Lignin, sugar, and furan production of industrial hemp biomass via an integrated process

Traditional pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is often accompanied by washing and disposal of wastewater, which leads to overuse of water and loss of by-products. The objectives of this study were to validate the potential of an acid-base integrated process for simultaneous sugars, furans, and lignin production without washing and wastewater discarding. The difference in conversion performance among different biomass resources was also demonstrated. Parallel acetic acid (HOAc, pH = 2.25) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH, pH = 13.46) pretreatments followed by solid and liquid integration were applied to four genotypes of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) biomass that were harvested from two planting locations (Haysville and Manhattan, KS). Results showed that genotype, planting location, and their interaction had notable influences on biomass composition and its conversion to bioproducts but exhibited different trends. Glucan content of biomass from Haysville, ranging from 47.29 to 50.05%, were higher than those of 42.49–48.38 % from Manhattan with the lowest being Vega (Manhattan) and the highest being Hlukouskii (Haysville). Xylan and lignin contents in all the hemp genotypes were 11.70–13.88 % and 10.45–15.14 %, respectively. The integration process effectively rendered the pH of the integrated filtrate and slurry to approximately 4.80. The highest lignin recovery of 73.13 g/kg biomass was achieved by Rigel from Manhattan. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization showed that only lignin derived from Vega (Haysville) and Anka (Manhattan) was comparable to the commercial alkali lignin. Retaining monosaccharides (2.24–3.81 g/L) enhanced sugar concentrations (glucose: 40.40–45.71 g/L; xylose: 7.09–8.88 g/L) and conversion efficiencies (glucose: 71.19–77.71 %; xylose: 45.42–52.03 %). Besides, furans including 0.79–1.25 g/L of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and 0.99–1.59 g/L of furfural coupling with 1.96–2.95 % and 10.00–14.65 % conversion efficiencies, respectively, were obtained in the final hydrolysate. Biomass from Haysville produced relatively higher glucose concentrations than those from Manhattan. Based on mass balance, the most productive genotype was Rigel. This study offers essential information to reduce water and chemical overconsumption and to understand the effects of genotype and planting location on biomass valorization.

Enzymatic Pretreatment with Laccases from Lentinus sajor-caju Induces Structural Modification in Lignin and Enhances the Digestibility of Tropical Forage Grass (Panicum maximum) Grown under Future Climate Conditions.

Since laccase acts specifically in lignin, the major contributor to biomass recalcitrance, this biocatalyst represents an important alternative to the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Therefore, this study investigates the laccase pretreatment and climate change effects on the hydrolytic performance of Panicum maximum. Through a Trop-T-FACE system, P. maximum grew under current (Control (C)) and future climate conditions: elevated temperature (2 °C more than the ambient canopy temperature) combined with elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration(600 μmol mol−1), name as eT+eC. Pretreatment using a laccase-rich crude extract from Lentinus sajor caju was optimized through statistical strategies, resulting in an increase in the sugar yield of P. maximum biomass (up to 57%) comparing to non-treated biomass and enabling hydrolysis at higher solid loading, achieving up to 26 g L−1. These increments are related to lignin removal (up to 46%) and lignin hydrophilization catalyzed by laccase. Results from SEM, CLSM, FTIR, and GC-MS supported the laccase-catalyzed lignin removal. Moreover, laccase mitigates climate effects, and no significant differences in hydrolytic potential were found between C and eT+eC groups. This study shows that crude laccase pretreatment is a potential and sustainable method for biorefinery solutions and helped establish P. maximum as a promising energy crop.

Liquid Hot Water Pretreatment of Lignocellulosic Biomass at Lab and Pilot Scale

Liquid hot water pretreatment is considered to be a promising method for increasing biomass digestibility due to the moderate operational conditions without chemical additions. A necessary step towards the scalability of this pretreatment process is performing pilot plant trials. Upscaling was evaluated with a scaling factor of 500, by using 50 mL in the laboratory and 25 L in a pilot plant batch reactor. Pretreatment times were varied from 30 to 240 min, and temperatures used were 180–188 °C, while applying similar heating profiles at both scales. The initial mass fraction of poplar wood chips ranged from 10% to 16%. Liquid hot water pretreatment at laboratory and pilot scale led to analogous results. The acetic acid analysis of the liquid and solid fractions obtained after pretreatment indicated that complete deacetylation of poplar biomass can be achieved.

