Disrupted properties of functional brain networks in major depressive disorder during emotional face recognition: an EEG study via graph theory analysis.

Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormal brain networks in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in emotional processing. While any cognitive task consists of a series of stages, little is yet known about the topology of functional brain networks in MDD for these stages during emotional face recognition. To address this problem, electroencephalography (EEG)-based functional brain networks of MDD patients at different stages of facial information processing were investigated in this study. First, EEG signals were collected from 16 patients with MDD and 18 age-, gender-, and education-matched normal subjects when performing an emotional face recognition task. Second, the global field power (GFP) method was employed to divide group-averaged event-related potentials into different stages. Third, using the phase transfer entropy (PTE) approach, the brain networks of MDD patients and normal individuals were constructed for each stage in negative and positive face processing, respectively. Finally, we compared the topological properties of brain networks of each stage between the two groups using graph theory approaches. The results showed that the analyzed three stages of emotional face processing corresponded to specific neurophysiological phases, namely, visual perception, face recognition, and emotional decision-making. It was also demonstrated that depressed patients showed abnormally decreased characteristic path length at the visual perception stage of negative face recognition and normalized characteristic path length in the stage of emotional decision-making during positive face processing compared to healthy subjects. Furthermore, while both the MDD and normal groups' brain networks were found to exhibit small-world network characteristics, the brain network of patients with depression tended to be randomized. Moreover, for patients with MDD, the centro-parietal region may lose its status as a hub in the process of facial expression identification. Together, our findings suggested that altered emotional function in MDD patients might be associated with disruptions in the topological organization of functional brain networks during emotional face recognition, which further deepened our understanding of the emotion processing dysfunction underlying MDD.

Sex differences in alterations of brain functional network in tobacco use disorder.

Many studies have found sex differences in alterations of brain function in cigarette smoking adults from the perspective of functional activity or connectivity. However, no studies have systematically found different alteration patterns in brain functional topology of cigarette smoking men and women from three perspectives: nodal and network efficiency, and modular connections. Fifty-six tobacco use disorder (TUD) participants (25 women) and 66 non-TUD participants (28 women) underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. The whole-brain functional networks were constructed and a two-way analysis of covariance with false discovery rate correction (q < 0.05) were performed to investigate whether men and women TUD participants had different alterations in the topological features at global, modular and nodal levels. Compared to non-TUD participants, men but not women TUD participants showed significantly lower global efficiency (lower inter-modular connections between the visual and executive control, between the visual and subcortical modules did not pass the correction) and significantly lower nodal global efficiency in the right superior occipital gyrus, bilateral fusiform gyrus, the right pallidum, right putamen, the bilateral paracentral lobule, the postcentral gyrus, and lower nodal local efficiency in the left paracentral lobule. Men and women TUD participants have different topological properties of brain functional network, which may contribute to our understanding of neural mechanisms underlying sex differences in TUD. Compared to non-TUD participants, we found men but not women TUD participants with significantly lower network metrics at global, modular and nodal level, which could improve our understanding of neural mechanisms underlying sex differences in TUD and lay a solid foundation for future sex-based TUD prevention and treatment.

Topological data analysis suggests human brain network reconfiguration during the transition from resting state to cognitive load

BACKGROUND: Neural networks of the brain continually adapt to changing environmental demands. The network approach in neuroscience, which focuses on the analysis of structural and functional network characteristics related to cognitive functions, is a highly promising avenue for understanding the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying the adaptive dynamics of cognitive processes. AIM: We aimed to explore how the topological features of functional connectomes in the human brain are linked to different cognitive demands. The focus was on understanding the dynamic changes in brain networks during working memory tasks to identify network characteristics inherent to working memory. METHODS: We examined the topological characteristics of functional brain networks in the resting state and cognitive load provided by the execution of the Sternberg Item Recognition Paradigm based on electroencephalographic data. Electroencephalogram traces from 67 healthy adults were processed to estimate functional connectivity using the coherence method. We propose that the topological properties of functional networks in the human brain are distinct between cognitive load and resting state, with higher integration in the networks during cognitive load. RESULTS: The topological features of functional connectomes depend on the current state of cognitive processing and change with task-induced cognitive load variation. Moreover, functional connectivity during working memory tasks showed a faster emergence of homology group generators, supporting the idea of a relationship between the initial stages of working memory execution and an increase in faster network integration, with connector hubs playing a crucial role. CONCLUSION: Collected evidence suggest that cognitive states, particularly those related to working memory, are associated with distinct topological properties of functional brain networks, highlighting the importance of network dynamics in cognitive processing.

