Enhancing Ion Adsorption Capability through the Strong Interaction in Co9S8‐Carbon Hybrids Achieves Superior Sodium Ion Storage

AbstractMetal sulfides materials are promising anode candidates for Na+ storage due to their low cost and high theoretical capacity, while the complex phase transition and inevitable volume expansion during cycling restrain their practical applications. Herein, a simple one‐pot manipulation strategy was designed to construct Co9S8 nanoparticles strongly encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (Co9S8@C/NTs) composite structure with enhanced structural stability and reaction kinetics, resulting in greatly improved Na+ storage performance. Specifically, the obtained Co9S8@C/NTs could exhibit a remarkable capacity of 500 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 100 cycles and exceptional cycling stability over 600 cycles with 88 % capacity retention at 1 A g−1. Furthermore, the theoretical calculations combined with systematic characterizations confirm that the strong interaction between Co9S8 and the carbon matrix could greatly enhance the Na+ adsorption ability and facilitate the electron transfer dynamics for superior Na+ storage capability. More importantly, the full cell device can deliver an outstanding energy density of 144.32 Wh kg−1 and a decent cycling life with 82 % capacity retention of almost 100 cycles at 0.1 A g−1. This work could provide more valuable insights for designing advanced metal sulfide nanocomposites and demonstrate fascinating prospects for commercial application.

MOF-derived nanozyme CuOx@C and its application for cascade colorimetric detection of phytosterols.

Phytosterols (PSs), a class of naturally occurring bioactive lipid compounds, have been found to possess a significant cholesterol-lowering effect. In developing countries, the consumption of rapeseed oil is the primary pathway of PS intake for the general population. However, developing low-cost, real-time, and high-throughput screening techniques for PSs remains a challenge. Here, a Cu-based nanocomposite CuOx@C was synthesized via a simple method of the calcination of HKUST-1 and systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The CuOx@C demonstrated excellent peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity, functioning as a peroxidase mimic to facilitate the catalysis of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into its oxidized form (oxTMB), thereby initiating a discernible color response. On the basis of this discovery, a CuOx@C-based colorimetric method for detecting total sterols in rapeseed was successfully constructed via cascade reactions. After optimizing the conditions, the high-throughput screening of total sterols in rapeseed could be completed in only 21min, which significantly facilitated the sensing of PSs. A linear range of 0.6-6mg/g was achieved for the detection of total sterols in rapeseed samples, thereby satisfying the requirements for detection. In addition, due to the high stability of CuOx@C and the specificity of cholesterol oxidase, the developed method had excellent stability and selectivity toward PSs, indicating that this work has huge prospects for commercial application. This innovative work overcomes the limitation of the instrumental method and provides a portable and reliable tool for total sterols detection. It can also facilitate the development of oilseeds with a high content of PSs.

WOx boosted hollow Ni nanoreactors for the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derivatives

Reasonable design of non-noble metal catalysts with hollow open structure for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin derivatives to value-added chemicals is of great significance but challenging. Herein, a novel MOF-derived multilayer hollow sphere coated nickel‑tungsten bimetallic catalyst (Ni2-WOx@CN-700) was fabricated via by confined pyrolysis strategy using bimetallic MOFs as a self-sacrificial template, which exhibits robust activity for the typical model HDO of vanillin to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (Yield of 100 % at 140 °C for no less than 10 cycles). The characterizations revealed that WOx facilitated the dispersion of Ni nanoparticles and adjusted the acidic capacity of the catalyst through the formed Ni-WOx heterojunction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirms that WOx species enhanced the electron-rich nature of the active sites, while the adsorption energies of H2 and vanillin on Ni-WOx decreased from −0.572 eV and − 0.622 eV on Ni to −3.969 eV and − 4.922 eV, respectively. These results further indicated that the high activity of Ni2-WOx@CN-700 was attributed to the Ni-WOx heterojunction. Based on the characterizations and the thermodynamic calculations, the reaction mechanism was proposed. In addition, the catalyst shows good substrate universality, which enables its good commercial application prospect.

