AGILE TEAM COMMUNICATION IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS: A SURVEY-BASED APPROACH

Agility is a concept that provides new opportunities for proper management of construction projects. Since little is known about role of communication in agile project management, focusing specifically on the concept of communication to improve agile project practices would be beneficial. Communication plays a central role in project team development and increasing relationship quality with stakeholders. This study aims to evaluate factors measuring agile communication addressed in existing literature using a questionnaire survey. To achieve the study objective, data were collected from civil engineers working in various construction projects. Then, relative importance index (RII) was used to analyze data gathered from the respondents. The findings indicate that the significant role of face-to-face communication to convey information and continuous interaction of the client in the project execution process were the most important indicators of agile project communication, respectively. The study findings are expected to aid improving the agile communication practices, and eventually contributing to the adoption of agile solutions for professionals in the construction industry.

NAVIGATING COMPLEXITIES: A REVIEW OF COMMUNICATION BARRIERS IN MULTINATIONAL ENERGY PROJECTS

This review paper examines the communication barriers encountered in multinational energy projects, focusing on the challenges posed by cultural differences, language barriers, and differing regulatory environments. It synthesizes existing literature on communication strategies and their effectiveness in complex project environments, providing a comprehensive overview of how project managers can overcome these barriers. The paper also discusses the role of cross-cultural training, language proficiency, and regulatory knowledge in improving communication and project outcomes. This paper will conduct a systematic review of existing research, case studies, and theoretical models related to communication in multinational project management. It will collate findings from various disciplines, including management science, communication studies, and international business, to propose integrated strategies for effective communication. Multinational energy projects, characterized by diverse stakeholders, geographically dispersed operations, and intricate regulatory environments, present a fertile ground for communication challenges. Language differences, cultural nuances, and varying communication norms often hinder seamless information exchange, impeding project progress and fostering misunderstandings. This review identifies several key barriers to effective communication in multinational energy projects. Firstly, linguistic diversity poses a significant hurdle, amplifying the risk of misinterpretation and miscommunication. Secondly, cultural disparities influence communication styles, decision-making processes, and conflict resolution mechanisms, necessitating cultural sensitivity and adaptability. Additionally, organizational hierarchies and power dynamics within project consortia can stifle open dialogue, hindering the flow of vital information across stakeholders. Moreover, technological barriers, such as inadequate infrastructure or incompatible communication platforms, further exacerbate communication challenges, particularly in remote or underdeveloped regions where many energy projects operate. Regulatory frameworks across different jurisdictions also introduce legal and compliance complexities, constraining information sharing and collaboration. The implications of these communication barriers extend beyond mere operational inefficiencies, impacting project outcomes, stakeholder relationships, and even the broader energy landscape. Delays, cost overruns, and quality issues resulting from communication breakdowns undermine project viability and investor confidence. Moreover, fractured relationships among stakeholders may lead to disputes, litigation, or reputational damage, tarnishing the industry's image and impeding future collaborations. Addressing communication barriers in multinational energy projects requires a holistic approach encompassing linguistic, cultural, organizational, technological, and regulatory dimensions. Embracing diversity, fostering inclusive communication practices, leveraging innovative technologies, and promoting cross-cultural understanding are essential strategies for navigating these complexities and fostering success in the dynamic realm of multinational energy ventures. Evaluating the impact of internet communication quality in human resource management on the productivity of construction projects

This research endeavors to examine the intricate relationship between human resource management and communication management in Iraqi construction projects, exploring their impact on project productivity. Beyond its primary objectives, the study aims to identify key challenges and limitations in implementing effective communication and human resource management practices in the Iraqi construction sector. Understanding these challenges provides valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers, informing strategies to overcome obstacles and enhance project productivity. The research methodology involves an initial survey using a main questionnaire, focusing on three key areas: internet communication in human resource management, the influence of internet quality on construction project management, and factors affecting work productivity. The sample size, determined using Morgan's Table, requires a minimum of 248 participants. The questionnaire is distributed to engineers, managers, and technicians, with the number of respondents meeting the required sample size. Data analysis utilizes the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), conducting Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) for each variable to identify underlying factors. A first-order confirmatory factor analysis is performed using the Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) program, creating a structural model incorporating three variables and their associated factors. Out of the initial 64 factors, 21 are included in the final model, refined based on modification indices (M.I) output to improve fit. Results indicate a significant positive effect (0.92) of internet communication quality on labor productivity, while the impact of labor resource management is relatively negligible (−0.07). The size effect of variables on human resource management is 0.05, suggesting a small but non-zero effect. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of internet communication quality in enhancing labor productivity in construction projects and emphasize the need for effective human resource management practices in the industry. This study contributes valuable insights for project managers and practitioners in construction sector.