Effects of different pelleting technologies and parameters on pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass

Densification of lignocellulosic biomass is beneficial for its logistics, and in some situations, also for its application in biorefineries. In this study, industrial pellets and laboratory-made pellets produced at different die temperatures (90, 125 °C) from wheat straw, beech, and pine were pretreated (by dilute acid and alkali) and enzymatically hydrolyzed to study the effects of pelleting on pretreatment and sugar yield. The results showed that industrial pelleting positively affected sugar yield of the three biomasses for both acid and alkaline pretreatments, while laboratory pelleting affected sugar yield differently related to pretreatment types and biomass species. Pelleting disturbed biomass cell wall structure and affected the stability of hemicellulose and β-O-4′ linkages in lignin. The extent of hemicellulose solubility during acid pretreatment and the amount of lignin β-O-4′ ether linkages present in acid pretreated substrates could serve as indicators of the effect of pelleting on sugar yield. The structural modifications caused by pelleting and their effects on the enzymatic sugar yield correlate tightly to pelleting technology, pretreatment method, and biomass species. The discrepant effects between industrial and laboratory pelleting on sugar yield observed in this study should be considered when designing future studies.

Co-cultivation of a novel Fusarium striatum strain and a xylose consuming Saccharomyces cerevisiae yields an efficient process for simultaneous detoxification and fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates

Furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) are furan derivatives commonly generated during the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass and often considered among the most inhibitory compounds towards the sugar fermenting strains due to their acute toxicity and high concentrations. The present study describes the simultaneous detoxification and fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates containing high concentrations of FF and HMF by a co-culture of a novel Fusarium striatum strain and a xylose consuming Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain. The process demonstrates a superior performance than those previously described in the literature, as FF and HMF were efficiently transformed into their less toxic added-value alcohol derivatives by F. striatum with high yields (99% and 86%, respectively) and the higher detoxification rates reported (0.56 g/L/h and 0.13 g/L/h, respectively). There was no sugar consumption by the filamentous fungus during the detoxification process, rendering it available for ethanol fermentation by S. cerevisiae, which started immediately after the detoxification of the inhibitors. Ethanol productivities were significantly higher when increasing the inoculum size of F. striatum, confirming its potential for the detoxification of the lignocellulosic hydrolysate. High ethanol yields (0.4 g/g) and productivities (0.46 g/L/h) were obtained in a bench-scale bioreactor (1.5 L) in the presence of 3.5 g/L HMF and 2.5 g/L FF, a concentration of furan derivatives that completely inhibited the fermentation process in the absence of F. striatum. The presented process allows access to lignocellulosic materials and pretreatment methods that result in high concentrations of FF and HMF that are currently not feasible, representing a significant advance for the lignocellulosic ethanol industry.

An aptly industrialized bioprocess for lactic acid production from corn stover using thermotolerant microbial consortia.

Chemical pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is a critical step in the conversion of lignocellulose to biofuels and biochemical. The main drawback of this pretreatment process is the formation of inhibitors which exhibit combined toxicity to microorganisms and result to low product concentrations and yields. In this study, the selection of microbial consortia by enrichment on hydrolysate of H2SO4-pretreated corn stover (pre-CS) without detoxification has been investigated as an efficient way to develop new strategies for lignocellulose utilization. The analysis of cattle stomach-dervied microbial consortia domesticated to degrade hydrolysate of pre-CS to produce lactic acid (LA) at different temperatures was investigated. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analyses indicated that the three microbial consortia were taxonomically distinct and Enterococcus became dominant at high temperature. The highest glucose consumption rate was observed at 45°C, while the three microbial consortia showed similar consumption rates of xylose and arabinose. The selected microbial consortia DUT37, DUT45 and DUT47 showed preferable resistances to inhibitors in hydrolysate of pre-CS and abilities of xylose utilization. A batch simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process was developed by microbial consortium DUT47 at 47°C to produce LA from pre-CS under non-detoxified and non-sterile conditions. The LA concentration and yield were 43.73g/L and 0.50g/g-corn stover (CS), respectively. Microbial consortium DUT47 has been shown to be suitable for LA production from H2SO4-pretreated corn stover without detoxification due to its thermophilic growth characteristics, robust tolerance of inhibitors, and the simultaneous utilization of glucose and xylose.

