Construction of the Chinese Route of Industrial Heritage Based on Spatial and Temporal Distribution Analysis

In the context of cultural routes, in order to achieve overall protection of industrial heritage, the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) was established to organize and promote the entire European industrial heritage. The conservation and utilization of Chinese industrial heritage are currently dominated by individual cases, which limits their potential to contribute to regional sustainable development. There is an urgent need of a conservation system at the regional or national level, to ensure that Chinese industrial heritage conservation effectively contributes to regional sustainable development. This study considers the industrial heritage of China built between 1840 and 1978 to establish the Chinese Industrial Heritage GIS Database (CIHGD). The analysis shows that the distribution of China’s industrial heritage is mainly concentrated in the eastern and southern coastal areas, and the industrial heritage has formed three key regions, 14 key cities, and important railway and water systems located in eastern China. The CRIH facilitates the holistic conservation of China’s industrial heritage and provides basic data for future research on China’s industrial heritage. The objective of this study is to promote the establishment of an information-based management system for industrial heritage in China, and to explore the value evaluation, protection system, and regional tourism of industrial heritage from a national perspective in China.

Conservation Design of Industrial Heritage based on Nonlinear GA Optimization Algorithm and Three-dimensional Reconstructioneconstruction

In order to understand the industrial heritage protection design of Iterative reconstruction, the author proposes a research on industrial heritage protection design based on GA optimization algorithm and Iterative reconstruction. Firstly, the author establishes the 3D model of industrial heritage through Iterative reconstruction, and optimizes the model parameters through GA algorithm to achieve the purpose of protecting and utilizing industrial heritage. Secondly, the author proposes a method of Iterative reconstruction of industrial heritage based on GA algorithm, uses this method to conduct Iterative reconstruction of industrial heritage, and imports the reconstructed model into the 3D model management system for management. This method solves the problem of high reconstruction cost caused by low model quality in traditional Iterative reconstruction, and makes industrial heritage protection design more practical. Finally, an experimental analysis was conducted using a factory building in a certain city as an example. The results showed that the model optimized using the GA algorithm had significantly better performance than traditional reconstruction methods, and could more accurately reflect the spatial form and structural characteristics of industrial heritage, this provided new ideas and methods for the subsequent protection and utilization of industrial heritage. The GA algorithm optimized 3D model established by the author can effectively evaluate industrial heritage in historical urban areas, not only revealing the value of industrial heritage better, but also providing a certain reference for similar work in the future.

Industrial heritage identification process in North Africa: 19th and 20th century flour mills in Algeria

PurposeThe protection of industrial heritage emerged as a major concern when those buildings and installations representative of the industry, became at risk. North Africa, considered the geographical gateway to European countries, experienced enormous industrial activity during the French colonial era. Industrial buildings such as the flour mills, were built during this era of colonial rule. Today, a lack of legislation concerning industrial heritage has left this type of buildings with no protection, leading this paper to a preservation process. The aim of this paper is to locate and identify the flour mills of the 19th and 20th centuries in Algeria.Design/methodology/approachThis research consists of cross-referencing data from archived documents against the geographical location.FindingsThe results obtained are the first step in the process of preservation. The success of this research can be summarized as follows: identification of 88.46% of the flour mills in Algeria by means of the inventory data collected, and their location, with the use of a crisp logic, the remaining 9.62% with the use of fuzzy logic by the attribution of a “fuzzy radius” with a total localization and identification of 98.08%.Originality/valueThe use of both crisp (Boolean) and fuzzy logic as part of the geographical localization method.

