Effect of Epoxy Macromolecules as Interfacial Mediators on the Microstructure and Physical Properties of Styrene Butadiene Rubber/ Talcum Powder Composites

Poly(isoprene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) epoxy macromolecules were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to act as interfacial mediators between talcum powder (Talc) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) with the aim of improving the properties of SBR/Talc composites. The epoxy macromolecules were uniformly dispersed on the surface of Talc using the spray-drying method. Subsequently, the modified Talc was utilized in the preparation of SBR composites. During hot vulcanization, isoprene double bonds could directly graft onto the rubber skeleton. Simultaneously, the epoxy groups opened the ring and formed covalent bonds with silanol. The interfacial covalent bonds were found to significantly enhance the dispersion of Talc and the interfacial interactions between SBR and Talc, as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy, cross-linking density measurements, and rubber processing analyzer tests. Differential scanning calorimetry results indicated that the number of interfacial covalent bonds and the content of glassy layers in the composites increased with the rise in GMA content and modified Talc. At equivalent filler loadings, epoxy macromolecules with 20 wt% and 34 wt% GMA increased the tensile strength by 31% and 49%, respectively. Concerning viscoelastic properties, composites containing interfacial covalent bonds exhibited superior stress relaxation and stress softening properties.

The influence of palm oil-derived plasticizers and lubricants on the rheological and mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber

Researchers have recently focused on green processing aids made from plants and vegetables to avoid the high concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from petroleum-based processing oils, which is hazardous to human health. This paper focuses on the effect of lubricants and plasticisers produced from palm oil on the rheological, mechanical and thermal aging properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). These lubricants and plasticisers are known as glycerol trioleate (GTO), n-butyl stearate (NBS), ethylene bis-steramide (EBS), ethylene bis-oleamide (EBO), pentaerythritol tetrastearate (PETS) and stearyl stearate. The abrasion performance, visual inspection appearance, and cure characteristics of the lubricants and plasticisers on SBR were examined and compared to processing oil-treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE), paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, polyethylene (PE) wax, epoxidised soybean oil (ESBO), and stearic acid. It discovered that rubber compounds based on GTO, stearic acid, and EBS exhibited better abrasion resistance and cure properties than rubber compounds based on processing oil. These samples were selected and subjected to mechanical properties, thermal aging effects analysis and comparison with processing oil. Tensile strength shows that SBR with EBS (22.49 MPa) and EBS with GTO (EBS/GTO; 21.25 MPa) are closely similar to SBR compounds with processing oil (21.02 MPa). The findings imply that EBS and EBS/GTO, green plasticisers and lubricants, are viable alternatives to petroleum-based processing oils while being cost-effective for tire production.

Effect of filler surface treatment on the physico-mechanical properties of filler/styrene-butadiene rubber nanocomposites

In the present work, the effects of various filler types and content on the characteristics and properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) were studied. This study prepared SBR filled with different fillers: kaolin, metakaolinite, synthetic zeolite Na-A, alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles, and hybrid filler (synthetic zeolite Na-A/Al2O3). The silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was employed to treat the surface with fillers. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to determine the surface morphology. The results demonstrated that fillers improved the physicomechanical properties. Tensile strength and elongation at break (%) in composites containing synthetic zeolite Na-A increased by up to 158.6% at 3 phr and 100% at 2 phr, respectively. The results showed that the surface properties displayed by SEM analysis indicated a good distribution of filler particles. Also, the rubber compound’s resistance to organic solvents such as toluene was improved, as evidenced by swelling properties; the swelling ratio decreased by 17.5% while the crosslink density increased by 42.6% at 5 phr Al2O3/synthetic zeolite Na-A. The constants of the various hyperelastic models that explain the behavior of the composite materials under study were determined, and their predictions of the experimentally obtained stress-strain curves were compared. The study’s experimental findings will be helpful for several industrial uses, including an extender in water-based paints, rubber fillers, ceramic materials, paper fillers, and coating pigments.

