Smith-predictor based enhanced Dual-DOF fractional order control for integrating type CSTRs

Abstract Continuously Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTR) are one of the widely used reactors in the chemical industry. Controlling such reactors is challenging because many times it demonstrates a model which is having a pole at the origin of the s-plane. Moreover, the presence of a dead time necessitates more effective control measures. This work presents a modified smith predictor-based control for integrating type CSTRs with time delay in order to provide adequate servo and regulatory closed-loop responses. Numerous researches on dual DOF control suggested different controller settings for outer and inner-loop controllers. But, in the current study, both the controllers are proposed to be the same which drastically reduces the complexity of the design. To offer good robustness in the closed-loop response, the controller is synthesized with a user-defined maximum sensitivity. Case studies on CSTRs for both the nominal and disturbed process models are conducted and the same is compared with recently developed control laws. Lastly, a performance comparison on ISE, ITAE, and IAE is provided.

Models of Language Description and Linguocultural Code in Creating Images of the World in Turkic and Russian Languages

In the article, against the background of the system-centric paradigm, the features of the anthropocentric model and the linguo-cultural code are considered as an effective tool for creating and understanding national-cultural images that constitute the deep features of the national-cultural identity of languages. The study is based on the materials of the Kyrgyz, Turkish and Russian languages, organized into associative-verbal thematic fields of lexemes with direct meanings, which, as a result of secondary nomination processes, are used in figurative senses and for coding the originality of national-cultural semantics. Such an approach, taking into account the human factor and the historical and cultural identity of the ethnic group, becomes an effective tool for comprehending the national character of ethnic groups.

FEMALE CANDIDATES AND THE BANGLADESH PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

The number of female MPs elected by direct vote in Bangladesh's Parliament is abysmally low due to the low level of female candidates in the parliamentary elections. This study addresses the underrepresentation of female candidates in the election following the supply- and demand-side model of Norris and Lovenduski. We focus on the continuing patriarchal social and political culture, dynastic politics, campaign funding, and violence as supply-side factors and political parties and nominations, quotas/reserved seats, and rule compliance as demand-side factors that affect the candidate nomination process in Bangladesh. The article is based on semi-structured interviews with female and male MPs of the Bangladesh Parliament and aspirant female politicians who hold different party positions. The study argues that the patriarchal nature of politics and culture controls the supply and demand-side factors of candidate selection and discriminates against female candidates to vie in the general constituencies.

The effect of non-metallic inclusion morphology on the hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) resistance of L80 steel

The hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) resistance of four (4) L80 casing steels, with different nominal compositions and processing conditions, was determined using the NACE TM0284 HIC test. Microstructural and inclusion characterization of each steel was undertaken using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The morphology (equivalent diameter, aspect ratio and major length) of inclusions over identical analysis regions were measured for each steel. In total, >15,000 inclusions were characterized. Non-linear models correlating inclusion morphology with the measured values of CLR (crack length ratio) and CTR (crack thickness ratio) were developed. The models show that both CLR and CTR are complex functions of the diameter (equivalent) of oxide-based inclusions and the major length of the manganese sulfide (MnS) stringers. The models show that oxides <10 μm in diameter were found to have negligible effect on HIC resistance (CLR) while oxides >20 μm exhibited a significant and escalating negative impact on HIC resistance comparable to long (>50 μm) MnS stringers.

Сопоставление метонимической мотивации в русскоязычных и китайскоязычных коммерческих эргонимах

The paper examines metonymic motivations in the nomination process of commercial objects in Russian and Chinese in a comparative aspect. The aim of the study is to identify the similarities and differences of metonymic models in the Russian-language and the Chinese-language ergonyms. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time the metonymic motivation in the Russian-language and the Chinese-language commercial names is compared, and the causes of such motivation are defined. The results showed that metonymy is one of the main ways of creating ergonyms in both languages on the basis of three types of the presented information – the information about goods and services, owners and potential consumers. At the same time, there are some differences in the nomination of ergonyms: the Chinese-language commercial names are usually constructed on the models of “material – object” and “names of relatives” and the Russian commercial names are mostly created by the model “property – object’’. The examples of the Chinese names based on the model “property – object’’ are scarcely created. This phenomenon can be explained by the common method of man’s perception of the objective world and the different national culture of the Russian and the Chinese peoples.

