Non-profit and hybrid organizations as multi-sided platforms: insights from the analysis of sustainability models

PurposeThis study investigates the sustainability models of non-profit and hybrid organizations, which aim to balance economic, social and environmental objectives. The research introduces the Sustainability Model Canvas to analyze these organizations and identify common patterns, unique characteristics and managerial insights to balance the triple bottom line.Design/methodology/approachThe research utilizes the Sustainability Model Canvas to examine the sustainability models of 200 non-profit and hybrid organizations. Data were collected from secondary sources, including articles, reports and websites. The analysis was conducted using the activity system theoretical framework, which helped to identify design elements and themes within the business models of the studied organizations.FindingsThe study reveals four primary sustainability model patterns: donated income, earned income, public income and auto-generated income. An additional mixed approach pattern is identified, combining elements from the four primary patterns. The research highlights the parallels between these sustainability models and multi-sided platform business models, offering managerial suggestions for leveraging these patterns to achieve sustainability.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is based on secondary data, which may limit the depth of insights compared to primary data collection. At the same time, the chance to consider hybrid organization through multi-sided platform lenses provides relevant contributions to both the literature streams.Practical implicationsThe identified sustainability model patterns and managerial suggestions can serve as blueprints for non-profit and hybrid organizations aiming to design or innovate their sustainability models. The Sustainability Model Canvas offers a practical tool for organizations to visualize and balance their triple bottom line objectives.Social implicationsThe research underscores the importance of integrating social and environmental considerations into business models, promoting a holistic approach to sustainability that can lead to broader social and environmental benefits.Originality/valueThis research contributes to the business model literature by extending the focus beyond traditional profit-oriented organizations to include non-profit and hybrid organizations. The introduction of the Sustainability Model Canvas provides a new tool for designing and analyzing sustainability-oriented business models. The study also suggests considering sustainability models as multi-sided platforms, offering new insights for both academic and practical applications.

A Review of Predictors and Outcomes of Work Engagement in Nonprofit Organizations

The study proposes a conceptual model of antecedents and consequences of work engagement in non-profit organizations (NPOs) using the job demands-resources (JD-R) model by employing an extensive literature review. For this investigation, a thorough search of the literature was done to find conceptual and empirical publications. Based on the previous literature review, there were twenty-one studies have been included. It has been discovered that personal resources, job expectations, and job resources all play a significant part in keeping NPO staff engaged. Researchers have recommended philanthropic resources as novel resources in the JD-R model since the study shows that employees in non-profit organizations (NPOs) are engaged in philanthropic activities and exhibit distinct nature of work orientation compared to the workforce in profit-oriented organizations. The study's novelty stems from introducing new variables such as service consciousness, altruism, compassion, and belief in human benevolence under philanthropic resources. Second, emotional demand is proposed as a new variable under job demand. Third, ethical and authentic leadership are offered as new variables under job resources.

Modeling and Optimization of Cost-Based Hybrid Flow Shop Scheduling Problem using Metaheuristics

The cost-based hybrid flow shop (CHFS) scheduling has been immensely studied due to its huge impact on productivity. For any profit-oriented organization, it is important to optimize total production costs. However, few researchers have studied hybrid flow shops (HFS) with total production cost utilization. This paper aims to develop a computational model and test the exploration capability of metaheuristics algorithms while optimizing the CHFS problem. Carlier and Neron defined three hypothetical benchmark problems for computational experiments. The popular optimization algorithms PSO, GA, and ACO were implemented on the CHFS model with ten optimization runs. The experimental results proven that ACO performed well regarding mean fitness value for all benchmark problems. Besides this, CPU time for PSO was very high compared to other algorithms. In the future, other optimization algorithms will be tested for the CHFS model, such as Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) and the Crayfish Optimization Algorithm (COA).

The Strategic Management course is a course designed to provide students with an understanding so they can implement a series of managerial decisions and actions in determining company performance in the long term. After students complete this strategic management course, students are expected to understand strategic management in terms of environmental observation, strategy formulation (strategic planning or long-term planning), strategy implementation, and evaluation/control. In addition, students are able to consider the implications of organizational strategy for the entire human resource system in the organization by translating organizational goals into specific resource management systems.

