Prosthetic Soft Tissue Management in Esthetic Implant Restorations, Part I: Presurgical Planning, Implant Placement, and Restoration Timing. A Narrative Review.

This two-part review article delineates various techniques to enhance esthetic outcomes in anterior implant treatments. Part I concentrates on presurgical measures, case selection, implant placement, and restoration timing. Part II discusses post-surgical steps, the temporary restoration phase, the emergence profile contour, abutment types, and impression techniques. A comprehensive search was conducted using Medline/PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. The primary keywords included were "Dental Implants," "Dental Prosthesis, Implant-Supported," "Esthetics, Dental," "Dental Impression Techniques," and "Tissue Management." Initially, 1472 studies were identified, from which 187 were selected based on publication year and title relevance. After removing duplicates, 84 abstracts were reviewed in full text, culminating in 59 studies being thoroughly analyzed. Optimal esthetics in implant restorations are attainable through meticulous treatment planning, precise surgical execution, and systematic restorative steps, ensuring predictable outcomes. Factors such as a thick gingival biotype, an intact facial bone wall, and atraumatic extraction significantly contribute to superior esthetic results. Immediate implant placement combined with immediate provisionalization provides the most predictable outcomes by supporting and maintaining soft tissue architecture. Conversely, delayed implant placement and provisionalization often require extensive manipulation of collapsed soft tissues to achieve desired esthetics.

Machine Learning on 50,000 Manuscripts Shows Increased Clinical Research by Academic Cardiac Surgeons

IntroductionAcademic cardiac surgeons are productive researchers and innovators. We sought to perform a comprehensive machine learning (ML)-based characterization of cardiac surgery research over the past 40 y to identify trends in research pursuits. MethodsUS-based academic websites were queried for surgeon profiles. Publications since 1980 were obtained from Web of Science, and publication classifications (e.g., “human”, “animal”) were collected through the National Institutes of Health iCite tool. Publications were deemed “basic or translational” if >50% of their classification was under “animal” or “molecular or cell”, and “clinical” if otherwise. ML-based clustering was performed on publication titles and Medical Subject Heading terms to identify research topics. ResultsA total of 944 cardiac surgeons accounted for 48,031 unique publications. Average citations per year have decreased since 1980 (P < 0.001). The percentage of basic or translational publications by cardiac surgeons has decreased over time (P < 0.001), comprising of only 8% of publications in 2022. Adult cardiac surgeons, those who received an F32, K08, or R01, and those with a PhD were more likely to publish basic or translational research. Top areas of basic or translational research were myocardial reperfusion, aortic aneurysms or remodeling, and transplant immunology. Major areas of clinical research included aortic disease, aortic valve disease, and mechanical circulatory support. Collaboration analysis revealed that 55% of publications were single-center, and the yearly percentage of these publications has decreased over time (P < 0.001). ConclusionsCardiac surgeons are performing less basic or translational research relative to clinical research than ever before. The majority of publications over the past 40 y did not involve cross-center collaboration. Continued support for clinical research is needed, while also encouraging collaborative basic or translational science to foster innovation in patient care.

Shengji ointment combined with bromelain promotes granulation of exposed tendons in diabetic foot ulcers: A multicenter, randomized, positive-controlled clinical trial

BackgroundExposed, infected and necrotic tendons often occur in the middle and late stages of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). The exposed tendon is both a potential source and route of infection, which prolongs the treatment period and affects recovery, leading to amputation and even death. Therefore, management of the exposed tendon in patients with DFU is the key to treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Shengji ointment combined with bromelain in the treatment of DFU with tendon exposure and to provide clinical treatment options and evidence-based medicine. MethodsThis study was a multicenter, nonblinded, randomized, positive controlled clinical trial involving 180 patients with DFU with tendon exposure at four tertiary-grade A-class hospitals. The included patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to an observation group (n = 90) that received Shengji ointment combined with bromelain and a control group (n = 90) that received hydrocolloid dressing, with dressing changes once daily for 4 weeks. Patients in both groups continued with conventional treatments, such as blood glucose and blood pressure medication, lipid regulation, and antiplatelets. The primary outcome measure was wound coverage with granulation tissue. The secondary outcome measures included the wound healing rate, time to granulation, Maryland foot score, time to debridement of necrotic tendon tissue, and granulation tissue score. We performed measurements before enrollment and after the end of treatment for comparison. ResultsThere was no significant difference in the baseline data between the two groups before treatment (P > 0.05). After treatment, the primary outcome indicators of the two groups were compared, and the wound granulation tissue coverage rate of the treatment group was greater than that of the control group (P = 0.003). For the secondary outcome outcomes, the wound healing rate, time to granulation, Maryland foot function score, time to debridement of necrotic tendon tissue, and granulation tissue score in the treatment group were significantly better than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P = 0.444). ConclusionsShengji ointment combined with bromelain effectively promotes the removal of exposed necrotic tendons in patients with DFU, promotes the regeneration of healthy granulation tissue, accelerates wound healing, and protects the limb and its function. It also appears to be safe as an intervention for the treatment of patients with DFU. Trial registrationThe study protocol was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR) under the code ChiCTR2000039327 on October 23, 2020. Covid-19 Related Seizures

