Dance of Data in Pedagogical Research

This conference paper concentrates on the exploration of the interplay between statistics, probability distributions, t-tests, and the utilisation of the R language in pedagogical research. Statistics play a vital role in collecting, analysing, and interpreting data in educational research. The t-test, as a fundamental statistical tool, enables researchers to assess the significance of differences between groups, a common requirement in pedagogical studies. The integration of the R language, a powerful and flexible statistical computing tool, empowers researchers to conduct complex analyses efficiently. It acts as a bridge between statistical theory and practice, enabling the application of statistical methods to real-world educational data. This paper sheds light on the systematic approach to employing these elements, emphasising their practical importance in pedagogical research.

Measurement of Accident Risk and a Case Study from Hungary

For the cost-benefit analysis of road safety measures, it is essential to estimate the national value of statistical life. By calculating the updated values, it is possible to assess the aggregate national value of statistical life for road traffic crashes, thereby also characterizing the road safety situation in the country. It is important that the values set and the methods used are compatible with the practices of the European Member States. It must be stressed that updating the values is of major importance both for the cost-benefit analysis of the various road safety measures and for raising public and decision-makers' awareness of the huge losses. The full identification and use of loss figures is an important element of road safety. In this article we present possible methods for estimating the value of statistical life.

Processing payments, enacting alterity: financial technology in the everyday lives of asylum seekers

ABSTRACT This article examines how the Asylum Support Enablement (ASPEN) card – a prepayment card provided to UK asylum seekers – enacts their alterity in ways that problematise the techno-optimist narrative of digital technologies as promoters of financial inclusion. Drawing on analysis of 53 documents alongside 21 interviews with asylum seekers, refugees, advocacy organisations and technology providers, the article proceeds in four steps. First, we trace the migration of Prepaid Financial Services’ (PFS) prepayment technology from the humanitarian context of UNHCR’s Cash Assistance Programme in Greece to its adoption in UK state practices, considering what this means for the mobility of policy norms inscribed in digital technologies. Second, building on the concept of ‘alterity processing’, we examine how the UK Home Office discursively co-constructs asylum seekers as ‘deviant subjects’ and its bureaucratic entities as indispensable. Third, we analyse how this co-construction is used to justify asylum seekers’ exclusion from mainstream banking, rendering them dependent on the ASPEN card. Finally, we elucidate how the card’s surveillance, encoded rules, and induced precarity govern asylum seekers’ behaviours. We thus demonstrate how financial technologies – as deployed across humanitarian and statist welfare contexts – engender new lines of marginalisation and forms of social control.

Evaluation and Treatment of Sacroiliac Joint Pain in Patients with History of Vertebral Compression Fractures: A Retrospective Case Series

BACKGROUND: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) can affect the entire spinopelvic complex and cause unpredictable patterns of back pain due to their effects on spinal tensegrity and biomechanical compensation. They can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in the aging population and are difficult to diagnose. We aimed to establish a relationship between VCFs and sacroiliac (SI) joint pain. OBJECTIVES: Demonstration of SI joint (SIJ) pain relief at up to 6 months after kyphoplasty (KP) in patients with VCFs and diagnosed SI dysfunction. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: All patients were from a private chronic pain and orthopedics practice in the northeastern United States. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with VCFs diagnosed through imaging and SIJ dysfunction diagnosed through 2 diagnostic SIJ blocks who had failed conservative management were considered for KP. Numeric Rating Scale (NRS 11) scores were recorded at the baseline, after each SIJ block, and at 4 weeks and then 6 months after KP. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients underwent KP. At 4 weeks after the procedure, there was an 84% average reduction in NRS scores from the baseline (P < 0.01). At 6 months after the procedure, there was an 80% reduction in NRS scores from the baseline (P < 0.01). LIMITATIONS: Larger sample sizes and a randomized control trial would be important steps in furthering the relationship between VCFs and SIJ. CONCLUSION: VCFs can cause a referred pain pattern to the SIJ that is best treated by KP for long-term management. Inconsistencies and Challenges around 'Secularism' in Nepal

