Assessing health-related quality of life of Chinese population using CQ-11D

PurposeThis study aimed to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of the Chinese population by using the Chinese medicine quality of life-11 dimensions (CQ-11D) questionnaire and to identify factors associated with HRQoL.MethodsThe data was derived from a survey conducted by the Institute of Pharmacoeconomics Evaluation at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine on the quality of life of the Chinese population. The sex and age of respondents were considered through quota sampling. Demographic, socioeconomic, and health indicators were collected using the structured questionnaire. We performed bivariate analyses first to examine the associations between the above factors and the HRQoL of respondents measured by the CQ-11D. Multivariate linear regression and ordinal logistic regression models were established to analyze the factors (demographic, socioeconomic, and health indicators) differences in HRQoL, as well as the risk of each group reporting problems across the 11 dimensions of CQ-11D.ResultsFrom February 2021 to November 2022, a total of 7,604 respondents were involved and 7,498 respondents were included. The sample approximated the general adult Chinese population in terms of age, sex, and district of residence, and each geographic distribution ranged from 9.71 to 25.54%. Of the respondents, 45.84% were male, and 89.82% were Han ethnicity. The mean utility score ranged from 0.796 to 0.921 as age increased. According to the respondents, most health problems were identified in the PL (fatigue) (70.16%) and SM (quality of sleep) (63.63%) dimensions. The CQ-11D index scores varied with the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of respondents, except for ethnicity (p > 0.05) and income (p > 0.05). The multivariate analysis revealed significant negative associations between health utility scores and various factors. These factors include sex (female), age over 65, belonging to ethnic minorities, rural household registration, being widowed or divorced, having a primary school education or below, being a student or unemployed, having a low income of 0–1,300, engaging in smoking or drinking, limited participation in physical activities, experiencing changes in self-perceived health status compared to the previous year, and having chronic diseases. The odds of respondents reporting problems in 11 dimensions varied among different socio-demographic groups.ConclusionsThis study reports the first Chinese population norms for the CQ-11D derived using a representative sample of the Chinese general population. Self-reported health status measured by the CQ-11D varies among different socio-economic groups. In addition to participation a physical activity and the presence of chronic disease, smoking and drinking also significantly influence HRQoL.

User Attitudes to Content Moderation in Web Search

Internet users highly rely on and trust web search engines, such as Google, to find relevant information online. However, scholars have documented numerous biases and inaccuracies in search outputs. To improve the quality of search results, search engines employ various content moderation practices such as interface elements informing users about potentially dangerous websites and algorithmic mechanisms for downgrading or removing low-quality search results. While the reliance of the public on web search engines and their use of moderation practices is well-established, user attitudes towards these practices have not yet been explored in detail. To address this gap, we first conducted an overview of content moderation practices used by search engines, and then surveyed a representative sample of the US adult population (N=398) to examine the levels of support for different moderation practices applied to potentially misleading and/or potentially offensive content in web search. We also analyzed the relationship between user characteristics and their support for specific moderation practices. We find that the most supported practice is informing users about potentially misleading or offensive content, and the least supported one is the complete removal of search results. More conservative users and users with lower levels of trust in web search results are more likely to be against content moderation in web search.

Factors associated with high and low mental well-being in Spanish university students

BackgroundPrevious studies conducted in various nationally representative samples of the general population show that positive mental health is related to social prosperity. However, specific studies in university populations are scarce. In this study, we set out to explore factors associated with mental well-being (MWB) in a representative sample of first-year university students in Spain. MethodsMWB was assessed with the short version of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale. Multinomial logistic regressions were performed to explore the association between different blocks of factors, including relational, adversity, stress, lifestyle, spiritual, health, and self-perceived health variables with high and low MWB, controlling for sociodemographic and university-related variables. ResultsData from 2082 students (18.6 ± 1.2 years; 56.6 % females) were analysed. Being male, being born in a foreign country, “high” self-perceived support, and “high” self-perceived mental health increased the odds of high MWB. Growing up in the suburbs, stressful experiences, and anxiety disorders reduced the odds of high MWB. Mood and anxiety disorders increased the odds of low MWB. “Middle” self-perceived support, sleeping ≥8 h per day, and “high” self-perceived mental health reduced the odds of low MWB. LimitationsThe cross-sectional design precludes establishing causal relationships. Data were collected in the 2014–15 academic year using self-reported online surveys. ConclusionThe factors associated with high and low MWB do not always mirror each other, so specific plans are needed to successfully address each of the two poles. Interventions and policies targeting these factors for health promotion and disease prevention would improve the MWB of university students.