Post-Mining goes international: Hurdles to climate neutrality using the example of China

The topic of post-mining is becoming increasingly important globally in times of climate change and sustainability. This includes not only dealing with the post-mining heritage through adequate mine water management or environmental monitoring. Rather, it requires concepts for a successful transition in affected mining regions. China, as the world’s largest mining country, offers an important point of reference here. In coal-intensive regions, economic viability is closely linked to the coal industry. Structural change requires additive policies and restructuring to create, on the one hand, innovative conversion opportunities such as the integration of renewable energies into existing mines. On the other hand, plant closures are followed by unemployment for former workers. Here, on the other hand, the creation of alternative employment and new incentives is needed to minimize the consequences for citizens and the environment. Nevertheless, it can be stated that it is essential to reuse abandoned mines in order to support several factors: Efficient use of existing resources, cost reduction, creation of alternative jobs, protection of industrial heritage, modernization of history, sustainability and green development. The driver behind this research is to actively contribute to a livable sustainable future, nationally and internationally. This area has many research gaps that need to be filled to promote internationalization and individual development. Therefore, the results are transferred from German experiences to an international level by taking China as a dominant coal player into account.

Research on Countermeasures for the Protection and Utilization of Daqing Industrial Heritage

Daqing industrial heritage is an important component of human civilization, and is the material carrier of national spirit, era spirit, and urban culture. At present, the protection and utilization of Daqing industrial heritage is still relatively weak, and it is urgent to accurately grasp the main tasks of the protection and utilization of Daqing industrial heritage based on a deep understanding of the significance of industrial heritage protection and utilization. By selecting a group of outstanding industrial heritage with significant historical value and social influence, large scale, and complete industrial historical features, it is necessary to implement the comprehensive engineering construction of Daqing industrial heritage protection and utilization, promote cultural rescue and protection projects, and comprehensively improve the level of effective protection and rational utilization of Daqing’s industrial heritage.

Research on symbiosis of man, ecology and industry based on catalyst theory

Tianjin’s industrial heritage has witnessed the development of China’s modern industry and carries the city’s memory. Focusing on the symbiosis of man, ecology and industry, we analyze the current situation of industrial heritage protection in Tianjin and apply the catalyst theory to the conservation and renewal of industrial heritage. Taking the Tianjin Steel Mill and Tianjin Medium Plate Mill in Tianjin as an example, based on the results of the questionnaire and the catalyst properties of the site, a research framework of industrial heritage based on catalyst theory is constructed according to the characteristics of the site. We focus on how to guide the catalytic effect to make the industrial symbiosis with ecology and man, and finally achieve the sustainable development of itself and the area. The research on the symbiosis model of man, ecology and industry of industrial heritage based on catalyst theory is actively explored.

Contradictions of indigenous cognition and heritage evaluation under political transformations in a working-class community in Tianjin, China

Over the past few decades, China has undergone thorough reforms. Changes triggered by deindustrialization, market orientation, and land utilization have led to the demolition, replacement, and regeneration of traditional industrial neighborhoods in urban centers. Meanwhile, the indigenous residents, who used to be members of the working class in the Danwei era, have lost the protection of state-owned enterprises, or “Danwei”, and suffered from social disparity, displacement, identity loss, and trauma amid the socialist deindustrialization process. As a socialist country dedicated to regulating overcapitalization and social polarization, neoliberal China has been committed to exploring moderate social transformation strategies in the process of deindustrialization in recent years. In the given example of Tianjin's Mian 3 (an urban regeneration project of an old textile industrial community), both qualitative and quantitative analyses are employed to evaluate the cognitive complexities of residents' needs and place attachment in relation to heritage evaluation. The results from these analyses are further used to examine the problems in the redevelopment of industrial heritage communities and the social expression of the working class. The research shows that the cognitive complexity of the working class should be included in the social value of industrial heritage protection and given more importance in the process of coordinating the development of industrial heritage and its surroundings. In the context of ongoing deindustrialization and urban redevelopment of industrial heritage communities in China and the rest of the world, this study provides theoretical support and data for understanding working-class residents and building sustainable and caring heritage communities.