Integrating glycolysis and enzymatic catalyst to convert waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) into terephthalic acid

The current society has an increasing demand for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Due to its high crystallinity and hydrophobicity, PET could be hardly degraded for high-value utilization. Besides, the escalating accumulation of waste PET has also led to significant environmental issues. In this study, a convenient and cost-efficient industrial strategy featuring the integration of glycolysis and enzymatic catalysis has been developed for the selective conversion of PET into terephthalic acid (TPA), which provides a method for colored waste PET degradation. Without the need for complex purifying processes, the products of glycolysis directly initiate the next round of the enzymatic system. Through this system, a total yield of 72.47 % of bis-2-(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate(BHET) and mono-(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate(MHET) was produced by glycolysis loading sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) catalyst, and the enzyme system almost completely converted a substrate concentration of 100 g/L within 48 h, producing 50.36 g/L TPA. Besides, the product problem of pink color in the air after acidification caused by cobalt ions was solved by resin adsorption. In general, the glycolysis and enzymatic catalysis system in this study has prospects for commercial application due to its value for colored waste PET recycling, which reduces the environmental burden caused by waste PET.

Enhancing the efficiency of air-processed (Cu, Ag)2ZnSn(S, Se)4 solar cells by regulating the band tail and interface recombination

Air-processed kesterite solar cells show excellent prospects for commercial application because they are suitable for large-scale production. This study shows how the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of (Cu, Ag)2ZnSn(S, Se)4 solar cells can be improved by adjusting the annealing time during the selenization process at a low temperature of 70 °C. Enhancement of PCE is achieved when the annealing time is 240 s. The primary determinant of enhanced PCE is a reduction in reverse saturation current density (J0) and ideality factor (A). Examination of depth characterization indicated that the decrease in J0 and A can be ascribed to the inhibition of [2CuZn + SnZn] defects cluster, which is mainly accountable for the band tail states, and the suppression of interface recombination.

Application of Eu(III) activated tungstates in solid state lighting

Tungstates play a major role in the, now for more than 60 years, ongoing scientific research of Eu(III) activated phosphors. Similarly, to other compounds featuring a closed shell transition metal anion like molybdates, vanadates, niobdates, tantalates, and tungstates are a family of materials that offer a wide range of potential host matrices for rare earth ions. Furthermore, tungstates provide several favourable characteristics like facile synthetic conditions via solid state synthesis, the possibility of high activator concentrations (low concentrations quenching), as well as intrinsic sensitization of lanthanides ions through a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (W6+/O2−). This review sets in by discussing the fundamentals of Eu(III) luminescence followed by a closer look at some general features of tungstates and their respective intrinsic luminescence. Various Eu(III) activated tungstates are explored in detail regarding their synthesis conditions and optical properties. Their compositional makeups and structures are correlated to the resulting optical properties. Potential strategies to improve the luminescent efficiency of new rare earth doped tungstates are derived from these correlations. In the closing section some general remarks regarding thermal quenching, concentration quenching, and charge transfer energies are discussed. Finally, comparisons to the related molybdates are drawn and the prospects of commercial application towards different fields of optical technologies are explored.

Chitosan anchored nZVI bionanocomposites for treatment of textile wastewater: Optimization, mechanism, and phytotoxic assessment