Radiometric Re-Compensation of Sentinel-1 SAR Data Products for Artificial Biases due to Antenna Pattern Changes

SAR data products for Sentinel-1 have been freely available and delivered operationally on behalf of the European Space Agency since the routine operation of Sentinel-1A in 2014. These products were delivered using the best knowledge at their processing time, in particular with respect to the radiometric calibration. As reprocessing of SAR data products is not foreseen in the nominal processing chain of Sentinel-1, changes of applied processing parameters impact the SAR data quality and can be a disturbing factor for long-term monitoring of radiometric features. In particular, antenna pattern updates produce artificial radiometric steps which are visible in radar backscatter time series, especially in case of monitoring radiometric stable reference targets. This paper introduces a method for correcting changes due to such updates without the need of reprocessing SAR data products. The method was applied to long-lasting time series of data acquisitions which are used to monitor the radiometric performance with reference targets at the DLR calibration site. It has been shown that artificial steps due to antenna pattern updates disappear in backscatter timelines after correct application. Furthermore, the derived absolute radiometric accuracy was improved for the joint observation period of S1A and S1B for almost five years until December 2021.

Deverbal nominalization in Runyankore

In this paper I examine eleven different processes of deverbal nominalization in Runyankore, a Lacustrine Bantu language spoken in Uganda. After establishing both general and Runyankore-specific properties that distinguish nouns from verbs, I test each of these nominalizations against 13 phonological, morphological, and syntactic criteria. Although all eleven nominalization constructions can take the determiner-like initial vowel “augment”, and all can be derived from verb bases that include derivational suffixes (“extensions”), e.g. causative, applicative, and reciprocal, only some of the nominalizations allow a pronominal object prefix or a following noun phrase object or adverbial. The various properties are tabulated to show that the different nominalizations vary along a cline, meeting all, some, or none of the nine most discriminating criteria in defining “noun” vs. “verb”.

Board Effect and the Moderating Role of CEOs/CFOs on Corporate Governance Disclosure: Evidence from East Africa

Synopsis The research problem This study examines the effects of board size and board independence, as well as the interaction effect between board independence and CEOs/CFOs on corporate governance disclosure practices. Motivation Despite corporate governance (CG) reforms around the world, research evidence indicates that the levels of corporate governance disclosures (CGDs) in developing countries remain poor due to weak institutions and corporate governance systems. In particular, the corporate boards as a key mechanism of CG and the board nomination processes in East Africa remain largely opaque and dominated by majority shareholders, chief executive officers, and chief finance officers (CEOs/CFOs), giving rise to opportunistic behaviors that may be detrimental to firm value. The distinctive feature of the board nomination process/CG system in East Africa has implications for monitoring and corporate governance disclosure practices and compliance and calls for systematic research in this under-explored subject. Hypotheses H1: The association between board size and corporate governance disclosure will be positive. H2: The association between board independence and corporate governance disclosure will be positive. H3a: The presence of the CEO on the nomination/remuneration committee will negatively moderate the relationship between board independence and corporate governance disclosure. H3b: The presence of the CFO on the nomination/remuneration committee will negatively moderate the relationship between board independence and corporate governance disclosure. H3c: The presence of the CEO and CFO on the nomination/remuneration committee will negatively moderate the relationship between board independence and corporate governance disclosure. Target population Stakeholders including firm managers, practitioners, regulatory authorities, policymakers, and investors. Adopted methodology Ordinary least squares (OLS), fixed-effects model, and system generalized method of moments (GMM). Analyses Using a large and hand-collected dataset comprising 1000 firm-year observations from 2007 to 2017 in East Africa, this study develops a corporate governance disclosure index (CGDI) of East Africa consisting of 164 provisions. To test our hypotheses, this study adopts three analytical approaches, namely OLS and fixed-effects (FE) regressions and the two-stage system GMM to address the endogeneity concerns. Findings We find that large boards and independent directors are associated with greater disclosure of CG information. Our analysis suggests that CEO/CFO power negatively moderates the link between board independence and corporate governance disclosure, unlike those environments with stronger institutions and corporate governance systems. Thus, firms whose CEO and CFO are involved in remuneration or nomination committees disclose less CG information. The combined effect of the CEO and CFO on selection and remuneration committees and an independent board in reducing corporate disclosure appears more pronounced for the post-financial crisis period compared with the crisis period.

