Association between periodontitis and cardiovascular risk in Spanish employed adults-The Workers' Oral Health study.

Periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are highly prevalent non-communicable diseases, sharing an inflammatory pathogenesis and common risk factors. The objective of the present research is to assess the association between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease risk in a representative sample of the Spanish-employed population. Cross-sectional data were obtained between 2008 and 2011 in the Workers' Oral Health (WORALTH) epidemiological study. Periodontal examinations were based on the evaluation of clinical attachment loss (CAL) and community periodontal index (CPI). Participants also underwent a medical check-up and answered a comprehensive health questionnaire. With this information, participants were categorized into three levels of CVD risk using the systemic coronary risk estimation (SCORE) algorithm for low-risk European countries. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were determined with multiple logistic regression models for the association between periodontal status and CVD risk. Data from 4224 individuals were analyzed. The overall prevalence of high CVD risk (SCORE ≥ 5%) was 5.1%. The prevalence of SCORE ≥ 5% was 3.4%, 9.4%, and 15.2% for CAL 0-3 mm, 4-5 mm, and ≥6 mm, respectively (p < .001), and 6.2%, 6.5%, and 14.6% for CPI ≤2, 3, and 4, respectively (p < .001). Individuals with CPI = 4 presented an OR of 1.50 (95% confidence interval, CI [1.04; 2.17]) for high SCORE values, after adjusting for confounders (age, sex, and smoking habit). Periodontitis, defined by the presence of deep periodontal pockets (≥6 mm), was significantly associated with high CVD risk (SCORE ≥ 5%) in a representative sample of the employed population in Spain.

Summer temperature and emergency room visits due to urinary tract infection in South Korea: a national time-stratified case-crossover study

BackgroundAlthough urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common and severe public health concern, and there are clear biological mechanisms between UTI and hot temperatures, few studies have addressed the association between hot temperatures and UTI.MethodsWe designed a time-stratified case-crossover study using a population-representative sample cohort based on the National Health Insurance System (NHIS) in South Korea. We obtained all NHIS-based hospital admissions through the emergency room (ER) due to UTI (using a primary diagnostic code) from 2006 to 2019. We assigned satellite-based reanalyzed daily summer (June to September) average temperatures as exposures, based on residential districts of beneficiaries (248 districts in South Korea). The conditional logistic regression was performed to evaluate the association between summer temperature and UTI outcome.ResultsA total of 4,436 ER visits due to UTI were observed during the summer between 2006 and 2019 among 1,131,714 NHIS beneficiaries. For 20% increase in summer temperatures (0–2 lag days), the odd ratio (OR) was 1.06 (95% CI: 1.02–1.10) in the total population, and the association was more prominent in the elderly (people aged 65 y or older; OR:1.11, 95% CI: 1.05–1.17), females (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.05–1.19), and people with diabetes history (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.07–1.23). The effect modification by household income was different in the total and elderly populations. Furthermore, the association between summer temperature and UTI increased during the study period in the total population.ConclusionsOur results are consistent with the hypothesis that higher summer temperatures increase the risk of severe UTIs, and the risk might be different by sub-populations.

Video Game Addiction in Young People (8-18 Years Old) after the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Grey Area of Addiction and the Phenomenon of "Gaming Non-Pathological Abuse (GNPA)".

In the literature, video game addiction in youths is correlated with dysfunctional symptoms of anxiety, emotional disorders, and mood disorders, and the pandemic period of 2020-2022 has favored the aggravation of this behavioral addiction. Therefore, we identified the need to analyze this phenomenon with an emphasis on the risks and correlates related to deviance and maladjustment from a prospective perspective, seeking to understand the impact of the individual variables examined. To demonstrate whether the condition of "gaming non-pathological abuse" (GNPA) promotes psychopathological features of clinical interest, in the absence of a diagnosis of "gaming disorder" (GD). A search performed on PubMed and administration of an ad hoc sociological questionnaire were used to investigate individual variables of criminological interest in a representative population sample (531 males/females, 8-18 years old, M: 14.4, SD: 2.5). Statistical analysis showed that after the pandemic period, digital video game addiction was reinforced, feeding psychopathological traits consistent with anxiety, emotional disorders, and mood disorders. Variables correlated with impulsive, aggressive, and violent behavior related to age, gender, socio-environmental and economic background, and the severity of digital video game addiction. In the youth population (8-18 years), "gaming non-pathological abuse" (GNPA) is related to aggressive, impulsive and violent behaviors that foster phenomena of social maladjustment and deviance, especially in individuals living in disadvantaged or otherwise complex socio-economic and family contexts. Looking forward, the study of structural and functional personality profiles is essential in order to anticipate and reduce the future risk of psychopathological and criminal behavior.

