The problem of patriotism is especially alive in connection with the worldwide trend of creating a secular society. Having played a big role throughout the 19th and half of the 20th centuries, patriotism as a national manifestation of love for the Motherland loses its significance. A person no longer thinks about his nationality, he ceases to care about his own cultural heritage, the foundations of a person's worldview cease to be unshakable. The purpose of the work is to reveal the importance of patriotic and sports components for the educational process. To achieve the goal, the following tasks were set: To determine the meaning of the term “patriotism” and its difference from nationalism, to turn to the origins of patriotic education on the example of Russia, to identify a possible correlation of patriotism and religion, to trace the transmission of the spiritual culture of Orthodoxy, as the traditional religion of the Russian state, through patriotism. The scientific novelty of the work consists in considering the issue of sports and patriotic education in the light of Orthodox spirituality.

In the article, the problem of patriotism is considered as a meaningfully changing social phenomenon from the point of view of its nature and essence, which are not invariable. Special attention is paid to the fact that patriotism locked onto itself the unfulfilled hopes of social groups and strata of society, whose expectations turned out to be higher than its political and cultural capabilities. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that it speaks of the dependence of patriotism on a generational shift or generational change, since the emergence of a new capable subject of social action, possessing not only a post-material independent of the departed Soviet nature, but also a new idealized system of values, is capable of predetermining changes in patriotic sentiments in society. The paper argues that various interpretations of patriotism, despite its seeming naturalness and eternity, create the preconditions for the emergence of stereotyped chimerical constructions. It is noted that the traditionally form of patriotic fetishism is the institution of education, reduced to the logic of "service" – to the provision of educational services, built in accordance with a given vertical of values and priorities outlined by the state, within which patriotism is not brought up, but proclaimed. The Institute of Education, for which the frame of education of patriotism has ceased to be an organizing principle, is no longer stitched with strong temporary ties within the direct contact of generations, their semantic dialogue. As a result, patriotic education is poorly integrated into the educational process. Another consequence of this situation is the blindness of the institution of education in modern Russia in relation to generational shifts and their impact on social development. Today it is much more important for the Russian state (its political elite) to reproduce the form of patriotism at the level of official formulas, but not its literal meaning. The article is based on the principles of science, objectivity and creativity.

Ценности и смыслы: размышления о патриотизме

Presented is research in the problem of patriotism as socio-cultural phenomena. On theoretical level in the article presented are principal view points on value of patriotism. Shown are vectors of transformation of patriotism in connection with global social economic and political changes both in the world and Russia. Based on practical material, shown is, how concretely was being organized breeding space in the city of Nizhny Novgorod in particular as to celebration of 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic war. Also presented is positive experience of organization of partnership relation between all subjects of breeding process (family, school, public media, the system of additional education, public organizations, culture and leisure institutions, and etc.)

The Concept of Patriotism as Perceived by Teenagers in Latvia

Aim. The aim of the research is: theoretical investigation of the problem of patriotism and its urgency, the empirical research for defining the level of perception of the concept “patriotism” by teenagers in Latvia.
 Methodology of the research. The theoretical basis of the research includes theoretical analysis of various conceptual approaches to understanding of the phenomenon of patriotism in the philosophical aspect, as well as official documents of the European Union and the Republic of Latvia: documents of the Republic of Latvia (the preamble to the main law of the Latvian Republic – the Constitution; National Development Plan of Latvia for 2014-2020; Guidelines for the Development of Education for 2014-2020; Guidelines on national identity, civil society and integration policy 2012-2018); documents of international organisations (United Nations International Children’s Fund; European Commission; the EU Strategy for Youth – Investing and Empowering; Universal Declaration of Human Rights). The Empirical methods of the research: methods of data acquisition: a questionnaire (anonymous); methods of data processing and analysis: quantitative data processing with methods of mathematical analysis of statistical data and forecasting analytical methods in data processing software Microsoft Office Excel 2010 and SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 18.0 version; qualitative data processing (analysis of the content, coding and processing of the acquired data); interpretation of quantitative and qualitative.
 Results. The theoretical analysis makes it possible to conclude that the main idea of the concept patriotism consists in considering it as one of the highest values of the individual and is the basis of life orientations, defining the strategy of the individual’s development, harmonisation of the society and the state. The main approaches for investigation of the concept of patriotism are: sensitively emotional, active and publically national.

Patriotism between national identity of people and neoliberalism

The paper deals with the problem of patriotism as a national identity of peoples and neoliberalism, as increasingly present in developing countries as well as in other countries. Today's meaning of patriotism has largely darkened everyone's struggle against everyone, especially the world market. The emergence of multinational companies and the increasing presence of the imposition of certain conditions in many countries - in political, military, social, economic and every other spheres is more and more present. The authors in theory view this situation in our country as well, and then globally.They consider that patriotism, as an internal state or consciousness of a nation about itself, has been greatly altered in favor of so-called neoliberal capitalism, which enters into every country that permits it, or vice versa - by force of imposes different behavior. Neoliberalism is an old-fashioned approach to expressing a society that is trying to transfer its freemarket behavior to other countries, thus transforming one country or transforming it into a different-type colony with the help of the domestic political elite.

The spiritual power of person’s patriotism

The author defines patriotism as an unconditional and highly meaningful feeling-value, which characterizes the person’s attitude towards people, homeland, state and oneself. Unconditional aspect of patriotism means that the feeling of patriotism cannot be founded on external forms of encouragements. The highly semantic aspect of patriotism is not associated with the lower, existential needs, but with the highest life determinants of personality. According to a conceptual definition of patriotism, the author proposes the basic components that serve as diagnostic signals to determine its degree of development in a particular personality. A set of regulations, based on deep psychological mechanism, is practically significant for educators in order to organize the process of developing a feeling of patriotism. As a result, they are very effective in the educational process.

