ESG strategy in the supply chain considering ownership structures

Firms with higher ESG ratings typically exhibit greater efficiency in resource utilization, thereby promoting sustainable development. The ownership structure of a supply chain influences corporate behavior, affecting both overall performance and ESG information management practices. This paper employs a Stackelberg model to explore ESG information management strategies within supply chains characterized by different ownership structures, specifically comparing vertical and horizontal configurations. Our findings indicate that when retailers possess a dominant market position alongside a shareholding manufacturer, the incentive to enhance ESG information levels significantly increases as the shareholding ratio rises. Moreover, the held manufacturer shifts from a focus on price-based competition to quality-based competition. We establish a benchmark model, and our analysis demonstrates that, relative to the benchmark scenario, manufacturers in both ownership structures exhibit a stronger motivation to improve ESG information levels. Accordingly, manufacturers are advised to develop ESG information management strategies that are tailored to their specific ownership structure, shareholding ratio, and the investment cost coefficient associated with ESG information enhancements.

An Assessment of Information Management Practices and the Containment of Financial Crimes in Nigeria

This paper assesses the effects of information management practices on the containment of financial crimes in Nigeria. A cross-sectional research design was used to examine the relationship between the variables of the study. A total of 454 structured questionnaires were administered to the compliance department’s staff of CBN, DMBS, EFCC, and NFIU. Data collected were subjected to various diagnostic tests such as normality, reliability, and validity using IBM-SPSS V.26 software. Single and multiple linear regression analyses were employed for interpretation of data. The study found a significant influence existed between information management practices (IM), while a non-significant influence existed between the dependent variable of the study. The result for multiple regression analysis indicates that IM are very significant variables influencing the containment of financial crimes in Nigeria. The study recommends that reporting entities (REs) and law enforcement agencies (LEAs) should ensure that their information management practices are robust and sufficient. This will aid the containment of financial crimes in Nigeria. The IV is proxied by information quality, information accessibility, information security, information governance, information usage, and user satisfaction, while the containment of FCs is proxied by money laundering and terrorism finance.

Mapping the fine spatial distribution of global offshore surface seawater mariculture using remote sensing big data

ABSTRACT Against the backdrop of near-saturation in global marine capture fisheries, current mariculture production now exceeds one-third of capture production and continues to hold significant growth potential. However, the lack of spatially detailed global offshore surface seawater mariculture (OSSM) data hampers scientific understanding and management from a spatial perspective. In this study, utilizing multi-source remote sensing time-series imagery, we achieve the world’s first spatially detailed mapping of both raft and cage mariculture types. The results show that (1) in 2020, the total global OSSM area was 20,079.97 km², comprising 85.04% raft mariculture and 14.96% cage mariculture. 95.33% of the OSSM was concentrated in Asia. (2) The interpreted national OSSM areas align well with the FAO production statistics trends. Obtaining these areas using remote sensing offers greater timeliness compared to production statistics, which is advantageous for dynamic monitoring and production estimation. (3) Through analysis of global pond aquaculture data, it was found that most coastal areas worldwide had a single-type of aquaculture. However, in parts of Asia, regions with both OSSM and pond aquaculture coexisted. The data acquired in this study, characterized by detailed spatial information, provide significant insights for constructing spatial models of mariculture, researching resource-environment effects, and informing management practices.

New approaches to wildlife health.

Recent environmental change and biodiversity loss have modified ecosystems, altering disease dynamics. For wildlife health, this trend has translated into increased potential for disease transmission and reduced capacity to overcome significant population-level impacts, which may place species at risk of extinction. Thus, current approaches to wildlife health focus not on the absence of disease but rather on the concept of health promotion. That is, wildlife populations will be more resilient to disease if they have the basic requirements for survival, as well as functioning ecosystems, within an enabling socio-economic environment. In this context, animal health programmes must adapt to design and implement wildlife health programmes that bridge knowledge gaps and fully integrate conservation goals. This article proposes new pathways and additions to the animal health management toolbox, including new approaches to surveillance and information management, partnerships and new wildlife health management practices. Solely because of risks to domesticated animals and human health, the traditional approach to disease surveillance in wild animals has now been replaced by a drive to recognise the intrinsic value of wildlife and the extended benefits of actively pursuing ecosystem health and associated life-sustaining ecosystem services. In this context, it is paramount to transition to holistic health programmes that embrace One Health as a pathway to set the health of all on equal footing.