Awareness About the Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and Its Relation to Headphones Use at al Jouf Region, Northern Saudi Arabia

Background: Noise is an "unwanted sound" with various adverse health effects. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) results from irreparable damage to the inner ear's cochlear hair cells. In addition, a potential consequence of using prevalent personal listening devices (PLDs) puts the users at greater risk of hearing loss when misusing these devices. Objectives: This study evaluates the awareness of NIHL and headphones use among general population in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a representative random sample of the general population of Jouf, Northern Saudi Arabia. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed through the social media. We collected data regarding participants' awareness of NIHL caused by headphone use. Results: As regard knowledge about NIHL among the studied population, there were 46.1% admitted to not knowing whether NIHL is a type of conductive hearing loss, 42.5% recognized that a substantial amount of hearing loss is required to impact speech and social development. The data also highlighted a positive trend, with 54.1% acknowledging that noise-induced hearing problems were preventable. Interestingly, a notable portion, 28.1%, were uncertain about the minimum duration of exposure to loud noise that could harm hearing. Similarly, a significant percentage, 24.0%, were unsure about the minimum volume levels that could negatively affect hearing. Additionally, 21.5% unsure whether frequent exposure to hazardous noise leads to hearing loss due to a damaged eardrum. As regard PLD-related practices, there was a significant portion primarily use earphones (40.4%) and listen to audio for 1-2 hours a day (42.5%). Most individuals (40.4%) reported that people surrounding them are usually affected by the noise from their PLDs. Interestingly, a high percentage (71.9%) expressed the recommendation for installing voice limiting features on their ear devices. Additionally, (80.8%) are willing to change their behavior if presented with evidence of the negative impact of loud noise on hearing. Conclusion: noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a prevalent and preventable public health issue that affects a significant portion of the population, including individuals in Saudi Arabia. The study highlighted a lack of awareness and knowledge about NIHL and its symptoms among the general population. However, there is a positive trend towards acknowledging the preventability of noise-induced hearing problems. The study also revealed concerning practices related to personal listening devices (PLDs), with a significant portion of respondents using earphones for extended periods and being surrounded by noise from their devices. There is a growing willingness among individuals to change their behavior if presented with evidence of the negative impact of loud noise on hearing.

Occupational inequalities and gender differences: work accidents, Brazil, 2019.

To analyze the distribution and association of sociodemographic and occupational factors with self-reported work accidents (WA) in a representative sample of the Brazilian population, with emphasis on occupational class, and to examine gender differences in this distribution. A population-based cross-sectional study, using data from the 2019 National Health Survey (PNS), analyzed the responses of a sample of adults aged 18 or over. Factors associated with WA were investigated using binary logistic regression and hierarchical analysis using blocks (sociodemographic and occupational variables). The final model was adjusted by variables from all blocks, adopting a significance level of 5%. The values of odds ratios (OR) and respective confidence intervals were obtained. Among the participants, 2.69% reported having suffered a WA, with a higher prevalence in men (3.37%; 95%CI 2.97-3.82%) than in women (1.86%; 95%CI 1.55-2.23%). The analysis identified that age group, night work, working hours, and exposure to occupational risks were associated with WA, with emphasis on gender differences. The class of manual workers, both qualified (ORwomen = 2.87; 95%CI 1.33-6.21 and ORmen = 2.46; 95%CI 1.37-4.40) and unskilled (ORwomen = 2.55; 95%CI 1.44-4.50 and ORmen = 3.70; 95%CI 1.95-7.03), had a higher chance of WA than the class of managers/professionals. Occupational factors contributed significantly to the increase in the probability of WA for men and women, with greater magnitude among those positioned in the lower strata of the occupational structure. The results obtained are clues for working out WA prevention actions.