Although Nepal adopted secularism in 2015 as its official state-religion relationship, there are still several inconsistencies and challenges around it including that of freedom of religion or belief. Instead of adopting a gradual marginalization and privatization of religion as per the normative proposition of the secularism, Nepal continues to do the opposite or at times, make a fundamental departure from the notion of secular identity. The preservation and the reaffirmation of presence of religion in public sphere and preferential treatment to Hindu religion at the cost of others continues to create discrimination and pose challenges to implement secularism. These problems do not only seem to remain just non-congruent inconsistencies with the secular identity of the state at the theoretical level alone, but also seem to hinder inter-religious tolerance in practical terms such as right to freely profess, practice and preach religion, thereby impacting the lives of the religious minorities. Against this backdrop, this article examines the key legal-constitutional inconsistencies including state's practices, antagonistic socio-political narratives, and emerging challenges vis-à-vis secularism in Nepal.

Widespread analytical pitfalls in empirical coexistence studies and a checklist for improving their statistical robustness

Abstract Modern coexistence theory (MCT) offers a conceptually straightforward approach for connecting empirical observations with an elegant theoretical framework, gaining popularity rapidly over the past decade. However, beneath this surface‐level simplicity lie various assumptions and subjective choices made during data analysis. These can lead researchers to draw qualitatively different conclusions from the same set of experiments. As the predictions of MCT studies are often treated as outcomes, and many readers and reviewers may not be familiar with the framework's assumptions, there is a particular risk of ‘researcher degrees of freedom’ inflating the confidence in results, thereby affecting reproducibility and predictive power. To tackle these concerns, we introduce a checklist consisting of statistical best practices to promote more robust empirical applications of MCT. Our recommendations are organised into four categories: presentation and sharing of raw data, testing model assumptions and fits, managing uncertainty associated with model coefficients and incorporating this uncertainty into coexistence predictions. We surveyed empirical MCT studies published over the past 15 years and discovered a high degree of variation in the level of statistical rigour and adherence to best practices. We present case studies to illustrate the dependence of results on seemingly innocuous choices among competition model structure and error distributions, which in some cases reversed the predicted coexistence outcomes. These results demonstrate how different analytical approaches can profoundly alter the interpretation of experimental results, underscoring the importance of carefully considering and thoroughly justifying each step taken in the analysis pathway. Our checklist serves as a resource for authors and reviewers alike, providing guidance to strengthen the empirical foundation of empirical coexistence analyses. As the field of empirical MCT shifts from a descriptive, trailblazing phase to a stage of consolidation, we emphasise the need for caution when building upon the findings of earlier studies. To ensure that progress made in the field of ecological coexistence is based on robust and reliable evidence, it is crucial to subject our predictions, conclusions and generalisability to a more rigorous assessment than is currently the trend.

Dentist: Quantifying uncertainty by sampling points around maximum likelihood estimates

AbstractIt is standard statistical practice to provide measures of uncertainty around parameter estimates. Unfortunately, this very basic and necessary enterprise is often absent in macroevolutionary studies using maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs).dentist is an R package that allows an approximation of confidence intervals (CI) around parameter estimates without an analytic solution to likelihood equations. This package works by ‘denting’ the likelihood surface by sampling points a specified distance around the MLE following what is essentially a Metropolis‐Hastings walk.We describe the importance of estimating uncertainty around parameter estimates, as well as demonstrate the ability of dentist to accurately approximate CI.We introduce several plotting tools to visualize the results of a dentist analysis. dentist is freely available fromhttps://github.com/bomeara/dentist, written in the R language, and can be used for any given likelihood function.