Soft Red Winter Wheat Elite Germplasm Screening and Evaluation for Stripe Rust in the US Southeast Region

Stripe rust is a severe disease affecting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the United States Southeast region, necessitating the identification of resistant sources. The study was conducted at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and utilized a Randomized Block Design over three years. A total of 1130 lines were inoculated annually, and their responses for stripe rust were recorded. The results revealed that 11%, 79%, and 77% of the lines showed resistance in the first, second, and third years, respectively, with an overall 50% of the whole population. Linear Mixed Model and Generalized Estimating Equation analyses highlighted environmental influences, with cooler, humid conditions in 2021 favoring stripe rust, while warmer, variable conditions in 2022 and stable weather in 2023 contributed to lower disease severity. Data analysis of infection rates and disease development indicated that the newer generations of wheat lines tested in 2022 and 2023 exhibited higher resistance lines, lower infection rates, and slower disease progression. The findings support targeted breeding strategies for durable stripe rust resistance, emphasizing the importance of multi-environment testing and selection of lines with adult-plant resistance traits. This research offers valuable insights for breeders, agronomists, and farmers aiming to mitigate stripe rust impact through improved cultivars and informed management practices.

Unlocking financial innovation through strategic investments in information management: a systematic review

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore strategic investment in information management and its crucial role in driving financial innovation. By examining the integration of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Blockchain, Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Large Language Models (LLMs), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersecurity Technologies, and Quantum Computing, this research aims to highlight how these technologies enhance decision-making, operational effectiveness, risk management, and compliance within the financial sector.MethodologyThe study employs a comprehensive literature review of existing research to analyze the impact of strategic investment in information management on financial innovation. Key technologies are identified and their applications in finance are discussed. The methodology includes synthesizing findings from various sources to present a cohesive understanding of the relationship between information management, technology, and financial innovation.ResultsThe results indicate that strategic investment in information management significantly enhances financial innovation by leveraging advanced technologies. AI and ML improve predictive analytics and customer personalization, Blockchain ensures secure transactions and transparency, Big Data Analytics enables data-driven decision-making, and Cloud Computing provides scalable solutions. LLMs enhance natural language processing capabilities, RPA automates repetitive tasks, IoT facilitates real-time monitoring, Cybersecurity Technologies protect financial data, and Quantum Computing offers potential breakthroughs in financial modeling and encryption.ImplicationThe implications of this study suggest that financial institutions should prioritize strategic investments in information management and the adoption of advanced technologies to stay competitive and resilient in the evolving financial landscape. A Study on User Privacy Information Sharing and Boundary Management on Social Media

This article aims to study and analyze issues related to user privacy information sharing and limitation management on social media. It examines the actions users take regarding information sharing in various situations and proposes effective privacy management measures to help users better secure their personal privacy. Based on survey data, the analysis makes two key assumptions: first, there is a negative correlation between users’ reception of privacy management policies and the frequency of experiencing privacy information leaks; second, there is a positive correlation between the reception of privacy management policies and users’ privacy management actions. The analysis reveals several findings: privacy information management practices are generally prevalent among social media users, users face significant challenges in managing privacy information, and most social media users have experienced personal privacy information leaks. These insights are crucial for understanding privacy management actions in social media environments and for developing effective privacy management policies.