2146 Evaluation of pulmonary hypertension by echocardiogram in geriatrics patients with SARSCOV2 from a Latin American cohort

Abstract Introduction Pulmonary hypertension evaluated by echocardiography and ROX index in older patients with COVID-19 could be linked to worse outcomes. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort of adult patients with COVID-19. The main objective was to evaluate pulmonary hypertension as an echocardiographic finding and its association with hard outcomes in patients with COVID-19 infection. In the inferential statistical analysis, the OR with confidence intervals greater than 95% was used as a measure of association. Qualitative variables were evaluated using the Chi square test or Fisher’s exact test. In quantitative variables, the Student’s T test, or Mann–Whitney test, was used. Results 306 individuals with COVID-19 infection were included; the majority of these were men (78% vs. 22% women). Patients who died had lower ROX values at 2 hours compared to survivors (4,5 with a SD of 3,6–5,6, vs. 5,8 with a SD of 4,7–6,1, respectively). This trend was maintained at 12 hours (4,9 with a SD of 3,8–6,0 for deceased patients vs. 7,8 with a SD of 5,2–8,7 for survivors). For the ROX index at 2 hours, an OR adjusted for age and gender of 8,5 with a CI of 2,0–91,4 was found, and at 12 hours, an OR of 17,6 with a CI of 2,8–93,6 was found. Low values of the ROX index were associated with pulmonary hypertension (p = 0.048) and higher mortality (p = 0.037). Conclusions In patients with COVID-19, the presence of pulmonary hypertension estimated by ecocardiography and the ROX index is associated with worse outcomes, including a higher rate of comorbidities and mortality in patients over 70 years of age. Prospective studies with a more representative population sample are required to validate the results found here.

Asociación entre las cadenas ligeras de neurofilamento en suero (sNfL) y los trastornos neurológicos en una muestra representativa de adultos en los Estados Unidos: un estudio transversal

BackgroundWhile increased neurofilament light chain (NfL) in serum concentrations are linked to the progression of several neurological conditions, their distribution and implications within the general adult population remain largely unexplored. The current research aims to clarify the relationship among serum NfL levels and neurological disorders in a broad and representative population sample. MethodsWe utilized information gathered from 1,751 adults involved in the 2013-2014 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Our analytical approach encompassed logistic regression, smoothed curve fitting, and subgroup analyses to identify potential correlations between serum NfL levels and neurological conditions, including depression, severe hearing and visual impairments, stroke, subjective memory deficits, and sleep problems. ResultsAfter adjusting for confounders, we found that higher serum NfL concentrations were significantly associated with increased risks of depression, stroke, subjective memory deficits, and longer sleep duration (P<.05). Subgroup analyses supported these findings. Additionally, BMI significantly influenced the relationship between serum NfL levels and subjective memory deficits. ConclusionOur research shows that higher serum NfL levels are strongly related to an elevated risk for several neurological disorders. These findings highlight the role of serum NfL serving as a critical marker for early detection and monitoring of neurological conditions, emphasizing its importance in both clinical and public health settings.

National health examination surveys; a source of critical data.