Do Information Technology and Human Resources Create Business Performance: A Review

Purpose: Nowadays, information technology is used massively by business organisations in order to reap maximum profits. This condition is possible if the organisation has superior human resources in the IT field. The purpose of this research is to review and convince that information technology and human resources are important factors for the success of business organisations to achieve the ideal vision and mission that has been designed before. The two factors complement each other and cannot be separated. Theoretical framework: Information technology will have a significant impact on business development if operated properly by competent and capable humans. Information technology and the human element, among others, fall into the category of tangible and intangible resources. So, this study will also slightly correlate the RBV theory that has been slightly discussed in the previous paragraph. In addition, it complements the discussion of the study to make it more interesting and comprehensive. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research method took place in three stages. The first step was to collect and then review available literature and research. Next, the data was examined and the findings incorporated into the study framework. Third, instrument development. This stage involves detailing all the variables and describing the measurement items that have been developed. Findings: The results of this study have provided evidence that human proficiency in IT will bring blessings to profit-oriented organisations. Moreover, the current business environment is increasingly dynamic and disruptive. Research, practical & social implications: This research is expected to be a useful input for business people to be more courageous in making decisions when it comes to investing in IT and human resources in order to create superior and competitive business performance. Originality/Value: The results of this study are expected to be useful input for business people to be more courageous in making decisions when investing in IT resources and human resources in order to create superior and competitive business performance. In addition, it is also expected to be a formal discussion material in universities, especially business administration and management study programmes so that new and fresh ideas can be found that can be used as further research material so as to enrich the knowledge literature.

Improving Sales Force Performance Through Effective Human Resource Management

Human resources (HR) is one of the important things in supporting the achievement of a maximum goal. The company as a profit-oriented organization really expects targets in terms of sales, production, delivery, performance and other goals within the company to be achieved immediately. This study used a qualitative method of collecting data sourced from documents, books, journals, articles / other online media, using grounded research theory aimed at developing theory (theory building) inductively based on data. The result of this study is that human resource management can improve sales force performance. Through the results of Suparman's research that human resource management is able to improve sales force performance in the case example here is PT. Perdana Mitra Abadi Cianjur which develops the potential of its employees through the development of human resource management, namely providing in-service training to its employees regarding product knowledge and soft skills.

Is Islamic FinTech coherent with Islamic banking? A stakeholder's perspective during COVID-19

The prime purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Islamic fintech in the Islamic banking sector through a stakeholder approach in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through self-administered questionnaires, the study collected the data of 1000 respondents for seven categories of stakeholders directly or indirectly associated with Islamic banking and Islamic finance in Pakistan. The stakeholders include the local community, customers, managers of Islamic banks, depositors, employees, regulatory officials, and advisers of Sharia (Islamic Law). The findings indicate that respondents revealed a keen interest in Islamic banking and Islamic fintech, particularly during and post-COVID-19 and believed that Islamic banks must not be considered as profit-oriented organizations. Rather their benefit to society is way beyond profit maximizations. The respondents noted several factors to focus on the projects related to community engagement, promoting sustainable development and reducing poverty in the country. The study unveils that Islamic banks must adopt the practices of Islamic fintech and financial innovations to align the community's social goals. While COVID-19 crisis further facilitated the communities to include Islamic fintech in the Islamic banking system.

Examining the Role of Organisational Learning Theory and Learning Organisations in the Era of Digitalization: A Literature Review

In order to translate individual knowledge into organisational knowledge, organisations use organisational learning (OL). In the absence of clear prescriptions, organisations have difficulty putting practical ideas into practise. Adaptability, acceptance of change, and performance in terms of operations are critical to the existence of any organisation, but this is especially true for profit-oriented organisations. An existing literature review on organisational learning and learning organisations was conducted to answer the following question in this conceptual paper: For starters, how can you tell if a company is learning when you see it? Second, how do organisational learning and learning organisations vary conceptually? What are the barriers that prevent an organisation from becoming a learning organisation? Fourth, how can being a learning organisation benefit company? The study also looks at for instances of learning organisations, such as those in Malaysia and the United States, to bolster its findings. Since organisational innovativeness is directly linked to long-term organisational performance, this article backs up the claim that organisational learning culture has an impact on it. As a result, all organisations should make an effort to transform into organisations that value learning.

