Impact of Parental Bonding on Alexithymia and Psychological Distress among Pakistani Adolescents

Aim: This study explored the relationship between parental bonding, alexithymia, and psychological distress among Pakistani adolescents.
 Methods: This was a quantitative research and data was obtained from a sample of 350 adolescents from different school colleges and universities of Pakistan. The cross-sectional research design was used in the current study. Three scales; Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) were used to measure the variables. Pearson- product moment correlation and regression analysis were computed using SPSS version 21.
 Results: The study found a positive relationship between parental bonding (authoritarianism, protectiveness), alexithymia and psychological distress among adolescents.
 Conclusion: Poor parental bonding leads to alexithymia and psychological distress among Pakistani adolescents. This information is steady with the possibility that unfavourable nurturing and over security leads to poor personality traits (alexithymia) and also puts young people in danger for the improvement of psychological distress.
 Recommendations: Future researchers are recommended to incorporate adolescents of broken families to determine the relationship for more appropriate outcomes.

How is smoking distributed in relation to socioeconomic status? Evidence from Brazil in the years 2013 and 2019

The present study aimed to analyze income-related inequality in tobacco consumption in Brazil using data from the National Health Survey at two points in time (2013 and 2019). This study contributes to the growing literature analyzing socioeconomic inequalities in tobacco use by investigating income-related inequalities in the consumption of different tobacco products in Brazil. The inequality measure is the concentration index with an Erreygers correction (EI), and the analysis of its decomposition allows the identification of the factors that determine such inequality. There is inequality in smoking concentrated in the poorest persons, and this pattern also occurs for manufactured cigarettes and roll-your-own cigarettes (RYO), while inequality in smoking cessation is concentrated among the wealthiest. Smoking inequalities were greater in men, older age groups, and RYO. In terms of evolution, the overall results indicated a small decline in smoking inequality. For the decomposition analysis, the results show that the main factors that affect tobacco inequality in terms of concentration in the poorest are education, income, and having private health insurance. The region variable, by contrast, has a positive contribution, since the wealthiest regions have individuals who are more likely to smoke. These results have important implications that serve as a basis for formulating public health policies. For example, greater inequalities for men and older individuals can be targeted by public policies with a special focus on these cases.

Why people hesitate to help: Neural correlates of the counter-dynamics of altruistic helping and individual differences in daily helping tendencies.

Recent psychological and neuroimaging studies on altruism-egoism dilemmas have promoted our understanding of the processes underlying altruistic motivation; however, little attention has been paid to the egoistic counter-dynamics that prompt hesitancy to help. These counter-dynamics may involve the construction of reasons not to help based on contextual elaboration and explain individual differences in the tendency to help others in daily life. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we explored the neural correlates of altruism-egoism dilemmas during empathy-driven helping decisions, with particular attention to the counter-dynamics related to individual helping tendency traits. We used two context-rich helping decision scenarios. In the empathy dilemma (Emp) scenario, empathy-driven motivation to help a poor person was associated with a cost, whereas in the economic-dilemma (Eco) scenario, self-beneficial motivation to help a non-poor person was associated with a cost. Our results showed activation of the right anterior prefrontal cortices, supramarginal gyrus, and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) for the altruism-egoism dilemma (i.e., Emp > Eco). A significant negative effect of the helping tendency trait score was observed on PCC activation; interestingly, this effect was observed for both Emp and Eco dilemmas. The identified neural correlates of altruism-egoism dilemmas appear to be related to the construction of decision reasons based on contextual elaboration in naturalistic situations. In contrast to the classical view, our results suggest a two-stage model that includes an altruistic helping decision followed by counter-dynamics to determine the individual helping tendency.

