Objective: to analyze the interpersonal relationships between health professionals and psychoactivesubstance users in health care. Methodology: this is an integrative review conducted in theMedical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online and Literatura Latino-Americana e doCaribe em Ciências da Saúde databases. The results were presented through the characterizationof the studies and grouped into thematic categories according to semantic similarity of thecontents. Results: 15 articles were selected, organized into three categories: Stigma; Professionalunpreparedness; and Encounters and disagreements in relationships. Currently, a relationshipbetween health professionals and psychoactive substance users that is impaired by the moraland cultural interface is still evident in health care. Conclusion: interpersonal relationships basedon stigma, prejudice, hostility, violence, punishment, disrespect and embarrassment should bereplaced by an empathetic, welcoming, safe, trusting and bonding relationship to reduce barriersto accessing services.
