Abutilon indicum: Bioactive Compounds and Diverse Therapeutic Applications

: A large variety of secondary metabolites are found in medicinal plants, and the majority are significant in medicine. One of the well-known plant species used to cure a wide range of human illnesses is Abutilon indicum. The plant Abutilon indicum has a wide range of therapeutic uses, and its varied parts have been employed to cure a wide range of ailments. Numerous bioactive substances, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and glycosides are present in the plant. Potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, hepatoprotective, hypoglycaemic, analgesic, sedative, and diuretic activities have been demonstrated in these compounds. Additionally, the plant has been shown to have cytoprotective properties and to guard against DNA damage brought on by oxidative stress. Future research is required to pinpoint the specific bioactive chemicals responsible for the pharmacological effects of Abutilon indicum and the molecular mechanisms underlying the plant's therapeutic uses. Overall, Abutilon indicum has demonstrated great therapeutic potential and deserves further study as a possible source of homeopathic treatments for various illnesses. The present study covers a summary of the phytochemical and ethnomedicinal applications of Abutilon Indicum that would further help in exploring the research in natural medicine.

Changes in chemical components and hepatoprotective effect of red Panax notoginseng processed by aspartic acid impregnation treatment.

Red Panax notoginseng (RPN) is one of the major processed products of P. notoginseng (PN), with more effective biological activities. However, the traditional processing method of RPN has some disadvantages, such as low conversion rate of ginsenosides and long processing time. In this work, we developed a green, safe, and efficient approach for RPN processing by aspartic acid impregnation pretreatment. Our results showed that the optimized temperature, steaming time, and concentration of aspartic acid were 120 °C, 1 h, and 3% respectively. The original ginsenosides in PN treated by aspartic acid (Asp-PN) were completely converted to rare saponins at 120 °C within just 1 h. The concentration of the rare ginsenosides in Asp-PN was two times higher than that in untreated RPN. In addition, we examined the protective effect of RPN and Asp-PN on acetaminophen-induced liver injury in a mouse model. The results showed that Asp-PN has significantly more potent hepatoprotective action than the RPN. The hepatoprotection of Asp-PN in acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity may be due to its anti-oxidative stress, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory activities. These results indicated that aspartic acid impregnation pretreatment may provide an effective method to shorten the steaming time, improve the conversion rate of ginsenosides, and enhance hepatoprotective activity of RPN. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Treatment of Hypothyroidism with Flavonoid Rich Extract of Fucus vesiculosus L Algae in Adult Rats

Background: Thyroid-related diseases, such as hypothyroidism, affect large populations worldwide and have severe health effects. Fucus vesiculosus L seaweed, which is full of iodine and other biologically active ingredients, has always been recognized as a remedy for hypothyroidism. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of a flavonoid extract of the algae, Fucus vesiculosus L, on the thyroid hormones in rat. Method: Thirty-two mature rats were separated into four categories and given different amounts of the seaweed extract over the span of a month. Blood samples were then taken and assessed for thyroid hormones, antioxidants, and liver enzymes. The effect of the flavonoid extract of the Fucus vesica algae on thyroid hormones in the serum of adult rats was studied, by estimation thyroid hormones, glutathione peroxidase, and peroxynitrite, in addition to liver enzymes in the blood serum of (32) adult rats. Results: The results showed that the TSH level a significant decrease in all groups compared to the control group after a month of dosing. T3 also showed a significant increase in all groups compared to the control, in addition to T4, which showed a significant increase in all groups. As for the level of glutathione peroxidase, it showed a significant decrease in all groups compared to the control group, while peroxynitrite showed a significant decrease in all groups compared to the control group. As for liver enzymes, they showed a significant decrease in all groups compared with the control group. Conclsuion: In summary, the Fucus vesiculosus L. seaweed flavonoid extracts showed a marked deviations in the concentrations of thyroid hormones and exposed potential hepato-protective and antioxidative activity in adult rats.