Person–Environment Fit in Urban Neighbourhoods in Slovenia: Challenges and Coping Strategies

A poor person-environment fit may bring various negative effects to older people's independence and physical and psychological well-being. The presented study is especially valuable as it explores the challenges of living in cities in a country located in central and eastern Europe; namely, a less researched area when it comes to the quality of life of older people dwelling in an urban environment. The research questions that were explored are (1) what environmental pressures have people identified in the urban environment in Slovenia; and (2) what strategies have they used to deal with them? The study is based on 22 interviews with older people and three focus groups, that were then analysed using a thematic analysis approach. The study results identify a number of environmental pressures, which were divided into structural housing pressures, structural neighbourhood pressures, and formal and informal pressures. The analysis shows important behavioural responses, such as strategies of using formal and informal help, moving away from environmental pressures, mobility, actively involved in changing the environment, as well as attitudinal adaptation strategies, such as acceptance, resilience, using distraction, modesty and planning for the future. We further emphasize how these coping strategies are linked to individual and community capabilities, which function as a conversion factor.

Quem é Pobre? Análise das Representações Sociais em uma Amostra Argentina

Abstract Different organizations register alarming poverty rates in Argentina. However, there may be differences in who is considered poor according to these measurements and who is considered poor by society, from common sense knowledge. This work analyzes the social representations of people living in poverty in a sample of 605 Argentines, using the free-word association technique. The results suggest that the poor person is first understood as someone who suffers from hunger, a definition that corresponds to indigence according to the official entity that measures poverty and indigence in Argentina. However, while the core of the representation manifests a significant presence of elements of monetary poverty and its effects on nutrition (hunger), the peripheral system shows the deficit in various social rights, such as education, housing, work, and health. Following these results, it is argued that equating poverty with indigence would render the situation of millions of people in Argentina invisible.

Determinants of Suicide Behavior among the Mentally Ill in a Tertiary Hospital in South-South Nigeria

Background: Suicide has been recognized as one of the commonest causes of death globally and mental disorders have been found to contribute about 70% to 80% of causes of suicide. A number of factors can predict or increase the risk of suicide among those who have mental illnesses. Aim: This study aimed to look at the factors influencing suicide behavior among mentally ill patients at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among attendees of Neuropsychiatric Outpatient Clinic of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. A structured questionnaire covering socio-demographic characteristics and other factors were self-administered to 75 patients diagnosed with various psychiatric disorders by consultants Psychiatrists and attending the out-patient clinic via a systematic random sampling. Ethical approval was obtained from the ethical committee of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and all other ethical provisions were followed. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. p value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Majority of the respondents were male (81%), single (76.0%), unemployed (36.0%), low income earners (73.4%) and between the ages of 21 and 30 (44%). Majority had tertiary education (58.7%) followed by respondents with secondary education (33.3%). Those who were dissatisfied with life due to mental illness constituted 34.9% while those who were dissatisfied with living were 22.5%. Nineteen (25.3%) of the respondents has had suicidal thoughts while 7(9.3%) had attempted suicide. Major determinant of the suicide behavior were stigmatization from mental illness, advice childhood experience, job loss, substance abuse, history of assault and poor premorbid personality. There was a statistically significant association between suicidal behavior and stigma as well as childhood or family history (χ2 = 3.828, p = 0.05; χ2 = 6.334, p = 0.042), but association between suicidal behavior and drug use, sexual assaults, job loss and query respectively was not statistically significant (χ2 = 0.456, p = 0.5; χ2 = 3.111, p = 0.078; χ2 = 6.921, p = 0.009; χ2 = 0.009, p = 0.922). Conclusion: Suicide behavior was common among those with mental illness and unemployment, substance abuse, male gender, higher level of education, stigmatization, poor premorbid history, adverse childhood experience are among the factors that could affect suicide behavior. Association exits between suicide behavior and drug use, stigma, childhood or family history, sexual assaults, job loss, and query etc. It is, therefore, important to provide adequate attention and care to the mentally ill to help reduce the prevalence of suicidal behavior among them.

