Photocatalytic synthesis of chromeno[4,3-b]chromenes, serving as potential drugs in oral cavity and dentistry mediated by TiO2/Ag2WO4

Abstract This research focused on a newly developed heterojunction nanocomposite, TiO2/Ag2WO4, which combines titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver tungstate(VI) (TiO2/Ag2WO4) to enhance the photocatalytic performance. The TiO2/Ag2WO4 photocatalyst was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, DRS, PL, SEM, EDS, and XPS. TiO2/Ag2WO4 proved to be an effective nanophotocatalyst for synthesizing chromeno[4,3-b]chromene derivatives, which exhibit potential antibacterial and antifungal properties relevant to oral health issues like dental caries and periodontal disease. TiO2 can absorb light to generate electrons and holes when exposed to direct light; however, combining it with Ag2WO4 enhances its photocatalytic activity. The study also examined the effects of various factors such as the amount of photocatalyst, reaction time, temperature, solvent choice, and the reusability of the nanocomposite. The best reaction condition involves 1 mmol of dimedone, benzaldehyde, and 4-hydroxycoumarin in the presence of 15 mg TiO2/Ag2WO4 in 3 ml ethanol under irradiation of a green laser at room temperature for 60 min. Findings of this investigation show that TiO2/Ag2WO4 heterojunction is one of the best among the similar introduced counterparts in photocatalytic synthesis of chromeno[4,3-b]chromene derivatives.

Antifungal Ability of Novel Silane on Titanium Implant Surface

Titanium and its alloys are commonly used in dentistry for implants due to their strength, lightweight nature, durability, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. These implants can osseointegrate after surface treatments such as SLA, plasma-spray, and nanotubes, providing a stable foundation for prostheses. However, Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, can threaten the success of titanium dental implants, causing oral infections in vulnerable individuals. A dual novel silane blend of 3-acryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (ACPS) and bis-1,2-(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTSE) has been shown to improve the shear bond strength in resin cement bonds with titanium and ceramics. This study evaluated the effects of Candida albicans colonization on blended silane-coated SLA-Ti surfaces compared to non-coated SLA-Ti (positive control) and flat titanium (negative control). Candida albicans biofilms were cultured on all surfaces, and it was found that silane-coated SLA-Ti had significantly lower CFU counts than non-coated SLA-Ti. However, no significant differences were observed in the RT-PCR results. In conclusion, a combination of 1.0 vol% ACPS and 0.3 vol% BTSE shows promise as a silane coupling agent with potential antifungal properties for inhibiting Candida albicans proliferation.

In Silico Study of the Structural Disruption of 14α-demethylase Induced by the Binding of Terminalia chebula Constituents

Background: Since ancient times, medicinal plants have been in use in medicine and dai-ly life. Objective: To develop new antifungal compounds with low toxicity and high efficacy followed by high bioavailability, the constituents of Terminalia chebula were studied. Methods: The chemical constituents of the plant were evaluated for antifungal potential via Moler-go Virtual Docker against the enzyme 14α-demethylase. Results: The study depicted that tannins exhibited very good potential against the enzyme and could be used further for lead development. Conclusion: The study revealed that the plant possessed various constituents with potential antifun-gal properties and low toxicity.

Exploring Antifungic Properties of Low Vacuum Dealloyed Recycled Brass Nanoporous Powder

Abstract Fungal infections pose a significant health concern globally, due to the evermore common resistance to classical antifungal therapies. One possible way to overcome this tendency is to use new pathways offered by the nanotechnology. In this respect it has been studied the possibility of utilizing recycled waste in the form of brass machining chips that are transformed into micron-porous copper (particles) by vacuum dealloying. In a subsequent step it was evidenced the potential antifungal properties. To manufacture the samples powder metallurgy was combined with vacuum dealloying, and a complex characterization to study the possible utilization of these powders at a laboratory level. The machined precursor powders were low vacuum dealloyed (P∼10-1 torr) at 500 ˚C, 550 ˚C, 600 ˚C and 650 ˚C, and the dealloying time was set between 1-4 hours. The porous particles were characterized by SEM-EDS analysis. The antifungal property was evaluated by exposing the samples on a medium of Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) previously contaminated with a solution of Aspergillus Niger spores. The growth of fungi was analysed daily up to seven days using optical microscopy.