THE EXPRESSIONS OF CONTEMPORARY RUSSIAN PATRIOTISM

This article is about the problem of patriotism in contemporary Russian Federation. It is exceptionally a dangerous phenomenon. Russian society doesn’t see any problem with the evolution of it. We can see it in the way the government treat some problems, for example the case of LGBT rights. There are a lot of radical political parties. Their official programs become extremelly controversial. The author of the article tries to explain the problem of contemporary Russian patriotism. The problem of patriotic education in Russian pedagogical thought

The paper explains the importance of the problem of student patriotic education and emphasizes the need to create a culture of patriotic students. The concept of patriotism is a basic component in the formation of patriotic culture of students. Critical thinking scientific knowledge about patriotism, methods and techniques of education lead to an understanding that the system of activities in the field of patriotic education requires changes based on education of spiritual values and development of the concept of formation of student patriotic culture. A central element of patriotic education as the basis of patriotic culture is a philosophical theory of values. In modern state programs and documents it is indicated that patriotism is one of the enduring and ineradicable values. Education value and moral oriented personality, with a sense of patriotism, responsibility and other qualities is one of the main tasks of the state policy in the field of education at the present stage of society development. Students future citizens must be prepared to confront the global challenges of the modern era, they should be highly moral, creative, competent citizens who are aware of the responsibility for the present and the future of their country. Analysis of scientific pedagogical literature leads to the conclusion that the scientific community addresses the problem of patriotism in the historically urgent tasks of development of society in periods of social crisis. Scientists and public figures from different eras are unanimous in saying that patriotism is firstly love for the country and secondly the activity aimed at the goodness of the motherland, to the defense of its interests, willingness to serve the motherland.

“Geographical Morality”: Place and the Problem of Patriotism in John W. De Forest's Civil War Realism

John William De Forest's Miss Ravenel's Conversion from Secession to Loyalty was written from 1864 to 1867, when Reconstruction still had a chance of changing the face of American reality. It could be called the only U.S. realist novel that reports to us from within this moment of tremendous potential, an imaginative hiatus between the Civil War's derealization of the national culture and the post-Reconstruction emergence of a powerful nation-state. The novel foreshadows contemporary debates about cultural nationalism versus liberal, rights-based citizenship as it works through compelling counternarratives to constitutional patriotism, models of local attachment that De Forest recognizes as the political sensibility of “geographical morality.” Geographical morality implies allegiance to a prediscursive and so-called natural state whose limits are set by climate and human biology. Like Walt Whitman, who was also fascinated by the erotics of patriotism, De Forest explores the durability of local passions, of sectionalism and sex, in the face of constitutional idealism, the Unionism that became the hegemonic feeling-state decided by the Civil War. Through discussion of Miss Ravenel alongside Whitman's Specimen Days and De Forest's short fiction, essays, and later novels, this essay explores the larger question of how literature has attempted to make the “social passion” of patriotism available to the senses.

Confusion of Tongues: Christian Discipleship and the Problem of Patriotism

This article addresses the dynamics of faith manifested in Christian discipleship and patriotism. Exploration of the dynamics of faith, whether in Christian or patriotic discipleship, involves identifying the nature of the object of devotion and concomitant expectations of one’s relationship vis-a-vis the object. From this exploration, various contradictions between Christian and patriotic discipleship are identified. To resolve cognitive dissonance or smooth over contradictions, Christian patriots employ several psychosocial strategies, namely, merger, weak dissociation, rationalization, and denial.

The Problem of Patriotism: A Psychoanalytic and Theological Analysis

In this article, I examine patriotism from psychoanalytic and theological perspectives, arguing that it is a deeply problematic form of love and devotion. After providing a brief overview of the discourse vis-a-vis patriotism, I depict the characteristics of a dominant form of patriotism (self-state) in the U.S. Given this, I argue that, while patriotism has a variety of forms, the most prevalent form tends toward tragic consequences and it is this tragic tendency that I depict from psychoanalytic and theological perspectives. From a psychoanalytic perspective, the extant form of patriotism in the U.S. represents a self-state that signifies an idealized, omnipotent, and imaginary identification, which is accompanied by and contingent upon a devaluation of the Other. Moreover, the dominant form of patriotic self-states is secured by weak dissociation, omnipotent thinking and, in most cases, a collapse of the symbolic equation. From a Christian theological perspective, patriotism signifies absolutizing the relative and contingent. This form of idolatry manifests a distortion of reason and will, which contributes to corrupted and corrupting forms of love and devotion.

Utility and Impartiality: Being Impartial in a Partial World

This article proposes an eclectic and holistic model of ethics and ethical thinking. It uses this tripart model to show how partialities can be integrated into impartial moral reasoning. Ethical reasoning is divided into three problem areas or “levels”—cases, frameworks, and ultimate ethical goals. Each level employs its own form of reasoning. For evaluating cases, the author advocates an eclectic application of principles; for evaluating frameworks of principles, the author advocates contractualism; for evaluating ethical theory as a whole, the author advocates a notion of the human good inspired by Aristotelian perfectionism. This article argues that utilitarianism, which is one part of eclectic deliberation, is hampered by the idea that ethical reasoning must be based on a single moral criterion or “master” principle. The article concludes by showing how this eclectic model, supplemented by “mitigated impartialism,” provides a systematic method for assessing partialities, with reference to the problem of patriotism in journalism.
