Exilul unui scriitor în peisaj marin: depre criză, agonie și poate altă soartă

The text reveals an aspect of the theoretical-didactic concept of „exile of literature/literature in exile”. It is important to specify that, in this conceptual instance, the didactic aspect of studying Romanian literature in high school regarding the life and work of writers is also built. One of them is represented by Virgil Tănase, who is a prominent personality of the Romanian diaspora in the French cultural space, with an exceptional journalistic and professional activity: prose writer, playwright, director, journalist and professor in prestigious institutions in France, doctor in sociology and in the semiology of arts and letters. In literature, Virgil Tănase assumes the Romanian oneirism formula as a compensatory fictional space. The confessions of the writer, made on the occasion of some interviews, include the discourse on literature and the status of the artist in the era of Nationalist Socialism, and, at the same time, direct metatextually towards the identification of an assumed literary „interiority”. In today’s society, when it becomes increasingly difficult to differentiate values from surrogates, Virgil Tănase formulates a final exhortation for the creators of literature, that of continuing to write authentically, regardless of time or space. Prolific writer, Virgil Tănase will forever remain an integrative spirit, having the aspiration and vocation to capture everything: the era in which he lives, the spirit of the world from which he comes, the human soul.

The Effect of Soccer on College Success and How People Should Allocate Time for Participation

The development of young talent at an early age is crucial to the standing of soccer in any country. Structured support for emerging talent creates a basis for national pride and socioeconomic mobility, especially in countries where soccer is venerated almost obsessively. This study takes a sophisticated approach to analyzing the socioeconomic effects of early soccer training, revealing a crucial connection between a persons talent in soccer and the overall value gained from both direct and indirect advantages. The paper goes into further detail on how the earning potential produced by soccer extends to beneficial externalities like improved physical and mental well-being, which not only improves the quality of life but also increases the likelihood of getting accepted into prestigious educational institutions. The study identifies a possible talent threshold that may be used as a benchmark for assessing the financial viability of soccer training in relation to immediate costs. It also considers how decreasing this talent requirement can significantly increase student involvement in soccer. Consequently, this investigation aims to further the conversation on childhood soccer training by exposing its larger effects on both personal and global socioeconomic environments.

Empowering the Online Media System: The Innovative Route of Effective Digital Government Response in China

Studies on the Chinese government’s online response present diverse voices and perspectives, but consensus cannot be reached. The literature has constantly ignored the construction of an online media mechanism, which includes professional positions and standardized procedures that were designed inside the online media to process information and facilitate an effective government response. Does the reconstruction of an online media mechanism benefit the effectiveness of government response? If so, how? From the perspective of the media mechanism, what are the influential factors for the effectiveness of government response and how do they work to exert this impact? Engaging with the media system dependence theory, I conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with the editor at the Beijing Municipal Government Website and official document drafters at prestigious research institutions. In conversation with the political system theory, multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the daily government response data covering the period from 2019 to 2020. This article argues that the innovations in the mechanism inside the online media system can outsource some information management functions from the political system to the online media system. These innovations also assist in partial power transfer from the political system to the media system to achieve an effective government response. The political system faces dual pressure, including content pressure and time pressure, regarding its online response.

Analyzing the challenges faced by recently qualified nurses in radiation therapy nursing at Japan’s National University Hospitals: Uncovering the determinants of difficulty

ObjectiveNewly graduated nurses embarking on careers in radiation therapy nursing at Japan’s National University Hospitals face a spectrum of challenges, many of which have received limited attention in existing literature. This study aimed to uncover the primary difficulties encountered by these nurses, with a specific focus on their implications for training and systematic education. MethodsEmploying a survey involving nurses from five prestigious medical institutions in Japan, we explored the real-time experiences and challenges within radiation therapy nursing. Our investigation concentrated on adverse events and the requisite knowledge for effective symptom management. The results illuminated a notable divergence in experiences among nurses, with particular challenges emerging in the treatment of head and neck cancers, especially when combined with chemotherapy. The data emphasized the pivotal role of certified nurses in offering support and knowledge transfer in complex cases, underscoring the importance of peer support and consultations. ResultsThe findings underscored a significant variance in experiences among nurses, with specific difficulties encountered in the management of head and neck cancers, particularly in conjunction with chemotherapy. The data highlighted the essential role of certified nurses in providing support and knowledge dissemination in challenging scenarios, underscoring the significance of peer support and consultations. ConclusionsThis study provides an overview of the landscape, highlighting the critical role of peer consultation and the need for advancements in the educational framework for radiation therapy nurses.