Various studies have explored the relationship between visual impairment and poverty. This study aims to enrich understanding on the relationship between poverty and visual disability in the Indonesian context. This study uses data from Wave 5 of the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS), focused on individuals aged 25 and above in 2014. The method used in this study consists of descriptive analysis and logistic regression. This study found that there is no relationship between poverty and visual impairment. The empirical result shows that people who experienced visual disability tend to have a lower probability of being poor in 2014 compared to people without visual disability. Poor persons also have lower probability to be visually disabled in 2014. This finding tends to be slightly different from previous research which showed the bidirectional relationship between poverty and visual disability. This difference might be due to the indicator of visual disability used in this study. Based on the IFLS data, people with visual disability come from a non-poor family so that they were able to perform medical check up, including eye health check. The results of this study indicate that a person with visual disability is capable of performing various activities, including productive activities. They are also able to work and create income. Thus, there is the possibility that they do not experience severe visual disability

Not Eight, But Four: Muhammad Syahrūr’s Reconstruction of Mustaḥiq Zakah’s Classification

This article analyzes Muhammad Syahrūr’s thoughts on the mustaḥiq zakah (zakat recipient) classification based on his interpretation of Qur’anic verse QS. al-Taubah [9]: 60. Syahrūr’s perspective is unique because it challenges the classification of mustaḥiq zakah that Islamic jurists have widely accepted. The article uses a literature review with a Gadamer hermeneutic approach. Data was collected through text studies and analyzed using descriptive-analytical techniques. The study found that Syahrūr classified mustaḥiq zakah into four categories: fakīr (poor person), miskīn (needy person), ghārim (the debtor), and ibn sabīl (wayfarer). Using a scientific-historical approach, Syahrūr expanded the meaning of fakīr to include orphans, miskīn to include people with special needs, ghārim to include debts for paying diyah (blood money) for wrongful killing (al-qatl al-khaṭa’), and ibn sabīl, which refers to travelers. Syahrūr’s interpretation of QS. al-Taubah [9]: 60 is a product of his scientific-historical approach, which he developed while in Moscow under the influence of the prevailing logic of the time (episteme), the structuralism of Russian formalism, and his linguistic teacher, Ja’far Dak al-Bāb. Syahrūr’s approach required him to observe the contemporary object’s condition in understanding QS. al-Taubah [9]: 60. The poor conditions in Syria, both internal and external factors, influenced Syahrūr’s interpretation of QS. al-Taubah [9]: 60.

A Study on Impact of Microfinance Institutions on Socio Economic Development of Saurashtran Women

Background: Microfinance in the global context is commonly referred to programmes meant for providing credit for self-employment and other financial and business services to poor persons. It is as same as extension of small loans to very poor for self-employment projects that generate income, allowing them to care for themselves and their families. Aim: The objective of the study is to analyze the present status of management of micro finance in Saurashtra and it is relation to impact of micro finance among women SHGs in the study area. Method: In the present study, both exploratory research and descriptive research have been used in accomplishing the objectives of the study. The researcher visited the various blocks on different dates and collected data from different self help groups. To analyze the primary data statistical tools such as Descriptive Analysis, Chi-square test, ANOVA, Garret ranking technique, Discriminate Function Analysis, Friedman Test Factor Analysis, Kendall's coefficient of concordance test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Neural network and Structural Equation Modeling have been used. Findings: The study conclude that a ailment of Microfinance loan from microfinance institutions is helpful in empowering women economically, socio-culturally and politically. The study also found that the beneficiaries have reasonable employment, increase in income and participation in household financial decision-making as compared to non-beneficiaries.

