Ethnic church mentoring: buffer against outside prejudice and inside pressure for success

ABSTRACT This study investigates the influence of church mentoring on the psychosocial development of adolescents from immigrant and ethnic minority backgrounds. Framed within ecological systems and sociocultural theories, it examines mentoring processes in fostering positive youth development. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen adolescents, mentors, and parents from a Protestant congregation, primarily comprising immigrants from South Koreaand Hispanic families. Qualitative content analysis identified thematic categories, revealing that multicultural church mentors acted as bridges between first-generation immigrant parents and their U.S.-born offspring, shielding against external prejudice and buffering academic pressures from immigrant parents. They provided guidance on practical issues and served as role models, validating adolescents’ identity and belonging. Findings suggestthe need for mentor training programs and parenting workshops addressing generational differences. Leveraging community resources and relational capital is crucial for promoting positive youth development among immigrant and ethnic minority communities.

The Study of Adolescent Resilience (SOAR): a research protocol

BackgroundAdolescence is a particularly sensitive period of development for military-connected youth, given the socioemotional and physical changes that occur against the backdrop of the military career of their parent(s). Military-connected adolescents face unique stressors relative to their civilian counterparts, such as military relocations, parental absence due to deployments and trainings, and parental military-related physical and mental injury. These stressors may change family dynamics and disrupt social support networks, which can have lasting implications for adolescent health and well-being. At present, very little is known about how the current generation of military-connected adolescents are faring regarding their psychological and physical health, academic achievement, and educational or career aspirations. As part of the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to military families, the U.S. Department of Defense pledged to address these major knowledge gaps by supporting the Study of Adolescent Resilience (SOAR). SOAR's longitudinal design provides a powerful tool for evaluating the effects of military family life on adolescent well-being into early adulthood.Methods and designSOAR is embedded within the larger Millennium Cohort Study, the first U.S. population-based prospective study to investigate long-term health effects of military service among active duty service members. Nearly 40,000 Millennium Cohort participants with adolescent children were invited to complete a web-based self-report survey that included items across interpersonal, socioenvironmental, and health domains, among others. Military parents provided referral information for their adolescent child and another primary parental figure, when available, to be invited to SOAR. This approach allowed survey data to be linked between these three family members (service member, spouse, and adolescent) to promote a comprehensive, family systems-based understanding of military-connected adolescent experiences and determinants of health, risk, and resilience.DiscussionResearch findings will shed light on the enduring impact of military life on adolescents and the nature of associations between military-specific experiences and psychosocial health and well-being. Further, this research will assess modifiable risk and protective factors that may elucidate differences in military-connected adolescent psychosocial development and physical health, academic achievement, and educational and military career aspirations over time.ConclusionsFindings gleaned from this research will be used to inform existing policy and programs designed to promote adolescent resilience.

Abstract: Mental health conditions in adolescent groups are important in the psychosocial development of adolescents. A group of mentally healthy teenagers is a valuable investment and asset for human resources in a country. Mental health is an important aspect in realizing overall health. Adolescence is an important period for developing social and emotional habits that are important for mental well-being. The aim of this research is to determine the picture of mental health in groups of teenagers in senior high schools in Bukittinggi city. The design of this research is an observational study with a cross sectional design. This research was conducted at a high school in Bukittinggi City with a total sample of 118 people taken based on the multistage stratified clustered sampling method. The results of the study showed that there was no relationship between age and gender on the mental disorders of high school students in Bukittinggi City (p>0.05).

With Erikson's theory of social development, we can understand the stages of human development starting from our sensitivity and ability to adapt to the surrounding environment. The purpose of this article is to determine the implementation of Guidance Counseling on improving children's morals at school and to determine whether or not there is an influence of Guidance Counseling on improving children's morals. The aim of this research is also to provide a way for adolescents to find their identity and synthesize the stages of adolescent psychosocial development.

