ANALISA KARAKTERISTIK KEUNGGULAN ETHANOL SEBAGAI SUMBER ENERGI ALTERNATIF PADA SEKTOR TRANSPORTASI

As the energy consumption continues to increase, while, the most of the energy consumption is met from oil, and the oil supply is going to limited; energy diversification is needed. Ethanol can be used as an option for the energy diversification. Ethanol is a renewable energy and environmentally friendly fuel which used as an energy alternative in the transportation sector can reduce the gasoline consumption. As gasoline is one of subsidized fuels and imported fuel, reducing gasoline consumption has also impact on reducing oil subsidy and import. As the ethanol has lower greenhouse gas of CO2, and pollutant emissions of CO, NOx, SO2, and particulate matters, ethanol utilization for energy is safe for human health and environment. Ethanol also has higher octane number and oxygen content that lead to better performance of the fuel and vehicle. Ethanol fuel program is also more creating job opportunities.

Development of high intensity low emission combustor for achieving flameless combustion of liquid fuels

This paper presents the experimental and numerical results for a two stage combustor capable of achieving flameless combustion with liquid fuels for different thermal heat inputs of 20, 30, 40 and 60kW and heat release density of 5–15MW/m3. Combustion characteristics and pollutant emissions are studied for three different fuels, kerosene, diesel and gasoline. The influence of droplet diameter on pollutant emissions at all conditions is studied. The fuel and oxidizer are supplied at ambient conditions. The concept of high swirl flows has been adopted to achieve high internal recirculation rates, residence time and increased dilution of the fresh reactants in the primary combustion zone, resulting in flameless combustion mode. Air is injected through four tangential injection ports located near the bottom of the combustor and liquid fuel is injected through a centrally mounted pressure swirl injector. Computational analysis of the flow features shows that decrease in the exit port diameter of the primary chamber increases the recirculation rate of combustion products and helps in achieving the flameless combustion mode. Based on preliminary computational studies, a 30mm primary chamber exit port diameter is chosen for experimental studies. Detailed experimental investigations show that flameless combustion mode was achieved with evenly distributed combustion reaction zone and uniform temperature distribution in the combustor. Pollutant emissions of CO, NOx, CxHy are measured and compared for all operating conditions of different fuels and different thermal inputs. The acoustic emission levels are reduced by 6–8dB as combustion mode shifts from conventional mode to flameless combustion mode.

Pollutant emission and noise radiation from open and impinging inverse diffusion flames

This paper reports an experimental investigation of the pollutant emission and noise radiation characteristics of both open and impinging inverse diffusion flames (IDFs), produced by five burners of different air port diameter ( d air = 5, 6 and 6.84 mm) and air-to-fuel spacing ( S = 8, 11.5 and 15 mm). The effects of d air, S, overall equivalence ratio Ф and nozzle-to-plate spacing H on the pollutant emissions of CO and NO x and the noise radiation are examined. The results show that at fixed air flow rate, a smaller d air curtails NO x emission but augments noise radiation, indicative of a role played by turbulence, which tends to decrease pollutant emission and increase noise radiation. A larger S reduces NO x emission but increases noise radiation, indicating that different flame zones may be responsible for pollutant emission and noise radiation. When the IDF is under stoichiometric Ф = 1.6, both the NO x emission and noise radiation are highest, as a result of maximum heat release rate. A comparison of EINO x for the open and impinging IDFs shows that the impinging IDFs emit more NO x probably due to the absence of NO reburning. The impinging IDFs have higher noise radiation than the corresponding open IDFs. A higher level of noise radiation from the impinging IDFs is observed as the target plate is brought closer to the burner.

A multi-objective design optimization strategy as applied to pre-mixed pre-vaporized injection systems for low emission combustors

This paper presents a multi-objective optimization procedure as applied to the design of the injection system of a Lean Pre-mixed Pre-vaporized combustion chamber. The optimizer drives an Artificial Neural Network in a repeated analysis scheme in order to simultaneously reduce NOX and CO pollutant emissions. The ANN is trained with a few three-dimensional high resolution reactive viscous flow simulations, carried out with a reliable and robust CFD code. Results, obtained in a four-dimensional state space, demonstrate the validity of the overall procedure with truly moderate computational costs.

Comprehensive study of biodiesel fuel for HSDI engines in conventional and low temperature combustion conditions

In this research, an experimental investigation has been performed to give insight into the potential of biodiesel as an alternative fuel for High Speed Direct Injection (HSDI) diesel engines. The scope of this work has been broadened by comparing the combustion characteristics of diesel and biodiesel fuels in a wide range of engine loads and EGR conditions, including the high EGR rates expected for future diesel engines operating in the low temperature combustion (LTC) regime. The experimental work has been carried out in a single-cylinder engine running alternatively with diesel and biodiesel fuels. Conventional diesel fuel and neat biodiesel have been compared in terms of their combustion performance through a new methodology designed for isolating the actual effects of each fuel on diesel combustion, aside from their intrinsic differences in chemical composition. The analysis of the results has been sequentially divided into two progressive and complementary steps. Initially, the overall combustion performance of each fuel has been critically evaluated based on a set of parameters used as tracers of the combustion quality, such as the combustion duration or the indicated efficiency. With the knowledge obtained from this previous overview, the analysis focuses on the detailed influence of biodiesel on the different diesel combustion stages known ignition delay, premixed combustion and mixing controlled combustion, considering also the impact on CO and UHC pollutant emissions. The results of this research explain why the biodiesel fuel accelerates the diesel combustion process in all engine loads and EGR rates, even in those corresponding with LTC conditions, increasing its possibilities as alternative fuel for future DI diesel engines.

Photodiode-based sensor for flame sensing and combustion-process monitoring

A nonintrusive low-cost sensor based on silicon photodiode detectors has been designed to analyze the formation and behavior of excited CH(*) and C(2)(*) radicals in the combustion process by sensing the spectral emission of hydrocarbon flames. The sensor was validated by performing two sets of experiments for both nonconfined and confined flames. For a nonconfined oil flame, the sensor responses for the axial intensity were highly correlated with the measurements obtained with a radiometer. For confined gas flames the ratio between the signal corresponding to C(2)(*) and CH(*) was successfully correlated with the CO pollutant emissions and the combustion efficiency. These results give additional insight on how to prevent an incomplete combustion using spectral information. The fast response, the nonintrusive character, and the instantaneous measurement of the needed spectral information makes the proposed optical sensor a key element in the development of advanced control strategies for combustion processes.

SFGP 2007 - Natural Gas/Hydrogen Mixture Combustion in a Porous Radiant Burner

Within the context of reducing the green house gas emissions, substituting hydrogen for natural gas could have a great environmental impact, but hydrogen has different combustion characteristics than natural gas. This paper reports results of experimental tests of premixed combustion of natural gas-hydrogen mixtures in a porous burner made of open cell metallic foam. The technology of porous radiant burners shows environmental and economical advantages compared to traditional diffusion flame burners. The tests showed that substituting natural gas for hydrogen in a porous burner reduces the pollutant emissions of CO and NOx and the quantity of CO2 produced. For specific powers below 500 kW/m2, the emissions were below the "Blue Angel" label values. But working conditions are limited by hydrogen addition and the equivalence ratio has to be lowered to prevent flashback. The radiant combustion mode is more difficult to obtain with mixtures containing hydrogen and it disappears completely for mixtures with more than 80% vol. hydrogen.