Metal-based compounds: Synthesis and characterization of new thiazole-based iridium and palladium complexes with potential anticancer and other biological activities

Thiazoles and their derivatives are one of the most active classes of compounds known for their wide spectrum of bioactivity. Metal complexes, based on them, show antitumor potential that is attractive for investigations. Herein, we report 6 new biologically active thiazole-based complexes have been synthesized. The iridium- and palladium-based coordination compounds obtained by the precipitation method were characterized using elemental analysis (EA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), magnetic measurements, thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Spectroscopic data helped to propose the formulas of the complexes and indicated that all ligands acted in a monodentate manner. Water molecules were identified by thermal analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. Mathematical analysis and evaluation of thermodynamic parameters including entropy (ΔS), Gibbs free energy (ΔG), and activation energy (E) were performed using the Coats–Redfern method for all complexes. The biological potential (anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal properties) of compounds was analyzed by biological evaluation studies. Investigated CT-DNA studies revealed that the prepared compounds were intercalatively bound to the DNA. Cytotoxicity analyses showed that complexation with Ir(III) increased the toxicity of L2 towards both tested cell lines (LN-229 and MDA-MB-231), while complexation of L3 with Pd(II) significantly increased cytotoxic activity against LN-229. Due to this, the further biological studies, such as apoptosis/necrosis detection, cell cycle analysis and JC-1 fluorescence measurements were performed on this pair of compounds.

Bithionol eliminates acute myeloid leukaemia stem-like cells by suppressing NF-κB signalling and inducing oxidative stress, leading to apoptosis and ferroptosis

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a lethal bone marrow neoplasm caused by genetic alterations in blood cell progenitors. Leukaemic stem cells (LSCs) are responsible for the development of AML, drug resistance and relapse. Bithionol is an old anthelmintic drug with potential antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-Alzheimer, and antitumour properties. In this work, we focused on the anti-AML LSC properties of bithionol. This compound inhibited the viability of both solid and haematological cancer cells, suppressed AML stem-like cells, and inhibited AML growth in NSG mice at a dosage of 50 mg/kg, with tolerable systemic toxicity. Bithionol significantly reduced the levels of phospho-NF-κB p65 (Ser529) and phospho-NF-κB p65 (Ser536) and nuclear NF-κB p65 translocation in AML cells, indicating that this molecule can suppress NF-κB signalling. DNA fragmentation, nuclear condensation, cell shrinkage, phosphatidylserine externalisation, loss of transmembrane mitochondrial potential, caspase-3 activation and PARP-(Asp 214) cleavage were detected in bithionol-treated AML cells, indicating the induction of apoptosis. Furthermore, this compound increased mitochondrial superoxide levels, and bithionol-induced cell death was partially prevented by cotreatment with the selective ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1, indicating the induction of ferroptosis. In addition, bithionol synergised with venetoclax in AML cells, indicating the translational potential of bithionol to enhance the effects of venetoclax in patients with AML. Taken together, these data indicate that bithionol is a potential new anti-AML drug.

Cymbopogon distans: A source of essential oil with potential antibacterial, antifungal, and mosquito-repelling properties

The essential oils have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their potential as natural antimicrobial agents and a means of controlling mosquitoes. This study explored the chemical composition and antibacterial, antifungal, and mosquito-repellent properties of Cymbopogon distans (Nees ex Steud.) Wats (Poaceae) is a less explored aromatic plant distributed in the Himalayas. The fresh biomasses of C. distans and two commercially grown Cymbopogon species, namely C. flexuous and C. martini were submitted to hydrodistillation to extract their essential oils. Gas chromatography-flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses revealed the presence of citral, geraniol, and geranyl acetate as major constituents of C. distans. The essential oils of C. flexuous and C. martini were dominated by citral and geraniol, respectively. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of C. distans essential oil were evaluated using disc diffusion and micro-dilution methods and compared with the essential oils of C. flexuous and C. martini. C. distans essential oil showed a broader spectrum of potent antibacterial and antifungal activities (minimum inhibitory concentration: 0.41 mg/ml and minimum bactericidal concentration/minimum fungicidal concentration: 0.82 mg/ml) against the test strains. C. distans essential oil, in combination with norfloxacin and penicillin G showed synergistic interactions (fractional inhibitory concentration ≤0.5) against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. C. distans essential oil showed a repellent effect against Aedes aegypti (73.3 %) that was comparable to C. winterianus essential oil (75.6 %). This study suggests that C. distans essential oil may be a promising natural candidate for developing new herbal therapies for combating microbial infections and mosquito-borne diseases.

