Biodiversity and Foraging Behaviour of Major Insect Pollinators on Some Fruit Crops

Beekeeping entirely depends on the types of flowering plants available in any given area. The honey bees (Apis species) have a major role and are considered widely as pollinating agents. The present study was conducted at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar to find out the biodiversity and foraging behaviour of major insect pollinators on some fruit crops. Staminal hairs increase pollinator attraction and pollination accuracy in Tradescantia fluminensis (Commelinaceae).

Staminal hairs are the particular appendages of stamens, which may affect pollinator foraging behaviour and pollen transfer. However, experimental evidence of the functions of staminal hairs in pollination remains scarce. Here, we conducted staminal hair manipulation experiments in Tradescantia fluminensis (Commelinaceae) to investigate their effects on visitation and pollen transfer by bees. Our observations revealed that both visitation rates and visit duration of honeybees (Apis cerana) to control flowers were significantly higher than that of hairless flowers. Moreover, removing the staminal hairs significantly decreased pollen deposition by honeybees (A. cerana), but did not affect pollen removal. The staminal hair was similar in length to the stamen and the pistil of T. fluminensis. The staminal hairs provide more footholds for honeybees, and they lay prone on the staminal hairs to collect pollen, which increased the accuracy of pollination through the consistent pollen placement and pick-up on the ventral surface of honeybees. These results showed that the staminal hairs in T. fluminensis may represent an adaptation to attract pollinators and enhance pollination accuracy.

Pollinator-mediated plant coexistence requires high levels of pollinator specialization.

In pollen-limited plant communities, the foraging behavior of pollinators might mediate coexistence and competitive exclusion of plant species by determining which plants receive conspecific pollen. A key question is whether realistic pollinator foraging behavior promotes coexistence or exclusion of plant species. We use a simulation model to understand how pollinator foraging behavior impacts the coexistence dynamics of pollen-limited plants. To determine whether pollinators are likely to provide a biologically important coexistence mechanism, we compare our results to bee foraging data from the literature and from a novel experimental analysis. Model results indicate that strong specialization at the level of individual foraging paths is required to promote coexistence. However, few empirical studies have robustly quantified within-bout specialization. Species-level data suggest that foraging behavior is sufficient to permit pollinator-mediated coexistence in species-poor plant communities and possibly in diverse communities where congeneric plants co-occur. Our experiments using bumblebees show that individual-level specialization does exist, but not at levels sufficient to substantially impact coexistence dynamics. The literature on specialization within natural foraging paths suffers from key limitations, but overall suggests that pollinator-mediated coexistence should be rare in diverse plant communities.

Nutrient enrichment and rainfall affect plant phenology and floral resource availability for pollinators

Wild pollinators are critical to maintaining ecosystem services and facilitating crop production, but habitat degradation and resource loss are leading to worldwide pollinator declines. Nutrient enrichment and changes in rainfall due to global warming are drivers of global environmental change, and likely to impact pollinator foraging behavior and reproductive success through changes to the growth and phenology of flowering plants. Here, we provide a short review of pollinator conservation in the context of nutritional ecology and plant-pollinator interactions. Then, we present novel research into the effects of nutrient and rainfall variation on plant phenology. In this study, we experimentally manipulated the amount of water and supplemental nutrients available to wild sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and goldenrod (Solidago spp.) throughout their growing season. We evaluated how changes in growth and bloom time could impact resource availability for bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) queens preparing to overwinter. We found that fertilizer and rainfall alter plant bloom time by 2–18 days, though flowering response was species-specific. Fertilizer did not significantly affect plant growth or number of flowers produced when plants were grown under drought conditions. When water was not limiting, fertilized sunflowers bloomed in floral pulses. These findings carry important implications for growers and land managers, providing insight into potential drivers of wild pollinator decline and possible conservation strategies.

Effect of selenium accumulation on foraging behavior of pollinators and seed yield in Trifolium alexandrinum L.

Selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient for both plants and animals and is usually provided as a supplement to livestock. Se bioaccumulation promotes plant growth by enhancing the accumulation of organic solutes and the activation of antioxidant system. In animals, the Se supplements reduce the chances of mastitis and white muscle disease, and improve the immunity, health, and reproduction, particularly in lactating dairy cows. Therefore, the enrichment or biofortification of fodder crops with Se may improve the nutritional quality of forages and thereby reduce malnutrition in cattle. However, Se hyper-accumulation in plants or plant parts can cause direct toxic effects on insects especially bees. Berseem is a highly cross-pollinated fodder crop that attracts a large number of pollinators. However, little or no reports are available regarding the effects of Se biofortification on the foraging behavior of pollinators in berseem. Therefore, the current study was planned to evaluate the effect of exogenous application of Se on the foraging behavior of native pollinators visiting the berseem crop. Five different doses of Se were applied to evaluate its effect on abundance, foraging behavior (visit duration and visitation rate), and single-visit efficacy of native pollinators that may affect berseem seed yield. Our results showed maximum abundance of pollinators in plants supplemented with low Se level, i.e., 5gha-1 while the minimum abundance was observed at high Se doses (15 and 20gha-1). Also, the seed yield attributes, i.e., the number of seeds per head, seed weight per head, 1000 seed weight, were the highest in plants treated with a low dose of Se, whereas the seed yield of berseem decreased with an increase in Se concentrations. Hence, our study provides evidence that high doses of Se negatively affect the foraging behavior of pollinators (visitation rate and visit duration) in plants. We conclude that the application of moderate Se dose positively influences the pollination ecology of berseem, consequently improving seed yield. HIGHLIGHTS: Selenium (Se) is essential for animals and beneficial for plants and may become toxic at high level. Se is delivered to the environment due to agriculture. Se toxicity affected berseem growth and considerably reduced the seed yield. High dose of Se reduced the abundance of pollinators and negatively affected their foraging behavior.

Intercrops as foraging habitats for bees: Bees do not prefer sole legume crops over legume-cereal mixtures

Enhancing crop diversity is an option to make agriculture more sustainable and biodiversity friendly. Intercropping grain legumes together with cereals leads to higher crop diversity and has a broad range of agronomic and ecological benefits. However, sole crop stands of grain legumes might be richer in floral resources than grain legume-cereal intercrops and thus are probably more useful to mitigate the lack of flower resources in agricultural landscapes, which is a main driver of pollinator decline. Yet, little is known about differences between both cropping systems and different legume genotypes in terms of attractiveness for pollinators and how these differences moderate the pollinators’ foraging behavior and consequences for grain legume yields. In a field trial, we analyzed the abundance of flower visiting insects, the foraging behavior of pollinators and related effects on grain yield per plant across six different faba bean genotypes (Vicia faba L.) grown as sole crops or as intercrops with wheat. As foraging behaviors, we considered legal flower visits (i.e. frontal visits) and illegal flower visits (i.e. nectar robbing through bite holes). We recorded characteristics of V. faba genotypes on crop stand level (V. faba plant height, number of V. faba inflorescences and leaf area index (LAI)). V. faba-wheat intercrops and sole crop stands of V. faba were equally attractive foraging habitats for pollinators, implying that intercrops are as suitable as sole crops to mitigate the lack of floral resources. Yield per V. faba plant was positively affected by bee pollination, with this effect being determined by the number of illegal flower visits, suggesting that this foraging strategy does not adversely affect V. faba yields and even has a positive effect. Intercrops had higher yields per V. faba plant than sole crop stands of V. faba, indicating agronomic advantages of this farming practice. Although V. faba genotypes differed in their plant traits, these differences could not explain shifts in the number of flower visiting insects. However, illegal flower visits increased with a higher number of inflorescences whereas the number of legal flower visits declined. Based on our small-scale experiment, we conclude that the use of V. faba-wheat intercrops brings agronomic benefits while serving as a foraging habitat for pollinators that proved to be as attractive as sole crop stands of V. faba.

