Core-resonant double photoemission from palladium films

We studied the core-resonant double photoemission process from palladium films with linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. We excited either the 3d or 4p core level and focused on the Auger transitions which leave two holes in the valence band. We find that the two-dimensional energy distributions are markedly different for the 3d and 4p decay. The 3d decay can be understood by a sequential emission of the two electrons while the 4p decay proceeds in a single step. Despite the large differences in the two-dimensional energy spectra we find the shape of the energy sum spectra rather similar. For the description of the 4p decay we propose a model which uses available single electron spectra, but suggest an alternative interpretation of these data. With this we are able to explain the range over which the available energy is shared. Key assumptions of the model are verified by our experiments on the 3d decay.

The influence of the bromine atom Cooper minimum on the photoelectron angular distributions and branching ratios of the four outermost bands of bromobenzene.

Angle resolved photoelectron spectra of the X̃(2)B1, Ã(2)A2, B̃(2)B2, and C̃(2)B1 states of bromobenzene have been recorded over the excitation range 20.5-94 eV using linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. The photoelectron anisotropy parameters and electronic branching ratios derived from these spectra have been compared to theoretical predictions obtained with the continuum multiple scattering approach. This comparison shows that ionization from the 8b2 orbital and, to a lesser extent, the 4b1 orbital is influenced by the Cooper minimum associated with the bromine atom. The 8b2 and 4b1 orbitals are nominally bromine lone-pairs, but the latter orbital interacts strongly with the π-orbitals in the benzene ring and this leads to a reduced atomic character. Simulations of the X̃(2)B1, B̃(2)B2, and C̃(2)B1 state photoelectron bands have enabled most of the vibrational structures appearing in the experimental spectra to be assigned. Many of the photoelectron peaks exhibit an asymmetric shape with a tail towards low binding energy. This asymmetry has been examined in the simulations of the vibrationally unexcited peak, due mainly to the adiabatic transition, in the X̃(2)B1 state photoelectron band. The simulations show that the asymmetric profile arises from hot-band transitions. The inclusion of transitions originating from thermally populated levels results in a satisfactory agreement between the experimental and simulated peak shapes.

Separating weak lensing and intrinsic alignments using radio observations

We discuss methods for performing weak lensing using radio observations to recover information about the intrinsic structural properties of the source galaxies. Radio surveys provide unique information that can benefit weak lensing studies, such as HI emission, which may be used to construct galaxy velocity maps, and polarized synchrotron radiation; both of which provide information about the unlensed galaxy and can be used to reduce galaxy shape noise and the contribution of intrinsic alignments. Using a proxy for the intrinsic position angle of an observed galaxy, we develop techniques for cleanly separating weak gravitational lensing signals from intrinsic alignment contamination in forthcoming radio surveys. Random errors on the intrinsic orientation estimates introduce biases into the shear and intrinsic alignment estimates. However, we show that these biases can be corrected for if the error distribution is accurately known. We demonstrate our methods using simulations, where we reconstruct the shear and intrinsic alignment auto and cross-power spectra in three overlapping redshift bins. We find that the intrinsic position angle information can be used to successfully reconstruct both the lensing and intrinsic alignment power spectra with negligible residual bias.

Circular polarization of synchrotron radiation in high magnetic fields

The general model for incoherent synchrotron radiation has long been known, with the first theory being published by Westfold in $1959$ and continued by Westfold and Legg in $1968$. When this model was first developed it was applied to radiation from Jupiter, with a magnetic field of $\approx$ 1 G. Pulsars have a magnetic field of $\approx 10^{12}$ G. The Westfold and Legg model predict a circular polarization which is proportional to the square root of the magnetic field, and consequently predicts greater than 100 per cent circular polarization at high magnetic fields. Here a new model is derived based upon a more detailed analysis of the pitch angle distribution. This model is concerned with the frequency range $f_{B_0}/\gamma <<f\lesssim f_{B_0}$, noting that $f_{B_0} = 2.7\times10^7B$, which for a relatively high magnetic field ($\sim 10^6-10^8$ Gauss) leaves emission in the optical range. This is much lower than the expected frequency peak for a mono-energetic particle of $0.29\frac{3eB}{4\pi m_e c}\gamma^2$. We predict the circular polarization peaks around $10^7$G in the optical regime with the radiation almost $15$ per cent circularly polarized. The linear polarization changes from about $60$ to $80$ per cent in the same regime. We examine implications of this for pulsar studies.

