Effects of coagulation pre-treatment on chemical and microbial properties of water-soil-plant systems of constructed wetlands

Chemical coagulation has gained recognition as an effective technique to enhance the removal efficiency of pollutants in wastewater prior to their entry into a constructed wetland (CW) system. However, its potential impact on the chemical and microbial properties of soil and plant systems within CWs requires further research. This study investigated the impact of using ferric chloride (FeCl3) as a pre-treatment stage for dairy wastewater (DWW) on the chemical and microbial properties of water-soil-plant systems of replicated pilot-scale CWs, comparing them to CWs treating untreated DWW. CWs treating amended DWW had better performance than CWs treating raw DWW for all water quality parameters (COD, TSS, TP, and TN), ensuring compliance with the EU wastewater discharge directives. Soil properties remained mostly unaffected except for pH, calcium and phosphorus (P), which were lower in CWs treating amended DWW. As a result of lower nitrogen (N) and P loads, the plants in CWs receiving FeCl3-amended DWW had lower N and P contents than the plants of raw DWW CWs. However, the lower loads of P into amended DWW CWs did not limit the growth of Phragmites australis, which were able to accumulate trace elements higher than CWs receiving raw DWW. Alpha and Beta-diversity analysis revealed minor differences in community richness and composition between both treatments, with only 3.7% (34 genera) showed significant disparities. Overall, the application of chemical coagulation produced superior effluent quality without affecting the properties of soil and plant of CWs or altering the functioning of the microbial community.

Fouling and energy consumption impede electrochemical disinfection of constructed wetland effluents

Electrochemical disinfection (ECD) of constructed wetlands (CWs) effluents via in situ chlorine electrogeneration has been proposed for decentralised water treatment and reclamation. Studies demonstrating the feasibility of continuous ECD of CW effluents in field conditions for several weeks are scarce. Here, a pilot-scale CW was operated for 28 weeks to treat a calcium-rich wastewater stream (131 ± 42 mg L−1) for reclamation. Five electrochemical cell configurations were designed to continuously disinfect the effluent from the pilot-scale CW, differing in the water route, membrane type and catholyte. All configurations inactivated pathogens to levels considered safe for water reclamation. For four configurations, the maximum operating times without maintenance were short (< 1 week) due to calcium-based precipitates inducing membrane and cathode scaling. An additional configuration used rainwater as a cathodic influent for producing an alkaline stream to precipitate mostly calcium carbonate upstream from the ECD system. This avoided premature reactor failure, allowing 21 weeks of operation without apparent scaling. However, the alkaline stream demanded higher charge densities to be neutralised at the anode via water oxidation before a sufficient chlorine evolution. Thus, the flow rate of water treated (1.8 L h−1) was 4.6 times lower than for the other configurations. The resulting energy consumption (5.9 kWh m−3) was considered high for water reclamation. This work illustrates the practical aspects impeding stability and efficiency for ECD of hard waters and highlights possible strategies to deal with adverse scaling.

Effects of the addition of phytohormone and plant growth-promoting bacteria on the health and development of Polygonum hydropiperoides cultivated in constructed wetlands treating chromium-contaminated wastewater

Constructed wetland (CW) systems are used for treating different types of wastewaters, including tannery effluent, which are rich in heavy metals. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential use of Polygonum hydropiperoides and its chromium removal efficiency in CWs treating synthetic tannery wastewater (STW), after the addition of phytohormone auxin and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) Azospirillum brasiliense. We installed and operated nine pilot-scale CWs named as: CWP+B – unit with phytohormone and PGPB; CWP – unit with phytohormone; CWB – unit with PGPB; CWV – vegetated unit, without PGPB and auxin, and CWUV – unvegetated unit. Also, each vegetated CW had a parallel control unit to evaluate plant phytotoxicity. According to the results, all CWs were efficient in chromium removal and there were no significant differences among them. The visual symptoms observed in the aerial parts of the individuals exposed to chromium-rich wastewater were curling, necrosis, chlorosis and senescence of the leaves. The most intense positive detection of cell death occurred in the leaves and roots of the individuals exposed to chromium. In the vegetated wetlands with added phytohormone and PGPB, there were fewer visual damages, lower detection of cell death in the leaves and roots, and an increase in growth and productivity of P. hydropiperoides.

