Evaluation of Teaching Effect in Higher Educational Institutions and Identification of Its Influencing Factors

For higher educational institutions, teaching effect evaluation is necessary for improving teaching quality and reforming teaching mode. The evaluation has a long-lasting effect on the growth of students, and a close correlation with the immediate interests of every teacher. This paper evaluates the teaching effect and its influencing factors for the undergraduate education in ordinary colleges. It was found that the teaching effect is mainly affected by factors in four dimensions: teacher, student, teaching method, and teaching environment. Then, the authors reformed the teaching method, and tested its performance. The results show that the reformed teaching method improved the professional English ability of students more significantly than the ordinary teaching method. Therefore, higher educational schools are suggested to establish a set of scientific, reasonable, and practical evaluation methods for teaching effect, reflecting the teaching requirements, policies, faculty, and capital investment. The research findings lay the foundation for the long-term healthy development of higher education.

Innovative Exploration of the Cultivation Model of Professional English Abilities of College Students

With the continued education reform, the significance of higher education institutions in the cultivation of professional talents has gradually become apparent. Among them, the teaching of students’ professional English abilities in higher vocational colleges has received extensive attention from all walks of life. Traditional higher professional English teaching only takes English as the basic subject of public courses. In the teaching process, it focuses on the students’ test-taking ability, ignoring the improvement of students’ practical ability of professional English, which hinders the future development of students. In this case, this paper analyzes and studies the existing problems in the teaching of professional English ability of colleges and universities, and proposes feasible professional English teaching programs, in order to improve the English teaching ability of colleges and universities and promote the comprehensive development of students.

A Study of Effectiveness of Cultivating College Students’ Professional English Ability through English Salon—Taking AIB English Salon as an Example

A survey response (93.98%) from 203 of 216 graduates who took part in English Salon were conducted by the general situation of graduates using English. We realized the enterprise requirements for staff English application ability and the current situation of English usage by graduates in the workplace, analyzing the problems and difficulties of using English in their post. Also, we believed that English Salon was helpful in developing their English speaking skill in their professional ability training. Some suggestions will be taken to improve English Salon in cultivating college students’ professional English ability.

Cultivation Strategies of Professional English Ability of Cruise Service Program in Chinese Higher Vocational Schools

China's cruise industry has developed rapidly. The major international cruise companies have entered the Chinese market, and the number of cruise tourists has also increased. However, the speed of China's cruise talent training is lagging behind the speed of industry development, and the quality of talents does not meet the requirements of enterprises. This paper analyzes the professional ability of the work position in the service department on board, and proposes six countermeasures to improve the English ability of cruise service-oriented students in China's higher vocational colleges: implementing the ability-based teaching philosophy, clarifying the professional English teaching objectives, and carrying out the use of ESP classroom teaching method, designing teaching plans and contents based on industry standards, clarifying the evaluation standards of the students’ English language ability, and training the competent professional English teachers. For improving the English language ability of the students of the cruise service program, the paper concludes that the teachers need to establish a teaching philosophy based on competency, apply the ESP classroom teaching method, and to be trained with both English language teaching ability and cruise industry knowledge.

Developing ESP Teaching Materials Based on the Analysis of Information Engineering Majors’ Needs

Currently in China, the available ESP (English for Special Purpose) textbooks for engineering are still focused on reading, translation and grammar. Considering that Chinese undergraduates’ general English levels have been improved greatly in the recent years, and many engineering students have plans to apply for graduate study or work in joint ventures in the future, their needs for ESP course have gone beyond the contents of current available textbooks. This study aims to analyze Chinese engineering undergraduates’ needs on ESP course, and discuss how to develop ESP teaching materials and reform ESP teaching methods correspondingly. According to our investigation, the communication skill demanded by EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) courses and English workplace is the most desirable professional English ability. About 85% of the students prefer using e-textbook, and 53.33% of the students vote for interactive teaching method. Moreover, cross-analysis result shows that students with different vocational plans have different priorities on professional English skills. ESP practitioners need to consider these different needs, and design diverse activities for students.

Research of Situational Teaching Method in Urban Planning Professional English Teaching Reform

Under the trend of internationalization, based on the academic features of urban planning, this paper illustrates the benefits of using situational teaching method in urban planning teaching progress. Then it expounds the content and feature of the four aspects in situational teaching method, those are teaching topic module settings, diversification of teaching design, diversification of teaching ways and network teaching resource database. The paper discusses the application of situational teaching method in the professional teaching, which focuses on the teaching reform. In order to make urban planning subject better face the trend of internationalization, and satisfy the society to cultivate professional talents in the 21st century, and meet the demand of stronger international competitiveness of foreign-oriented talents, professional English, as a kind of important and convenient language medium, will occupy a more important position in study and communication[1]. Teaching level of professional English has become the important measure to the internationalization degree of college teaching. There-recognition of the role of professional English and making teaching reform has become an important subject to concern in many colleges and universities. But recently, professional English ability in urban planning subject, on the one hand, is from the original foundation of English learning, on the other hand is through school little professional English training course. Due to the course construction is not mature, plus teaching time-limit as an objective reason, as well as the insufficient recognition of students, "read + translation" as a single transmission type of teaching way makes professional English teaching cannot achieve good effects[2]. Therefore, this article tries from the characteristics of urban planning subject, to change the traditional teaching mode, to explore reform and practice of the application of situational teaching method to the urban planning professional English teaching, in order to break through the limited classroom space and time limit, to maximum improve teaching effects.

Teaching practice and experiences for foreign students on clinical probation in Cardiology department

Clinical probation is an important part of clinical teachings for foreign students in Medical Colleges.We chose some physicians and candidate doctors as teachers,who had both high professional level and English ability,according to the characteristics of the students.Before class,teachers had to complete the teaching plan,prepare for the language and lectures,and choose a good case.During the procedure,teachers began the training from the trivial matter,and used PBL teaching methods,put emphasis on care history collecting and physical examination,paid a great attention to the culture of clinical thinkings,etc.At last,some suggestions were put forward to solve the existing problems.