Community science can inform invasive species management: Melaleuca (Myrtaceae) in South Africa

Abstract Community science initiatives are revolutionising our ability to detect and respond to biological invasions. Non‐native trees and shrubs are among the world's most damaging invasive species and community science data can be used to inform protocols for managing these invasions. This study explores the utility of iNaturalist in informing management practices for the widely cultivated and naturalised genus Melaleuca L. (Myrtaceae; here including the genus Callistemon) in South Africa. We applied data from iNaturalist to assess the distribution and invasion ecology of Melaleuca species in South Africa. Melaleucas, first recorded in South Africa in 1882, have been widely used as garden ornamentals and street trees in the country for over 50 years. Naturalisation of melaleucas in South Africa was first reported in 1998 and the first records of naturalisation/invasiveness for other species are accumulating rapidly. Data on all Melaleuca species in South Africa were downloaded from iNaturalist and analysed using Geographic Information System software. In September 2023, iNaturalist had 3221 records of melaleucas across the country. After checking and filtering, and applying criteria to increase reliability, 2815 records remained, with confirmed identifications of 26 species. These species were recorded in a total of 138 quarter‐degree cells (QDCs) in South Africa (7% of the country); Research Grade (RG, wild‐growing) records occurred in 21 QDCs, records of cultivated plants in 75 QDCs, and 42 QDCs had records of both cultivated and wild‐growing plants. An Invasiveness Index was calculated for each species in the country, provinces, and municipalities, to show which species are already invasive or have substantial invasion debt. Thirty‐two percent of the filtered records were RG (naturalised). The municipality with the highest number of records is the City of Cape Town, with 43% RG records. iNaturalist provided useful information on the occurrence of five Melaleuca species for which no information was available before this study was undertaken. Case studies of invaded habitats highlight that melaleucas have the potential to alter ecosystems incurring substantial control costs. Practical implications: Our study highlights the value of community science data in the detection, monitoring, and management of invasive plant species.

Comparing the Sources of Sediment Retained by Beaver Dams and Beaver Dam Analogs

AbstractBeavers modify riverine systems by building dams that alter downstream fluxes of water and sediment. Where beavers have been lost and stream channels degraded, beaver dam analogs (BDAs) are being used to mimic the effects of beaver engineering. Central to the success of these structures in accelerating stream recovery is creating similar ecosystem responses as beaver dams including sediment retention. Unknown is the relative importance of beaver actions versus erosion in the catchment in generating the retained sediment. This study tested the viability of sediment fingerprinting to determine the source of sediment retained by beaver dams and BDAs in a watershed in Alberta, Canada. Concentrations of 29 elements were measured as potential tracers from known sediment sources: upland, terrace, stream bank, and beaver canal. Virtual mixture tests, used to compare the computed source estimates with known source mixtures, revealed that sediment fingerprinting is a robust method for identifying sources of sediment retained by beaver ponds and BDAs. The un‐mixing model results indicate that on average 56% of the sediment retained by the beaver dams originated from terraces, 23% from uplands, and 13% from beaver canals. About 89% of sediment retained by the BDAs originated from eroding stream banks. We conclude that the geomorphic effects of beavers and their dams are more diverse, resulting in more diverse sources of sediment retained by their dams. This differentiates beaver dams from BDAs. The study has implications for informing management practices that involve beavers and beaver mimicry.

Leveraging SWOT Analysis in IS/IT Strategy for Enhancing Hospital Quality

The research conducted at the Datu Sanggul Hospital in Rantau focuses on developing a strategic plan for enhancing the quality of healthcare services through Information System (IS) and Information Technology (IT) implementation. The study aims to address the challenges faced by the hospital in optimizing its Management Information System and Medical Record (SIM & RM) unit. By utilizing the Ward & Peppard framework, the research progresses through stages including problem formulation, data collection, and strategy formulation. Through interviews, focus group discussions, and data analysis, the current business strategies and IT infrastructure are evaluated. External factors such as PEST analysis and Five Forces analysis are also considered to understand the hospital's position in the industry. The findings from these analyses serve as inputs for the SWOT analysis, which helps in identifying the hospital's current standing and areas for improvement. The study further delves into developing IS business strategies and IT roadmap planning based on critical success factors and business needs. By aligning IS/IT strategies with business goals, the research aims to provide recommendations for enhancing the hospital's information system infrastructure and management practices.

Mating system, morphological and genetic evidence endorse clonality as an essential reproductive mode in Daphnopsis filipedunculata (Thymelaeaceae), a dioecious and endemic species from the Amazon.