The removal of micropollutants from treated effluent by batch-operated pilot-scale constructed wetlands

Micropollutants (MPs), such as pharmaceuticals and antibiotics, are present in the environment at low concentrations (ng/L-μg/L). A constructed wetland (CW) is a nature-based wastewater treatment technology, which can be used to remove MPs from wastewater treatment plant effluent. This study aimed to improve MP removal of CWs by optimizing the design of batch-operated CW. Three pilot-scale CWs were built to study the effect of two design-features: the use of a support matrix (a mixture of bark and biochar) and continuous aeration. The use of bark-biochar as support matrix increased the removal of 11 of 12 studied MPs compared to the CW filled with conventional material sand. The highest improved removal by the addition of bark-biochar was more than 40% (median) for irbesartan, carbamazepine, hydrochlorothiazide and benzotriazole. Aerating the bed of the bark-biochar CW did not change MP removal. Besides, the presence of bark-biochar also enhanced the removal of total nitrogen during 10 months of operation, but no improvement was observed on the total organic carbon and total phosphorus removal. Considering the application in a batch-operated CW, MP removal can be greatly enhanced by replacing sand with bark-biochar that will act as MP adsorbing matrix.

Use of constructed wetlands to prevent overloading of wastewater treatment plants

The fluctuation in the number of people in tourist areas affects the wastewater quality and quantity. Constructed wetlands (CWs) aim to simulate physical, chemical, and biological processes occurring in natural environments for wastewater treatment and are considered a sustainable system. The current study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of in-vessel CWs for supporting the wastewaters treatment plants in periods of overloading. Such approach can be quickly implementable, economic, and the CWs can be fast regenerated in the framework of sustainable good practices. Three pilot scale CWs were prepared in as many containers layering 10 cm of gravel, 60 cm of sand and 10 cm of gravel, and placing pieces of giant reed rhizomes in the upper layers. The bottom of each CW had a tap, and CWs were irrigated with a real municipal sewage three times a week. Before each new irrigation, the tap was opened, and the effluent collected for determining gross parameters, elemental composition, and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs).CWs significantly reduced almost all gross parameters considered and half the CECs, except for a couple of metabolites of corresponding parental compounds. With regards to the potentially toxic elements, all reduced their concentration from the influents to the effluents.The results of this study were promising and highlighted good efficiency of constructed wetlands as pre-treatment of real municipal sewage to reduce the overloading of the wastewater treatment plant.

Integrated environmental influences quantification of pilot-scale constructed wetlands based on modified ecological footprint assessment

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used for non-point source pollution control and water environmental quality improvement. Though it is effective in water quality improvement under most conditions, the overall impacts on the ecological environment in terms of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions is a growing concern. Besides, large area requirement has limited further applications of the technology in urban areas. A novel assessment tool of integrating grey water footprint into the ecological footprint framework is established for the assessment of pilot-scale CWs. Findings are compared with a natural riparian wetland adjacent to the researched CWs which were monitored simultaneously. Results demonstrated the CWs had relatively good water quality polishing performance, especially for nitrogen removal. Nonetheless, a large amount of CO2 and some CH4 and N2O emissions were recorded. Meanwhile, a substantial amount of CO2 was also sequestrated by wetland plants via photosynthesis. The strong reducing environment of the CWs inhibited CO2 and N2O generation to a great extent. Calculation of all gaseous emissions and sequestration in CO2 equivalents demonstrated that CWs are an efficient carbon sink. By contrast, the natural wetland was a carbon source because of the high emission of CO2 and N2O under its weak reducing environment conditions and low gross primary production. The carbon footprints of the constructed and natural wetlands were −24.24 and 12.99 gha respectively. Modified ecological footprint values were determined by integrating the carbon footprint, water footprint and build-up lands footprint, and a value of −24.36 gha was obtained for the CWs and 12.99 gha for the natural wetlands. The results indicated that the CWs had substantial beneficial impacts on the ecological environment. On account of the multifunctional service values provided by the CWs, a typical paradigm for water pollution remediation and carbon sequestration was presented for ecological and environmental governance, especially for riparian areas.