Bioconversion of renewable lignocellulosic biomass into multicomponent substrate via pressurized hot water pretreatment for bioplastic polyhydroxyalkanoate accumulation

The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass (LB) has become an important process to reduce the cost of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production. In this study, an economical and effective pressurized hot water pretreatment was used to investigate on bioconversion of four typical LB (rubber wood, sugarcane bagasse, sorghum stalk, cassava stalk) into reducing sugar, then as feedstock to accumulate PHA by mixed microbial cultures. The results showed that pretreatment changed the surface morphology of LB and further improved saccharification efficiency. The maximum reducing sugar yield of 620.7 mg·g−1 (438.7 mg·g−1 glucose and 178.0 mg·g−1 xylose) was obtained by rubber wood. The conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose reached 83.10% and 78.22%. Moreover, PHA content reached the maximum of 773.2 mg COD·L−1 in the operation cycle of 24 h. The results demonstrated that hot water pretreatment was an effective physical process to improve the saccharification efficiency of LB for reducing the cost of PHA.

Effect of dewaxing on saccharification and ethanol production from different lignocellulosic biomass

Dewaxing effects on the pretreatment, saccharification and fermentation are rarely reported due to the low abundance of wax in lignocellulose. This study aimed to investigate the effect of wax removal on saccharification and ethanol yield from lignocellulose by using Rice straw (RS), Napier grass (NG), and sugarcane bagasse (SB). The wax contents of 0.56%, 1.7%, and 0.6% were obtained from RS, NG and SB after the wax extraction, respectively. The alkaline pretreatment was applied in combination with dewaxing to decipher the synergistic effect of these treatments. Dewaxing and alkaline pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass showed changes in the plant compositions. Removal of wax from RS, NG and SB showed significant changes in the surface morphology and functional groups. A higher yield of sugars and ethanol was observed in dewaxed and alkaline pretreated samples. The ethanol yields of 75.4%, 89.85%, and 74% from RS, NG, and SB were obtained after fermentation, respectively.

Acid-based lignocellulosic biomass biorefinery for bioenergy production: Advantages, application constraints, and perspectives

The production of chemicals and fuels from renewable biomass with the primary aim of reducing carbon footprints has recently become one of the central points of interest. The use of lignocellulosic biomass for energy production is believed to meet the main criteria of maximizing the available global energy source and minimizing pollutant emissions. However, before usage in bioenergy production, lignocellulosic biomass needs to undergo several processes, among which biomass pretreatment plays an important role in the yield, productivity, and quality of the products. Acid-based pretreatment, one of the existing methods applied for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment, has several advantages, such as short operating time and high efficiency. A thorough analysis of the characteristics of acid-based biomass pretreatment is presented in this review. The environmental concerns and future challenges involved in using acid pretreatment methods are discussed in detail to achieve clean and sustainable bioenergy production. The application of acid to biomass pretreatment is considered an effective process for biorefineries that aim to optimize the production of desired products while minimizing the by-products.

Beneficial and detrimental effects of choline chloride-oxalic acid deep eutectic solvent on biogas production.

