Case 2: Solitary Foot Nodule in a Newborn

Abstract

A term male infant weighing 3.6 kg is born to a 33-year-old gravida 2, para 1 white mother by normal vaginal delivery at 41 1/7 weeks. The prenatal and delivery course was unremarkable. Physical examination at birth shows a small nodule on the plantar aspect of the right foot measuring 1 × 1 × 0.6 cm (Fig 1). The nodule is reddish-brownish in color and firm in consistency, with mild crusting. Also notable are some areas of dry blood over the nodule. On further examination, a pink vascular patch measuring 8 × 4 mm is noted on the right anterior chest. The remainder of the physical examination findings are unremarkable. Complete blood cell count shows a white blood cell count of 12,100/μL (12.1 × 109/L), hemoglobin of 19.1 g/dL (191 g/L), hematocrit of 58.8% (0.58), and platelet count of 306 × 103/μL (306 × 109/L).
