Green synthesis of silver nanoparticle for catalytic applications and priming study by seed germination

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been successfully synthesized using leaf extract of Neem (Azadirachta Indica), Mint (Mentha Piperita), Tulsi (Ocimum Tenuiflorum), Bermuda grass (Cynodon Dactylon) and silver salt. As plant extracts produce best capping material for the stabilization of nanoparticles. AgNPs were characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy in range of 200–800 nm and transmission electron microscopy TEM, XRD and FTIR. The nanoparticles synthesized were mainly in sizes between 25 and 100 nm. They appeared to be spherical, nanotriangles and irregular in shape. Catalytic application was observed for all the aqueous solution of leaves, quantity taken was 1 ml, 2 ml, 3 ml, 4 ml and 5 ml. Furthermore, prepared Ag nanoparticles are also used for seed germination.

Biosynthesis, Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Ag Nanoparticles Prepared Using Piper nigrum Fruit Extract

Nanomaterials are promising alternatives to antibiotics with the potential to handle the menace of emerging multidrug resistance in pathogenic microbes. We report a simple biosynthetic approach to prepare Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with strong antibacterial and antifungal actions by using Piper nigrum fruit extract as a bioreducing agent. The biosynthesized material was characterized by SEM, AFM, TEM, HRTEM, XRD and UV–Visible absorption spectroscopy. SEM, AFM and TEM analyses provided evidence that the average diameter of the Ag NPs was 18[Formula: see text]nm, while XRD and HRTEM confirmed the FCC structure of Ag NPs. The biosynthesized Ag NPs demonstrated extremely strong antibacterial activity against Bacillus oceanisediminis and Escherichia coli, and showed extremely strong antifungal action against Schizosaccharomyces pombe, inhibiting their growth at very low concentrations of 3[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL, 4[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL and 3[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/mL, respectively. The molecular origin of their antibacterial and antifungal activity was studied using various molecular and biochemical assays. The results of these assays revealed a major role for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the antifungal and antibacterial actions of the biosynthesized Ag NPs. Furthermore, morphological changes in cells and cell wall damage upon Ag NP treatment were observed by scanning electron microscopy. In addition, significant enhancement in protein leakage and fragmentation of DNA was also observed upon treatment of S. pombe, B. oceanisediminis and E. coli with Ag NPs. In conclusion, the observed extremely strong antibacterial and antifungal activities of biosynthesized Ag NPs are due to the oxidative stress triggered by ROS, causing cell wall damage and subsequent protein leakage and DNA fragmentation.

Environmentally benign preparation of Ag nanoparticles & Ag-rGO nanocomposite and evaluation of their photocatalytic, sensing, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities

Environmental pollution and fossil fuel depletion are becoming major issues on a worldwide scale, posing serious threats to both the environment and human health. Finding effective and affordable pollution cleanup technologies as well as the alternate source of energy is very important. The present study is concerned with the synthesis of Ag nanoparticles and Ag-rGO composite employing environment affable and cost-effective green combustion method. The fuel used for the preparation of NPs was the Malus domastica juice. The synthesized materials were subjected for the characterization techniques like XRD, TEM, SEM, Raman and UV-Visible spectral studies. The synthesized nanocomposite was analyzed for photocatalytic dye degradation, electrochemical nitrate sensing, antibacterial as well as antioxidant activities. Ag-rGO degraded methylene blue dye completely by 70 min. Further, the material was subjected for recyclability test and it was efficient and stable upto 5th cycle. Effect of various parameters such as catalytic load, dye concentration and pH on efficiency of dye degradation was analyzed. Nitrite sensing studies revealed that the LOD was found to be 19.8 µg. Further, Ag-rGO exhibited antibacterial activity on Pseudomonas aeroginosa bacterial strain to a greater extent compared to all the other bacterial strains tested. The Ag-rGO nanocomposite was found to be the potent antioxidant with IC50 value of 1489 µg/mL. Therefore, this work exemplifies the easy and eco-friendly green synthetic route for the large-scale industrial production of versatile Ag-rGO nanocomposite.