Near-real-time CO2 fluxes from CarbonTracker Europe for high-resolution atmospheric modeling

Abstract. We present the CarbonTracker Europe High-Resolution (CTE-HR) system that estimates carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange over Europe at high resolution (0.1 × 0.2∘) and in near real time (about 2 months' latency). It includes a dynamic anthropogenic emission model, which uses easily available statistics on economic activity, energy use, and weather to generate anthropogenic emissions with dynamic time profiles at high spatial and temporal resolution (0.1×0.2∘, hourly). Hourly net ecosystem productivity (NEP) calculated by the Simple Biosphere model Version 4 (SiB4) is driven by meteorology from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5th Generation (ERA5) dataset. This NEP is downscaled to 0.1×0.2∘ using the high-resolution Coordination of Information on the Environment (CORINE) land-cover map and combined with the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) fire emissions to create terrestrial carbon fluxes. Ocean CO2 fluxes are included in our product, based on Jena CarboScope ocean CO2 fluxes, which are downscaled using wind speed and temperature. Jointly, these flux estimates enable modeling of atmospheric CO2 mole fractions over Europe. We assess the skill of the CTE-HR CO2 fluxes (a) to reproduce observed anomalies in biospheric fluxes and atmospheric CO2 mole fractions during the 2018 European drought, (b) to capture the reduction of anthropogenic emissions due to COVID-19 lockdowns, (c) to match mole fraction observations at Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) sites across Europe after atmospheric transport with the Transport Model, version 5 (TM5) and the Stochastic Time-Inverted Lagrangian Transport (STILT), driven by ECMWF-IFS, and (d) to capture the magnitude and variability of measured CO2 fluxes in the city center of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). We show that CTE-HR fluxes reproduce large-scale flux anomalies reported in previous studies for both biospheric fluxes (drought of 2018) and anthropogenic emissions (COVID-19 pandemic in 2020). After applying transport of emitted CO2, the CTE-HR fluxes have lower median root mean square errors (RMSEs) relative to mole fraction observations than fluxes from a non-informed flux estimate, in which biosphere fluxes are scaled to match the global growth rate of CO2 (poor person's inversion). RMSEs are close to those of the reanalysis with the CTE data assimilation system. This is encouraging given that CTE-HR fluxes did not profit from the weekly assimilation of CO2 observations as in CTE. We furthermore compare CO2 concentration observations at the Dutch Lutjewad coastal tower with high-resolution STILT transport to show that the high-resolution fluxes manifest variability due to different emission sectors in summer and winter. Interestingly, in periods where synoptic-scale transport variability dominates CO2 concentration variations, the CTE-HR fluxes perform similarly to low-resolution fluxes (5–10× coarsened). The remaining 10 % of the simulated CO2 mole fraction differs by >2 ppm between the low-resolution and high-resolution flux representation and is clearly associated with coherent structures (“plumes”) originating from emission hotspots such as power plants. We therefore note that the added resolution of our product will matter most for very specific locations and times when used for atmospheric CO2 modeling. Finally, in a densely populated region like the Amsterdam city center, our modeled fluxes underestimate the magnitude of measured eddy covariance fluxes but capture their substantial diurnal variations in summertime and wintertime well. We conclude that our product is a promising tool for modeling the European carbon budget at a high resolution in near real time. The fluxes are freely available from the ICOS Carbon Portal (CC-BY-4.0) to be used for near-real-time monitoring and modeling, for example, as an a priori flux product in a CO2 data assimilation system. FOOD INSECURITY AMONG LOW-INCOME OLDER PERSONS IN HONG KONG: THE ROLE OF PUBLIC ASSISTANCE, SOCIAL SERVICES, AND SOCIAL CAPITAL

Food is one of the physiological needs that have an immediate impact on healthy aging. However, the persistent poverty problem in Hong Kong has increasingly made it difficult for low-income older persons to meet their basic needs. This paper examines to what extent poor older persons suffer from food insecurity and how their food insecurity is related to the different types of resources they have. Based on the data collected through a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews, the study found that about 20% of low-income older persons experienced food insecurity, and male, older seniors, and those in a larger household with lower socio-economic status were particularly vulnerable. Among the resources that older people can utilize, public assistance and social services were found to be more conducive to food security than social capital. The implementation of a food voucher scheme and the facilitation of food distribution and social eating are suggested.

