A complex network perspective on spatiotemporal propagations of extreme precipitation events in China

Extreme precipitation events (EPEs) cause catastrophic losses to human lives and social economy. Focusing on the wet season from May to October, this paper formulates the complex network to characterize the spatiotemporal propagations of EPEs over 218 river basins in China. Specifically, based on the daily Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation version 2, the event synchronization along with significance test facilitates the complex network of EPEs from 1979 to 2020. By characterizing the topology of EPEs, the results show that synchronous EPEs generally occur over the Hetao Area of Yellow River Basin, Haihe River Basin and Northeast China. The complex network of EPEs classifies the 218 river basins into six communities. In May and June, more than 50 % of EPEs generally occur in South China. From July to September, over 60 % of EPEs tend to be observed in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, upper-middle reaches of Yellow River Basin, Northeast China and Southwest China. In October, about 65 % of EPEs happen in South and Southwest China. In the meantime, less than 10 % of EPEs occur in Northwest China. Among the synchronous EPEs starting in late June or early July and peaking in late July to early August, there exist propagations along the Yellow River, Haihe, Liaohe and Songhua River Basin within one to eight days. Eastward moisture transport along this pathway within four to six days drives the propagation of synchronous EPEs. The complex network analysis of this paper provides useful information for early warning and forecasting of EPEs and flood hazards.

Improving simulations of extreme precipitation events in China by the CMIP6 global climate models through statistical downscaling

The recently released NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP) dataset is a high-resolution daily downscaled dataset derived from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) model simulations. We comprehensively evaluated the performance of the NEX-GDDP dataset in simulating the characteristics of the climatological precipitation and extreme precipitation events across China from 1960 to 2014. We present here the projected changes in precipitation at the end of the 21st century (2070–2099) with respect to a reference period (1985–2014). We compared the NEX-GDDP dataset with both a state-of-the-art gauge data analysis system and the CMIP6 global climate models. The NEX-GDDP dataset significantly outperformed the CMIP6 simulations in replicating the climatological patterns of precipitation. It showed a closer alignment with the observed data, as evidenced by notably increased correlation coefficients and reduced model-relative errors. The NEX-GDDP dataset exceled in accurately reproducing the spatial distribution of indices of extreme precipitation, surpassing the performance of the CMIP6 simulations. The projections show an increased frequency of heavy precipitation under higher emission scenarios in both datasets, with the CMIP6 simulations consistently estimating a higher probability of heavy rain than the NEX-GDDP dataset.

Long-Term Changes, Synoptic Behaviors, and Future Projections of Large-Scale Anomalous Precipitation Events in China Detected by a Deep Learning Autoencoder

Abstract The frequency of large-scale anomalous precipitation events over China has increased during 1961–2018. However, it remains challenging to understand the mechanisms associated with these anomalous events showing different spatial patterns. Here, we applied an autoencoder technique to identify large-scale anomalous precipitation events for both observations and model simulations, which were then classified into several patterns through a self-organizing map method. The synoptic behavior and atmospheric circulation background of different anomalous patterns were also analyzed using simultaneous composite analyses. Results show that occurrences of different anomalous precipitation patterns have increased significantly, except those centered in North China, Northeast China, and the Yangtze River basin. The anomalous precipitation patterns manifest various intraseasonal distributions, which are linked to zonal oscillations of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) and meridional displacements of East Asia westerly jet (EAJ). Accompanied by the westward movement of WNPSH, anticyclonic systems transport warm moist air from the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea to converge with the cold air caused by anomalous cyclones over the northwest flank of the WNPSH, leading to large-scale anomalous precipitation in these regions. Besides WNPSH, the northward and southward displacements of EAJ also favor the occurrence of anomalous precipitation events in northern and southern China, respectively. Our study also illustrates that the occurrence frequency of anomalous precipitation events is projected to increase remarkably under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5–8.5 (SSP585) scenario by rates of twofold to fourfold.

Parallel improved DPSA algorithm for medium-term optimal scheduling of large-scale cascade hydropower plants

Medium-term optimal scheduling of hydropower plants (MOSHPP) should be frequently updated for recurring extreme precipitation events in China to reduce spillage and increase power generation; however, the curse of dimensionality makes obtaining a satisfactory solution in an acceptable time difficult. In this paper, a parallel improved dynamic programming with successive approximation (PIDPSA) for MOSHPPs is proposed to improve the solution quality and meet time requirements. The solution quality is improved by successive approximation of multiple plants instead of one plant for considering more hydraulic connections, a state space reduction strategy combined with constraint preprocessing is adopted to reduce unnecessary calculations and the fine-grained parallelism based on the fork/join framework is employed to greatly shorten the solution time. The proposed method was applied to 11 hydropower cascade plants in the Lancang River with a time horizon of 30 days. The results showed that higher quality solutions can be obtained by IDPSA than conventional methods and DPSA, and the space reduction strategy can effectively improve the solution efficiency. The computation time of PIDPSA decreased from 81345 s for the single-core environment to 6073 s for the 32-core environment, which proves the high efficiency and practical value of PIDPSA for solving MOSHPP problems.

