From feminine name to feminative. On overview of the history of the word-formation category and its nomenclature

The article presents the history of the use of the term feminativum in Polish linguistic literature and in the general language. Moreover, it discusses the issue of isolating the word-formation category of feminine names in old grammars, as well as its contemporary definitions. The study used manual and automated (corpus-assisted) data extraction. The author posits that it was Piotr Statorius-Stojeński who distinguished the category of female names in his grammar of the Polish language for foreigners published in Latin in 1568. The author also determined that the term feminativum was propagated by Bogusław Kreja, who was the first to use it in his 1964 article. Although the term appeared only occasionally in linguistic publications in the second half of the 20th century, it came to be used regularly as a synonym for the term feminine names at the turn of the 2010s and 2020s. However, the inclusion of feminativum on the list of words in the Polish Word of the Year 2019 competition may have contributed to its popularity across the media.

Poland in Blue: The Phenomenon of the Denim Clothing Industry in Polish Society During the Socialistic Period

In the People’s Republic of Poland 1 , blue jeans were much more than just an element of clothing. They have become a symbol of freedom, a generational rebellion, and an aspiration for the world on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Aid parcels sent by relatives, mainly from the USA and also from Great Britain, Canada, and Australia played a significant role in getting to know denim clothing in socialist Poland. In the second half of the 1960s, the domestic production of substitute denim-like materials 2 , including denim-like trousers, was started. They were a response to the demand, in particular, of groups of young people for products made of this type of material. The new improvements and material inventions were supervised by the association of clothing industries and research laboratories, which played an essential role in the creation of materials for domestic production (Kortan 1981). A group of active Polish textile and fashion designers contributed to promote comfortable denim clothing from the West. This article presents the role of the denim clothing industry in Poland during the socialist period (1952–1989), considering the cultural context and the impact of this clothing on discovering alternative forms, replacing the originals from capitalist countries. It should be noted that in the People’s Republic of Poland, new types of textile materials were developed and improved so that they corresponded, at least in part, to materials from the West and filled in product gaps. To this end, proprietary commercial versions of fabrics used to produce garments, including the jeans discussed in this publication, were made of a textile known as in Polish word “Teksas” a denim substitute. Researching archival materials and showing achievements in the field of textiles and fashion fills the gap in research on cultural significance of fashion, textile materials and the production of denim and clothing from domestic fabrics of the socialist era.

EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ADHEAR BONE CONDUCTION DEVICE FITTED BILATERALLY IN A CHILD WITH CONDUCTIVE HEARING LOSS: CASE STUDY

IntroductionFrequently, bone conduction hearing aids on a softband are not tolerated by children due to pressure on the head or visual esthetics. By way of contrast, a non-surgical hearing system – Adhear (Med-El, Innsbruck, Austria) – allows the sound processor to be attached using a noninvasive adhesive adapter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Adhear system and assess its subjective benefits in a child who had bilateral conductive hearing loss.Case reportThe Adhear system was tested in a 13-year-old child with bilateral conductive hearing loss. Pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry in quiet were performed without and then with a pair of devices placed bilaterally. Word recognition scores (WRS) at 50 and 65 dB SPL in quiet were measured using the Pruszewicz monosyllabic Polish word test. After 4 weeks, subjective hearing benefit and experience with the Adhear system was done using the APHAB (<i>Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit</i>) questionnaire.ResultsWith Adhear, WRS at 50 dB SPL increased significantly from an unaided score of 10% to 80%. The result of free-field audiometry with Adhear on both sides indicated a hearing level within the normal range.ConclusionsAdhear is an effective rehabilitation option for children with bilateral conductive hearing loss.

Phonological assessment and analysis tools for Polish: Construction and use

ABSTRACT This contribution presents tools for the assessment of phonological development of Polish-learning children and an initial qualitative evaluation thereof. The tools are consistent with those developed for 16 other languages in a cross-linguistic study of phonological development that is embedded in the framework of constraint-based nonlinear phonology. This theoretical foundation underlies the composition of a Polish word list for elicitation plus a supplementary analysis and intervention planning form (where intervention is warranted). A qualitative pilot study evaluated the tools in terms of adherence to underlying theoretical constructs, coverage of Polish phonology in the developmental context and utility for testing two children, one of whom was characterised by protracted phonological development. Further steps are required to develop the test into a norm-referenced instrument for clinical and research purposes, including quantitative evaluations of the tools’ psychometric properties.