Research Plan Entrepreneurial Logical Mapping: Production and Re-engineering of a Pragmatic, Fluid and Tantalizing Academic Research Plan: A Practical Example (Extract from My 2024-2029 Research Plan)

For the young, ambitious academics and upcoming Researchers placed at any tertiary institution of higher learning, or research organizations, this position paper (research plan) is a must read master piece. Mature researchers and potential candidatures in research are also invited to consume this information. I acknowledge that while it may not be 100% tantalizing, but it is 100% worth of going through. Completing the reading and mastering some key techniques will produce researchers who work smart, organize their research and independent in thinking. This plan is a real abstract of my comprehensive plan for period 2024 through 2029. The document is my strategic research plan projected for [2024 to 2029]. The plan provides a major and rigorous diagnosis regarding the opportunity to talk about my proposed research plan-covering [Entrepreneurship, Business leadership and Corporate governance, Human and business epistemology, Project Management, logistics and Business Communication plus general management areas] within the domain of Private and Public sector sectors. BIM Roles in Enhancing Building Performance in Construction Projects Through Communication Management Case Study: The Grand Egyptian Museum

In Egypt’s construction industry, achieving successful project performance is still a challenge, particularly in construction projects involving multiple stakeholders, where the requirements increase and different management approaches between the multi-stakeholders during project phases affect the communication process. However, the reliance on traditional methods of transmitting information and communicating between all parties results in many problems. Therefore, many software and technologies are developed to improve communication management and address the challenges of complying with the information that stakeholders require. BIM technology has emerged as a suitable platform for information exchange and visualization, which can aid in increasing the quality of information transfer and exchange to ease construction management and improve building performance. Thus, this research aims to improve building performance by improving communication management in construction projects using BIM. A qualitative research methodology is adopted to achieve the aim of this research. It is based on an analytical study of a literature review, a case study on a BIM project in Egypt and semi-structured interviews carried out in the Grand Egyptian Museum project. The research outcome lies in exploring the role of BIM to achieve the most possible benefits and raise the management performance of the communication process during construction.

Exploring BIM Implementation Challenges in Complex Renovation Projects: A Case Study of UBC’s BRDF Expansion

Renovation of existing buildings pose unique challenges to the projects, especially when facilities must remain operational during construction. Building Information Modeling (BIM) methods offer a potential solution by enhancing project management and coordination. Nevertheless, comprehensive case study research on BIM implementation challenges and benefits in renovation projects is lacking. This research addresses this gap through an ethnographic investigation of BIM implementation in a complex renovation project. The ethnographic methods involved direct observation of project meetings, active engagement in all project communications, and access to project data resources. Additionally, surveys and expert interviews with key decision-makers were conducted. The findings reveal how BIM implementation streamlined project management and improved communication, decision making, and output quality, despite limited prior BIM expertise among the major stakeholders. Challenges included a lack of BIM skills, absence of standardized practices, and unclear data management. Furthermore, valuable lessons were identified, including that the necessity of BIM requirements and proper procurement methods encompassing the entire project workflow, formalizing information exchange, preventing information fragmentation, facilitating model accessibility, and ensuring clarity in model detail and content are crucial for project success. This research sheds light on the potential of BIM in renovation projects and highlights key considerations for successful implementation.

Effectiveness of the forced usage of alternative digital platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic in project communication management

The COVID-19 pandemic social distancing forced a shift from Face-to-Face (F2F) to virtual work sessions, applying innovative digital tools. These tools have previously been neglected, mainly due to a conservative approach or prioritization. Consequently, their effectiveness was never tested in depth. While applying these innovative digital tools during the COVID-19 pandemic was clearly preferable to shutting down organizational activity, managers and workers recognized the advantages of these alternatives and tended to apply them in the post-COVID-19 period. However, in this post-pandemic period, which is free from social distancing limitations, a relatively full space of choices was introduced again, which raised the question whether these alternatives should be kept. Therefore, this study examines whether digital communication tools can adequately substitute F2F sessions in project management. We conducted an experiment with participants (n=269),askingthem to perform project-oriented tasks on four platforms: as individuals, in an F2F group meeting, on Zoom, or using WhatsApp. The results indicate that while an F2F meeting is more effective than individual work, Zoom and WhatsApp are not. These findings appear surprising and may contradict the concept of group empowerment. The use of digital sharing platforms did not affect the tasks’ performances nor create synergy. This raises the issue of whether these digital means are here to stay, should be discarded, or must be upgraded.