Oceanic and atmospheric anomalies associated with extreme precipitation events in China 1983-2020.

Observed synoptic anomalies in connection with China's extreme precipitation events/floods in the summers of 1982/83, 1997/98, 2010, 2014, 2015/16, and 2020 are studied. These events mainly occur within the middle and lower Yangtze basins. The dominant moisture source is the Northern Indian Ocean and the Southwestern Pacific Ocean of the Indo-Pacific warm pool (IPWP). Both of these bodies of water have warmed since 1979. In East Asia, the strong land-sea thermal contrast driven by global warming drives the increased East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) circulation, which develops deep convective precipitation. The total precipitable water in the Indo-Pacific region has also been increasing since 1979. The intense southwest Indian monsoon transports moist air to the Yangtze basin in mid-June and forms the Meiyu (plum rain) front. Strengthened Okhotsk/Ural blocking highs in East and West Asia, as well as the Western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) and the South Asian high (SAH) over south Eurasia, remain stationary for long periods and interact to exacerbate the precipitation. The western edge of the WPSH expands westward towards East Asia to transport moisture. To the north, the WPSH combines with the two blocking highs to trigger more rain. The intensified SAH expands eastward and merges with the extended WPSH to add rain. On the other hand, rainfall is modulated by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), notably in relation to the super El Niño events in 1982-1983, 1997-1998, 2015-2016, and 2020. The research described in this paper highlights changes in the weather systems with warming and, in particular, the enormous and dominating impact of the warming and expanding IPWP on rainfall extremes. Improved seasonal forecasts and planning ahead will protect lives and livelihoods.

Sensitivity of the simulation of extreme precipitation events in China to different cumulus parameterization schemes and the underlying mechanisms

The ability of climate models to capture extreme precipitation events is crucially important, but most of the existing models contain significant biases for the simulation of extreme precipitation. To understand the causes of these biases, we used five different cumulus parameterization schemes in the regional Climate–Weather Research and Forecasting (CWRF) model to investigate its performance and biases in the simulation of extreme precipitation events in China. In general, the ensemble cumulus parameterization (ECP) scheme was the most skillful in reproducing the spatial distribution of the 95th percentile daily precipitation (P95) and the other four schemes either overestimated (the Kain-Fritsch Eta and Tiedtke schemes) or underestimated (the Betts-Miller-Janjic and New Simplified Arakawa-Schubert schemes) P95. Compared with the observational data, ECP scheme significantly improved the simulation of extreme precipitation in China and had the highest correlation and the smallest root-mean-square error in most areas and seasons. To clarify the underlying physical processes of P95 simulation biases, we established a regression model of extreme precipitation based on ECP scheme. This showed that P95 in North China is mainly affected by moisture convergence, planetary boundary layer height and lifting condensation level (relative importance 18–32%). In Central China, the vertical upward motion of water vapor, sensible heat flux and planetary boundary layer height (relative importance 18–30%) are main factors associated with P95. In South China, the vertical upward motion and horizontal transport of water vapor are predominant (relative importance 26–37%). In addition, the net surface energy, surface and atmospheric radiation flux, total precipitable water, convective available potential energy and cloud water path also have a high correlation with P95 (the second most important factor; relative importance 14–31%). The influence of each factor on the simulation of P95 is different when using different cumulus parameterization schemes and the interaction among the different factors determines the ability of CWRF model to simulate extreme precipitation. These results provide important references for future model evaluations and improvements.