Neural Network Connectivity Following Opioid Dependence is Altered by a Common Genetic Variant in the µ-Opioid Receptor, OPRM1 A118G.

Opioid use disorder is a chronic, relapsing disease associated with persistent changes in brain plasticity. A common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the µ-opioid receptor gene, OPRM1 A118G, is associated with altered vulnerability to opioid addiction. Reconfiguration of neuronal connectivity may explain dependence risk in individuals with this SNP. Mice with the equivalent Oprm1 variant, A112G, demonstrate sex-specific alterations in the rewarding properties of morphine and heroin. To determine whether this SNP influences network-level changes in neuronal activity, we compared FOS expression in male and female mice that were opioid-naive or opioid-dependent. Network analyses identified significant differences between the AA and GG Oprm1 genotypes. Based on several graph theory metrics, including small-world analysis and degree centrality, we show that GG females in the opioid-dependent state exhibit distinct patterns of connectivity compared to other groups of the same genotype. Using a network control theory approach, we identified key cortical brain regions that drive the transition between opioid-naive and opioid-dependent brain states; however, these regions are less influential in GG females leading to sixfold higher average minimum energy needed to transition from the acute to the dependent state. In addition, we found that the opioid-dependent brain state is significantly less stable in GG females compared to other groups. Collectively, our findings demonstrate sex- and genotype-specific modifications in local, mesoscale, and global properties of functional brain networks following opioid exposure and provide a framework for identifying genotype differences in specific brain regions that play a role in opioid dependence.

Exploring static and dynamic functional brain networks in adolescent depression using a co-produced novel irritability paradigm

Background Irritability is a core symptom of depression in adolescence and a risk factor for emotion regulation problems. However, its neural correlates are not well understood. Existing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) research on irritability typically overlooks its social context. Methods Here, we pilot a novel naturalistic fMRI paradigm targeting the social nature of irritability that was co-produced with young people (N = 88) and apply it in an independent sample of youth (N = 29, mean age 18.9 years, 77% female) with self-reported low mood that were aged 16 to 20 years. Participants were also fluent English speakers, free from MRI contraindications, and did not report a diagnosis of a neurological or neurodevelopmental condition. Our aim was to investigate whether graph theoretic and dynamical properties of functional brain networks differed between a resting state scan and our irritability paradigm. We also examined whether these brain features were associated with depressive symptoms and trait irritability. Results Using Leading Eigenvector Dynamics Analysis (LEiDA), we found that the dynamic properties of brain networks comprising default-mode and fronto-parietal regions differed significantly during the irritability paradigm compared to the rest condition. While no gross static topological differences were found between these two conditions, we found that some dynamic and topological features of emotion-related brain networks were related to trait irritability and depressive symptoms in our sample. Conclusions Although the current findings are preliminary due to the pilot nature of this study, this work showcases the feasibility of co-produced research in neuroimaging and lays a strong foundation for further study.

QOL-04. CHANGES IN FUNCTIONAL CONNECTIVITY AFTER SURGERY ARE ASSOCIATED WITH DECLINE IN FUNCTIONAL INDEPENDENCE IN PATIENTS WITH ELOQUENT GLIOMA