Co-Flowering Plant Densities Affect Bee Visitation to a Focal Plant Species, but Bee Genera Differ in Their Response

The relative densities of co-flowering plant species can affect pollinator foraging behavior, i.e., bee choice of which plants to visit in a foraging path. Because animal-pollinated plants depend on sequential pollinator visits to conspecifics for successful reproduction, understanding the relationship between relative densities of co-flowering plants and bee visits within a foraging path is necessary to determine whether co-flowering species facilitate or compete for bee visitation. We examined the role of relative co-flowering plant species densities in determining bee visits to two focal plant species (Astragalus scaphoides and Penstemon albertinus) within foraging paths by following individual bees in natural multispecies co-flowering plant communities. We found that conspecific and heterospecific plant density influenced the proportion of visits to the focal plant species during foraging bouts, but effects of density differed among bee groups. Considering all bees, Lupinus spp. facilitated visits to A. scaphoides while Castilleja spp. competed with A. scaphoides for visits. When three bee groups, Bombus, Anthophora/Eucera, and “small bees,” were modeled separately, Bombus consistently visited A. scaphoides more than expected regardless of its density and P. albertinus less than expected at intermediate densities. Anthophora/Eucera exhibited a nonlinear response to A. scaphoides floral density but visited P. albertinus in direct proportion to its density. “Small bees” visited both plants in direct proportion to their densities. Our results highlight that bee groups should be treated separately in models of pollinator visitation behavior, and that the composition and density of the co-flowering plant community may impact reproductive success of focal plant species.

Individual‐based plant–pollinator networks are structured by phenotypic and microsite plant traits

Abstract The biotic and abiotic context of individual plants within animal‐pollinated plant populations can influence pollinator foraging behaviour. Pollinator movements regulate pollen flow among plant individuals, and ultimately determine individual plant reproductive success. Yet the underlying drivers of this context dependency of interactions at the population level and their functional consequences for individuals remain poorly known. Here we used a well‐characterised population of Halimium halimifolium (Cistaceae), a Mediterranean shrub species, in combination with exponential random graph models (ERGMs) to evaluate how the intrapopulation variation in plant attributes configures individual‐based plant–pollinator networks and determines their reproductive outcomes. Specifically, we assessed (a) how the intrinsic (i.e. phenotype and phenology) and extrinsic (i.e. microsite) plant attributes influenced the emerging configuration of the bipartite plant–pollinator network and the unipartite plant–plant network derived from pollinator sharing, and (b) how these plant attributes combined with the network topological position of individual plants affect their female fitness, measured as the total seed weight per plant. We found that both intrinsic and extrinsic plant attributes contributed substantially to explain the configuration of both the bipartite and the unipartite pollination network. Besides the effects of plant attributes, the functional group to which pollinator species belonged was also important to determine the variance in plant–pollinator interaction odds, while the probability of plants to share more pollinator species was additionally influenced by the spatial distance between those plants. Furthermore, our results showed that these influences of plant attributes on network structure can be translated into functional outcomes at the plant individual level, with direct consequences for intrapopulation fitness variation. Synthesis. This study builds towards a better understanding of the multiple drivers underlying the context dependency of plant–pollinator interactions and how they mediate the reproductive outputs of individual plants within a population. The application of our analytical framework allows a conceptual shift from descriptive to predictive research on the evolutionary and ecological processes that give rise to complex ecological networks at the population level.

Gene flow in commercial alfalfa (Medicago sativa subsp. sativa L.) seed production fields: Distance is the primary but not the sole influence on adventitious presence.

