A concept design stages protocol to support collaborative processes in architecture, engineering and construction projects

PurposeThis paper proposes and tests, through a series of structured multi-disciplinary design activities, a “Concept Design Stages Protocol” (CDS Protocol) to structure project initiation, to attain smoother collaboration and greater consensus among multi-disciplinary project teams.Design/methodology/approachA collaborative approach from the outset is imperative for project success, especially when considering multi-disciplinary teams in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. However, involving different disciplines hinders communication paths and affects informed decision-making.FindingsBased on these findings, the research demonstrates that the CDS Protocol provides a solid foundation to aid in the optimal implementation of collaborative design, and with particular regard to multi-disciplinary working.Originality/valueThe research demonstrates the potential for significant improvement in the optimisation of the conceptual design stages, with positive implications for time, communication and whole-team engagement.

Breakdown in Monitoring Project Performance to Reduce Transaction Cost in Public Sector Construction Projects: A Case Study from Pakistan

The purpose of this research is to break down the monitoring process to explore the problems which impede cost efficiency in contract monitoring in a developing country, such as Pakistan. This research investigated the issues and challenges to the cost-efficient and effective implementation of project monitoring systems in public sector construction projects in Pakistan. This study uses the transaction cost economics (TCE) lens, to explore the project monitoring process of construction projects, 25 interviews with Engineers and Associate engineers were conducted from public sector construction projects. Qualitative research was performed, and thick qualitative data has been coded, categorized, analyzed, and concluded. The study concluded that in principle, project monitoring contributes to reduced transaction costs, depending on how efficiently governance arrangements are made. Hurdles related to weak governance in the organization significantly increase the post-contract transaction cost (TC). As a result of the analysis, multiple issues have been identified from the study such as Political realities, capacity building, resource constraints, administrative issues, mutual dependency, and department coordination has a direct influence on the TCs in construction projects. The result of this study provides a deeper understanding and clear roadmap of the ongoing monitoring practices and processes in the public sector construction projects. It identifies the problems and issues of the monitoring process in the construction industry of developing countries which potentially causes to increase in the total project cost.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate and measure stakeholder engagement and interorganisational relationships involved in the project design process.Design/methodology/approachA mixed-methods design, which combined action study, focus group meetings and a survey with project stakeholders who were employees in this project to express their comments on current design processes in different sub-projects.FindingsThe transformation of the design process in the selected project can be categorised into three distinct areas: (1) people, (2) practices and (3) internal infrastructure. These three categories were a straightforward way to review, analyse and discuss this transformation. The findings revealed the major goals of the improvement process as summarised are reliability, efficiency and quality. Recommendations and future study directions were suggested by the end of the paper.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough the project selected in this research was limited to Australia, the results could be interpreted on the design process in many other construction projects with similar size all over the world.Practical implicationsThis research was very practical, with all data collected from the project in Australia. It summarised the difficulties met in the project and provided methods for stakeholders and industry practitioners to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the design process.Originality/valueThis research provided lessons learnt on the design process from a “Giga” project and provided sustainable methods to facilitate future projects into flexible and effective communication among stakeholders.

Dynamic Control and Management of Construction Engineering Cost

In the daily process of construction projects, project cost is a very critical part of the work. In order to effectively save costs and control the quality, it is necessary to conduct dynamic cost management according to the various construction links, and then formulate corresponding dynamic control measures for the project cost according to the actual situation. This article first analyzes the concept of dynamic management of project cost and control, and then briefly describes the dynamic control process and measures. Finally, according to the current status of the engineering industry, some pertinent suggestions are put forward, and it is expected to be helpful to the dynamic control and management of construction engineering costs in China.

Research on Cost Management in the Whole Process of Construction Project Based on Computer BIM

With the rapid development of national economy, China’s requirements for construction projects are more and more strict, which is a project with high energy consumption and construction cost. Therefore, the change of policy will greatly affect the whole process management of the project. However, BIM can minimize the whole process cost of construction project. Firstly, this paper analyzes the value of BIM in cost management and its application in the whole process. Then, this paper puts forward some problems in BIM application. Finally, some suggestions are put forward[1].

Research on Evaluation Method of Cost Management and Control Effect of Power Transmission and Transformation Project Based on BIM Technology

The power transmission and transformation project is the carrier of power energy transmission and plays an important role in supporting economic development and improving people's living standards. Based on the application status of BIM technology and the actual situation in power transmission and transformation projects, this paper combs the application fields of BIM technology from the perspective of the whole process of project construction, and constructs an index system based on the construction effect of the whole process of the project. The analytic hierarchy process is used to calculate the index weights, and the expert scoring method is used to evaluate the effects of different projects according to the actual situation, so as to enhance the application scope of BIM technology in the construction of power transmission and transformation projects. The research results of this paper can provide support and reference for the establishment of a construction digital model covering the entire process and resources of a power project, and a BIM system suitable for the power industry.