Enhanced Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Styrene Butadiene Rubber Nanocomposites with Graphene Platelet Nano-powder

Nanocomposites are very important materials because it imparts superior properties than other composites with low level of filler loading. Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is a non-polar rubber which acts as an insulator and has low electrical conductivity. Graphene platelet nano-powder from 0.1 to 1.25 phr level is incorporated into SBR rubber in order to improve the electrical properties. Comparative studies on electrical and mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber with graphene platelet nano-powder (GPN) by varying the filler content are made. The incorporation of Graphene platelet nano-powder increases the electrical conductivity in styrene butadiene rubber. It has been observed that there is a gradual increase in electrical conductivity by increasing the amount of nanofiller at higher frequency of about 100 kHz. The mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber are improved by the incorporation of Graphene platelet nano-powder. The effect of applied pressure and temperature on the volume resistivity and electrical conductivity of the composites is also investigated at a constant frequency of 100 kHz. The electrical properties of the SBR/GPN nanocomposites increases with increase in pressure and temperature up to a certain limit and then becomes constant.

Carbon black distribution driven by its concentration and its effect on physico‐mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber and butadiene rubber miscible rubber blends

AbstractThis paper discusses the influence of partitioning of carbon black (CB) with its increasing concentration (i.e., 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 phr) on physical and static mechanical properties of Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR)/Butadiene Rubber (BR) rubber–rubber blends (RRB's) in 70SBR:30BR blend ratio. Partitioning of CB towards BR in CB‐filled SBR/BR RRB's is quantitatively determined via dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). DMA confirmed increased partitioning of CB towards BR phase with increasing CB. DMA data on the partitioning of CB towards BR were in good agreement with nuclear magnetic spectra obtained by solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (SS‐NMR spectroscopy). Curing properties, relative density, hardness, tensile test, tear test, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on CB filled SBR/BR RRB's were carried out to determine the effect of increasing concentration of CB on physical, mechanical, and dispersion characteristics in comparison to neat SBR/BR RRB's.

Mechanical and magneto-mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene-rubber-based magnetorheological elastomers conferred by novel filler-polymer interactions

This study was undertaken to explore the mechanical and magneto-mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) based magnetorhelogical elastomers (MREs) reinforced with carbonyl iron particles (CIP) as a primary filler. Nanocarbon materials such as nano carbon black (NCB) and few layer graphene (FLG) were used as secondary fillers to reinforce the rubber matrix. The key purpose of this study is to demonstration how the mechanical and magneto-mechanical properties of MREs are related with filler-rubber interactions. CIP can reinforce rubber, although it contains micron size particles, and improvements in moduli and fracture toughness values indicate the formation of filler-rubber networks and interactions between the π-electrons of benzene and the d-orbital electrons of iron. Optimization of CIP filler loadings in SBR was performed using mechanical properties. Tensile strength and elongation at break were increased by increasing CIP loadings up to 15 vol%, and the addition of FLG at 2 vol% further improved mechanical and magneto-mechanical properties as compared with 17 vol% CIP in SBR-based MREs. The study shows that the addition of nano reinforcing filler and an optimum amount of magnetic filler enhances magnetic and mechanical properties, which would be useful for high-energy smart damping systems.

Fly Ash from Lignite Combustion as a Filler for Rubber Mixes. Part I: Physical Valorization of Fly Ash.

The potential use of fly ash (FA) originating from lignite combustion at the Belchatow Power Plant (Poland) as filler for rubber mixes was evaluated. Samples of fly ash collected from heaps created in different years were compared according to their chemical and phase composition, particle size distribution, and morphology. The sieve fractionation of fly ash results in size fractions of different chemical structures, phase compositions, and morphologies, reflected in changes to their specific surface area, surface energy, and activity in rubber mixes. Fractionation turned out to be more effective than grinding from the point of view of using ash as a filler for rubber mixes, because it results in higher specific surface area (SSA) and chemical composition differentiation. Carbon black can be replaced by up to 40% by weight with the fly ash fraction (FFA) of dimensions below 125 µm, without any significant deterioration in the mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) vulcanizates filled with 50 phr of active carbon black (N 220). Despite the larger fly ash fraction of grain dimensions in the range between 125 and 250 µm presenting the highest specific surface area, the particle size adversely affects its strengthening effect in rubber. Taking into account all the tests performed, ranging from morphology, Payne effect and bound rubber, to mechanical and abrasion tests, the highest potential effectivity is presented by a sample containing 30 phr of N 220 and 20 phr of FFA of grain sizes from 63 to 125 µm. The obtained results indicate that fractionation seems to be an effective physical method of fly ash valorization.

