Embryology of Monsters

A RECENT issue of Giba Symposia, a journal produced by a pharmaceutical firm, contains two informative articles on monstrosities in embryological development. The first, by Dr. Hamburger, professor of zoology in Washington University, St. Louis, is a general account of natural and experimentally induced maldevelopments. The second, by Dr. Wolfgang Born, of the Department of Fine Arts of Louisiana State University, traces the course of monstrosities, real and imaginary, as they appear in painting, sculpture and mythology. It is interesting that Dr. Born is a son of the Gustav Born who was one of the founders of experimental embryology, and one of whose main discoveries was that two halves of a divided amphibian embryo will fuse together if they are kept in apposition. It is widely believed that this finding was one of those brilliant outcomes of an accidental observation. In the course of Born‘s studies on regeneration, some tadpoles were halved just after hatching. To enable him to distinguish individual larvae on which he was working, he left a part of the skin of the back intact after having halved the bodies. To his surprise he found next day that the halved larval bodies the dorsal skin of which had been left intact had re-united and healed together.

International Congress of Zoology, 1948

The executive committee of the Thirteenth International Congress of Zoology has announced that the Congress will be held in Paris during July 21–27, 1948. An attempt was made to arrange that the two Congresses, of Genetics and of Entomology, to be held in Stockholm in July and August 1948 respectively, should be brought closer together so that the Congress of Zoology could either precede or follow them, but this proved impossible. The Congress of Zoology will meet in the following sections, the sectional presidents' names being given in brackets: general zoology (Prof. A. Vandel); evolution and genetics (G. Teissier); cytology and protistology (Prof. E. Fauré-Frémiet); comparative and experimental embryology (E. Wolff); vertebrates (a) comparative anatomy (Prof. M. Prenant) and (b) systematics and ecology (Prof. E. Bourdelle); invertebrates except insects (Prof. L. Fage); entomology (Prof. R. Jeannel); applied zoology and parasitology (Prof. A. Vayssiére); zoogeography and palæontology (Prof. C. Arambourg); nomenclature (M. Fischer-Piette). The president of the Congress will be Prof. M. Caullery, professor of zoology at the Sorbonne, president of the permanent committee of the Congress of Zoology; and the secretary-general is Prof. Fischer-Piette, 55 rue de Buffon, Paris Ve., from whom particulars can be obtained.

Changing Genes: Their Effects on Evolution

There has been much speculation on the possible effects of radiation on human and animal life. The following article describes the functions of genes, the ultimate bearers of heredity, and the influence which their changes may have on the survival of living organisms. Dr. Muller is Professor of Zoology at Indiana University. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1946 for discovering that mutations can be produced by X-rays.

Dr. H. L. Clark

Dr. Hubert Lyman Clark, formerly curator of echinoderms, more recently curator of marine invertebrates and associate professor of zoology, at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, died on July 31, at the age of seventy-seven. In more than one hundred papers he has left a vast contribution to the knowledge of the group he loved, echinoderms. His first publication was in 1896; his latest, half a century later, in 1946. He started near home with papers on the echinoderms of the Bermudas, the West Indies and the east coast of North America. But he was to range far afield, to write of the echinoderms of most parts of the world and to make those of a distant land, Australia, his peculiar province.

Prof. G. Matthai

We regret to announce the death at Cambridge on June 25 of Prof. George Matthai, formerly of the Indian Educational Service and emeritus professor of zoology in the University of the Punjab at Lahore. Dr. Matthai succeeded the late Lieut.-Colonel J. Stephenson as professor of zoology at Lahore in 1919. Under Stephenson the Lahore School of Zoology had been raised to a high degree of efficiency and was facile princeps among the Indian Schools; Prof. Matthai worked hard to maintain this proud position, though of late years Lahore has been challenged and has had to yield pride of place to Lucknow. Prof. Matthai would under normal conditions have retired in 1942, but as a war measure his term of office was extended until 1945.

