Light propagation in a planar dielectric slab waveguide with step discontinuities

Here we use the operator formalism of Part 1 to carry out numerical investigations of step discontinuities in planar dielectric waveguides . Up to now, mainly symmetrical configurations have been analysed, and so in this paper asymmetrical configurations will be investigated primarily and also compared with the corresponding symmetrical onesthe optical properties of a realistic rounded step will be compared with those of an ideal step discontinuity. On the Theory of Corrugated Optical Disk Waveguides

The corrugated disk dielectric waveguide is investigated by considering a linear combination of orthogonal wavefunctions of the uncorrugated device. It is shown that, just as in the case of corrugated planar slab waveguides, codirectional as well as contradirectional coupling of guided modes is possible. Some potential applications of the device are discussed and device parameters are investigated for specific waveguide materials.