Hypseudohenrin H, a highly-cyclized polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol derivative from Hypericum pseudohenryi

Hypseodohenrin H (1), a cyclization product of nor-BPAPs with a 6/5/5 tricyclic ring system was characterized, along with it ring opening product, 1,7-seco-norhypseodohenrin (2). Their structures were elucidated by NMR, MS, and XRD analysis. Different from other cyclization product of nor-BPAPs that underwent a free radical process, the transformation from 1 to 2 was an ionic process. The bioactivity screening results showed that compounds 1 and 2 exhibited potent hepatoprotective activity with EC50 value of 5.99 μM and 3.65 μM, respectively.

Ultrafiltration fractionation of rice protein hydrolysates: Physicochemical properties and potential biological activities of different rice protein hydrolysate fractions

In this study, rice protein hydrolysate (RPH) was separated by membrane ultrafiltration, and three ultrafiltration fractions (UFs) with distinct molecular weights (RPP-1, RPP-2 and RPP-3) were yielded. The physicochemical properties and in vitro bioactivities of these fractions were characterized. Among RPH and its UFs, RPP-1 exhibited highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 4.42 ± 0.08 mg/mL) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (84.21 mg GSH/g). RPP-3 exhibited the highest ABTS radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 0.97 ± 0.01 mg/mL). All the samples exhibited angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activity (5.38% ± 0.76%–54.14% ± 3.04%) and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (−38.90% ± 3.20%–99.99% ± 0.01%). In addition, the activation of alcohol dehydrogenase by RPH and its UFs was observed in this study, with an activation percentage of 46.20% ± 4.96%–199.77% ± 7.71%. However, no inhibitory activity towards acetylcholinesterase was detected. In present study, the potential antialcohol and hepatoprotective activity of RPH was observed. Overall, this study would provide a new idea for the high-value utilization of RPH and a theoretical foundation for the development of bioactivity peptides derived from rice protein.

Lignan glucosides from Gentiana macrophylla with potential anti-arthritis and hepatoprotective activities

Ten lignans, including six previously undescribed phenolic ester glycosyl lignans (1–6), were isolated from a well-known traditional Chinese medicine, Qin-Jiao, which is the dry root of Gentiana macrophylla Pall. (Gentianaceae). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic and chemical methods, especially 2D NMR techniques. Quantum chemical calculations of theoretical ECD spectra allowed the determination of their absolute configurations. Refer to its traditional applications for the treatment of rheumatic arthralgia and hepatopathy, these compounds were evaluated on a TNF-α induced MH7A human synoviocyte inflammation model and a D-GalN induced AML12 hepatocyte injury model. Compounds 1, 2, 5, and 6 significantly reduced the release of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β in MH7A cells at 15 μM and they also could strongly protect AML12 cells against D-GalN injury at 30 μM. Flow cytometry and Western blot analysis showed that compound 5 ameliorated D-GalN induced AML12 cell apoptosis by upregulating the expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein and down-regulating the expression of pro-apoptotic Bax protein.

Comparative Effects of Ethanolic Leaf Extracts of Gongronema latifolium Benth and Bryophyllum pinnatum (Lam.) Oken in The Management of Diabetes Mellitus in Albino Rats

Introduction: Diabetes is a multi-factorial metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia, which is the primary factor in preventing glucose from achieving its desired levels in patients with the condition. Hyperglycemia results from a lack of insulin secretion, inadequate insulin action or both. Materials and Methods: The comparative effects of ethanolic leaf extracts of The comparative effects of ethanolic leaf extracts of Gongronema latifolium (G. latifolium) and Bryophyllum pinnatum (B. pinnatum) on some biochemical parameters in diabetic induced albino rats were investigated. Two different concentrations of ethanolic leaves extracts of both plants were used to treat alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Results: The study found that alloxan administration significantly increased blood sugar levels in diabetic rats, with the highest reduction in group 7 and the lowest in group 5. The ethanolic extracts of B. pinnatum and G. latifolium leaves showed potential hepatoprotective and renal protective activities, but mild urea level alteration was observed. The study suggests that these extracts may be beneficial for diabetic rats. Conclusion: The study reveals that alloxan monohydrate can induce diabetes in animals, and ethanolic extracts from B. pinnatum leaves and G. latifolium leaves may reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic rats. Glibenclamide showed better hypoglycaemic effects. Alloxan may cause hepatotoxicity and renal toxicity, but the extracts may also cause mild urea level alteration.