The psychosocial development of adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic was disrupted. Restrictions on social interaction due to the lockdown have an impact on adolescent developmental tasks, which are dominant and only take place in the family environment. The purpose of this study was to describe the role of the family structurally on adolescent welfare. This study used a descriptive observative method, sampling was carried out by screened sampling. The results showed 82,2% of the level of influence of internal factors on family roles in this study was moderate, describing family conditions, in the form of family composition , the influence of gender on beliefs and care roles; high external elements of 54,3% describe the influence of the extended family, and family social contact, with the environment; and family contextual factors in this study were moderate (59,7%) which described ethnicity, cultural influences, social class, religion, and beliefs. Lockdown rules during the pandemic made teenagers spend more time at home than socializing with peers. Support and the role of the family play an important role in the health and developmental tasks of the family during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Parental ties and adolescent psychosocial development being the areas of study, the most recent literature review is undertaken because it is crucial. Objective: The research is done to assess role of parental bonding on adolescents’ Development. The research field's gaps are addressed. Design/Methodology/Approach: The literature for this study was compiled using a variety of secondary sources, including journals, book chapters, conference proceedings and other online sites. The entire body of research has been thoroughly examined and condensed. It is also used to identify research goals and gaps in the field. Findings/Results: The results and limitations of every recent research have been thoroughly examined. The cause of the gap has also been thoroughly investigated, and each work's outcomes have been carefully examined. Originality/Value: This paper intends to examine the pertinent literature that already exists and includes secondary data that was acquired from a number of online sources, including research journals, technical book chapters, conference papers, and a few websites. Psikoloji alanında yapılan pek çok araştırma çocuk ve ergenlerin gelişiminde ebeveynlerin önemli bir etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir. Ebeveynlerin benimsediği davranış ve tepkiler ise farklı ebeveynlik pratikleri olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, çocuğun özerklik kazanmasını zorlaştıran, kendisini ifade etmesine fırsat tanımayan psikolojik kontrol uygulamaları da önemli ebeveyn tepkileri olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu gözden geçirme çalışmasının temel amacı, psikolojik kontrolün ergenlerin gelişimleri üzerindeki etkilerinin ele alındığı farklı çalışmaların sunularak öneminin ortaya konmasıdır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, öncelikle alanyazında psikolojik kontrol kavramının gelişimi ve farklı tanımlarına yer verilmiştir. Ardından ergenlik döneminde ebeveynden algılanan psikolojik kontrolün psikososyal gelişim ile ilişkisine değinilmiştir. Bu kapsamda, özerklik, kimlik gelişimi, kişilerarası ilişkiler, benlik saygısı, duygu düzenleme gibi boyutları içeren çalışmalar ele alınmıştır . Bir sonraki kısımda ise psikolojik ve davranışsal problemler ile ebeveynden algılanan psikolojik kontrolü konu edinen çalışmalar aktarılmıştır. Bu bağlamda, anksiyete, depresif belirtiler, problemli davranışlar gibi içselleştirme ve dışsallaştırma gibi problemlere yönelik araştırmalar sunulmuştur. Ardından, ergenlik döneminde çocuğu olan ebeveynlere yönelik bazı müdahale programlarından örnekler verilerek, etkin ebeveynlik yöntemlerinin ergen gelişimindeki olumlu etkisi vurgulanmıştır. Son olarak, alanyazında yer alan çalışmalar değerlendirilerek, araştırmacı ve uygulayıcılara yönelik öneriler sunulmuştur.

Impact of mask-wearing on child and adolescent psychosocial development: a systematic review

Abstract Background Wearing face masks in public is recommended under certain circumstances in order to prevent infectious diseases transmitted through droplets. The objective was to compile all German and English research results from peer-reviewed journal articles using a sensitive literature search on the effects of mask-wearing for preventing infectious diseases on the psychosocial development of children and adolescents. Methods A systematic review was conducted considering different study designs (search period up until 12 July 2021). The risk of bias in the studies was determined using a risk of bias procedure. A descriptive-narrative synthesis of the results was performed. A search update will be conducted shortly before the conference. Results Thirteen studies were included, and the overall risk of bias was estimated to be high in all primary studies. There are some indications from the included surveys that children, adolescents, and their teachers in (pre)schools perceived facial expression processing as impaired due to mask-wearing, which were confirmed by several experimental studies. Two studies reported psychological symptoms like anxiety and stress as well as concentration and learning problems due to wearing a mask during the COVID-19 pandemic. One survey study during the 2002/2003 SARS pandemic examined oral examination performance in English as a foreign language and showed no difference between the “mask” and “no mask” conditions. The results are preliminary and may be extended due to the search update. Conclusions Only little evidence can be derived on the effects of face masks on different developmental areas of children and adolescents based on the small number of studies. There is a lack of research data regarding the following outcomes: psychological development, language development, emotional development, social behaviour, school success, and participation. Further cluster-randomized controlled trials or longitudinal studies are required. Key messages • Empirical and experimental evidence shows that mask-wearing impairs facial expression among children, adolescents, and teachers in (pre)schools. • Research on the following developmental areas is missing: psychological development, language development, emotional development, social behaviour, school success, and participation.