Mussel-inspired interface deposition strategy for mesoporous metal-phenolic nanospheres with superior antioxidative, photothermal and antibacterial performance

Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) have emerged as a versatile and multifunctional platform applied in bioimaging, disease treatment, electrocatalysis, and water purification. The synthesis of MPNs with mesoporous frameworks and ultra-small diameters (<200nm), crucial for post-modification, cargo loading, and mass transport, remains a formidable challenge. Inspired by mussel chemistry, mesoporous metal-phenolic nanospheres (MMPNs) are facilely prepared by direct deposition of the metal-polyphenol complex on the interface of oil nano-droplets composed of block copolymers/1,3,5-trimethylbenzene followed by a spontaneous template-removal process. Due to the penetrable and stable networks, the oil nano-droplets gradually leak from the networks driven by shear stress during the stirring process. As a result, MMPNs are obtained without additional template removal procedures such as solvent extraction or high-temperature calcination. The materials have a large pore size (∼12.1nm), uniform spherical morphology with a small particle size (∼99nm), and a large specific surface area (49.8m2 g-1). Due to the abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, the MMPNs show excellent antioxidative property. The MMPNs also have excellent photothermal property, whose photothermal conversion efficiency was 40.9%. Moreover, the phenolic hydroxyl groups can reduce Ag+ in situ to prepare Ag nanoparticles loaded MMPNs composites, which have excellent inhibition performance of drug-resistant bacteria biofilm.

Synthesis and Properties of Ag‐Au Alloy Nanoparticles with Controlled Composition for Computed Tomography Imaging Applications

AbstractNumerous non‐invasive assays have been developed to support CT imaging, consequently increasing the precision of diagnosis. Although these efforts made a significant contribution to clinical research, there is still more to be done. The goal is to replace conventional contrast agents with more potent ones. In this study, Ag−Au alloy nanoparticles were fabricated by substitution method between the precursor Au3+ and the previously prepared Ag nanoparticles. Effects of Au3+ quantity on the formation and characteristics of Ag−Au alloy nanoparticles were investigated. It showed that Ag−Au nanoalloy with a size of 14.2±1.0 nm, SPR absorption peak at 520 nm, and Ag: Au atomic ratio of approximately 3 : 1 were appropriate for biomedical applications. After phase transfer using poly (maleic anhydride‐alt‐1‐octadecene) (PMAO), the nano Ag−Au solution owned remarkable durability, stability and non‐toxicity Vero healthy cell line at high test concentration. In‐vitro CT imaging demonstrated a good X‐ray adsorption coefficient, and the hounsfield units (HU) was noticeably increased. As a promising CT contrast agent, the X‐ray attenuation of nano Ag−Au solutions correlated linearly with concentrations. These findings led to a potential application in the biomedical field, particularly in computed tomography (CT) imaging diagnosis.

Galvanic-Replacement-Assisted Synthesis of Nanostructured Silver-Surface for SERS Characterization of Two-Dimensional Polymers.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a powerful technology in trace analysis. However, the wide applications of SERS in practice are limited by the expensive substrate materials and the complicated preparation processes. Here we report a simple and economical galvanic-replacement-assisted synthesis route to prepare Ag nanoparticles on Cu(0) foil (nanoAg@Cu), which can be directly used as SERS substrate. The fabrication process is fast (ca. 10 min) and easily scaled up to centimeters or even larger. In addition, the morphology of the nanoAg@Cu (with Ag particles size from 30 nm to 160 nm) can be adjusted by various additives (e.g., amino-containing ligands). Finally, we show that the as-prepared nanoAg@Cu can be used for SERS characterization of two-dimensional polymers, and ca. 298 times relative enhancement of Raman intensity is achieved. This work offers a simple and economical strategy for the scalable fabrication of silver-based SERS substrate in thin film analysis.