Background: The Coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2, COVID-19) has been evolving its viral strains, prevalence, symptomatology, and sequelae of disease for the past three years. Although the most recognized COVID-19 symptoms involve the respiratory tract; neurological symptoms have been documented. Specifically, seizures have specifically been discussed in the literature but remain both under-recognized and under-reported in clinical practice. Aim: To review of the literature of adult patients with COVID-19 and seizures and integrate into clinical practice in the acute care environment; from presentation to the emergency Department to discharge. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted to identify all reported clinical studies involving adult patients with COVID-19 and de novo seizures from MEDLINE, yielding 108 relevant publication titles and abstracts. Additional three relevant studies were discovered through manual search of reference lists of included studies. After excluding non-related publications, 58 publications underwent full-text review. Reporting of results was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Results: Data was organized into the following themes in the literature: prevalence of seizure occurrence in patients with COVID-19; pathophysiology discussing possible cause; CSF and EEG findings in these patients, and outcomes both in and out of hospital. Conclusion: Seizures were reported as both the presenting symptom of COVID-19 infection and a sequelae of the disease. Heterogeneity identified in both severity and pathogenesis of disease may partly account for the variability in reporting. Seizures may occur as single incidences, with no further implication to the patient or they may occur in the context of New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus. Patients may require critical care for management of Status Epilepticus or encephalopathy with accompanying seizures. Clinician vigilance is essential in identifying COVID-19 infection in patients presenting to Emergency Services with seizures. Early recognition impacts patient care both in-hospital and at post-discharge follow-up.

Four Decades of Research Productivity and Hot Spots in Pancreas Transplantation.

Background: The field of pancreas transplantation has undergone transformative phases, progressing from its promising inception in 1966 to becoming a standard treatment for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes. This bibliometric analysis explores the progression of pancreas transplantation research over a period of four decades, mapping milestones, contributors, and emerging trends. Methods: Our bibliometric analysis utilizes the comprehensive Scopus database, which includes publication titles, author information, affiliations, abstracts, keywords, and journal details. The search strategy was centered on research related to pancreas and pancreas-kidney transplantation. The analysis encompasses the time frame spanning from 1983 to 2023, with the data extraction taking place on October 7th, 2023. Results: The analysis of 4,897 articles uncovered unique trends in the field of pancreas transplantation research. The years 1989, 1996, and 2021 saw significant increases in the number of publications, which corresponded to the responses to clinical challenges and advancements. Contributions by authors from the United States of America were the most numerous, with 1,905 publications and 49,949 citations. The research topics were highlighted by keywords such as "graft survival," "graft rejection," and" Immunosuppressive treatment." Conclusion: The fluctuations in publication trends that have been identified indicate dynamic reactions to changing priorities and challenges. Although it has limitations, this analysis provides valuable insights for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers who are dealing with the complex field of pancreas transplantation literature. Further bibliometric research may advance our knowledge and direct future initiatives in this developing field.

Functional and aesthetic results of the Z-shaped and straight lower lip-splitting incision: a randomized clinical trial

The lip-splitting approach enables excellent access to all areas of the mouth and pharynx to remove tumors; however, traditional lower lip-splitting incisions produce an unsatisfactory scar. To achieve better functional and aesthetic results, we used a Z-shaped incision and compared the functional and aesthetic outcomes of the straight and Z-shaped incisions. Sixty patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into two groups and underwent lip-splitting between March 2021 and September 2023. Eventually, 77 patients were reviewed within 6 months and evaluated using the lip function assessment scale, patient and observer scar assessment scale, naïve observer scar assessment scale, and a clinical examination. The Z-shaped incision group performed better in terms of the lip pout movement at 3 months and in the subjective overall opinion, color, irregularity, and pigmentation at 6 months. The Z-shaped incision group had a lower incidence of notched vermilion. In conclusion, Z-shaped lower lip-splitting incisions have better functional and aesthetic outcomes than traditional straight incisions.Trial registration: Public title: Difference between the effect of Z-shaped and vertical incisions of labiobuccal flap on the recovery of lower lip scars. Data linkage studies of primary care utilisation after release from prison: a scoping review

