August Weismann, 1834–1914

THE name of August Weismann, the famous A professor of zoology in the University of Freiburg-im-Breisgau, the centenary of whose birth falls on January 17, will always be remembered as that of one who exercised a profound influence on the progress of biological doctrine and speculation. As a teacher of zoology Weismann achieved a far-reaching reputation; and by the students who worked under his direction, among whom, it may be remembered, was the late Prof. Gilbert Bourne of Oxford, his instruction was estimated at the highest value. But it was as an investigator and explorer of the methods of evolution that his influence was most widely felt, especially perhaps in Great Britain.

Mimicry in Animals

ON November 24, Prof. G. D. H. Carpenter, Hope professor of zoology in the University of Oxford, delivered the second part of his inaugural lecture (see NATURE of November 25, p. 813). Dealing with the imitation of inedible or distasteful by edible species (Batesian mimicry), and the resemblances between inedible models (Mullerian mimicry or synaposematism), he laid stress on the fact that edibility and the reverse are not absolute but relative. The results of experiment accord well with theory, as is shown by Prof. Carpenter's own observations with monkeys, Moreton-Jones's with birds and Cott's with frogs. The fact of preferential feeding is well established. The polymorphism often shown by mimetic species is also in accordance with theory. It is evident that while models would gain, on the principle laid down by Miiller, by diminishing diversity between their appearances, mimics on the other hand would find advantage by increasing it. Mimicry cannot be simply the result of coincidence due to a limited range of colour, nor can it be accounted for by supposing a parallel drift of variation. Mimicry might deceive an artist, not an anatomist. The only available key to the diverse phenomena of mimicry is the principle of natural selection.

Honorary Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh

THE following elections to honorary fellowships of the Royal Society of Edinburgh were made at the ordinary meeting on July 3: Foreign Honorary Fellows: Prof. John J. Abel, professor of pharmacology in Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. Prof. Filippo Bottazzi, professor of experimental physiology in the University of Naples. Prof. Edwin G. Conklin, professor of biology in Princeton University. Prof. Nikolaj K. Koltzoff, professor of zoology in the State University, Moscow. Prof. Albrecht Penck, emeritus professor of geography in the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universit ät, Berlin and Prof. Pieter Zeeman, professor of physics in the University of Amsterdam. British Honorary Fellows: Sir George Macdonald, president in 1928 of Section H (Anthropology) of the British Association, and Sir William Napier Shaw, formerly director of the Meteorological Office. The Gunning Victoria Jubilee prize, 1928-1932, was presented to Sir James Walker and the Makdougall-Brisbane prize, 1930-1932, to Dr. A. C. Aitken.

Fifth Pacific Science Congress

AT the invitation of the Government of Canada and under the auspices of the Canadian National Research Council, the Pacific Science Association will hold the fifth Pacific Science Congress, for the study of Pacific problems, in Victoria and Vancouver, B.C., Canada, on June 1–14. It is expected that some thirty countries bordering on the Pacific Ocean will be represented at the Congress by four to six hundred men of science. The president of the Executive Committee of the Congress will be Dr, H. M. Tory, president of the National Research Council of Canada and director of the National Research Laboratories. The Congress will open at Victoria on June 1, where sessions will be held until June 3. On June 4, it will proceed to Vancouver, where further sessions will be held until June 14. A post-Congress tour has also been arranged from June 14 until June 19, when it will terminate at Calgary. The Congress will work in two divisions: Biological Sciences, under the chairmanship of Prof. C. McLean Fraser, professor of zoology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and Physical Sciences, under the chairmanship of Prof. R. W. Brock, professor of geology and geography at the University of British Columbia. The secretary of the Congress is Mr. S. J. Cook of the National Research Council, whose address, in connexion with the Congress, is Hotel Vancouver. Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Prof. G. C. Bourne, F.R.S

THE death on March 8 of Gilbert Charles Bourne, emeritus professor of zoology and comparative anatomy in the University of Oxford, will be deplored by his colleagues and many friends in Oxford and elsewhere. The sudden ending of such a remarkably active and useful life will be felt as a serious loss.