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on treating textile wastewater due to its escalating threat to aquatic ecosystems and exposed communities. The present study investigates the adsorption efficacy of biopolymer functionalized nanoscale zero-valent iron (CS@nZVI) composite for the treatment of textile wastewater using the RSM-CCD model. The structure and morphology of CS@nZVI were characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, and EDX. CS@nZVI was then evaluated for its adsorption potential in removing COD, color, and other physico-chemical parameters from textile wastewater. The results showed the high efficacy of CS@nZVI for COD and color removal from textile wastewater. Under optimal conditions (pH 6, contact time 60 min, and 1.84 g CS@nZVI), COD removal reached a maximum of 85.53%, and decolorization efficiency was found to be 89.73%. The coefficient of determination R2 (0.98) and AIC (269.75) values suggested quadratic model as the best-fitted model for optimizing the process parameters for COD removal. Additionally, the physico-chemical parameters were found to be within permissible limits after treatment with CS@nZVI. The influence of coexisting ions on COD removal followed the order PO43− > SO42− > Cl− >Na+ > Ca2+. The kinetics data fitted well with the pseudo-first-order reaction, indicating physisorption as the primary mechanism. The thermodynamic study revealed the endothermic nature of the removal process. Reusability tests demonstrated that great regeneration capacity of spent CS@nZVIafter five consecutive cycles. Furthermore, toxicological studies showed reduced toxicity in treated samples, leading to improved growth of Vigna radiata L. These findings suggest that CS@nZVI bionanocomposites could serve as an efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly remediation agent for the treatment of textile effluents, presenting significant prospects for commercial applications.

Research on Multi-Domain Intelligent Customer Service Dialog Modeling with Integrated Transfer Learning Strategies

Abstract The intelligent customer service dialog model is centered on human-machine dialog, which has good prospects for commercial applications in multiple domains. In this paper, we use the Siamese-LSTM model to do vectorization of questions in the FAQ question and answer database to get the semantic representation vector of sentences, and then use the approximate retrieval algorithm to index the question and answer database and perform approximate nearest-neighbor retrieval of the query. After completing the question query, migration learning is employed to create a mapping between input questions and human responses, enabling the model to produce sentences that are similar to human responses. Tests show that the task success rate gradually stabilizes around 0.80 at about the 100th round and fluctuates up to around 0.986 after that. For the average number of conversation rounds, migration learning improves the conversation efficiency of intelligent customer service, and the average number of conversation rounds gradually stabilizes at about 150 rounds and eventually stabilizes at about 4.2 rounds as the number of training rounds increases. The transfer learning strategy helps machine responses to be as close to human responses as possible.

Screen-printed electrode modified with MoO3-MoS2/Ni porous array for sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensor

A MoO3-MoS2/Ni porous micro/nano array was successfully prepared by two-step electrodeposition using a screen-printed electrode as the substrate and colloidal spheres as a template. Owing to defects in the MoO3-MoS2 micro/nanostructure and the characteristics of the edge active sites, the modified electrode performs well as a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. The sensitivity of the screen-printed electrode modified with MoO3-MoS2/Ni porous array is 2278 μA mM−1 cm−2 in the linear range of 0.5 μM–2 mM and 1421 μA mM−1 cm−2 in the linear range of 2–5.5 mM, with a low detection limit of 0.2 μM. The structure of the MoO3-MoS2/Ni porous array electrode is ordered, and the preparation and test procedure are simple. The use of a screen-printed electrode as a substrate confers novelty to the synthesis strategy of the non-enzymatic glucose sensor, with good prospects for commercial application.

Quinones for Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Battery: A Prospective on Redox Potential, Solubility, and Stability

AbstractIn recent years, there has been considerable interest in the potential of quinones as a promising category of electroactive species for use in aqueous organic redox flow batteries. These materials offer tunable properties and the ability to function as both positive and negative electrolytes, making them highly versatile and suitable for a range of applications. Ongoing research has focused on improving the stability, solubility, and performance of quinones, with a particular emphasis on the creation of stable negolytes. The pairing of these advancements with alternate chemistries has created new prospects for commercial applications. However, challenges persist regarding the stability of quinones in high‐potential electrolytes and the limited number of viable quinones available. Despite these obstacles, significant strides have been made, and the potential for quinones to revolutionize energy storage technology is vast. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in this area, with a specific focus on redox potential, solubility, and stability, and offers valuable insights into the future of quinone‐based aqueous organic redox flow batteries.

