Mussel-inspired thermo-switchable underwater adhesive based on a Janus hydrogel

On-demand underwater adhesives with excellent adhesive and gentle detachment properties enable stable connections to various biomedical devices and biointerfaces and avoid the risk of harmful tissue damage upon detachment. Herein, we present a Janus hydrogel adhesive that can reversibly switch its adhesion strength, which is controlled by temperature, using a thermoresponsive polymer and mussel-inspired molecules. This thermoswitchable adhesive (TSA) hydrogel displays both strong adhesion and gentle detachment with an over 1000-fold gap in underwater adhesion strength onto glass, titanium, aluminum, and Teflon substrates when exposed to temperatures above and below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The adhesion switch is possibly caused by the change in toughness of the TSA hydrogels with temperature because the Janus hydrogel possesses gradient crosslinked structures. Moreover, the lowermost surface is sufficiently soft to gently detach from the substrate below the LCST. The electrode-integrated hydrogel remains on human skin, and electrical signals are continuous over 10 min above the LCST. In contrast, commercially available hydrogel electrodes quickly swell and detach from the skin. The thermoswitchability of the TSA hydrogel, with its robust adhesion and gentle detachment, offers significant potential for biomedical applications characterized by minimally invasive procedures.

Green engineering of NiO nanoparticles decorated with Arachis hypogaea shell extract for biomedical applications

Abstract We attempted to synthesize nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs) utilizing waste Arachis hypogaea (peanut) shell extract and studied their structural, morphological, and biological performance for biomedical applications. The green engineered NiO-NPs possessed a face-centered cubic structure with an average particle size of 20 nm in highly crystalline form. NiO-NPs were shown to have an optical resonance peak at 327 nm with 3 eV as the optical band gap according to the UV–visible spectra, and the stretching band between Ni–O were evidenced from the FTIR and Raman spectrum. Utilizing green approach the stable nanoparticles were obtained with average particle size of 31 nm from SEM analysis; zeta potential value of −17.6 mV, and PDI as 0.68, revealed the formation of spherical nanoparticles with distinct morphologies without aggregation. XPS analysis confirmed the oxidation states of the elements Ni (2p) and O (1s). This approach may help to increase the surface area, increasing the possibility of nanoparticles interacting with bacterial cells. Furthermore, the presence of nickel and the oxygen oxidation state were confirmed by XPS. Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus oralis, Bacillus subtilis, and Escherichia coli were found to be susceptible to the antibacterial action of the produced NiO-NPs, with a maximal zone of inhibition of 10.25 mm at 500 μg/ml for P. vulgaris. For P. vulgaris and E. coli, the minimum inhibitory concentrations of NiO were 5.36 and 12.55 %, respectively, at 31.25 μg mL−1. We hereby claim that green engineered NiO NPs decorated with A. hypogaea shell extract have great potential for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Light-Responsive Smart Nanoliposomes: Harnessing the Azobenzene Moiety for Controlled Drug Release under Near-Infrared Irradiation.

The azobenzene moiety is an intriguing structure that deforms under UV and visible light, indicating a high potential for biomedical applications. However, its reaction to UV radiation is problematic because of its high energy and low tissue penetration. Unlike previous research on azobenzene structures in photoresponsive materials, this study presents a novel method for imparting photostimulation-responsive properties to liposomes by incorporating the azobenzene moiety and extending the light wavelength with up-conversion nanoparticles. First, the azobenzene structure was incorporated into a phospholipid molecule to create Azo-PSG, which could spontaneously form vesicle assemblies in aqueous solutions and isomerizes within 1 h of light exposure. Furthermore, orthogonal up-conversion nanoparticles with a core-shell structure were created by sequentially growing lanthanide rare earths in the shell layer, which efficiently converts near-infrared light into ultraviolet (400 nm) and blue-green (540 nm) light. Combining these core-shell structured up-conversion nanomaterials with Azo-PSG molecules resulted in the creation of a near-infrared light-responsive smart nanoliposome system. Under near-infrared light irradiation, UCNPs emit UV and blue-green light, causing conformational changes in Azo-PSG molecules that allow drug release within 6 h. The reversible structural shift of Azo-PSG in response to light stimulation holds enormous promise for improving drug release techniques. This novel technique also expands the usage of UV-responsive compounds beyond their constraints of low penetration and high biotoxicity, allowing for rapid medication release under NIR light.