Depth Profile of Induced Magnetic Polarization in Cu Layers of Co/Cu(111) Metallic Superlattices by Resonant X-ray Magnetic Scattering at the Cu K Absorption Edge

We investigated induced spin polarization of 4p conduction electrons in Cu layers of antiferromagnetically (AFM) and ferromagnetically (FM) coupled Co/Cu(111) metallic superlattices by resonant X-ray magnetic scattering at the Cu K absorption edge. Magnetic reflectivity profiles of the two superlattices were measured in the magnetic saturation state with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation X-rays at 8985 eV. Depth profiles of the resonant magnetic scattering length of Cu, which corresponds to the induced spin polarization of Cu, were evaluated in the two Co/Cu superlattices by analyzing the observed magnetic reflectivity profiles. We demonstrated that the spin polarization induced in the Cu layer was distributed around the Co/Cu interfaces with an attenuation length of several A in both AFM and FM coupled superlattices. The uniform component, which exists in Au layers of Fe/Au(001) superlattices, was not found in the depth distribution of induced magnetic polarization in the Cu layers of Co/Cu(111)...

Anisotropy-Guided Enantiomeric Enhancement in Alanine Using Far-UV Circularly Polarized Light.

All life on Earth is characterized by its asymmetry - both the genetic material and proteins are composed of homochiral monomers. Understanding how this molecular asymmetry initially arose is a key question related to the origins of life. Cometary ice simulations, L-enantiomeric enriched amino acids in meteorites and the detection of circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation in star-forming regions point to a possible interstellar/protostellar generation of stereochemical asymmetry. Based upon our recently recorded anisotropy spectra g(λ) of amino acids in the vacuum-UV range, we subjected amorphous films of racemic (13)C-alanine to far-UV circularly polarized synchrotron radiation to probe the asymmetric photon-molecule interaction under interstellar conditions. Optical purities of up to 4% were reached, which correlate with our theoretical predictions. Importantly, we show that chiral symmetry breaking using circularly polarized light is dependent on both the helicity and the wavelength of incident light. In order to predict such stereocontrol, time-dependent density functional theory was used to calculate anisotropy spectra. The calculated anisotropy spectra show good agreement with the experimental ones. The European Space Agency's Rosetta mission, which successfully landed Philae on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12 November 2014, will investigate the configuration of chiral compounds and thereby obtain data that are to be interpreted in the context of the results presented here.

CIRCULAR POLARIZATION OF PULSAR WIND NEBULAE AND THE COSMIC-RAY POSITRON EXCESS

Recent observations by the PAMELA and AMS-02 telescopes have uncovered an anomalous rise in the positron fraction at energies above 10~GeV. One possible explanation for this excess is the production of primary electron/positron pairs through electromagnetic cascades in pulsar magnetospheres. This process results in a high multiplicity of electron/positron pairs within the wind-termination shock of pulsar wind nebula (PWN). A consequence of this scenario is that no circular polarization should be observed within PWN, since the contributions from electrons and positrons exactly cancel. Here we note that current radio instruments are capable of setting meaningful limits on the circular polarization of synchrotron radiation in PWNs, which observationally test the model for pulsar production of the local positron excess. The observation of a PWN with detectable circular polarization would cast strong doubt on pulsar interpretations of the positron excess, while observations setting strong limits on the circular polarization of PWN would lend credence to these models. Finally, we indicate which pulsar wind nebulae are likely to provide the best targets for observational tests of the AMS-02 excess.

Interference Effects in T-MOKE Spectra of Fe Thin Films at the 3p Edges - Theory and Experiment

We present combined first-principle calculations and experimental results of the transversal magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE) of thin Fe films across the 3p edges using linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. We show that the experimental T-MOKE spectra at the 3p edges of Fe exhibit clear signals that are strongly influenced by interference effects. Ab initio calculated T-MOKE asymmetry spectra confirm the importance of interference effects. The comparison of experimental with calculated spectra reveals some differences that we attribute to metal/metal interface roughness that is not taken into account in the calculations.