The possibilities of modern online tools and approaches used for project management and effective communication connected to remote work

This article analyzes the most popular and widely used approaches to project management, both remote and non-remote, presented today on the world market, such as Agile, Kanban, Scrum, Scrumban and Waterfall, as well as the concept of “task manager”, the possibilities and functionality of such online platforms. Such tools and approaches can significantly improve the efficiency of communication when working remotely, especially when working with geographically distributed teams, including those performing tasks at the same time in different time zones. The purpose of the article is to analyze the key tools and approaches that are used to manage remote projects and geographically distributed teams and improve their business communication.

The role of communication in project management: validation of a communication management model for project management

Planificar las comunicaciones, manejarlas y monitorearlas son los pasos recomendados para la gestión de las comunicaciones en la gestión de proyectos. Por ello Malluk [1], Odine [2] y Muszinska [3], entre otros, resaltan la necesidad de entender la gestión de proyectos y la comunicación organizacional desde una perspectiva holística para que los proyectos tengan un manejo orgánico y sean exitosos. A partir de esto, desde el 2020 se está trabajando en la Universidad Ean en una investigación que busca demostrar la importancia del rol de la comunicación en la gestión de proyectos, que garantice una integración holística y orgánica. Como resultado de esta investigación, en este artículo se presentará un modelo de comunicaciones para la gestión de proyectos en donde se ve la comunicación como constitutiva de los proyectos en lugar de ser un simple instrumento.

Project Communication Management in a Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMES) in a Construction Project

ABSTRACTMicro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have become Indonesia's most essential and strategically important national economic drivers. This research focuses on an MSME involved in a construction project in 2021. This research aims to shed light on the project communication management of an MSME organization, PT Nata Kota Nusantara, simply Natakota, a micro-scale enterprise based in Bogor. Natakota was engaged in a civil construction project in a remote site area at PT GDE (GDE) in Ciwidey, Bandung. GDE is a state-owned enterprise focusing on geothermal energy and power generation. Virtual ethnography, observation, and discourse analysis were performed to reveal the project communication management process within the organization. It was unveiled that Natakota used Google Spreadsheet as a form of free and open-source software (FOSS) as their primary communication tool during the project execution. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) explains that the actor is the prime entity that shapes, drives, and accelerates the communication process within the network. This research observed the communication and collaboration between employees on several Google Spreadsheet files. In a project execution phase, communication is essential to obtain a productive project. Project communication plays a central part in communicating information flow to execute that project successfully. The results of this research show that several features in Google Spreadsheet play as actors in the ANT framework, which shapes, drives, and accelerates the internal communication process in the organization. Additionally, it appears that Google Spreadsheet could offer a competitive low-cost option for MSMEs looking to manage internal communications effectively and efficiently.Keywords: collaboration, communication, MSMEs, organization, project

Analisa Implementasi Manajemen Proyek pada Pengembangan Karung Goni Menjadi Tas yang Bermanfaat

TasGon is a product made from jute sack waste which is then processed into a useful product. In this project the burlap sack is processed into a bag called TasGon. This TasGon has many benefits, namely it can reduce the waste of burlap sacks that are wasted everywhere. In this study the authors used qualitative and descriptive research methods. This research is continued by analyzing project management, namely Project Integration, Project Scope Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management, Project Quality Management, Project Human Resource Management, Project Communication Management, Project Risk Management, Project Procurement Management, Project Stakeholder Management. The results of this study indicate that TasGoni has many benefits that can be felt by many people. Therefore the project undertaken must be in accordance with the quality of the product produced.

