related technologies are used to control the quality.

AN INVESTIGATION OF THE IMPACT OF QUALITY AND COST MANAGEMENT ON PROJECT PERFORMANCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

The importance of quality and cost management in construction projects cannot be overstated as it significantly influences project outcomes. This research is aimed to examine the degree of quality and cost management implementation, assess its impact on construction project performance, and evaluate the factors that affect its implementation in Nigeria's construction industry. Quantitative research methods were employed, using a questionnaire with 68 variables and 15 constructs, utilizing a five-point Likert scale. Data was collected from 260 respondents, and 242 valid responses were used for analysis, employing Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and LISREL. Reliability and validity tests, including Crombach's alpha, composite reliability, and average variance extracted, were conducted for all constructs, establishing their suitability for further analysis. The exploratory factor analysis in SPSS revealed inadequate implementation of quality and cost management. This finding aligned with the confirmatory factor analysis results, which indicated a significant impact of the factors influencing quality and cost management implementation. The structural equation model (SEM) analysis, used to assess the impact of quality and cost management on construction project performance, demonstrated a high level of impact, with the strongest correlation observed between project cost monitoring and control and construction phase performance. Therefore, urgent measures are needed from industry stakeholders to address the factors hindering the effective implementation of quality and cost management, aiming to enhance project performance.

Safety and Quality Control Management Strategy for Urban Railway Engineering Construction

The safety management of urban railway engineering construction involves many different aspects and a wide scope, playing an important role in guaranteeing the safety of construction projects. Management agencies have more stringent requirements on the quality of railway construction. The overall quality of a construction project should meet the construction requirements before the project can be carried out. In this article, the problems in the actual work of the entire life cycle of safety management are explained, and the lessons and experience pertaining to the safety and quality of urban railway construction projects are discussed. Discussion on Material Testing of Municipal Traffic Engineering

At present, the rapid development of municipal traffic engineering is in line with the high quality development trend and the demand for accurate management. The municipal traffic builders strictly control the quality from the aspects of planning and design, construction management, material testing, measurement and acceptance, among which material testing is an important part. The quality of engineering construction materials directly determines the final quality of engineering construction, so the layout and planning of material control must be done well in the actual implementation process. A preliminary investigation was conducted from the aspects of material classification and detection, material parameter selection, material grading and control, etc., so as to realize the centralized management of the three responsible parties of design, construction and suppliers, further standardize the program and standardization of municipal traffic construction projects, and achieve the goal of excellent construction project quality.

Key factors for implementation of total quality management in construction Sector: A system dynamics approach

Maintaining quality in construction projects is paramount to project success, achieved through techniques such as Total Quality Management (TQM). However, the key factors of TQM implementation in the construction industry of developing countries are not well explored. Accordingly, this paper evaluated the causative relationship and intricacies of TQM implementation in the construction sector of developing countries. A total of 28 key factors of TQM were captured through a literature review. Thereafter, 12 significant key factors were shortlisted. Lack of top management commitment, poor customer/client satisfaction, inadequate quality of education regarding TQM, and ineffective organizational quality culture emerged as impediments to implementing TQM in the construction sector. A Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) was developed to represent interrelations between the 12 shortlisted factors. In addition, a system dynamics model (SDM) was developed. The simulation results of the developed SDM indicated an increase in TQM implementation over the period under the defined system.

Relationship among Safety, Quality and Productivity in Construction Projects

Construction is thought to be the most dangerous business due to its unique nature. To reduce risks and boost productivity in the construction industry, quality and safety management is required. The research examines productivity, quality, and safety in terms of their participation in and effects on the execution of building projects. Safety is given first priority throughout construction, with a focus on hazard detection and the prevention of workplace injuries and accidents. There is an examination and provision of the legislation requiring safety programs, training, and obligation to safety standards. Underlined the significance of safety issues at the design stage. The research also discusses safety of building and the importance of building codes in preventing structural failure, as well as factors that influence building failure and techniques for preventing them. The paper introduces quality through the lens of recent total quality management. Quality control, quality management, quality assurance, and Six Sigma concepts are addressed with examples in relation to building quality and structural integrity. Finally, concepts of productivity are provided, with an emphasis that good project management reduce productivity losses and the use of lean construction and lean Six Sigma methods to complement them. Finally, the report summarizes the relationship among safety, quality, and productivity.