The frequency of selective functional foods consumption is related to improved anthropometric obesity indices: A cross-sectional study in Greek and Cyprian adults

Background: Obesity remains a public health problem. Recent, novel strategies suggest thefrequent inclusion of functional foods for better management of adiposity markers and obesityprevention. Numerous epidemiological and clinical studies demonstrate specific naturalfunctional foods of the Mediterranean Diet and innovative processed foods, enhanced withbioactive compounds, that they may present a possible beneficial role on this approach. Methods: In this cross-sectional epidemiological study, 319 Greeks and Cyprians, aged 18-75years were voluntary recruited in personal interviews. A validated Functional Food Frequency ofConsumption (FFFQ) was filled out, recording the frequency of selective functional foodsconsumption, following by anthropometric and body composition evaluations. Data collectionand statistical analysis were conducted, to assess the possible association of functional foodsfrequency of consumption with adiposity markers. Results: Olive oil is a main part of the daily diet of the representative sample of Greek andCyprian population and its frequency of intake was inversely related to body weight, taking intoaccount the lifestyle pattern and social parameters. Considering general habits andsociodemographic characteristics, Body Mass Index (BMI) was directly associated with thefrequency of consumption of split peas, turmeric, cinnamon, honey, whole wheat- and gluten-free pasta, as well as of gluten-free and enhanced bakeries. These functional food groups areconsumed by majority in a monthly basis, except of honey which is weekly consumed by themajority of the study population. Conclusion: The results suggest that the daily intake of olive oil, as the main characteristic ofMediterranean Diet, may be effective on body weight management. The frequency rise ofspecific spices, honey, functional pasta and bakeries consumption, may lead to increases inmarkers of adiposity. Further research is needed to safely conclude to these claims and theimplementation of nutritional treatment programs with functional foods may prove effective inthe prevention and management of obesity. Epidemiology of myasthenia gravis in France: Incidence, prevalence, and comorbidities based on national healthcare insurance claims data

BackgroundThe European literature has reported high variability in the incidence and prevalence rates of myasthenia gravis (MG), but no specific epidemiological data for France have been published. This study aimed to assess the incidence and prevalence rates of myasthenia gravis in France based on data extracted from the French National Health Insurance Claims Database (the SNIIRAM database). MethodsWe conducted a retrospective repeated cross-sectional population study from 2008 to 2018 using a representative sample of the French population (Échantillon généraliste des bénéficiaires) covered by health insurance. We calculated the incidence, prevalence, and sex ratio of MG and screened for comorbidities associated with MG (standardized to the general population). ResultsIn total, 331 MG patients were identified between 2008 and 2018. The average incidence of MG in France was 50 per million person-years, while the mean prevalence was 465 per million people. The female-to-male ratio was 1.33. The Incidence of MG gradually increased from 40years of age for women and 60 for men. Thymoma was present for 5.1% of MG patients and a thymectomy was performed for 4.7%. Thyroid disease was the most prevalent autoimmune comorbidity, affecting approximately 8.5% of cases. MG patients had an increased cancer risk, with a standardized rate ratio of 2.38 (95% CI: 1.64–3.46). ConclusionThe incidence and prevalence rates of MG are significantly higher than those previously reported in the literature and the incidence increases with age. The excess risk of cancer raises concerns for MG patients, in particular, concerning the management of immunosuppressive drugs.

Dietary Polyphenols: What is the Estimated Intake in Population Studies With Adults and Elderly People?