Proposed Project Management Maturity: A Study Case of Incinerator Project Delivery in Indonesia

An Indonesian waste treatment plant manufacturer company experienced several issues related to delivery project of the product Incinerator. The issues occurred mainly resulted in the project delay and cost overruns, which potentially impacted negatively to the project success. A company performance of running project can be measured in the form of Project Management Maturity analysis, it is can be interpreted as an organization’s capability to manage projects successfully utilizing a standardized practice that has been improved and enhanced through time. The objectives of this research are to identify the root causes of the business issue, assessing the project management maturity of the company, formulate the proposed solutions, and developing the implementation plan. The assessment of the maturity level is done based on the PMBOK project management knowledge area that relevant to the business issue, namely Project Risk Management, Project Schedule Management, Project Resource Management, and Project Communications Management. The data analysis of this research involves gap analysis and root cause analysis. An analysis that related to the gaps between the existing condition and the next maturity level is conducted to identify the areas of improvement the company need to address. Furthermore, the root cause analysis is conducted to determine the root causes of the business issues. The result of the data analysis is then utilized to formulate the proposed solution for improvement and the implementation plan. The proposed solutions in this research are to develop a proper risk management practices and documentation, implement scope management, development of project scheduling, and improvement of project team management regarding the development of resource management and communications management.

Improving the Performance of Construction Project Information and Communication Management Using Web-Based Project Management Systems (WPMSs)

This paper presents a brief study undertaken for improving the performance of information and communication management of construction projects through investing in information and communication technologies (ICT). The work aims at first to investigate and diagnose the problems, challenges, weaknesses, and inefficiencies related to information and communication management in projects in the construction industry of Iraq. Studying the diagnosed matters and the different solutions of ICT to improve project management performance is following the investigation process. The research presents a technological system suggested to process a lot of the diagnosed problems, challenges, weakness, and inefficiencies of the construction projects and to improve the current performance of project management and execution. The suggested system principles and fundamentals, benefits, features, classification and types, and the different solutions are described to ease and improve the process of development, adoption, and implementation of the system. The results show that the proposed system can improve the performance of the current state of project management through improving the processes of information and communication management.

EFEKTIFITAS KOMUNIKASI PROYEK KONSTRUKSI SAAT PANDEMI DARI SUDUT PANDANG KONTRAKTOR

Project communication management is an effort to ensure timeliness, collection and distribution of information according to the times. The level of success of a project has to do with Critical Success Factor (CSF) and one of them is communication. 2020 was a year that changed people's lives around the world because of the COVID-19 pandemic and had an impact on the construction sector in Indonesia. The PUPR Ministry issued Ministerial Instruction No. 02/IN/M/2020 regarding the mechanism for carrying out construction in preventing the spread of COVID-19 in both the government, regional government, BUMN, and private sectors during a pandemic (Construction Bulletin, 2020). In this case the implementation of Work Form Home (WFH) in contractor companies is one of the efforts to minimize the spread of the virus and continue to run the wheels of the economy (Prasetyo, 2022). This study aims to determine whether or not there is an influence on the effectiveness of the communication coordination relationship due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the construction process and to analyze whether or not there is a difference in the effectiveness of the communication coordination relationship before the pandemic and during the pandemic from the contractor's point of view. The research was conducted by distributing questionnaires to contractor stakeholders. Research data processing was carried out using excel and SPSS software. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and comparative analysis.

FEATURES OF COMMUNICATION DURING PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION BASED ON THE PMI PMBOK STANDARD

In current conditions, the issue of reducing the potential negative impacts on project stakeholders, improving efficiency, and increasing satisfaction from participating in project work remains relevant in project communications management.
 The article aims to study the problems of defining and using the most effective communication channels in project stakeholder management. The theoretical and methodological basis of the work is a set of principles and methods of scientific research: the principle of systematization and theoretical generalization, methods of grouping and ranking.
 According to the goal, the task was set to substantiate the effectiveness of communication channels depending on the degree of remoteness of the project stakeholders. Based on the study, the concept of a project was clarified, which, according to the PMBOK Project Management Standard, is understood as a temporary activity aimed at creating a unique product, service, or result and is part of the value delivery system. The contextual factors of the internal and external environment of the organization, which influence the project's results, were studied. The basis for the analysis was the scientific works of domestic and foreign scientists on the mentioned issues, materials, and data from the official website of the Ukrainian Project Management Association.
 The theoretical and methodological basis of the work is a set of principles and methods of scientific research: the principle of systematization and theoretical generalization, methods of grouping and ranking. As a result of the study, the sphere of execution, "Stakeholders," which is one of the eight spheres of project implementation, was considered. The definition of communication as a vital part of the value supply system by the sphere of execution of the "Stakeholders" project was recorded, and the dependence of the effectiveness of communication methods on the used communication channels was determined according to the model of the effectiveness of communication channels by Alistair Cockburn. It has been proven that applying this model can have a beneficial effect on increasing communication effectiveness during project implementation. A matrix of the effectiveness of communication channels was built, which details the consequences of stakeholder communication methods depending on their remoteness.