Thomas Hunt Morgan, 1866-1945

Thomas Hunt Morgan, born 25 September 1866 at Lexington, Kentucky, was the elder son of Charlton Hunt Morgan of that State. His mother, Ellen Key Howard, was from Baltimore. There were two younger children in the family, of whom his sister Ellen survives him. From the University of Kentucky, Morgan graduated B.S. 1886 and proceeded to postgraduate work in the same University, later removing to Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, where he took his Ph.D. in 1890. From that date his academic career falls into three periods: From 1891 to 1904 he was Professor of Zoology at Bryn Mawr College for women ; 1904 to 1928, Professor of Experimental Zoology at Columbia, New York ; while from 1928 to 1945 he was Professor of Biology at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, as director of the William G. Kerckhoff laboratories .

University College, Hull: Appointments

Prof. J. Stanley Gardiner, F.R.S

JOHN STANLEY GARDINER, emeritus professor of zoology in the University of Cambridge and one of the outstanding figures in British zoology, died suddenly on February 28 at the age of seventy-four. His research career began in 1896 when he took part in the Royal Society's well-known expedition of Funafuti ; from then onwards he was recognized as an authority on the distribution of marine animals in general and on the madreporarian corals in particular. Between 1897 and 1909 he organised and led three major expeditions to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, each of which threw considerable light on the broad relationships between the physical and biological aspects of oceanography. Perhaps the most interesting of these expeditions was that to the Maldive Archipelago, for it led to the theory that a large land mass could be eroded to a depth of about 150 fathoms, thus giving rise to a submerged plateau which would later provide a foundation for coral reefs. From 1909 onwards, university duties prohibited further expeditions, but at least three other major projects owe much to Gardiner's inspiration and active support: the Suez Canal expedition under Munro Fox (1924), the Indian Ocean expedition (1933) under Seymour Sewell and the Lake Titicaca expedition under H. C. Gilson (1937). Gardiner's work was recognized by his election to the Royal Society at the relatively early age of thirty-six, and in later years he received the Agassiz Medal of the U.S. National Academy of Science, the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society, and the Darwin Medal of the Royal Society. He delivered the Lowell Lectures at Harvard in 1930.

Dr. L. Kuščer

MR. R. S. HAWES, University College, Exeter, has learned from Dr. Jovan Hadži, professor of zoology in the University of Ljubljana, that Dr. L. Kuščer, the well-known malacologist, died in 1943, after imprisonment by the Italians. Dr. Kuščer was an authority on the cavicolous snails of Jugoslavia, and, in spite of difficulties which would have defeated a lesser enthusiast-he lived in constant ill-health and in something near to poverty-he had assembled an unrivalled collection of his material. He was an incorrigible idealist and admirer of Britain. British zoologists whose work took them to Slovenia will remember his cheerful, untiring helpfulness and simple, but charming, hospitality.

Prof. E. S. Goodrich, F.R.S.

EDWIN STEPHEN GOODRICH was born on June 21, 1868, at Weston-super-Mare and died at Oxford on January 6. He was brought up in France, spoke French like a Frenchman, and always remained a great admirer of that country. After returning to England he entered University College, London, in 1888, and it was while studying there as an art student at the Slade School that he heard some public lectures given by Ray Lankester and realized that zoology was his proper profession. He became assistant to Ray Lankester, and when the latter went to Oxford to become Linacre - professor of zoology and comparative anatomy, Goodrich followed him'. He entered Merton College as a commoner in 1892, and ultimately became a fellow and a professorial fellow of the same College, when he succeeded to the Linacre professorship in 1921. He always prided himself on his undivided allegiance to Merton, and it must have been a source of great satisfaction to him when, a month before hip ath, he was made an honorary fellow of Mertor

Dr. G. V. Buchanan

DR. GWYNNETH VAUGHAN BUCHANAN, senior lecturer in zoology at the University of Melbourne, died towards the end of June 1945. Dr. Buchanan was born in Sydney in November 1886, and was educated at Toorak College and the University of Melbourne. For a time she acted as professor of zoology in the University of Western Australia before she returned to her old university as senior lecturer under Sir Baldwin Spencer. To English zoologists she is perhaps best known for her outstanding work on the development of the marsupials, undertaken in conjunction with Dr. Elizabeth Frazer at University College, London, in 1918. In Australia, the great influence for good that she exercised on the many students to whom she was so much more than a mere university teacher will long be remembered. It was largely owing to her influence and enthusiasm that the McCoy Society for Field Investigation and Research came into being and became such an outstanding success. After some months of ill-health, bravely borne, she retired from active teaching in February of this year, but until the last she continued her enormous correspondence with old students scattered, by the War, to distant parts of the world.

