Sediment distribution and transport pattern in the nearshore region, southeast coast of India

The present paper aimed to assess the sediment distribution pattern, mode of transport, and its interaction with hydrodynamic and topographic conditions at different depths and regions along the east coast of India. About 900 surficial sediment samples were collected and analysed on a monthly basis for the Chennai coastal region at 32 stations from 2013 to 2015. The study region is classified into four types, such as beach, inlet, 5 m, and 10 m depth. Sediment textural and grain size trend analyses were conducted to achieve the objectives. Sediment characteristics for the region were recorded as sandy, equally dominated by unimodal and bimodal at the beach, while unimodal at shallow depths (5 and 15 m). The sediments were medium sand to coarse sand at the beach, mostly fine followed by medium at 5 and 15 m depths. The sediment sorting is dominated by moderately well-sorted sediments; the skewness of beach sediments was negative, while nearshore sediments were found positive; average kurtosis values of sediments were noticed to be mesokurtic. The CM plot depicts that the sediments were mostly derived by tractive current, and the modes of transport are “bottom suspension and rolling” and “graded suspension no rolling” at beach locations and shallow water depths, respectively. The GSTA analysis reveals the annual average sediment transport pattern is northerly. The numerical hydrodynamic study confirms the GSTA and CM plot analysis. The study reveals a stable sedimentary environment south of the Chennai port and instability in the northern part. The study includes large spatiotemporal nearshore sediment data with hydrodynamic conditions, immensely helpful to coastal stakeholders and researchers.

Macrofouling organisms with special reference to polychaetes collected from oil trash boom barriers at Chennai port, Southeast coast of India

This study investigates the macrofouling organisms collected from oil trash boom barriers in the open waters of Chennai port (13°6’37’102 N, 80°17’54’123 E). Oil trash boom barriers are temporary floating barriers used to control oil spill in the harbour. Macrofouling organisms settled on the oil trash boom barrier were collected by scraping method. The area covered by fouling was found to be 80 – 100%. The main objective of this study is to determine the macrofouling species composition, community structure, fouling polychaetes and invasive macrofouling species on the oil trash boom barrier. A total of 46 macrofouling species belonging to ten phyla were observed in this study. Perna viridis (Asian Green mussels) and Amphibalanus amphitrite (Barnacles) were the most abundant taxon. A total of 30 polychaete species under 10 families were identified. This is the first report of polychaetes from the oil trash boom barriers at Chennai port.

A country’s capability to trade internationally depends on its traders’ right of entry to worldwide shipment and logistics networks and the effectiveness of our country’s supply chain ( in cost, time, and consistency) depends on the exact features of its domestic market (logistics performance). Recent global trade is not only extremely competitive but also dynamic, and an essential approachable framework to create exports to compete internationally is essential. Countries cannot live in separation. It has to jointly share its wealth and technological know-how and carry out a trade to sell its excess products. The world economy is mutually dependent economic growth of a nation it depends upon its ties with other countries to maintain trade dealings with each other. In this study, an attempt has been made to identify the troubles faced by the customs house agents in Chennai.

Shoreline changes due to construction of groyne field in north of Chennai Port, India.

Chennai Port (13.099872° N, 80.297407° E), located along the southeast coast of India, has been a hub for maritime trade since the fifteenth century. An artificial harbour was initially constructed in 1881 which underwent numerous expansions in the following years. The breakwaters of the harbour intercepted the heavy sediment-laden littoral drift along the coast, resulting in the formation of the world's second-longest urban beach south of the port, i.e. on its up-drift side. Meanwhile, the coast north of the port, i.e. the down-drift side, experienced intense erosion due to a lack of sediment supply and forces induced on the coast due to waves and currents. The shoreline change study in this paper investigates a shoreline stretch of about 6km (protected by transitional groynes), north of Chennai Port by dividing it into three segments. The rate of shoreline changes over a period of about 12years across three different segments was assessed using statistical parameters by employing remote sensing techniques complemented with geographical information system (GIS) and digital shoreline analysis system (DSAS) tool. It is inferred that the coast has witnessed accretion and sizable growth in beach width has been observed post the construction of groyne field.