BackgroundPrimary care plays a central role in most, if not all, health care systems including the care of vulnerable populations such as people who have been incarcerated. Studies linking incarceration records to health care data can improve understanding about health care access following release from prison. This review maps evidence from data-linkage studies about primary care use after prison release.MethodsThe framework by Arksey and O’Malley and guidance by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) were used in this review. This scoping review followed methods published in a study protocol. Searches were performed (January 2012-March 2023) in MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science Core Collection using key-terms relating to two areas: (i) people who have been incarcerated and (ii) primary care. Using eligibility criteria, two authors independently screened publication titles and abstracts (step 1), and subsequently, screened full text publications (step 2). Discrepancies were resolved with a third author. Two authors independently charted data from included publications. Findings were mapped by methodology, key findings and gaps in research.ResultsThe database searches generated 1,050 publications which were screened by title and abstract. Following this, publications were fully screened (n = 63 reviewer 1 and n = 87 reviewer 2), leading to the inclusion of 17 publications. Among the included studies, primary care use after prison release was variable. Early contact with primary care services after prison release (e.g. first month) was positively associated with an increased health service use, but an investigation found that a large proportion of individuals did not access primary care during the first month. The quality of care was found to be largely inadequate (measured continuity of care) for moderate multimorbidity. There were lower levels of colorectal and breast cancer screening among people released from custody. The review identified studies of enhanced primary care programmes for individuals following release from prison, with studies reporting a reduction in reincarceration and criminal justice system costs.ConclusionsThis review has suggested mixed evidence regarding primary care use after prison release and has highlighted challenges and areas of suboptimal care. Further research has been discussed in relation to the scoping review findings.

Trends and evolution of agile branding: a bibliometric analysis

As today’s environment constantly changes, scientific and practical literature suggests that brands must be managed more agilely. Agile branding, characterized by stakeholder involvement, adaptability, and flexibility, emerges as an innovative approach for companies to navigate dynamic markets to ensure that they remain sustainably relevant and competitive. Yet, no bibliometric analysis has been conducted on agility related to branding to date. This paper aims to illustrate and analyze the trends and evolution of agile branding by applying bibliometric methods to the scientific article literature produced between 1996 and 2023. The results of a systematic literature review are presented, and the findings of the bibliometric analysis of 70 publications listed in the Web of Science Core Collection database are evaluated. Furthermore, visualization and interpretation of bibliometric networks related to citations and publications, publication titles, keywords, authorship, and affiliations with the software VOSviewer is included. This bibliometric analysis shows that the number of scientific studies on agility related to branding has increased mainly since 2008, reaching its peak in 2022, indicating a growing research interest. The study reveals that much more research needs to be conducted on how brands can be managed more agilely and dynamically to compete in a fast-moving world.

Cultural and multicultural topics in Neuropsychology Journal titles from 2010-2020

Objective The values of a field are reflected in the science it publishes. The goal of this study was to present a historical analysis of the extent to which the field of clinical neuropsychology publishes journals with titles that address culture in the context of brain function and behavior between 2010 and 2020. Methods Titles from articles published in 13 neuropsychology journals from 2010–2020 were collected and coded with regard to culture and multicultural content. The aims of the study were to (1) determine how often cultural or multicultural topics were represented in journal titles, (2) determine if cultural or multicultural content in neuropsychology journal publication titles increased over time, and (3) to explore other neuropsychological content that was most and least likely to appear in publications pertaining to culture or multicultural issues. Results Results indicated that titles for publications in clinical neuropsychology journals with content relevant to cultural or multicultural neuropsychology represented 1.1% to 13.4% of titles across the 13 journals. The number of cultural/multicultural titles increased over time. The number of cultural/multicultural titles per journal was not significantly correlated with the journal impact factor. Normative data were addressed significantly more often in cultural/multicultural titles versus non-cultural/multicultural titles, whereas psychiatric issues were addressed significantly less often. Conclusions There are many actions that clinical neuropsychologists can take to increase the field’s attention to the effects of culture on brain function and behavior. It is vital to update our data from 2021 to the present, given the substantial increase in awareness of social justice issues that occurred since 2020.