New Linacre Professor at Oxford: Prof. A. C. Hardy, F.R.S.

PROF. A. C. HARDY, whose recent appointment as Linacre professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at Oxford has been announced, is especially distinguished for his work in the sphere of oceanography. He is a leading authority on marine plankton, and throughout his researches has stressed the ecological aspect. Prof. Hardy started his career as a member of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Research Staff at Lowestoft in 1921, working on the natural history of the herring in relation to the plankton. In 1924 he joined the research staff of the Discovery as chief zoologist under the late Dr. Stanley Kemp. He went on the Antarctic voyage of 1925–27, and published, with the late Dr. E. R. Gunther, important results on the ecology of plankton animals in southern waters. These included studies of animal and plant interrelations (developing his hypothesis of animal exclusion), 'patchiness' of plankton, correlations of whale and plankton distribution, vertical migration and the combined effect of this with varying current systems at different depths.

Chair of Zoology at University College, Cardiff: Prof. James Brough

AT the opening of the present session, Prof. James Brough entered upon his new duties as professor of zoology and comparative anatomy in University College, Cardiff, a post upon which distinction had been conferred by the personality and prosperous tenure of the late Prof. W. M. Tattersall. The appointment is an interesting one, because Brough's honours degree, taken at Armstrong College, Newcastle upon Tyne, was in geology, and his published researches are almost entirely palæontological. But he he used his geological knowledge with the avowed and persistent aim of interpreting the evolutionary history of the bony fishes, and his researches have already thrown new light on that difficult problem and have proved to be of fundamental importance for the study of the Palæoniscids. To further these studies he has travelled far and wide, adding to his material by collecting in South Africa and Rhodesia, in the Austrian Alps, in northern Italy and in Spitsbergen, studying in London and Edinburgh, in Stockholm, Paris, Frankfort and Milan. His zoological knowledge, reinforced by his palæontology and his own vivid personality, gave verve and imagination to his teaching in the Department of Zoology in the University of Edinburgh, from which he proceeded to Cardiff, and in his earlier post in the University of Manchester. During the War, he has assisted the Ministry of Food by acting as insect infestation inspector for the south-east district of Scotland. Dr. Brough's interest in educational methods and his researches, with which must be linked the studies in the early history of the Amphibia so successfully followed by his wife (Dr. Margaret Steen), promise well for the continued prosperity of the Department of Zoology at Cardiff.

Prof. Alexander Macalister, F.R.S. (1844–1919)

PROF. ALEXANDER MACALISTER, the famous Cambridge anatomist, was born on April 9, 1844, in Dublin, where he was educated at Trinity College. He qualified at the Irish Royal Colleges in 1861, became M.B. at Trinity College ten years later and M.D. in 1876. After acting as demonstrator of anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he was appointed professor of zoology, and eight years later professor of anatomy and chirurgery, at Dublin. In 1883 he succeeded Sir George Murray Humphry in the chair of anatomy at Cambridge, and held this post for thirty-six years. He was a prolific writer. Besides his "Text-book of Human Anatomy"(1889) for which he is best known, he was the author of "Introduction to Animal Morphology"(1876) and "Morphology of Vertebrate Animals" (1878) as well as of numerous papers on animal, morphology, human anatomy and small text-books for students. He was a man of remarkable versatility, being an able mathematician as well as versed in archæology, Egyptology and draughtsmanship. Like his cousin, Sir Donald Macalister, he was a proficient linguist, having knowledge of fourteen languages. He received many honours. In 1881 he was elected, a fellow of the Royal Society. He was made hon. LL.D. of the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and McGill and hon. D.Sc. and senator of the University of Dublin. His name has been attached to the fovea gastrica and the annulus femoralis s. cruralis.