Social media and adolescent psychosocial development: a systematic review

Adolescents are noted to increasingly utilise social media for communication, and therefore, social media is where much of their psychosocial development takes place. The potential impact of social media on psychosocial development is complex and is an emerging field of research. A systematic review was conducted to investigate existing research relating to social media’s effects on psychosocial development. Good practice in systematic review reporting was followed, aligned to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, and a team of five reviewers were involved in each stage of the review process to enhance objectivity and methodological rigour. The review included 20 studies, published between 2008 and 2019. The findings show a complex relationship between social media and adolescent psychosocial development. Social media was found to involve potential risks, in terms of excessive and problematic use, comparison, and cyberbullying. Social support, from both peers and parents, may buffer these negative impacts. Potential benefits of social media use include supporting identity development and the maintenance of existing peer relationships. Considering the growth of social media use, it is imperative to consider the development and provision of interventions and mental health care services to address the potential risks associated with increased social media use. Psychoeducation with adolescents and parents as to the risks, benefits, and constructive parental supervision of social media is also recommended. The review highlights the need for high-quality empirical research to further clarify the long-term impact of social media use, particularly within the South African context.

Psychosocial problems among adolescents in Urban Slums

The adolescent psychosocial development is the process through which the dependent child becomes a self reliant adult. A large number of adolescents suffer from psychosocial problems and many of these problems are of transient in nature and are often not even noticed. The objective of the study was to find out the prevalence of psychosocial problems among adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted in MGR Nagar, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The study group comprised of 50 adolescents, selected by multistage stratified random sampling. Data was collected on a pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire by interviewing the adolescents and was subsequently analyzed by using suitable statistical package. Anxiety was maximum in adolescent boys whereas conduct disorder was found to be maximum in adolescent girls. Majority of late adolescent boys were attributed to substance abuse. Anxiety was found to be the commonest problem among adolescent males in all religions. Educational difficulties were maximum among Muslim adolescents. The problems per subject (with psycho-social problems) were more in adolescent boys and girls having joint family. None of the class I adolescent girls claimed to have any educational difficulties. A holistic approach to underlying causes of psycho-social problems of adolescents should be undertaken.

20. In an Ethnically/Racially and Socioeconomically Diverse Sample of Adolescents, do Weight Stigma, Family Functioning, and Parenting Practices Predict Disordered Eating Behaviors Eight Years Later?

Weight stigma is a prevalent problem with concerning health consequences in young people. For example, studies in adolescents and young adults have consistently found that weight stigma is associated with higher prevalence of depressive symptoms, low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating behaviors. Because of the crucial role of family members and the home environment for adolescent psychosocial development, it is important to understand the relationship between weight stigma and disordered eating behaviors within the familial context.

Psychosocial Development Research in Adolescence: a Scoping Review

Erikson’s psychosocial development is a well-known and sound framework for adolescent development. However, despite its importance in scientific literature, the scarcity of literature reviews on Erikson’s theory on adolescence calls for an up-to-date systematization. Therefore, this study’s objectives are to understand the extent and nature of published research on Erikson’s psychosocial development in adolescence (10–19 years) in the last decade (2011–2020) and identify directions for meaningful research and intervention. A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, PRISMA-ScR guidelines, and a previous protocol, including a comprehensive search in eight databases. From 932 initial studies, 58 studies were selected. These studies highlighted the burgeoning research on Erikson’s approach, with a more significant representation of North American and European studies. The focus of most studies was on identity formation, presenting cross-cultural evidence of its importance in psychosocial development. Most of the studies used quantitative designs presenting a high number of different measures. Regarding topics and variables, studies emphasized the critical role of identity in adolescents’ development and well-being and the relevance of supporting settings in psychosocial development. However, shortcomings were found regarding the study of online and school as privileged developmental settings for adolescents. Suggestions included the need to consider the process of identity formation in the context of lifespan development and invest in supporting adolescents’ identity formation. Overall, conclusions point out Erikson’s relevance in understanding adolescents’ current challenges while offering valuable research and intervention directions to enhance adolescent growth potential.