Towards structurally new cyanine dyes—investigating the photophysical and potential antifungal properties of linear substituted heptamethine dyes

AbstractThe synthesis of a range of new linear substituted heptamethine dyes has been designed and described. The photophysical properties of all the dyes were investigated, with many exhibiting improved fluorescent quantum yields when compared with indocyanine green. Finally, growth inhibition studies were performed in the fission yeast Saccharomyces pombe, which suggests potential antifungals activity in the μM range.

Synergistic and potential antifungal properties of tailored, one pot multicomponent monoterpenes co-delivered with fluconazole encapsulated nanostructure lipid carrier

Frequent and variant infections are caused by the virtue of opportunistic fungi pathogens. Candidiasis, aspergillosis, and mucormycosis are pathogenic microorganisms that give rise to vast fungal diseases that alternate between moderate to fatal in severity. The use of fluconazole as an antifungal drug was limited due to the acquired resistance in some types of Candida and other fungal species. This study aims to consolidate fluconazole’s biological effectiveness against several pathogenic fungi. Six active monoterpenes (MTs) of carvacrol, linalool, geraniol, α-terpinene, citronellal, and nerolidol were selected and encapsulated in nanostructure lipid carrier (NLC) with (NLC-Flu-MTs) and/without (NLC-MTs) fluconazole in one nanoformulation to determine if they will act synergistically or not? The synthesized nanoformulation NLC-Flu-MTs and NLC-MTs exhibited very good particle size of 144.5 nm and 138.6 nm for size and zeta potential values of (− 23.5 mV) and (− 20.3 mV), respectively. Transmission electron microscope investigation confirmed that the synthesized NLCs have regular and spherical shape. The abundance and concentration of the six released monoterpenes were determined, as a novel approach, using GC–MS with very good results and validity. In-vitro antifungal screening was done before and after nano co-delivery against seven pathogenic, and aggressive fungi of Candida tropicalis, Candida krusei, Candida glabrata, Geotrichum Candidum, Candidaalbicans, Aspergillus Niger, and mucor circinelloides. Inhibition Zone diameter (IZD) and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were measured. Nanoformulations NLC-Flu-MTs and NLC-MTs manifested potential and unique biological susceptibility against all the tested microorganisms with reduced (MIC) values, especially against Candida Tropicalis (MIC = 0.97 µg/ml) which represents 16-fold of the value shown by NLC-MTs (MIC = 15.6 µg/ml) and 64-fold of fluconazole free before nanoformulation (MIC = 62.5 µg/ml). The efficiency of nanomaterials, particularly NLC-Flu-MTs, has become evident in the diminishing value of MIC which affirmed the synergism between fluconazole and the other six monoterpenes.

Selection and analysis of the characteristics of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum with antifungal activity

Phytophthora drechsleri is a prevalent spoilage-associated organism found in fruits and vegetables that causes serious economic loss and is a public health concern. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is one of the most promising candidates for use in food as a fungal antagonist and biodetoxification agent. In this study, 347 of L. plantarum strains were preliminarily evaluated for antifungal activity against P. drechsleri Tucker. Only 5.48% of the L.plantarum strains tested exerted strong antagonism against P. drechsleri Tucker. L. plantarum IMAU70087 showed the greatest inhibitory activity and exhibited broad antifungal activity against seven test mold species. Moreover, the cell-free supernatant (CFS) of IMAU70087 exhibited strong thermostability and protease resistance. The potential antifungal metabolites were identified in IMAU70087 CFS by UPLC/QTOF/MS metabolomics analysis. These metabolites were mainly organic acids, some of which exhibited potential antifungal properties. This study provided valuable insights into the potential of IMAU70087 as a fungal inhibitor for enhancing food preservation.