40. Heredity and Milking Function: The Inheritance of Milk and Butterfat in Red Poll Cattle

This study is a continuation of the investigations of Prof. Agar, Professor of Zoology, University of Melbourne, entitled “Heredity and milking function,” which appeared in the Journal of Agriculture of Victoria in January, 1926; and it deals with the inheritance of milk, butterfat percentage, and butterfat in the Victoria Stud of Red Poll Cattle owned by the Department of Agriculture of Victoria, at the State Research Farm, Werribee. The milk and butterfat records used in these investigations are the 273 day records performed under the regulations governing the Victorian Government Pure-bred Herd Test, published annually, and included in the successive volumes of the Red Poll Herd Book of Australia. They cover the period since the establishment of the Government Herd Test—1912–13 to 1929–30.

The Riddle of Migration

THE author of this book is professor of zoology in the University of Alberta and he has most courageously undertaken the experimental study of the causes of the migration of birds. Some most astounding facts—experimental and observational—are recorded in his book. Edmonton, the city in which the University is situated, has wonderful advantages for this study. The tremendous contrast between the seasons in Canada compels practically all the birds to migrate. The minimum temperature in winter may drop to -52° F., whilst the summer temperature may rise to 100°. Then to the north an unbroken plain stretches to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, whilst to the south-east a similar plain reaches the Gulf of Mexico, so that the physical obstacles to migration are slight. THE twelfth International Congress of Zoology will be held at Lisbon in the summer of 1935, under the presidency of Prof. Arthur R. Jorge, professor of zoology in the University of Lisbon.

Prof. W. D. Zelensky

The news has just reached Great Britain of the death of Prof. Wladimir Zelensky, professor of zoology and head of the Parasitological Department in the University of Leningrad, which occurred on April 27, 1930, at the age of fifty years.

Vertebrate Embryology

The text-book of vertebrate anatomy by the professor of zoology in the University of Illinois was so eminently useful, being concise and lucid, and illustrated by an adequate number of very clear diagrams, that it is not surprising to record the appearance of another edition, which has been revised and improved. It provides an account of the early development of Amphioxus, the frog, the chick, and man, the formation of their germ-layers, embryonic membranes and bodily form, and an excellent section dealing with organogeny. The third part of the book consists of a very instructive atlas of sections, which includes drawings of a valuable series of pig embryos. Part four is concerned with technique and deals with the preparations of embryological material, the use of the microscope, the making of drawings, and reconstructions.

Sir E. Ray Lankester, K.C.B., F.R.S

EARLY in the year 1879 I received a letter from the eminent comparative anatomist, Kitchen Parker, advising me to come over to Cambridge to take Francis Balfour's course of lectures in comparative embryology. I sailed from New York two days later, and by far the leading personal impression of my life was in meeting Francis Balfour in the great court of Trinity College, Cambridge. At this first moment he seemed to me a superman, and the impression was continually strengthened during the frequent and ever memorable contacts in lecture room, laboratory, afternoon bicycling trips, and evening dinners in Balfour's rooms. On these weekly occasions he was wont to invite two or three of his students, including William B. Scott and myself, to meet sympathetic colleagues of his from London, Cambridge, and Oxford. Among the latter I recall especially young Oscar Wilde, who was just beginning to attract attention; Henry N. Moseley, fresh from the Challenger voyage; and E. Ray Lankester, then professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at University College, London.

Obituaries

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, London, celebrated its centenary last year, yet Sir Ray Lankester succeeded the first professor of zoology—Robert Grant of Edinburgh. Grant had many pupils of eminence, including Sir Michael Foster, but his brilliant early promise was not fulfilled, and waned before his death into insignificance. Ray Lankester suddenly and swiftly made the zoological lecture-room one of the most noted places in the College. It was said that he was the only man in London who could hold his lectures at one o'clock, the sacred luncheon- hour, and have them crowded. His lecture-room, and Balfour's at Cambridge, were the two foci from which the new views on morphology and evolution were spread through the academic world, and his Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science was the organ of publication for the researches—now classic—which were going so swiftly, and apparently so surely, to complete Darwin's work.