Intangible Religious Heritage: UNESCO’s Nomination Processes, Uncharted Sides and Legal Issues

ABSTRACT: The current article analyzes the inextricable and instrumental link between intangible religious heritage and tangible religious heritage. More specifically, UNESCO’s nomination processes are examined in order to investigate the evolution and the approach of national and global institutions to intangible religious heritage. Barriers and facilitating factors experienced by agriculture and natural resources university faculty members during the nomination process for teaching awards

AbstractTeaching awards provide faculty members external validation of their excellence in the classroom and opens pathways for leadership and research collaboration. The objective of this study was to identify barriers and facilitators experienced by faculty members during the nomination process. We conducted semi‐structured interviews with 12 faculty members in agriculture and natural resources to gather information about their experiences during the teaching award nomination process. Barriers experienced during the nomination process included time and effort needed to prepare the nomination package lack of administrative support, lack of awareness of award opportunities, questioning one's own competitiveness, and perceived biases in the award selection process. Factors that facilitated a faculty member submitting a nomination package included a culture of support; demonstrated efforts to improve one's teaching effectiveness; self‐confidence, valued external recognition, and persistence; promotion and tenure deadlines; and familiarity with the nomination process. Removing barriers and assisting faculty members during the nomination process requires improved communication about the existence and importance of teaching awards and support from administrators or faculty peers. This support could include teaching workshops, opportunities to participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and assistance in editing and preparing a teaching award nomination package.

Between politics and bureaucracy: a systematic literature review on the dynamics of public appointments

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to explain the dynamics of public appointments and present new possibilities for research in this field.Design/methodology/approachThe article is based on a systematic literature review from 2012 to 2021, identified in Web of Science, Scopus and SciELO, in English, Spanish or Portuguese. To explain the dynamics of public appointments, the following were analyzed: the nomination process; the motivations, objectives and criteria used; the results and impacts of appointments; and the profile of the nominees. The study focused only on discretionary appointments to fully public bodies and agencies.FindingsThe literature offers a limited explanation for the dynamics of appointments, by focusing on the dichotomy between loyalty and competence. Despite this, studies suggest that different contextual factors, such as administrative tradition or strategic choices, for example, determine the dynamics of appointments, indicating that it is a complex process that goes beyond the simple discussion of merit or clientelism.Originality/valueThe article presents an unprecedented analysis of the literature on the dynamics of public appointments and proposes an explanatory model that indicates that other factors, in addition to merit and loyalty, should be considered relevant for the selection criteria, the nomination process and the profile of who will be appointed. This model is useful both for the practical management of appointments and for the advancement of theory in this field and should receive improvements and future empirical evaluations.

Distinguished Microwave Lectures: An Enriching Experience for MTT-S Members and Speakers [Women in Microwaves

IEEE offers a Distinguished Lecturers Program, allowing Chapters to host distinguished lecturers who are excellent speakers and experts in their respective topical fields. Within the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S), this program is renamed the Distinguished Microwave Lecturers (DMLs) Program. In the summer of 2022, the MTT-S announced the DML class for 2023–2025. We observed that this was the 10th all-male class since 2009. In fact, there have been only five female DMLs since the 2009 class, including the present two female DMLs. A major reason is the lack of nominations of female candidates. The same observation is valid in terms of geographical diversity. Therefore, this column elaborates on the nomination process and shares the experiences of female DMLs.

An analysis of the titles of works of art in English from the perspective of linguistic pragmatics and linguistic culture

In this article, the features of preserving the names of works of art in English from the point of view of linguistic pragmatics and linguocultural science are explained. In addition, attempts are made to observe and research the local linguistic cultures of the science in the quality of anthroponyms and expressions, similes and metaphors in the object of the Uzbek language. The burden of the nomination process depends on the semantic requirements of the interpretation in linguistics. The linguistic pragmatics and linguocultural and logical changes of the names of works of art in English are similar, some of them are not only in terms of content but also about the production and research of correct structures.

Flaw Detection in Multi-Laser Powder Bed Fusion Using In Situ Coaxial Multi-Spectral Sensing and Deep Learning

Abstract Multi-laser powder bed fusion (M-LPBF) systems are garnering increased attention in metal additive manufacturing as they promise increased productivity and part size without sacrificing feature resolution or mechanical properties. However, M-LPBF introduces unique problems related to the interaction of multiple moving heat sources not observed in single laser systems, possibly leading to unexpected flaws and other process anomalies. Careful process modeling, planning, and monitoring are required to fully exploit M-LPBF. We present a novel in situ sensing and machine learning-based flaw detection for M-LPBF. Specifically, we consider a configuration where on-axis multi-spectral sensors are integrated and synchronized with each of the three lasers on a 3D Systems DMP Factory 500 printer. Each multi-spectral sensor monitors spectral emissions at two material-dependent wavelengths. The time series data generated from the multiple multi-spectral sensors are converted into a rasterized image per layer to be fed into a supervised deep learning (DL)-based semantic segmentation pipeline. To discriminate nominal process variations from anomalies, we explore a novel framework to incorporate context into the DL model which includes factors such as laser scan direction, processing parameters, and multi-laser proximity. We demonstrate our framework on in situ monitoring data collected during a build of carefully selected specimens seeded with surrogate lack of fusion flaws. Post-build X-ray computed tomography data are registered to the in situ data to generate ground truth labels for training and validation of the DL model.