Polarimetric and spectroscopic optical observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 0614+091

Aims: We present a polarimetric and spectroscopic study of the persistent ultra compact X-ray binary 4U 0614+091 aimed at searching for the emission of a relativistic particle jet and at unveiling the orbital period of the system. Methods: We obtained r-band polarimetric observations with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) equipped with the PAOLO polarimeter and with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) equipped with the ALFOSC instrument, covering ~ 2 hours and ~ 0.5 hours observations, respectively. We carried out low resolution spectroscopy of the system using the ESO Very Large Telescope equipped with FORS1 for ~ 1.5 hours (16 spectra covering the range 430-800 nm). Results: The polarimetric analysis performed starting from the TNG dataset revealed a polarisation degree in the r-band of 3 % +/- 1 %. From the NOT dataset, due to the lower S/N ratio, we could obtain only a 3 sigma upper limit of 3.4 %. From the joining of a spectroscopic and photometric analysis, through the study of the equivalent width variations of the CII 724 nm line and the r-band light curve, we could find a hint of a ~ 45 min periodicity. Conclusions: A polarisation degree P of ~ 3 % in the r-band is consistent with the emission of a relativistic particle jet, which is supposed to emit intrinsically linearly polarised synchrotron radiation. Since no variations of P with time have been detected, and the accretion disc of the system does not contain ionised hydrogen, scattering by free electrons in the accretion disc has been rejected. The period of ~ 45 min obtained through the analysis of the system light curve and of the equivalent width variations of the selected spectral line is probably linked to the presence of a hot spot or a superhump in the accretion disc, and lead to an orbital period > 1 hour for the binary system.

Experimental investigation of left-right asymmetry in photon-atom interaction

Single ionization of noble gas atoms by linearly polarized synchrotron radiation has been studied by employing angle- and energy-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The measurements were carried out in the plane defined by the momentum and polarization vectors of the photon. Parameters describing the left-right asymmetry (LRA) (relative to the photon propagation direction) of the photoelectron angular distribution were determined experimentally for the $s$-shells of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe atoms and H$_2$ molecules and for the $p$-shells of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe atoms. The values of the left-right asymmetry differ significantly from zero for both subshells. The photon and photoelectron energy dependence of the LRA parameters are presented also. Possible experimental and instrumental sources that could generate asymmetry are discussed and excluded as well.

Temperature-dependent spin magnetization density in Mn-rich Ni-Mn-Sn shape memory alloy by magnetic Compton scattering

Temperature-dependent spin momentum densities in Ni2Mn1.4Sn0.6 shape memory alloy have been measured using 182 keV circularly polarized synchrotron radiations. Near the martensitic phase transition , experimental magnetic Compton profiles (MCPs) unravel a dominating spin moment contribution from Mn sites. First-principles calculations are found to produce higher magnetic moment for orthorhombic structure than that for the L21 (cubic) structure, which is in tune with the present MCP data. It is also concluded that the spin moments of excess Mn atoms lying at Sn sites are antiferromagnetically coupled with Mn local spin moment in both the phases.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy in x-ray magnetic linear dichroism at the 3pedges of crystalline Fe thin films

X-ray magnetic linear dichroism spectra measured in reflection (XMLD-R) on crystalline bcc Fe thin films across the 3$p$ absorption edges are reported. A series of measurements with varying orientation of the electric field vector of the linear polarized synchrotron radiation with respect to the crystal axes reveals a strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the XMLD-R spectra. The spectra agree well with theoretical spectra calculated within the framework of the density-functional theory accounting for the spin-orbital and exchange splitting of the $3p$ semicore states on an equal footing.

Electric octupole contribution to the angular distribution of the krypton 4p photoelectrons

The angular distribution of Kr 4p photoelectrons was measured with linearly polarized synchrotron radiation in the function of the photon energy. The shape of the measured angular distributions indicates the presence of octupol interaction.

The local magnetic properties of [MnIII6 CrIII]3+ and [FeIII6 CrIII]3+ single-molecule magnets deposited on surfaces studied by spin-polarized photoemission and XMCD with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation

It is demonstrated that local magnetic moments of single molecule magnets (SMM) normally studied by XMCD at very low temperatures and high magnetic fields can be measured by means of spin-resolved electron emission in the paramagnetic phase at room temperature by use of circularly polarized radiation.