The mutual influence approach during the resource allocation process in construction projects

Project scheduling is one of the most important stages of construction project planning, which can be divided into several tasks. Resource allocation is one of them. Resource allocation plays an important role in defining and forming the appropriate implementation plan that achieves the best cost and quality within the shortest possible period. This paper aims to provide a practical approach that helps the project planner in performing the resource allocation process in the manner that achieves the most benefit and effectiveness based on actual values, the use of databases and a mathematical analytical model. The results showed that the proposed model can provide significant benefit in the process of resource allocation and risk management, and that it is flexible to support decisions during decision-making processes.

Research on Application Strategy of BIM Technology in Construction Project Management

BIM technology can participate in the entire process of building construction projects, using a three-dimensional way to restore all links involved in the process of building production. This intuitive and clear presentation method helps architects correct and quickly repair existing loopholes in a timely manner, ensure the smooth development of construction projects, improve efficiency and reduce losses due to project delays.

Exploration and Practice of Engineering Management Specialty in the Teaching of Innovative Curriculum System Construction

The engineering management major is a comprehensive and practical major. However, with the rapid development of the construction industry, the scale of construction projects has become larger and larger and the craftsmanship has become more and more complex. It is difficult for traditional engineering management teaching models to clearly, intuitively and vividly present the implementation and management process of construction projects. Exploring the positioning of engineering management disciplines and the theories and methods of education and teaching has very urgent practical significance. This article aims to explore and practice the construction of an innovative curriculum system for the engineering management major. This research is based on the construction of an innovative curriculum system for the engineering management major. Establish a curriculum system centered on student development and aimed at improving students' innovative quality. Through questionnaire surveys and interviews, we obtained first-hand information on two engineering management teacher education courses. The engineering management course of School B is similar to the engineering management course of School A. It is a modular course divided into five modules. Establish an independent innovation learning module. Course credits are 6 credits, accounting for 3.7% of the total credits; practical teaching credits are 26 credits, accounting for 16.1% of the total credits. The results show that the educational curriculum system of School B can promote the all-round development of students.

A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF RISK ASSESSMENT IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Before planning and managing risks to reduce the causes of severe risks associated with road construction, it is very important to conduct an evaluation first. Aspects related to risk are convoluted in several steps from design to planning to project fulfillment. This research aims to implement a complete risk management process for highway construction projects. Through this process, there will be a list of risks in the highway construction project (risk identification) and the definition of the most significant risk through the application of the evaluation process (applying risk analysis and valuation). To successfully improve the performance of road projects, it is necessary to identify and assess various risk factors in a project for efficient project fulfillment. The research method begins by reviewing at least 50 articles to find a list of the main risk factors that might be encountered during highway construction. This analysis involves the identification, classification, and assessment of various risks involved in the construction of a highway project.

EVALUASI PENJADWALAN PROYEK DENGAN METODE LINE OF BALANCE (STUDI KASUS : HOTEL SANTIKA BATAM)

With the development of technology and information, Indonesia's construction also continues to develop. This can be seen from the many construction projects that are being carried out or that have been completed in Indonesia. In the construction project process, of course it will involve project management so that the construction project goes according to plan and can utilize resources effectively, one of them is by arranging project work scheduling. This study aimed to evaluate project scheduling using the Line of Balance method. The research discussion would include determining the duration of work using the Line of Balance method, comparing the duration of work with existing scheduling and identifying the advantages of project scheduling with the Line of Balance method. The research data util ized scheduling from Santika Hotel Batam construction project. The use of scheduling Line of Balance has advantages in determining the time to start work arranged with each work package.

The Application of BIM Technology in the Cost Management of the Whole Process of Construction Projects

The whole process control of construction cost is the most effective way in the current project cost management. However, due to the large number of participants involved in the construction project, the long construction period, and the lack of shared information platforms for all parties, it is difficult to implement truly effective management. The emergence of BIM technology has changed this situation. BIM technology integrates the entire process from design, construction to operation, and the application of BIM technology at all stages helps to control the entire process cost more quickly and accurately.

In-depth Investigation of Project Planning and Control Software Package Application in the Construction Industry of Iran

Inefficient project planning and control have been identified as the main contributor to the reduced performance of the construction industry in Iran. Meanwhile, improper use of planning and control software packages (PPCSPs) in these projects can be a key factor in this reduced performance. This study investigates different aspects of the PPCSP applications to draw the role of PPCSPs in the planning and control processes of construction projects in the country using a survey-based method. It is found that only 32.5% of the construction companies in Iran highly or very highly use PPCSPs. The low level of skill and the lack of management support are two main contributing factors to this reduced PPCSP application. The quality of the academic and vocational project management training programs and the lack of dependable PPCSP technical support are argued as possible sources of the issue. The identified PPCSP pattern in Iran is compared with the results reported for several developed and in-transition countries. This comparison reveals that Iran and in-transition countries fall deeply behind in employing PPCSPs in their construction projects compared to the developed countries.