Recycling of Bagasse as an Agricultural Waste and its Effect as Filler on Some Mechanical and Physical Properties of SBR Composites

Abstract In the present study, a series of mixes based on different concentrations of carbon black (CB) as a reinforcing filler and sugarcane bagasse as supplementary filler, were investigated to examine their effects on the mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. To this end, the first group of mixes deals with the effect of different concentrations of CB ranging from 0 to 80 phr at fixed bagasse concentration of 25 phr. The second group of mixes involves the addition of bagasse with concentrations varying from 10 to 50 phr at 10 intervals with fixed CB concentration of 40 phr. The sizes of the employed ground bagasse powder (GBP) in all prepared formulations ranged from 20 to 180 μm. In addition, 2.5 phr of maleic anhydride (MA) was added to enhance the interfacial adhesion between SBR and agricultural waste fillers (i. e. bagasse). Tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus at 100% elongation, resilience, hardness (Shore A), abrasion and degree of swelling of the rubber vulcanizates were studied. The prepared samples were also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to show the distribution of fiber and the occurrence of fiber-matrix adhesion. The optimum concentration of bagasse to be used simultaneously with CB in SBR composites was found to be 30 phr. Overall, it was found from the obtained results that the addition of GBP up to 50 phr is feasible without impairing the mechanical properties of SBR vulcanizates.

Physical properties of nano Al2O3 reinforced NBR/SBR blends

This research carried out to enhance physical properties of Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)-Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) blends with nano alumina reinforcement. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) filler in different compositions were added to rubbers for modify properties such as hardness, tensile strength, tear strength, abrasion resistance and rebound resilience. Rubber blends with four different compositions 1phr, 3phr, 5phr and 7phr of Al2O3 were prepared and tested. Results were noted and plotted. Comparison done for each sample and the possible reasons for the behavior were discussed.

Rheological Properties Of (NR/SBR/CMC/C.B) Nanocomposites

This research focuses on the impact of adding materials such as carbon black and polymer of carboxyl methylcellulose on the the rheological properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and natural rubber (NR) which was studied as a matrix. The present study was a carried out by two groups according to the loading level of carboxyl methylcellulose (CMC) and carbon black(C.B) its molecular weight (N660) which their used as stiffeners in the composites. on the other side, rheometer tests carried according to ASTM D 2705 For the purpose use these composites in various tire making and fender ship. All composites are consisting of carbon black (C.B) N660 (0, 10, 10, 10, 10) pphr and carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) (0, 0, 10, 20, 30) pphr respectively for the first group (A) and (0, 20, 20, 20, 20) pphr for C.B, (0, 0, 10, 20, 30) pphr for CMC for the second group (B). The maximum torque, minimum torque, scorch time, viscosity and Tc90 optimum curing time were checked. The results revealed that the parameters differ according to the level of loading. Viscosity, lower torque, maximum torque and optimal curing were reduced for increasing loading ratio of the C.B and CMC. As well, an optimal curing time of the TC90 burning time was reduced as addition ratios of the carbon black (C.B) and carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) increased.

Effect of silicon nitride on physical properties of SBR

In this research paper, the effect of silicon nitride (Si3N4) on physical properties of Styrene Butadiene Rubber were studied. Tensile strength, cure time, tear strength and wear resistance were determined and compared for different compositions of silicon nitride on the rubber. The compositions of Si3N4 were 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% by weight. Samples were prepared and tested successfully. Required properties were determined from the test observations. The tensile, tear and wear properties of the rubber found to be improved in the composite form for many compositions.