Bioinformatics approach and experimental validation reveal the hepatoprotective effect of pachyman against acetaminophen-associated liver injury.

Pachyman, known as Poria cocos polysaccharides, refers to the bioactive compounds isolated from Poria cocos. Pachyman is thought to exert cytoprotective action. However, the detailed mechanisms of pachyman action for hepatoprotection remain unknown. In this study, we aimed to assess the therapeutic actions, molecular mechanisms, and key target proteins of pachyman in the treatment of liver injury through network pharmacology and molecular docking assays. Furthermore, these bioinformatic findings were validated by an acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury in vivo. Primarily using bioinformatic analysis, we screened and characterized 12 genes that act as potential therapeutic targets of pachyman against APAP-induced liver injury, in which all core targets were obtained. By using enrichment analysis, these core target genes of pachyman were characterized to reveal the pharmacological functions and molecular mechanisms of anti-liver injury induced by APAP. A molecular docking simulation was further performed to certain anti-liver injury target proteins of pachyman, including cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme (CYP3A4) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS2). In animal experiments, pachyman exerted potent hepatoprotective activities in prenatal APAP-exposed offspring livers, characterized by activated hepatocellular CYP3A4 and NOS2 expressions. These current findings have thus indicated that pachyman exerts hepatoprotective effects and may be the promising nutraceuticals for the treatment of APAP-induced liver injury.

Phytochemicals from Nyctanthes arbor-tristis and their biomedical implications

The list of most useful Indian traditional medicinal plants includes Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, popularly known as Night jasmine. It is widely distributed in the sub-Himalayan regions and south of the Godavari.Each component of the plant has some significant medicinal value and can therefore be used for profit. The present review article illustrates an updated account of the analysis of different pharmacophores from the plant, N. arbor-tristis, and their potential biomedical applications. The significant pharmacological activities of different parts of the plant such as seeds, leaves, flowers, bark, and fruits, have been studied. Numerous phytochemicals contained in this plant including glycosides, flavonoids, essential oils, oleanic acid, carotene, tannic acid, lupeol, friedelin, benzoic acid, and glucose, have been studied and tested for their potential anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-viral, anti-leishmaniasis, anti-pyretic, anti-fungal, anti-malarial, and anti-histaminic activities of N. arbor-tristis. Further, extensive research is required to unravel their effective medicinal applications against varied serious diseases.

Nutritional quality analysis of different Moringa provenance in Bale, Southeast Ethiopia

Moringa is a tree with medicinal, nutritional, industrial, and socio-economic values. Moringa leaf extracts have potential antihypertensive, antispasmodic, antiulcer, diuretic, hepato-protective and cholesterol-lowering activities. The study was conducted to analyze the nutritional quality of different moringa provenances and to promote the best provenances for the end users. Field experiments were conducted in Goro and Dallo Mena districts of Bale located in Oromia regional state of Ethiopia. Collected samples were air-dried at room temperature and milled for laboratory analysis. According to this study growing environment did not bring significant variation (P>0.05) in average mineral contents like Mg, Zn, P and CP content of the provenances. But significantly higher (P<0.05) Na, K, and Ca were recorded for the samples collected from Dallo Mena district, whereas higher Ash and Fe content was recorded in Goro district. On the other hand, provenance from Dallo Mena and Bako is superior to most of the quality characters analyzed. However, the one from Arbaminch is higher in Na and Zn contents. Provenance from Abay Filiklik is higher in Ash, K and P content. Moringa leaf is rich in Ash, Zn, Cp, and Mg to the sufficient level, while Fe, Ca and P are to the level of high or double to triple to the optimum level when compared to the optimum nutrient content of plant material. Generally, higher mean and individual chemical quality values were recorded from provenances grown in Dallo Mena district except for K, Fe, Zn, and CP, which are higher in Goro. Int. J. Agril. Res. Discovery of hepatoprotective activity components from Thymus quinquecostatus celak. by molecular networking, biological evaluation and molecular dynamics studies