Wybory translatorskie XIX-wiecznego słownikarza rosyjskiego jako impuls do badań chronologizacyjnych polskiej leksyki zapożyczonej

Fifty-one entries (with the letter M) in the Russian-Polish dictionary of 1877 which were assigned a discussion of the meaning instead of a real translation, e.g. муссон – wjatr periodyczny [a periodic wind], were examined. These were limited to borrowed Russian units which today correspond to Polish borrowed units, e.g. муссон – monsun [monsoon]. The Polish words are the object of the analysis. In order to discover the reason for their omission from the dictionary, evidence of their use in the corpus of historical texts was sought. It was found that 80% of the borrowings (41 units) occurred in texts before 1876, but some of them were not recorded in the dictionaries of the time and perhaps that is why they did not find their way into the translation dictionary. 20% of the material (10 units) is lexis that entered circulation after the dictionary was published.

The impact of spatial and verbal working memory load on semantic relatedness judgements.

Studies using a relatedness judgement task have found differences between prime-target word pairs that vary in the degree of semantic relatedness. However, the influence of working memory load on semantic processing in this task and the role of the type of working memory task have not yet been investigated. The present study therefore investigated for the first time the effect of working memory load (low vs. high) and working memory type (verbal vs. spatial) on semantic relatedness judgements. Semantically strongly related (e.g., hip - KNEE), weakly related (e.g., muscle - KNEE) and unrelated (e.g., office - KNEE) Polish word pairs were presented in an experiment involving a dual working memory and semantic relatedness task. The data revealed that, relative to semantically unrelated word pairs, responses were faster for strongly related pairs but slower for weakly related pairs. Importantly, the verbal working memory task decreased facilitation for strongly related pairs and increased inhibition for weakly related pairs relative to the spatial working memory task. Furthermore, working memory load impacted only weakly related pairs in the verbal but not in the spatial working memory task. These results show that working memory type and load influence semantic relatedness judgements, but the direction and size of the impact depend on the strength of semantic relations.

AN ESSAY IN COMPARATIVE LITERARY ONOMASTICS BASED ON POLISH AND RUSSIAN BIBLIONYMS

The article deals with some Polish biblionyms which are translations of the titles of works of Russian and world fiction. The article also examines the Polish nominations of some characters of Russian and Western European literature. Polish biblionyms are compared with Russian originals and with equivalent Russian titles of works of foreign literature. The types of transformation that Russian original titles undergo when translating them into Polish, as well as the differences between Polish and Russian biblionyms, which are translations of the titles of the same works of foreign literature, are analyzed. Among the transformations extensions, transpositions, reductions, grammatical, derivational and syntactic transformations are distinguished. Several types of transformations can be represented in one Polish biblionym (for example, transposition and extension of the abbreviation into the phrase in the Polish translation of the title of I. Babel’s Конармия as Armia konna. Transformation may be due to the differences between the compared languages (for example, the usual, with some exeptions, postpositive place of the adjective attribute in Polish, in contrast to the Russian language, requires a transposition in Polish translations of such titles of A.S. Pushkin’s works as Медный всадник - Polish Jeździec miedziany, Каменный гость - Polish Gość kamienny, Пиковая дама - Polish Dama pikowa. The transformation may also depend on the intentions and preferences of the translator (in particular, the choice of one of the synonyms existing in the Polish language - cf. variants Dom z facjatą and Dom z attyką for the title of a story by A.P. Chekhov Дом с мезонином, or options Dół and Wykop for the title of A. Platonov’s work Котлован. In some cases, the Polish biblionyms reflect the translator’s desire to bring them closer to the title of the original (cf. the translation of A.P. Chekhov’s story title Мальчики as Malcy in the presence of a synonym chłopcy or the use of the Polish word identical to the Czech lexeme wojak and not żołnierz in the title of J. Hašek’s novel about the adventures of Schweik. The replacement of the title of the original or its transformation may be associated with the desire to reveal the content of the work (cf. the translation of the title of the play by A.N. Ostrovsky Доходное место as Łapownicy specifying the source of income for a number of characters - bribes) or give the biblionym a more generalized, symbolic character (cf. replacing the prepositional-case construction with the nominative case form in the title of A.P. Chekhov’s В овраге - Polish Wąwóz). Comparison of Polish biblionyms with Russian original and translated titles of literary works shows the need to compile a dictionary of similar biblionyms, focused on Russianspeaking students studying the Polish language.