Estimates of dietary intake of polyphenols have been limited to specific samples from certain population groups, and different databases have been used to quantify the levels of these compounds, which makes it difficult to compare results. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review collated estimates of polyphenol intake from population studies including adults and elderly from different parts of the world by using a single database: Phenol-Explorer. RECENT FINDINGS: Through seven population-based studies performed in five different countries, it was possible to identify that Brazil was the country with the lowest intake of polyphenols, whereas Poland had the highest dietary intake. The most ingested subclasses of polyphenols in different countries were phenolic acids and flavonoids, and non-alcoholic beverages (coffee, tea, and orange juice) were the foods that most contributed to the intake of polyphenols. Despite the attempt to standardize this study to obtain worldwide intake estimates that could be comparable, gaps were found regarding the assessment of food consumption, standardization to obtain the polyphenol content of foods in Phenol-Explorer, calculation in aglycone equivalents, and caloric adjustment of the estimates. There is a need for more studies on the dietary polyphenols intake of representative samples of populations from different countries to collate more data on the quantities consumed and the main contributing foods.

EQ-5D-5L Population Norms for China Derived From a National Health Survey

ObjectivesTo develop the EQ-5D-5L (5L) population norms for China and to assess the relationship between various factors and 5L data. MethodsThis study used data derived from the Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents, a national sample survey of 21 909 representative participants aged 12 years and above. Participants’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was measured by the 5L. Their socioeconomic characteristics, behavioral factors, and health conditions were also obtained from the survey. Norm scores were generated and compared for different socioeconomic variables. Multiple linear and logistic regressions were used to assess the relationships of the 3 kinds of variables with the 5L utility, visual analog scale (VAS) scores and 5L health problems. ResultsThe mean (SD) age of participants was 39.4 (18.9) years, and 50.0% of them were female. The mean (SD) utility and VAS scores were 0.940 (0.138) and 73.4 (21.6), respectively. Participants reported considerably more problems in anxiety/depression (26.2%) and pain/discomfort (22.2%) dimensions. The gender difference in HRQoL is attenuated. The participants older than 75 years suffered from a sharp decline in HRQoL; the participants in Shanghai and Tibet provinces reported lower utility and VAS scores and more health problems. Those who were younger, with better socioeconomic status and healthier lifestyles, and without diseases tended to report higher utility and VAS scores and fewer health problems. ConclusionsThis study derived the 5L population norms for China based on a representative population sample.

The effect of personality traits on over-the-top service use and binge-watching

With the freedom to consume content on preferred devices at any time as long as there is an Internet connection, the growing demand for over-the-top (OTT) services is evident. In conjunction with the rise of OTT services, binge-watching has become a prevalent behavior. In this research, we explore whether personality traits including the Big Five and need for cognition wield an effect on OTT use and binge-watching. We used a large, diverse, population representative sample from South Korea to investigate this topic. Results indicated that openness to experience and need for cognition were positively related to OTT use. Openness to experience, emotional stability, conscientiousness, and need for cognition had a negative association with binge-watching. When the sample was split by OTT frequency, the binge-watching effects were obtained exclusively for daily OTT users. For non-daily OTT users, most of the personality traits did not exert an effect on binge-watching. Implications of the current findings as well as limitations and future research are presented.

CORRESPONDENCE MATCHING IN 3D MODELS FOR 3D HAND FITTING

Upper limb prosthetic is an area of medical research and development that aims to restore functionality and improve the quality of life of people affected by the loss of one or both upper limbs. The development and implementation of 3D scanning tools and analysis of 3D scanning data requires the use of specialized analysis methods that ensure the achievement of the required indicators. It should take into account the impact of the model resolution on the result. This paper is devoted to the analysis of finding matches between a point cloud of a hand model and another point cloud using Gromov-Wasserstein distance. For analysis, a subset of the MANO dataset was employed, containing a substantial volume of data and serving as a representative sample of the human population. The results obtained indicate the possibility of using this approach in the processing and analysis of three-dimensional data, which serves as one of the stages of designing individualized prostheses.