Abstract It is unknown whether patient independence following resection of eloquent glioma is associated with postoperative functional connectomic changes. Fifteen patients with left perisylvian glioma underwent resting-state fMRI and neuropsychological evaluation before and about 1 month after resection. Functional independence was measured with the Physical Self-Maintenance Scale (PSMS) and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale (IADL). Manual dexterity testing (Grooved Pegboard; N = 13), neurologic motor exam (N = 12), and performance status (KPS; N = 14) were also obtained. Graph theoretical analysis was used to calculate functional brain network properties. Postoperative need for assistance in at least 1 activity on the IADL increased from baseline in 80% of patients, most commonly in Transportation (67%), followed by Shopping (60%), Financial Management (47%), Cooking (47%), Medication Management (33%), and Phone Use (33%). Overall need for assistance (Total IADL score) significantly increased postoperatively (Mdn change = 4, p = .006). Need for assistance on the PSMS only increased in 27% of patients, with rates less than 15% across all functions. Total PSMS scores did not differ pre- and postoperatively (Mdn change = 0). KPS scores worsened in 40% of patients. None had gross motor worsening, though fine manual dexterity declined in 7% for the left and 23% for the right hand. Increased connectomic properties were significantly associated (Spearman ρ) with greater need for assistance on the IADL [Local Efficiency: Total (.72), Shopping (.71), Cooking (.64), Financial Management (.64); Clustering Coefficient: Phone Use (.63); Betweenness Centrality: Phone Use (.63); all p &amp;lt; .01]. PSMS and IADL ratings were not associated with KPS, manual dexterity, pre/postoperative FLAIR volume, or extent of resection. This study demonstrated that increases in certain functional connectomic properties after surgery are associated with greater need for assistance in instrumental activities in the postoperative period. Connectivity increases have also been associated with poorer cognitive outcome in this population, though specific properties involved may differ.

Disrupted topologic efficiency of brain functional connectome in de novo Parkinson's disease with depression.

Growing evidence supports that depression in Parkinson's disease (PD) depends on disruptions in specific neural networks rather than regional dysfunction. According to the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, the study attempted to decipher the alterations in the topological properties of brain networks in de novo depression in PD (DPD). The study also explored the neural network basis for depressive symptoms in PD. We recruited 20 DPD, 37 non-depressed PD and 41 healthy controls (HC). The Graph theory and network-based statistical methods helped analyse the topological properties of brain functional networks and anomalous subnetworks across these groups. The relationship between altered properties and depression severity was also investigated. DPD revealed significantly reduced nodal efficiency in the left superior temporal gyrus. Additionally, DPD decreased five hubs, primarily located in the temporal-occipital cortex, and increased seven hubs, mainly distributed in the limbic cortico-basal ganglia circuit. The betweenness centrality of the left Medio Ventral Occipital Cortex was positively associated with depressive scores in DPD. In contrast to HC, DPD had a multi-connected subnetwork with significantly lower connectivity, primarily distributed in the visual, somatomotor, dorsal attention and default networks. Regional topological disruptions in the temporal-occipital region are critical in the DPD neurological mechanism. It might suggest a potential network biomarker among newly diagnosed DPD patients.

Nodal properties of the resting-state brain functional network in childhood and adolescence.

Changes in the topological properties of brain functional network nodes during childhood and adolescence can provide more detailed and intuitive information on the rules of brain development. This study aims to explore the characteristics of nodal attributes in child and adolescent brain functional networks and analyze the correlation between nodal attributes in different brain regions and age. Forty-two healthy volunteers aged 6-18 years who were right-handed primary and middle school students were recruited, and the subgroup analysis included children (6-12 years, n = 19) and adolescents (13-18 years, n = 23). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected using a 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner. The topological properties of the functional brain network were analyzed using graph theory. Compared with the children group, the degree centrality and nodal efficiency of multiple brain regions in the adolescent group were significantly increased, and the nodal shortest path was reduced (q<0.05, false discovery rate corrected). These brain regions were widely distributed in the whole brain and significantly correlated with age. Compared with the children group, reduced degree centralities were observed in the left dorsolateral fusiform gyrus, left rostral cuneus gyrus, and right medial superior occipital gyrus. The transmission efficiency of the brain's core network gradually increased, and the subnetwork function gradually improved in children and adolescents with age. The functional development of each brain area in the occipital visual cortex was uneven and there was functional differentiation within the occipital visual cortex.

Functional Brain Network Alterations in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus With Different Cognitive Function States: A Graph Theory Analysis Study.