In insect-pollinated crops, gene flow is affected by numerous factors including crop characteristics, mating system, life history, pollinators, and planting management practices. Previous studies have concentrated on the impact of distance between genetically engineered (GE) and conventional fields on adventitious presence (AP) which represents the unwanted presence of a GE gene. Variables other than distance, however, may affect AP. In addition, some AP is often present in the parent seed lots used to establish conventional fields. To identify variables that influence the proportion of AP in conventional alfalfa fields, we performed variable selection regression analyses. Analyses based on a sample-level and a field-level analysis gave similar, though not identical results. For the sample-level model, distance from the GE field explained 66% of the variance in AP, confirming its importance in affecting AP. The area of GE fields within the pollinator foraging range explained an additional 30% of the variation in AP in the model. The density of alfalfa leafcutting bee domiciles influenced AP in both models. To minimize AP in conventional alfalfa seed fields, management practices should focus on optimizing isolation distances while also considering the size of the GE pollen pool within the pollinator foraging range, and the foraging behavior of pollinators.

Understanding pollinator foraging behaviour and transition rates between flowers is important to maximize seed set in hybrid crops

Hybrid cauliflower production predominately relies on pollen transfer from hermaphrodite to female lines by honeybees. However, the presence of other pollinators may impact pollination success. Here, we investigate how honeybee visitation frequency and behaviour vary with plant sex and presence of blowflies and affect seed and pod set. We found substantial pollen limitation when honeybees were alone. This was likely due to their higher visitation to hermaphrodite flowers, infrequent transition from hermaphrodite to female flowers and high nectar theft in female flowers. Pollen foragers fed on nectar on hermaphrodite, but not female flowers. Moreover, when blowflies were present, the seed set was lower than that with honeybees alone. Our study highlights the importance of understanding the plant mating system and pollinator foraging behaviour with and without other species present in order to maximize seed set in hybrid crops.

Edge effects and mating patterns in a bumblebee-pollinated plant.

Researchers have long assumed that plant spatial location influences plant reproductive success and pollinator foraging behaviour. For example, many flowering plant populations have small, linear or irregular shapes that increase the proportion of plants on the edge, which may reduce mating opportunities through both male and female function. Additionally, plants that rely on pollinators may be particularly vulnerable to edge effects if those pollinators exhibit restricted foraging and pollen carryover is limited. To explore the effects of spatial location (edge vs. interior) on siring success, seed production, pollinator foraging patterns and pollen-mediated gene dispersal, we established a square experimental array of 49 Mimulus ringens (monkeyflower) plants. We observed foraging patterns of pollinating bumblebees and used paternity analysis to quantify male and female reproductive success and mate diversity for plants on the edge versus interior. We found no significant differences between edge and interior plants in the number of seeds sired, mothered or the number of sires per fruit. However, we found strong differences in pollinator behaviour based on plant location, including 15 % lower per flower visitation rates and substantially longer interplant moves for edge plants. This translated into 40 % greater pollen-mediated gene dispersal for edge than for interior plants. Overall, our results suggest that edge effects are not as strong as is commonly assumed, and that different plant reproduction parameters respond to spatial location independently.

Are Reproductive Traits Related to Pollen Limitation in Plants? A Case Study from a Central European Meadow.

The deficiency of pollen grains for ovule fertilization can be the main factor limiting plant reproduction and fitness. Because of the ongoing global changes, such as biodiversity loss and landscape fragmentation, a better knowledge of the prevalence and predictability of pollen limitation is challenging within current ecological research. In our study we used pollen supplementation to evaluate pollen limitation (at the level of seed number and weight) in 22 plant species growing in a wet semi-natural meadow. We investigated the correlation between the pollen limitation index (PL) and floral traits associated with plant reproduction or pollinator foraging behavior. We recorded significant pollen limitation for approximately 41% of species (9 out of 22 surveyed). Seven species had a significant positive response in seed production and two species increased in seed weight after pollen supplementation. Considering traits, PL significantly decreased with the number of pollinator functional groups. The relationship of PL with other examined traits was not supported by our results. The causes of pollen limitation may vary among species with regard to (1) different reproductive strategies and life history, and/or (2) temporary changes in influence of biotic and abiotic factors at a site.

Pollen Release Dynamics and Daily Patterns of Pollen-Collecting Activity of Honeybee Apis mellifera and Bumblebee Bombus lantschouensis in Solar Greenhouse.