The role of childhood cumulative trauma in the risk of lifetime PTSD: An epidemiological study

Cumulative trauma is usually devastating and can lead to severe psychological consequences, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Exposure to various types of traumas, particularly during childhood, can be even more deleterious than the sheer number of events experienced. This epidemiological study is the first to investigate the impact of discrete childhood traumatic exposure on the risk of developing lifetime PTSD in a representative sample of the general population of the two biggest Brazilian cities. Participants were aged between 15 and 75 years old, living in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, who had experienced traumatic events (N = 3,231). The PTSD diagnosis was assessed using the DSM-IV criteria through the version 2.1 of Composite International Diagnostic Interview. To operationalize childhood cumulative trauma, we considered the sum of 15 different childhood trauma categories that occurred before PTSD onset. The final multivariate logistic regression model indicated a strong relationship between the number of discrete types of childhood traumas and the likelihood of the lifetime PTSD development. The lifetime PTSD risk increased 28 % with each different type of childhood trauma when adjusted by confounds. Our study strengthens the evidence associating childhood cumulative trauma to increased lifetime PTSD risk.

Newspapers` Reportage and Perception of Yenagoa Residents of Climate Change and Adaptation in Bayelsa State, Nigeria

Climate change has been identified as a significant threat to human and natural systems, with many communities around the world being adversely affected. The impact of climate change is especially pronounced in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, Bayelsa State, where rising sea levels, increased flooding, and erosion threaten the lives and livelihoods of the population. This study explored media reportage on climate change and adaptation in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, with a focus on Yenagoa, the State`s capital. Using a quantitative approach, the study analysed newspapers` (Vanguard, The Sun, and Punch newspapers) reportage of climate change issues from October 2022 to March 2023; assessed the level of public awareness of climate change and its impacts; and examined the effect of climate change on Yenagoa and the perception of its residents on their attitudes towards climate change adaptation. The Agenda Setting Theory was used for this study. Data were collected through the use of a self-administered questionnaire distributed to a representative sample of the adult population in Yenagoa. Also, Content Analysis method was adopyed. The findings indicated that newspapers` reportage on climate change in Bayelsa State is limited and that the public has a low level of awareness on the subject. The study recommended the need for increased media attention to climate change issues, and the importance of public education and awareness-raising efforts to promote climate change adaptation in the region.

Sexual health among the oldest old: a population-based study among people aged 85years and older in Stockholm, Sweden.

Sexual health is an important contributor to the well-being and life satisfaction of people aged ≥85years, known as the oldest old. However, little is known about sexual health in this population. To examine aspects of sexual health among the oldest old and explore its associations with sociodemographic, health-related, and lifestyle factors. We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study including 183 individuals aged ≥85years who were residents in Stockholm County, Sweden. Responders (response rate, 63%) were interviewed on a range of health, sociodemographic, and lifestyle parameters, including aspects of sexual health. Participants' responses to the sexual health items were reported as proportions with 95% CIs. Associations were examined with multivariable logistic regression. We examined sexual activity, sexual satisfaction, problems related to sexual health, and inquiries on sexual health by a health care provider. Twelve percent of participants (95% CI, 8%-17.6%) were sexually active, and 63.9% (95% CI, 56.5%-70.9%) were satisfied with their sexual lives during the past year. A third (35%; 95% CI, 28.4%-42.2%) reported at least a problem related to sexual health. Only 2.2% (95% CI, 0.6%-5.5%) were asked about sexual health by a health care provider, while 8.2% (95% CI, 4.7%-13.2%) identified a need for such an assessment. Yet, 85.2% (95% CI, 79.3%-90.0%) indicated no need for their sexual health to be evaluated by a health care provider. Being partnered was positively associated with sexual activity (adjusted odds ratio, 9.13; 95% CI, 2.53-32.90), whereas having strong social support was positively associated with being satisfied with one's sexual life (adjusted odds ratio, 2.96; 95% CI, 1.53-5.74). Health care providers should be proactive in assessing the sexual health of the oldest individuals. A representative sample of an underresearched population was used in this study. However, the generalizability of our findings may be restricted due to the small sample. To maintain statistical power from a relatively small sample, we might have lost explanatory power. Given the observational cross-sectional nature of the data, we cannot draw causal inferences based on the observed associations. A 10th of participants were sexually active, and the majority were satisfied with their sexual lives. Although many participants reported problems related to sexual health, few expressed the need to discuss sexual health with health care providers. Future studies should explore potential barriers to addressing sexual health and unmet health care needs among the oldest old.