The aim of this paper is to contribute technical arguments to the debate about the importance of health examination surveys and their continued use during the post-pandemic health financing crisis, and in the context of a technological innovation boom that offers new ways of collecting and analysing individual health data (e.g. artificial intelligence). Technical considerations demonstrate that health examination surveys make an irreplaceable contribution to the local availability of primary health data that can be used in a range of further studies (e.g. normative, burden-of-disease, care cascade, cost and policy impact studies) essential for informing several phases of the health planning cycle (e.g. surveillance, prioritization, resource mobilization and policy development). Examples of the use of health examination survey data in the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region (i.e. Finland, Italy, Malta and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) and the WHO Region of the Americas (i.e. Chile, Mexico, Peru and the United States of America) are presented, and reasons why health provider-led data cannot replace health examination survey data are discussed (e.g. underestimation of morbidity and susceptibility to bias). In addition, the importance of having nationally representative random samples of the general population is highlighted and we argue that health examination surveys make a critical contribution to external quality control for a country's health system by increasing the transparency and accountability of health spending. Finally, we consider future technological advances that can improve survey fieldwork and suggest ways of ensuring health examination surveys are sustainable in low-resource settings.

Social Stigma and COVID-19 Vaccine Refusal in France.

In 2021, French health authorities strongly promoted vaccination against COVID-19. The authors assumed that refusing this vaccine became a stigma, and they investigated potential public stigma toward unvaccinated people among the French population. A representative sample of the French adult population (N = 2,015) completed an online questionnaire in September 2021. The authors focused on participants who were already vaccinated against COVID-19 or intended to get vaccinated (N = 1,742). A cluster analysis was used to obtain contrasted attitudinal profiles, and the authors investigated associated factors with logistic regressions. Regarding attitudes toward unvaccinated people, a majority of respondents supported several pejorative statements, and a significant minority also endorsed social rejection attitudes. The authors found four contrasting attitudinal profiles: moral condemnation only (32% of respondents), full stigma (26%), no stigma (26%), and stigma rejection (16%). Early vaccination, civic motives for it, faith in science, rejection of political extremes, and being aged 65 or older were the main factors associated with stigmatizing attitudes toward unvaccinated people. The authors found some evidence of stigmatization toward unvaccinated people, but further research is needed, especially to investigate perceived stigmatization among them. The authors discuss their results with reference to the concept of "folk devils" and from a public health perspective.

Contributions of Artificial Intelligence to Analysis of Gut Microbiota in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder whose etiology is not known today, but everything indicates that it is multifactorial. For example, genetic and epigenetic factors seem to be involved in the etiology of ASD. In recent years, there has been an increase in studies on the implications of gut microbiota (GM) on the behavior of children with ASD given that dysbiosis in GM may trigger the onset, development and progression of ASD through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. At the same time, significant progress has occurred in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of articles using AI to analyze GM in individuals with ASD. In line with the PRISMA model, 12 articles using AI to analyze GM in ASD were selected. Outcomes reveal that the majority of relevant studies on this topic have been conducted in China (33.3%) and Italy (25%), followed by the Netherlands (16.6%), Mexico (16.6%) and South Korea (8.3%). The bacteria Bifidobacterium is the most relevant biomarker with regard to ASD. Although AI provides a very promising approach to data analysis, caution is needed to avoid the over-interpretation of preliminary findings. A first step must be taken to analyze GM in a representative general population and ASD samples in order to obtain a GM standard according to age, sex and country. Thus, more work is required to bridge the gap between AI in mental health research and clinical care in ASD.

The Brief Symptom Inventory-9 (BSI-9): Development and validation in a German general population sample

BackgroundThe Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18) is a self-report questionnaire with three subscales, somatisation, anxiety, and depression, based on longer measures of distress. The present study proposes a shorter, nine-item version (BSI-9) of the BSI-18 as a brief screening tool for distress.MethodsConfirmatory factor analyses and reliability and validity analyses were carried out using a representative sample of the German general population. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrates a good model fit for the three-dimensional BSI-9.ResultsThe total scale was found to have strong internal consistency (αCronbach = 0.87 for the global severity index). The internal consistency coefficients of the three-item subscales reflect the brevity of these scales (somatisation αCronbach = 0.72, depression α Cronbach = 0.79, anxiety αCronbach = 0.68). The subscales were found to be significantly related with subscales of the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 and Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25.LimitationsThe present study used a limited number of distress measures, and a more recent dataset would be useful to provide a more current picture of the general population’s distress levels.ConclusionsThe BSI-9 provides a short, valid, and reliable screener for distress in the general population. Future work should examine its utility in clinical settings and different cultural contexts.