This paper focuses on the problem of automatic defect detection in building materials and the use of deep learning and pattern recognition to solve this problem. The paper describes various methods that can be used to solve this problem, including transfer learning, data augmentation, and fine-tuning, and discusses the advantages and limitations of each approach. The article also describes a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that can be used to detect defects in building materials, specifying the purpose and functionality of each layer. In addition, the article presents the mathematical formulas necessary for this approach, including the convolution operation, the ReLU activation function, the maximum association operation, the dropout operation, and the sigmoid activation function. Overall, the paper highlights the potential of deep learning and pattern recognition in building materials quality control and the benefits that automated systems can bring to the construction industry. The use of these technologies can increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the quality of construction projects, ultimately leading to safer and more durable structures.

Computer Network Technology for the Construction of Engineering Safety Supervision and Management Systems

Background: Nowadays, the function of information construction in construction project quality supervision and management is increasingly prominent, and it has become a task that cannot be ignored by administrative departments. Objective: To supervise and manage engineering safety data effectively and display the system construction more intuitively, a method based on computer network technology is proposed. Methods: K-means clustering, random forest, neural network, and other artificial intelligence algorithms were used for data modelling, and classification model evaluation, regression model evaluation, and other evaluation tools were used to evaluate the quality of the built model, and the power engineering monitoring system was established. The functions of engineering safety supervision and management, data storage and query, deformation graphical display, data analysis and forecast, results report output, and so on are realized. Results: The results showed that the mean square error of K-means was 7.74, the mean square error of random forest was 27.5, and the error of neural network was 4.4. Conclusion: Neural network has the smallest error and the closest data. The establishment of the system provides a new research platform for power engineering safety supervision and management.

Preparation and properties of a novel waterborne epoxy resin modified emulsified asphalt

Waterborne epoxy resin is one alternative to enhance bond strength and storage stability for waterproof adhesive layer. Grafting copolymerization is selected in this paper as one experimental case to investigate its properties and also a feasible innovative preparation. The impact of the preparation process on the grafting rate of acrylic monomer was also considered. Moreover, the effect of the amount of acrylic monomer on the centrifugation stability and particle size of the emulsions was studied, where the infrared spectra were used to verify that hydrophilic groups incorporated into the main body of the aqueous epoxy resin. Main tests for modified emulsified asphalt are designed as it pulls out strength and storage stability under various temperature. The results showed that the highest grafting rate of acrylic monomer was achieved at the grafting temperature of 110℃ and grafting time of 2 h. The centrifugal stability of the emulsion was optimum when the amount of acrylic monomer reached 30%, at this time, the median particle size of the emulsion was 160 nm; the infrared spectrum showed that the epoxy resin main chain successfully introduced hydrophilic group (–COOH) at 1720 cm−1. When the amount of water-borne epoxy resin exceeded 40%, the pull-out strength of waterborne epoxy resin modified emulsified asphalt increased significantly at 25℃ and 40℃, and its storage stability was optimized when the content of waterborne epoxy resin reached 50%. The waterproof adhesive layer material prepared in this study has potential application value for improving the quality of bridge deck pavement and construction projects.

Application of information technology in BIM monitoring of construction quality of large construction projects

At present, there are many problems in BIM monitoring of construction quality of large-scale construction projects. For example, it is easy to be affected by temperature and construction materials, which leads to errors in monitoring data, and then leads to unstable construction quality. In order to optimize the construction quality and efficiency of large-scale construction projects, a BIM (Building Information Modeling) monitoring model of construction quality of large-scale construction projects based on information technology is constructed. This model can solve the problem of low data quality in traditional BIM monitoring, thus ensuring the accuracy of monitoring results and ultimately improving the construction quality and efficiency of the project. The implementation steps of the model are as follows: After the user logs in the application program of the model on the computer side, the system function layer of the model selects the quality management function program. The data model layer combines the program selected by the user, extracts the model through the BIM monitoring data of construction quality based on the main crawler technology in the basic support layer, retrieves the construction quality monitoring data, and judges the fidelity of the data through the information synergy evaluation method of the construction quality chain model based on information technology. The qualified monitoring data are buffered and sent to the system function layer. The function layer evaluates the construction quality in combination with the monitored construction data and feeds it back to the user to realize BIM monitoring of construction quality. The test shows that after the model is applied, the qualified rate of construction quality of large-scale construction projects increases by 0.05%, and the total construction period is reduced by 5 days. The above results show that the construction quality BIM monitoring model of large-scale construction projects based on information technology can effectively improve the construction quality of large-scale construction projects, shorten the construction period, improve the construction efficiency, and play a positive role in the development of China’s construction industry.