High mass loading and additive-free prussian blue analogue based flexible electrodes for Na-ion supercapacitors

Supercapacitor electrodes often suffer from the low mass loading of active substances and the unsatisfactory ion/charge transport features due to the use of various additives. Exploring high mass loading and additive-free electrodes is of huge significance to develop advanced supercapacitors with commercial application prospects, which still remains challenging. Herein, high mass loading CoFe-prussian blue analogue (CoFe-PBA) electrodes are developed by a facile co-precipitation method using activated carbon cloth (ACC) as the flexible substrate. The homogeneous nanocube structure, large specific surface area (143.9 m2 g−1) and appropriate pore size distribution (3.4 nm) of the CoFe-PBA endow the as-prepared CoFe-PBA/ACC electrodes with low resistance and appealing ion diffusion characteristics. Typically, the high areal capacitance (1155.0 mF cm−2 at 0.5 mA cm−2) is obtained for high mass loading CoFe-PBA/ACC electrodes (9.7 mg cm−2). Furthermore, symmetrical flexible supercapacitors (FSCs) are constructed using CoFe-PBA/ACC electrodes and Na2SO4/polyving alcohol (Na2SO4/PVA) gel electrolyte, achieving superior stability (85.6% capacitance retention after 5,000 cycles), maximum energy density of 33.8 μWh cm−2 at 200.0 μW cm−2 and promising mechanical flexibility. This work is expected to offer inspirations for the development of high mass loading and additive-free electrodes for FSCs.

A 3D phytic acid cross-linked high-porous conductive hydrogel integrating g-C3N4 for electrochemical multiplex sensing of heavy metal ions

It is a great challenge to develop an effective super-sensitive capture method for multiplex heavy metal ions (HMIs), because HMIs is extremely toxic to public health and the environment, what's more their contamination is usually multiplex ions pollution. In this work, a 3D high-porous conductive polymer hydrogel was designed and prepared with high-stable and easy mass production, which is very favorable for the industrialization. The polymer hydrogel (g–C3N4–P(Ani-Py)-PAAM) was formed from the mixture of aniline pyrrole copolymer and acrylamide cross-linked with phytic acid as dopant and cross-linker and integrated with g-C3N4. The 3D networked high-porous hydrogel not only exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, but also provides a large surface area for increasing the number of immobilized ions. Importantly, the 3D high-porous conductive polymer hydrogel was applied successfully in electrochemical multiplex sensing of HIMs. The prepared sensor used differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry exhibited high sensitivities, low detection limit and wide detection ranges for Cd2+, Pb2+, Hg2+ and Cu2+, respectively. Moreover, the sensor showed a high accuracy in lake water test. The preparation and application of the hydrogel in electrochemical sensor provided an availability strategy to capture and detect the various HMIs by electrochemistry in solution and has great commercial application prospect.

Oxygen removal and silicon recovery from polycrystalline silicon kerf loss by combining vacuum magnesium thermal reduction and hydrochloric acid leaching

With the strengthened awareness of environmental protection and the growing interests of wastes recycling, silicon recovery from polycrystalline silicon kerf loss (PSKL) has drawn extensive attentions all over the world. In this paper, an efficient and environmental friendly approach for oxygen removal and silicon recovery from PSKL by combining vacuum magnesium thermal reduction (VMTR) and hydrochloric acid leaching was proposed. The effects of temperature, duration and particle size on the reduction of PSKL were investigated thoroughly. It is proved that the amorphous SiO2 in PSKL can be reduced by magnesium vapor at 923 K to generate MgO, and then the produced MgO can be dissolved by hydrochloric acid to eliminate the impurity oxygen. The oxygen removal fraction and the silicon recovery efficiency attained 98.43% and 94.46%, respectively, under the optimal conditions, indicating that a high efficiency recovery of silicon from PSKL was achieved. Compared to the existing PSKL deoxidation technologies, e.g., the high temperature process and the hydrofluoric acid leaching method, this method requires a relatively lower temperature and the waste acid can be easily recovered. Additionally, by taking into accounts the fact that the MgCl2 in leaching liquor can be recycled for cyclic utilization with a molten salt electrolysis method, it should be suggested that an efficient and environmental friendly process for PSKL recycling was obtained, which shows good prospects for commercial application.