Can ChatGPT read who you are?

The interplay between artificial intelligence (AI) and psychology, particularly in personality assessment, represents an important emerging area of research. Accurate personality trait estimation is crucial not only for enhancing personalization in human-computer interaction but also for a wide variety of applications ranging from mental health to education. This paper analyzes the capability of a generic chatbot, ChatGPT, to effectively infer personality traits from short texts. We report the results of a comprehensive user study featuring texts written in Czech by a representative population sample of 155 participants. Their self-assessments based on the Big Five Inventory (BFI) questionnaire serve as the ground truth. We compare the personality trait estimations made by ChatGPT against those by human raters and report ChatGPT's competitive performance in inferring personality traits from text. We also uncover a ‘positivity bias’ in ChatGPT's assessments across all personality dimensions and explore the impact of prompt composition on accuracy. This work contributes to the understanding of AI capabilities in psychological assessment, highlighting both the potential and limitations of using large language models for personality inference. Our research underscores the importance of responsible AI development, considering ethical implications such as privacy, consent, autonomy, and bias in AI applications.

Wisdom affinity in the general population

BackgroundWisdom is an important coping resource for difficult and ambiguous life situations. Wisdom trainings have been developed in clinical and non-clinical settings. What has been missing so far are representative data on wisdom affinity from the general population. These are important regarding needs assessments and identification of risk groups with low wisdom affinity and potential problems in coping with difficult and ambiguous life situations.MethodThe study examined a population-representative sample of 2509 persons. Socio-demographic data, presence of chronic and mental illnesses was assessed, and wisdom attitudes by the 12-WD Wisdom Scale. The surveys were carried out by means of interviews and self-report questionnaires at the respondents’ homes, done by an experienced social research company (USUMA GmbH).ResultsOnly 6% of the whole sample appeared to be highly wisdom-affirmative (12-WD mean score 10 on scale 0–10), whereas 4% may appear low wisdom-affirm, due to very low agreement (12 WD mean score 0–4). Most of the moderately wisdom-affirm people had a religious denomination (70.9%), whereas only 57–59% of the high or low wisdom-affirm persons reported religious affiliations. Low wisdom-affirm were most often chronically ill (25%), with mental or physical illness in similar frequency, and had significantly more unemployment times than persons with higher wisdom scores. Wisdom affinity was independent from age, gender and age, household situation, and higher school education.ConclusionIt must be assumed that people with socio-medical risk factors also have impairments in their wisdom-related problem-solving strategies, and that these can be of interest for transdiagnostic wisdom trainings in prevention or rehabilitation, which has shown positive effects.

Initial development and validation of item banks to measure problematic hypersexuality.

Problematic Hypersexuality (PH) is defined as a distress caused by hypersexuality, to the extent that seeking treatment is considered. PH was previously measured with instruments stemming from different perspectives on problems related to hypersexuality. These instruments might best be analyzed in unison to discover the most optimal set of characteristics to measure PH. A total of 58 items were investigated with Item Response Theory (IRT). We included 1211 participants (592 women, 618 men, 1 other) from a representative Dutch general population sample of 18 years or older. In addition, 371 participants (116 women, 253 men, 2 other) in a web-based survey who sought information on their current level of PH were included. This latter group was divided into those that did or did not consider treatment and group differences in item averages were assessed. After item selection, 26 out of 58 items were retained and divided in two scales: Emotion Dysregulation-PH - 9 items representing the distressing emotional patterns coinciding with hypersexual preoccupation - and Negative Effects-PH - 17 items representing the negative consequences of patterns of hypersexual thoughts and behavior. Assumptions for IRT analyses were met (unidimensionality, local independence and monotonicity). After an IRT graded response model was fit, the scales showed sufficient reliability for the target population of hypersexual individuals. In the general population the scales showed large floor effects and were less reliable. With this study a first step is taken in validating two complementary item banks to measure PH. Further development of the item banks should include the investigation of responsiveness. New items should be constructed to assess less-explored areas of PH and improve differentiating power of the scales. This study showed that diagnostic accuracy for PH is currently difficult to attain with a survey, even when using an extended item set representing the most unique characteristics of PH.