The social determinants of migrant domestic worker (MDW) health and well-being in the Western Pacific Region: A Scoping Review.

The health and well-being of transnational migrant domestic workers (MDWs) is a pressing but largely neglected public health concern. The Asia Pacific region is home to over 20% of the global MDW population. Living and working conditions, social contexts, political environments, and migration regimes are recognized as consequential to the health of this population, but currently no synthesis of available literature to prioritize research or policy agenda setting for MDW has yet been conducted. This scoping review screened 6,006 peer-reviewed articles and 1,217 gray literature sources, identifying 173 articles and 276 gray literature sources that reported key MDW health outcomes, social determinants of health, and related interventions. The majority of identified studies were observational and focused on the prevalence of common mental disorders and chronic physical conditions, with most studies lacking population representativeness. Identified social determinants of health were primarily concerned with personal social and financial resources, and health knowledge and behaviors, poor living and working conditions, community resources, experienced stigma and discrimination, poor healthcare access, exploitation within the MDW employment industry, and weak governance. Six interventional studies were identified that targeted individual-level health determinants such as financial and health knowledge with mixed effectiveness. Future population representative epidemiological and respondent driven sampling studies are needed to estimate population health burdens. In addition, randomized control trials and public health intervention studies are needed to improve women's health outcomes and address proximal health determinants to reduce health inequalities. Leveraging social networks and community facing non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are promising directions to overcome access to care for this population.

Heterogeneity in trips to green natural spaces: A travel cost approach across UK sites

The Covid-19 pandemic and related lockdowns saw a subsequent sharp rise in demand for outdoor recreation. This has resulted in congestion and particular stress on managing authorities of green natural spaces. This study examines drivers for outdoor recreation, across UK sites, for a representative sample of the English population during lockdowns and the easing of restrictions. Using a travel cost approach, this study focuses on addressing demand heterogeneity through a finite mixture model and cost sensitivity and finds that the characteristics of green and natural spaces English respondents visit are not always affecting trip frequency. Additionally, social inequalities and deprivation do not influence or had an inverse effect on demand for visits to UK green and natural spaces. When accounting for heterogeneity, a large variability in the frequency of visits is observed, with frequent visitors being less sensitive to changes in travel cost. Finally, we find that UK residents are less responsive to changes in travel cost that could be caused by increases in petrol prices, or in changes in their income. Future management decisions for green natural spaces need to account for the differences between casual and frequent outdoor recreationists.

Consumer impatience: A key motive for Covid-19 vaccination

We study the behavioral determinants of COVID-19 vaccination uptake. The vaccine-pass policy, implemented in several countries in 2021, conditioned the access to leisure and consumption places to being vaccinated against COVID-19 and created an unprecedented situation where individuals’ access to consumption goods and vaccine status were interrelated. We rely on a quasi-hyperbolic discounting model to study the plausible relationships between time preference and the decision to vaccinate in such context. We test the predictions of our model using data collected from a representative sample of the French population (N = 1034) in August and September 2021. Respondents were asked about their COVID-19 vaccination status (zero, one, or two doses), as well as their economic and social preferences. Preference elicitations were undertaken online through incentivized tasks, with parallel collection of self-stated preferences. Factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination were investigated using a logistic model. Both elicited and stated impatience were found to be positively associated with COVID-19 vaccination decisions. These results suggest that impatience is a key motivational lever for vaccine uptake in a context where the vaccination decision is multidimensional and impacts the consumption potential. Results also serve to highlight the potential effectiveness of public communications campaigns based on time preferences to increase vaccination coverage.