Background and Aims: Clonality is characterized by the formation of independent individuals of the same genotype that are capable of reproducing and propagating vegetatively. Although clonality is an important mechanism that facilitates the persistence of a population, its extensive use can lead to negative impacts on sexual reproduction due to trade-offs in the investment of resources. Therefore, studies on the sexual reproduction of species that exhibit clonality can provide information about resilience to environmental changes, information about fecundity, the risk of the absence of pollinators and the ability to persist in unfavourable conditions and to successfully occupy new areas. Here, we investigated the role of clonal propagation and sexual reproduction in Daphnopsis filipedunculata (Thymelaeaceae), a dioecious species distributed only in Serra dos Carajás. Methods: We evaluated the extent of clonality in this species using molecular tools and anatomical analyses of the underground system responsible for developing new ramets. Furthermore, we analysed the sexual system and its contribution to reproductive success through morphometric analyses of floral types and pollination experiments in the field. Key Results: Overall, we found that clonal propagation plays an important role in maintaining the population of D. filipedunculata. Specifically, we demonstrated that this species presents functional male and female plants, indicating that D. filipedunculata is an obligate xenogamous species but has low reproductive success. We also showed that clonal vegetative propagation is the main form of asexual reproduction in this species, with roots responsible for clonal growth. Finally, our results indicated that this species presents an intermediate phalanx-guerrilla clonal architecture. Conclusions: Our study provides the first insights into sexual reproduction and clonal propagation in D. filipedunculata and can inform management practices, conservation and the restoration of endemic species.

Organizational Trade Secrets and Organisational Performance: Leveraging Technical Information for Competitive Edge in Small Scale Businesses

This study examines the impact of organizational trade secrets and organizational performance, focusing on technical information management practices and competitive edge as sub-variables in measuring the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. Utilizing a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from 108 SMEs using structured questionnaires. The analysis, conducted through SPSS software, includes descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analyses to assess the relationship between technical information management practices and competitive edge. Findings reveal that robust cybersecurity measures, the use of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and regular employee training on intellectual property are the most prevalent and influential practices. These practices significantly correlate with improved financial results, market share, customer satisfaction, and innovation rates. The regression analysis confirms that technical information management practices collectively explain a substantial portion of the variance in organizational performance. The study underscores the importance of strategic technical information management for enhancing the competitive edge and achieving sustainable growth in SMEs. Recommendations include enhancing cybersecurity measures, enforcing NDAs, conducting regular employee training, documenting technical information, seeking legal advice on intellectual property, and regularly evaluating management practices to ensure they contribute effectively to organizational performance

Advancing digital archival practices in Oman: challenges, opportunities, and prospects for the future

ABSTRACT Digital preservation is widely recognized as a critical necessity for organizations worldwide. Archival professionals consider it a pressing issue, recognizing its central role in contemporary information management practices. This study aims to illuminate the challenges and opportunities in this field, specifically focusing on the accessibility and preservation of institutional archives in the Sultanate of Oman. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, it includes an extensive review of relevant literature and semi-structured interviews with administrative personnel from various public organizations in Oman. A purposive sampling strategy was employed to select 10 individuals, each possessing the required expertise and experience in this field, from different government agencies to participate in these interviews. The findings indicate that professionals in Omani institutions highly value digital preservation, citing reasons such as enhanced document accessibility, improved organizational efficiency and security, and compliance with national archival regulations. Despite this, the methods used for digital preservation vary across institutions. The study identifies several obstacles, including threats to digital security, the complexity of managing vast amounts of data, the rapid outdatedness of technology, and challenges related to human resource management.