A Simple and Effective Visual Fluorescent Sensing Paper-Based Chip for the Ultrasensitive Detection of Mercury Ions in Environmental Water.

Traces of mercury ions in environmental water can harm humans and animals. Paper-based visual detection methods have been widely developed for the rapid detection of mercury ions; however, existing methods are not sensitive enough to be used in real environments. Here, we developed a novel, simple and effective visual fluorescent sensing paper-based chip for the ultrasensitive detection of mercury ions in environmental water. CdTe-quantum-dots-modified silica nanospheres were firmly absorbed by and anchored to the fiber interspaces on the paper's surface to effectively avoid the unevenness caused by liquid evaporation. The fluorescence of quantum dots emitted at 525 nm can be selectively and efficiently quenched with mercury ions, and the ultrasensitive visual fluorescence sensing results attained using this principle can be captured using a smartphone camera. This method has a detection limit of 2.83 µg/L and a fast response time (90 s). We successfully achieved the trace spiking detection of seawater (from three regions), lake water, river water and tap water with recoveries in the range of 96.8-105.4% using this method. This method is effective, low-cost, user-friendly and has good prospects for commercial application. Additionally, the work is expected to be utilized in the automated big data collection of large numbers of environmental samples.

Utilization of phosphogypsum to synthesize α-hemihydrate gypsum in H3PO4–H2O solution

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a kind of industrial solid waste with high impurity content and low utilization rate. In this study, α-hemihydrate gypsum (α-HH) was synthesized from PG in H3PO4–H2O solution (wet-process phosphoric acid solution and phosphoric acid solution) under atmospheric pressure. The crystal morphology of α-HH was controlled by adding F and Al compound regulators, and the mechanical properties of α-HH were improved. The difference of α-HH synthesized by PG with different qualities was analyzed, and the mechanism of α-HH morphology was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results showed that in the wet-process phosphoric acid solution, α-HH synthesized from white PG (by H3PO4–H2SO4 two-step method) had better whiteness, purity, and mechanical properties compared with that from industrial PG, and the performance indexes of the α-HH products met the requirements of α50 grade in JC/T 2038–2010 α-high-strength gypsum in China and have a good commercial application prospect. Moreover, in the phosphoric acid solution, the average diameter of the α-HH crystal increased from 8.1 µm to 54.8 µm, the average aspect (L/D) ratio decreased from 32.65 to 0.52, and the induction period and growth period of the α-HH crystal were prolonged with the increase in regulator dosage. F− and Al3+ ions were preferred to adsorb on the crystal faces. The growth of the crystal parallel to c-axis (200), (020), and (400) was inhibited, and the morphology of the α-HH crystal changed from whisker to short column. When the dosage of the regulator was 1.1 %, the 2 h bending strength of the α-HH product was 6.56 MPa, and the drying compressive strength was 52.4 MPa. This study provides a new technique and method for the synthesis of high-strength α-HH products from PG.

CuNi Alloy NPs Anchored on Electrospun PVDF-HFP NFs Catalyst for H2 Production from Sodium Borohydride.

Non-noble CuxNi1-x (x = 0, 0.1, 0,2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1) alloy nanoparticles supported on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofibers (NFs) are successfully fabricated. The fabrication process is executed through an electrospinning technique and in situ reduction in Cu2+ and Ni2+ salts. The as-synthesized catalysts are characterized using standard physiochemical techniques. They demonstrate the formation of bimetallic NiCu alloy supported on PVDF-HFP. The introduced bimetals show better catalytic activity for sodium borohydride (SBH) hydrolysis to produce H2, as compared to monometallic counterparts. The Cu0.7 Ni0.3/PVDF-HFP catalyst possesses the best catalytic performance in SBH hydrolysis as compared to the others bimetallic formulations. The kinetics studies indicate that the reaction is zero order and first order with respect to SBH concentration and catalyst amount, respectively. Furthermore, low activation energy (Ea = 27.81 kJ/mol) for the hydrolysis process of SBH solution is obtained. The excellent catalytic activity is regarded as the synergistic effects between Ni and Cu resulting from geometric effects over electronic effects and uniform distribution of bimetallic NPs. Furthermore, the catalyst displays a satisfying stability for five cycles for SBH hydrolysis. The activity has retained 93% from the initial activity. The introduced catalyst has broad prospects for commercial applications because of easy fabrication and lability.