The study aimed to investigate the characteristics of brain functional network disruption in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with different cognitive function states by using graph theory analysis and to explore their relationship with clinical data and neuropsychiatric scales. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 38 female SLE patients and 44 healthy controls. Based on Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores, SLE patients were divided into a high MoCA group (MoCA-H; MoCA score, ≥26) and a low MoCA group (MoCA-L; MoCA score, <26). The matrix of resting-state functional brain networks of subjects in the 3 groups was constructed by using the graph theory approach. The topological properties of the functional brain networks, including global and local metrics, in the 3 groups were calculated. The differences in the topological properties of networks between the 3 groups were compared. In addition, Spearman correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation between altered topological properties of brain networks and clinical indicators, as well as neuropsychiatric scales in SLE patients in the MoCA-L group. At the global level, in the sparsity threshold range of 0.10 to 0.34, the values of small-world properties were greater than 1 in all 3 groups, indicating that functional brain networks of both 3 groups had small-world properties. There were statistically significant differences in the characteristic path length, global, and local efficiency between 3 groups ( F = 3.825, P = 0.0260; F = 3.722, P = 0.0285; and F = 3.457, P = 0.0364, respectively). Systemic lupus erythematosus patients in the MoCA-L group showed increased characteristic path length ( t = 2.816, P = 0.00651), decreased global ( t = -2.729, P = 0.00826), and local efficiency ( t = -2.623, P = 0.0109) compared with healthy controls. No statistically significant differences in local metrics were found between the MoCA-H group and the healthy control, MoCA-L groups. At the local level, there was statistically significant difference in the node efficiency among the 3 groups ( P < 0.05 after Bonferroni correction). Compared with healthy controls, SLE patients in the MoCA-L group showed decreased node efficiency in left anterior cingulate paracingulate gyrus, bilateral putamen, bilateral pallidum, and left Heschl gyrus. No statistically significant differences in the local metrics were found between the MoCA-H, MoCA-L, and healthy control groups. Correlation analysis in SLE patients in the MoCA-L group showed that the characteristic path length was positively correlated with C4 levels ( r = 0.587, P = 0.007), the global and local efficiencies were negatively correlated with C4 levels ( r = -0.599, P = 0.005; r = -0.599, P = 0.005, respectively), and the node efficiency in the bilateral putamen was negatively correlated with C4 levels ( r = -0.611, P = 0.004; r = -0.570, P = 0.009). The node efficiency in the left pallidum was negatively correlated with disease duration ( r = -0.480, P = 0.032). The node efficiency in the left Heschl gyrus was negatively correlated with IgM levels ( r = -0.478, P = 0.033). No correlation was noted between other network metrics, clinical indicators, and neuropsychological scales. The topological properties of functional brain networks were disrupted in SLE patients with low MoCA scores, suggesting that altered topological properties of the brain networks were associated with cognitive function in SLE patients. Correlation between altered topological properties of the brain networks and clinical indicators was noted in SLE patients with low MoCA scores, suggesting that altered topological properties of brain networks in SLE patients may have clinical significance as imaging markers for monitoring disease changes in patients with SLE.

Characterizing Topological Properties of Brain Functional Networks Using Multi-Threshold Derivative for End-Stage Renal Disease with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) experience changes in both the structure and function of their brain networks. In the past, cognitive impairment was often classified based on connectivity features, which only reflected the characteristics of the binary brain network or weighted brain network. It exhibited limited interpretability and stability. This study aims to quantitatively characterize the topological properties of brain functional networks (BFNs) using multi-threshold derivative (MTD), and to establish a new classification framework for end-stage renal disease with mild cognitive impairment (ESRDaMCI). The dynamic BFNs (DBFNs) were constructed and binarized with multiple thresholds, and then their topological properties were extracted from each binary brain network. These properties were then quantified by calculating their derivative curves and expressing them as multi-threshold derivative (MTD) features. The classification results of MTD features were compared with several commonly used DBFN features, and the effectiveness of MTD features in the classification of ESRDaMCI was evaluated based on the classification performance test. The results indicated that the linear fusion of MTD features improved classification performance and outperformed individual MTD features. Its accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 85.98 ± 2.92%, 86.10 ± 4.11%, and 81.54 ± 4.27%, respectively. Finally, the feature weights of MTD were analyzed, and MTD-cc had the highest weight percentage of 28.32% in the fused features. The MTD features effectively supplemented traditional feature quantification by addressing the issue of indistinct classification differentiation. It improved the quantification of topological properties and provided more detailed features for diagnosing cognitive disorders.

Task Cortical Connectivity Reveals Different Network Reorganizations between Mild Stroke Patients with Cortical and Subcortical Lesions.