Deep eutectic solvents (DES), a new class of alternative solvents, have recently been used in the pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Due to the ability to dissolve phenolic compounds, they have been efficiently applied as delignification agents. However, to extend DES application to bioprocesses, such as Anaerobic Digestion (AD), their toxicity to microbial consortia must be evaluated. In this work, an effective delignifying DES, composed of choline chloride (ChCl) and oxalic acid (OA) (1:1) was prepared and its effect evaluated, for the first time, in biogas production. Results show that the presence of DES had both beneficial and detrimental effects on the anaerobic consortium, depending on its concentration. In the concentration range of 0.3-12.5g/L, the presence of DES led to a lag-phase of 1 to 8 d as the DES concentration increased. However, after the lag-phase has been surpassed, DES up to a concentration of 12.5g/L improved the biogas production, reaching an accumulated biogas volume three times higher than the control assay for the concentration of 12.5g/L. For the highest DES concentrations (19.8-78.1g/L), the biogas production was inhibited. The assays performed with DES components alone have indicated that OA at 3.2g/L was the main responsible for the inhibition of biogas production (50% less biogas produced than the control). ChCl at 4.9g/L has not presented a lag-phase and produced an accumulated biogas volume like the control assay (1200mL for 30 d incubation). This work points out that ChCl:OA DES may be used in the delignification of biomass further submitted to AD, provided the inhibitory concentrations of OA are not achieved.

Hydrothermal pretreatment technologies for lignocellulosic biomass: A review of steam explosion and subcritical water hydrolysis

The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass enhances the conversion efficiency to produce biofuels and value-added chemicals, which have the potential to replace fossil fuels. Compared to physicochemical and other pretreatment techniques, the hydrothermal methods are considered eco-friendly and cost-effective. This paper reviews the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of steam explosion and subcritical water hydrolysis as the two promising hydrothermal technologies for the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Although the principle of the steam explosion in depolymerizing the lignin and exposing the cellulose fibers for bioconversion to liquid fuels is well known, its underlying mechanism for solid biofuel production is less identified. Therefore, this review provides an insight into different operating conditions of steam explosion and subcritical water hydrolysis for a wide variety of feedstocks. The mechanisms of subcritical water hydrolysis including dehydration, decarboxylation and carbonization of waste biomass are comprehensively described. Finally, the role of microwave heating in the hydrothermal pretreatment of biomass is elucidated.

Differential effects of inorganic salts on cellulase kinetics in enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and lignocellulosic biomass.

Inorganic salt pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass has proven to be an efficient way to increase the efficiency of enzymatic saccharification. However, it is not clear that this improvement is the result of modification of the lignocellulosic substrate after pretreatment, or removal of inhibitor, or enhancement of cellulase or a combination of these events. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the effects of inorganic salts on kinetics of cellulase enzymes (celluclast 1.5L and accellerase 1500). Two substrates rich in cellulose content [carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), avicel (AV)] and lignocellulose substrate [sugarcane bagasse (SB)] were considered. The enzymatic saccharification was carried with and without the addition of inorganic salts (NaCl and KCl) at 0.5M and 1.0M concentration. The kinetic parameters, Km and Vm, were determined to mechanically understand the pattern of inhibition and enhancement of inorganic salts on enzymatic saccharification. The kinetics parameters of celluclast 1.5L and accellerase 1500 for hydrolysis of CMC and AV with NaCl showed uncompetitive inhibition. Whereas, influences of KCl on both cellulase were differentiated to function in inhibition or enhancement modes when challenged with different substrates. On the other hand, enzymatic hydrolysis efficiencies of SB using both cellulases were enhanced under addition of NaCl and KCl, by increasing Vm of celluclast 1.5L from 0.303 to 0.635mg/mLmin (0.5M KCl) and accellerase 1500 from 0.383 to 0.719mg/mLmin (1.0M NaCl). The details of kinetic analysis in this work revealed the mechanism of inorganic salts on cellulase kinetics to be involved in substrate modification and removal of inhibitor.

Ligninolytic valorization of agricultural residues by Aspergillus nomius and Trichoderma harzianum isolated from gut and comb of Odontotermes obesus (Termitidae)