Pyraclostrobin Removal in Pilot-Scale Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands and in Porous Media Filters

Pyraclostrobin is a fungicide extensively used for the control of various fungal diseases and is frequently detected in environmental samples. Natural systems, such as constructed wetlands (CWs) and gravity filters, are effective and environmentally friendly treatment systems, which can reduce or eliminate pesticides from the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the capacity of two pilot-scale CWs (porous media: cobbles and fine gravel, planted with Phragmites australis) and six gravity filters (filling material: bauxite, carbonate gravel and zeolite) to remove pyraclostrobin from polluted water originating from spraying equipment rinsing sites. For this, experiments were conducted to test the performance of the above natural systems in removing this fungicide. The results showed that the mean percent pyraclostrobin removal efficiencies for cobbles and fine gravel CW units were 56.7% and 75.2%, respectively, and the mean percent removals for HRTs of 6 and 8 days were 68.7% and 62.8%, respectively. The mean removal efficiencies for the bauxite, carbonate gravel and zeolite filter units were 32.5%, 36.7% and 61.2%, respectively, and the mean percent removals for HRTs 2, 4 and 8 days were 39.9%, 43.4% and 44.1%, respectively. Regarding the feeding strategy, the mean removal values of pyraclostrobin in gravity filter units were 43.44% and 40.80% for continuous and batch feeding, respectively. Thus, these systems can be used in rural areas for the treatment of spraying equipment rinsing water.

Impact of influent strengths on nitrous oxide emission and its molecular mechanism in constructed wetlands treating swine wastewater

Constructed wetlands (CWs) can remove nitrogen (N) through plant assimilation and microbial nitrification and denitrification, while it also releases large greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) into the atmosphere. However, N2O emissions and the underlying microbial mechanisms of CWs when treating high-strength wastewater have not been systematically surveyed. Here, the effect of three influent strengths on N2O emissions in a pilot-scale CW treatment of swine wastewater was determined and the underlying microbial mechanisms were explored. The results showed that the removal rates of ammonium (NH4+) and total nitrogen (TN) increased significantly with the increasing influent strengths, however, the ratio of N2O emission/TN removal rose by 1.5 times at the same time. Quantitation of microorganisms responsible for N-cycle in the sediment indicated that the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in high influent strengths (COD, 962.38 ± 3.05 mg/L; NH4+, 317.89 ± 4.24 mg/L) was 51.6-fold compared with that in low influent strengths (COD, 516.94 ± 4.18 mg/L; NH4+, 100.65 ± 2.65), and AOB gradually replaced ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) to dominate ammonia oxidizers. Structural equation models demonstrated that NO2− accumulations promoted the ratio of AOB/AOA, which further led to an increase in the ratio of N2O emission/TN removal. It is worth noting both the N removal rates and N2O emissions increased with the increasing influent strength. To obtain reduced N2O emissions, pretreatment technology for strength reduction should be supplemented before high-strength wastewater enters the CWs. This study may shed new light on the sustainable operation and application of CWs.