The Chennai port closure method: A novel simple technique for laparoscopic port closure

PurposeLarge-size ports used for laparoscopic and robotic procedures will require appropriate closure to reduce the probability of trocar site complications including hematoma and hernia. Closure of these ports is done by various methods like the open method extending skin incisions, S-retractor, Carter Thomason method, and so on. Chennai port closure (CHC) method, a novel technique that had been in practice in our unit for more than 2 years, ensures direct visualization of the suture placement, and hence, the abdominal wall fascia and peritoneum are secured. Materials and MethodWe herein describe an easy technique for fascial closure in port size (≥10 cm) after minimally invasive surgery, including both laparoscopic and robotic procedures, using a cobbler needle in 151 patients in the study period between February 2017 and March 2020 for various urological procedures. This technique was done before the introduction of the trocar sheath and ensures direct visualization of the abdominal fascial closure. ResultsThere were no major intraoperative events, additional operating time, and need for any costly instruments. No bowel injuries or trocar site hernias were documented during a mean follow-up of 28 months. Presently, this technique is used by many surgeons in our hospital without much difficulty. ConclusionThe Chennai port site closure technique is an effective, simple, easy-to-apply, and safe procedure.

Analysis of shoreline change between inlets along the coast of Chennai, India

Chennai is a major metropolitan city along the southeast coast of India and is popular for its world’s second longest sandy beach called as Marina beach the shoreline of which has been gradually advancing towards the Bay of Bengal over a century. The advance of the shoreline is due to the construction of breakwaters for the formation of the harbor of Chennai port, one of the 12 major ports of India. The study area is the stretch of the shoreline between two zones, viz., Zone I: Cooum (13° 4′ N and 80° 17′ 20″ E) and Zone II: Adyar (13° 0′ 49″ N and 80° 16′ 38″ E). The rate of shoreline change over the period 2000 to 2019 is analysed through statistical parameters using geographical information system and DSAS (digital shoreline analysis system) in the form of erosion and accretion. The LRR results elucidate that the Chennai coast has experienced an extremely dynamic feature with an average erosion rate of −1.67 m/year. The accretion due to the littoral drift with an average rate of +1.31 m/year is driven by the net alongshore current towards the north of the Adyar River.

Environmental influence on the picophytoplankton community structure in the central and northern Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal (BoB) is a low productive, oligotrophic ecosystem. The picophytoplankton (Pico; <3μm) play a significant role in the biogeochemistry of such ecosystems. The information on the Pico is exiguous from this Bay. Here, the seasonal and spatial variations in abundance and carbon biomass of the Pico groups were investigated (July’08 to April’09) in the central and northern BoB in relation to the environmental conditions. Surface samples were collected from twenty-two stations across the Chennai–Port Blair–Kolkata sector. The Synechococcus group was dominant during most of the year, both in abundance and biomass, with few exceptions when Prochlorococcus dominated the Pico community. The Synechococcus abundance and carbon biomass were higher in the nutrient-rich coastal regions and correlated negatively with salinity. The picoeukaryotes exhibited a distribution pattern similar to Synechococcus, although relatively lower in numbers and biomass. The Prochlorococcus abundance and biomass were higher in the open ocean regions of the central BoB (CBoB). The relatively lower abundance of Prochlorococcus in the northern BoB implies an influence of the freshwater influx, as depicted from the positive correlation with salinity. During the winter monsoon, a cyclonic storm coincided with a deep mixed layer characterized by high concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll-a in the CBoB. The Pico abundance and biomass were relatively higher during this period, with the Prochlorococcus dominating the former and Synechococcus, the latter. The real-time observations of the surface distribution of Pico abundance and carbon biomass in the BoB revealed seasonal variations that were modulated by the episodic mesoscale features.