Guessing from Textones. Distributed Translation as Exemplified by Sea and Spar Between (2010) by Stephanie Strickland and Nick Montfort

This article discusses the challenges of translating poetry generators in multi-authorial, creative collaborations and within the context of understanding text as a process. Stephanie Strickland’s and Nick Montfort’s Sea and Spar Between is in many respects a translational challenge that in some languages might be considered an impossible task. Polish, our target language, imposes some serious constraints: one-syllable words become disyllabic or multisyllabic, kennings have different morphological, lexical, and grammatical arrangements, and most of the generative rhetoric of the original (like anaphors) must take into consideration the grammatical gender of Polish words. As a result, the JavaScript code, instructions that accompany the JavaScript file, and arrays of words that this poetry generator draws from, needed to be expanded and rewritten. Moreover, in several crucial points of this rule-driven work, natural language forced us to modify the code. In translating Sea and Spar Between, the process of negotiation between the source language and the target language involves more factors than in the case of traditional translation. Strickland and Montfort read Dickinson and Melville and parse their readings into a computer program (in itself a translation, or port, from Python to JavaScript), which combines them in almost countless ways. Such a collision of cultures, languages, and tools becomes amplified when transposed into a different language. This transposition involves the original authors of Sea and Spar Between, the four original translators of Dickinson and Melville into Polish, and ourselves, turning into a multilayered translational challenge, something we propose to call a distributed translation. While testing the language and the potential of poetry translation in the digital age, the experiment – we hope – has produced some fascinating and thought-provoking poetry.

Etymology as a vehicle for Polish-English cultural links

Etymology is one of the ways to demonstrate cultural links between Poland and England and can be used in glottodidactics. The cardinal objective of the article is to present the results of an etymological analysis of selected Polish and English words that derive from the same etymon. It also outlines the advantages and ways of using elements of etymology in language teaching. Since the languages share a common ancestor in the form of the Proto-Indo-European language, it is not surprising that a significant number of Polish and English words share a common origin. What seems intriguing and less obvious is how the shape and meaning of some of them have evolved over time, and this non-obviousness was one of the criteria for selecting the words analysed. For example, from the Proto-Indo-European root *gu̯en- come both the Polish word żona ‘wife’ and the English word queen ‘wife of a king’, which used to refer to ‘woman in general’ in both languages.

Polish 'pieszy' and English 'foot': An analysis of a pair of cognates

The research concentrates on investigating the etymological relationship between the Polish term pieszy ‘pedestrian, on foot’, and the English word foot, both tracing their origins back to a common Proto-IndoEuropean root *ped-. The objective of this study is to recognize and document the various morphological, phonological, and semantic changes that this shared ancestral word has experienced throughout its evolution. The study intends to prove that the Polish word pieszy and the English word foot represent cognates by demonstrating their shared elements and explaining changes that affected them.

How to Imagine a New Community from Science Fiction: A Pedagogical Dramaturgy of Silence, for a Slow Education

Europe has just established the first regulation for artificial intelligences. Large technology corporations and private educational institutions are already imagining neural networks educating us. Has anyone stopped to think about who, how and for what purpose we humans are going to educate machines? The Spanish critical pedagogy research team (PEDACRI), after participating in international conferences on digital education, robotics, ethics in the metaverse and cartography of hyperreality and participating in various publications on the challenges of pedagogy and ethics in the technologisation of educational processes, reflects in this essay on the challenges and questions we need to ask ourselves to imagine the post-human or trans-human community to come. Reviewing works coming from philosophy and those plays, series and films that address the future and the relationship between humans and machines, we analyse the opportunities and threats that can humanise machines or programme them as soulless weapons, which can civilise us or return us to a state of barbarism. The word robot, let us not forget, is derived from the Polish word roboca, which means “slave”. Will we be able, as the replicant in Blade Runner wonders, to programme silence? What can philosophy and pedagogy contribute to the ethical programming of algorithms?