Research, protection, and possibilities of re-use of post-war industrial heritage in the Czech Republic

Buildings of an industrial nature dated from the 1950s through '80s are often quite interesting from the standpoint of typology, architecture and technology, and correspond to the development of technological industrial efforts of that era. Still, they sit on the periphery of professional interest, in both the Czech Republic and abroad. The topic of industrial architecture which existed by the 1950s is already positioned in the professional spheres on the research and protection of industrial heritage, as well as the methodological development of industrial heritage. Industrial archaeology usually deals only with the industrialization period, and at the same time is difficult for contemporary researchers to postpone the debate forward. Our contemporary research thus plays very important role in evaluation of a typical and atypical examples of industrial buildings of that time. We continually lose many iconic buildings as well as a strata of historical culture as efforts are ongoing to determine both the ways we can protect this portion of industrial heritage and detail the problems that emerge in efforts to reuse it.

Evaluation of Remote Sensing Ecological Index Based on Soil and Water Conservation on the Effectiveness of Management of Abandoned Mine Landscaping Transformation.

Abandoned mines are typical areas of soil erosion. Landscape transformation of abandoned mines is an important means to balance the dual objectives of regional ecological restoration and industrial heritage protection, but the secondary development and construction process of mining relics require long-term monitoring with objective scientific indicators and effective assessment of their management effectiveness. This paper takes Tongluo Mountain Mining Park in Chongqing as an example and uses a remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) based on Landsat-8 image data to assess the spatial and temporal differences in the dynamic changes in the ecological and environmental quality of tertiary relic reserves with different degrees of development and protection in the park. Results showed that: ① The effect of vegetation cover, which can significantly improve soil and water conservation capacity. ② The RSEI is applicable to the evaluation of the effectiveness of ecological management of mines with a large amount of bare soil areas. ③ The mean value of the RSEI in the region as a whole increased by 0.090, and the mean values of the RSEI in the primary, secondary and tertiary relic reserves increased by 0.121, 0.112 and 0.006, respectively. ④ The increase in the RSEI in the study area is mainly related to the significant decrease in the dryness index (NDBSI) and the increase in the humidity index (WET). The remote sensing ecological index can objectively reflect the difference in the spatial and temporal dynamics of the ecological environment in tertiary relic protection, and this study provides a theoretical reference for the ecological assessment of secondary development-based management under difficult site conditions.

Application of Intelligent Inspection Robot in Coal Mine Industrial Heritage Landscape: Taking Wangshiwa Coal Mine as an Example.

This study is developed to explore the role of intelligent inspection robot in the protection and utilization of coal mine industrial heritage. Based on the actual situation of the coal mine, the underground planning protection scope is analyzed. Aiming at the problems of imperfect fire early warning detection technology, management mechanism, high labor cost and low work efficiency in underground protection, the intelligent inspection robot technology is proposed to realize safety tour, underground intelligent management and early warning of underground security, fire protection facilities construction, and intelligent early warning system. This paper analyzes the key technology of intelligent inspection robot in coal mine industrial heritage protection, introduces the composition, structure and implementation method, and proposes its construction path and method. Besides, the path planning, motion obstacle avoidance and sensing detection of the robot are studied. The research shows that the intelligent inspection robot has comprehensive functions and stable performance, and can realize the scientific, intelligent and refined management of industrial heritage protection, which provides a guiding basis for the intelligent protection of coal mine industrial heritage.

Study on the Development Model of the Combination of “Third-Tier” Industrial Heritage and Rural Tourism under the Concept of Urban Image