The Capital-Labor Problem in Academic Knowledge Production

This theoretical essay critically examines the intricate relationship between academic knowledge production, academic capital accumulation, and the pervasive influence of neo-liberalization within the contemporary knowledge-based society and economy. After introducing the concepts of academic capital and academic labor, the paper identifies a concerning emphasis on academic capital in the world system of academic knowledge production, where qualifications from prestigious institutions disproportionately influence career opportunities, mobility, and research funds. The essay argues that while there is ongoing criticism regarding the neo-liberalization of academia, a related phenomenon, namely the prestige economy, remains oftentimes uncovered. The paper ultimately highlights the adverse consequences of a capital-centric academic environment, urging for a more balanced approach that prioritizes knowledge diversity, internationalization, and localized research initiatives, countering the homogenizing forces of the prestige economy within global higher education, and puts more emphasis on the production of labor than on academic capital.

University rankings in Nordic higher education: a scoping review

ABSTRACT In response to global competition in higher education, university rankings have been developed. These have been interpreted as indicating the regions and countries with the most prestigious and competitive higher education institutions. The rankings are viewed as important in many countries, but their role is ambiguous and contested in the Nordic region. This study aimed to analyse how rankings were addressed in research literature in the Nordic countries between 2003 and 2022. Both peer-reviewed studies and ‘grey’ (unpublished) literature were analysed via a scoping review methodology, encompassing 86 studies in total. The review identified five research themes pertaining to university rankings, touching on universities’ structural and governance reforms, educational affairs, funding and finances, research policies, and internationalization. The study also investigated the changes over time in the themes addressed in rankings-related discourse in the Nordic countries. Most of the studies were conceptual in nature and were conducted via qualitative methods.

Educational Pasts, Enduring Colonial Presents

Abstract Taking Indigenous sovereignty as at once axiomatic and constitutively strategic, this article argues that it is necessary to expand the chronology and disrupt the geographic certitude through which the history and present of US higher education and its internationalization are conventionally understood. Colleges and universities in the British colonies and what became the United States, including Harvard, William & Mary, and Dartmouth, were founded and funded with the intention that they would function as a vital technology through which the nation-state and white Christian culture would reproduce and secure themselves, their possessions, and their futures. This project was to be accomplished through the assimilation and at times incorporation of people, often youth, from polities understood as fundamentally other from that of their instructors and benefactors. Assessments of the extent to which such projects were effectuated vary, but it is well established that contemporary universities and colleges are conceptually and financially rooted in colonial educational projects that targeted Indigenous students for incorporation and assimilation. In an era when many of these same institutions are making substantial, if inadequate, efforts to contend with their historical origins, it is necessary to move beyond acknowledgment of these histories and contend, instead, with how such projects materially and epistemologically underwrite the basic functions of the most well-resourced and prestigious higher education institutions of the present.

The k-step h-index in citation networks at the paper, author, and institution levels

The evaluation of scientific impact plays a crucial role in assessing research contributions. In this study, we introduce the concept of the k-step h-index and investigate its applicability in citation networks at different levels, including papers, authors, and institutions. By incorporating higher generations of citation information, the k-step h-index provides a comprehensive and nuanced measure of scientific influence. It demonstrates exponential growth in k-step citations, capturing valuable information from the Hirsch core and tail. Through power law distribution analysis, we uncover the presence of highly influential entities coexisting with less influential ones, revealing the heterogeneity of impact within citation networks. To validate the effectiveness of the k-step h-index, we utilize a vast dataset from APS, conducting a thorough examination of its consistency and convergent validity. Our findings demonstrate strong correlations between the k-step h-index and conventional metrics, as well as alignment with measures of innovation. This confirms the reliability of the k-step h-index and its ability to capture innovative contributions. Notably, when compared to benchmarks, the k-step h-index outperforms in accurately ranking expert-selected items, including milestone papers, distinguished authors, and prestigious institutions. Higher values of the k-step h-index consistently exhibit superior performance, showcasing their predictive power in identifying prominent scientific entities. These findings hold significant implications for research evaluation, policy-making, and strategic planning, as they pave the way for a more holistic understanding of scholarly contributions.