Preparation and Investigation of the Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Styrene Butadiene Rubber using Dicumyl Peroxide as Curing Agent

This paper investigates the mechanical and thermal properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) using dicumyl peroxide as curing agent. The results showed that the tear strength of SBR with 2 phr DCP as curing agent increased sharply from 31,7 N/mm to 73,2 N/mm compared to SBR cured with sulfur. The other mechanical properties like tensile strength, elongation at break are unchanged. The accelerators DM/TMTD used by curing of SBR have not only influence on mechanical properties but also on the curing time. Using 0.5-phr trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (EM 331) also increases the thermal stability of SBR, thermal aging ratio reaches 0.79 from 0.66 comparing with sample without EM 331. Nano silica have good effec for thermal conductivity coefficient of SBR . At the nano silica content of 3% the thermal conductivity coefficient increases by more than 20.68%, from 0.672 W / m * K of SBR to 0.811 W / m * K of SBR/nano silica composite. This will probably have a good effect on properties of finished product when blending SBR rubber with other types of synthetic rubber which have different vulcanizing properties.

Enhancing the Properties of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber by Adding Borax Particles of Different Sizes

In this research study, borax particles with different average sizes (1.25, 0.75, 0.60 μ m) were added to a styrene-butadiene rubber compound for reinforcement. This rubber has low mechanical, thermal and surface properties, as well as a low resistance to organic solvents. A laboratory two-roll mill was used at room temperature to add the borax particles to the synthetic rubber, then the rheometer characteristics such as torque, scorch time and cure time were limited at a temperature of 150°C. The results showed that the torque and CRI (curing rate index) improved by 160% for torque and 600% for CRI respectively, dependent on reducing the particle size from 1.25 μm to 0.6 μm. The surface properties shown by FE-SEM, AFM images, and FTIR analysis indicated a good dispersion of borax particles with an absence of the aggregates when a low borax particle size of 0.6 μm was used. Furthermore, the properties of tensile strength, elongation at break, and the hardness of the rubber compound were improved by 220% for tensile strength, 37% for hardness, and the reduction in elongation at break improved by 25% depending on the reduction in particle size. On the other hand, the resistance of the rubber compound to flame improved, besides the improvement of the thermal conductivity with decreasing particle sizes. The resistance of the rubber compound to organic solvents, such as toluene, was also improved, which was represented by the properties of swelling, the percentage of swelling index, and the cross-link density with 1.07% for swelling index and 1.3×10-3 mole/cm3 for cross-link density.

Substantial reduction of carbon black and balancing the technical properties of styrene butadiene rubber compounds using nanoclay

Carbon black is the prime component used in tyre manufacturing. Normally, 40–60 phr of carbon black is added in rubbers to enhance their physico-mechanical properties. Utilisation of high amounts of carbon black during tyre manufacturing will certainly lead to more fly loss, which may create several health hazards to humans involved in the mixing operation. This research work aims to partially replace carbon black with minimal nanoclay and balance the technical properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds. Organically modified polar nanoclay namely, Cloisters 30B was used in this study. Compatibility between SBR and Cloisite 30B was enhanced by introducing carboxylated styrene butadiene rubber (XSBR) as compatibiliser. Compatibilised SBR nanocomposites were developed by means of a two-step mixing process, where the required quantity of Cloisite 30B was dispersed in XSBR through a solution mixing technique. Further, the dried XSBR-Cloisite 30B films were incorporated in the bulk SBR matrix along with carbon black and curing agents through a mechanical mixing technique. For comparison, carbon black filled SBR compounds and dual filler (carbon black and cloisite 30B) filled uncompatibilised SBR compounds were prepared directly via a mechanical mixing method. Cure characteristics, morphology, wear behaviour and mechanical properties were analysed for the prepared rubber compounds. Compatibilised styrene butadiene rubber nanocomposite containing a dual filler exhibited an increase in maximum torque, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, storage modulus and resistance to wear proving to be potential candidature for tyre applications. The obtained results confirmed that a minimal quantity of nanoclay (3.5 phr) and carbon black (20 phr) contributed to achieve desired technical properties of SBR compounds. In addition, it was observed that the addition of carbon black enhances the distribution of nanoclay bybreaking the nanoclay agglomerates in the SBR matrix, which indeed elevates the technical properties of the related compounds.

The durability of concrete has been studied ever since it was first used. Researchers have incorporated several materials to make concrete strong and durable. This research focuses on the infusion of styrene butadiene rubber polymer (SBR) as a partial replacement of cement and studies its effects on fresh and hardened properties of concrete. Samples were prepared using partial replacement of SBR in proportions of 0%, 5%, 10% and 20%. Results showed that the fresh density of concrete decreased with the addition of SBR whereas the trends of workability showed an increase with cement replacement. Compressive strength increased at lower percentage replacements however the flexural and tensile strength increased till 15% SBR addition after which it decreased. The total porosity in terms of water absorption decreased which makes SBR modified concrete feasible for concretes exposed to moist conditions and the decreased porosity would increase its durability against chloride induced corrosion.