Emerging South African smart cities: Data security and privacy risks and challenges

Background: Smart cities leverage advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), fifth generation (5G) networks, and data analytics to enhance citizens’ quality of life, focussing on creating efficient, functional, and eco-friendly urban environments. While these initiatives offer significant benefits, there are ongoing concerns about data security and privacy.Objectives: This article investigates the data security and privacy risks and challenges in emerging South African smart cities. The objectives are to identify these risks, assess the effectiveness of current security measures, and contextualise these vulnerabilities within the South African and global contexts.Method: A qualitative approach was adopted, involving virtual interviews with 20 Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) through purposive and snowball sampling. The raw data were thematically analysed, revealing significant themes.Results: Emerging South African smart cities face several risks and challenges, including poor governance, a shortage of skills, a lack of awareness and training, insufficient funding, and a combination of these factors.Conclusion: The research highlights the importance of safeguarding individuals’ data and privacy in the context of smart cities, advocating the need for proactive measures to address these concerns.Contribution: This article promotes interdisciplinary dialogue, leading to more comprehensive solutions. In addition, exploring data security and privacy in emerging smart cities aids in understanding the implications of information management practices. Although the article focuses on emerging South African smart cities, the challenges discussed have global relevance.

Ad-hocability: crisis management centres following the Hamas attack on Israel

ABSTRACT On 7 October 2023, Hamas launched an unprovoked attack on Israel, which resulted in immediate mayhem and chaos. Within hours, hundreds of civilian crisis management centres were created by activists and volunteers, many of them assisted successfully in a variety of areas. This article examined the information management practices of eight centres, using semi-structured interviews. Two factors contributed to the crisis management centres’ success: their ad hoc nature and the use of readily available, easy-to-use technology for the management, sharing, and organisation of information. The article highlights the benefits and efficacy of employing more straightforward and readily available technical solutions in crisis management.

Water Contaminant Detection and Water Purification of Household Drinking Water Using a New Stacking Ensemble Model

ABSTRACTContaminated drinking water sources pose a significant health risk worldwide. Monitoring programs for drinking water quality aims to ensure safe water supply by informing management practices. Improved online monitoring of water systems is necessary as current lab‐based methods are slow and do not offer real‐time public health protection. Rapid detection and response to potential contamination events are crucial to mitigate health risks. Mark of‐purpose water treatment strategies offer a reasonable method for upgrading drinking water quality at the family level and forestalling waterborne illnesses. This study focuses on collecting household drinking water and utilizing various sensors to measure parameters such as pH, turbidity, water level, temperature, and humidity. A consistent water quality noticing system using the stacking outfit model, which solidifies Bayesian association and decision tree techniques, is proposed in this article. Bayesian network analyzes the input data attained from sensors collecting real‐time data and concludes whether the data represents the contamination event. DTs are utilized to demonstrate the connections between multivariate water boundaries utilized in the review. Afterward, a multiobjective, such as a biobjective optimization model and a nondominated genetic algorithm (NGA) are used in this work of optimization to minimize the volume of contaminated water. After the pollution in the water is identified, water decontamination processes are done given point of purpose medicines like ceramic channels and solar water disinfection (SODIS). The method outlined is executed through Python software. The findings indicate that the estimated values for PH, temperature, and turbidity are 7.3, 31.8, and 0.77, respectively. However, the proposed method is compared with the existing C‐NSGA‐II, while compared to this method, the proposed system produces improved cost functions. Consequently, suitable water treatment and supply should be considered to reduce the effects on people's health as well as to improve living conditions, respectively.

Current understanding and future prospects for ash dieback disease with a focus on Britain

Abstract Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is an introduced ascomycete fungus which causes ash dieback and has resulted in widespread mortality of ash throughout Europe. Although H. fraxineus has been present on the continent for at least four decades, it was not identified until 2006. The first record of the pathogen in Britain came in 2012 although it was probably present a decade earlier. The most common host European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is economically and ecologically important to Britain where the cost of ash dieback is estimated at billions of pounds. The impact of ash dieback has stimulated a major research response which we review with the aim of providing up-to-date information relevant to Britain and identifying knowledge gaps where research would contribute to improved disease mitigation. Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is an outcrossing fungus with high genotypic diversity; ascospores produced via sexual reproduction are critical to aerial dispersal and infection. Temperature, moisture, and ground cover influence pathogen fruit body development, the timing of ascospore release, and extent of ascospore germination; they also interact together to affect the likelihood of infection. In addition, stand characteristics, including tree density, tree height, and landscape fragmentation, affect disease dynamics with increased disease severity on moist sites with high ash density. Efforts at finding natural resistance in ash have identified genetic markers associated with disease tolerance, and gene expression analysis is providing insights into the basis of that resistance. Mainland European findings indicate that ash dieback makes trees more vulnerable to other pathogens, whilst endophytes in the ash phyllosphere can suppress infection by H. fraxineus. Possible tools for long-term control of ash dieback include (1) deployment of resistant ash, (2) quantitatively informed management practices based on microclimate models and better understanding of the pathogen life cycle, and (3) manipulation of biocontrol agents from the ash microbiome or pathogen mycoviruses.