Finance for Life Instead of Death

The pursuit of a world free from hunger and poverty has been a long-standing challenge on the global stage, and a Goal for many esteemed publication sites and scholars. This research endeavor conducted by financial experts, guided by a comprehensive analysis of data from prestigious institutions such as The United States Government, European Union, International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, United Nations, and the World Nuclear Association, seeks to shed light on critical aspects of this multifaceted issue.
 Our study begins by critically examining the prevailing notion that advanced nations and economic unions, typified by the United States and the European Union, face financial constraints when endeavoring to eliminate poverty without compromising the welfare of their own populations. Contrary to conventional wisdom, empirical evidence emerges, suggesting that a mere reallocation of 2% of military spending from these advanced nations toward the noble cause of assisting developing countries could hold the key to eradicating global hunger.
 Intriguingly, as financial experts by studying audit reports we also uncover the substantial resources harbored within international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. These resources, though ample, appear underutilized in the battle against hunger-related deaths. Political influences, stemming from the significant funding these institutions receive from developed nations, may hold the key to understanding this puzzle. This revelation challenges the perception that international institutions are ill-equipped to address poverty and hunger, emphasizing the need to explore the underlying dynamics.
 While our research unveils these critical insights, it regrettably falls short of rejecting the hypothesis that underprivileged nations, like Niger, possess the natural resources required to combat hunger if only developed nations cease resource exploitation. Thus, the inescapable truth persists, developing countries require support from their more affluent counterparts.
 In summary, this research abstract encapsulates the urgency of the global effort of financial decision makers needed to combat hunger and poverty. It underscores the potential for change through resource reallocation and the imperative of addressing political influences within international institutions. These findings beckon us to bridge the gap between advanced and developing nations, ushering in a brighter future for all.
 This research promises to inform policymakers, international organizations, and concerned citizens alike, offering a deeper understanding of the intricate web of global efforts to eliminate hunger and poverty.

Discurso del Presidente de la Academia Argentina de Cirugía

It is a great honor and an enormous responsibility to have been elected president of such a prestigious institution as the Academia Argentina de Cirugía by my peers, and I am deeply grateful for this nomination. This academy was created almost 112 years ago at a very particular historical moment in our country (a rich and migrant-receiving country). Buenos Aires was a thriving, cosmopolitan city with important medical advances. It was in this context that a group of surgeons, led by Dr. Daniel Cranwell, gathered at his home to found the Sociedad de Cirugía de Buenos Aires, the first association of surgeons in Argentina. Later, in 1939, it became Academia Argentina de Cirugía, following the guidelines of the French Academy of Surgery. However, for political reasons, it was forced to return to its original name in 1954, and it was not until 1969 that it took on its current name.

Building management and innovation capabilities for global health: a senior executive program.

Accurately approaching the major challenges associated with global health management has become a mandatory key point in the training of medical leaders around the world. The Senior Executive Program in Global Health Innovation Management (SEPGHIM) seeks to provide an answer to the need for innovation and managerial capacity building in Global Health and to address the current detachment between Public Health Organizations and Business Schools. In 2019, SEPGHIM's first edition was led by five prestigious academic institutions on three continents. The first cohort included a total of 27 high-level health professionals and executives from 16 countries with 7-10 years of working experience who participated during the 11 months of the course. The program sought to fill an often-found knowledge gap among health professionals in terms of health innovation, leadership, and management. SEPGHIM relied on multiple pedagogical methods conveyed through a robust theoretical and applied syllabus that included case studies, simulations, guest speakers, debates, site visits, and an executive challenge. The program achieved various results. First, it recruited high-level health professionals that ensured diversity of backgrounds, allowing an exchange of experiences and different ways of addressing global health challenges. Second, it created a network of health professionals for possible future collaborations that can anticipate new trends and opportunities in global health and work together with stakeholders from other sectors. This networking was one of the most highly rated benefits by the students. Finally, the participants expressed great eagerness to recommend the program (4.9 out of 5) to other decision-makers and leaders in the global health field. These results provide positive insights regarding the value of such a training program for senior health professionals.

The Jackie Robinson Dynamic for African-American Faculty at the Most Prestigious and Elite Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) that Teach Cybersecurity and Technology

Abstract The incredible strength and bravery of Jackie Robinson in breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball is remembered and admired by many. However, the difficulty of his journey is often underestimated. As the Black Lives Matter movement has become more prominent, African-American faculty members at Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) face their own trials similar to Robinson’s. The need for psychological safety in the workplace from their colleagues and organizational leadership has never been more critical. They experience isolation, alienation, and inequality as faculty and potential professionals in cybersecurity and technology fields. This paper explores those dynamics through the concept of Jackie Robinson’s journey.