Thymus quinquecostatus Celak. is an edible herb that widely cultivated in Asia and possesses hepatoprotective activity, but the underlying non-volatile components of this protective activity are not well studied. In this study, combining molecular networking visualization and bioassay-guided fractionation strategies, a pair of novel skeleton diterpenoid enantiomers, (+)- and (−)-thymutatusone A [(+)- and (−)-1], along with one new and one known biogenetically related compounds (2–3) and 16 other known compounds (4–19), were identified from T. quinquecostatus. Their structures were exhaustively characterized by comprehensive spectroscopic data, X-ray diffraction analysis, and ECD calculations. Compounds (±)-1, (−)-1, and (+)-1, with a rare tricyclo [7.3.1.02,7] tridecane skeleton, exhibited potent hepatoprotective activity in HepG2 cells injured by acetaminophen, with EC50 values of 11.5 ± 2.8, 8.4 ± 1.9, and 12.2 ± 0.3 μM respectively. They were more potent than positive drug bifendate (EC50 15.2 ± 1.3). Further, the underlying mechanism for the hepatoprotective activity of compound (−)-1 related to activating the Nrf 2 signaling pathway. What’s more, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation analysis showed that compound (−)-1 could dock with the active site of Nrf 2 protein and form a stable system through hydrogen bonding. These results suggest that T. quinquecostatus can be used as a valuable source of hepatoprotective activity compounds.

The distinctive hepatoprotective activity of turmeric kombucha (Curcuma longa) induced by diethylnitrosamine in Balb/C mice

This study aims to investigate the potential hepatoprotective activity of turmeric kombucha before and after fermentation and to compare such distinctive activity in turmeric kombucha versus turmeric essence beverage (turmeric beverage without fermentation). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MC) analyses revealed the presence of bioactive compounds in turmeric kombucha and turmeric essence beverages. In vivo tests appraised the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), malondialdehyde (MDA) in Balb/C mice and the histology of their livers was determined. Upon successful fermentation process new compounds such as: tetrahydrocurcumin, ferulic acid, glucuronidated curcumin, cyclofenil, acetic acid, glucuronic acid, and d-saccharic acid-1,4-lactone were produced in turmeric kombucha, which were not found in non-turmeric kombucha. The positive effect of fermentation has boosted the hepatoprotective activity of turmeric kombucha through the release of compounds and the production of new bioactive compounds. Therefore, fermented turmeric kombucha had a greater effect on the hepatoprotective activity compared to turmeric essence beverage in Balb/C mice.

Chemical constituents from Acorus calamus with potent anti-diabetic and hepatoprotective activities

Three previously undescribed compounds, (+)-7S,8S-syringoylglycerol-7-O-3′,4′-dihydroxylphenylethanol (1), (+)-2S,3R-piscidic acid 1-methyl-5-ethyl ester (2), and 2′S-2-acetyl-3-(2,3-dihydroxypropoxyl)furan (3), together with one new natural product, 7S,8S-4,7,8-trihydroxyl-methyl phenylpropionate (4) and a known lignan (7S,8R)-methyl-4′,7-epoxy-3,3′-dimethoxy-4,9-dihydroxylignan-9′-oate (5), were isolated from the ethanol extract of Acorus calamus Linn. rhizomes. Their structures were determined based on extensive spectroscopic analyses and computational methods. All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their in vitro GK activating and hepatoprotective activities, and compound 5 exhibited significant GK activating activity at 10−5 mol/L, compound 3 exhibited moderate protective effects to APAP-induced injuries of HepG2 cells at 10−5 mol/L. Furthermore, molecular docking of compound 5 bound with GK was carried out to investigate the possible structural insights into the potential binding patterns.

Hepatoprotective potential of gabapentin in cecal ligation and puncture-induced sepsis; targeting oxidative stress, apoptosis, and NF-kB/MAPK signaling pathways.

