THE INFLUENCE OF INTERACTION FACTORS IN CROSS-CULTURAL ADJUSTMENT AMONG INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN A PRIVATE HIGHER EDUCATION LEARNING INSTITUTION

Adjustment process is needed in a new living environment in a new host culture and is a prerequisite for any international student when studying abroad. In addition, successful adaptation to the new host culture by international students can be achieved by getting good emotional and physical support, coupled with deep understanding from family members. This study aims to understand the interaction adjustment process among international students in a private higher learning institution. We had identified and collected relevant data from two faculties in Kolej Universiti Islam Perlis. A total of 5 respondents were selected and interviewed, and the selection process was made through a snowball sampling technique. Two main themes, local accent and communication in the English Language, were developed for this study. This study provides a discussion of the main findings from the research and where applicable, links the works of literature to the research outcomes. The study outcomes can also be used as a guideline in the adjustment process for international students. Universities can also make references to this study in helping international students adapt to a new host’s culture, especially in terms of interaction adjustment, by providing appropriate pieces of training and guidelines.

The establishment of waqf funds in institutions of higher learning is increasingly being developed by many public and private institutions of higher learning throughout the country. The phenomenon of the establishment of waqf funds has triggered great innovations in the development of waqf in the country. It is in line with the launch of the UniTP Purple Book Guidelines that has been enforced for use in October 2016 by the Ministry of Higher Education to develop their respective endowment management centers to generate income. In this regard, UiTM Perlis Branch took the initiative to establish the UiTM Perlis Knowledge Endowment Fund (DWIPs). Thus, this study examined the issues and challenges faced by DWIPs in helping the income generation of higher learnings institutions. This study used a qualitative method with a case study at UiTM Perlis Branch. The experience of the authors and fellow authors who led DWIPs from the beginning of the establishment to the present were analyzed and described descriptively and comparatively. The findings of the study found that there are four issues and challenges, which are lack of understanding and public awareness of waqf, management bureaucracy problems, lack of energy resources in the management of DWIPs as well as legal and financial barriers. The results of this study are intended to help spread awareness of DWIPs among the staff and gain attention from the university management. In relation to that, it can also increase the amount of knowledge endowment fund collection and benefit all UiTM Perlis Branch staff.

Analyzing Work Stress, Job Satisfaction and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Case of Private Higher Learning Institution in Kuala Lumpur

University colleges in Malaysia have to look for new ways to conduct their businesses to be competitive because of high competition from local and international higher education institutions, ever-changing business environments, shifting preferences in the education market, government requirements, and advancements in global technology. The search for and implementation of new methods, on the other hand, imposed a strain on the workforce. This tension may create stress, affect job satisfaction and citizenship behavior. Hence, a research was carried out to see if stress, satisfaction, and organizational citizenship behavior are linked. The study selected one of the college universities in Malaysia, UCA, and obtained 226 data from both academic and administrative workers. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression techniques. Results showed that work stress influenced job satisfaction. Furthermore, job satisfaction also affected organizational citizenship behavior. The study is critical because it could assist management in developing intervention programs that will result in not just stronger human capital but also a good attitude towards UCA.

The Impact of E-Learning Instructional Knowledge on Pedagogical Attitude and Learner Performance

This study was aimed at investigating the impact of lecturers' level of knowledge and skills of e-learning, pedagogical attitude, and learners' performance in South African private institutions of higher learning by applying the ends-means relationship conventional leadership and supervision model. The intention was to solve challenges associated with the implementation of e-learning programs in South African higher schools of learning. The study applied an explanatory research design in the form of the mixed method (quant-qual). The results indicated that the lecturers' level of knowledge and skills, as well as pedagogical attitude in the aspects of e-learning components, were low. This is one of the reasons why e-learning is having a negative impact on the quality of teaching and learning. It is therefore recommended that lecturers get involved in e-learning innovation programs regarding policymaking and implementation in order to acquire enhanced e-pedagogical skills.