Accumulating efforts have been made to investigate cognitive impairment in stroke patients, but little has been focused on mild stroke. Research on the impact of mild stroke and different lesion locations on cognitive impairment is still limited. To investigate the underlying mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction in mild stroke at different lesion locations, electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded in three groups (40 patients with cortical stroke (CS), 40 patients with subcortical stroke (SS), and 40 healthy controls (HC)) during a visual oddball task. Power envelope connectivity (PEC) was constructed based on EEG source signals, followed by graph theory analysis to quantitatively assess functional brain network properties. A classification framework was further applied to explore the feasibility of PEC in the identification of mild stroke. The results showed worse behavioral performance in the patient groups, and PECs with significant differences among three groups showed complex distribution patterns in frequency bands and the cortex. In the delta band, the global efficiency was significantly higher in HC than in CS (p = 0.011), while local efficiency was significantly increased in SS than in CS (p = 0.038). In the beta band, the small-worldness was significantly increased in HC compared to CS (p = 0.004). Moreover, the satisfactory classification results (76.25% in HC vs. CS, and 80.00% in HC vs. SS) validate the potential of PECs as a biomarker in the detection of mild stroke. Our findings offer some new quantitative insights into the complex mechanisms of cognitive impairment in mild stroke at different lesion locations, which may facilitate post-stroke cognitive rehabilitation.

Brain network analysis reveals convergent and divergent aberrations between mild stroke patients with cortical and subcortical infarcts during cognitive task performing.

Although consistent evidence has revealed that cognitive impairment is a common sequela in patients with mild stroke, few studies have focused on it, nor the impact of lesion location on cognitive function. Evidence on the neural mechanisms underlying the effects of mild stroke and lesion location on cognitive function is limited. This prompted us to conduct a comprehensive and quantitative study of functional brain network properties in mild stroke patients with different lesion locations. Specifically, an empirical approach was introduced in the present work to explore the impact of mild stroke-induced cognitive alterations on functional brain network reorganization during cognitive tasks (i.e., visual and auditory oddball). Electroencephalogram functional connectivity was estimated from three groups (i.e., 40 patients with cortical infarctions, 48 patients with subcortical infarctions, and 50 healthy controls). Using graph theoretical analysis, we quantitatively investigated the topological reorganization of functional brain networks at both global and nodal levels. Results showed that both patient groups had significantly worse behavioral performance on both tasks, with significantly longer reaction times and reduced response accuracy. Furthermore, decreased global and local efficiency were found in both patient groups, indicating a mild stroke-related disruption in information processing efficiency that is independent of lesion location. Regarding the nodal level, both divergent and convergent node strength distribution patterns were revealed between both patient groups, implying that mild stroke with different lesion locations would lead to complex regional alterations during visual and auditory information processing, while certain robust cognitive processes were independent of lesion location. These findings provide some of the first quantitative insights into the complex neural mechanisms of mild stroke-induced cognitive impairment and extend our understanding of underlying alterations in cognition-related brain networks induced by different lesion locations, which may help to promote post-stroke management and rehabilitation.

Altered topological properties of functional brain networks in patients with first episode, late-life depression before and after antidepressant treatment.

To preliminarily explore the functional activity and information integration of the brains under resting state based on graph theory in patients with first-episode, late-life depression (LLD) before and after antidepressant treatment. A total of 50 patients with first-episode LLD and 40 non-depressed controls (NCs) were recruited for the present research. Participants underwent the RBANS test, the 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-17) test, and resting-state functional MRI scans (rs-fMRI). The RBANS test consists of 12 sub-tests that contribute to a total score and index scores across the five domains: immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention, and delayed memory. Escitalopram or sertraline was adopted for treating depression, and the dosage of the drug was adjusted by the experienced psychiatrists. Of the 50 LLD patients, 27 cases who completed 6-month follow-ups and 27 NCs matched with age, sex, and education level were included for the final statistical analysis. There were significant differences in RBANS total score, immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention, and delayed memory between LLD baseline group and NCs group (P < 0.05). Considering the global attribute indicators, the clustering coefficient of global indicators was lower in the LLD baseline group than in the NCs group, and the small-world attribute of functional brain networks existed in all three groups. The degree centrality and node efficiency of some brains were lower in the LLD baseline group than in the NCs group. After 6 months of antidepressant therapy, the scores of HAMD-17, immediate memory, language, and delayed memory in the LLD follow-up group were higher than those in the LLD baseline group. Compared with the LLD baseline group, the degree centrality and node efficiency of some brains in the cognitive control network were decreased in the LLD follow-up group. The ability to integrate and divide labor of functional brain networks declines in LLD patients and linked with the depression severity. After the relief of depressive symptoms, the small-world attribute of functional brain networks in LLD patients persists. However, the information transmission efficiency and centrality of some brain regions continue to decline over time, perhaps related to their progressive cognitive impairment.

