New England Surgical Society Presidential Address: Lessons from the Renaissance for 21st Century Surgeons.

Seizing the moments and lessons learned from the global response to COVID-19 pandemic: Creating a platform to shape the scientific and public discourse of research on adolescence.

COVID-19 response offers a model to guide research and preventive interventions targeting adolescents, their families, and communities. My 2022 SRA Presidential Address posed: What if the COVID-19 Response Served as a Guidepost for Future Research on Adolescence? Solution versus Problem-Focused Agenda. Several "pandemics" were already underway, emerging from historic and contemporary events that threaten the safety and survival of human lives. The Multi-Transgenerational Life Course Theoretical model was selected to demonstrate pathways through which the transmission of generational exposure to crisis and trauma impact adolescents' developmental trajectories. Recommendations to inform and guide an adolescent research rapid response agenda are proposed minds to advance equity and social justice can become realities.

The 2024 Presidential Address. The power of humility.

Physicians generally underestimate their potential to influence social progress, despite substantial precedents for medical professionals leading important societal transformations. The author believes that our times require we challenge the notion that physicians have limited influence beyond clinical settings. Our voice is powerful and important. It needs to be heard. In light of these considerations, the author chose "What Matters" as the theme of the 2024 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting held in Chicago on May 3-6. The topic was reflective of his personal conviction that physicians, by virtue of the public respect and goodwill maintained through their dedication to the art and science of medicine, possess unparalleled potential to enhance both individual and societal health and well-being. The 2024 AANS scientific program committee determined to create an unprecedented program that would allow the community of neurosurgery to engage with some of the greatest minds in American medicine, academics, journalism, technology and public life. All contributors were invited to weave their insights regarding what truly matters into a broad, thought-provoking intellectual and spiritual tapestry. Universally resonant themes such as empathy, innovation, resilience, leadership, value, trust and equity framed the cooperative dialogues, emphasizing our shared humanity and the core values uniting us-despite our differences. The objectives for the 2024 Annual Meeting were ambitious: to consider as a professional community themes of utmost importance to our professional and personal lives; to catalyze a profound reevaluation of our collective objectives; to envision an expanded common mission; and to inspire visionary leaders to collaborate on creating lasting value-both for the patients who are the principal focus of our shared devotion, and for society writ large.

2024 NASS Presidential Address: Empathy vs Efficiency in the Age of AI in Spine Care

“A Content Analysis of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences’ Presidential Address, 1993-2022: A Qualitative Exploration”

Prominent sociologists and criminologists have not accorded the respect that criminology and criminal justice (CCJ) deserves. They have questioned CCJ’s standing as an autonomous discipline; they have criticized CCJ for its lack of a “common conceptual language,” a “core theoretical tradition,” and a “methodological commitment.” Consequently, criminologists and criminal justice scholars have been warned not to stray too far from their sociological roots. This condition leads to the following question: are there new ideas about crime and justice that are contained in the annual addresses of ACJS presidents? This article examines the addresses delivered by the presidents of ACJS. The findings indicate that three key domains of reflections can be discerned in the ACJS presidential addresses: (1) legitimacy through accreditation; (2) policy irrelevance as a prelude to public criminology; and (3) visions of justice. The three findings are compared and contrasted with the core themes found in a prior study of ASC presidential addresses.

Writing a presidential address is an interesting exercise, and for those of you who have been fortunate enough to lead an organization, you know that not a day goes by since you become President-elect that you do not think about something that you should include, some experience with a mentor you have had that is worthy of documentation, a message you hope the audience remembers after you are finished, and the hope that it will measure up to the memorable presidential addresses that you have heard in many societies, including the American Surgical Association.

Body and Imagination: Healing Trauma through Ignatian Meditation and Bio-Spiritual Focusing

Abstract: Ignatian meditation and bio-spiritual focusing (or BSF) hold healing potential for those recovering from the effects of trauma. This essay, originally delivered as the presidential address of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality in November 2023, outlines the nature and sources of trauma, explores its effects on the human psyche and body, and offers healing pathways from two streams in Christian spirituality—imaginative Ignatian prayer and BSF. It also explores the theological and spiritual implications of Christ's solidarity with the sufferer, and some of the ways in which Christ offers compassionate witness and embodied presence for those on the healing journey.

Further, she poses questions about the future of AESA with an eye toward how the organization might use the storytelling process to help better understand who it is in 2022, where it is going, and how it might meet this challenging historical moment.

2024 NCSA Presidential Address: Back to the Future: The Past and Potential Future Impacts of Natural Disasters

ABSTRACT The 2024 NCSA Presidential Address discusses the past and potential future impacts of natural disasters, including COVID-19, on the American people. This NCSA conference talk is based on two edited volumes previously published by Lexington Books in 2021 and 2023. Relevant theories, such as critical demography and historical categorical inequality, are introduced as starting points in the narrative. Next, descriptions of contributions to the volumes are provided, which covered topics such as criminal justice, demographics, economics, history, political science, and sociology to show how effects of natural disasters vary by economic and social class in the United States. Contributors also discussed specific dynamics related to COVID-19, including media responses to COVID-19, differential impacts on the poor, specific impacts on college students through technology, and how the intersection of race, class, and gender matter for natural disaster research. This talk examines social and political mechanisms in disaster response and relief, and then offers potential solutions to the accelerating inequality in America.

Retorika Krisis: Analisis Pidato Presiden Indonesia dan Korea Selatan pada Tragedi Kanjuruhan dan Itaewon

This study compares the responses of the Indonesian and South Korean presidents to man-made disasters and investigates the presence of shift-blaming in their speeches. Utilizing Rhetorical Analysis (RA) to examine how speeches are constructed to achieve specific objectives, and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to explore historical and social contexts, the study focuses on President Jokowi’s speeches following the Kanjuruhan tragedy and President Yoon’s speeches after the Itaewon disaster. RA delves into the rhetorical strategies, including invention, disposition, style, and delivery, to analyze how each president uses ethos, logos, and pathos to construct their messages. CDA further examines the discourse of shift-blaming characteristic of autocratic tendencies. The findings reveal differences in how each president addresses responsibility and accountability. While the trace of shift blaming is prominently evident in Jokowi’s speeches, Yoon’s speeches are characterized by a strong emphasis on image-saving. This comparative analysis provides insights into the distinct communication strategies employed by leaders in response to man-made disasters.