Sepsis is a severe inflammatory response to infection with an incidence rate exceeding 48 million cases and 11 million sepsis-related deaths yearly. Furthermore, sepsis remains the fifth most common cause of death worldwide. The present study aimed to examine, for the first time, the potential hepatoprotective activity of gabapentin on cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis in rats at the molecular level. CLP was used as a model of sepsis in male Wistar rats. Histological examination and liver functions were evaluated. Levels of MDA, GSH, SOD, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α were investigated using ELISA. mRNA levels of Bax, Bcl-2, and NF-kB were assessed by qRT-PCR. Western blotting investigated the expression of ERK1/2, JNK1/2, and cleaved caspase 3 proteins. CLP resulted in liver damage, elevated serum levels of ALT, AST, ALP, MDA, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, increased expression of ERK1/2, JNK1/2, and cleaved caspase 3 proteins, and upregulated Bax and NF-κB genes expression while it down-regulated Bcl-2 gene expression. However, gabapentin treatment significantly reduced the severity of CLP-induced biochemical, molecular, and histopathological changes. Gabapentin attenuated the levels of the proinflammatory mediators, decreased the expression of JNK1/2, ERK1/2, and cleaved caspase 3 proteins, suppressed Bax and NF-κB genes expression and increased the expression of the Bcl-2 gene. Consequently, Gabapentin reduced hepatic injury resulting from CLP-induced sepsis by reducing proinflammatory mediators, attenuating apoptosis, and inhibiting the intracellular MAPK (ERK1/2, JNK1/2)-NF-kB signaling pathway.

Hepatoprotective activity of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract against Alcohol-induced liver damage in wistar rats

Averrhoa bilimbi is one of the India’s most legendary and sacred trees which belongs to the family Oxalidaceae.The aim of the current study is to examine the hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic leaf extracts of Averrhoa bilimbi against alcohol-induced hepatic damage in albino rats.The degree of protection was determined by evaluating biochemical parameters such as serum Alanine transaminase, Aspartate transaminase,Serum alkaline phosphatase, and total Bilirubin.The study reveals,when compared to the positive control, the leaf extract at dose levels of 100, 200, and 400mg/kg bodyweight p.o. showed a significant (P<0.05) reduction in liver enzyme levels. The histopathological examination of liver sections were supported by these biochemical parameters. The phytochemical analysis of the extract shows the presence of phytosterols and flavonoids, which might be responsible for the hepatoprotective activity.Therefore it could be concluded that Averrhoa bilimbi leaves extract possess potent hepatoprotective activity against alcohol induced hepatic damage in rats.

Ligand-free high loading capacity ursolic acid self-carried nanovesicles enable hepatocyte targeting via absorbing apolipoproteins

Ursolic acid (UA), a natural pentacyclic terpenoid carboxylic acid that can exert a potent hepatoprotective activity, has been developed into various types of nanoparticles to improve its pharmacological effects, however, the phagocytosis of nanoparticles by Kupffer cells greatly limits its efficacy. Herein, UA/Tween 80 nanovesicles (V-UA) were constructed and despite its simple composition, it fulfills multiple functions simultaneously: UA served as not only an active ingredient in the nanovesicle drug delivery system, but also acts as part of the carrier to stabilize UA/Tween 80 nanostructure; with a molar ratio of UA to Tween 80 up to 2:1, the formulation possesses a significant advantage of higher drug loading capacity; relative to liposomal UA (Lipo-UA), a conditional cellular uptake and higher accumulation of V-UA in hepatocytes provide insights into the hepatocytes targeting mechanisms of this nanovesicles. Favorable hepatocyte targeting ability also facilitates the treatment of liver diseases, which was well validated in three liver disease models.

High-Value Compounds and Bioactivity of Rice Bran, Rice Bran Protein: A review.

Rice bran and rice bran protein are important sources of minerals, energy, and vitamins. Other bioactive compounds are abundantly available to exert therapeutical activity. Health-promoting activities of high-value compounds of rice bran were significant, as observed in recent studies. A variety of bioactive components present in rice bran and rice bran extract are responsible to exhibit therapeutical potential like chemopreventive, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and lipid-lowering activity. Several bioactivity representative compounds like γ-oryzanol, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, tricin, protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, coumaric acid, phytic acid, isoferulic acid, gallic acid, γ-amino butyric acid, sinapic acid, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E complexes, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, cyanidin-3-glucoside, peonidin-3-glucoside, quercetin, rutin, kaemferol, β-carotene, lutein, vitamin B and lycopene are known to display significant health benefits. The bioactive components produced therapeutical effects by regulation of different mechanisms like increasing faecal excretion, reducing oxidative stress, reducing the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), regulation of NF-kb activation, reduction of proinflammatory cytokines production, suppression of SREBP-1, reduction in the expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, elevated the expression of pro-apoptotic protein Bax, up-regulating P53 expression and suppressing COX-2. Several research engines like PubMed, google scholar, science direct, etc. were used to collect the data on the mentioned keywords. Recent scientific works were included in this article. In this review paper, we profiled the high-value compounds and focused on their antioxidant, anti-hyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, and anticancer activity with their possible mechanism of action.