Electronic excitations of helium bilayers on a metal substrate

Neutral one-hole, one-electron excitations converging to the $\mathrm{He}1s$ ionization limit of He bilayers on a metal surface are studied with linearly polarized synchrotron radiation and time-of-flight techniques. Comparing signals of emitted electrons, emitted He atoms in metastable excited states, and fluorescence photons as a function of photon energy and polarization with theoretical results, a detailed picture of the photoexcitation is obtained. We show that the width of the photoabsorption peaks is governed in an anisotropic way by the large zero point motion of the He atoms; broadening directly correlates with the shape of the electronic clouds of the absorbing states.

VUV Photodynamics and Chiral Asymmetry in the Photoionization of Gas Phase Alanine Enantiomers

The valence shell photoionization of the simplest proteinaceous chiral amino acid, alanine, is investigated over the vacuum ultraviolet region from its ionization threshold up to 18 eV. Tunable and variable polarization synchrotron radiation was coupled to a double imaging photoelectron/photoion coincidence (i(2)PEPICO) spectrometer to produce mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectra and derive the state-selected fragmentation channels. The photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), an orbital-sensitive, conformer-dependent chiroptical effect, was also recorded at various photon energies and compared to continuum multiple scattering calculations. Two complementary vaporization methods-aerosol thermodesorption and a resistively heated sample oven coupled to an adiabatic expansion-were applied to promote pure enantiomers of alanine into the gas phase, yielding neutral alanine with different internal energy distributions. A comparison of the photoelectron spectroscopy, fragmentation, and dichroism measured for each of the vaporization methods was rationalized in terms of internal energy and conformer populations and supported by theoretical calculations. The analytical potential of the so-called PECD-PICO detection technique-where the electron spectroscopy and circular dichroism can be obtained as a function of mass and ion translational energy-is underlined and applied to characterize the origin of the various species found in the experimental mass spectra. Finally, the PECD findings are discussed within an astrochemical context, and possible implications regarding the origin of biomolecular asymmetry are identified.

Polarization-dependent ARPES measurement for valence band of anatase TiO2

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy utilizing linearly polarized synchrotron radiation was conducted to examine the electronic structure of an anatase TiO2(001) thin film fabricated on LaAlO3(100) by pulsed laser deposition. Polarization-dependent measurements by changing the incidence angle of the light were performed to identify the orbital symmetry. Energy–momentum dispersion curves along the [001] direction are mapped and resolved into four components: O 2p-derived Pπ non-bonding, O 2p–Ti 3d σ bonding, and two π bonding states. The intensities of the π bonding states are obviously different between both polarizations while the intensities of the peaks due to Pπ and σ are almost equivalent. Two different π states with polarization dependence were attributed to Ti t1uπ orbital. The result implies that the distortion of TiO6 octahedra resolves degeneracy of T1u bands and/or breaking T2g symmetry.

Resonant and magnetic X-ray diffraction by polarized synchrotron radiation

The aim of these notes is to introduce the experimental methods and theoretical works in the domain of magnetic and resonant x-rays scattering on single crystals to investigate the electronic and magnetic long range order in strongly correlated electron systems. We highlight the role of the x-rays polarization analysis and control to determine the magnetic structure of materials and, more generally, the electronic long range order parameters responsible for the phase transitions.

TURBULENT, EXTREME MULTI-ZONE MODEL FOR SIMULATING FLUX AND POLARIZATION VARIABILITY IN BLAZARS

The author presents a model for variability of the flux and polarization of blazars in which turbulent plasma flowing at a relativistic speed down a jet crosses a standing conical shock. The shock compresses the plasma and accelerates electrons to energies up to gamma(max) > 1E4 times their rest-mass energy, with the value of gamma(max) determined by the direction of the magnetic field relative to the shock front. The turbulence is approximated in a computer code as many cells, each with a uniform magnetic field whose direction is selected randomly. The density of high-energy electrons in the plasma changes randomly with time in a manner consistent with the power spectral density of flux variations derived from observations of blazars. The variations in flux and polarization are therefore caused by continuous noise processes rather than by singular events such as explosive injection of energy at the base of the jet. Sample simulations illustrate the behavior of flux and linear polarization versus time that such a model produces. The variations in gamma-ray flux generated by the code are often, but not always, correlated with those at lower frequencies, and many of the flares are sharply peaked. The mean degree of polarization of synchrotron radiation is higher and its time-scale of variability shorter toward higher frequencies, while the polarization electric vector sometimes randomly executes apparent rotations. The slope of the spectral energy distribution exhibits sharper breaks than can arise solely from energy losses. All of these results correspond to properties observed in blazars.