Recent Advancements in High-Frequency Ultrasound Applications from Imaging to Microbeam Stimulation

Ultrasound is a versatile and well-established technique using sound waves with frequencies higher than the upper limit of human hearing. Typically, therapeutic and diagnosis ultrasound operate in the frequency range of 500 kHz to 15 MHz with greater depth of penetration into the body. However, to achieve improved spatial resolution, high-frequency ultrasound (>15 MHz) was recently introduced and has shown promise in various fields such as high-resolution imaging for the morphological features of the eye and skin as well as small animal imaging for drug and gene therapy. In addition, high-frequency ultrasound microbeam stimulation has been demonstrated to manipulate single cells or microparticles for the elucidation of physical and functional characteristics of cells with minimal effect on normal cell physiology and activity. Furthermore, integrating machine learning with high-frequency ultrasound enhances diagnostics, including cell classification, cell deformability estimation, and the diagnosis of diabetes and dysnatremia using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this paper, current efforts in the use of high-frequency ultrasound from imaging to stimulation as well as the integration of deep learning are reviewed, and potential biomedical and cellular applications are discussed.

In Situ Synthesis and Characterizations of a Strontium-Substituted Dicalcium Phosphate Anhydrous/Hydroxyapatite Biphasic Whisker and Its Properties Evaluation.

Dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA) presents good biomineralization ability, the strontium element is known for superior bone affinity, and a whisker possesses good mechanical strength; all these are beneficial for improving the drawbacks of hydroxyapatite (HAP) like weaker mechanical properties, poor biomineralization, and slower degradation/absorption. Therefore, a homogeneous precipitation was adopted to synthesize Sr-substituted and DCPA and HAP coexisting whiskers. The composition, structure, and morphology based on urea dosage and substitution content were characterized, and the roles of DCPA, Sr, and whisker shape were investigated. It turned out that Sr-DCPA/HAP biphasic products contained about 19% DCPA and 81% HAP, and both phases occupied the outer and inner parts of the whisker, respectively. Increasing the urea dosage made the morphology transform from a sea urchin shape to fiber clusters and then whiskers, while Sr substitution brought the whisker back to the porous microsphere shape. Only 5% of Sr content and 15 g of urea could maintain the whisker shape. Sr could promote the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells even at a higher extract concentration of 10 mg/mL. The cells stayed in a healthy state whether cocultured with the whisker or the microsphere. The unstable DCPA combined with the decreased crystallinity brought by Sr doping contributed to shortening the apatite deposition period to within 7 days. The whisker morphology enhanced the compressive strength of acrylic resin, and the apatite layer helped to reduce the strength loss during soaking. The Sr-DCPA/HAP biphasic whisker with enhanced overall properties possessed more promising potential for biomedical application.

Development of Scaffolds with Chitosan Magnetically Activated with Cobalt Nanoferrite: A Study on Physical-Chemical, Mechanical, Cytotoxic and Antimicrobial Behavior

Background/Objectives: This study investigates the development of 3D chitosan-x-cobalt ferrite scaffolds (x = 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%) with interconnected porosity for potential biomedical applications. The objective was to evaluate the effects of magnetic particle incorporation on the scaffolds’ structural, mechanical, magnetic, and biological properties, specifically focusing on their biocompatibility and antimicrobial performance. Methods: Scaffolds were synthesized using freeze-drying, while cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were produced via a pilot-scale combustion reaction. The scaffolds were characterized for their physical and chemical properties, including porosity, swelling, and mechanical strength. Hydrophilicity was assessed through contact angle measurements. Antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated using time kill kinetics and agar diffusion assays, and biocompatibility was confirmed through cytotoxicity tests. Results: The incorporation of cobalt ferrite increased magnetic responsiveness, altered porosity profiles, and influenced swelling, biodegradation, and compressive strength, with a maximum value of 87 kPa at 7.5 wt% ferrite content. The scaffolds maintained non-toxicity and demonstrated bactericidal activity. The optimal concentration for achieving a balance between structural integrity and biological performance was found at 7.5 wt% cobalt ferrite. Conclusions: These findings suggest that magnetic chitosan-cobalt ferrite scaffolds possess significant potential for use in biomedical applications, including tissue regeneration and advanced healing therapies. The incorporation of magnetic properties enhances both the structural and biological functionalities, presenting promising opportunities for innovative therapeutic approaches in reconstructive procedures.

