The widespread use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine makes them an emerging contaminant in the aquatic environment. The degradation of antibiotics is essential for environmental remediation and requires low-cost, high-performance photocatalysts. In this work, water-dispersible, highly efficient Yttrium oxide/Nickel Oxide anchored Graphene Oxide (GO/Y2O3/NiO) ternary composites were fabricated via a facile hydrothermal procedure and photocatalytically active for the degradation of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) and + amoxicillin (AMOX) under visible light illumination. The formation of GO/Y2O3/NiO was confirmed by a variety of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. GO/Y2O3/NiO ternary composite material exhibits 94.03 % degradation efficiency for CIP and 78 % for AMOX, associated with a faster reaction rate and a longer response to visible light. In addition, the presence of GO in the ternary nanocomposite served as an electron conductor, leading to the production of superoxide and hydroxy radicals that have reduced band gap of 2.8 eV. A unique combination of GO /Y2O3/NiO nanocubes, nanorods and nanosheets enhanced the photocatalytic activity. In addition, GO/Y2O3/NiO exhibits high antibacterial and concentration-dependent cytotoxic properties. These studies demonstrated that GO/Y2O3/NiO nanocomposite photocatalysts have unique potential as both antibacterial and eco- friendly photocatalysts, which has great potential for use in photo nanotechnology.
