MODERN FUNCTIONALISM AND THE RADICALLY ORDINARY: TOWARDS A REINTERPRETATION OF ARCHITECTS EDUCATED IN THE 1930s AND 1940s

This paper draws in part from interviews being conducted by the author in a project entitled the Architects of the Middle Third 1 as part of a larger study re-examining the theory and ideology of Australian architects from the 30s to the 60s. To date twenty five interviews have been completed with New South Wales architects whose education and early practice took place during the 30s and 40s. The interviews cover both ordinary and celebrated architectural production throughout the middle third of the 20th century (hence the project's title) and illuminate the ideas that were finding favour, and those that were not, among these architects. Once completed, the results of the project are likely to reorientate the professional impact of and contemporaneous attitudes towards early modernism in Australia.

Taking a Bite out of CRISP

A vast array of information useful to the scientific community is readily available on the internet. Currently, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers user access to several large databases, some of which are pertinent to nurses interested in research, health policy formation, and identifying funded research projects. One such database, the Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects (CRISP), provides information on research grants funded by the NIH from 1972 to the present. Retrieval of scientific information for each project in CRISP is made available by project title, grant number, abstract, principal investigator, eight-digit CRISP Thesaurus terms, and key words. This article introduces the reader to CRISP and provides a set of succinct strategies for conducting comprehensive searches in the database.

Bibliography of Editions and Translations in Progress of Medieval Texts

SINCE its appearance last January, the Bibliography of Editions and Translations in Progress has shown signs of growth. Scholars from countries not represented in the last issue have now submitted entries, giving the list a more pronounced international character, while at the same time scholars at work on Arabic texts have contributed more actively. Requests for offprints indicate that a need has been met. For the future, all projects will be listed yearly until they are designated as completed or lapsed. However, first entries alone will carry the full information on a project; all subsequent entries, appearing in abbreviated form, will carry only the project title, information on progress made, and the year the first entry appeared. Scholars wishing to have their text work listed should write for a questionnaire to the Medieval Text Association, Baruch College of City University of New York, 17 Lexington Avenue, New York, N. Potato disease research projects in Canada and United States in 1972

Potato disease research projects in Canada and United States are arranged according to causal agent and objective. Names and addresses of investigators are given. Section I includes a list of diseases arranged according to the nature of the disease-causing agent. Each disease is given a reference number. In Section II an alphabetical listing of research projects is given under each disease. The names of investigators are listed opposite each project title along with a code reference to the mailing addresses given in Section III.

A Directory of Social Studies Projects

For several years, Professor Michaelis has been maintaining what has come to be regarded as practically the official listing of the major projects operating in the social studies cur riculum area. We appreciate his willingness to let us publish the latest draft of his directory. Granted a project's title is not an especially rich source of information about the project's activities or products. Nonetheless, the editor concluded that this list would, at the least, add somewhat to the reader's awareness of the variety of studies in progress. More than that, the list may suggest to schools possibilities for contact, now or in the future, with develop ments and developers.