Adenosine Triphosphate Inhibits Cold-Responsive Aggregation.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), ubiquitous in all living organisms, is conventionally recognized as a fundamental energy currency essential for a myriad of cellular processes. While its traditional role in energy metabolism requires only micromolar concentrations, the cellular content of ATP has been found to be significantly higher at the millimolar level. Recent studies have attempted to correlate this higher concentration of ATP with its nonenergetic role in maintaining protein homeostasis, leaving the investigation of ATP's nontrivial activities in biology an open question. Here, by coupling computer simulations and experiments, we uncover new insights into ATP's role as a cryoprotectant against cold-salt stress, highlighting the necessity for higher cellular ATP concentrations. We present direct evidence at charged silica interfaces, demonstrating ATP's ability to restore native intersurface interactions disrupted by combined cold-salt stress, thereby inhibiting cold-responsive aggregation in high-salt conditions. ATP desorbs salt cations from negatively charged surfaces through predominant interactions between ATP and the salt cations. Although the mode of ATP's action remains unchanged with temperature, the extent of interaction scales with temperature, requiring less ATP activity at lower temperatures, justifying the reason for reduction in cellular ATP content due to the cold effect, reported in previous experimental studies. The trend observed in inorganic nanostructures is recurrent and robustly transferable to charged protein interfaces. A thorough comparison of ATP's cryoprotective activity with traditionally known biological cryoprotectants (glycine and betaine) reveals ATP's greater efficiency. In retrospect, our findings highlight ATP's additional biological role in cryopreservation, expanding its potential biomedical applications by offering effective protection of cells from cryoinjuries and avoiding the significant challenges associated with the toxicity of organic cryoprotectants.

Green Synthesis of Dracocephalum kotschyi-Coated Silver Nanoparticles: Antimicrobial, Antioxidant, and Anticancer Potentials.

BACKGROUND The environmentally friendly production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has gained significant attention as a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical methods. This study focused on synthesizing AgNPs using extract of Dracocephalum kotschyi (D. kotschyi), a medicinal plant. MATERIAL AND METHODS The biosynthesis of AgNPs was monitored using UV-visible spectrophotometry. The role of phytoconstituents from D. kotschyi in stabilizing AgNPs was analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) spectroscopy was used to determine the size, charge, and polydispersity of the nanoparticles, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to assess their morphology. We evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of the synthesized AgNPs against various bacteria, their antioxidant properties via a 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and their cytotoxic activity against the HeLa cervical cancer cell line. RESULTS The formation of AgNPs was indicated by a color change and the emergence of a surface plasmon resonance peak at 418 nm. The nanoparticles demonstrated significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytotoxic, and anticancer activities. Morphology, size, and shape analysis revealed nearly spherical particles with an average size of 43 nm. FTIR confirmed the presence of phenolic compounds in the extract, serving as reducing and capping agents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the crystalline structure of the nanoparticles. Antimicrobial assessments showed effectiveness against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The DPPH scavenging assay demonstrated efficient antioxidant activity, and potent apoptotic anticancer effects were observed on cervical cancer cells. CONCLUSIONS The extract of D. kotschyi was effective as a reducing agent in the environmentally friendly synthesis of AgNPs, which exhibited noteworthy antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. These findings suggest potential biomedical applications for the synthesized AgNPs.

Eco-friendly synthesis of bioactive silver nanoparticles from black roasted gram (Cicer arietinum) for biomedical applications