This exploratory study investigates the influence of leadership communication on staff members’ job satisfaction at a private institution of higher learning in Malaysia, in a multicultural setting. The turnover rate among academics in Malaysia is increasing extensively and leadership communication was identified as one of the factors that contribute to poor job satisfaction at the workplace. Good leadership communication is able to create trust and understanding that would inspire people towards the goals of the organization and improve job satisfaction of an organization’s staff members. Theoretically, transformational leadership theory discusses that a leader with effective leadership communication skills could contribute to a positive working culture or environment that motivates staff members to progress in their career. However, it was found that leadership communication between leaders and subordinates was not fully explored in a multicultural perspective. A qualitative methodology was utilized in order to gain insights into the influence of leadership communication on job satisfaction from selected academics’ perspectives. Data were collected through a series of intensive interviews with 22 informants. Based on the findings, three themes emerged; leadership communication practices, the expectation towards leadership communication, and staff members’ feedback towards leadership communication. The findings of this study contribute to a new dimension of leadership communication from a multi-cultural context, specifically from the context of academicians at higher learning institutes. Furthermore, it was discovered that leadership communication affected job satisfaction among academic staffs. A good leadership communication is able to create a positive environment for effective communication among staff members in the organization. Level of Learning Style and Level of Students’ Critical Thinking at Private Higher Learning Institutions

Students who study at a higher learning institutions have been independent in acquiring knowledge delivered by lecturers. This is closely related to the learning style of a student. Learning style plays an important role in determining the level of understanding of a student in a certain field in a certain university. This is due to the accurate learning style, it can identify the suitable method and strategy used in achieving a successful academic level. The objective of this research is to identify the learning style of students. Besides that, it is also to identify whether there is significant difference in the students’ learning styles according to gender. Other than that, it is to identify the relationship of students’ learning style towards students’ critical thinking. The findings in this research showed positive signs in the effort in enhancing students’ learning ability in innovation where it needs students to have creative and critical thinking. The comparison towards critical thinking based on students’ gender showed that there is no significant difference of the level of critical thinking between male and female students. This means the critical thinking between male and female students are similar which is high.

Predicting continuance intention toward e-campus usage: Does satisfaction play a role?

The aim of this research is to explore the role of satisfaction on user continuance intention to use e-campus. Using a validated questionnaire derived from the previous literature, data was collected from 315 undergraduate and post graduate students from private higher learning institution in Malaysia. Empirically, this study confirms the relationship between satisfactions on user continuance intention to use e-campus. Implication for system providers is further discussed.

Measurement model for e-campus acceptance: A study in semi-private higher institutions in Malaysia

Previous efforts to validate instruments to measure constructs related to technology acceptance have been very successful. However, little is known of its validity in private higher learning institution especially in religious based institution. We present an established and validated instrument to be revalidated in religious based higher learning institution. The scale involved in this validation study is technical proficiency, computer anxiety, satisfaction and innovativeness. Findings indicates that all subscale demonstrated adequate reliability and validity. Implications for future research are discussed.

Understanding the effects of system quality on continuance intention to use student’s information system management: An empirical evidence from Malaysia

This paper examines the role of system quality on continuance intention to use e-campus. The scale used in this study is adapted from previously validated instrument derive from the relevant literature. using a paper-and-pencil self-administered questionnaire survey, data was collected from 315 undergraduate and post graduate students from private higher learning institution in East Coast Malaysia. The results suggest that users’ continuance intention to use e-campus is determined by system quality. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Learning by Doing: Distance Learning

The physical classroom learning nowadays is no longer applicable for the current younger generations. Internet and distance learning which is generally known as online education plays a vital roles in the country’s education system. It is undeniable that online education provides ample of benefits to young learners. Nevertheless, there are also many negative implications from online education. Limited collaborative learning, increase in time and effort are the several negative implications from online education. This study examines the implications of online education among students especially in a private higher learning institution and its effect towards Malaysian national education system. Information has been collected through surveys, interviews and together with secondary data, and were seen using SPSS. The studies found that there are various serious issues regarding online education and on its effect on the quality of Malaysian Education System to certain extend. Several problems have been identified and these issues have to be solved in order to sustain the quality of education for future generations. Furthermore, Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) should formulate a standard policy, monitor closely the implementation of online education, evaluate and review the method used in teaching and upgrade to maintain the quality of online education in private higher education institution.