Introduction to Everyday Internationalism: Socialist–South Connections and Mass Culture during the Cold War

AbstractThis Special Issue brings together scholars working in a variety of contexts to explore the concepts of solidarity and socialist internationalism as a mass phenomenon. While recent scholarship has begun to document linkages between the socialist and (post)colonial world during the Cold War, most of this work has eschewed a focus on the mass, social experience of internationalism, instead emphasizing the transformative role played by small groups of mobile elites. But if the direct experience of socialist internationalism was limited to a privileged few, how then was it experienced by the majority, for whom actual travel outside of their state was a distant possibility? This issue explores how socialist internationalism and its attendant practices of solidarity functioned within and between socialist societies. Where it does take border-transcending groups as its subject, it explores the socio-historical, everyday implications of this transnational story. For much of the Cold War, state and party-led practices of internationalism were a central component of everyday life, but little is known about these practices as they manifested on the ground. To shed light on this, this Special Issue explores how depictions of solidarity manifested in mass culture; how everyday practices emerged out of socialist internationalism and anti-imperialism; and how institutions that sought to bridge gaps between societies through solidarity emerged and then transformed or disappeared after 1989.

Religion, Pluralism, and the Australian State after Same-Sex Marriage

Abstract Since the passing of same-sex marriage legislation in 2017, religious freedom has become a prominent feature of Australian public debate. Overwhelmingly, such debates are conducted within a human rights framework where principles such as individual autonomy and protection from discrimination are prioritized over the communal and associational elements of religious life. This in turn tends to augment the power of the state vis-à-vis religious communities and institutions. In important respects, the dominance of human rights represents a new manifestation of the kind of “liberal-statism”—a public philosophy of liberal individualism that accepts the primacy of the state in the management of cultural and religious diversity—that has been a central feature of Australian religion–state relations over time. After some historical discussion of Australian church–state practice, this article argues for a reconsideration of a largely overlooked approach deriving from the English pluralists of the early twentieth century, which promoted greater degrees of group autonomy in relation to a rapidly growing state. It is argued that this tradition has greater potential in responding to the religious diversity of our time than does the current human rights approach with its tendency to reinforce an individualistic or privatized conception of religion, diminish associational life, and thereby reinforce state power.

The politics of (un)counting international migration in Senegal and the Gambia

ABSTRACT Since the European ‘migration crisis’ in 2015, various actors in politics, media and science have called for better data as a basis to efficiently manage migration. This includes a rising demand for more reliable, timely and comparable statistics on the international movement of people, especially on the African continent. International Organizations (IOs) have responded by offering various forms of ‘capacity building’ to their member states. The article looks at the development of statistical knowledge production in Senegal and the Gambia, exploring how interventions by IOs have changed statistical data practices in West Africa. West Africa is a particularly interesting case because, until recently, most post-colonial states did not generate census or survey data on questions of international migration, citizenship or ethnicity. Drawing on recent works in Science and Technology Studies on the performative power of numbers and categories, the article argues that changing data practices have enacted multiple conflicting migration realities in West Africa. Looking at IOs’ epistemic interventions in Senegal and the Gambia, the article offers insights into the ontological politics of counting and categorizing migration in a post-colonial context. It also contributes to a better understanding of the co-production of statistical knowledge and programs of migration management.

United States Physicians' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Meningococcal Vaccination for Healthy Adolescents and Young Adults