IMPACT OF WORKING ENVIRONMENT ON JOB SATISFACTION OF EMPLOYEES

The aim of this paper is to analyse the impact of working environment on job satisfaction of port trusts employees. A well structured interview schedule was used to collect the primary data and proportionate random sampling method was used to select the respondents. The study found that there is a significant difference between the satisfaction of employees of V.O.C. and Chennai port trusts with regard to working environment. Structure elucidation and proposed de novo synthesis of an unusual mono-rhamnolipid by Pseudomonas guguanensis from Chennai Port area

In this paper, we describe the isolation of an unusual type of high molecular weight monorhamnolipid attached to esters of palmitic, stearic, hexa and octadecanoic acids as against the routinely reported di-rhamnolipids linked to hydroxydecanoic acids. The bioemulsifier was column-purified and the chemical nature of the compound was elucidated using FT-IR, GC-MS and 1D [1H and13C] and 2D NMR. This monorhamnolipid is extracted from a bacterium, Pseudomonas guganensis and is not reported to have biological activities, let alone emulsification abilities. The bacterium continually produced rhamnolipids when nourished with n-hexadecane as its lone carbon source. The extracellularly secreted monorhamnolipids are capable of degrading hydrocarbons, with most preference to n-hexadecane [EI24 of 56 ± 1.42% by 2 mL of the spent medium]. Whilst the crude ethyl acetate partitioned extract had an EI24 of 65 ± 1.43%; the purified rhamnolipid product showed 78 ± 1.75% both at 12.5 mg/mL concentration. The used-up n-hexadecane is biotransformed to prepare its own rhamnolipids which in return is utilized to degrade n-alkanes thus creating a circular pathway which is proposed herein. This bacterium can be seen as a new source of bioemulsifier to reduce hydrocarbon in polluted waters.

Numerical Modelling of Ballast Water Dispersion in Different Bioregions along the Coast of India

Aquatic organisms and pathogens may become major threats to the coastal and marine environment when introduced into a region beyond their natural distributions through ballast water (BW). Coastal currents induced by tides and winds, especially ebb currents, may facilitate the spread of these marine organisms along nearshore and inshore areas. Numerical modelling of hydrodynamics is an effective tool to track the dispersion of these organisms in the receiving water body through BW release. Particle transport models can be used to track the advection and dispersion of these organisms. Alternatively, the difference in salinity of the BW and coastal waters can be used as a tracer to estimate the dispersion pattern. Tides and winds present in the region at the time of BW release are responsible for the dispersal of the particles present in BW discharge. Based on advection and dispersion processes, the transport of the marine organisms present in the BW can be studied using numerical models. Numerical modelling studies were carried out using the 2-D hydrodynamic model MIKE21 HD, to understand the pattern of BW dispersion at select bioregions along the east and west coasts of India. Mangalore Port located along the west coast in Bioregion-I (CIO-I) and Chennai Port on the east coast in Bioregion-II (CIO-II) were selected for the modelling study. Results obtained from ballast water dispersion modelling studies will be useful for developing and assisting port-based ballast water management programmes for CIO-I and CIO-II regions. The currents are predominantly tide driven near the ports situated along the west coast and the circulation exhibited reversals associated with the tidal currents. However, along the east coast of India, the particles largely followed coastal currents - advected either southward or northward under the influence of prevailing coastal currents in the offshore region and tidal reversals showed had less impact. This information proved useful for determining suitable locations for BW discharge and monitoring points for field sampling in connection with BW release.

A New Species of &lt;i&gt;Kirkegaardia&lt;/i&gt; (Annelida:Polychaeta, Cirratulidae) from the Southeast Coast of India

A new polychaete species, Kirkegaardia serracroochaeta sp. nov. belonging to family Cirratulidae collected from the Chennai port, southeast coast of India is described here. This species possesses distinctly serrated capillary setae. The unique morphological characters of this species are presence of four serrated chaetae, which are referred as special chaetae 1–4. They possess important species-level characteristics such as serrated capillaries, less-spaced teeth and barbs downwards; in addition chaeta 2 is crooked in the middle. This species is named after the special characteristics it possesses when compared to the already existing species of genus Kirkegaardia .