Removal of Emerging Pollutants in Horizontal Subsurface Flow and Vertical Flow Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetlands

We assessed constructed wetland (CW) performance in the removal of six emerging pollutants (EPs) from university campus wastewater. The EPs considered were: diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP), bis(2-ehtylxexyl) phthalate (DEHP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and caffeine (CAF). Six pilot-scale CWs, i.e., three horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) and three vertical flow (VF), with different design configurations were used: two types of plants and one unplanted for both the HSF and the VF, two hydraulic retention times (HRT) for the HSF, and two wastewater feeding strategies for the VF units. The results showed that the median removals in the three HSF-CWs ranged between 84.3 and 99.9%, 79.0 and 95.7%, 91.4 and 99.7%, 72.2 and 81.0%, 99.1 and 99.6%, and 99.3 and 99.6% for DEP, DIBP, DNOP, DEHP, TCPP, and CAF, respectively. In the three VF-CWs, the median removal efficiencies range was 98.6–99.4%, 63.6–98.0%, 96.6–97.8%, 73.6–94.5%, 99.3–99.5% and 94.4–96.3% for DEP, DIBP, DNOP, DEHP, TCPP and CAF, respectively. The study indicates that biodegradation and adsorption onto substrate were the most prevalent removal routes of the target EPs in CWs.

Unveiling the role of sediments in phosphorus removal in pilot-scale constructed wetlands for swine wastewater treatment

The accumulation rate, fractions, and sorption capacity of phosphorus in sediments determine the removal efficiency and service life of constructed wetlands (CWs). Nine pilot-scale three-stage surface flow CWs were constructed to treat three loading rates of lagoon-pretreated swine wastewater, and surface sediment samples at initial and one-year treatment were collected to analyze the phosphorus fractions and sorption capacity. After one-year treatment, concentration of total phosphorus (TP) in sediments increased for high loading rates of wastewater, but remained stable for low loading rates. The annual accumulation rate of TP in sediments (Ma) was −43–445 mg kg−1 yr−1 at surface loading rate (SLR) of 36–355 g P m−2 yr−1. Their association could be described well using a sigmoid model, i.e., Ma = −23 + 538/(1 + exp.(−(SLR–262)/48)) (R2adj = 0.897, RMSE = 40.8, p < 0.01), indicating that the phosphorus accumulation rates in sediments were loading rate-dependent. The sum of inorganic phosphorus fractions contributed to 80–100% of the TP concentration, and accumulation of aluminum-bound phosphorus (AlP) and iron-bound phosphorus (FeP) was responsible for variability of TP concentration in sediments. Phosphorus sorption capacity of CW1 sediments increased by 1.3–1.8 times, attributed to increased pH, and concentrations of ammonium oxalate-extractable aluminum and iron in sediments due to the wastewater input. Selecting iron and aluminum-rich materials preferentially as substrates and regulating the ratio of metal ions to phosphorus in wastewater should be alternative enhancement strategies of CWs for phosphorus removal.

Improving the quality of stabilization pond effluents using hybrid constructed wetlands

Water shortage and excessive use of water resources in arid and semi-arid regions, such as Iran, highlights the importance of using treated wastewater, especially for the highly demanding agricultural sector. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are among green technologies that offer an efficient and cost-effective wastewater treatment. This study investigates the complementary treatment of effluent from the Fooladshahr wastewater treatment plant, Isfahan, Iran, using pilot-scale CWs with horizontal (H-CW) and horizontal-vertical flow (HV-CW). The performance of two substrates, pumice and gravel, and the effect of using plants (Phragmites australis) was compared. Maximum removal efficiencies of total suspended solids (TSS) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) were observed in the case of unplanted and planted HV-CW with pumice bed, respectively. In the case of gravel bed, planted H-CWs demonstrated maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency. The highest mean outflow concentrations for TSS, BOD5 and COD were obtained in unplanted H-CW with pumice bed, likely due to shorter retention times compared to HV-CWs, as well as due to the absence of plants providing the required physicochemical and biological conditions for high performance treatment. Phosphate (PO43−) removal efficiency demonstrated seasonal dependency, where the highest values were obtained in warm seasons. In the case of fecal coliforms (FC), no significant differences were observed between the studied HV-CWs during the whole study period. Based on our results, planted H-CW with gravel bed provided an optimum removal efficiency while requiring a smaller footprint and lower expenditure than HV-CWs. This study demonstrates the application of CWs as an affordable solution for treating domestic wastewater for various reuse application in developing countries with water crisis, such as Iran.