Projection of Future Extreme Precipitation in China Based on the CMIP6 from a Machine Learning Perspective

In recent years, China has suffered from frequent extreme precipitation events, and predicting their future trends has become an essential part of the current research on this issue. Because of the inevitable uncertainties associated with individual models for climate prediction, this study uses a machine learning approach to integrate and fit multiple models. The results show that the use of several evaluation metrics provides better results than the traditional ensemble median method. The correlation coefficients with the actual observations were found to improve from about 0.8 to 0.9, while the correlation coefficients of the precipitation amount (PRCPTOT), very heavy precipitation days (R20mm), and extreme precipitation intensity (SDII95) reached 0.95. Based on this, the precipitation simulations of moderate forced scenario for sharing socio-economic path (SSP2-4.5) from 27 coupled models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) were used to explore potential changes in future extreme precipitation events in China and to calculate the distribution and trends of the PRCPTOT, extreme precipitation amount (R95pTOT), maximum consecutive 5-day precipitation (Rx5day), precipitation intensity (SDII), SDII95, and R20mm for the early 21st century (2023–2050), mid-21st century (2051–2075), and late 21st century (2076–2100), respectively. The results showed that the most significant increase in extreme precipitation indices is expected to occur by the end of the century, with the R95pTOT, Rx5day, and SDII95 increasing by 13.73%, 9.43%, and 9.34%, respectively, from the base period. The remaining three precipitation indexes, the PRCPTOT, SDII, and R20mm, also showed increases of 8.77%, 6.84%, and 4.02%, respectively. Additionally, there were apparent differences in the spatial variation of extreme precipitation. There were significant increasing trends of extreme precipitation indexes in central China and northeast China in the three periods, among which the total annual precipitation showed an increasing trend in central and northern China and a decreasing trend in western and south China. An increasing trend of annual precipitation intensity was found to be mainly concentrated in central China and south China, and the annual precipitation frequency showed a larger increasing trend at the beginning of this century. The annual precipitation frequency showed an increasing trend in the early part of this century. In general, all the indices showed an overall increasing trend in the future period, with the PRCPTOT, Rx5day, and SDII95 showing the most significant overall increasing trends.

Self-Organized Criticality of Precipitation in the Rainy Season in East China

Based on daily precipitation data from 1960 to 2017 in the rainy season in east China, to a given percentile threshold of one observation station, the time that precipitation spends below threshold is defined as quiet time τ. The probability density functions τ in different thresholds follow power-law distributions with exponent β of approximately 1.2 in the day, pentad and ten-day period time scales, respectively. The probability density functions τ in different regions follow the same rules, too. Compared with sandpile model, Γ function describing the collapse behavior can effectively scale the quiet time distribution of precipitation events. These results confirm the assumption that for observation station data and low-resolution precipitation data, even in China, affected by complex weather and climate systems, precipitation is still a real world example of self-organized criticality in synoptic. Moreover, exponent β of the probability density function τ, mean quiet time τ¯q and hazard function Hq of quiet times can give sensitive regions of precipitation events in China. Usual intensity precipitation events (UPEs) easily occur and cluster mainly in the middle Yangtze River basin, east of the Sichuan Province and north of the Gansu Province. Extreme intensity precipitation events (EPEs) more easily occur in northern China in the rainy season. UPEs in the Hubei Province and the Hunan Province are more likely to occur in the future. EPEs in the eastern Sichuan Province, the Guizhou Province, the Guangxi Province and Northeast China are more likely to occur.

Contribution of precipitation events with different consecutive days to rainfall change over Asia during ENSO years

The present study investigates the contributions of four types of precipitation events with different consecutive days (1–3-day, 4–7-day, 8–14-day, and over-14 day) of precipitation to April–October rainfall anomalies over Asia and roles of the three factors (intensity, number, duration) in area-mean rainfall anomalies of four types of precipitation events in El Nino and La Nina years. It is found that precipitation tends to be below normal in the entire tropical and extratropical regions except for northeastern Asia and east and west Indochina Peninsula during El Nino years. During La Nina years, precipitation tends to increase in eastern China, India, the south hills of the Himalayas, west Indochina Peninsula-southwest China, and the Maritime Continent, but decreases in northeast China, east Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and east Indochina Peninsula. The precipitation change at the low latitudinal regions has a larger contribution from the over-14-day events. The number of events is a main factor in changes of precipitation of primary events during El Nino years. The precipitation changes in El Nino and La Nina years are consistent with changes in the activity of cyclonic wind anomalies corresponding to the precipitation events. The intraseasonal wind anomalies leading to the precipitation events in China are preceded by northwestward move of cyclonic systems from the tropical western North Pacific that promotes the start of precipitation in the concerned regions. The present study points to the impacts of intraseasonal wind systems with various lifespans on precipitation changes over Asia in El Nino and La Nina years.