In order to pay attention to the protection of the third tier industrial heritage, this paper puts forward the protection measures of combining the third tier industrial heritage with tourism based on the concept of urban image. The tourism value of the tertiary industrial heritage is evaluated by using the comprehensive evaluation method. Through the analysis of the tourism value evaluation system combining the three-level industrial heritage and rural tourism in a certain city, the following conclusions are drawn. In the comprehensive evaluation layer, the value of the third tier industrial heritage accounts for the largest weight of 0.5581, indicating that the third tier industrial heritage resources occupy an important position in the third tier industrial heritage tourism value system. Tourism development conditions also account for a large proportion, which explains that while adhering to the principle of third tier industrial heritage protection, we should pay attention to the consideration of tourism development conditions. It once again emphasizes the importance of the third tier industrial heritage for the development of industrial heritage tourism and the significance of the protection of the third tier industrial heritage for tourism development. In the three-level evaluation layer of industrial heritage and rural tourism, the historical and cultural value and social and cultural value have the largest weight. They are the leading factor of the combined value of tertiary industrial heritage and rural tourism. Historical and cultural value is one of the important meanings of three-level industrial heritage protection and also the essence of the combined development of third-level industrial heritage tourism and rural tourism. Social value determines the recognition of tourists and people to participate in the development of tourism. In the evaluation layer of tourism development conditions, the development potential is particularly prominent. The development potential is the characteristic of the third tier industrial heritage tourism of a city. The development of the third tier industrial heritage tourism of a city must be combined with the local characteristics to highlight the differences.

Stewardship of Industrial Heritage Protection in Typical Western European and Chinese Regions: Values and Dilemmas

Along with the increase in modern industry, original facilities and cultures have disappeared progressively, leading to the disappearance of traditional values. However, from the perspective of the stewardship of industrial heritage, preservation is vital for Western Europe, where the Industrial Revolution emerged firstly, and it has leading technology in terms of the advanced stewardship of industrial heritage protection. Meanwhile, there is a large market for industrial heritage growth in China, but its stewardship began later. Horizontal and vertical research into the stewardship of the industrial heritage of these two regions offers a review of the developed industrial regions and experiences for developing industrial regions in their future expansion. By analysing the values and dilemmas and the features of the legal, administrative, and fund guarantee systems, this paper summarizes the advanced expertise of the stewardship of industrial heritage in Western Europe and China and proposes strategies based on them.

RESEARCH ON THE STRATEGY OF INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE PROTECTION AND RENEWAL

Abstract. In the post industrial era, with the development of urban economy and the upgrading of industrial structure, a large number of industrial enterprises in the city transfer from the city centre to the periphery of the city in order to relieve the pressure of urban land shortage and seek their own development. Therefore, the idle land left behind is favoured by the real estate development and emerging industries. As an important space carrier for the continuation of urban context and economic development, the industrial buildings left behind are very popular. Its protection and reuse are related to the development of regional economy and the revival of culture. Under the background of urban renewal, how to properly protect and update the modern industrial heritage to realize the organic integration of the new and old system has become an important topic of heritage protection in China.Today, the transformation of industrial heritage is in full swing. Although the research in the field of industrial heritage in China has started relatively late and the domestic practical experience and related research depth are not enough to form a complete theoretical system, the society has reached a common sense of the protection and renewal of industrial heritage. In January 2018, the first batch of China's industrial heritage protection list was officially released, making China's industrial heritage protection and renewal more scientific and standardized, combining with urban renewal to promote the rapid development of modern urban culture and economy, environmental protection and resource utilization.From the point of view of “protection and renewal”, the paper summarizes the different value cognition of industrial building heritage, and discusses the relationship between the protection and reuse of industrial building heritage, and studies the relevant strategies for the protection and reuse of industrial building heritage, so as to provide reference for the research and development of other industrial building heritage.

A Preliminary Study on Industrial Landscape Planning and Spatial Layout in Belgium

As the material carrier of industrial heritage, industrial landscape planning integrates industrial heritage, post-industrial, and industrial tourism landscapes. In this study, we define the concept of industrial landscape planning. As a subsystem of urban planning, we study industrial landscape planning by using the theories and methods of urban planning. As an example, we consider Belgium and identify the main categories of industrial landscape planning as industrial heritage landscape and industrial tourism landscape. We use an ArcGIS spatial analysis tool and kernel density calculations and reveal the characteristics of four clusters of industrial heritage spatial layout in Belgium, which match its located industrial development route. Each cluster has unique regional characteristics that were spontaneously formed according to existing social and natural resources. At the level of urban planning, there is a lack of unified re-creation. Urban planning is relatively separated from the protection of industrial heritage in Belgium.