Poverty in the Yakut Arctic — the experience of sociological research

The article is devoted to one of the main topics of sociology and economics — poverty and the problems of its measurement. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that at each new stage of the development of society, the sets of consumer goods, the thresholds for the consumption of the population are changing, therefore adequate criteria for the analysis of poverty are required. The article examines the evolution of the views on poverty of domestic and foreign scientists, focusing on new factors of income stratification: territorial factor, factor of social inclusion, spatial configuration of inequality. At the empirical level, the results of monitoring, which was conducted for several years in 13 Arctic regions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), are analyzed. The purpose of this study is to create a profile of a poor person in the Arctic (Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)) based on the results of the project “Man in the Arctic” (conducted by the Center for Strategic Studies under the Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)) and a number of studies conducted at the North-Eastern Federal University named after M.K.Ammosov and to study the determinants and correlates of poverty at the micro level. Accordingly, the subject of the study is the region of the Arctic zone of Russia, in particular, 13 districts that are part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The subject of the study is the profile of a poor person in the Arctic, the main characteristics of social inequality in the Arctic zone of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Based on analysis of statistical data, the results of sociological research, mathematical and statistical analysis of primary data, a generalized, enlarged portrait of a poor man in the Arctic was compiled. An Analysis of the Online Final Examination Items in the Mathematics Course Using the Rasch Measurement Model

<p><strong>Abstract</strong>. The National Examination in Indonesia has been abolished since 2020. Hence, the Indonesian Junior High School (SMP) makes its final examination items for the 9<sup>th</sup>-grade, and from the results, the school determines success in the course. The final examination has an important role and significant value in making decisions about students' graduation. Therefore, this study is aimed to analyze the Online Final Examination items in one of the public junior high schools in Bandung. The sample was 234 students in grade 9 using their mathematics examination tests, comprising 20 multiple-choice items with 4 options (A-D), while the data processing used Winsteps software with the Rasch modeling technique. Subsequently, the Rasch model results showed an acceptable people separation statistic of 1.54 and poor person reliability at 0.7<0.8. The item separation statistics was in a good category at 2.21, while the reliability at 0.83 was excellent. Although 4 online final examination items were in the fit category, 16 were good and capable of dividing students according to their abilities. They also provided very detailed data about the quality of the items and the ability of each grade 9 student. Since each test item is included in the fit category, this study contributes information on preparing and analyzing the Online Final Examination to teachers.</p>

Short and Long-term Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic on Health Equity: A Comprehensive Review.

Background: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on human life has led to profound consequences in almost all societies worldwide, and this includes its significant impact on all aspects of health. Health equity has been among the main challenges in any healthcare system. However, with the COVID-19 crisis worsening health inequalities, the need to prioritize health equity in upstream national and international plans must receive scholarly attention. Therefore, this paper reports the findings of a review of the current synthesized evidence about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health equity. Methods: This is a comprehensive review in which we retrieved relevant studies during the period starting from 12/01/2019 to 01/15/2021 are retrieved from various databases. The PRISMA flow diagram and a narrative approach are used for synthesizing the evidence. Results: We initially retrieved 1173 studies, and after a primary quality appraisal process, 40 studies entered the final phase of analysis. The included studies were categorized into five main outcome variables: Accessibility (95%), Utilization (65.8%), Financial protection: 15 (36.5%), Poverty (31.7%), and Racism (21.9%) Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic has been the most devastating global challenge in recent history. While the COVID-19 crisis is still unfolding, its multidimensional adverse effects are yet to be revealed. Nevertheless, some people, e.g., the elderly, minorities, as well as marginalized and poor persons, have suffered the COVID-19 consequences more than others. In line with the whole government/whole society approach, we advocate that governments need to strengthen their special efforts to reduce the extra burden of the pandemic on the most vulnerable populations.