Assessing Functional Brain Network Dynamics in Dyslexia from fNIRS Data.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by a deficit of phonological awareness whose origin is related to atypical neural processing of speech streams. This can lead to differences in the neural networks that encode audio information for dyslexics. In this work, we investigate whether such differences exist using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and complex network analysis. We have explored functional brain networks derived from low-level auditory processing of nonspeech stimuli related to speech units such as stress, syllables or phonemes of skilled and dyslexic seven-year-old readers. A complex network analysis was performed to examine the properties of functional brain networks and their temporal evolution. We characterized aspects of brain connectivity such as functional segregation, functional integration or small-worldness. These properties are used as features to extract differential patterns in controls and dyslexic subjects. The results corroborate the presence of discrepancies in the topological organizations of functional brain networks and their dynamics that differentiate between control and dyslexic subjects, reaching an Area Under ROC Curve (AUC) up to 0.89 in classification experiments.

Functional brain network properties of healthy full-term newborns quantified by scalp and source-reconstructed EEG

ObjectiveIdentifying the functional brain network properties of term low-risk newborns using high-density EEG (HD-EEG) and comparing these properties with those of established functional magnetic resonance image (fMRI) – based networks. MethodsHD-EEG was collected from 113 low-risk term newborns before delivery hospital discharge and within 72 hours of birth. Functional brain networks were reconstructed using coherence at the scalp and source levels in delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. These networks were characterized for the global and local network architecture. ResultsSource-level networks in all the frequency bands identified the presence of the efficient small world (small-world propensity (SWP) > 0.6) architecture with four distinct modules linked by hub regions and rich-club (coefficient > 1) topology. The modular regions included primary, association, limbic, paralimbic, and subcortical regions, which have been demonstrated in fMRI studies. In contrast, scalp-level networks did not display consistent small world architecture (SWP < 0.6), and also identified only 2–3 modules in each frequency band.The modular regions of the scalp-network primarily included frontal and occipital regions. ConclusionsOur findings show that EEG sources in low-risk newborns corroborate fMRI-based connectivity results. SignificanceEEG source analysis characterizes functional connectivity at the bedside of low-risk newborn infants soon after birth.

Aberrant dynamic functional network connectivity in type 2 diabetes mellitus individuals

An increasing number of recent brain imaging studies are dedicated to understanding the neuro mechanism of cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) individuals. In contrast to efforts to date that are limited to static functional connectivity, here we investigate abnormal connectivity in T2DM individuals by characterizing the time-varying properties of brain functional networks. Using group independent component analysis (GICA), sliding-window analysis, and k-means clustering, we extracted thirty-one intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) and estimated four recurring brain states. We observed significant group differences in fraction time (FT) and mean dwell time (MDT), and significant negative correlation between the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores and FT/MDT. We found that in the T2DM group the inter- and intra-network connectivity decreases and increases respectively for the default mode network (DMN) and task-positive network (TPN). We also found alteration in the precuneus network (PCUN) and enhanced connectivity between the salience network (SN) and the TPN. Our study provides evidence of alterations of large-scale resting networks in T2DM individuals and shed light on the fundamental mechanisms of neurocognitive deficits in T2DM.

Aberrant Topological Properties of Brain Functional Network in Children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Derived from Resting-State fMRI.