Pollen is important not only for pollination and fertilization of plants, but also for colony development of bee pollinators. Anther dehiscence determines the available pollen that can be collected by foragers. In China, honeybees and bumblebees are widely used as pollinators in solar greenhouse agriculture. To better understand the effect of solar greenhouse microclimates on pollen release and pollen-foraging behaviour, we observed the anther dehiscence dynamics and daily pollen-collecting activity of Apis mellifera and Bombus lantschouensis during peach anthesis in a solar greenhouse in Beijing. Microclimate factors had a significant effect on anther dehiscence and bee foraging behaviour. The proportion of dehisced anthers increased with increasing temperature and decreasing relative humidity and peaked from 11:00 h to 14:00 h, coinciding with the peak pollen-collecting activity of bees. On sunny days, most pollen grains were collected by the two pollinators within two hours after anther dehiscence, at which time the viability of pollen had not yet significantly decreased. Our study helps us to better understand the relationship between food resources and pollinator foraging behaviour and to make better use of bees for pollination in Chinese solar greenhouses.

Do local conspecific density and floral display size influence fruit set via pollinator visitation in Orchis militaris?

Plant density varies naturally, from isolated plants to clumped individuals, and this can influence pollinator foraging behaviour and plant reproductive success. In addition, the effect of conspecific density on reproduction may depend on the pollination system, and deceptive species differ from rewarding ones in this regard, a high density being often associated with low fruit set in deceptive plants. In our study, we aimed to determine how local conspecific density and floral display size (i.e. number of flowers per plant) affect fruit set in a deceptive orchid (Orchis militaris) through changes in pollinator visitation. We measured fruit set in a natural population and recorded pollinator abundance and foraging behaviour within plots of different O. militaris densities. Detailed data were recorded for the most abundant potential pollinators of O. militaris, i.e. solitary bees. Floral display size was negatively correlated to fruit set in medium‐density plots, but uncorrelated in low‐ and high‐density plots. Plot density had no effect on solitary bee abundance and visitation, which may be due to low pollinator abundance within the study site. The proportion of visited flowers per inflorescence was negatively influenced by floral display size, which is in line with previous studies. In addition, solitary bees spent decreasing time in successive flowers within an inflorescence, and the time spent per flower was negatively affected by ambient temperature. Our results suggest that pollinator behaviour during visitation is poorly linked to pollen deposition and reproductive success in O. militaris.

Nectar supplementation changes pollinator behaviour and pollination mode in Pedicularis dichotoma: implications for evolutionary transitions.

Gain or loss of floral nectar, an innovation in floral traits, has occurred in diverse lineages of flowering plants, but the causes of reverse transitions (gain of nectar) remain unclear. Phylogenetic studies show multiple gains and losses of floral nectar in the species-rich genus Pedicularis. Here we explore how experimental addition of nectar to a supposedly nectarless species, P. dichotoma, influences pollinator foraging behaviour. The liquid (nectar) at the base of the corolla tube in P. dichotoma was investigated during anthesis. Sugar components were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. To understand evolutionary transitions of nectar, artificial nectar was added to corolla tubes and the reactions of bumble-bee pollinators to extra nectar were examined. A quarter of unmanipulated P. dichotoma plants contained measurable nectar, with 0.01-0.49 μL per flower and sugar concentrations ranging from 4 to 39 %. The liquid surrounding the ovaries in the corolla tubes was sucrose-dominant nectar, as in two sympatric nectariferous Pedicularis species. Bumble-bees collected only pollen from control (unmanipulated) flowers of P. dichotoma, adopting a sternotribic pollination mode, but switched to foraging for nectar in manipulated (nectar-supplemented) flowers, adopting a nototribic pollination mode as in nectariferous species. This altered foraging behaviour did not place pollen on the ventral side of the bees, and sternotribic pollination also decreased. Our study is the first to quantify variation in nectar production in a supposedly 'nectarless' Pedicularis species. Flower manipulations by adding nectar suggested that gain (or loss) of nectar would quickly result in an adaptive behavioural shift in the pollinator, producing a new location for pollen deposition and stigma contact without a shift to other pollinators. Frequent gains of nectar in Pedicularis species would be beneficial by enhancing pollinator attraction in unpredictable pollination environments.