Pilot-scale two-stage constructed wetlands based on novel solid carbon for rural wastewater treatment in southern China: Enhanced nitrogen removal and mechanism

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been proved to be an alternative to the treatment of various wastewater. However, there are few studies focused on the removal performance and mechanisms of pollutants in pilot-scale CWs packed with novel solid carbon. In this study, we investigated the effect of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate/polyacetic acid (PHBV/PLA) blends as carbon source on pollutant's transformation, microbial communities and functional genes in pilot-scale aeration-anoxic two-stage CWs for polishing rural runoff in southern China. Results showed a striking improvement of TN removal in CWs with PHBV/PLA blends (64.5%) compared to that in CWs with ceramsite (52.9%). NH4+-N (61.3–64.6%), COD (40.4–53.8%) and TP (43.6–47.1%) were also removed effectively in both two CWs. In addition, the strains of Rhodocyclaceae and Bacteroidetes were the primary denitrifiers on the surface of PHBV/PLA blends. Further, the aerobic stage induced gathering of 16 S and amoA genes and the anoxic zone with PHBV/PLA blends increased the nirS genes, which fundamentally explained the better denitrification performance in CW based on PHBV/PLA blends. Consequently, this study will provide straightforward guidance for the operation of engineering CWs packed with polymers to govern the low-C/N rural wastewater.

The performance of Pilot-scale Constructed Wetland for treating Stormwater

Constructed wetlands (CW) have been recognized as one of the environmental friendly technologies and successfully used for treating a diverse range of wastewaters. CW also suitable for native wetland plants and associated fauna habitat. In an urban environment likes university campus, a constructed wetland can provide as an educational and attractive green space for learning, teaching and research activities. This work focused on the performance of pilot-scale constructed wetlands as a sustainable wastewater treatment for treating and reusing the stormwater in the mini-reservoir situated in campus area. In this study, there were two tanks of pilot-scale CW with vertical subsurface flow (VSF) and horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) systems. Both was planted with the Cat-tail Typha Angustifolia and Tube Sedge in removal of total suspended solid (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) of the stormwater in the mini-reservoir in campus. The CW without any plants referred as a control system. The results show that the CW with vertical subsurface flow (VSF) system able to remove all parameters better that horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) system. The highest percentage of removal of all parameters was at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 hours and percentage of removal increased with an increase in HRT. The percentage of removal for total suspended solid (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) approximately 85%, 70%, 68% and 25%. Thus, the constructed wetland had the potential to increase the waste water quality level.

Benzotriazole removal mechanisms in pilot-scale constructed wetlands treating cooling tower water

The reuse of discharged cooling tower water (CTW) in the cooling tower itself could reduce fresh water intake and help mitigating fresh water scarcity problems. However, this requires desalination prior to its reuse, and hindering fractions, such as conditioning chemicals, should be removed before desalination to obtain a higher desalination efficiency. Constructed wetlands (CWs) can provide such a pre-treatment. In this study, the mechanisms underlying the removal of conditioning chemical benzotriazole (BTA) in CWs was studied using an innovative approach of differently designed pilot–scale CWs combined with batch removal experiments with substrate from these CWs. By performing these combined experiments, it was possible to determine the optimal CW design for BTA removal and the most relevant BTA removal processes in CWs. Adsorption yielded the highest contribution, and the difference in removal between different CW types was linked to their capability to aerobically biodegrade BTA. This knowledge on the main removal mechanisms for BTA allows for a CW design tailored for BTA removal. In addition, the outcomes of this research show that performing batch experiments with CW substrate allows one to determine the relevant removal mechanisms for a given compound which results in a better understanding of CW removal processes.