Identifying barriers to shared decision-making about bariatric surgery in two large health systems.

Prior research suggests shared decision-making (SDM) could improve patient and health care provider communication about bariatric surgery. The aim of this work was to identify and prioritize barriers to SDM around bariatric surgery to help guide implementation of SDM. Two large US health care systems formed multidisciplinary teams to facilitate the implementation of SDM around bariatric surgery. The teams used a nominal group process approach involving (1) generation of multilevel barriers, (2) round-robin recording of barriers, (3) facilitated discussion, and (4) selection and ranking of barriers according to importance and feasibility to address. One health system identified 13 barriers and prioritized 5 as the most important and feasible to address. The second health system identified 14 barriers and prioritized 6. Both health systems commonly prioritized six barriers: lack of insurance coverage; lack of understanding of insurance coverage; lack of organizational prioritization of SDM; lack of knowledge about bariatric surgery; lack of interdepartmental clarity between primary and specialty care; and limited training on SDM conversations and tools. Health systems face numerous barriers to SDM around bariatric surgery, and these can be easily identified and prioritized by multistakeholder teams. Future research should seek to identify effective strategies to address these common barriers.

New Perspectives for Living Traditions: Intangible Cultural Heritage in North-East Hungary

AbstractThe UNESCO World Heritage Convention (1972) was originally focused on nature conservation and built heritage. The immaterial aspect of the worldwide heritage discourse arrived at a turning point in 2003, when the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage was adopted. The definition of the intangible cultural heritage provides essential frames for a wide range of interpretations. The UNESCO concept focuses on inclusive, representative and community-based traditions which are contemporary and living at the same time. In this sense, the intangible cultural heritage conception is based on the fundamental dichotomy of tradition and modernity. For the communities concerned, a new perspective for living traditions is the process from tradition to heritage. There are four essential features of this process: participation, consciousness, organization and valorization. They can make a difference between tradition and heritage. The Hungarian model for the implementation of the UNESCO Convention is based on a bottom-up system, where the heritage bearers themselves initiate the nomination process for the National Inventory. It is based on their strong commitment to their heritage and it relies on their involvement and participation. In this paper, three case studies from North-East Hungary (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County) represent different ways of “creating a heritage.” The various patterns are closely related to the ideas of identity, community cohesion, tourism, local economy and the preservation of living traditions.

In general, money politics fits into a transactional political pattern, in which votes are exchanged for goods or services. This study aims to study and analyze the legal provisions governing money politics, the role of the public and the KPU in fighting money politics, and the impact of money politics on Indonesian democracy. Subject selection, data tracking, determining research focus, collecting data sources, presenting data, and compiling reports are the steps in this research process. In this study, documentation was used to collect data by finding data about the variables studied in papers, journals and reports. Content analysis is used to analyze data, which can be cross-checked based on context. Law Number 10 of 2016 and Law Number 1 of 2015 prohibit political parties or coalitions of political parties from receiving compensation in any form during the nomination process for governor, mayor or regent.&#x0D; Keywords: Regulation; Public; KPU; Money politic.

Aspects of lexical nomination and a theory of lexical motivation

The paper analyses the means of lexical enrichment from the viewpoint of a theory of lexical motivation (TLM). After introductory notes, the methodological background (basic principles of TLM) is explained (section 2). Consequently, in section 3, a hierarchy of related concepts is introduced, namely, a three-tiered set of oppositions: (1) imitation nomination - lexical nomination, (2) intralinguistic nomination - cross- -linguistic nomination, (3) intralexemic nomination - interlexemic nomination. In accordance with that, the following types of lexical motivation are described: phonological motivation, word-formation motivation, morphological motivation, syntactic motivation, abbreviation motivation, semantic motivation, cross-linguistic (contact) motivation. These types represent particular means of lexical enrichment traditionally referred to as word formation, conversion, borrowing, clipping, etc. Moreover, in section 4 it is pointed out that these types of motivation are interrelated. This fact is reflected in the concept of motivational relatedness, which also applies to nomination processes. Nomination relatedness can be characterized as cooperation or determination. This is closely related to the concept of polymotivation, i.e., an alternative interpretation of nomination processes.
