Temperature and pressure dependence of the volumetric properties of binary liquid mixtures containing 1-propanol and dihaloalkanes

Densities of 1-propanol + dibromomethane, or +bromochloromethane, or +1,2-dichloroethane, or +1-bromo-2-chloroethane binary mixtures were measured at 288.15, 298.15 and 308.15 K, over the entire composition range. Thermal expansion coefficients, α, and excess molar volumes, , were calculated. Moreover, densities at 298.15 K and pressures up to 2 × 107 Pa were determined for the same mixtures. Isothermal compressibilities, κT, of the pure liquids and their mixtures were obtained.

Liquid Solution Densities of Ternary-Pseudobinary Mixtures of (Benzene + Cyclohexane) in the Presence of Tetrachloromethane or n-Hexane

Densities have been obtained as a function of composition for ternary-pseudobinary mixtures of [(benzene + tetrachloromethane or n-hexane) + (cyclohexane + tetrachloromethane or n-hexane)] at atmospheric pressure and the temperature 298.15 K, by means of a vibrating-tube densimeter. Excess molar volumes, VmE, partial molar volumes and excess partial molar volumes were calculated from the density data. The values of VmE have been correlated using the Redlich–Kister equation and the coefficients and standard errors were estimated. The experimental and calculated quantities are used to discuss the mixing behavior of the components. The results show that the third component, CCl4 or n-C6H14, have quite different influences on the volumetric properties of binary liquid mixtures of benzene with cyclohexane.

Density, Viscosity, and Excess Properties of Binary Liquid Mixtures of Propylene Carbonate with Polar and Nonpolar Solvents

The density and viscosity of binary liquid mixtures of propylene carbonate with polar and nonpolar solvents (acetone, chloroform, 1,4-dioxane benzene, toluene, and o-xylene) have been measured at 303.15 K. From density and viscosity data, the values of excess molar volume (VE) and deviations in viscosity (δη) have been determined. The excess molar volume and deviations in viscosity are negative over the entire range of composition. The density and viscosity data have been theoretically analyzed for the validity of different viscosity models.

Excess thermodynamic properties of binary liquid mixtures containing dimethylcarbonate and γ-butyrolactone

Thermodynamic data on liquid mixtures are usually expressed as excess quantities and analysed with the Redlich–Kister equation. Excess molar volume, excess viscosity, excess dielectric constant, and excess Gibbs energy of activation flow are calculated for γ-butyrolactone (BL) and dimethylcarbonate (DMC) mixtures at T=298.15 K and atmospheric pressure over the complete composition range. All these excess thermodynamics functions shows that DMC is less associated than BL and the interaction between pairs of like molecules is stronger than between pairs of unlike molecules.

Excess Thermodynamic Properties of Binary Liquid Mixtures Containing N , N -Dimethylacetamide with Some Alkan-1-Ols (C 1 -C 6 ) At 298.15 K

Excess molar enthalpies, $ H_m^E $ of N , N -dimethylacetamide + methanol, + ethanol, + propan-1-ol, + butan-1-ol, + pentan-1-ol, and + hexane-1-ol have been determined at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure using a Parr 1455 solution calorimeter. While the excess molar enthalpies are negative for methanol and ethanol mixtures, those for propan-1-ol, butan-1-o1, pentane-1-ol, and hexan-1-ol mixtures are positive over the entire range of composition of N , N -dimethylacetamide. The $ H_m^E $ at around x , 0.5 follow the order: methanol<ethanol<propan-1-ol<butan-1-ol<pentan-1-ol<hexan-1-ol. The results are explained in terms of the self-association exhibited by the alkan-1-ols and the formation of aggregates between unlike molecules through OHO hydrogen bonding. The experimental results for mixtures are well represented by the Redlich - Kister equation.

Thermophysical properties of binary liquid mixtures of polyether and n-alkane at 298.15 and 323.15 K: heat of mixing, heat capacity, viscosity, density and thermal conductivity

An apparatus for a rapid and simultaneous determination of the thermophysical properties excess enthalpy, isobaric heat capacity, kinematic viscosity, density and thermal conductivity has been developed. The experimental setup is subject of this paper. At 298.15 and 323.15 K, the systems ethylene glycol dimethyl ether– n-dodecane, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether– n-dodecane, triethylene glycol dimethyl ether– n-dodecane, tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether– n-dodecane and diethylene glycol dibutyl ether– n-dodecane have been investigated. The experimental results are correlated and the macroscopic properties are interpreted.

Pressão interna, volume livre, refração molar e propriedades termodinâmicas de excesso de misturas líquidas binárias de dimetil sulfóxido + tiofeno e dimetil sulfóxido + piridina a 298.15K foram calculadas a partir de medidas experimentais de densidades, tensão superficial e índice de refração. A relação entre a pressão interna, volume molar de excesso, refração molar, e a interação molecular dos sistemas binários é examinada.

Dynamical Properties of Liquid Binary Alloys: A Memory Function Study

Abstract The dynamical properties of binary liquid mixtures are investigated within a viscoelastic model using the memory function approach. Extending the viscoelastic model to the binary case we find that the dynamical properties of the liquid mixture are characterized by four propagating and two diffusive modes. We show that the character of the two propagating modes depends strongly on the relative concentration of the light and heavy atoms, in close analogy to the vibrational eigenmodes in substitutionally disordered crystalline and glassy mixtures. The relation of these two eigenmodes to the “fast sound” phenomenon observed in mixtures with strongly different masses is discussed.