Synthesis of bacterial cellulose nanofibers/Ag nanoparticles: Structure, characterization and antibacterial activity

The aim of this study was to compare the characterization of bacterial cellulose nanofibers/Ag nanoparticles (BCNs/Ag nanoparticles) obtained by three different pretreatment methods of BCNs (no pretreatment, sodium hydroxide activation pretreatment and TEMPO-mediated oxidation pretreatment), which were recoded as N-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles, A-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles and O-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles, respectively. The results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed the prepared Ag nanoparticles by three different pretreatment methods were spherical and dispersed on the surface of BCNs, while the Ag nanoparticles in O-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles displayed the smallest diameter with a value of 20.25nm and showed the most uniform dispersion on the surface of BCNs. The ICP-MS result showed O-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles had the highest content of Ag nanoparticles with a value of 2.98wt%, followed by A-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles (1.53wt%) and N-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles (0.84wt%). The cytotoxicity assessment showed that the prepared BCNs/Ag nanoparticles were relatively safe. Furthermore, the O-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles had the best antioxidant and antibacterial activities as compared with the other two types of BCNs/Ag nanoparticles, where O-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles destroyed the structure of bacterial cell membranes to lead the leakage of intracellular components. This study showed that O-BCNs/Ag nanoparticles as antibacterial agents have great potential in food packaging.

Ag/g-C3N4 nanocomposite: Green fabrication and its application as a catalyst in the synthesis of new series of depsipeptides as biologically active compounds and investigation on their anti-breast cancer activity

In this study, we bring forward a green and novel eco-friendly strategy for the fabrication of Ag/g-C3N4 nanocomposite via a fast in-situ generation method using Ferula Gummosa extracts as both stabilizer and reducing agent. Ag/g-C3N4 nanocomposite was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX-MAP), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After procurement and characterization, the catalytic activity of the prepared reagent was surveyed in the synthesis of a new series of depsipeptides using aspirin/ketoprofen, cyclohexyl isocyanide, and aryl aldehydes at ambient temperature in EtOH/H2O as a green media. Taking into account the economic and environmental facets, the method bestows some advantages such as using plant extracts as green media for the preparation of Ag nanoparticles, simple work-up procedure, mild reaction conditions, short reaction times, and high yields of the products. Additionally, the Ag/g-C3N4 nanocomposite catalyst can be recycled effectually and reused several times without a substantial loss in reactivity.

Enhanced photocatalytic and SERS performance of Ag nanoparticles functionalized MoS2 nanoflakes

We report the preparation of Ag nanoparticles functionalized MoS2 nanoflakes by using the chemical reduction method followed by the hydrothermal method. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and elemental mapping reveals the uniform functionalization of Ag nanoparticles with MoS2 nanoflakes. High density of Ag plasmonic nanoparticles onto MoS2 nanoflakes demonstrates tremendously improved charge separation behavior in Ag-MoS2 nanohybrids. Photodecomposition capability of plasmonic Ag-MoS2 nanohybrids was explored by the decomposition of industrial pollutant molecules, showing a direct correlation between the Ag content over the MoS2 surface with their photodecomposition ability. The SERS-based detection profiles of the plasmonic were investigated by the ultra-low detection of MB molecules. The Ag-MoS2 nanohybrids SERS substrate manifests the detection of MB molecules solution up to a concentration of 10-9M with an enhancement factor of 107. In the current study, we proposed and elucidated the probable efficient charge transfer mechanism for improved photocatalytic behavior and SERS-based sensing performance.