Calibrating Tropical Forest Coexistence in Ecosystem Demography Models Using Multi‐Objective Optimization Through Population‐Based Parallel Surrogate Search

AbstractTropical forest diversity governs forest structures, compositions, and influences the ecosystem response to environmental changes. Better representation of forest diversity in ecosystem demography (ED) models within Earth system models is thus necessary to accurately capture and predict how tropical forests affect Earth system dynamics subject to climate changes. However, achieving forest coexistence in ED models is challenging due to their computational expense and limited understanding of the mechanisms governing forest functional diversity. This study applies the advanced Multi‐Objective Population‐based Parallel Local Surrogate‐assisted search (MOPLS) optimization algorithm to simultaneously calibrate ecosystem fluxes and coexistence of two physiologically distinct tropical forest species in a size‐ and age‐structured ED model with realistic representation of wood harvest. MOPLS exhibits satisfactory model performance, capturing hydrological and biogeochemical dynamics observed in Barro Colorado Island, Panama, and robustly achieving coexistence for the two representative forest species. This demonstrates its effectiveness in calibrating tropical forest coexistence. The optimal solution is applied to investigate the recovery trajectories of forest biomass after various intensities of clear‐cut deforestation. We find that a 20% selective logging can take approximately 40 years for aboveground biomass to return to the initial level. This is due to the slow recovery rate of late successional trees, which only increases by 4% over the 40‐year period. This study lays the foundation to calibrate coexistence in ED models. MOPLS can be an effective tool to help better represent tropical forest diversity in Earth system models and inform forest management practices.

“That looks like something I would do”: understanding humanities researchers’ digital hoarding behaviors in digital scholarship

PurposeIn the era of digital intelligence, individuals are increasingly interacting with digital information in their daily lives and work, and a growing phenomenon known as digital hoarding is becoming more prevalent. Prior research suggests that humanities researchers have unique and longstanding information interaction and management practices in the digital scholarship context. This study therefore aims to understand how digital hoarding manifests in humanities researchers’ behavior, identify the influencing factors associated with it, and explore how they perceive and respond to digital hoarding behavior.Design/methodology/approachQualitative research methods enable us to acquire a rich insight and nuanced understanding of digital hoarding practices. In this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 humanities researchers who were pre-screened for a high propensity for digital hoarding. Thematic analyses were then used to analyze the interview data.FindingsThree main characteristics of digital hoarding were identified. Further, the research paradigm, digital affordance, and personality traits and habits, collectively influencing the emergence and development of digital hoarding behaviors, were examined. The subtle influence of traditional Chinese culture was encountered. Interestingly, this study found that humanists perceive digital hoarding as a positive expectation (associated with inspiration, aesthetic pursuit, and uncertainty avoidance). Meanwhile, humanists' problematic perception of this behavior is more widely observed — they experience what we conceptualize as an “expectation-perception” gap. Three specific information behaviors related to avoidance were identified as aggravating factors for digital hoarding.Originality/valueThe findings deepen the understanding of digital hoarding behaviors and personal information management among humanities researchers within the LIS field, and implications for humanities researchers, digital scholarship service providers, and digital tool developers are discussed.

Factors Influencing SIMRS Quality at Al-Islam H.M Mawardi General Hospital

This quantitative study investigates the impact of organizational factors on Hospital Management Information Systems (HMIS), employing the PRISM framework. The absence of a search menu linked to the primary key of national identity number in the HMIS was scrutinized for its effects.
