The problem of patriotism is especially alive in connection with the worldwide trend of creating a secular society. Having played a big role throughout the 19th and half of the 20th centuries, patriotism as a national manifestation of love for the Motherland loses its significance. A person no longer thinks about his nationality, he ceases to care about his own cultural heritage, the foundations of a person's worldview cease to be unshakable. The purpose of the work is to reveal the importance of patriotic and sports components for the educational process. To achieve the goal, the following tasks were set: To determine the meaning of the term “patriotism” and its difference from nationalism, to turn to the origins of patriotic education on the example of Russia, to identify a possible correlation of patriotism and religion, to trace the transmission of the spiritual culture of Orthodoxy, as the traditional religion of the Russian state, through patriotism. The scientific novelty of the work consists in considering the issue of sports and patriotic education in the light of Orthodox spirituality.