Fabrication of Vertically Aligned ZnO Nanorods Modified with Dense Silver Nanoparticles as Effective SERS Substrates

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has attracted increasing attention due to its high spectral reproducibility and unique selectivity to target molecules. Here, a facile approach is proposed to prepare Ag nanoparticles modified ZnO nanorod arrays (Ag/ZnO NR arrays). Ag nanoparticles were densely decorated on the surface of ZnO nanorods through silver mirror reaction and subsequent seed-assisted electrodeposition. The prepared Ag/ZnO NR arrays can be used as a sensitive, uniform, and repeatable SERS substrate for the rapid detection of organic dye molecules and biomolecules with concentrations higher than the corresponding limits of detection (LODs). The LODs for rhodamine 6G (R6G), 4-aminothiophenol (PATP) and adenine are calculated to be 1.0 × 10−13 M, 1.6 × 10−12 M and 3 × 10−11 M, respectively. The enhancement factor (EF) of the SERS substrate is estimated to be as high as ~2.7 × 108 when detecting 10−10 M R6G. Particularly, the as-synthesized substrate exhibits high selectivity to multiple components. In addition, the fabricated Ag/ZnO NR arrays can be recycled due to their superior self-cleaning ability and can realize photocatalytic degradation of R6G in water within 1 h driven by UV light, showing that the three-dimensional recyclable SERS substrates have wide applications in environmental pollution monitoring and biomedical analysis.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles: Their Characterization, Antimicrobial, Antioxidant Activity and Nanogel Formulation

This study investigates an efficient and sustainable route of preparing Ag nanoparticles (NPs) using 1–5 mmol/L aqueous silver nitrate with leaf extracts of five plants—<i>Musa balbisiana</i> (banana), <i>Azadiracta indica</i> (neem), <i>Ricinus communis</i> (castor-oil plant), <i>Tridax procumbens</i> (tridax), and <i>Cardiospermum halicacabum</i> (balloon vine) for their wide availability. These synthesized nanoparticles were characterized with the help of ultraviolet (UV)–visible (Vis) spectrophotometer. The peaks were observed in 418–493 nm. For <i>M. balbisiana</i>, <i>A. indica</i>, <i>R. communis</i>, and <i>C. halicacabum</i>, the average size of nanoparticles was in the range of 90–100 nm. For <i>T. procumbens</i>, it was 39–60 nm as determined by dynamic light scattering. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis showed the peak in silver region confirming presence of elemental silver. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed that the particles were of a spherical shape in <i>M. balbisiana</i> sample with an average size of 33.87 nm as well as in <i>T. procumbents</i> sample with an average size of 28.512 nm. Ag NPs showed effective antibacterial and antifungal activity against representative pathogens of bacteria and fungi. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity of Ag NPs was found to be in the range of 8.9%–78.86%. H₂O₂ radical scavenging activity was recorded in the range of 6.036%–57.342%. The nanogel was prepared from synthesized Ag NPs, and its properties like viscosity and stability were evaluated. The results confirmed that this protocol is a simple, rapid, one-step, eco-friendly, nontoxic, and alternative conventional physical/chemical method.

Synthesis of bentonite/Ag nanocomposite by laser ablation in air and its application in remediation

In this research, a simple, green, and efficient approach is described to produce novel bentonite/Ag nanocomposite wherein the preparation of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) deployed the laser ablation method in air; Ag NPs are deposited on the bentonite via the magnetic stirring method. The structural and morphological characterization of the as-prepared bentonite/Ag nanocomposite (denoted as B/Ag30, 30min being the laser ablation time) is accomplished using different methods. Additionally, the catalytic assessment of the ensued composite exhibited excellent catalytic reduction/degradation activity for common aqueous pollutants namely methyl orange (MO), congo red (CR) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) utilizing NaBH4 as reductant. Furthermore, the recycling tests displayed the high stability/reusability of B/Ag30 nanocomposite for at least 4 runs with retention of catalytic prowess.

Ag Nanoparticles@Agar Gel as a 3D Flexible and Stable SERS Substrate with Ultrahigh Sensitivity.

Flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have become one of the research hot spots due to the facile sampling by swabbing or wrapping on rough surfaces and the sensitive and nondestructive detection of contaminants. In this work, we proposed a simple and fast in situ reduction method to prepare Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) composited agar hydrogel (Ag NPs@Agar) flexible SERS substrate. Owing to the three-dimensional (3D) structure, good hydrophilicity and adsorption of the agar hydrogel, Ag NPs were grown uniformly in the 3D cross-linked structure. The distribution density of Ag NPs was further increased by the volume shrinkage when the hydrogel was dried in air. This high density and uniformly distribution of Ag NPs produced a large number of highly active SERS regions. In addition, the sensitivity of Ag NPs@Agar was further improved with the assistance of hydrophilic agar gel, which can trap the probe molecules into highly active SERS areas. The SERS results showed that the substrate can be used to detect dye molecules (rhodamine 6G), the minimum detectable concentration was 10-15 M, the relative standard deviation tested at 18 different positions was only 7.58%, and the intensity of the characteristic peak at 611 cm-1 decreased only about 10% after 49 days of storage, demonstrating the superior stability. Moreover, the Ag NPs@Agar substrate also could successfully achieve the micro-trace detection of melamine and sodium penicillin G in Xinjiang specialty camel milk powder. The above available results show that the prepared flexible Ag NPs@Agar SERS substrates possess potentials for the illegal additives and antibiotics in food safety analysis.

Arrays of Ag-nanoparticles decorated TiO2 nanotubes as reusable three-dimensional surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates for molecule detection.

Three-dimensional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates usually provide more hot spots in the excitation light beam and higher sensitivity when compared with the two-dimensional counterpart. Here a simple approach is presented for the fabrication of arrays of Ag-nanoparticles decorated TiO2 nanotubes. Arrays of ZnO nanorods were fabricated in advance by a hydrothermal method. Then TiO2 nanotube arrays were achieved by immersing the arrays of ZnO nanorods in an aqueous solution of (NH4)2TiF6 for 1.5 h. Vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays were modified with dense Ag nanoparticles by Ag mirror reaction. High density of Ag nanoparticles decorated on the fabricated TiO2 nanotubes provide plenty of hotspots for Raman enhancement. In addition, the fabricated array of Ag nanoparticles modified TiO2 nanotubes can serve as a reusable SERS substrate because of the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanotubes. The SERS substrate adsorbed with analyte molecules can realize self-cleaning in deionized water after UV irradiation for 2.5 h. The sensitivity of the fabricated SERS substrate was investigated by the detection of organic dye molecules. The detectable concentration limits of rhodamine 6G (R6G), malachite green (MG) and methylene blue (MB) were found to be 10−12 M, 10−9 M and 10−8 M, respectively. The enhancement factor (EF) of the three-dimensional SERS substrate was estimated to be as high as ∼1.4×108. Therefore, the prepared Ag nanoparticles modified TiO2 nanotube arrays have promising potentials to be applied to rapid and trace SERS detection of organic chemicals.

Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and its Utilization in Dye Decomposition for a Clean Environment: A Step Towards Sustainable Development

The tremendous interest of silver nanoparticles for the scientific community has cultivated due to its wide range of industrial applications including biomedicine. Silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) are also being applied as an anti-carcinogen. Enumerable modes are available on its various synthesizing strategies which causes an adverse effect on environment. But green synthesis method which is either plant mediated or microbe mediated, a precious gift to the environment dedicated by the researchers. Here an eco-friendly approach for the preparation of Ag NPs by using aqueous extract of Neem leaves is reported. The formations of silver nanoparticle were confirmed by optical absorption spectra showing a broad absorption peaks at ~420 nm. This peak arises due to the absorption of incident light by the free electrons in the surface of the nanoparticles when they excited by an appropriate electromagnetic excitation. Material identification and crystallinity were dealt with X-ray diffraction spectra. The particles are found to be highly crystalline with face-centred cubic structure. The size of the particle was estimated by transmission electron microscope and found in the nanometer (10-9 m) scale. The synthesized nanoparticles showed a strong photocatalytic activity through the degradation of methylene blue dye under sunlight illumination. After four hours of sunlight irradiation the dye degradation was found to be 88%. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles can be used in waste water treatment in a cost-effective way.