Thoughts on the Discipline Attribution of Industrial Archaeology

Industrial archaeology started developing in China in the 1950s. It is a subject of research and protection of industrial heritage, and has become an important discipline in China.By reviewing the rise of the industrial archeology, It is presented that, due to differences between industrial heritage and antiques, the research methods, findings, focuses and the core values of industrial archeology are very different from those of traditional archeology. The author argues that to classify industrial archaeology as a sub-discipline of archaeology remains to be considered. With the developments and improvements of industrial archaeology, its scope as a discipline will gradually become clear. Moreover, interdisciplinary research is helpful for the development and improvement of industrial archaeology.

Research on the Utilization Mode of Underground Space in the Protection of Shanghai’s Industrial Architecture Heritage

With the arrival of the era of stock optimization, urban existing industrial areas and industrial buildings through renovation and upgrading to improve the building performance and expand the building function, more and more become an important content of urban renewal. With rich industrial building heritages in Shanghai as an example, the study was based on the ground of the industrial heritage protection status and function of underground space utilization, exploring the development and utilization of underground space to realize city both with industrial zone industrial building heritages protection development, expansion of land space and function optimization, summarized based on the industrial building heritages protection of underground space utilization patterns and their characteristics. It can provide a reference for the existing urban environmental stock renewal and expansion.

Industrial heritage preservation and the urban revitalisation process in Belgrade

ABSTRACT Urban regeneration is often driven by economic interests, while the preservation of the meaning and memory of a place is neglected. This could be considered as a reason a series of civil initiatives emerged in Belgrade to prevent damage to the built heritage and to indicate the need for stronger citizen involvement in the city’s development processes. This paper will focus on the issues of the Belgrade waterfront industrial heritage protection process by exploring eleven case studies, observed through a framework that includes key actors in the protection process. In order to determine the level of citizen participation in this process, the degree of their activity was studied by analyzing the social media content through which they communicate about this particular topic. Furthermore, possibilities of different approaches in presentation and utilization of the abandoned industrial heritage will be investigated, in order to define common procedures that will be in line with the city development goals, citizen expectations and heritage protection measures.

The Preservation, Renewal and Cultural Remolding of Industrial Heritage under the Background of Urban Double Construction: A Case Study of Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing

“Urban renovation and ecological restoration” is an effective means to control “Urban disease”, improve the living environment and change the urban development mode. This article from the perspective of “Urban renovation and ecological restoration” by Nanjing Jinling shipyard development problems, from the ecological restoration, cultural remodeling and function transformation and other respects, discusses the current Jinling shipyard area between industrial heritage protection and cultural inheritance update problem. Using field research, literature reading, case study and other methods, and put forward corresponding planning strategies and suggestions. Integrate the needs of people’s livelihood with urban industrial memory to realize the maximum protection, renewal and utilization of industrial heritage areas.

Study on Industrial Heritage Protection and Reuse Design of Dahua Textile Mill in Guangyuan City

The industrial heritage has a huge potential value. At present, China strongly called people to pay attention on protection and development of the industrial heritage. The project is closely to the call of national development industrial culture, in Guangyuan city Dahua mills as the foothold to study the protection and reuse of industrial heritage, improve production and living environment, promote the development of regional economy, finally realization of industrial heritage protection and sustainable development goals. This project uses SketchUp, Photoshop and other design softwares to express the graphic representation of the reuse design of Dahua Yarn factory, and to explore and study the protection and reuse design of industrial heritage. In the author’s opinion, in the protection and reuse design of industrial heritage, the occurrence of “formalization” should be avoided, and the reuse design scheme should be formulated according to the characteristics of specific industrial heritage. In combination with the project itself, tourism mode or other modes may not be necessary. There are many problems, and we need new thinking in this area, as well as more practice.