Strength and Durability of Styrene Butadiene Latex Modified Concrete with Silica Fume

This paper discussed the properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) latex modified concrete. The latex modified concrete using SBR latex were prepared with various polymer-binderratios and tested for compressive strength, flexure strength, elastic modulus and rapid chloride penetration test. Latex contents were varied as 5, 10 and 15 percentages by mass of binder (cement and silica fume). The effect of the polymer-binder ratio on the properties of latex modified concrete was examined. It was concluded from the test results that the compressive strength and elastic modulus decrease with polymer binder ratio and flexural strength increasing with polymer binder ratio. Addition of latex reduces the chloride ion penetration due to latex film formation..

Some studies on the effect of bagasse concentration on the mechanical and physical properties of SBR composites

This work aims to avoid pollution of the environment resulting from ashes accumulated due to the burning of agricultural wastes. Also, it aims to reduce the cost without impairing the mechanical properties of rubber vulcanizates. For this reason, this work was carried out as a possible solution by incorporation of cellulose fibers derived from bagasse waste as reinforcing fillers in rubber composites. Besides, it aims at reporting an investigation on a series of mixtures based on natural ground bagasse powder (GBP) and carbon black (CB) as reinforcing fillers to study their effects on the mechanical and physical properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. The GBP obtained from the grinding machine has a selective grain size distribution ranging from about 20 µm to 180 µm. In addition, 2.5 phr of added maleic anhydride was used to improve the interfacial adhesion between SBR and agricultural waste fillers (i.e. bagasse). Tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus at 100% elongation, resilience and hardness (Shore A), degree of swelling, and thermal properties of the rubber vulcanizates were studied. The prepared samples were also analyzed by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscopy. The advantage of choosing the 25 phr bagasse concentration as a pivoting factor makes the road clearer to investigate that the optimum concentration of bagasse to be used simultaneously with CB in SBR composites is 30 phr. Furthermore, it was found from the obtained results that the addition of GBP up to 50 phr is possible without impairing the mechanical properties of SBR vulcanizates.

Mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber toughened graphene reinforced polystyrene

In this study, styrene butadiene rubber was used for toughened polystyre/graphene nanoplatelets (PS/GNP) nanocomposites. The objective of this research is to determine the effect of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) contents on the toughness of PS/GNP nanocomposites. In order to achieve the objectives of the research PS/GNP nanocomposites were prepared with various SBR content styrene butadiene rubber content, while the contents of GNP were fixed at 0.5 wt%. The PS/GNP/SBR nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending technique. Mechanical properties of SBR toughened PS/GNP nanocomposites showed a decrement of toughness and tensile strength with increasing content of SBR. SEM study shows that the rubber dispersed uniformly within the blends with polystyrene nanocomposites. SEM results show that the polystyrene mixed with graphene nanoplatelets (PS/GNP) had the smooth surface compare to samples have toughened with styrene butadiene rubber. The mechanical properties of PS/GNP nanocomposites with contain of 15 wt% of SBR shown the best of toughening effect.

Effect of Boron Carbide on Physical Properties of Styrene Butadiene Rubber

A research is carried out to develop a synthetic rubber reinforced with Silica and Boron carbide. Synthetic rubber used for this experiment is Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR). The major aim of this experiment is to evaluate the change in the physical properties of the rubber when boron carbide is added at different compositions with silica. Boron carbide is used as the filler in this experiment since it is one of the strongest components. The effect of the glycol activator Diethylene glycol (DEG) and the curing agent Dicumylperoxide (DCP) are also investigated in this article. The results from the experiment shows that there is an enhancement in the mechanical properties of the SBR when Boron carbide is added. The dynamic test results of the fabricated rubber compound reveal that the abrasion resistance, tear strength and the tensile strength shows better results, with an increase in filler amount. This study suggests that boron carbide filled SBR is very useful in industrial applications
