Ardisiarecurvipetala (Primulaceae-Myrsinoideae), a new species from northern Peninsular Malaysia.

Recent fieldwork in Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia, resulted in the collection of an endemic new species of Ardisia, described here as Ardisiarecurvipetala Julius, Siti-Munirah & Utteridge. The species is a member of subgenus (§) Crispardisia on account of its vascularised glands (bacterial nodules) on the leaf margin and the terminal inflorescence on a specialised lateral branch subtended by a normal leaf (rather than a reduced bract-like leaf). Ardisiarecurvipetala is unique amongst all members of §Crispardisia by having leaf margins with both vascularised glands and pustule-like structures and can be further distinguished from other Peninsular Malaysian members of this subgenus by the lamina raised between the leaf venation giving a somewhat bullate appearance, unbranched inflorescences, brownish-red pedicels and recurved corolla lobes, each with a creamy-white apex and a small pink patch at the base. Ardisiarecurvipetala is known only from a single location in Terengganu and its conservation status is assessed as Data Deficient (DD).

Ectopic extramammary Paget disease in thoracic location

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare skin cancer that affects areas with a high concentration of apocrine glands including genital, axillary, and anal skin. When it affects other locations it is called ectopic extramammary Paget disease (E-EMPD) and is uncommon. To date, there are only 45 case reports to the best of our knowledge. The clinical manifestation is typically a soft, red or bright pink patch or plaque with scattered white islands of hyperkeratosis and erosion. Diagnostic confirmation requires conventional histology with immunohistochemistry. The importance of immunohistochemical staining for the diagnosis of primary neoplasia, without underlying malignancy, is highlighted. We report the first Latin American confirmed case, to our knowledge, of primary E-EMPD in a 55-year-old man with a 1-year history of asymptomatic thoracic plaque.

Case 2: Solitary Foot Nodule in a Newborn

A term male infant weighing 3.6 kg is born to a 33-year-old gravida 2, para 1 white mother by normal vaginal delivery at 41 1/7 weeks. The prenatal and delivery course was unremarkable. Physical examination at birth shows a small nodule on the plantar aspect of the right foot measuring 1 × 1 × 0.6 cm (Fig 1). The nodule is reddish-brownish in color and firm in consistency, with mild crusting. Also notable are some areas of dry blood over the nodule. On further examination, a pink vascular patch measuring 8 × 4 mm is noted on the right anterior chest. The remainder of the physical examination findings are unremarkable. Complete blood cell count shows a white blood cell count of 12,100/μL (12.1 × 109/L), hemoglobin of 19.1 g/dL (191 g/L), hematocrit of 58.8% (0.58), and platelet count of 306 × 103/μL (306 × 109/L). Investigation and characterization of red thread and pink patch on warm-season turfgrasses in Hainan Province, tropical China

Red thread caused by Laetisaria fuciformis and pink patch caused by Limonomyces roseipellis often occur on many cool-season turfgrass species in temperate regions throughout the world. Incidences of L. fuciformis causing red thread on seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum) and Li. roseipellis causing pink patch on hybrid bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis) have been reported as new diseases in Hainan Province, a Chinese island with a tropical climate. Field investigations were carried out at 14 golf courses and three college lawns in six cities of Hainan Province from April 2011 to April 2013. Red thread disease was observed on four warm-season turfgrasses throughout the period in all six cities, while pink patch was found on two warm-season turfgrasses in three cities. A total of 21 red thread isolates and five pink patch isolates were collected from these infected turfgrasses. These isolates were identified based on morphological and culture characteristics as well as nucleotide sequences from partial mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal RNA (mtSSU) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal RNA (nuLSU) genes. The optimal temperature for hyphal growth was either 25 or 28 °C for red thread isolates and 28 °C for pink patch isolates. The growth rate of all isolates was significantly less when cultures were grown under continuous light compared to the 12 h light/12 h dark or 24 h dark regimes. Arthroconidia production was optimized under the 12 h light/12 h dark regime. Selected fungal isolates were tested for pathogenicity by inoculating on ‘Seaspray’ seashore paspalum, ‘Princess 77’ bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), and ‘Lanyin No 3’ japanese lawngrass (Zoysia japonica) under controlled environmental conditions. All tested L. fuciformis and Li. roseipellis induced foliar blight in the turfgrass species.