PurposeThe United States Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends vaccination against meningococcal serogroups A, C, W, and Y (MenACWY) for all 11–12-year-olds, with a booster dose for 16-year-olds, and against meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) for 16–23-year-olds under shared clinical decision-making (SCDM). However, uptake of the MenB vaccine and the MenACWY booster dose is low. This study investigated United States physicians' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding recommending MenB and MenACWY vaccines to non-high-risk older adolescents and young adults. MethodsAn online survey was conducted in April–May 2022 among pediatricians, family physicians (FPs), general practitioners (GPs), and internists who had recommended the MenB and/or the MenACWY vaccine(s) to at least one 16–23-year-old in the past year. ResultsAmong 407 participants, 50% correctly identified MenB as the leading cause of meningococcal disease among adolescents and young adults. Furthermore, 46% of physicians (47% of pediatricians, 40% of FPs and GPs, 53% of internists) answered correctly that MenB vaccination is recommended under SCDM, and 82% of physicians (96% of pediatricians, 70% of FPs and GPs, 65% of internists) answered correctly that MenACWY vaccination is routinely recommended. Among MenB-vaccinators, 78% reported having received some training or other information on implementing SCDM, and 65% rated recommending MenB vaccination as very important. DiscussionKnowledge gaps, which varied by specialty, were identified regarding meningococcal disease and vaccine recommendations, particularly regarding MenB. Targeted education of physicians may facilitate discussions about MenB vaccination.

Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child? A Critical Discourse Analysis of State Corporal Punishment Policies and Practices

Corporal punishment (CP), or inflicting pain through spanking, hitting, and paddling, is still legally sanctioned and exercised in U.S. schools. We use critical discourse analysis and draw on state policy documents and data from the Office of Civil Rights to investigate which discourses pervade policy texts and how CP is practiced. These sources reveal discourses relating to morality, delinquency, and authority that draw on ideas associated with power, punishment, and control. Across all these discourses, we find color-evasive and deficit language to justify CP practices that are disproportionally applied to minoritized students. We conclude with policy implications for CP and school discipline more broadly.

The effectiveness of legal framework of Arctic vessel-source black carbon governance.

The Arctic is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, of which vessel-source black carbon aerosols serving as a prominent catalyst for these changes. This situation is poised to worsen as sea ice melts and shipping lanes change. Rapid action aimed at mitigating short-term climate forcing factors can yield almost immediate climate benefits in the Arctic. This article provides an overview of the legal framework governing black carbon in the Arctic, considering three distinct perspectives: the global, regional, and national dimensions. These perspectives encompass global forums represented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), with a focus on recent developments concerning black carbon governance, notably the amendments to MARPOL Annex VI and Annex I. Regionally, forums represented by the Arctic Council and the European Union are examined. Black carbon emissions exhibit migratory characteristics, yet the primary legal responsibilities for emission reduction are concentrated within Arctic states. Therefore, this article also delves into the laws and practices of Arctic coastal states in their efforts to combat black carbon emissions, using Canada and Norway as examples. The analysis of institutional effectiveness in this article indicates that, at present, specialized legislation on black carbon is either vague or non-existent. The current Arctic ship-source black carbon governance system faces issues related to leadership ambiguity in its institutional structure, a limited scope of responsible entities, and a lack of diverse implementation measures. Simultaneously, the governance system is questioned for having weak or non-legally binding regulations at the level of legal enforcement. The article anticipates the introduction of more mandatory regulations while also encouraging the selection of non-coercive policy tools. Accordingly, this article argues that a coordinated governance system centered on IMO and the Arctic Council needs to be established. Such a framework should adopt a more inclusive approach to stimulate positive interactions between regulations, aiming to create a broader winning alliance based on the existing foundations.

Good Statistical Practice—development of tailored Good Clinical Practice training for statisticians