Marketing Mix Stategy at Mamba`ul Ma`arif Islamic Boarding School Jombang

Currently, competition in education is unavoidable, and many educational institutions are then abandoned by society. The managerial ability to understand the marketing of educational services is a prerequisite in maintaining its existence and increasing the educational institutions. The marketing concept, which was initially only known and applied in profit-oriented organizations, can also be used in non-profit organizations, including Pesantren. Pesantren during the three decades (1997-1998) could be classified into two major types: first, the old or classical type, which is learning about classical Islamic texts; second the new type, namely establishing several schools and madrasah. Pesantren Mamba`ul Ma`arif Denanyar Jombang is included in a new type of Islamic Boarding School. This research attempts to analyze the managerial strategy that`s used in the Pesantren. This research allows qualitative and data sources will be narrated by a descriptive method.

Global Surveillance Networks and International Health Regulations in the Early Detection and Control of Epidemics

An elaborate global health system has been developed around the world as a bulwark against infectious disease threats. The system consists of various networks of formal and informal organizations serving different stakeholders. This network has different purposes, methods, resources and accountability; it consists of public institutions operating in different fields of influence (at local, national, regional or global level), profit-oriented and non-profit private sector organizations. The current global health system has done important work to protect and improve human health. However, the world continues to face long-standing and emerging or re-emerging infectious disease threats. These threats vary greatly in severity and probability of risk, and each requires separate struggle dynamics. In addition, as with morbidity and mortality rates, these infections have many complex social and economic effects and consequences that differ. It is discussed whether the global health system with its current situation can provide effective protection against a number of communicable disease threats. Due to the recent emerging threats of Ebola, Zika, dengue fever, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), COVID-19, and influenza epidemics, and the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance, this system is being put to the test. Weak health systems, urbanization, globalization, climate change, civil wars and conflicts, and the changing nature of pathogen transmission between human and animal populations, uncontrolled population growth in some risk areas aggravate current concerns. "Human-induced outbreaks resulting from laboratory accidents" or deliberate biological attacks are considered as other potential risks, making international cooperation and coordination important. International epidemiological surveillance systems and international health regulation coverage are expanding their scope as early intervention practices and tools that are critical in preventing infectious diseases from reaching epidemic levels and minimizing global risks. Also, the effectiveness of early warning surveillance systems is being improved with the use of new technologies.

Escalation of Village Enterprises in Developing Digitalized Financial Management Innovations in the Tapal Kuda Area

In Indonesia, many profit-oriented entities operate, one of which is Village-Owned Enterprises which is included in a profit-oriented organization to improve village welfare. The main activity of Village-Owned Enterprises is as a village-owned business center that aims to increase the value of the village. Village-Owned Enterprises as a profit entity must meet financial reporting standards that have been ratified and issued by the Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI) to maintain the transparency of its entity. Financial Accounting Standard Micro Small Medium Entity (FAS MSME) as a guideline for the presentation of financial statements of profit-oriented entities clearly explains how an entity that has a permanent advantage prepares financial statements for entities such as Village-Owned Enterprises. The web is a database application that provides multi-functional calculation features as a perfect bridge for compiling mosque financial reports that are more relevant and accountable. Following Financial Accounting Standard Micro Small Medium Entity (FAS MSME) guidelines, the outputs generated by using a web-based tool to compile mosque financial reports are a list of accounts, general journals, ledgers, trial balances, profit/loss statements, statements of changes in equity, and statements of financial position.

The stakeholder–performance relationship in nonprofit sport clubs: the case of South-Eastern European basketball clubs

This research aims to disclose how the influence of different stakeholder groups is reflected in the organizational performance of nonprofit sport clubs. ANOVA, principal component analysis and correlation analysis were employed on data from 73 South-Eastern European basketball clubs. The results show that private sponsors’ involvement positively correlates with the clubs’ top sport achievements and financial results. In contrast, the interference of volunteers, the local community, the state and municipal authorities in club activities positively correlates with the accomplishment of local-community-oriented goals and nonfinancial objectives. The implications offer empirical support in those countries where sport clubs still operate as nonprofits for altering policy to ensure that the providers of public funds become more active in terms of monitoring the effects of their donations and sponsorships or for stimulating policymakers to think about changing the legislative framework to encourage top sport clubs to transform into profit-oriented organizations.

An empirical study of leadership, organizational culture, conflict, and work ethic in determining work performance in Indonesia's education authority

This study aimed to examine the influence of conflict, leadership, organizational culture, and work ethic on employees' work performance in North Sumatra Education Authority, Indonesia. This becomes important because this organization is not a profit-oriented organization, so it needs further understanding about how to foster the work performance. However, most of these research topics still concentrate on the western populations. A quantitative approach was used to conduct this study, where data were collected directly to the office of Education Authority with n = 180. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) is employed for data analysis in this study. The results showed that conflict negatively affects employees' work performance. However, leadership, organizational culture, and work ethic have positive effect on employees' work performance.