Excess thermodynamic properties of binary liquid mixtures containing dimethylsulfoxide at 30�C

The exess volumes of mixing of dimethylsulfoxide with n-, sec- and tertbutylamine, n-pentylamine, n-hexylamine, n-heptylamine, n-octylamine and cyclohexylamine have been measured as a function of composition at 30°C by a dilatometric method. For all amines VE values are negative over the entire mole fraction range. The results are attributed to the interaction between unlike molecules.

Bulk and interfacial wetting properties of binary liquid mixtures.

We classify the interfacial wetting behavior of binary liquid mixtures at their liquid-vapor interface. The criteria with respect to the atomic interactions between the two species are whether the Hamaker constant of that interface fulfills either sufficient conditions for the absence of a wetting transition, or the necessary conditions for critical wetting, or the necessary conditions either for being wet already at low temperatures or for undergoing a first-order wetting transition upon approaching the critical end point along the triple line. Based on the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model and on the Percus-Yevick theory we scan the parameter space that determines the structure of the bulk phase diagrams. By analyzing the absolute values of the Hamaker constant we pay particular attention to interfacial wetting induced by tricritical points. In addition, we compare the predictions of the Percus-Yevick theory for the bulk phase diagrams and the number densities of the fluid bulk phases with experimental and simulation data as well as with different theoretical approaches.

Ultrasonic velocity, excess adiabatic compressibility, apparent molar volume, and apparent molar compressibility properties of binary liquid mixtures containing 2-butoxyethanol

Ultrasonic velocity and density data of binary systems of water–2-butoxyethanol (BE), 2-butoxyethanol-benzene, and 2-butoxyethanol–decane are reported for temperatures of 25, 40, and 55 °C. Adiabatic compressibility coefficients, apparent molar volumes, and apparent molar compressibilities were calculated from these data. Excess adiabatic compressibility properties were evaluated using volume fraction weighting of the individual component properties to estimate ideal mixture behavior. These results are compared with the data obtained based on the use of mole fraction weighting of the individual component properties for the ideal behavior value. A sharp ultrasonic velocity maximum and compressibility minimum is observed at low BE concentration in mixtures of water–BE at all temperatures. These maxima in ultrasonic velocity and minima in adiabatic compressibility are attributed to the formation of "clathrate-like" structures of water and alcohol. A shift of the velocity maximum towards lower concentrations of BE was observed with increase of temperature. A minimum in the ultrasonic velocity and a maximum in adiabatic compressibility coefficient values are observed in systems of BE–benzene and BE–decane. These results are discussed in terms of the breakdown of associated alcohol structures and the interstitial location of hydrocarbon molecules in alcohol aggregates.

An analytic model for the excess properties of binary liquid mixtures

A model has been devised to analyse excess property data for binary liquid mixtures. The model embodies the concept of the segmentation of the total composition range into three distinct regions. Results are given for the analyses of Δ V , Δ H and Δν for the acetonitrile-water and dimethylsulfoxide-water systems.

Two-fluid theory and thermodynamic properties of liquid mixtures: General theory

The two-fluid theory of binary mixtures postulates that the extensive thermodynamic properties of a binary mixture may be expressed by the contributions of two hypothetical fluids that mix ideally. This postulate, coupled with an expression for the partition function of the hypothetical fluid, permits evaluation of the properties of binary liquid mixtures by using only two adjustable binary parameters. Particular attention is given to the problem of nonrandomness in mixtures. A quantitative description of nonrandomness is achieved by combining the two-fluid concept with a hypothesis for ensemble averaging of a distribution of nearest-neighbor pairs.

V E is positive over the whole range of composition for the mixtures of 1-chlorobutane with 1-propanol and 1-butanol. An inversion in the sign of V E is observed over certain ranges of concentration of the halogenated alkane in the remaining four mixtures. The results are explained in terms of depolymerisation of hydrogen-bonded alcohol aggregates, decrease in dipolar association, and weak hydrogen-bonding interaction of the type Cl- - - HO between unlike molecules.

Excess thermodynamic properties of binary liquid mixtures containing cyclohexylamine at 30�C

The excess volumes of mixing of cyclohexylamine with n-hexane, n-heptene, n-octane, n-nonane, benzene, toluene, nitrobenzene, chlorobenzene and bromobenzene have been measured at 30°C. For all systems except for n-hexane, V E is positive over the entire mole fraction range. For the n-hexane mixtures, a sigmoid curve is obtained with negative V E at high mole fraction of amine.

An LKB flow microcalorimeter has been used to measure excess enthalpies at 298.15 K for mixtures of tetrachloroethene with methylbenzene, isomeric dimethylbenzenes, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, tert.-butylbenzene, and hexylbenzene. The results are compared with the excess enthalpies (Part I) at 298.15 K for mixtures of tetrachloromethane with the same set of second components. It is suggested that tetrachloroethene, like tetrachloromethane, acts as an electron acceptor towards aromatic hydrocarbons.