Compensation Practices on Job Satisfaction of Faculty Members in Private HEI in Saudi Arabia: Mediating Role of Talent Management

Purpose- The paper examined the role of compensation practices on job satisfaction of faculty members in private institutions of higher learning in Saudi Arabia. The paper also examined the mediating role of talent management in the relationship between compensation practices and job performance.Methodology/Approach- A descriptive research design method was applied in the study. The paper is focused on review of previous studies from online data bases and periodicals on the paper variables and resultant relationships. Literature acknowledged the effect of compensation practices on job satisfaction. The paper explained the importance of compensation practices on job satisfaction and the mediating role of talent management. Equity theory was used as the underpinning theory of this paper.Findings- The paper found that compensation practice mediated by talent management is important to increase job satisfaction of faculty members of newly established private institutions of higher learning particularly in Saudi Arabia.Implication/Contribution- The paper provides opportunity for scholars to test the proposed framework empirically. The paper can serve as guide for human resource personnel in newly established private institutions of learning in increasing faculty member’s job satisfactions. The paper adds to body of existing literature on compensation practices, job satisfaction and talent management with focus on newly established private institution of learning in Saudi Arabia.

Assessment of Students Support Services Centre Approach to Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment of Substance Abuse Management in a Private Institution of Higher Learning

Substance abuse among young adults is a major public health issue which can cause significant damage to their mental health. The screening, brief, interventions and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a public health prevention tool used in identifying persons at risk of substance use and abuse. This study assessed the approach to screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment of substance abuse management in a higher institution of learning. The study adopted a qualitative key informant’s interviewer assessment method. Key informants from the Student Support Service (SSS) Centre were interviewed to assess the SBIRT management approach of substance abuse in a university setting. The interview guide had a total of 5 themes with 8 questions and 14 follow-up questions. Interviews and observation of key informants was used to obtain research information. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. This study revealed that the study population utilized reliable drug tests, students’ performance, behavior and appearance of the students as an approach to screening students for substance abuse. Management was dependent on level of risk of the student determined from the screening process. Substance use disorders varying from moderate to high risk were given counselling therapy; patients with severe risk dependency were referred to specialty treatment (rehabilitation) for further treatment. The SBIRT approach in the treatment of students at risk of substance abuse have been found to be useful. There are however challenges with students complying to treatment which needs to be addressed.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF E-LEARNING AMONG PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN SARAWAK, MALAYSIA

<p>E-learning is playing very important role in the present educational scenario. It has potential to change the whole education system and due to this reason, it has become one of the most preferred subjects for the researchers and scholars working on the various aspects of e-learning. This study is looking into various research works on e-learning for IPTS (Private Institutions of Higher Learning) in Sarawak. The principle objectives of this research includes to examine the suitable research model describing on the methods that shows the motivation in e-learning, (ii) to identify the suitable type of learning in higher education and (iii) to investigate the problems and challenges of implementing e-learning in Private Institute of Higher Learning Sarawak. This study therefore examined the prime factors of two selected IPTS in Sarawak (Saujana Academy of Travel and Tour (SATT) and IBS College (formerly known as Institute BREM Sarawak) in implementing an E-learning and the relations between each influencing factors of acceptance in E-Learning in the University/Colleges by adopting the two basic types of learning which were Computer Based Learning and Internet Based Learning as proposed by Algahtani, 2011. The resulting analysis and interpretation provided a description of the performance of E-Learning influenced by the variables which were the engagement of E-Learning, facilities and computer literacy. The qualitative method in this study derived from a constructive perspective involving in-depth face to face interview with the respondents. The outcome of this study depicted that the influence of internet connectivity and computer-based knowledge equipped the E-Learning implementation and discovered of the advantages and disadvantages of E-Learning in education industry. Effects of Enterprise Resource Planning System Navigation on Academic Service Delivery at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya

The ERP system has for long been adopted in private higher learning institution and has had a significant impact on finance and accounts management, examinations management, hostels and accommodation, library management, procurement and stores management and catering management. The implementation of the ERP System in Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology since 2012 has been characterized by dissatisfaction from both students and lecturers especially in form of service delays due to faulty queuing systems or network delays. This has led to poor institutional performance, on this basis the study examined usability of enterprise resource planning system on academic service delivery in Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. To evaluate how navigation as an ERP system usability factor affect academic service delivery at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. The study was guided by: systems theory; resource-based theory and SERQUAL model. A descriptive case study design was used. The target population was 10 heads of department, 37 technical personnel and 5179 students totaling to 5226 respondents. Questionnaire was used for data collection instrument. Stratified random sampling and purposive technique was used. Navigation affects the usability of the enterprise resource planning system on academic service delivery. It shows that ERP-Navigation should be designed to be user-friendly, which means that it can be easily customized for any type of business or company.