Integrated Data Modeling and Biological Evaluation of PEGylated Konjac Gum-Rosin Pentaerythritol Polymeric Nanocomposites for Enhanced Antimicrobial Performance

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens necessitates the development of novel antimicrobial agents. Herein, PEGylated konjac gum-supported rosin pentaerythritol nanocomposites (KG/PEG/RE PNCs) were synthesized using an environmentally friendly sonochemical method, aiming to explore their potential antibacterial and antifungal properties against a range of pathogens, including Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus brasiliensis, and Staphylococcus aureus. An elaborate investigation into the rheological properties of these PNCs highlighted the dependence of viscosity on synthesis parameters such as RE concentration, sonication time, and KG/RE blend ratio with the Higiro model validated as a suitable mathematical model for defining the intricate relationship between experimental and resulting viscosity of PNCs. The integration of machine learning (ML), particularly polynomial regression, enabled the modeling of the complex dynamics influencing PNC viscosity, thus advancing comprehension of PNCs behavior in relation to the synthesis parameters. The modeling facilitated precise formulation to predict PNC viscosity with high accuracy, as confirmed by a mean squared error (MSE) of 3.81 and an R2 of 0.993. Moreover, the PNCs demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, reaching an inhibition plateau during the first week, confirming its efficacy as a versatile antibacterial and antifungal agent. Combining advanced data modeling techniques with biological assessments, this integrated approach represents a step forward in understanding and optimizing polymeric nanostructures.

Drug repositioning for immunotherapy in breast cancer using single-cell analysis.

Immunomodulatory peptides, while exhibiting potential antimicrobial, antifungal, and/or antiviral properties, can play a role in stimulating or suppressing the immune system, especially in pathological conditions like breast cancer (BC). Thus, deregulation of these peptides may serve as an immunotherapeutic strategy to enhance the immune response. In this meta-analysis, we utilized single-cell RNA sequencing data and known therapeutic peptides to investigate the deregulation of these peptides in malignant versus normal human breast epithelial cells. We corroborated our findings at the chromatin level using ATAC-seq. Additionally, we assessed the protein levels in various BC cell lines. Moreover, our in-house drug repositioning approach was employed to identify potential drugs that could positively impact the relapse-free survival of BC patients. Considering significantly deregulated therapeutic peptides and their role in BC pathology, our approach aims to downregulate B2M and SLPI, while upregulating PIGR, DEFB1, LTF, CLU, S100A7, and SCGB2A1 in BC epithelial cells through our drug repositioning pipeline. Leveraging the LINCS L1000 database, we propose BRD-A06641369 for B2M downregulation and ST-4070043 and BRD-K97926541 for SLPI downregulation without negatively affecting the MHC complex as a significantly correlated pathway with these two genes. Furthermore, we have compiled a comprehensive list of drugs for the upregulation of other selected immunomodulatory peptides. Employing an immunotherapeutic approach by integrating our drug repositioning pipeline with single-cell analysis, we proposed potential drugs and drug targets to fortify the immune system against BC.

Isolation and characterization of secondary metabolites of commonly available averrhoa bilimbi L.

Averrhoa bilimbi L., locally known as bilimbi, is a medicinal plant well-recognized in Bangladesh for its fruit, Carambola. This study aims to identify novel phytochemical compounds responsible for the health benefits of the plant by analyzing its stem bark. The stem barks were collected, dried, and ground to extract the phytochemicals, which were then analyzed using microbiological, chromatographic, and spectroscopy-based methods. The analysis revealed that the extract contained sitosterone and lupeol. Biochemical characterization demonstrated that the extract has potential antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and cytotoxic properties. Pharmacological potential of Fridericia Chica: traditional knowledge and chemical composition

The Fridericia chica is a shrub widely distributed throughout the Brazilian territory. In traditional knowledge, it is used for various pathologies. It is a plant of interest in phytotherapy as it is part of the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Brazilian Unified Health System – RENISUS. Among the scientific studies conducted, the potential antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, healing, gastroprotective, antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, antiviral, antitumor, antiangiogenic, photoprotective, diuretic, and hepatoprotective properties have been demonstrated. Furthermore, the assays report the low toxicity of the extracts. Therefore, Fridericia chica is a plant with pharmacological potential for the development of new medications. This article contributes to the dissemination of the species' pharmacological potential and the imminent observation of traditional knowledge.

In Silico Molecular Docking of Phytochemicals of Murraya koenigii Against Streptococcus mutans.