Development of a Scale to Measure Psychosocial Risks and Protective Factors in Adolescents

Background: Resilience among adolescents can best be understood by examining the risk and protective factors in the lives of at-risk adolescents. A standardized tool to identify adolescent psychosocial risk and protective factors may help better understand the strengths, vulnerabilities, and the potential for resilience among adolescents. Hence, the present study aims to identify and measure the risk and protective factors in the lives of adolescents. Methods: A sequential exploratory mixed-methods design was used to develop a tool that measures risk and protective factors among adolescents. The qualitative study explored psychosocial risk and protective factors among high-risk adolescents using 4 major domains: individual, family, school, and community. To develop the tool, prisoners (N = 12), caregivers of the prisoners’ children (N = 12), teachers of the prisoners’ children (N = 12), and prison authorities (N = 12) were interviewed about their experiences with prisoners’ children. The interview data were analyzed, and items reflecting the risk and protective factors in the lives of the adolescent children of incarcerated parents were generated. The item pool consisting of 239 items was administered to a sample of 312 rural adolescent students. To validate the risk factors scale and protective factors scale, self-report scales measuring behavior problems, adjustment, well-being, and positivity were used. Results: The new tool developed to measure the risk and protective factors for adolescent psychosocial development was found to have adequate test-retest reliability, content validity, convergent validity, and divergent validity. Conclusion: In this study, a scale to identify psychosocial risk and protective factors was developed and standardized. The tool will be helpful to psychologists and counselors working with adolescents to understand the risks and protective factors present in their lives and design interventions to nurture resilience in them.

Relationship Between Positive Childhood Experiences and Psychological Resilience in University Students: The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem

AbstractChildhood experiences can affect individuals’ self-esteem and psychological resilience during personality and psychosocial development in adolescence and adulthood. The effect of positive childhood experiences on adulthood has rarely been investigated, with most studies focusing on negative aspects of childhood. Evidence shows that they also influence the development of psychological resilience and self-esteem. This study examined the relationship between positive childhood experiences, self-esteem, and psychological resilience. A total of 570 university students completed the Positive Childhood Experience Scale, Brief Resilience Scale and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results of structural equation modelling indicated that positive experiences significantly predicted self-esteem and resilience. Self-esteem also predicted psychological resilience. Most importantly, positive childhood experiences had an indirect effect on resilience through self-esteem. The results suggest that focusing on positive aspects of childhood is as important and functional as dealing with negative ones to contribute to self-esteem and resilience. We suggest that school psychologists and counsellors could integrate these results into intervention programs to improve resilience through increased self-esteem.

PERKEMBANGAN PSIKOSOSIAL ANAK DAN REMAJA PASCA ERUPSI SINABUNG DI KABUPATEN KARO

The eruption of Mount Sinabung is a natural disaster that occurred in Batukarang Village, Payung District, Karo Regency. In addition to physical conditions, this disaster affected the psychosocial condition of the community, especially children and adolescents. As a result of disasters, children and adolescents experience anxiety, stress, fear, PTSD, depression, etc. These symptoms can affect the development of adolescents themselves. This study aims to determine the psychosocial development of children and adolescents after the Sinabung eruption. Descriptive research design with a sample of 94 school-age children and 94 adolescents. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. The results showed that the psychosocial development of school-age children was in good category as many as 6 children (6.4%), and sufficient psychosocial development was 88 children (93.6%). While the psychosocial development of adolescents 81.9% experienced sufficient psychosocial development, 18.1% adolescents experienced good psychosocial development. The results of this study can assist mental nurses in providing psychological and social support after a disaster with a mental nursing approach so that the psychosocial development of disaster victims, especially adolescents, goes well and can improve the mental health of disaster victims.