Green synthesis leverages biological resources such as plant extracts to produce cost-effectively and environmentally friendly NPs. In our study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are biosynthesized using blank roasted grams (Cicer arietinum) as reducing agents. CA-AgNPs were characterized by a characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 224 nm in the UV–Vis spectrum. FTIR analysis revealed functional groups with O–H stretching at 3410 cm−1, C–H stretching at 2922 cm−1, and C=O stretching at 1635 cm−1. XRD patterns exhibited sharp peaks at 33.2°, 38.4°, 55.7°, and 66.6°, confirming high crystallinity. Morphological analysis through FESEM indicated spherical CA-AgNPs averaging 500 nm in size, with EDS revealing Ag at 97.51% by weight. Antimicrobial assays showed zones of inhibition of 14 mm against Candida albicans, 18 mm against Escherichia coli., and 12 mm against Propionibacterium acnes. The total phenolic content of CA-AgNPs was 26.17 ± 13.54 mg GAE/g, significantly higher than the 11.85 ± 9.57 mg GAE/g in CA extract. The ABTS assay confirmed the antioxidant potential with a lower IC50 value of 1.73 ± 0.41 µg/mL, indicating enhanced radical scavenging activity. Anti-melanogenesis was validated through tyrosinase, showing inhibition rates of 97.97% at the highest concentrations. The anti-inflammatory was evaluated by western blot, which showed decreased expression of iNOS and COX-2. This study demonstrates the green synthesis of CA-AgNPs and its potential biomedical applications. The results of this study demonstrate that biosynthesized CA-AgNPs have key biological applications.

Fe0-MAP Prepared Glycosurfaces for Selective Cell Capture: From Adherent to Suspended Cells.

The specific capture of live cells is crucial for various biomedical applications. Existing methods often are limited by complex production processes. This study introduces Fe0-mediated monomer-adaptation polymerization (Fe0-MAP), a convenient and rapid synthesis approach for selective cell capture using surface-engineered glycopolymer brushes. This method utilizes surface-initiated zerovalent iron-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (Fe0-SI-RDRP), offering advantages like simplicity, biocompatibility and oxygen-tolerance due to the use of iron sheet as catalysts. We successfully employed Fe0-MAP to selective capture both adherent (HeLa, L929) and suspended cells (Ramos, U937) in mammalian cell cultures. Combining excellent biocompatibility, specific and reusable cell capture capabilities, and applicability to suspended cells, Fe0-MAP establishes itself as a promising strategy for selective cell capture, holding significant potential for diverse biomedical applications.

High-performance magnetic artificial silk fibers produced by a scalable and eco-friendly production method

Flexible magnetic materials have great potential for biomedical and soft robotics applications, but they need to be mechanically robust. An extraordinary material from a mechanical point of view is spider silk. Recently, methods for producing artificial spider silk fibers in a scalable and all-aqueous-based process have been developed. If endowed with magnetic properties, such biomimetic artificial spider silk fibers would be excellent candidates for making magnetic actuators. In this study, we introduce magnetic artificial spider silk fibers, comprising magnetite nanoparticles coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid. The composite fibers can be produced in large quantities, employing an environmentally friendly wet-spinning process. The nanoparticles were found to be uniformly dispersed in the protein matrix even at high concentrations (up to 20% w/w magnetite), and the fibers were superparamagnetic at room temperature. This enabled external magnetic field control of fiber movement, rendering the material suitable for actuation applications. Notably, the fibers exhibited superior mechanical properties and actuation stresses compared to conventional fiber-based magnetic actuators. Moreover, the fibers developed herein could be used to create macroscopic systems with self-recovery shapes, underscoring their potential in soft robotics applications.

Creation of 3D chitin/chitosan composite scaffold from naturally pre-structured verongiid sponge skeleton

This study represents the first creation and characterization of a 3D chitin/chitosan composite scaffold derived from the naturally pre-structured skeleton of the cultivated marine demosponge Aplysina aerophoba, aiming to preserve the intricate architecture of the unique tube-like chitin while incorporating chitosan layers. Advanced staining methods, including the use of iodine and Cibacron Brilliant Red (CBR), were employed to distinguish these polysaccharides. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the system's structural integrity and identified the optimal chitin/chitosan balance, achieved after 60-minute treatment in 38% NaOH at 95°C. Fluorescent microscopy using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) effectively confirmed the presence of chitosan layers in the created chitin/chitosan scaffolds. Scanning electron microscopy analysis further elucidated significant morphological distinctions, where chitin fibers displayed a smooth, uniform surface, contrasting with the ragged and irregular texture of chitosan-containing fibers, indicating significant surface modifications. Zeta potential measurements confirmed the partial transformation of chitin into chitosan. The dual-layer configuration, consisting of a resilient chitin core and a versatile chitosan exterior, not only provides structural support, but also enhances the scaffold's functionality for potential technological and biomedical applications. The preferential metallization of the chitosan phase by copper nanoparticles in the created 3D chitin/chitosan composite opens the way to the potential use of such scaffolds in catalysis.

