Thoughts on the Discipline Attribution of Industrial Archaeology

Industrial archaeology started developing in China in the 1950s. It is a subject of research and protection of industrial heritage, and has become an important discipline in China.By reviewing the rise of the industrial archeology, It is presented that, due to differences between industrial heritage and antiques, the research methods, findings, focuses and the core values of industrial archeology are very different from those of traditional archeology. The author argues that to classify industrial archaeology as a sub-discipline of archaeology remains to be considered. With the developments and improvements of industrial archaeology, its scope as a discipline will gradually become clear. Moreover, interdisciplinary research is helpful for the development and improvement of industrial archaeology.

Research on the Utilization Mode of Underground Space in the Protection of Shanghai’s Industrial Architecture Heritage

With the arrival of the era of stock optimization, urban existing industrial areas and industrial buildings through renovation and upgrading to improve the building performance and expand the building function, more and more become an important content of urban renewal. With rich industrial building heritages in Shanghai as an example, the study was based on the ground of the industrial heritage protection status and function of underground space utilization, exploring the development and utilization of underground space to realize city both with industrial zone industrial building heritages protection development, expansion of land space and function optimization, summarized based on the industrial building heritages protection of underground space utilization patterns and their characteristics. It can provide a reference for the existing urban environmental stock renewal and expansion.

Industrial heritage preservation and the urban revitalisation process in Belgrade

ABSTRACT Urban regeneration is often driven by economic interests, while the preservation of the meaning and memory of a place is neglected. This could be considered as a reason a series of civil initiatives emerged in Belgrade to prevent damage to the built heritage and to indicate the need for stronger citizen involvement in the city’s development processes. This paper will focus on the issues of the Belgrade waterfront industrial heritage protection process by exploring eleven case studies, observed through a framework that includes key actors in the protection process. In order to determine the level of citizen participation in this process, the degree of their activity was studied by analyzing the social media content through which they communicate about this particular topic. Furthermore, possibilities of different approaches in presentation and utilization of the abandoned industrial heritage will be investigated, in order to define common procedures that will be in line with the city development goals, citizen expectations and heritage protection measures.

The Preservation, Renewal and Cultural Remolding of Industrial Heritage under the Background of Urban Double Construction: A Case Study of Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing

“Urban renovation and ecological restoration” is an effective means to control “Urban disease”, improve the living environment and change the urban development mode. This article from the perspective of “Urban renovation and ecological restoration” by Nanjing Jinling shipyard development problems, from the ecological restoration, cultural remodeling and function transformation and other respects, discusses the current Jinling shipyard area between industrial heritage protection and cultural inheritance update problem. Using field research, literature reading, case study and other methods, and put forward corresponding planning strategies and suggestions. Integrate the needs of people’s livelihood with urban industrial memory to realize the maximum protection, renewal and utilization of industrial heritage areas.

Study on Industrial Heritage Protection and Reuse Design of Dahua Textile Mill in Guangyuan City

The industrial heritage has a huge potential value. At present, China strongly called people to pay attention on protection and development of the industrial heritage. The project is closely to the call of national development industrial culture, in Guangyuan city Dahua mills as the foothold to study the protection and reuse of industrial heritage, improve production and living environment, promote the development of regional economy, finally realization of industrial heritage protection and sustainable development goals. This project uses SketchUp, Photoshop and other design softwares to express the graphic representation of the reuse design of Dahua Yarn factory, and to explore and study the protection and reuse design of industrial heritage. In the author’s opinion, in the protection and reuse design of industrial heritage, the occurrence of “formalization” should be avoided, and the reuse design scheme should be formulated according to the characteristics of specific industrial heritage. In combination with the project itself, tourism mode or other modes may not be necessary. There are many problems, and we need new thinking in this area, as well as more practice.

The Possibilities of Preservation, Regeneration and Presentation of Industrial Heritage: The Case of Old Mint “A.D.” on Belgrade Riverfront

This paper aims to explore industrial heritage of Belgrade that is located in the city center and therefore, has considerable potential for future architectural and urban development of the Serbian capital. The whole Belgrade riverfront area along the Sava and the Danube Rivers has a large number of abandoned industrial buildings that have significant value and need to be preserved and revitalized. This paper represents a research project conducted by lecturers at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade in the course History and Theory 1—Visual Culture in Architectural Theory and Practice. In order to provide productive research, we have employed the case study method based on the old Mint “A.D.”, which we have chosen as a characteristic example of Belgrade’s industrial heritage architecture. An important goal of this research is to provide professional information and raise public awareness about the importance and potential of industrial heritage for the future economic, cultural, social and tourist development of the city. This paper analyzes possibilities to comprehend the problems of the city’s industrial heritage protection regarding its historical and urban context, its genesis, authenticity, identity, cultural, architectural, economic, social, productive, creative and environmental values. According to that, the main goal of this research is concentrated on the sustainable preservation of specific cultural tangible and intangible values, spirit of the place, city identity and historic cityscape values that characterize industrial heritage in the social, cultural, natural and built environmental systems.

Using Industrial Cultural Heritage to Transform and Develop Resource-Based Cities

To protect industrial cultural heritage, the methods of overall protection and utilization of industrial heritage were put forward in the transformation and development of resource-based cities. Taking Chongqing, a famous old industrial city in China, as the research object, from the cultural heritage, history, architecture, urban planning and other disciplines, the construction of Chongqing industrial heritage protection theory and practice methods were explored to guide the protection and utilization of Chongqing industrial heritage. A progressive evaluation method from the whole to the local was established. Industrial cities, typical corporate and architectural heritage were evaluated. The overall characteristics of urban industrial development were reflected. The renewal of old industrial areas and the protection of industrial heritage were elaborated through the overall co-ordination of urban design and detailed planning. The results showed that it was the key to integrate the protection elements and requirements into the detailed urban control planning. Therefore, special planning plays an important role in protecting industrial heritage.