Sustainability and Environmental Management: Emissions Accounting for Ports

ABSTRACTSeaports are global hubs for the transportation of goods. They play an important role in today's global societies and are critical nodes in transportation networks. Sustainable energy use impacts people, the world's environment, and is relevant to the operation and maintenance of ports.In this article, an inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the port of Chennai is made by accounting for the various port facilities, the housing areas, and the fishing harbour, all managed by the port of Chennai. GHG emissions are quantified by following the guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the World Port Climate Initiative (WPCI). Our estimate of GHG emissions for the financial year 2014-15 indicates that 280,558 tonnes of CO2e/year were generated by the port and port related activities. GHG emission accounting and mitigation strategies to reduce the carbon footprint in conventional port activities – a case of the Port of Chennai

ABSTRACTPorts as an industry account for ∼3% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide. The Port of Chennai, India, uses an enormous amount of electricity and diesel for intermodal transportation of goods and for other essential services. The inventory of GHG emissions in the Port of Chennai is made by accounting the various facilities of the port along with the housing colony and fishing harbor which come under the management of the Port of Chennai. Quantification of GHG emissions is made following the guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and World Port Climate Initiative (WPCI). The estimation of GHG emissions showed that 280,558 tonnes of CO2e/year was generated from the port and port-related facilities. Several GHG mitigation strategies and their impact are quantified and discussed. The technology suggestions presented in the paper will be very useful to plan effective mitigation strategies incorporating technological advancement and management policies.

Role of biodiesel with nanoadditives in port owned trucks and other vehicles for emission reduction

Biodiesel is presently available all over the world and can be produced from several types of biomass. Biodiesel fuels are gaining more and more importance as an attractive alternate fuel in various transport sectors due to their renewable nature and lower pollution impact. However, the ports and the shipping sector are still in the early stage of orientation towards biofuels. In the present work, an experimental investigation on the use of diesterol blend (a mixture of diesel, ethanol with biodiesel) with cerium oxide as a nanoadditive (D80JBD15E4S1 + cerium oxide) in a compression ignition engine is performed to assess the emission characteristics. The results reveal that the presence of the cerium oxide nanoparticle changes the reaction patterns and heat transfer rate that reduces both the CO and CO2 percentage concentration in the exhaust gas appreciably. Further, the reduction in CO2 emission in the port of Chennai is quantified considering the replacement of neat diesel with those of modified diesel blend in port owned trucks and vehicles.

Clearing and forwarding agents are facing lots of problems which have direct impact in their business performance. Though, the problems are more in every field, but in C&amp;F agents, they totally depend on customers, customs and shipping companies. The problems faced by them are grouped into four categories namely, finance problems, logistics problems, problems related to government policies, and customs problems. This industry runs mainly of logistics related activities and hence, they face several problems related to logistics. Of course, finance problems are major issues in any company, and this industry is not an exemption. Clearing and forwarding agents are facing lots of problems in their day to day activities. Competition persists everywhere in the logistics and shipping industry. Survival is difficult in this business. However, elimination of issues and eradication of problems will lead to better performance on the part of clearing and forwarding agents. This study was conducted to analyze the problems faced by clearing and forwarding agents in Chennai port. Many interesting outcomes were derived from this study.

Theoretical Prediction of Annual Energy Generation from a Tidal Barrage with Reference to Tidal Range at Chennai

Objectives: Tidal Energy, one of the clean and green energy sources, has the potential to replace the conventional fuels like Coal and Petroleum. In this paper, an attempt has been made to measure the tidal range in Chennai and theoretical calculations have been performed to find how much energy can be harnessed from tidal source. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Chennai city, one of the metropolitan cities of India has been selected as the study area. The Chennai port which is the second largest port in India is the specific site for the tidal measurement using the Tidal gauge. Tidal gauge, usually measures the change in the sea level with respect to a datum for a month period. From the measured tidal range, the power output that can be harnessed from a tidal barrage arrangement has been theoretically calculated. Findings: At Chennai port, there has been a maximum spring tide of about 1.2 m. By approximating the tidal range to 1 m and by considering a tidal barrage having a km2 area, with electrical conversion efficiency of 0.2, the total annual electricity generation capacity is approximately 10 GWh per year is theoretically calculated. Application/Improvement: By increasing the electrical conversion efficiency to 0.4 to 0.5, the production can be more than 20 GWh power.