Thermo- and Photoresponsive Smart Nanomaterial Based on Poly(diethyl vinyl phosphonate)-Capped Gold Nanoparticles

A new nanodevice based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) capped with poly(diethylvinylphosphonate) (PDEVP) has been synthesized, showing interesting photophysical and thermoresponsive properties. The synthesis involves a properly designed Yttriocene catalyst coordinating the vinyl-lutidine (VL) initiator active in diethyl vinyl phosphonate polymerization. The unsaturated PDEVP chain ending was thioacetylated, deacetylated, and reacted with tetrachloroauric acid and sodium borohydride to form PDEVP-VL-capped AuNPs. The NMR, UV–Vis, and ESI-MS characterization of the metal nanoparticles confirmed the formation of the synthetic intermediates and the expected colloidal systems. AuNPs of subnanometric size were determined by WAXD and UV–Vis analysis. UV–Vis and fluorescence analysis confirmed the effective anchoring of the thiolated PDEVP to AuNPs. The formation of 50–200 nm globular structures was assessed by SEM and AFM microscopy in solid state and confirmed by DLS in aqueous dispersion. Hydrodynamic radius studies showed colloidal contraction with temperature, demonstrating thermoresponsive behavior. These properties suggest potential biomedical applications for the photoablation of malignant cells or controlled drug delivery induced by light or heat for the novel PDEVP-capped AuNP systems.

Preparation, Mechanical Properties, and Degradation Behavior of Zn-1Fe-xSr Alloys for Biomedical Applications

As biodegradable materials, zinc (Zn) and zinc-based alloys have attracted wide attention owing to their great potential in biomedical applications. However, the poor strength of pure Zn and binary Zn alloys limits their wide application. In this work, a stir casting method was used to prepare the Zn-1Fe-xSr (x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 wt.%) ternary alloys, and the phase composition, microstructure, tensile properties, hardness, and degradation behavior were studied. The results indicated that the SrZn13 phase was generated in the Zn matrix when the Sr element was added, and the grain size of Zn-1Fe-xSr alloy decreased with the increase in Sr content. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Brinell hardness increased with the increase in Sr content. The UTS and hardness of Zn-1Fe-2Sr alloy were 141.65 MPa and 87.69 HBW, which were 55.7% and 58.4% higher than those of Zn-1Fe alloy, respectively. As the Sr content increased, the corrosion current density of Zn-1Fe-xSr alloy increased, and the charge transfer resistance decreased significantly. Zn-1Fe-2Sr alloy had a degradation rate of 0.157 mg·cm−2·d−1, which was 118.1% higher than the degradation rate of Zn-1Fe alloy. Moreover, the degradation rate of Zn-1Fe-xSr alloy decreased significantly with the increase in immersion time.

Green synthesis and antibacterial potency of Ag/CuO/ZnO nanoparticles derived from Psidium guajava L. extracts

Nanoparticles, characterized by their unique physicochemical properties, represent a significant frontier in interdisciplinary research, particularly within the realms of biomedicine and environmental science. This investigation delves into the eco-friendly synthesis of silver (Ag), copper oxide (CuO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles utilizing extracts derived from Psidium guajava L. The utilization of these botanical extracts presents a sustainable alternative to traditional nanoparticle fabrication methodologies, aligning with global sustainability imperatives and fostering environmentally conscious practices. The escalating global nanoparticle market, valued at over $30 billion in 2020 and projected to surpass $90 billion by 2027, underscores the economic significance and industrial relevance of nanoparticle research. This research trajectory fuels innovation across a spectrum of sectors, including healthcare, cosmetics and environmental remediation. The commercialization of nanoparticle-based products not only drives substantial revenue streams but also catalyzes advancements in research, development and manufacturing endeavors. Drawing upon aqueous extracts sourced from P. guajava., leaves and fruits, this study capitalizes on their inherent phytochemical composition to serve as stabilizing, reducing and capping agents during nanoparticle synthesis. Employing state-of-the-art characterization techniques such as UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, FE-SEM and EDS facilitates a comprehensive analysis of the synthesized nanoparticles' physicochemical attributes. Assessment of the nanoparticles' antibacterial efficacy against gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris) bacterial strains reveals compelling results. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) elucidate notable efficacy, notably against P. vulgaris (3.75 mg/mL), S. aureus (7.5 mg/mL) and B. subtilis (10 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL), indicative of their potential biomedical applications in combating microbial infections.