Fungi produce enzymes that degrade the complex lignin thereby enabling the efficient utilization of plant lignocellulosic biomass in the production of biofuel and cellulose-based products. In the present study, the agricultural residues such as paddy straw, sugarcane bagasse, and coconut husk were used as substrates for the biodegradation by Aspergillus nomius (MN700028) and Trichoderma harzianum (MN700029) isolated from gut of the termite, Odontotermes obesus and fungus comb in the termite mound, respectively. The influence of varying concentrations of different carbon sources, pH, and temperature on ligninolytic enzyme production was examined under laboratory conditions. The highest activities of manganese peroxidase (0.24 U/mL), lignin peroxidase (10.38 U/mL) and laccase (0.05 U/mL) were observed under studied conditions. Fungal pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for 45 days showed that A. nomius and T. harzianum degraded 84.4% and 81.66% of hemicelluloses, 8.16% and 93.75% of cellulose, and 52.59% and 65% of lignin, respectively. The interaction of pH, temperature, and different carbon sources with fungal biomass and enzyme production was found significant (p ≤ 0.05). SEM analysis indicated alterations in the microstructures of degraded lignocellulosic substrates. A. nomius and T. harzianum were highly efficient in ligninolytic enzymes production and in vitro digestibility of agricultural residues. The study reports the production of laccase by A. nomius isolated from termite gut for the first time. The fungal isolates A. nomius and T. harzianum posses potential for ligninocellulosic waste degradation.

Regulation of Cell Death Induced by Acetic Acid in Yeasts.

Acetic acid has long been considered a molecule of great interest in the yeast research field. It is mostly recognized as a by-product of alcoholic fermentation or as a product of the metabolism of acetic and lactic acid bacteria, as well as of lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. High acetic acid levels are commonly associated with arrested fermentations or with utilization as vinegar in the food industry. Due to its obvious interest to industrial processes, research on the mechanisms underlying the impact of acetic acid in yeast cells has been increasing. In the past twenty years, a plethora of studies have addressed the intricate cascade of molecular events involved in cell death induced by acetic acid, which is now considered a model in the yeast regulated cell death field. As such, understanding how acetic acid modulates cellular functions brought about important knowledge on modulable targets not only in biotechnology but also in biomedicine. Here, we performed a comprehensive literature review to compile information from published studies performed with lethal concentrations of acetic acid, which shed light on regulated cell death mechanisms. We present an historical retrospective of research on this topic, first providing an overview of the cell death process induced by acetic acid, including functional and structural alterations, followed by an in-depth description of its pharmacological and genetic regulation. As the mechanistic understanding of regulated cell death is crucial both to design improved biomedical strategies and to develop more robust and resilient yeast strains for industrial applications, acetic acid-induced cell death remains a fruitful and open field of study.

Silage quality and biogas production from Spartina pectinata L. fermented with a novel xylan-degrading strain of Lactobacillus buchneri M B/00077

The aim of the current study was to determine the ability of the Lactobacillus buchneri M B/00077 strain to degrade xylan, its impact on the quality of silage made from the lignocellulosic biomass of Spartina pectinata L., as well as the efficiency of biogas production. In the model in vitro conditions the L. buchneri M B/00077 strain was able to grow in a medium using xylan as the sole source of carbon, and xylanolytic activity was detected in the post-culture medium. In the L. buchneri M B/00077 genome, genes encoding endo-1,4-xylanase and β-xylosidase were identified. The silages prepared using L. buchneri M B/00077 were characterized by a higher concentration of acetic and propionic acids compared to the controls or the silages prepared with the addition of commercial xylanase. The addition of bacteria increased the efficiency of biogas production. From the silages treated with L. buchneri M B/00077, 10% and 20% more biogas was obtained than from the controls and the silages treated with commercial xylanase, respectively. The results of the current study indicated the strain L. buchneri M B/00077 as being a promising candidate for further application in the field of pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass.

Modification of lignin by various additives to mitigate lignin inhibition for improved enzymatic digestibility of dilute acid pretreated hardwood

During acidic pretreatment of renewable lignocellulosic biomass, lignin depolymerization/repolymerization reactions often occur, which intensifies lignin inhibition on cellulose hydrolysis generally through lignin-derived inhibitors formation, unproductive binding and physical blockage effect. In order to improve the enzymatic digestibility of dilute acid pretreated hardwood, in this work various additives were compared and their inhibition mitigating effects were examined. It was revealed that 2-naphthol addition reduced the formation of inhibitory derivatives from lignin, thus increasing the enzymatic hydrolysis yield of the whole slurry after dilute acid pretreatment. The addition of phenolic acids largely diminished enzyme binding effect of the insoluble lignin. Moreover, the 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate additive led to the most pronounced mitigation on physical blockage effect of lignin, as XPS and SEM results showed the significant removal of surface lignin. This work revealed the different mechanisms of various additives in mitigating lignin inhibition, and provided a better understanding on utilizing proper additives to improve biomass saccharification for biorefinery applications.