AN INVESTIGATION OF INSTITUTIONAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE DECREASE OF STUDENT ENROLLMENTS IN SELECTED PRIVATE HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS IN RWANDA

This study adds on the available literature on higher education with regard to student enrollments. The purpose of the study was to find out institutional factors influencing the decrease of student enrollments in 6 selected private higher learning institutions in Rwanda. This study adopted a quantitative research design. The study used a sample of 370 undergraduate students that were selected using stratified sampling technique. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire in the form of likert scales. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentages, frequencies, means and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (simple linear regression). The findings revealed that institutional factors have a significant influence on the decrease of student enrollments in private higher learning institutions in Rwanda. Seven institutional factors were found to be the most influencing. These are namely: (1) inflexible and unmarketable programs, (2) high costs, (3) inflexible payment modalities, (4) students’ poor living conditions, (5) poor internet connection, (6) institutional bad location and (7) inflexible academic rules and regulations. The study recommended that managers of private higher learning institutions in Rwanda should be aware of the factors influencing the decrease of student enrollments and devise sound strategies to improve on them. The study also recommended that managers of these institutions should make sure that a survey on students’ satisfaction level is conducted regularly in order to identify the students’ problems and solve them accordingly. The Influence of Organizational Learning on Work Performance among Academic Staffs in Private Higher Learning Institutions

The success or failure of universities are very much dependent on the contribution and involvement of its academics. In fact, in the era of globalization, many universities, may it be public or private learning institutions are not only required to produce quality human capital but also to provide training to the graduates in meeting the market demand. They need to focus on infusing values that are beneficial industrially and to the society at large. Previous studies evident that organizational learning is one of the important aspects of organizational factors that can direct the behavior and attitudes of the employees to improve their work performance. It may act as a catalyst to influence performance of organizations too. In order to remain relevant and competitive, universities need to focus on continuous learning and use of knowledge, which can serve as a critical key to success for facilitating individuals and team in any organizations. However, an overriding question is: to what extent organization learning are observed in most universities in Malaysia? Therefore, this study was intended to investigate the relationship between organizational learning and work performance of the academic staff in higher learning institutions. There were about 122 academic staff from a few selected higher learning intuitions, participated in this study. The result indicated that majority of the academic staff felt that their level of work performance was high, particularly on task and contextual performance. Interestingly, the respondents perceived that their universities practice high level of organizational learning, particularly on the aspects of system perspective and openness and experimentation. The finding also revealed that there was a moderate relationship between organizational learning and work performance. The multiple regression models were successful in indicating that the predictor variable accounted for 9.1% of the explained adjusted variance in work performance. The discussion addresses practical implication and future research direction.

Improving Creativity of Product Designed by Engineering Undergraduates in Malaysia by Creative Thinking Skills Module

This research paper presents the outcome of a research conducted to assess and determine the effects of Creative Thinking Skills for Conceptual Engineering Design Module administered to engineering undergraduates at a private institution of higher learning. The Creative Thinking Skills Module features few proposed creative thinking tools such as Brain Sketching, Mind Maps and Morphological Analysis. The creativity of the product designed by engineering undergraduates was evaluated using revised Creative Solution Diagnosis Scale with 24 indicators. Preliminary Exploration of Professional Development Instrument for Lecturers in Malaysia

Professional development is crucial for organization’s success to improve teaching-learning programs at higher learning education institutions. Many countries have developed various programs for lecturer training and development. However, there are barriers preventing them from taking the opportunities, especially finding the right time and the appropriate programs. This study explored the construct of lecturers’ professional development in teaching and learning after attending various trainings and workshops. The main objective of this study is to identify the underlying factor of the instrument based on Kirkpatrick’s Four Level Evaluation Framework namely reaction, learning, behaviour, and results. Using an 18-item instrument developed for an explorative inquiry, the present study measured and analysed responses from 100 higher education lecturers from randomly selected Public Higher Learning Institution, Private Higher Learning Institution, and Malaysia Technical University Network. Applying Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to identify the underlying dimensions of the instrument, this study suggested that lecturer’s professional development in teaching and learning is a one-dimension construct consisting of integrated dimensions of knowledge enhancement, knowledge relevancy, skills improvement, and skills practice.