Who are the immigrants that Israeli Jews prefer? The interplay between reasons for migration, religion, and religiosity

This study focuses on the impact of three attributes of migrants – their reasons for migration, religion, and level of religiosity – on public support for allowing migrants to come and live in Israel. We rely on a factorial survey that was conducted in a representative sample of the Israeli Jewish population analyzing the assessments of 600 respondents of various vignettes (N = 3,595) of hypothetical migrants about admitting them to the country. The findings reveal that Israeli Jews do not evaluate all immigrant groups equally. Preferences for specific groups of migrants are primarily structured along two main attributes: religion and reasons for migration. The result is a hierarchical distinction between immigrants of Jewish ancestry and those who are non-Jewish. Jewish repatriates are perceived as “deserving migrants” who can make legitimate claims about belonging to the host society. As such, they enjoy an ethno-religious premium based on ancestral rights. By contrast, there is less support for the entry of non-Jewish migrants, whether asylum seekers or labor migrants, as their presence is viewed as a threat to the Jewish character of the state and the hegemony of the Jewish majority. The impact of the immigrants’ attributes on attitudes varies based on the level of religiosity of the Jewish population, especially in the case of non-Jewish migrants. Support is stronger in the case of secular respondents and much weaker among their more religious counterparts. The findings are discussed in light of existing theories.

Are Children Following High Trajectories of Disruptive Behaviors in Early Childhood More or Less Likely to Follow Concurrent High Trajectories of Internalizing Problems?

The developmental association between disruptive behaviors (DBs: hyperactivity-impulsivity, non-compliance, physical aggression) and internalizing problems in early childhood is not well understood and has generated competing hypotheses and mixed results. Using a person-centered strategy, the present study aimed to examine concurrent trajectories of DBs and trajectories of internalizing problems from age 1.5 to 5 years in a population-representative sample (N = 2057; 50.7% boys). Six trajectories of DBs and three trajectories of internalizing problems, based on parent reports and obtained via latent growth modeling across five periods of assessment, were used as longitudinal indicators of each type of behaviors. Children following low or moderate trajectories served as the reference class. Compared to children in the reference class, those in trajectory classes characterized by high levels of co-occurring DBs (OR = 6.60) and, to a lesser extent, those in single high DB classes (OR = 2.78) were more likely to follow a high trajectory of internalizing problems simultaneously. These results support a multiple problem hypothesis regarding the association between DBs and internalizing problems, consistent with a developmental perspective that includes a general factor underpinning different psychopathologies. These findings highlight the importance of considering the co-occurrence between DBs and internalizing problems when studying either construct in children.

The prevalence of misophonia in a representative population-based survey in Germany.

Misophonia is a new disorder, currently defined as significant emotional and physiological distress when exposed to certain sounds. Although there is a growing body of literature on the characteristics of the disorder, the prevalence in the general population is still relatively unknown. This study therefore aims at determining the prevalence and symptom severity of misophonia in a large and representative general population sample in Germany. To examine the prevalence of misophonic sounds, misophonic reactions and misophonia severity, a cross-sectional population representative survey in Germany has been conducted. Participants (N = 2.522) were questioned retrospectively about misophonic symptoms using the Amsterdam Misophonie Scale - Revised (AMISOS-R). Overall 33.3% reported to be sensitive to at least one specific misophonic sound. Within the total sample, subthreshold symptoms were reported by 21.3%, mild symptoms were reported by 9.9%, moderate to severe symptoms were reported by 2.1%, and severe to extreme symptoms were reported in 0.1% of participants. Based on the diverging presentations and prevalence rates of misophonic sounds, reactions and symptoms according to the severity, it seems worthwhile to conceptualize misophonia as a rather continuous spectrum disorder (subthreshold, mild, moderate to severe), still taking into account that an additional categorical diagnostic approach might be necessary to derive a diagnosis in clinical practice.

The Brief Symptom Inventory in the Swiss general population: Presentation of norm scores and predictors of psychological distress.