Evaluation of New Polish Articulation Lists (NAL-93) in the Presence of Various Speech-Like Maskers

The main goal of the research was to obtain a set of data for ability of speech in noise recognition using Polish word test (New Articulation Lists – NAL-93) with two different masking signals. The attempt was also made to standardise the background noise for Polish speech tests by creating babble noise for NAL-93. Two types of background noise were used for Polish word test – the babble noise and the speech noise. The short method was chosen in the study as it provided similar results to constant stimuli method using less word material. The experiment using both maskers was presented to 10 listeners with normal hearing. The mean SRT values for NAL-93 were −3.4 dB SNR for speech noise and 3.0 dB SNR for babble noise. In this regard, babble noise provided more efficient results. However, the SRT parameter for speech noise was more similar to values obtained for other Polish speech tests. The measurement of speech recognition using Polish word test is possible for both types of masking signals presented in the study. The decision as to which type of noise would be better in practice of hearing aid prosthetics remains an open-end question.

Speech Intelligibility Test for Polish Language – Relation to the Acoustic Properties of Classrooms and Comparison to Other Languages

Numerous studies have shown that teachers often speak louder in classrooms because of the acoustic properties of the spaces. To improve the acoustics in classrooms, it is necessary to develop relevant acoustic criteria. Existing evaluation scales for parameters of room acoustics have been developed on the basis of studies of adults for a variety of languages (e.g. Dutch and English). One of the issues still not fully recognized is the effect of the respondents’ language and age on the results of speech intelligibility tests. The aim of the study was to recognize the possibility of applying some international guidelines for room acoustics developed on the basis of adult studies to classrooms in Polish schools. This paper presents a study of the speech intelligibility of Polish-speaking children (10–13 years old) in conjunction with parameters of room acoustics. It also compares studies of speech intelligibility for other languages. The study confirmed a relationship between the results of speech intelligibility tests and speech transmission index STI for classrooms with varied acoustics. It also showed that the results of Polish word test are similar to results of English tests (Anderson, Kalb, 1987; Jacob et al., 1990).

Chamber Ensemble Named After Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński: 20 Years of SocioCultural Communication

The relevance of the study. Problems of socio-cultural communication in music art are of highest relevance in sociology and music studies, especially, during the war, when it is necessary to preserve all cultural assets of the country.
 The purpose of the article: to trace stages of formation and activity of honoured collective representative of Polish culture – Chamber ensemble named after Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński of social organization Zhytomyr Regional Association of the Poles of Ukraine in the beginning of the XXIst century and had been actively concertizing before the very beginning of the “great war” (February 2022).
 In order to achieve the said purpose the following methods were used:
 
 of culture studies (historical-genetic, historical-dynamic, comparative);
 of sociology of music (sociological observation);
 communicative music studies (content analysis, discourse analysis, functional-communicative);
 of theory of performing (historical-stylistic, genre, interpretation).
 
 Problem statement. Activity of the ensemble for 20 years has been covered in newspapers, magazines, sites of Zhytomyr Regional Union of the Poles of Ukraine, social networks, TV shows “Slovo polske” [The Polish Word] and “Poliaky Zhytomyrshchyny” [The Poles of Zhytomyr land]. Mostly in genre of announcements, reviews, feedback of listeners.
 History of the ensemble and professional assessment of its creative work and social activities became actual only with awareness that important cultural phenomena can exist not only in the capital, but in province as well.
 Scientific novelty. Distinctive features of the Chamber ensemble named after Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński as subject of research is duration and cultural edifying and educational nature of its functioning. Suggested research is the first attempt to trace activity of this group in the said aspect.
 Statement of basic material. The article reviews activity of the ensemble starting from its creation at the late XX and early XXI centuries until the last concert that took place before the “great war”.
 We have distinguished main spheres of its activity: performing music composers of Volyn-Zhytomyr land; revival of traditions of Catholic Church concerts; social and educational activity.
 Conclusions and directions for future research. Chamber ensemble named after Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński is a rather rare example of self-organization of the collective ideologically motivated. The research perspective could be monography about its activity.