Myopericytoma as an unusual cause of scarring alopecia in a child

Myopericytoma is a benign tumor composed of myoid-appearing oval to spindle-shaped cells arranged in a concentric perivascular pattern of growth. It arises most commonly in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue of the extremities in adults, and presents as a well-circumscribed, slow-growing, painless firm tumor. We describe a case of myopericytoma with unusual clinical presentation as scarring alopecia in a 14-year-old girl without any underlying disease, who presented with a 2-month history of a pink patch with hair loss on her frontal scalp. Under the diagnosis of discoid lupus erythematosus, an incisional biopsy was also performed. The biopsy specimen revealed a myopericytoma characterized by a subcutaneous large vein-like structure surrounded by spindled, stellate, and cuboidal cells with multiple small branching vascular spaces. The overlying dermis was fibrotic with dilated vessels and the number of hair follicles was decreased. No features of lupus erythematosus were noted and a lupus band test was negative. Total excision was performed. No recurrence occurred in the following 2 years.

First Report of Limonomyces roseipellis Causing Pink Patch on Bermudagrass in South China.

Hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) is widely used on golf course putting greens in southern China. In September 2011, circular pink patches ranging from 10 to 20 cm in diameter were observed on putting greens established with cv. 'Tifgreen' on a golf course in Haikou, Hainan Province. There were approximately 50 pink patches on a putting green. Infected leaves were covered with pink, gelatinous fungal mycelium, which resulted in the production of chlorotic lesions. Lesions expanded, became water-soaked, and leaves died basipetally. A pink fungus, characterized by the presence of clamp connections, was consistently isolated from leaves of infected plants on a potato dextrose agar amended with 0.01% gentamicin sulfate. Based on morphological characteristics, the fungus was preliminary identified as Limonomyces roseipellis Stalpers & Loerakker, the causal agent of pink patch of turfgrass (2,3). To verify the identity, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of rDNA was amplified and sequenced using primers ITS1 and ITS4. Comparison with sequences in the GenBank database revealed that the ITS sequence (Accession No. KC193592) showed 98% homology with the sequence of L. roseipellis (EU622846). For pathogenicity tests, inoculum was prepared by culturing the fungus on an autoclaved mixture of 100 g of rye grain and 20 ml water for 3 weeks at 25°C. Six-week-old C. dactylon plants in 10-cm pots were inoculated by placing 2 g of infested grain in the center of the turf canopy, or 2 g sterilized, uninfested grain as a control, with four replications of each treatment. After inoculation, pots were covered with translucent plastic bags and placed in a greenhouse at 24 ± 2°C with a 12-h photoperiod (1). After 3 weeks, more than 70% of leaves in the infested pots showed symptoms identical to those observed under natural conditions while control plants remained asymptomatic. The fungus was reisolated from symptomatic plants. To our knowledge, this is the first report of L. roseipellis causing pink patch on hybrid bermudagrass in China.