The mediating role of employee-oriented human resource policy in the relationship between strategic human resource management and organisational performance

The relationship between strategic human resource management and organisational performance has been widely discussed in the literature. However, very little research explores the precise mechanism of this relationship. This paper aims to examine the influence of strategic human resource management on organisational performance, introducing employee-oriented human resource policy as a potential mediator. The developed mediation model is empirically verified based on the data collected from 264 managers working in profit-oriented organisations in Poland. Factor analysis has been used to verify constructs (strategic human resource management, employee-oriented human resourcepolicy, and organisational performance), and regression analysis has been used to verify the proposed model. The findings of the study suggest that employee-oriented human resourcepolicy mediates the relationship between strategic human resource managementand organisational performance. The results of the study can help contemporary managers to understand how to develop and implement human resource management solutions aligned with an employee-oriented approach to human resource policy including development programmes, pay systems, performance appraisal, planning and succession plans, as well as the recruitment and selection of candidates.This research conceptualises and tests anovel strategic human resource management-based model of organisational performance with employee-oriented human resource policy as a mediator.

Researchers in Ghana identify specific factors that “provide the seedbed for institutionalized bullying” in universities

Purpose The authors decided to study the causes of coercive management behavior (CMB) in universities because this area has been neglected in the past. There has been a lot of research into CMB in profit-oriented organizations, but it has been assumed that universities were unaffected. Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted at 10 universities, five from the private sector and five from the state sector out of the 100 accredited Ghanaian universities. The authors sent out 405 questionnaires and 371 were returned. Findings The results showed a strong relationship between specific causes and different dimensions of CMB. The authors said their analysis identified specific factors that “provide the seedbed for institutionalized bullying”. Originality/value The authors said the research provides the basis for designing policies for employees at any organization. A one-size-fits-all approach was not always appropriate, however, and their identification of the role of individual factors could help universities find their own solutions.

Intellectual capital is of great value to profit-oriented organizations today. In the modern environment, the issue of strategic advantage is inseparable from the consideration of the issue of intellectual capital, bearing in mind that intellectual capital is a generator of economic value. In order for banks, as modern profit-oriented organizations, to achieve target performance, they need to know what their competitive advantage is, and to identify the necessary capacities and resources for sustainable business. The role of intellectual capital is crucial when it comes to the performances of modern banks, given the dynamic competitive environment in which they operate today. However, regardless of that, the literature that focuses precisely on the settings of these financial organizations is insufficiently represented and fragmented. This research, based on the application of the content analysis method, provides a structured review of the literature on the specifics of managing intellectual capital in banks. Further research could analyse the impact of intellectual capital on the performances of banks operating in the Republic of Serbia.

Empirical Evidence of Organizational Strategy and the Performance of Faith-Based Organizations

Effective implementation of organisational strategy is considered a major tool for facilitating firm performance and global competitiveness. However, most academic discussions and debates in existing literature have limited the discourse of strategy implementation in profit-oriented organisations, particularly in the Nigerian context. Therefore, this study explored the impact of the constructs of organisational strategy and performance of a faith-based organisations. A survey of 297 respondants constitute the population for this study. The research study is descriptive in nature, and it adopted a mixed method research design. A simple regression analysis was utilized for the analysis of the completed questionnaire. Also, thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative interview. The result shows that personality of the employees significantly influences member satisfaction. Therefore, this study recommends that faith-based organisations must ensure that their organisations consistently provide training for employees in order accommodate people irrespective of their peculiarities.

Modern banks have a specific role and a whole range of functions of paramount importance, as financial institutions for granting loans, creating loans, mobilizing savings and economic development. In the financial sector, there is a growing number of people who are using increasingly innovative and creative ways of targeting all perceived weaknesses in banks and credit approval systems. The persons committing fraud have become increasingly sophisticated, which means that measures to prevent fraud must be constantly developed to ensure that they are able to deal with the threat. The fight against fraud is crucial for financial services institutions. This article aims not only to briefly describe the role of internal control and internal audit in detecting possible fraud in banks, as profit-oriented organizations in today's complex and highly changing business environment, but also to point out the advantages they have in the more efficient management of bank activities.