Fabrication of the high efficient novel SiC foam based 3D metal oxide anodes with long life to improve electrocatalytic oxidation performance

The SiC foam is a promising electrode substrate material because of its huge specific surface area and low price. The novel three dimensions (3D)-PbO2 and 3D-SnO2-Sb anodes using SiC foam as a substrate were first prepared to reduce the energy consumption of wastewater electrochemical oxidation treatment. The results of the electrochemical degradation of alizarin red S (ARS) in a flow-through reactor depicted that the ARS and chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation rate constants of 60 pores per inch (PPI)-SiC/SnO2-Sb anode are 8 and 1.82 times that of the costly BDD electrode. For 60 PPI-SiC/SnO2-Sb/PbO2 anode, it is 10.12 and 1.35 times higher. The 3D-SiC/SnO2-Sb anode has a 142–218 times longer lifetime than that of the flat-Ti/SnO2-Sb electrode. Its lifetime is also obviously longer than that of the SnO2 electrode with the addition of an intermediate layer or advanced materials modified in the reported literature. A new failure mechanism of the 3D-SiC-based electrodes is elaborated which is different from the Ti-based electrodes. An accurate fluid model is constructed based on the micro-CT and CFD simulation to study the enhancement mechanism of the flow field. The results show that the turbulent kinetic energy and vorticity of the reactor are 3–6 times higher than that with 2D electrodes. The residence time distribution shows that the flow field of the 3D electrode exhibits a more approximate plug flow with no dead zones. Due to their high performance and long life, 3D-SiC-based SnO2-Sb and PbO2 anodes have good prospects for commercial applications.

Construction of novel PG/GeP2 and PG/SiP2 vdW heterostructures for high-efficiency photocatalytic water splitting

The development and design of environmentally friendly, low-cost efficient visible-light-driven water splitting photocatalysts is a kind of the most promising methods to solve current energy shortage problems. Herein, the brand new penta-graphene/GeP2 (PG/GeP2) and PG/SiP2 van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are constructed. Their geometric structures, thermodynamic feasibilities, and optoelectronic properties for water splitting are systematically investigated through DFT calculation. The results show that the band-gap value and band-edge positions prove these heterostructures are promising candidates for water splitting. Meanwhile, The Gibbs free energy change proves that the water-splitting progress is spontaneous. Especially, PG/GeP2 has a type-II band alignment and an indirect bandgap of 2.63 eV, and the electrical properties of PG/GeP2 heterostructure under −2% strain are adjusted to better catalyze the water-splitting reaction, improve the light absorption characteristic and effective mass of carrier. The unique band alignment of these heterostructures photocatalysts leads to high solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiencies up to 10.8%, which has a good commercial application prospect. Therefore, these studies predict that PG/GeP2 vdW heterostructure is important candidates as photocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Qinglongyi/SA Composite Edible Antibacterial Preservative Film

To produce a composite edible antibacterial preservative film with active extracts of Qinglongyi. The addition of Qinglongyi ethanol extract, zein, and SA produced a composite edible antibacterial preservative film. Physical, mechanical, antibacterial, and fruit weight loss rates were tested to determine the best parameter combination. The findings revealed that under the conditions of 80 mg/mL Qinglongyi ethanol extract, 70% zein ethanol aqueous solution, and 45 °C drying temperature, the composite film reduced strawberry weight loss rate to 8.38% for five days, which was about 5% lower than the control group, while the WVP reached the lowest level at 0.47 (g ·mm·m−2·h−1·kPa−1), elongation was at the break of 199.92% compared with traditional PE preservative film (only around 40%), and an antibacterial effect on E. coli, S. aureus and Penicillium. The composite film had a good preservative effect, so the commercial application prospect is promising.