To examine the difference in the topological properties of brain functional network between the children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and healthy controls, and to explore the relationships between these properties and cognitive scores of OSA children. Twenty-four OSA children (6.5 ± 2.8years, 15 males) and 26 healthy controls (8.0 ± 2.9years, 11 males) underwent resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI), based on which brain functional networks were constructed. We compared the global and regional topological properties of the network between OSA children and healthy controls. Partial correlation analysis was performed between topological properties and cognitive scores across OSA children. When comparing the OSA children with the healthy controls, lower full-scale intelligent quotient (FIQ) and verbal intelligent quotient (VIQ) were observed. Additionally, nodal degree centrality decreased in the bilateral anterior cingulate and paracingulate gyrus, but increased in the right middle frontal gyrus, the left fusiform gyrus, and the left supramarginal gyrus. Nodal efficiency decreased in the right precentral gyrus, and the bilateral anterior cingulate and paracingulate gyrus, but increased in the left fusiform gyrus. Nodal betweenness centrality increased in the dorsolateral part of the right superior frontal gyrus, the left fusiform gyrus, and the left supramarginal gyrus. Further, the nodal degree centrality in the left supramarginal gyrus was positively correlated with FIQ. In contrast, none of global topological properties showed difference between those two groups. The outcomes of OSA may impaired the regional topological properties of the brain functional network of OSA children, which may be potential neural mechanism underlying the cognitive declines of these patients.

Abnormal static and dynamic functional network connectivity in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Many studies have explored the neural mechanisms of cognitive impairment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients using the functional MRI. However, the dynamic properties of brain functional networks are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the changes in dynamic functional network attributes and their relationship with cognitive impairment in stable COPD patients. The resting-state functional MRI and cognitive assessments were performed on 19 stable COPD patients and 19 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC). We conducted the independent component analysis (ICA) method on the resting-state fMRI data, and obtained seven resting-state networks (RSNs). After that, the static and dynamic functional network connectivity (sFNC and dFNC) were respectively constructed, and the differences of functional connectivity (FC) were compared between the COPD patients and the HC groups. In addition, the correlation between the dynamic functional network attributes and cognitive assessments was analyzed in COPD patients. Compared to HC, there were significant differences in sFNC among COPD patients between and within networks. COPD patients showed significantly longer mean dwell time and higher fractional windows in weaker connected State I than that in HC. Besides, in comparison to HC, COPD patients had more extensive abnormal FC in weaker connected State I and State IV, and less abnormal FC in stronger connected State II and State III, which were mainly located in the default mode network, executive control network, and visual network. In addition, the dFNC properties including mean dwell time and fractional windows, were significantly correlated with some essential clinical indicators such as FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and c-reactive protein (CRP) in COPD patients. These findings emphasized the differences in sFNC and dFNC of COPD patients, which provided a new perspective for understanding the cognitive neural mechanisms, and these indexes may serve as neuroimaging biomarkers of cognitive performance in COPD patients.

Diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease using EEG and fMRI

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with walking, balance, and coordination. Parkinson’s symptoms usually begin gradually and get worse over time. We have developed a framework to find solution for early diagnose of PD by investigating the topological properties of functional brain networks within fMRI and EEG Signals. After the construction partial correlation matrices of 160 regions from Dosenbach brain from fMRI image, six features were extracted. As well as extracted five features from EEG signals and these 11 inputs were given as input to adaboost classifier. This system has produced 93.45% accuracy and the outcome is significantly higher accuracy when compared to earlier works.

Study on the changes of Structural Covariance Network in post-traumatic stress disorder.

The topological properties of functional brain networks in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been thoroughly examined, whereas the topology of structural covariance networks has been researched much less. Based on graph theoretical approaches, we investigated the topological architecture of structural covariance networks among PTSD, trauma-exposed controls (TEC), and healthy controls (HC) by constructing covariance networks driven by inter-regional correlations of cortical thickness. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) scans and clinical scales were performed on 27 PTSD, 33 TEC, and 29 HC subjects. Group-level structural covariance networks were established using pearson correlations of cortical thickness between 68 brain areas, and the graph theory method was utilized to study the global and nodal properties. PTSD and HC subjects did not differ at the global level. When PTSD subjects were compared to TEC subjects, they had significantly higher clustering coefficient (p = .014) and local efficiency (p = .031). Nodes having different nodal centralities between groups did not pass the false-discovery rate correction at the node level. According to the structural brain network topological characteristics discovered in this study, PTSD manifests differently compared to the TEC group. In the PTSD group, the SCN keeps the small-world characteristics, but the degree of functional separation is enhanced. The TEC group's reduced small worldness and the tendency for brain network randomization could be signs of trauma recovery.