RISKY SEXUAL AND HEALTH BEHAVIOURS AND IMPACT ON PSYCHO-SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

<p>Adolescents due to the experimentation and exploration drive that characterize the period often engage in risky sexual and health behaviours being ignorant of the consequences on their health and psychological well-being. The study adopted ex-post-facto research design to find out risky sexual and health behaviours and impact on psycho-social development of adolescents in tertiary institutions in Enugu state. Four research questions guided the study. A total of 300 students in 300 and 400 levels in three selected higher institutions in Enugu state formed the sample of the study. Data were collected through questionnaire of 40 items to elicit information on the impact of risky sexual and health behaviours on psycho-social development of adolescents. The instrument was validated by experts in education. Reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha and an alpha coefficient of 0.78 was obtained. Research questions were answered using frequencies, percentages and mean. Result revealed the prevalence of risky sexual and health behaviours among adolescents in tertiary institutions in Enugu state. It also revealed that risky sexual and health behaviours are associated with frustration, low self-esteem, feelings of guilt, sense of regret, abandonment by parents/siblings and loss of self-respect among others. Religion Associated with Strong Positive Youth Development In North Carolina County

Studies like “Religious involvement and adolescent psychosocial development” by Carol Markstrom have researched the relation of religion to human development. Previous studies like hers were able to employ methodologies that provided for a unique perspective. The study undertaken for this paper researched the association of religion with strong positive youth development (PYD) using the five C’s of PYD in psychology: connection, character, compassion, competence, and confidence. This study used a quantitative methodology through surveys that were analyzed to help reach the conclusion of the research. The pattern that emerged through analysis of the survey results indicated that approximately 39% of the participants were religious, which is influenced by the location of this study, a region of the United States commonly known referred to as the Bible Belt. Based on their answers, religion is associated with strong positive youth development. However, it can also be concluded that even those who are neither religious nor spiritual also have a strong positive youth development, just not as strong.

P648 Physical and mental health during COVID-19 quarantine in adolescents with chronic immunocompromised conditions and inflammatory bowel disease

BackgroundSocial connection is a fundamental part of the psychosocial development in adolescence; therefore quarantine has a potentially negative impact in the physical and mental health.Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate physical and mental health indicators in adolescents with preexisting chronic immunocompromised conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) compare to healthy adolescents during COVID-19 quarantine.MethodsA cross-sectional study included 355 adolescents with chronic conditions(IBD, n=44) and 111 healthy adolescents. An online self-rated survey was used to investigate socio-demographic features, healthcare routine and the quarantine impact on physical and mental health. Validated self-reported version of Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire(SDQ) evaluated psychosocial functioning.ResultsNo differences were observed between adolescents with preexisting chronic immunocompromised conditions versus healthy adolescents during quarantine of COVID-19 pandemic for age, sex and ethnicity, as well as for household conditions and schooling(p>0.05). The frequencies of psychosocial functioning abnormalities according to total difficulties SDQ score were high and similar in patients and controls(30% vs. 31%, p=0.775). Logistic regression analysis showed that being female(OR=1.965, 95%CI=1.091–3.541,p=0.024), fear of underlying disease activity/complication(OR=1.009, 95%CI=1.001–1.018, p=0.030) were associated with severe psychosocial dysfunction in adolescents with chronic conditions, whereas school homework(OR=0.449, 95%CI=0.206–0.981,p=0.045), physical activity (OR=0.990, 95%CI=0.981–0.999,p=0.030) and sleep quality(OR=0.986, 95%CI=0.975–0.998,p=0.017) were protective factors. Further analysis showed similar median age, fear (disease activity/complication, immunosuppressive use, and COVID-19), physical activity, sleep difficulties, and total difficulties SDQ score in IBD adolescents versus with chronic conditions (p>0.05). The frequencies of psychosocial functioning abnormalities according to total difficulties score of SDQ were high and similar in IBD adolescents vs. chronic condition(37% vs. 29%, p=0.329), as well sleep difficulties(34% vs. 32%, p=0.797).ConclusionBeing female, fear of underlying disease activity/complication and household members working outside of home were relevant issues for adolescents with preexisting chronic conditions. We also demonstrated that adolescents with IBD during COVID-19 quarantine had high risk of adverse health indicators, particularly psychosocial functioning and sleep difficulties. This study reinforces the need to establish mental health strategies for teens with chronic conditions, particularly during pandemic periods.