Self-Polymerized Tough and High-Entanglement Zwitterionic Functional Hydrogels.

Zwitterionic hydrogels exhibit great potential in biomedical applications due to their antifouling properties and biocompatibility. However, the single-network structure of pure zwitterionic hydrogels leads to a low toughness and strength, limiting their application in biomedical fields. In this work, a high entanglement sulfobetaine methacrylate-dopamine hydrogel (SBMA-DA-PE) with low cross-linker content and high monomer concentration is prepared by using a dopamine oxidative radical polymerization method. Compared to a regular zwitterionic hydrogel, the SBMA-DA-PE hydrogel exhibits a 5-fold increase in tensile fracture stress and a 10-fold increase in compressive fracture stress. The SBMA-DA-PE hydrogel possesses excellent mechanical properties (the maximum compressive stress ≥4.85MPa, the maximum compressive strain ≥90%). Besides, the non-covalent interactions between catechol or ortho-quinones within the SBMA-DA-PE hydrogel, combined with strong intermolecular electrostatic interactions, endow the SBMA-DA-PE hydrogel with great self-healing capabilities and fatigue resistance. The SBMA-DA-PE hydrogel demonstrates low swellability and possesses good antifouling properties. Furthermore, the good printability and conductivity of the tough SBMA-DA-PE hydrogel endows it with new possibilities for developing biological 3D scaffolds and electronic devices. Overall, this work provides new insights into the preparation of zwitterionic hydrogels with high mechanical strength and multi-functionality for biomedical applications.

A Near-Infrared Fluorescent Probe With Assembly/Aggregation-Induced Retention Effect for Specific Diagnosis of Metastasis and Image-Guided Surgery in Breast Cancer

Image-guided surgery is crucial for achieving complete tumor resection, reducing postoperative recurrence, and improving patient survival. However, current clinical near-infrared fluorescent probes, such as indocyanine green (ICG), face two main limitations: 1) lack of active tumor targeting, and 2) short retention time in tumors, which restricts real-time imaging during surgery. To address these issues, we developed a near-infrared fluorescent probe capable of in situ nanofiber formation within tumor lesions. This probe actively targets the integrin αvβ3 receptors overexpressed on breast cancer cells and exhibits assembly/aggregation-induced retention effects at the tumor site, significantly extending the imaging time window. Additionally, we found that the probe’s fluorescence intensity can be enhanced under receptor induction. Due to its excellent tumor specificity and sensitivity, 1FCG-FFGRGD not only identifies primary breast cancer but also precisely locates smaller lymph node metastases and detects sub-millimeter peritoneal metastases. In summary, this near-infrared probe, leveraging assembly/aggregation-induced retention effects, holds substantial potential for various biomedical applications.

Graphene-Oxide Peptide-Containing Materials for Biomedical Applications.

This review explores the application of graphene-based materials (GBMs) in biomedicine, focusing on graphene oxide (GO) and its interactions with peptides and proteins. GO, a versatile nanomaterial with oxygen-containing functional groups, holds significant potential for biomedical applications but faces challenges related to toxicity and environmental impact. Peptides and proteins can be functionalized on GO surfaces through various methods, including non-covalent interactions such as π-π stacking, electrostatic forces, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces, as well as covalent bonding through reactions involving amide bond formation, esterification, thiol chemistry, and click chemistry. These approaches enhance GO's functionality in several key areas: biosensing for sensitive biomarker detection, theranostic imaging that integrates diagnostics and therapy for real-time treatment monitoring, and targeted cancer therapy where GO can deliver drugs directly to tumor sites while being tracked by imaging techniques like MRI and photoacoustic imaging. Additionally, GO-based scaffolds are advancing tissue engineering and aiding tissues' bone, muscle, and nerve tissue regeneration, while their antimicrobial properties are improving infection-resistant medical devices. Despite its potential, addressing challenges related to stability and scalability is essential to fully harness the benefits of GBMs in healthcare.