Study on Industrial Heritage Regeneration Design for Creative Industry Park in Nanchang City

Along with the development of the urban economy and the society, some of the industries in the city cannot meet the economic demand in the late 21st century due to the technological progress, the economic transformation, the employment change and the social and political transformation. Therefore, some of the city’s space has lost its original function and meaning. Many factories and office buildings that are no longer suitable for the development of urban center need to be moved out of the center of the city. These urban spaces have the industrial memory of the city and are the historical heritage of industrialized cities. From the point of view of the layout of creative industry, this paper conducts planning study on the space of cultural and creative parks oriented to the reconstruction of industrial heritage, and explores the development mode of the cultural and creative industrial park, which is suitable for the cultural characteristics of Nanchang city and has a forward-looking vision to provide reference for the construction of cultural and creative park, the protection of industrial heritage, the adjustment of industrial structure and the improvement of urban competitiveness of Nanchang.

The main aim of the article is the assessment of development prospects for the industrial heritage protection institutions in Poland on the example of the Gorny Śląsk region. To achieve this aim, the paper presents the results of the SWOT analysis and the PESTEL analysis of the International Documentation and Research Centre on Industrial Heritage for Tourism. According to the obtained results, the Centre’s strengths – including the financial support from the Zabrze City Office – and the opportunities in the form of increasing popularity of industrial tourism allow for a positive assessment of the Centre’s development prospects. Nevertheless, its continued existence and development require a complete strategy and its consistent implementation.

Study on the Protection and Reuse of Industrial Heritage in Resourse-Based Cities—DaQing

Industrial heritage, which is a new type of human cultural heritage categories. It has significant meaning to improve the grade of the city and to keep the city region characteristic as well as the maintenance of urban historical style and features. With the development of urban industrialization process, as a resource-based city, Daqing has rich industrial heritage. This paper systematically summarizes the value characteristics of industrial heritage in Daqing by means of literature search and field investigation. Besides, it combines with domestic and foreign outstanding industrial heritage protection and reuse method, which are proposed for Daqing petroleum industrial heritage protection and reuse feasibility Suggestions.

Protection of the Milestones of Industry and Technology from the Technological Perspective

Industrial heritage is the important cultural resource. The protection of industrial heritage involves different fields and needs inter-disciplinary studies. It is quite necessary for China to save some valuable remains as the milestones of industrialization from the perspective of technological history. The government should plan the industrial development and landscape-design in order that some heritages will be integrated into the development planning of industry and culture.

Spatial–temporal distribution characteristics of industrial heritage protection and the influencing factors in a Chinese city: a case study of the Tiexi old industrial district in Shenyang

ABSTRACTIn this article, the temporal and spatial distribution of industrial heritage protection was presented, using the Tiexi old industrial district of Shenyang as a typical case. An explanatory framework was constructed to explain the selected process of industrial heritage. The findings indicate that the highly selective process and the temporal spatial transformation of industrial heritage have been driven by economic, cultural and institutional factors. Tiexi old industrial district is not a single case, but reflects the history and general problems of conserving industrial heritage in China. The case of Tiexi contributes to understanding Chinese industrial heritage in three aspects. First, as to temporal character, there is an excessive concentration ignoring modern and contemporary industrial heritage. Second, from the perspective of space, the fragmented protection mode makes industrial heritage an ‘enclave’ like lonely islands, thus affecting the overall image of industrial culture. And third, as far as institutional factors are concerned, the government plays the leading role while the workers and other important stakeholders are missing.

The Thinking of Current Industrial Heritage Protection Caused by FAW Industrial Historical and Cultural Blocks

Through the analysis of historical and cultural blocks protection of the China FAW, this article puts forward the shift from the building to the blocks about the industrial heritage protection in the new period, thinks the protection category of industrial heritage should be expanded moderately and pays attention to the life authenticity protection. This paper lays stress on the collection of industrial heritage historical information to form the urban culture resources characteristic and also on the industrial tourism in the development of cities, then embodies the thinking of the industrial city value in the field of industrial heritage. Finally, the paper presents the urban industrial heritage as a resource should be carried on the overall evaluation and reservation, should be established the related planning systematically and should be protected, developed and utilized reasonably.

The Thinking of Industrial Heritage Conservation and City Development from the View of CSM

Ce memorandum se penche sur la situation actuelle de la protection du patrimoine industriel en Chine. Fonde sur l’analyse des resultats d’une etude, il est divise en trois parties : l’etendue du patrimoine industriel en Chine ; les etapes du developpement de l’industrie chinoise moderne et le patrimoine industriel potentiel en Chine ; et enfin, la situation actuelle de la protection du patrimoine industriel en Chine. En tant que champ nouveau et en developpement, ce memorandum traite des enjeux theoriques comme pratiques.

China's First Automobile Factory of Industrial Heritage of Protection and Utilization

Case study on the redevelopment of industrial wasteland in resource-exhausted mining area

In the resource-exhausted mining regions, because of the finish of mine production and the phenomenon of idle land resources, the number of industrial wastelands has been increasingly growing. In this paper the causes, characteristics and the developing laws with time and spaces of the industrial wastelands were analyzed in the case of Jiawang mining region firstly. Secondly, the problems and the impact factors of the further development of industrial wasteland were discussed; meanwhile the concept of “innovative integration” of the resource was introduced in order to emphasize the importance of redevelopment of industrial wasteland, which can be regarded as the new resource of the mining region. Finally the strategies and approaches of the redevelopment and reutilization of the mining industrial wastelands were discussed in the view of land development, industrial restructuring, and integration of spatial distribution, ecological environment restoration, protection of industrial heritage in the mining area.