Approach for Estimating Inspection Staffing Needs for Highway Construction Projects

Construction inspectors are the primary workforce in the highway construction industry who ensure that the work on infrastructure projects meets or exceeds the quality standards set. However, there is a growing concern in state departments of transportation (DOTs) about the inspection process because of the declining availability of experienced inspectors. This study proposes an approach for estimating inspection staffing needs for highway construction projects. Data from 157 construction projects completed between 2017 and 2021 were used to evaluate project inspection staff size based on the project type, cost, and duration. A total of 35 core inspection items were identified by carrying out a content analysis of construction inspection documents. Then, a focus group of 18 experts from the Kansas DOT was conducted to verify the list of 35 cost inspection items and evaluate the number and experience of inspectors required for each item. The four project types included in the analysis are as follows: grading/surfacing; sealing; surface recycling and overlay; and bridge repair. The analysis showed that the inspection staffing needs depend on project type, duration, and size. The grading/surfacing and bridge repair projects require more inspection staff than the sealing, and surface recycling and overlay projects. The result of a Spearman’s correlation analysis indicated that there is a significant association between the risk level of an inspection item and the number and experience of inspectors required for that item. The findings from this study may help state DOTs identify their needs for inspection staff and improve the quality of highway construction projects.

Factors Influencing The Quality of Construction Projects in Public Universities

The study aims to determine factors affecting project quality in public universities in eastern Ethiopia. The researchers used primary data in a quantitative research approach to accomplish the objectives. The dependent variable, project quality, is regressed on five Explanatory variables: Leadership, Policy & Strategy, People, Partnership & Resources, and Process. Each of these characteristics was gathered from the consultant, client, and contractor. In order to determine the validity of the model. All multiple regression assumption tests were found to be valid. According to regression analysis, it was found that Leadership, Policy & Strategy, People, Partnership & Resources, and Process all have a substantial impact on project quality. The analysis from one-way ANOVA revealed that clients, contractors, and consultants have similar perceptions of the five quality attributes, leadership, people and policy and strategy, partnership and resources and process. Results from this research can be used by construction firms to improve their quality management systems, as they will indicate where the emphasis should be focused to ensure the ongoing improvement of project quality and sustainability.

Application of slime mold algorithm to optimize time, cost and quality in construction projects

Numerous optimization techniques have been proposed for use in order to address issues with various building project components. It has become easier to solve difficult optimization issues in practice due to the development of numerous innovative algorithms in recent years. The utilization of the Slime Mold Algorithm model to optimize time, cost, and quality trade-off problems (TCQT) in this article. The effectiveness of the SMA model was analyzed, evaluated, and compared with the outcomes produced by the opposition-based multi-objective differential evolution (OMODE), nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), multiobjective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MODE). The aforementioned results demonstrated the model’s potential as a strategy by substituting the three - factor approach and processing-time optimal. The management of project time, cost and quality is decisive for investment management activities.

Quantifying the cost of quality in construction projects: an insight into the base of the iceberg

Construction projects are complex endeavors where achieving higher quality standards is challenging due to the intrinsic difficulties and dynamic quality management processes. Several quality management techniques exist to overcome quality concerns, such as the cost of quality (COQ). However, implementing COQ in building construction is challenging due to the absence of a comprehensive quality cost-capturing system. Several studies have tried to quantify different quality costs but are mainly focused on visible failure cost—the tip of the iceberg while the base of the iceberg has rarely been explored. This study develops and quantifies each component of the visible and hidden quality costs—the base of the iceberg. Accordingly, a modified prevention, appraisal, and failure model is developed and applied to the primary data of 25 building projects. The findings highlight the unfamiliarity and passive attitude of the involved construction firms towards quality, thus, incurring higher failure costs amounting to over 12% of the total project cost. Most of this cost remains hidden as traditional accounting systems cannot capture it. Such costs must be eliminated by implementing COQ systems as utilized in the current study. Further, a quality costing framework is established for building projects and applied to the local construction industry to reduce construction failures and improve the quality performance of building projects.