Ag nanoparticles decorated Z-scheme CoAl-LDH/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalyst for expeditious levofloxacin degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Conventional type-II heterojunctions are unable to degrade pollutants efficiently owing to their insufficient redox capacities. Z-scheme heterojunctions have therefore been considered as potential heterojunctions for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants due to their ability to maintain an adequate concentration of redox holes and electrons. In this paper, the preparation of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) decorated Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst composed of a CoAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) and TiO2 is reported. This system was found to exhibit a superior photocatalytic activity in the degradation of the levofloxacin (LVFX) and Cr(VI). The Ag-CAT (12 h) catalyst exhibited the highest kinetic constant for the photocatalytic degradation of LVFX (K = 0.02588 min−1), and this value was 5.93 and 6.95 times greater than the corresponding values for TiO2 (K = 0.00476 min−1) and CoAl-LDH (K = 0.00372 min−1), respectively. A similar effect was also observed for the reduction of Cr(VI). Upon investigating the source of this excellent catalytic activity, it was found that the internal electric field in the CoAl-LDH/TiO2 heterojunction functions as a driving force to facilitate the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby generating holes and electrons with a high redox ability and realizing the effective elimination of a pharmaceutical and a heavy metal pollutant. Finally, the formation of internal electric field dominated Z-scheme CoAl-LDH/TiO2 heterojunction and the photocatalytic mechanism of Ag NPs decorated Z-scheme CoAl-LDH/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalyst was described in detail.

Ag decoration-enabled sensitization enhancement of black phosphorus nanosheets for trace NO2 detection at room temperature

Black phosphorus (BP), one rising star of two-dimensional (2D) materials, has showcased a huge capability for ppb-level NO2 detection. However, sluggish reaction kinetics and fragile stability frustrate its further application. In this regard, for the first time we prepared Ag nanoparticles modified BP nanosheets as the sensing layer via one feasible method to recognize trace NO2 at room temperature. With respect to individual BP, the composition-optimized BP-Ag nanocomposites (BP-Ag-1 sensor) achieved a favorable performance primarily in terms of boosted response (39.9% vs. 11.8%, 100 ppb NO2), accelerated response speed (190 s vs. 486 s, 100 ppb NO2) and strengthened operation stability, together with ultralow theoretical detection limit of 0.25 ppb. Furthermore, a protection layer comprised of polylactic acid (PLA) was anchored onto the surface of BP-Ag-1 sensor to keep the water molecules physically from the sensing layer and retain a distinguishable signal toward trace NO2 at high moisture environments. The introduction of Ag and PLA separately reduced the lone electron pairs from P atoms and suppressed the water penetration into the BP film, thereby offering an alternative way to passivate BP for its optoelectronic applications in the future.

Simple Way for Ag-NPs Preparation based on Starch Macromolecule

: Finding a sustainable, inexpensive way for Ag-NPs synthesis is considered as one of the most important requirements for industrial application. Oxidized starch was prepared using sodium periodate. Oxidized starch (DAS) was characterized by measuring aldehyde content and using FTIR spectroscopy. DAS was used as reducing and stabilizing agent for the preparation of Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). Factors that may affect the preparation of Ag-NPs include pH, AgNO3/DAS molar ratio, temperature and time were studied. UV-Vis. spectroscopy and particle size analysis showed that DAS can act as reducing and stabilizing agent for the preparation of Ag-NPs and the mean particle size was 19 nm. The so prepared AgNPs were used as antibacterial agent for cotton fabric using the pad dry cure method. The results of antibacterial test showed that the presence of Ag-NPs enhanced the antibacterial properties of the treated cotton fabrics.