Sugar landscapes and pollinator‐mediated interactions in plant communities

Pollinator‐mediated interactions between plants can play an important role for the dynamics of plant communities. Pollination services depend on the abundance and the foraging behaviour of pollinators, which in turn respond to the availability and distribution of floral resources (notably nectar sugar). However, it is still insufficiently understood how the ‘sugar landscapes’ provided by flowering plant communities shape pollinator‐mediated interactions between multiple plant species and across different spatial scales. A better understanding of pollinator‐mediated interactions requires an integrative approach that quantifies different aspects of sugar landscapes and investigates their relative importance for pollinator behaviour and plant reproductive success. In this study, we quantified such sugar landscapes from individual‐based maps of Protea shrub communities in the Cape Floristic Region, South Africa. The 27 study sites of 4 ha each jointly comprise 127 993 individuals of 19 species. We analysed how rates of visitation by key bird pollinators and the seed set of plants respond to different aspects of sugar landscapes: the distribution of nectar sugar amounts, as well as their quality, taxonomic purity and phenology. We found that pollinator visitation rates strongly depended on phenological variation of site‐scale sugar amounts. The seed set of focal plants increased with nectar sugar amounts of conspecific neighbours and with site‐scale sugar amounts. Seed set increased particularly strongly if site‐scale sugar amounts were provided by plants that offer less sugar per inflorescence. These combined effects of the amount, quality, purity and phenological variation of nectar sugar show that nectar sugar is a common interaction currency that determines how multiple plant species interact via shared pollinators. The responses of pollinator‐mediated interactions to different aspects of this interaction currency alter conditions for species coexistence in Protea communities and may cause community‐level Allee effects that promote extinction cascades.

Consequences of a nectar yeast for pollinator preference and performance

Summary Pollinators utilize floral resources that vary in colour, scent and reward quality. Variation in such traits, including nectar rewards, in addition to cues associated with their quality, can influence pollinator foraging decisions with consequences for pollinator reproductive success. Nectar is commonly subject to colonization by micro‐organisms capable of affecting a suite of traits important for pollinator attraction and fitness; yet, links between microbial presence and changes in pollinator preference and performance remain few. Here, we evaluated the effects of a nectar‐inhabiting micro‐organism on pollinator foraging behaviour and reproduction using the common eastern bumblebee Bombus impatiens and the cosmopolitan nectar yeast Metschnikowia reukaufii. Using a combination of choice and no‐choice behavioural and feeding assays, we manipulated the presence and viability of M. reukaufii in nectar and assessed bumblebee foraging and reproductive responses. Bombus impatiens workers responded positively to the presence of yeasts. Foragers trained to associate yeast presence with flower colour visited a significantly greater proportion of flowers inoculated with yeast when subject to a colour discrimination test. Moreover, foragers naïve to nectar yeasts incorporated more yeast‐inoculated flowers into initial foraging bouts when presented with a novel floral array. In addition, bees spent significantly longer foraging on yeast‐inoculated flowers compared to yeast‐free flowers. However, when we manipulated yeast presence and viability in microcolonies of queenless workers, we found no effect of yeast on components of bumblebee reproduction, such as initiation of egg laying and number of eggs laid. This lack of an effect of yeast persisted even under conditions of pollen limitation. Taken together, these results suggest that nectar yeasts can enhance floral signalling and alter pollinator foraging behaviour at individual flowers, though they may not directly affect pollinator performance. Thus, nectar yeasts may play a significant role in mediating pollinator foraging behaviour, with consequences for plant fitness and evolution of floral traits.