A Comparative Study of Teaching L2 Vocabulary with and without Illustrations to Virtual EFL Learners

Second language learning research suggests that visual aids and illustrations have the potential to enhance proficiency and retention of vocabulary terms in a foreign language. This study builds off of this literature by studying Native English speakers learning of Polish words using images versus no images. This quantitative study compares the effectiveness of 2 learning methods within groups that studied 10 vocabulary terms in Polish: (1) participants studying with virtual flashcards with illustrations, and (2) participants studying with virtual flashcards without illustrations. After a 10-minute virtual tutorial, participants were asked to fill out a Google form that measured their vocabulary retention. They were then asked to fill out the same Google form after 5 days.

ABOUT GOOD TASTE (POLISH: GUST) AND DELICIOUS TASTE (POLISH: SMAK): IN OTHER WORDS: WHY THE POLISH WORD GUST LOST ITS ETYMOLOGICAL MEANING The word gust was borrowed from Western European Languages in 17th century in a few meanings, including perception of taste and flavour of food and appetite. The author of this article discusses the very etymological meaning of the word gust and also words derived from it: the adjective gustowny and adverb gustownie. The author presents the reasons why this etymological meaning disappeared from Polish language, which is compared in the context of the synonymic Polish word smak and other borrowings with the core of word (-gust-). The article discusses the etymology and history of the Polish word gust along with the examples of its exact meaning found in texts from 17th and 18th centuries, especially in cookbooks. The article also explains the semantic evolution of gust. In order to achieve her objective, the author used historical dictionaries, descriptions of cultural changes associated with the French idea of bon goût, and also linguistic descriptions concerning semantic changes of the lexis of taste evolving into their metaphorical meanings. This article underlines the evolution of the meaning of the Polish words gust and smak during the past centuries.

Madka z bombelkami, czyli o leksykalnych nośnikach lakunarności

The aim of the paper is to analyse two lexemes belonging to the most recent layer of the modern Polish lexicon, mainly the words madka and bombelek which are deeply rooted in culture, as lacunary units, i.e. non-equivalent items, from a Polish-English perspective. The analysis of lexicographic entries constitutes a starting point for the investigation of the potential approximate English equivalents of both lexemes and verifying the hypothesis concerning their lacunarity. The research on English corresponding units allows the conclusion to be drawn that the two Polish words are non-equivalent at the systematic level, since they refer to complex mental constructs, evoke cultural connotations and are judgemental.

A GRAMMATICAL OUTLINE OF THE DIALECT OF THE POLISH ARMENIANS FROM KUTY In the 1950s, the Armenian and Greek Catholic priest Kazimierz Roszko (1916- 1987), lector of the Armenian language at the Jagiellonian University, collected materials on a vanishing dialect of the Polish Armenians, which was spoken longest in the town of Kuty by the Czeremosz River. His doctoral thesis prepared on this subject is still a manuscript. The article includes its main fragments elaborated by Andrzej Pisowicz. As material for the doctoral dissertation of Roszko, texts collected by him and published in the journal “Folia Orientalia” were used, as well as materials published in the 19th century by Jan Hanusz and supplements of Bogdan Dawidowicz and Jerzy Kuryłowicz from the 1920s and 1930s. The native words of the Armenian dialect from Kuty constitute a continuation of the vocabulary of the Old Armenian language. Furthermore, the dialect of the Polish Armenians abounds with primarily Turkic borrowings (mainly from the Kipchak language), among which one can find words of the Arabic origin (Semitic words) and the Persian origin (Iranian, Indo-European words). The Armenians of Kuty also borrowed many words from the Romanian language, which they had spoken before arrival to the Czeremosz River. The newest borrowing layer of the dialect of the Armenians from Kuty includes Ruthenian and, of course, Polish words. The article discusses phonetics, morphologyand syntax against the comparative background. A few texts which illustrate the dialect have been presented in the appendix.