Top 100 most‐cited scientific articles in regenerative endodontics 2019–2023: A bibliometric analysis

AbstractBackgroundBibliometric analysis is a critical indicator of the influence and relevance of scientific papers, whilst also highlighting key contributors and gaps in knowledge in a scientific field.ObjectivesTo update and analyse the 100 most‐cited papers in regenerative endodontics from 2019 to 2023.MethodsA search of the most‐cited recent papers focusing on regenerative endodontics using journals included in the category, ‘Dentistry, Oral Surgery &amp; Medicine’, in the Clarivate Web of Science database from 2019 to 2023 was performed. Three researchers conducted the study selection and data extraction. Data extraction included publication title and year, authors, number and mean number of citations, institution, country and continent, study design, journal title, keywords and research topic. Citation counts were also collected in Google Scholar and Scopus databases. Graphical bibliometric networks were created using VOSviewer software.ResultsThe number of citations of the 100 most‐cited articles ranged from 6 to 85. Most were published in 2020 (n = 48), principally in the Journal of Endodontics (47%), followed by International Endodontic Journal (13%), Journal of Dental Research (6%) and Dental Materials (6%). Laboratory study was the most common study design amongst the included papers (n = 47), followed by narrative reviews (n = 17) and observational studies (n = 16). The most frequent first author on the top three most‐cited papers was Hacer Aksel, whilst Adham A. Azim (n = 6; 89 citations) contributed most to the top 100 articles. The institution from which most articles originated was the University of Hong Kong (China) (n = 5; 81 citations), whereas the corresponding authors were predominantly from the United States of America (USA) (n = 31; 560 citations). The VOSviewer map of co‐authorship demonstrated research collaborative clusters. ‘Regenerative endodontics’ and ‘stem‐cells’ were the most employed keywords (37 and 36 occurrences respectively).DiscussionThe current study was designed not only to showcase the most influential papers in regenerative endodontics since 2019 but also to provide a better understanding of global research in this area over the last five years.ConclusionsThis bibliometric analysis highlighted papers, authors, institutions and keywords in regenerative endodontics. The 100 most‐cited papers primarily consisted of laboratory studies published in the USA, focusing on evaluating biomaterials and scaffold design strategies in contact with stem cells. Clinical studies and systematic reviews representing higher levels of scientific evidence are currently not the most influential in the regenerative endodontic field.

PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP: BIBLIOMETRIC AND VISUALIZED ANALYSIS

&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;There has been a notable surge in scholarly interest in public-private partnerships (PPP), their forms, models and role in the development of social infrastructure. The growing body of research on PPPs makes bibliometric analysis in this area a pertinent task. This study focuses on the literature on PPPs published between 2000 and 2021 and indexed by Scopus, Google Scholar, and Crossref. The study examines the evolution and structure of publication activity and trends in co-authorship as well as reciprocal citation relationships between articles. The top cited publications, authors and journals are identified. We have also conducted a semantic analysis of publication titles and keyword co-occurrence relationships, building a co-occurrence map in VOSviewer software. These research results can be of interest to scholars and practitioners in the field of public-private partnerships.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;

TIN-X version 3: update with expanded dataset and modernized architecture for enhanced illumination of understudied targets.

TIN-X (Target Importance and Novelty eXplorer) is an interactive visualization tool for illuminating associations between diseases and potential drug targets and is publicly available at newdrugtargets.org. TIN-X uses natural language processing to identify disease and protein mentions within PubMed content using previously published tools for named entity recognition (NER) of gene/protein and disease names. Target data is obtained from the Target Central Resource Database (TCRD). Two important metrics, novelty and importance, are computed from this data and when plotted as log(importance) vs. log(novelty), aid the user in visually exploring the novelty of drug targets and their associated importance to diseases. TIN-X Version 3.0 has been significantly improved with an expanded dataset, modernized architecture including a REST API, and an improved user interface (UI). The dataset has been expanded to include not only PubMed publication titles and abstracts, but also full-text articles when available. This results in approximately 9-fold more target/disease associations compared to previous versions of TIN-X. Additionally, the TIN-X database containing this expanded dataset is now hosted in the cloud via Amazon RDS. Recent enhancements to the UI focuses on making it more intuitive for users to find diseases or drug targets of interest while providing a new, sortable table-view mode to accompany the existing plot-view mode. UI improvements also help the user browse the associated PubMed publications to explore and understand the basis of TIN-X's predicted association between a specific disease and a target of interest. While implementing these upgrades, computational resources are balanced between the webserver and the user's web browser to achieve adequate performance while accommodating the expanded dataset. Together, these advances aim to extend the duration that users can benefit from TIN-X while providing both an expanded dataset and new features that researchers can use to better illuminate understudied proteins.