Suicidal ideation in patients with diabetes and childhood abuse – The mediating role of personality functioning: Results of a German representative population-based study

AimsSuicidal ideation (SID) in patients with diabetes mellitus is increasingly acknowledged. Still, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We examined SID prevalences in patients with diabetes, its association with different types of abuse, and a mediating effect of personality functioning. MethodsIn a representative population sample (N = 2,515), diabetes, SID, abuse (ICAST-R), personality functioning (OPD-SQS), and depression/anxiety (PHQ-4) were assessed by self-report. Statistical analyses comprised Chi2-Tests, logistic regression and mediation analyses. ResultsThe prevalence of SID (21.8 %) was three fold higher in patients with diabetes compared to the general population. Abuse further increased the likelihood to report SID in diabetes patients (sexual: 48.1 % vs. 18.2 %; χ2(1) = 12.233, p <.001; emotional: 35.7 % vs. 15.7 %; χ2(1) = 10.892, p <.001). A dose–response relationship between the number of abuse experiences and SID was observed (one abuse experience: OR = 1.138, 95 %-CI [0.433, 2.990], p =.793, >2 abuse experiences: OR = 2.693, 95 %-CI [1.278, 5.675], p =.009). Impaired personality functioning had an indirect effect on the association between emotional abuse and SID (b = 0.25, 95 %-CI [0.037, 0.551]). ConclusionsDiabetes patients experience increased SID prevalences, especially those with emotional or sexual abuse. In individuals with a history of emotional abuse, impaired personality functioning partly explained SID and should therefore be considered and addressed in this patient group.

Current status of contact lenses usage in Korea: A population-based cohort study 2021.

To investigate trends in contact lens usage in a nationally representative sample of the Korean population in 2021. For this retrospective study, we analyzed data of 3,601 Korean participants aged 10-59 years, from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES 2021 version), who underwent eye examination, of whom 1,136 individuals (274 men and 862 women) were contact lens users. The demographic trend among Korean contact lens wearers was examined using statistical analyses to investigate the changes in their contact lens-wearing experience, duration of lens use, type of lens used, location of purchase, presence of an Eye Care Practitioner(ECP)'s prescription, lens-related ophthalmic complications, and type of lenses worn at the time of complications, according to sex. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the association of each variable with the rate of complications and use of soft lenses. The average age of the contact lens users was 33.42±0.33 years, with 70.36% (weighted percentage) of users being women who used contact lenses for significantly longer periods than men (p<0.001). Additionally, only wearing of cosmetic lenses was significantly correlated with the occurrence of complications (p = 0.006), and 6.76% of users purchased lenses without a prescription. Multivariate analysis among the contact lens users revealed a significant relationship between the complication rate and female sex (p = 0.002), pre-existing eye disease diagnosed by ECPs (p = 0.0288), and duration of contact lens use (p<0.0001). We identified sex differences in contact lens usage trends in Korea. The main changes observed were an increase in middle-aged lens users and a decrease in female users compared to that in the early 2000s. In addition, contact lens complications were significantly associated with sex and pre-existing eye disease. Therefore, those wearing contact lenses for extended periods should exercise caution and consult eye care specialists in the presence of any symptoms.

Higher ultra-processed food intake is associated with an increased incidence risk of cardiovascular disease: the Tehran lipid and glucose study

BackgroundCardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death worldwide, although limited data are currently available regarding the impact of consuming ultra-processed food (UPF) on its incidence. Given the increased consumption of UPF in Iran, we aimed to investigate the association between UPF intake and CVD risk.MethodsIndividuals without CVD (n = 2050) aged ≥ 30 years old were recruited from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Dietary data were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and UPF intakes were assessed based on the Nova food classification. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for potential confounders were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the risk of CVD across tertiles of UPF intake.ResultsA 10.1% incidence of CVD occurred over a median follow-up of 10.6 years, with a 22% increase in CVD risk per each 50 g/day UPF intake. Participants with the highest intake of UPF had a 68% greater incidence of CVD compared to those with the lowest intake (HR = 1.68, 95% CI=1.14–2.48) after controlling for potential confounders. Regarding sub-groups of UPF, participants in the 3rd tertile compared to the reference had a significantly increased risk of CVD (HR = 1.56, 95% CI=1.04–2.34). Nevertheless, intake of bread, fast food, sweetened beverages, sweets and desserts, high-fat dairy products, and other UPFs were not associated with greater CVD risk.ConclusionOur findings support the hypothesis that the incidence of CVD is enhanced with the higher consumption of UPF in a representative sample of the Iranian population.