Extreme Summer Precipitation Events in China and Their Changes during 1982 ~ 2019

This work analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of the extreme precipitation over China during the period 1982 to 2019, based on GPCC data. Meanwhile, the spatially clustering characteristic of China is evaluated based on the trends of summer precipitation through K-means. This is the first to clustering based on the trend of summer precipitation. The results indicated that the spatial distribution of MK trends for the summer precipitation indices over China during 1982 ~ 2019 shows increasing and decreasing trends in different regions. The extreme precipitation has been found mainly in Pearl River Basin, Southeastern River Basin, Huaihe River Basin, and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The risk of floods in SERB (the Southeastern River Basin), especially those caused by short-term heavy precipitation, may increase in recent decades. Four clusters are identified through K-means, which can be named as stable (59%), extreme wetter (5%), dryer (19%), and wetter (17%) zones. Combining the spatial distribution of the multi-year average of precipitation indicators and four clusters, the ‘wet to wetter and dry to dryer’ is found in China summer precipitation.

Spatiotemporal Variability in Extreme Precipitation in China from Observations and Projections

Extreme precipitation events, which have intensified with global warming over the past several decades, will become more intense in the future according to model projections. Although many studies have been performed, the occurrence patterns for extreme precipitation events in past and future periods in China remain unresolved. Additionally, few studies have explained how extreme precipitation events developed over the past 58 years and how they will evolve in the next 90 years as global warming becomes much more serious. In this paper, we evaluated the spatiotemporal characteristics of extreme precipitation events using indices for the frequency, quantity, intensity, and proportion of extreme precipitation, which were proposed by the World Meteorological Organization. We simultaneously analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics of extreme precipitation in China from 2011 to 2100 using data obtained from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models. Despite the fixed threshold, 95th percentile precipitation values were also used as the extreme precipitation threshold to reduce the influence of various rainfall events caused by different geographic locations; then, eight extreme precipitation indices (EPIs) were calculated to evaluate extreme precipitation in China. We found that the spatial characteristics of the eight EPIs exhibited downward trends from south to north. In the periods 1960–2017 and 2011–2100, trends in the EPIs were positive, but there were differences between different regions. In the past 58 years, the extreme precipitation increased in the northwest, southeast, and the Tibet Plateau of China, while decreased in northern China. Almost all the trends of EPIs are positive in the next two periods (2011–2055 and 2056–2100) except for some EPIs, such as intensity of extreme precipitation, which decrease in southeastern China in the second period (2056–2100). This study suggests that the frequency of extreme precipitation events in China will progressively increase, which implies that a substantial burden will be placed on social economies and terrestrial ecological processes.

Evaluation of the PERSIANN-CDR Daily Rainfall Estimates in Capturing the Behavior of Extreme Precipitation Events over China

Abstract This study evaluates the performance of a newly developed daily precipitation climate data record, called Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks–Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR), in capturing the behavior of daily extreme precipitation events in China during the period of 1983–2006. Different extreme precipitation indices, in the three categories of percentile, absolute threshold, and maximum indices, are studied and compared with the same indices from the East Asia (EA) ground-based gridded daily precipitation dataset. The results show that PERSIANN-CDR depicts similar precipitation behavior as the ground-based EA product in terms of capturing the spatial and temporal patterns of daily precipitation extremes, particularly in the eastern China monsoon region, where the intensity and frequency of heavy rainfall events are very high. However, the agreement between the datasets in dry regions such as the Tibetan Plateau in the west and the Taklamakan Desert in the northwest is not strong. An important factor that may have influenced the results is that the ground-based stations from which EA gridded data were produced are very sparse. In the station-rich regions in eastern China, the performance of PERSIANN-CDR is significant. PERSIANN-CDR slightly underestimates the values of extreme heavy precipitation.

An identification method for regional PEPEs is designed based on joint application of this definition and a spatial contiguity criterion. Between 1951 and 2010, individual-station-based PEPEs occurred mainly in Central-Eastern China (26-34°N) and South China (south of 26°N). Relatively few PEPEs were observed in the northern part of China (north of 34°N). Individual-station-based PEPEs in Central-Eastern China and South China were also typically of higher intensity and longer duration than those observed in the northern part of China. Altogether, 74 regional events are identified. The stations involved in these regional events correspond to the centers of intense precipitation associated with the event. These areas are prone to severe flooding. Of the 74 identified PEPEs, 70 occurred in the central and southern parts of eastern China (primarily the Yangtze-Huai River Valley and South China). Only 4 events occurred in the northern part of China. Regional PEPEs occurred more frequently after 1990, with higher mean intensity, longer mean duration, and larger affected areas. The 74 regional PEPEs are classified and analyzed according to occurrence time, geographical location, and the influence of typhoons. Temporal variation of extreme rainfall events in China, 1961–2009