The Effects of Flower, Floral Display, and Reward Sizes on Bumblebee Foraging Behavior When Pollen Is the Reward and Plants Are Dichogamous

Premise of research. The size of floral display, flower, and reward can influence pollinator foraging behavior. However, the importance of correlations between floral traits and rewards in affecting pollinator preferences is unclear. Moreover, in monoecious plants and plants with strong within-flower dichogamy, some flowers do not offer a pollen reward, and pollinator attraction may depend on the number of rewarding flowers rather than floral display size. We examined these questions in the Rocky Mountain columbine, where bumblebees can forage only for pollen produced in male-phase flowers.Methodology. We used dual-choice assays and experimental arrays to determine whether a correlation between pollen reward and flower size was necessary before bees could distinguish between flowers with different pollen rewards or sizes. The impact of floral display size on bee foraging was first examined using inflorescences where all flowers provided a reward, either small or large. We then varied either floral display size or number of rewarding flowers while keeping the other variable constant.Pivotal results. Bumblebees preferred flowers with a larger pollen reward or larger flowers only when the size of the pollen reward was correlated with flower size. Bees selected larger floral displays when all flowers presented a similar amount of pollen but preferred inflorescences with more pollen-rewarding flowers when only a proportion of the flowers offered a pollen reward.Conclusions. Bees could identify whether a flower offered pollen and could quantify the number of pollen-rewarding flowers. Correlations between floral traits and pollen reward affected pollinator preferences and may facilitate selection of floral traits by pollinators. Pollinators preferred inflorescences with more pollen-producing flowers rather than larger floral displays, which suggests that selection of floral display size by pollinators may differ between plants with different mating systems.

Floral nectary morphology and evolution inPedicularis(Orobanchaceae)

Intricate associations between floral morphology and pollinator foraging behaviour are common. In this context, the presence and form of floral nectaries can play a crucial role in driving floral evolution and diversity in flowering plants. However, the reconstruction of the ancestral state of nectary form is often hampered by a lack of anatomical studies and well-resolved phylogenetic trees. Here, we studied 39 differentially pollinated Pedicularis spp., a genus with pronounced interspecific variation in colour, shape and size of the corolla. Anatomical and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed two nectary forms [bulged (N=27) or elongated (N=5)] or the absence of nectaries (N=7). In a phylogenetic context, our data suggest that: (1) the bulged nectary should be the ancestral state; (2) nectaries were independently lost in some beaked species; and (3) elongated nectaries evolved independently in some clades of beakless species. Phylogenetic path analysis showed that nectary presence is indirectly correlated with beak length/pollinator behaviour through an intermediate factor, nectar production. No significant correlation was found between nectary type and nectar production, beak length or pollinator behaviour. Some beaked species had nectary structures, although they did not produce nectar. The nectary in beaked species may be a vestigial structure retained during a recent rapid radiation of Pedicularis, especially in the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains of south-western China.(c) 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 178, 592-607.

Pollination biology of Rhododendron cyanocarpum (Ericaceae): An alpine species endemic to NW Yunnan, China

AbstractThe pollination biology of Rhododendron cyanocarpum (Franch.) W. W. Smith, an alpine species endemic to NW Yunnan, China, was investigated between 2007 and 2008. Floral traits including flowering time, floral morphology, petal color, and floral scents were assessed, and the associated pollinator assemblage and their foraging behavior were recorded. The flowering period of R. cyanocarpum ranges from late March to middle May and a single flower can last 8–10 days in its natural habitat. Flowers generally show marked herkogamy and the protruding style encourages pollinator foraging behavior that counteracts self‐pollination. Floral scents comprise mostly aliphatics (64.37%) and terpenoids (29.88%), which make the flowers attractive for several insect groups, but a peak at 430 nm in the reflectance spectrum of petals suggest selection for the attraction of bumblebees. The two Bombus species, B. festivus and B. richardsiellus, representing 90% of total recorded visits, were the only insect species that can be considered to effectively pollinate R. cyanocarpum. Pollination treatments indicated the general self‐compatibility of R. cyanocarpum; however, outcrossing seemed to be the dominant strategy, with low rates of self‐fertilization providing a certain level of reproductive assurance in its alpine habitat.