Enhancement of the nutritional value of fermented corn stover as ruminant feed using the fungi Pleurotus spp.

Four Pleurotus spp. fungi (P. diamor, P. eryngii, P. sajor-caju, P. citrinopileatus) were compared for their potential to improve nutritional value of corn stover as ruminant feed. Corn stover was inoculated with the fungi under solid-state conditions and their results showed that P. sajor-caju and P. eryngii were better than the other two species of Pleurotus with respect to decreasing the acid detergent lignin (ADL) (8.99 vs 9.88 vs 10.16 vs 10.46). In contrast, P. eryngii had lower ability to degrade cellulose (13.38%). Corn stover treated with P. citrinopileatus had the highest crude protein (CP) content (7.65%), whereas treatment with P. sajor-caju resulted in the highest increase in essential amino acids (55.11%). Although fungal pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass does not always result in high-quality feed, overall, P. eryngii and P. sajor-caju improved the nutritive value of corn stover as a ruminant feed.

Lignocellulosic biomass pre-treatment using low-cost ionic liquid for bioethanol production: An economically viable method for wheat straw fractionation

Low-cost Ionic Liquid (IL) is a promising method for the lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment to produce bioethanol. This study investigates utilizing low-cost IL, [TEA][HSO4], for wheat straw pretreatment. The pretreatment was investigated in conditions characterized by a temperature of 130 °C, a high solid-to-solvent load ratio of 1:5 g/g, and 20 wt % water to separate lignin and carbohydrates from the source, which would subsequently undergo enzymatic hydrolysis. The highest delignification rate of 80% and the hemicellulose removal rate of 64.45% were observed in the case of a 3-h pretreated sample with [TEA][HSO4]. Two biomass samples pretreated for 0.5 h and 3-h showed high glucose saccharification yield levels of 50.36 and 87.19%, respectively, and 78.23% xylose yield was achieved in 3-h pretreated sample in enzymatic hydrolysis with commercial enzyme CelluMax in 72 h. Ethanol production and yield of 3-h pretreated biomass reached 43.1 g/L and 84.34% of the maximum theoretical yield after 48 h of fermentation time. However, the yield of the untreated biomass was only 10.76%. Obtained results clearly demonstrated that pretreatment with low-cost IL prior to enzymatic hydrolysis led to higher ethanol yield due to successful delignification. The process developed in this study exhibited economic feasibility of this technique in industrial bioprocess.

A Review on Bacterial Contribution to Lignocellulose Breakdown into Useful Bio-Products.

Discovering novel bacterial strains might be the link to unlocking the value in lignocellulosic bio-refinery as we strive to find alternative and cleaner sources of energy. Bacteria display promise in lignocellulolytic breakdown because of their innate ability to adapt and grow under both optimum and extreme conditions. This versatility of bacterial strains is being harnessed, with qualities like adapting to various temperature, aero tolerance, and nutrient availability driving the use of bacteria in bio-refinery studies. Their flexible nature holds exciting promise in biotechnology, but despite recent pointers to a greener edge in the pretreatment of lignocellulose biomass and lignocellulose-driven bioconversion to value-added products, the cost of adoption and subsequent scaling up industrially still pose challenges to their adoption. However, recent studies have seen the use of co-culture, co-digestion, and bioengineering to overcome identified setbacks to using bacterial strains to breakdown lignocellulose into its major polymers and then to useful products ranging from ethanol, enzymes, biodiesel, bioflocculants, and many others. In this review, research on bacteria involved in lignocellulose breakdown is reviewed and summarized to provide background for further research. Future perspectives are explored as bacteria have a role to play in the adoption of greener energy alternatives using lignocellulosic biomass.