Background The curry leaf tree, Murraya koenigii, is a tropical to subtropical tree in the family Rutaceae that is native to Asia. The plant parts are shown to have potential antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antidiarrheal, antidiabetic, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. Streptococcus mutans is a facultative anaerobic, Gram-positive cocci, a common inhabitant of the human oral cavity that forms biofilms, contributing to dental caries. Aim The study aimed to analyze the inhibitory potential of phytocompounds in M. koenigii against the oral pathogen S. mutans. Materials and methods The protein and ligand were prepared, and molecular docking was carried out using the Hex protein docking server. The PyMOL program was used to view, analyze, and annotate the docked complex. The interaction of the drug, including the mechanism of action, and predicted adverse effects were predicted using the Way2Drug PASS Online server. The absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity properties of the drug candidates were analyzed using the SwissADME online server. Results The study identified O-methyl murrayamine, koenigine, koenigicine, and murrayone as having inhibitory potential against the glycosyltransferase protein of S. mutans. Among the four compounds analyzed for docking, koenigicine had the lowest E-score, indicating a strong interaction with the receptor. Among the four compounds analyzed, murrayone had a high topological polar surface area score, while all four compounds had similar bioavailability scores. Conclusion This study concluded that O-methyl murrayamine, koenigine, koenigicine, and murrayone exhibit potent inhibitory potential against S. mutans. M. koenigiileaf extract can be used in toothpaste as an antibacterial agent to protect teeth against dental caries. These findings are important for the potential use of the above compound to act as an anticariogenic agent in oral health applications.

Antifungal activity of copper oxide nanoparticles derived from Zizyphus spina leaf extract against Fusarium root rot disease in tomato plants

Incorporating green chemistry concepts into nanotechnology is an important focus area in nanoscience. The demand for green metal oxide nanoparticle production has grown in recent years. The beneficial effects of using nanoparticles in agriculture have already been established. Here, we highlight some potential antifungal properties of Zizyphus spina leaf extract-derived copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-Zs-NPs), produced with a spherical shape and defined a 13–30 nm particle size. Three different dosages of CuO-Zs-NPs were utilized and showed promising antifungal efficacy in vitro and in vivo against the selected fungal strain of F. solani causes tomato root rot disease, which was molecularly identified with accession number (OP824846). In vivo results indicated that, for all CuO-Zs-NPs concentrations, a significant reduction in Fusarium root rot disease occurred between 72.0 to 88.6% compared to 80.5% disease severity in the infected control. Although treatments with either the chemical fungicide (Kocide 2000) showed a better disease reduction and incidence with (18.33% and 6.67%) values, respectively, than CuO-Zs-NPs at conc. 50 mg/l, however CuO-Zs-NPs at 250 mg/l conc. showed the highest disease reduction (9.17 ± 2.89%) and lowest disease incidence (4.17 ± 3.80%). On the other hand, CuO-Zs-NPs at varied values elevated the beneficial effects of tomato seedling vigor at the initial stages and plant growth development compared to either treatment with the commercial fungicide or Trichoderma Biocide. Additionally, CuO-Zs-NPs treatments introduced beneficial results for tomato seedling development, with a significant increase in chlorophyll pigments and enzymatic activity for CuO-Zs-NPs treatments. Additionally, treatment with low concentrations of CuO-Zs-NPs led to a rise in the number of mature pollen grains compared to the immature ones. however the data showed that CuO-Zs-NPs have a unique antifungal mechanism against F. solani, they subsequently imply that CuO-Zs-NPs might be a useful environmentally friendly controlling agent for the Fusarium root rot disease that affects tomato plants.Graphical

TiO2/CuWO4 heterojunction photocatalyst in the preparation of cardiovascular chromeno[4,3-b]chromene drugs.

Chromeno[4,3-b]chromenes have shown potential as effective drugs against cardiovascular diseases. This study centered on a novel heterojunction nanocomposite TiO2/CuWO4, which incorporates titanium dioxide (TiO2) and copper tungstate(vi) to improve photocatalytic efficiency. The characterization of the TiO2/CuWO4 photocatalyst was performed using various techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, TEM, DRS, SEM, EDS, and XPS. TiO2/CuWO4 demonstrated significant effectiveness as a photocatalyst for the synthesis of chromeno[4,3-b]chromene derivatives, which show potential antibacterial and antifungal properties beneficial for oral health concerns such as dental caries and periodontal disease. While TiO2 can absorb light to produce electrons and holes under direct illumination, its photocatalytic efficiency is improved when paired with CuWO4. The research also explored the influence of several factors, including the quantity of photocatalyst, reaction duration, temperature, solvent selection, and the reusability of the nanocomposite. Optimal reaction conditions were found to involve 1 mmol of dimedone, benzaldehyde, and 4-hydroxycoumarin, using 12 mg of TiO2/CuWO4 in 4 mL of ethanol, subjected to irradiation from a green laser at room temperature for 30 minutes. The results indicate that the TiO2/CuWO4 heterojunction ranks among the most effective options for photocatalytic synthesis of chromeno[4,3-b]chromene derivatives.

Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) Mast. essential oil as a promising source of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and dermatoprotective properties: In vitro and in silico evidence

Tetraclinis articulata is a known traditional medicinal plant used to manage various ailments, such as diabetes, rheumatism and infectious diseases. This study aims to determine the chemical constituents of T. articulata essential oil (EO) and to evaluate its in vitro antibacterial, anti-candidal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and dermatoprotective properties. In addition, a computational docking approach was used to predict the potential antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties of the identified compounds. The volatile oil obtained by hydrodistillation was characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antioxidant activity of T. articulata EO was investigated using three complementary assays: DPPH, ABTS and FRAP. Lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and tyrosinase enzymes were used to assess the anti-inflammatory and dermatoprotective effects of this oil. Moreover, disc-diffusion technique, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays were employed for the antimicrobial screening. The GC-MS analysis revealed that bornyl acetate (41.80 %), α-pinene (17.97 %) and camphor (15.97 %) are the major components of the studied EO. Moreover, T. articulata EO has exhibited promising antioxidant effect on FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS experiments. It also significantly inhibited 5-LOX (IC50 = 67.82 ± 0.03 μg/mL) and tyrosinase (IC50 = 211.93 ± 0.02 μg/mL). The results of MIC and MBC assays indicated that T. articulata EO is able to inhibit the growth of all tested bacteria (Gram + and Gram -) and Candida species. The ratio of tolerance level indicated that the tested oil was bactericidal against the Gram + bacteria and Candida species, whereas it has a bacteriostatic behavior against the Gram− bacteria. In light of these findings, T. articulata EO may be suggested as a potential pharmaceutical agent to prevent inflammation and skin problems and may serve as a natural antimicrobial and antioxidant alternative for sustainable application in food products.

Synergistic effects of CuO/TiO2 -chitosan-farnesol nanocomposites: Synthesis, characterization, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities on melanoma cells SK-MEL-3.

The current investigation focuses on synthesizing copper oxide (CuO)-titanium oxide (TiO2 )-chitosan-farnesol nanocomposites with potential antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer properties against Melanoma cells (melanoma cells [SK-MEL-3]). The nanocomposites were synthesized using the standard acetic acid method and subsequently characterized using an X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results from the antibacterial tests against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Stapylococcus aureus demonstrated significant antibacterial efficacy. Additionally, the antifungal studies using Candida albicans through the agar diffusion method displayed a considerable antifungal effect. For evaluating the anticancer activity, various assays such as MTT assay, acridine orange/ethidium bromide dual staining assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation assay, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) analysis were conducted on SK-MEL-3 cells. The nanocomposites exhibited the ability to induce ROS generation, decrease MMP levels, and trigger apoptosis in SK-MEL-3 cells. Collectively, the findings demonstrated a distinct pattern for the synthesized bimetallic nanocomposites. Furthermore, these nanocomposites also displayed significant (p < 0.05) antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer effects when tested on the SK-MEL-3 cell line.

Zoo-mediated CuO Nanoparticles Synthesis Using Sea Urchin Salmacis virgulata (L. Agassiz &amp; Desor, 1846) Test as a Novel Reducing Agent and Evaluated the In silico Antifungal Activity

Nanotechnology provides alternatives to conventional pesticides that result in improved efficacy with a specific target, reduced doses, smart delivery, and protection from natural enemies. The present study aims to investigate the eco-friendly source of zoo-material from sea urchin Salmacis virgulata (L. Agassiz &amp; Desor, 1846) test. This is the first-time study on sea urchin test aqueous extract using zoo-mediated CuO nanoparticle synthesis. The present results of the zoochemicals from the aqueous zoo-extract of the sea urchin S. virgulata test contained 60 zoo-compounds were recorded using GC-MS techniques. S. virgulata test zoochemicals are involved in the reduction of copper ions (Cu2+ into Cu0), which forms sea urchin-mediated copper oxide nanoparticles, and initially UV-visible, FTIR spectra confirmed the formation of Z-CuONPs. The computational study confirms the potential antifungal properties of S. virgulata test zoochemicals and CuO using molecular docking tools.