O Projeto Político Pedagógico numa perspectiva coletiva

Este artigo apresenta resultados de um estudo sobre processo de construção do Projeto Político-Pedagógico (PPP) realizado numa escola em Quixadá/Ce. Esse documento indica um caminho a ser seguido de forma explícita por uma escola. Objetivou-se investigar como ocorre a elaboração dessa política educacional, o PPP, diante do contexto educacional brasileiro que se lança nos últimos anos e qual sua conexão com a realidade escolar examinada. A metodologia adotada foi um estudo de caso, com fontes essenciais norteada pela pesquisa qualitativa na análise dos dados, foram utilizados como instrumento o questionário estruturado e o grupo focal, articulados com o quadro teórico disponível sobre o tema. Nessa pesquisa, dialogou-se com Ilma Passos Alencastro Veiga, principal teórico no aprofundamento da temática. Os resultados da investigação anunciam que o PPP tem conexão com a unidade escolar, mas para que seja efetivamente elaborado e/ou executado, com a participação integral da comunidade educativa, operando de forma democrática com o envolvimento dos diversos segmentos, de forma que venha contribuir para o trabalho pedagógico da unidade de ensino.

Development of Cost Estimation Models Based on ANN Ensembles and the SVM Method

Cost estimation, as one of the key processes in construction projects, provides the basis for a number of project-related decisions. This paper presents some results of studies on the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in cost estimation. The research developed three original models based either on ensembles of neural networks or on support vector machines for the cost prediction of the floor structural frames of buildings. According to the criteria of general metrics (<i>RMSE</i>, <i>MAPE</i>), the three models demonstrate similar predictive performance. <i>MAPE</i> values computed for the training and testing of the three developed models range between 5% and 6%. The accuracy of cost predictions given by the three developed models is acceptable for the cost estimates of the floor structural frames of buildings in the early design stage of the construction project. Analysis of error distribution revealed a degree of superiority for the model based on support vector machines.

Construction of Risk Evaluation Index System for Power Grid Engineering Cost by Applying WBS-RBS and Membership Degree Methods

Based on the perspective of cost risk management of the entire process of power grid construction project, the WBS-RBS risk identification method is applied. The risk factors of power grid engineering cost are comprehensively identified from the five major engineering cost formation stages: investment decision estimate stage, design estimate stage, bidding price stage, construction budget stage, and final account stage. Combined with the basic data obtained from the questionnaire, the membership degree method is adopted to screen the key indicators of the preliminary factors of cost risk and then eliminate the redundant indicators. Furthermore, a set of simple and efficient risk evaluation index system for power grid engineering cost is constructed in order to improve the risk evaluation and management level of power grid construction project in China.

Impact of critical factors within decision making process of public engagement and public consultation for construction projects – case studies

Public engagement and public consultation are increasingly applied to involve stakeholders in the decision making process of construction projects. However, it is difficult for multiple stakeholders to clearly identify common interests and make decisions about specific issues of construction projects within the current public engagement and consultation processes. Hence, this study aims to investigate the critical factors within decision making processes for public engagement and public consultation, and their impact on the final project outcomes. In order to achieve this, three case studies were conducted on different project types, including public residential housing, urban planning and civil engineering. The study reveals the systematic steps of the decision making process in both public engagement and public consultation over construction projects. Causal relationships between the critical decision steps and the final outcomes have been found, while the results also indicate that the adoption of public engagement is more appropriate for construction projects than public consultation. Therefore, numerous practical recommendations are given for facilitating the whole decision making process of public engagement and improving final outcomes, including the adoption of value management into the decision making process of public engagement. The findings of this study also form the basis for a further longitudinal study.

FACTORS MILITATING AGAINST EFFECTIVE BUILDING MATERIALS MANAGEMENT (EBMM) IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Building construction projects are carried out using various material resources. These materials have to be managed to enhance value, minimize waste and ensure that time and cost related goals are attained. The research looked at the factors militating against effective building materials management (EBMM) in order to identify major factors leading to material wastage in construction project delivery in the FCT Abuja, Nigeria. The study adopted purposive sampling method to distribute 100 copies of survey questionnaire to some selected professionals from both consulting and contracting firms in the study area. 86 copies of questionnaire retrieved were analyzed to know the implication of these factors on the process and delivery of construction projects. 25 identified factors militating against EBMM were ranked using RII. The finding of the study revealed that lack of compliance to materials specification and standards (RII=0.81), little knowledge on materials specifications and standards (RII=0.80), poor communication system (RII=0.79), were the top factors militating against materials management. The findings further indicate that delay and abandonment of project (RII=0.82), cost overrun (RII=0.81) and ineffective allocation of materials (RII=0.79), were the three major implications these will have on EBMM. The study concluded that for the EBMM, professional involved in building production processes should understand the importance of specifications and standards to avoid disastrous effects on building materials usage and management in the construction projects delivery.