Exploring Attitudes towards Embedding Education for Sustainable Development in Curriculum Design

This paper shares insights from the research conducted during the 2022-2023 Learning Design and Education for Sustainable Development Bootcamp. The Bootcamp was designed by the Association for Learning Design and Education for Sustainable Development (ADLESD) and delivered in collaboration with UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC). The Bootcamp is supported by the CoDesignS ESD Framework and has been executed in collaboration with several prestigious institutions. The study aimed to identify any changes in attitudes towards embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into curriculum design following the Bootcamp. Using a validated survey that measured four attitude components - affective, perceived control, usefulness, and behavioural - significant variations were observed in the latter three components post-Bootcamp. This shows an increased perception of ESD's practical value, participant confidence in implementing it, and readiness to adjust behaviours to accommodate ESD principles. However, the affective component, or emotional response to ESD, remained largely unchanged, likely due to the Bootcamp participants' self-selection. Particularly notable was the boost in the perceived control element, possibly due to the clear pedagogical framework and toolkit provided during the Bootcamp. This improvement in the Control component and the overall positive impact of the Bootcamp are consistent with feedback obtained from participants in the final evaluation survey. These findings indicate that the Bootcamp and the use of the CoDesignS ESD Framework and Toolkit Planner significantly increased participants' willingness, confidence, and ability to integrate ESD into curriculum design effectively.

Assessing the expertise of researchers has garnered increased interest recently. This heightened focus arises from the growing emphasis on interdisciplinary science and the subsequent need to form expert teams. When forming these teams, the coordinators need to assess expertise in fields that are often very different from theirs. The conventional reliance on signals of success, prestige, and academic impact can unintentionally perpetuate biases within the assessment process. This traditional approach favors senior researchers and those affiliated with prestigious institutions, potentially overlooking talented individuals from underrepresented backgrounds or institutions. This paper addresses the challenge of determining expertise by proposing a methodology that leverages the relevance of a researcher's recent publication track to the proposed research as a "sensemaking" signal. We introduce a novel {\em $\alpha-$relevance} metric between the trained embedding over the titles and abstracts of a researcher's recent publications and the embedding of a call and show that high values of {\em $\alpha-$relevance} indicate expertise in the field of the call. By evaluating the {\em $\alpha-$relevance} threshold, we establish a robust framework for the assessment process. For the evaluation process, we use (1) NIH grant-winning records and researchers' publications obtained from Scopus and (2) grant submissions dataset from a research university and the corresponding researchers' publications. Additionally, we investigate the optimal time window required to capture the researcher's expertise based on their publication timeline. Considering the temporal relationship between grant winnings and publications, we identify the most informative time window reflecting the researcher's relevant contributions. The data-driven methodology transcends traditional signals of success, promoting a fair evaluation process of the researcher's relevance to the proposed research. By leveraging objective indicators, we aim to facilitate the formation of expert teams across disciplines while mitigating biases in assessing expertise.

1821-2021. Bicentenarul Revoluției conduse de Tudor Vladimirescu

The volume 1821-2021. The Bicentennial of the Revolution led by Tudor Vladimirescu, coordinated by Sevastian Cercel and Georgeta Ghionea, brings together 22 papers signed by representatives of the academic and university environment which belong to some prestigious institutions in Romania (“C.S. Nicolăescu-Plopşor” Institute for Research in Social Studies and Humanities from Craiova, of the Romanian Academy, University of Craiova, University of Bucharest, “George Baritiu” Institute of History, of the Romanian Academy from Cluj-Napoca, “Ovidius” University from Constanța, Valahia University from Târgoviște). The volume is the result of the National Symposium dedicated to Vladimirescu (1821-2021. The Bicentennial of the Revolution led by Tudor Vladimirescu), initiated by the researchers from institute from Craiova, held on May 14-15, 2021. The volume is structured in three chapters and all the papers are subordinated to the maine topic.

Crisscrossing scapes in the global flow of elite mainland Chinese students.

This paper applies Appadurai's notion of scapes in globalisation to study international student mobility. Thirty mainland Chinese students were interviewed; the majority of whom studied at prestigious institutions in the West before enrolling in their current PhD programmes at a research-intensive university in Hong Kong (HK) in the immediate aftermath of HK's large-scale social protests and amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. We seek to understand why these students relocated to HK to further their studies given these turbulent circumstances and how their mainlander identity and sojourns in the West influence their perceptions of HK's social movements from the perspectives of ethnoscape and ideoscape, respectively. Our findings reveal that HK represented the 'best' compromise for our participants, mitigating their nostalgia for home (i.e. mainland China) whilst offering a superior education to the Chinese mainland. Most participants perceived HK as a nationalistic ideoscape, wherein HK people's pursuit of autonomy is subordinated to the putative Chinese national interests. Moreover, ethnoscape and ideoscape dynamics were found to crisscross other scapes. Generous scholarships (i.e. financescape) provided additional incentives driving student relocations. The persistent consumption of Chinese social media (techno-mediascape) was found to have resulted in worldview conformity between our participants and the Chinese state.