Total Flavonoids of Rhizoma Drynariae Mitigates Aflatoxin B1-Induced Liver Toxicity in Chickens via Microbiota-Gut-Liver Axis Interaction Mechanisms.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a common mycotoxin that widely occurs in feed and has severe hepatotoxic effects both in humans and animals. Total flavonoids of Rhizoma Drynaria (TFRD), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, have multiple biological activities and potential hepatoprotective activity. This study investigated the protective effects and potential mechanisms of TFRD against AFB1-induced liver injury. The results revealed that supplementation with TFRD markedly lessened broiler intestinal permeability by increasing the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins, as well as correcting the changes in gut microbiota and liver damage induced by AFB1. Metabolomics analysis revealed that the alterations in plasma metabolites, especially taurolithocholic acid, were significantly improved by TFRD treatment in AFB1-exposed chickens. In addition, these metabolites were closely associated with [Ruminococcus], ACC, and GPX1, indicating that AFB1 may cause liver injury by inducing bile acid metabolism involving the microbiota-gut-liver axis. We further found that TFRD treatment markedly suppressed oxidative stress and hepatic lipid deposition, increased plasma glutathione (GSH) concentrations, and reversed hepatic ferroptosis gene expression. Collectively, these findings indicate that ferroptosis might contribute to the hepatotoxicity of AFB1-exposed chickens through the microbiota-gut-liver axis interaction mechanisms; furthermore, TFRD was confirmed as an herbal extract that could potentially antagonize mycotoxins detrimental effects.

Evaluation of antioxidant potential, DNA damage and hepatoprotective properties of Lagenaria siceraria plant against acetaminophen induced hepatotoxicity

Introduction: Lagenaria siceraria has various pharmacological effects like antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-ulcer, anti-cancer, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective activities and is used to treat various diseases like diabetes, jaundice, piles, ulcers, hypertension, colitis, insanity, and skin diseases.Context and purpose of the study: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the phytochemical content, antioxidant activity, DNA damage and hepatoprotective activities of Lagenaria siceraria (LS)plant’s parts to explore their nutraceutical value.Methods: Phytochemical content was measured by the estimation of total phenolics, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, protein and carbohydrates while antioxidant activities were investigated by assaying the parameters of free radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation, superoxide anion radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and DNA damage protection assay. Hepatoprotective activity of LS leaf was measured by assaying cell viability, superoxide dismutase activity, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide formation.Results: Among the tested plant samples, LS leaves showed high contents of total phenolics, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, and protein contents whereas LS fruits have high carbohydrate contents. Evaluation of antioxidant activities in different parts of the LS plant showed that the LS leaf has high antioxidant properties as compared to other plant parts. The L. siceraria leaf also showed DNA protection activities against Fenton’s reagent as well as UV induced hydroxyl radical’s damage. To test the hepatoprotective activity of LS leaf against acetaminophen, induced hepatocellular toxicity and leaf extract concentrations of 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 μg/104 cells were administered to cultured hepatocytes before acetaminophen exposure. The experimental results showed that LS leaf extract restores superoxide dismutase activity and reduces malondialdehyde and nitric oxide formation as compared to acetaminophen alone treated cultured cells.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that leaves of L. siceraria plants have high antioxidant potential and DNA damage-protective and hepatoprotective activities. Hence, the leaf part of this plant may be used in different food applications to provide nutritional and health benefits, as well as in various liver care herbal formulations.Keywords: Antioxidant, Hepatoprotective activity, Hepatocytes, Lipid peroxidation, Total phenolics