The spatial and temporal variability of the frequency of extreme precipitation events in China for 19612009 was examined using the high quality rainfall dataset provided by the China Meteorology Administration (CMA) for 599 stations. Extreme events were defined by duration and recurrence interval, the event durations chosen were 1, 5, 10 and 30 days and the event thresholds were those associated with recurrence intervals of 1, 5 and 10 years. The results indicated that temporal variations of extreme precipitation index (EPI) showed interannual and interdecadal variability. Time series of anomalies of the nine regional EPI indices indicated that Northeast China, North China and the Yellow River basin had experienced a decreasing trend of extreme rainfall events during the last 50 years, while other six regions, namely the Yangtze River basin, Southeast Coast, South China, the Inner Mongolia, Northwest China and Tibetan Plateau, had experienced an increasing trend of extreme rainfall events. Seasonal results indicated that 95.6% of 1-day, 1-yr recurrence interval extreme rainfall events occurred from April to September in China. The possible attributions of trend and variability of extreme rainfall events at China include, but are not limited to, El Nino - Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the magnitude of East Asian Monsoon, wind circulations, as well as global warming. Where have all the showers gone? Regional declines in light precipitation events in China, 1960–2000

AbstractChina has seen a decline in recorded precipitation events over 1960–2000. We find that this decline is mainly accounted for by the decrease of light precipitation events, those with intensities of 0.1–0.3 mm/day. The annual number of light precipitation events drops off remarkably around 1978 and decreases rapidly until 1985. Trace precipitation events (precipitation noted but measuring < 0.1 mm/day) decrease abruptly from 1982 through the end of the period. Meanwhile, the annual frequency of precipitation events with intensities above 0.3 mm/day shows almost no change for the same period. The analysis uses daily data from 272 stations distributed across China. We note regional and seasonal differences in the rates of change of different intensities of precipitation events. With almost no change in the frequency of precipitation events of 0.4–0.6 and 0.7–0.9 mm/day during the same period, it is difficult to attribute the abrupt decreases to inhomogeneities of the precipitation data. The temporal pattern of light precipitation events is similar to those observed for solar irradiance and total cloud cover, suggesting that there may be some connections between these climatic variables. Declines in solar irradiance and total cloud cover along with increased aerosol loading may have contributed to the abrupt decrease of these light precipitation events. However, light and trace precipitation events display different spatial and temporal patterns of change, complicating this explanation. Copyright © 2010 Royal Meteorological Society

Research on the Relationship of ENSO and the Frequency of Extreme Precipitation Events in China

Based on a daily precipitation observation dataset of 743 stations in China from 1951–2004, the Γ distribution function is used to calculate the probability distribution of daily precipitation and to define extreme precipitation events. Based on this, the relationship of ENSO and the frequency of extreme precipitation events is studied. Results reveal that ENSO events have impact on extreme precipitation events, with different magnitudes at different regions and seasons. In general, during winter and spring, extreme precipitation events occur more often during El Niño events than during La Niña events. While during summer and autumn, the opposite is found. The relationship of a two season-lag ENSO and extreme precipitation frequency shows different pattern. Extreme precipitation events occur more often in several regions if an ENSO warm phase happened in the central-eastern tropical Pacific two seasons before. No similar impacts of El Niño and La Niña on the frequency of extreme precipitation events are found. CitationLi, W., P. Zhai, and J. The observed trends in extreme precipitation events, and those in annual and seasonal mean precipitation in China during 1961–2001 are analyzed. The results show that the annual mean precipitation increases significantly in southwest, northwest, and east China, and decreases significantly in central, north and northeast China. The increasing trends in east China occurred mainly in summer, while the decreasing trends in central, north, and northeast China occurred in both spring and autumn. The increasing trends in most of northwest China occurred in all seasons. Patterns of the trends in extreme daily precipitation events are similar to those in the annual and seasonal mean precipitation except in the northwest China where most areas show increasing trends in extreme events only in summer. The extreme precipitation events in the Yangtze River basin increased dramatically by 10%–20% every 10 years in summer, consistent with the increasing trends in summer mean precipitation in the region. The circulation over East Asia shows a weakening trend in the summer monsoon over central‐east China.

Based on 740 stations of daily precipitation datasets in China, the precipitationconcentration degree (PCD) and precipitation-concentration period (PCP) of different intensity durative precipitation events were calculated to analyze their statistical characteristics, mainly including spatial and temporal distributions, variations and climatic trends of the two parameters of the durative heavy precipitation events in China. It is proved that these two parameters of heavy rainfall can display the temporal inhomogeneity in the precipitation field. And it is also found that there is a good positive relationship between the precipitation-concentration degree and annual rainfall amount in the Eastern and Central China. This method can be applied in flood assessment and climate change fields.