Paweł Sobolewski i jego "Poland" – pierwsze polonijne wydawnictwo periodyczne w USA z 1842 r.

The history of the magazine Poland is outlined against the background of the conditions faced by Polish exiles deported from Austria to the USA in March 1834. After a short period of support from American society, they were left to their own entrepreneurship. Most of them came from the nobility and did not know English, which significantly hindered finding employment. This article focuses on the figures of Paweł Sobolewski and Eustachy Wyszyński – exiles who managed to adapt to the unfamiliar conditions. Their biographies and achievements are brought closer; especially Sobolewski, who gained fame as a poet and the editor and publisher of the first English-language magazine „Poland,” dealing with Polish history and culture. The article details the circumstances of the periodical’s edition and its form and content based on copies preserved in the National Library in Warsaw. The second goal of the article is an attempt to collect Sobolewski’s literary achievements, scattered in American press. As a result of a selective query, over twenty of his works published in contemporary journals were compiled, indicating the titles of publications in which they were included, with the reservation that this list is not complete. A more comprehensive query of contemporary press in the USA may uncover new, previously unknown works of the editor of „Poland” and fill gaps in his biography.

Development of Classification Method for Lecturer Area of Expertise Based on Scientific Publication Using BERT

Implementing the Artificial Intelligence concept in higher education can be utilized in the context of Human Resource (HR) talent management. The lecturer portfolio provided by the Integrated Resource Information System (SISTER DIKTI) is expected to give an overview of the profiles of all lecturers and map competencies based on groups of fields of knowledge. However, the map of scientific fields based on SISTER data currently available is still subjective. The data is in the form of a group of lecturers' chosen fields of science, independently selected by each lecturer to recognize their expertise. This study discusses the problem of processing unstructured SISTER data. It looks for mapping solutions and classification methods by developing a strategy for classifying groups of scientific fields from unstructured data input. It is necessary to identify the suitability of the chosen field of science compared to that developed through the tri-dharma through identification based on a mapping of the group of fields that can be extracted from the tri-dharma activity, in this case, research represented by scientific publications recorded on SISTER. Therefore, we need an appropriate model to measure similarity, which can then be classified based on abstract documents and scientific publication titles for the classification of scientific fields using NLP based on classification run on DGX A100. This study aims to develop a classification method from titles and abstracts. Scientific publications contained in SISTER are unstructured data, so a corpus is formed to identify the lecturer's field of science. The results show that the classification method developed in this study can measure the similarity of lecturer publications based on abstracts and titles through a vector formation process based on bidirectional encoders and also produces a deep learning model to classify 24 categories of fields of science with an accuracy of 95,0345 percent on training data and 92.876 percent on the test data.

Scientific research on exotic and native mollusk farming in Mexico ac-cording to SCOPUS

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate scientific productivity in this field through the database deposited in SCOPUS for Mexico. Design/methodology/approach: The genera and species of mollusks, currently cultivated or with cultivation potential, marine and freshwater, native and exotic, that have been studied are identified. The SCOPUS search was performed using the scientific name of the corresponding species in the publication title. The number of publications, the institutions that generated them, the SCOPUS theme of the study and the research funders were obtained. Results: There is an uneven growth, with a greater focus on abalone and octopus, while the genus Crassostrea, particularly the species C. gigas, leads the production of scientific articles. CIBNOR and IPN are the most relevant institutions in scientific production in molluscan aquaculture in Mexico. Limitations on study/implications: Despite the interest, advances in areas such as physiology, nutrition and reproduction have not been translated into efficient culture technologies in most cases. Findings/conclusions: These findings highlight the need to promote research and technological development in the aquaculture of native mollusks in Mexico, as well as to promote collaboration between academic research institutions and the production sector to overcome the challenges in the culture of these species

This documentary research aims to analyze and discuss the literature published from 2018 to 2022 and commercial applications found in the Android and iOS virtual stores, released from 2013 to 2021, aimed at developing learning programming for basic education students. A qualitative approach, exploratory level, and documentary method were used. The main result is a classification of the selected applications, with the application's name, developer, and purpose. In addition to a table with application development reports, publication titles, country, and year. After analyzing the selected publications and applications, it is concluded that programming learning in basic education is stimulated by interactive tools that solve problems oriented to programming logic.

Fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) is a valuable tool for understanding complex issues due to its ability to express complex and uncertain knowledge domains with dynamic modelling capabilities. This study focuses on the application of FCM in education, using a bibliometric analysis and systematic review of publications in the Scopus database from 2000 to October 2023. Using keywords related to FCM and education, the study retrieved fifty-four publications for frequency analysis and citation metrics. This study showcases its results by leveraging standard bibliometric indicators, encompassing metrics such as publication growth, top-cited publications, country contributions, and preferred publication titles. Findings from the systematic review reveal the potential of FCM in providing explanatory, predictive, reflective, and strategic insights and solutions to numerous educational issues.

Hallucination Rates and Reference Accuracy of ChatGPT and Bard for Systematic Reviews: Comparative Analysis.

Large language models (LLMs) have raised both interest and concern in the academic community. They offer the potential for automating literature search and synthesis for systematic reviews but raise concerns regarding their reliability, as the tendency to generate unsupported (hallucinated) content persist. The aim of the study is to assess the performance of LLMs such as ChatGPT and Bard (subsequently rebranded Gemini) to produce references in the context of scientific writing. The performance of ChatGPT and Bard in replicating the results of human-conducted systematic reviews was assessed. Using systematic reviews pertaining to shoulder rotator cuff pathology, these LLMs were tested by providing the same inclusion criteria and comparing the results with original systematic review references, serving as gold standards. The study used 3 key performance metrics: recall, precision, and F1-score, alongside the hallucination rate. Papers were considered "hallucinated" if any 2 of the following information were wrong: title, first author, or year of publication. In total, 11 systematic reviews across 4 fields yielded 33 prompts to LLMs (3 LLMs×11 reviews), with 471 references analyzed. Precision rates for GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and Bard were 9.4% (13/139), 13.4% (16/119), and 0% (0/104) respectively (P<.001). Recall rates were 11.9% (13/109) for GPT-3.5 and 13.7% (15/109) for GPT-4, with Bard failing to retrieve any relevant papers (P<.001). Hallucination rates stood at 39.6% (55/139) for GPT-3.5, 28.6% (34/119) for GPT-4, and 91.4% (95/104) for Bard (P<.001). Further analysis of nonhallucinated papers retrieved by GPT models revealed significant differences in identifying various criteria, such as randomized studies, participant criteria, and intervention criteria. The study also noted the geographical and open-access biases in the papers retrieved by the LLMs. Given their current performance, it is not recommended for LLMs to be deployed as the primary or exclusive tool for conducting systematic reviews. Any references generated by such models warrant thorough validation by researchers. The high occurrence of hallucinations in LLMs highlights the necessity for refining their training and functionality before confidently using them for rigorous academic purposes.

Effect of digital game intervention on cognitive functions in older adults: a multiple baseline single case experimental design study

BackgroundResidents in nursing homes are prone to cognitive decline affecting memory, visuospatial cognition, and executive functions. Cognitive decline can lead to dementia, necessitating prioritized intervention.MethodsThe current study aimed to investigate whether an intervention using a digital game was effective for preserving and improving the cognitive function of residents in nursing homes. An intervention study was conducted using a single-case AB design with multiple baselines. The participants in the study were five older adults aged 65 and over who do not play digital games regularly. The study ran for 15 weeks, including a baseline (phase A) and an intervention phase (phase B). Phase A had five baselines (5 to 9 weeks) with random participant assignment. In phase B, participants engaged in a digital game (Space Invaders) individually. Cognitive function was assessed as the outcome, measured using the Brain Assessment (performed on a tablet through the Internet) at 16 measurement points. Four of five participants (two female and two male) were included in the analysis, using visual inspection and Bayesian statistics with multi-level modeling.ResultsVisual inspection of the graphs revealed cognitive function score improvements after the intervention for most layers in terms of memory of numbers, memory of words, mental rotation test (visuospatial ability), and total scores in the Brain Assessment. These effects were also significant in the analysis by multi-level modeling.ConclusionsThe results suggest that the use of digital games may be effective for preserving and improving cognitive function among residents of nursing home.Trial registrationThis study was registered in the University Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN000048677; public title: Effect of a Digital Game Intervention for Cognitive Functions in Older People; registration date: August 30, 2022).
