Sealing properties of some root filling materials evaluated with radioisotope.

Abstract— Penetration of a solution of 1131 was observed in vitro in the apical zone of root canals of human teeth filled with zinc oxide eugenol, Rickert's root sealer and Alpha canal paste. With thicker mixes generally less penetration using lateral condensation compared with the thick mix and single cone or fluid mix and lateral condensation.

An improved vacuum shaft seal

A description is given of a vacuum shaft seal designed for the transmission of both reciprocating and rotary motion into a vacuum system. The seal, which is bakeable to 200°C, incorporates the reliable and effective sealing properties of a grease-packed seal whilst enabling an uncontaminated portion of the shaft to pass into the vacuum chamber. Some performance figures are given.

Prevention of water loss through CAB plastic sediment core liners

Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) core liners lose water through pores in the plastic. A wax bath has been developed to coat liners with a microcrystalline wax to retard water loss. Sealing properties of this wax are compared with those of paraffin and a combination of aluminum foil and microcrystalline wax. Over a 50-day period uncoated liners lost water at an average rate of 21·1 × 10 −4 g/day/cm 2 of surface area, while liners coated with microcrystalline wax or with paraffin lost less than 3·3 × 10 −4 g/day/cm 2. Liners coated with foil and wax did not lose water during the test.