Psychological distress is an important and frequent health problem. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) allows screening for psychological distress in clinical, general and research populations. We aimed to provide normative data for the BSI and the BSI-18 for the Swiss general population: We 1) present psychometric properties, 2) develop a Swiss T-standardization and validate it using a clinical sample, 3) describe psychological distress in the Swiss general population and the clinical sample, and 4) compare the means and T-standardized scores of the Swiss general population to different German norm populations. Using a cross-sectional study design, we invited a representative sample of the Swiss general population aged 18-75 years to the study. A sample of psychotherapy outpatients had competed the BSI before start of their therapy. We calculated scores for the nine scales of the BSI (three of them constitute the BSI-18), the T-standardization and the following BSI indices: Global Severity Index (GSI), Positive Symptom Total (PST), Positive Symptom Distress Index (PSDI), and Caseness (reaching T≥63 on the GSI or T≥63 on at least two of the scales). A total of 1238 general population participants completed the BSI (41.8% male; mean age 48.9 years). The BSI had good psychometric properties. The Swiss T-standardization showed good validity when applied in the clinical sample. Females reached a significantly higher GSI score than males (p<0.001). Older participants (p = 0.026), those with higher education (p <0.001), and those employed or retired (p<0.001) reached lower scores than participants aged 18-25 years, those with compulsory schooling, and unemployed participants, respectively. A total of 18.1% (CI: 16.0-20.5) participants of the general population and 75.2% (CI: 73.7-76.7) of the psychotherapy patients were considered cases with psychological distress. Our study presents detailed normative data for the BSI and the BSI-18 based on a representative sample of the Swiss general population. This information will be helpful for clinical applications and research in the Swiss and international context.

P-480 Demographic and family-based predictors of Dutch societal attitudes towards surrogacy

Abstract Study question What factors shape societal attitudes toward surrogacy in a representative sample of the adult population? Summary answer Participants’ demographic factors (education, sexuality, ethnicity, religiosity) and factors related to surrogacy families (parental composition, social bond oocyte donor) predict attitudes toward surrogacy. What is known already Attitudes toward surrogacy families frequently have a negative influence on the well-being of these families. Counselling will help surrogacy families cope with negative reactions. Current debates regarding legislation on surrogacy show diverse attitudes towards surrogacy. Previous studies hint at attitudes toward surrogacy being influenced by demographic factors such as age, education, sexual preference, ethnicity, urbanization and religiosity, and factors of surrogacy families such as parental composition (cisgender different-sex parents, same-sex parents and transgender parents) and social or genetic bonds between the surrogate, oocyte donor and parents. Study design, size, duration This vignette study included a representative sample of 1075 adults from the Dutch population, who filled out a questionnaire in June 2023. The vignettes used were descriptions of a surrogacy family and gave context to the questionnaire. Vignettes varied the following aspects; sexuality and gender of parents, and social and genetic bonds between the parents, the surrogate, and the oocyte donor. Participants were asked about their attitudes on four randomly assigned vignettes. Participants/materials, setting, methods Demographic information of the participants was collected via questionnaires. We designed vignettes accompanied by a questionnaire to measure attitudes (α between .81 and .91). Multilevel regression analysis was performed with attitudes as the dependent variable and demographic factors (age, education, sexual preference, ethnicity, urbanization and religiosity) and aspects of surrogacy families (parental composition, genetic and social bonds with the surrogate and oocyte donors) as predictors. Main results and the role of chance Attitudes are influenced by most studied demographic factors. People were more likely to have positive attitudes when they were either higher educated, identified themselves as non-heterosexual, had a Dutch background, or were less religious. Age and urbanization did not predict attitudes. Factors related to the parental composition of a surrogacy family predicted attitudes. A cisgender man and a cisgender woman were judged more positively compared to two cisgender men or when a transgender person was involved. Oocyte donation from a friend or sister was judged more negatively compared to an oocyte from the oocyte bank (without a social bond to the parents). Attitudes were more negative when oocyte donation took place than when oocytes of an intended mother were utilized (p values range between .007 and &amp;lt; .001). There was no difference between the presence and absence of social and genetic bonds between parents and surrogates. There were no differences in the presence or absence of a genetic bond between parents and oocyte donors. No differences were found between a surrogate using her own oocytes compared to donated oocytes. Limitations, reasons for caution The study was limited to one European country. Furthermore, all participants participated in monthly questionnaires. Although a representative sample of the Dutch population was used, willingness to participate monthly in questionnaire studies might influence generalizability. Wider implications of the findings Based on our findings, it will be possible to inform cisgender different-sex, same-sex and transgender parents of the societal reactions they might encounter and counsel them on how to best deal with these reactions. On the ability of the SF-6D to capture the consequences of chronic illnesses on subjective well-being: Evidence from France