BackgroundStatisticians are fundamental in ensuring clinical research, including clinical trials, are conducted with quality, transparency, reproducibility and integrity. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is an international quality standard for the conduct of clinical trials research. Statisticians are required to undertake training on GCP but existing training is generic and, crucially, does not cover statistical activities. This results in statisticians undertaking training mostly unrelated to their role and variation in awareness and implementation of relevant regulatory requirements with regards to statistical conduct. The need for role-relevant training is recognised by the UK NHS Health Research Authority and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).MethodsThe Good Statistical Practice (GCP for Statisticians) project was instigated by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) Registered Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) Statisticians Operational Group and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), to develop materials to enable role-specific GCP training tailored to statisticians. Review of current GCP training was undertaken by survey. Development of training materials were based on MHRA GCP. Critical review and piloting was conducted with UKCRC CTU and NIHR researchers with comment from MHRA. Final review was conducted through the UKCRC CTU Statistics group.ResultsThe survey confirmed the need and desire for the development of dedicated GCP training for statisticians. An accessible, comprehensive, piloted training package was developed tailored to statisticians working in clinical research, particularly the clinical trials arena. The training materials cover legislation and guidance for best practice across all clinical trial processes with statistical involvement, including exercises and real-life scenarios to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Comprehensive feedback was incorporated. The training materials are freely available for national and international adoption.ConclusionAll research staff should have training in GCP yet the training undertaken by most academic statisticians does not cover activities related to their role. The Good Statistical Practice (GCP for Statisticians) project has developed and extensively piloted new, role-specific, comprehensive, accessible GCP training tailored to statisticians working in clinical research, particularly the clinical trials arena. This role-specific training will encourage best practice, leading to transparent and reproducible statistical activity, as required by regulatory authorities and funders.

Practices of Buying Chicken According to Imam Syafi'i's Views in Traditional Markets

Buying and selling is the exchange of goods or objects with agreements or conditions that have been agreed upon. In this buying and selling there are conditions and pillars that must be carried out, there are also provisions for the conditions themselves according to the imams, one of whom is Imam Shafi'i. This research discusses the practice of buying and selling broiler chickens according to the views of Imam Syafi'i in traditional markets (Case Study of Pandan Jaya Village, Geragai District, East Tanjung Jabung District). The problem in this research is first, what is the practice of buying and selling broiler chickens in the traditional market in Pandan Jaya Village?, second, what is Imam Syafi'i's view of the practice of buying and selling broiler chickens?The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a case study approach. The data collection methods used were observation, interviews and documents and data sources were obtained from primary and secondary data. The results of this research are that the buying and selling practices that occur in the traditional market of Pandan Jaya Village in transactions do not have a feeling of mutual liking or sincerity, this is due to fraud and the attitudes of both parties (seller and buyer). Imam Syafi'i's view of the practice of buying and selling broiler chickens states that buying and selling is permitted, then he explained that there are pillars and conditions that must be met. Meanwhile, there is one pillar that is not fulfilled, namely the contract (ijab qabul) which is not carried out consensually or sincerely

The Chinese surveillance state in Latin America? Evidence from Argentina and Ecuador

Western authors fear that Chinese exports of surveillance technologies to Global South countries may lead to reproduction of the problematic surveillance practices that the Chinese state practices within its borders. However, much of this literature is not based on empirically-grounded research. To examine such concerns, we investigated two surveillance projects built in Argentina and Ecuador in cooperation with Chinese enterprises—JSeI in Argentina and ECU 911 in Ecuador. Based on empirical evidence, we argue for a more situated and differentiated approach for examining such projects that considers the distributed agency among local and Chinese actors, as well as the economic, social, and political factors that led to their deployment.

Physical Properties of Soil in Relation to Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity of Soils Under Selected Land Use Practices in Akwa Ibom State

This study assessed the effects of land use types on selected physical properties of soil in Akwa Ibom State, south-south Nigeria. Four land use types, intensive cultivated land (ICL), natural forest (NF), oil palm plantation (OPP) and gmelina plantation (GP), were considered. Each land use was represented by three profile pits which were sampled according to genetic horizons for laboratory analysis. Data generated were analyzed statistically using descriptive and regression analyses. The results showed that ICL had the highest bulk density (Bd) ( 1.7g/cm3) followed by NF and OPP (1.6g/cm3) while GP had the least (1.5g/cm3), OPP had the highest total porosity (Tp) (43.7%) followed by GP (42.6%), NF (41.1%) while ICL had the least (36.2%), ICL and NF had the highest water stable aggregates (WSA) (12.9%) followed by OPP (8.3%) while GP had the least (4.3%). However, OPP had the highest saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) (8.4cm/h) followed by NF (8.2cm/h) while ICL and GP had the least (4.3cm/h). Result further showed that Ksat was significantly correlated with clay with r2 value of 0.53 (Ƿ˂ 0.01). Across the four land use types, Ksat was moderately rapid. Irrespective of land use type, soils were dominated by sand-sized fraction which generally decreased with depth, reflecting the influence of the parent material(coastal plain sands). This study shows that the land use types were similar in their effects on Ksat but there were no significant differences.