The Effect of Project Communications Management on Project Time Performance

The construction industry plays a significant role in the country, while project delays cause various problems. Regarding that, communication is very influential on the project performance, especially time performance. This study aims to identify the factors that affect project communications, identify the effect of project communications management on project time performance, and analyze project communications management strategies for improving time performance. The calculation of the Relative Importance Index was carried out to determine the factors that affect project communications. Meanwhile, a simple linear regression analysis was carried out to find out the magnitude of the effect of project communications management on project time performance. The project communications management strategy was obtained by mapping stakeholders using the power/interest grid method. The data was collected based on observations and the results of questionnaires filled out by 38 respondents, consisting of the owner, supervisor consultant, and contractor on the design-build project used as a case study. The results showed the top 10 factors influencing project communications with the highest Relative Importance Index value. The simple linear regression analysis result showed that project communications management has a positive and significant effect on project time performance with a coefficient of determination value of 69.6%. The suggested project communications management strategy is to optimize the application of the main factors of project communications, tailored to the result of the power/interest grid for each project stakeholder.

Using GQIM Model and Gompertz Model to Measure, Analyze, and Optimize the Whole Process of Software Project

This paper proposes a novel concept of using defect management technology to measure, predict, and optimize the management of the entire software project cycle. It first utilizes the software defect measurement GQIM model and prediction Gompertz model to track and quantify the defects of the entire project cycle. Then, the specific optimization strategy is proposed to manage the core processes of the project management, including project scope management, project time management, project quality management, project human resource management, project communication management, and project risk management. This study solves the quantification problems that are common in the current software project management process, such as complex testing procedures, high defect repair costs, and high communication costs. Furthermore, it contributes to promote the overall level of project management in the software industry. Taking the SDLM’s electronic banking software project management as an example, the various management quality indicators before and after the optimization of the project management process strongly indicate that using software defect management technology to optimize the software project management process is feasible and effective.

Sustainable Environment to Prevent Burnout and Attrition in Project Management

Project teams often fight to find a balance between the triple restrictions of money, scope, and schedule to deliver excellent products or services. The dual goal of realising benefits and satisfying the needs of stakeholders drives this conflict. It is possible that the climate and pace of the project will not be able to keep up with the increased demand for the deliverables, which will lead to burnout among project members and possibly attrition for the team. In this work, we analyse the factors that lead to project settings that are not sustainable and provide solutions to address the problem. The reading of 28 pieces of literature relating to project management in the information technology (IT), construction, energy, and health sectors is required to accomplish this goal. The results of the review are tabulated and mapped to the process groups and knowledge areas outlined in the 6th edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). This is done based on the Project Management Institute (PMI). According to the findings, increasing focus on the Project Resource Management knowledge area, which interacts with the Planning and Executing process groups, is necessary for the development of an environment that is environmentally sustainable. Plan resource management, develop teams, and manage teams are three processes that are included in these categories and fall under the category of being particularly significant. The next most important area of expertise is project communication management, which is followed by project schedule management.

Project Coordinators’ Perceptions according to the Organization Structure to Reduce Communication Risks in Multinational Project

Increasing risks about deficient communication and difficulties in communication management in multinational projects lead to the deployment of project coordinators (PCs). The role of coordinators and their responses to communication issues differ with the organization structure. This study focuses on the communication tendencies in different organization structures to facilitate the work of PCs. Based on the literature review, this study identified representative communication risks and organization structures in multinational projects. Thereafter, a survey and semi-structured interviews with 30 PCs were conducted to understand their perceptions, which were then analyzed by applying text-mining. Cultural and linguistic risks, such as differences in terminology, nuances, and visual gestures, occur frequently in communication. The resulting construction and design changes may lead to conflicts among stakeholders. To alleviate these risks, PCs in functional, projectized, and matrix organizations must consider the hierarchy, expert presence, and systematic approach adoption, respectively. PCs typically prefer matrix organizations, in which each department acts as a team to deliver information uniformly, and the personnel must adapt to differences in the terminology and behavioral cultures of multinational stakeholders. The systematic deployment of PCs with experience and knowledge of multinational projects in each team can help set unified goals among stakeholders. By coordinating the communication of PCs, the technology and resources of participating countries can be timely utilized.