Linear atrophoderma of Moulin progressing slowly over 46 years

Linear atrophoderma of Moulin is a rare acquired disorder arising most commonly during childhood or adolescence, occurring equally in both sexes and characterized by hyperpigmented atrophoderma in a unilateral bandlike distribution along the lines of Blaschko. Since Moulin et al described the condition in 1992, only a few dozen cases have been reported. It has been postulated that linear atrophoderma of Moulin may be due to mosaicism.A 66-year-old man pre-sen-ted with a 46-year his-to-ry of evol-ving tan soft atro-phic con-fluent plaques in a striking-ly Blasch-koid dis-tri-bu-tion, in-vol-ving the left up-per back, shoulder, up-per arm, chest and flank. Ini-tial on-set, at age 20, con-sis-ted of a single mildly pru-ritic pink patch on the left back that was un-res-pon-sive to topical anti-fun-gals. Each new le-sion arose simi-larly as a pink pru-ritic patch, sub-se-quent-ly be-co-ming de-pressed, hy-per-pig-men-ted, and asym-pto-ma-tic over se-ve-ral years. Le-sions were never scaly, firm, or indu-rated. Punch biopsy speci-mens were obtained. The clinical and histo-patho-lo-gi-cal features con-firmed the diagnosis of linear atrophoderma of moulin.Our present case has the characteristic clinical and histopathological features of linear atrophoderma of Moulin, but is the first reported case with mild pruritus at the onset of each new lesion and progressing slowly over 46 years. The lack of any systemic symptoms or other complications in our patient reaffirms the benign nature of this skin disease.

TWO NEW SPECIES OF THE GENUS CAMPTOLOMA (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE) FROM CHINA

Two colorful medium-sized moths, Camptoloma kishidai sp. nov. and C. bella sp. nov., from South China, are described and illustrated. C. kishidai can be recognized from the related species C. carum Kishida, from Taiwan by the reddish yellow-ground color on the forewing upperside, the tornal area without an irregular red pink patch, and by antemedian and postmedian fasciae connected at their lower ends by a longitudinal fascia. C. bella is distinguished from the allied species C. interiorata (Walker) by the characteristics of a reddish patch, and discocellular, antemedian and postmedian fasciae. A key to the species of the genus is supplied. All the type specimens are deposited in the Laboratory of Insect Ecology, South China Agricultural University.

Occurrence of Pink Patch of Perennial Ryegrass Caused by Limonomyces roseipellis in Italy.

In March 1999, an unusual pink gelatinous mycelium was observed on several cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) turf grown in experimental plots in Saint Andrea d'Agliano, Perugia (central Italy). Approximately 50% of the turf area showed symptoms on susceptible varieties. The same symptoms, although with lower severity, were observed during the following year in two experimental fields in northern Italy. The presence of mycelium on infected leaf blades was extensive during periods of high relative humidity and high temperature. The disease decreased progressively when weather conditions became dry and cold. A fungus, characterized by pink colonies, was consistently isolated from leaves of affected plants on potato dextrose agar (pH 5.5). On the basis of the presence of clamp connections and binucleate hyphal cells, the fungus was identified as Limonomyces roseipellis Stalpers & Loerakker, the causal agent of pink patch of turfgrass (1,3). For the pathogenicity test, one isolate of L. roseipellis was grown on maize flour and sand medium (2) at 22 ± 2°C for 14 days. Inoculum (20 g) was added to a sterile mixture of sand and peat moss (1:1; 640 g). Two hundred seeds of L. perenne (cv. Amadeus) were sown in boxes containing infested or noninfested soil as a control. Boxes were kept in a greenhouse at 22 ± 2°C, 80% relative humidity, and 14 h of sunlight per day. Four to five weeks after sowing, typical lesions resembling natural symptoms were observed only on plants grown in inoculum-infested soil, and L. roseipellis was consistently reisolated from diseased plants. Pink patch is probably underestimated in turf since the symptoms are less severe compared with red thread caused by Laetisaria fuciformis (McAlpine) Burdsall, and the development of mycelium of Limonomyces roseipellis is slower.

NEW SPECIES OF NORTH AMERICAN LEPIDOPTERA

Fore wings chrome yellow, a pink patch at base of wing, about 3 mm. wide; this is most marked on costa and between median and submedian veins. A subterminal pinkish band, broad at base, where it is confluent with the pink fringe; at centre is narrow and furthest removed from margin, at inner angle it broadens out, becoming again confluent with fringe. Fringe pink, in one speciment slightly paler inwardly. Hind wings pale yellowish white, firnge concolorous.