Dream incorporation of three different bodily stimuli

Introduction Lucid dreaming opens the possibility to rehearse sport skills within a dream while sleeping (Peters et al. 2023; Stumbrys et al. 2016). But so far, no induction techniques have been developed to induce reliable lucid dreams. One potential technique is to apply external stimulation while a person is sleeping in order to send a hint into the dream which might enhance lucidity in the ongoing dream. Several studies have tested dream incorporation rates (DIR) with different stimuli and different results (Schredl, 2018), but none with a larger sample size and a within-design. Furthermore, in this study we wanted to explore body related stimulations to evoke in future studies lucid dreams. Methods 10-Channel polysomnography and three different bodily stimulation methods were combined during three consecutive test nights with each night using one stimulation method (plus adaptation night). The three stimulation methods consisted of electrical forearm muscle stimulation (EMS), galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), and haptic vibration stimulation (HS). During REM sleep, one of the three stimuli was presented or a sham condition was applied in a counterbalanced order. The stimuli were followed by REM awakenings, resulting in corresponding verbal dream reports. With the help of those reports, the translation from a physical arm movement, vestibular sensation and vibration into the dream environment was investigated using dream content analysis. Movement of the dream arm, balance related activity and tactile or somatosensory sensations targeted the dream incorporations of EMS, GVS and HS respectively. Results Movement of the arm was present in 23.2%, 8.1% and 23.5% of EMS, GVS and HS dreams respectively. Balance-related activity was present in 6.1%, 7.9% and 5.8% of EMS, GVS and HS dreams respectively. Finally, tactile and somatosensory sensations were present in 13.6%, 0% and 6.3% of the EMS, GVS and HS dreams respectively. After correcting for sham condition, tactile and somatosensory sensations on the EMS dreams seem to be the strongest incorporation effect upon stimulation. Discussion/Conclusion We tested dream incorporation of three different stimulation methods using a within-design on a larger sample size, a method that has never been attempted before. GVS appears unsuccessful in altering dream content, but this might be confounded due to challenges in methodology. EMS evokes the most dream incorporation in the scale of tactile and somatosensory dream content followed by HS. The investigation of the incorporation of external kinesthetic stimulation into dream content represents a fundamental contribution to various scientific fields and could foster future research on lucid dream induction, enabling the further exploration of sport practice in a sleep state.

Relevance and effectiveness of primary school teachers’ professional development policy and practices in Oromia regional state, Ethiopia

The study evaluated the relevance and effectiveness of primary school teachers’ professional development policy and practices in Oromia Regional State. The researcher used a mixed method with concurrent triangulation design. The researcher selected a total of 618 samples of the study using different sampling techniques such as purposive, convenience, stratified, and simple random sampling techniques. The data were collected from primary sources of data such as teachers, mentors, principals, supervisors, coordinating committees, and parents using questionnaires, interview, focus group discussion, document examination, and observation. The researcher analyzed the data using mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA and post-hoc test, and thematic narration. The findings of study showed that teachers’ professional development practices were powerless to update professional competencies and improve professional and innovative pedagogical practices in classrooms. Primary school teachers were not learning proficiently from continuous professional development practices to ensure basic and specific professional competencies required in classrooms. The implementations of reflective activities such as action researches, classroom observation, differentiated learning, collaborative learning, microteaching, and lesson studies couldn’t contribute to practical changes. The study forecasts the requirement of context specific policy framework and practical toolkit for newly deployed and experienced teachers rather than focusing on the generic policy document.