Fate of antibiotics from swine wastewater in constructed wetlands with different flow configurations

The removal efficiencies and accumulated concentrations of oxytetracycline and ciprofloxacin in three pilot-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) with different flow configurations (surface, horizontal subsurface, and vertical subsurface flow) were investigated. The results indicated that the average mass removal efficiencies of the CWs for the target antibiotics in one year of treatment ranged from 85 to 99%, and the vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands exhibited the highest and most stable removal efficiencies for oxytetracycline (99 ± 0.27%) and ciprofloxacin (97 ± 0.26%). The influence of seasonal changes on the removal efficiencies of oxytetracycline and ciprofloxacin in CWs was insignificant. The higher accumulated antibiotic concentrations and antibiotic-degrading bacteria abundances indicated that substrate adsorption and biodegradation were the predominant pathways affecting the antibiotic removal efficiency of wetlands. The concentration of accumulated ciprofloxacin in soil and oyster shell (84–124 and 83–115 μg kg−1) was significantly higher than that of oxytetracycline (37–81 and 3–17 μg kg−1). In addition, analysis results based on pilot-scale CWs also indicated that the influence of the type of CW on the bacterial community was more significant than the wetland substrate and residual concentration of antibiotics.

Investigation of flow dynamics of wastewater in a pilot-scale constructed wetland using radiotracer technique

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are used for the treatment of wastewater by natural processes. Knowledge of the flow dynamics of wastewater through the CWs is required to evaluate their performance, operation and design. The residence time distribution (RTD) approach was used to evaluate the above-mentioned parameters in a CW. The RTD of wastewater flowing through a pilot-scale CW was measured using Technetium-99 m (99mTc) as a radiotracer. The measured data were analyzed, and mean residence time and stagnant volumes were quantified under different operating conditions. A plug flow component in series along with a tank-in-series model with an exchange between the active and dead zones was used to simulate the measured RTD curves and investigate the flow dynamics of the flowing wastewater. The results of the study showed that the optimum flow rate and wastewater level in the CW was 2.3 m3/s and 0.6 m, respectively. Moreover, the results of the study will help in the operation and design of the existing wetland and design of new wetlands.

Role of Colocasia esculenta L. schott in arsenic removal by a pilot-scale constructed wetland filled with laterite soil

The role of plant Colocasia esculenta L. schott (C. esculenta) in arsenic removal was investigated in a pilot-scale constructed wetland (PCW), which was filled with laterite soil (19.90–28.25% iron by weight). This PCW consists of 2 sets of flow systems in parallel, with C. esculenta planted at a density of 20 plants/m2 in one system and the other without any plants. The synthetic water containing arsenic concentration of 0.50 mg/l, with its pH controlled at 7.0 and influent flow at 1.5 m3/day. With C. esculenta, the arsenic in water decreased from 0.485 mg/l to 0.054 mg/l (89% removal), whereas, without C. esculenta, the arsenic decreased from 0.485 mg/l to 0.233 mg/l (52% removal). As for the fate of the influent arsenic, the C. esculenta was responsible for 65% of arsenic accumulation. Note that the arsenic was found mostly within the root zone depth (20–40 cm). It appears that such a high capacity of arsenic removal was enhanced both by the plants through rhizostabilization and by the iron-adsorbed process within the laterite soil bed. In addition, the arsenic removal was observed to increase along with the time from 30 to 90 days, and it reached to a maximum removal around 90 days, and then decreased after 122 days. Thus, the arsenic removal efficiency including mechanisms founded can then be applied in designing of constructed wetland for arsenic treatment from gold mine drainage with similar site/soil characteristic.

Myriophyllum aquaticum-Based Surface Flow Constructed Wetlands for Enhanced Eutrophic Nutrient Removal—A Case Study from Laboratory-Scale up to Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland

Water pollution caused by various eutrophic nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), such as outbreaks of eutrophication in rivers and lakes, has become a serious environmental problem in China. Such problems have spurred extensive studies aiming at finding environmentally friendly solutions. Various constructed wetlands (CWs), planted with different macrophytes, have been considered as environmentally safe technologies to treat various wastewaters for several decades. Due to their low energy and operational requirements, CWs are promising alternative solutions to water eutrophication problems. Within the CWs, macrophytes, sediments, and the microbial community are indispensable constituents of such an ecosystem. In this study, a laboratory-scale surface flow CW (LSCW) was constructed to investigate the effects of two different plants, Eichhornia (E.) crassipes (Mart.) Solms and Myriophyllum (M.) aquaticum, on the removal of eutrophic N and P. The results showed that both plants could significantly reduce these nutrients, especially ammonium (NH4+), and LSCW planted with M. aquaticum performed better (82.1% NH4+ removal) than that with E. crassipes (66.4% NH4+ removal). A Monod model with a plug flow pattern was used to simulate the relationship of influent and effluent concentrations with the kinetic parameters of this LSCW. Based on the model, a pilot-scale surface flow CW (PSCW) was designed, aiming to further enhance N and P removal. The treatment with M. aquaticum and polyethylene materials showed the best removal efficiency on NH4+ as well as on total nitrogen and phosphorus. In general, the enlarged PSCW can be a promising solution to the eutrophication problems occurring in aquatic environments.

Integrated perspectives on the use of bacterial endophytes in horizontal flow constructed wetlands for the treatment of liquid textile effluent: Phytoremediation advances in the field

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have emerged as cost-effective and sustainable treatment systems for the remediation of industrial wastewaters; nevertheless, their potential has mostly been evaluated in laboratory-scale studies. Likewise, endophytic bacteria can enhance plant growth and reduce phytotoxicity under polluted conditions, but their application with pilot-scale CWs has rarely been evaluated. The present study aims to evaluate on-site performance of endophyte-assisted pilot-scale horizontal flow constructed wetlands (HFCWs) for the remediation of effluent from a textile industry. The HFCWs were established by planting Leptochloa fusca in the presence of three endophytic bacterial strains with dye degrading, and plant growth promoting capabilities. We found that the system was able to remove a significant proportion of both organic and inorganic pollutants. Maximum reduction of pollutants was observed in endophyte-augmented HFCWs, where the COD and BOD reduced from 493 to 70 mg l−1 and 190 to 42 mg l−1, respectively, within 48 h. Additionally, survival of endophytic bacteria in different components of the HFCWs was also recorded. Treated wastewater was found to be non-toxic and the inoculated bacteria showed persistence in the wastewater as well as rhizo- and endosphere of L. fusca. Accordingly, a positive impact on plant growth was observed in the presence of bacterial augmentation. The system performance was comparable to the vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) as high nutrients reduction was seen in the presence of this partnership. This pilot-scale study is a step forward toward the field-scale application of phytoremediation coupled with bacterial endophytes as a cost-effective means of on-site wastewater remediation. To the best of our knowledge, this is among the first pilot-scale studies on use of HFCWs for improvement in quality of textile industry effluent as most previous studies are limited either in the context of engineering or lack effective interplay of plant and bacteria.

Characterization of Microbial Communities in Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetlands with Salicornia for Treatment of Marine Aquaculture Effluents.

Microorganisms play an essential role in the performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) for wastewater treatment. However, there has been limited discussion on the characteristics of microbial communities in CWs for treatment of effluents from marine recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). This study is aimed at characterizing the microbial communities of pilot-scale CWs with Salicornia bigelovii for treatment of saline wastewater from a land-based Atlantic salmon RAS plant located in Northern China. Illumina high-throughput sequencing was employed to identify the profile of microbial communities of three CWs receiving wastewater under different total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentrations. Results of this study showed remarkable spatial variations in diversity and composition of microbial communities between roots and substrates in three CWs, with distinct response to different TAN concentrations. In particular, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were predominant in roots, while Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia, and Bacteroidetes were prevalent in substrates. Moreover, redundancy analysis indicated that specific functional genera, such as Nitrosopumilus, Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, Nitrospina, and Planctomyces, played key roles in the removal of nitrogen/phosphorus pollutants and growth of wetland plants. From a microorganism perspective, the findings of this study could contribute to better understanding of contaminants' removal mechanism and improved management of CWs for treatment of effluents from land-based marine aquaculture.