Using cross-sectional data from a representative sample of the French population (the 2008 Disability Health survey), this paper examines whether the SF-6D, a widely used preference-based measure of health-related quality of life in economic evaluations, fully captures the variation in subjective well-being (SWB) due to chronic illnesses. We conduct a mediation analysis to disentangle the direct and indirect, through the SF-6D, effects of various chronic conditions on SWB (happiness). Our results show that the SF-6D reflects changes in happiness due to most illnesses except mental illness. Changes in SWB mediated by the SF-6D account for 74% of the total effect. The variation unexplained by the SF-6D is significant and increases substantially in the presence of multimorbidity when a chronic illness is combined with anxiety or depression. Overall, our results suggest that the SF-6D incompletely captures the subjective experience of chronically ill patients, especially those with comorbid conditions.

Interpreting Differences in Questionnaire Scores in the Context of Cultural Location: A Country Case Study of Symptom Check List -90- Revised Data from Albania, Germany and the USA

This paper explores inter-cultural differences using new SCL-90-R data from Albania and referential data from the USA and Germany. The considerable mean score differences are interpreted in terms of historical, cultural, and political factors in Albania may affect psychometric measures creating large intercultural score differences. The SCL-90-R was administered to a representative population sample in Tirana (N = 501). Global, subscale, and item score values from the Albanian sample were compared, where possible, to those from existing American and German samples. The Albanian data showed markedly higher means on the global scale and all subscales than the American and German values and differences at the item level from the German data (item data were not available for the USA). Differences were most marked on subscales of paranoid thinking, anxiety, and hostility. These findings are interpreted in terms of the cultural context of the country. Considerations are given to implications for therapists working with culturally diverse communities. Current mental health and psychotherapy practices do not sufficiently reflect research indicating complex relations between culture and psychopathology. Studies across cultures in new, concurrently collected data using psychometric methods to explore measurement invariance and its violations, are often not feasible. Simpler methods can be used with historical data to show marked differences and enhance intercultural psychotherapy research. The Cumulative Impact of Unmet Essential Needs on Indicators of Attrition: Findings from a Public University Population-Based Sample of Students in the Bronx, NY.

In recent decades, a growing proportion of college students have experienced financial stress, resulting in unmet essential needs including food insecurity, housing instability, lack of healthcare access, and inadequate mental health treatment. Given that urban-based public universities constitute a substantial proportion of the US college student population, understanding how unmet needs affect academic achievement in this population is crucial for developing strategies that alleviate college failure and dropout. We examined the cumulative impact of unmet essential needs (scored from 0 to 4) on indicators of college attrition (dropout, leave of absence, risk of academic probation). The sample comprised a college population-representative sample of 1833 students attending one of three urban public colleges in the Bronx, NY. Employing adjustedmultinomial and binomial logistic regression models, we assessed how total unmet essential needs predict any indicator of college attrition. Each unit increase in unmet need increased the odds of having any attrition indicator by 29% (p < 0.01). Students with two unmet needs had 43% greater odds (p < 0.01), students with three unmet needs had 57% greater odds (p < 0.01), and students with four unmet needs had 82% greater odds (p < 0.01) of having any attrition indicator compared to those without unmet needs. Findings revealed a modest dose-response relationship between the number of unmet needs and the likelihood of experiencing indicators of attrition, suggesting a cumulative impact of unmet needs onstudents' abilityto persist to graduation.Designing interventions aimed at college students with multiple unmet essential needs, and addressing these needs holistically, may assist student retention and graduation.
