High-Entropy Boride HfZrTiTaMoB: Promising Materials for Solar Selective Absorption Coatings in Photothermal Applications.

High-entropy borides (HEBs), as a category of high-entropy materials, exhibit remarkable thermal stability, a broad compositional range, and finely tuned electronic structures, leading to an excellent functional performance. Despite these advantages, their application in photothermal materials has rarely been reported. Herein, we employ a HEB target with multiple transition-metal elements to develop solar selective absorption coatings (SSACs) with simple and scalable bilayer structures for photothermal applications. The performance of these coatings is enhanced by designing different antireflective layers. The designed SSACs, both stainless steel (SS)/HEB/Al2O3 and SS/HEB/Si3N4, exhibit high absorptivity and low thermal emittance (α/ε = 90.0%/8.6% and 91.6%/8.6% at 82 °C). Thermal stability tests show that the absorbers could withstand annealing at 500 °C for 5 h, while maintaining a good optical performance. Long-term thermal stability tests indicate that the coatings retained good spectral selectivity after annealing at 400 °C for 100 h. Notably, the coatings demonstrate advanced photothermal conversion efficiencies of 88.3% and 89.9%, respectively, at 400 °C under 100 sun. In practical simulated solar irradiation experiments, the absorber achieves temperatures of about 85 °C under 1 sun, surpassing the performance of commercial nonselective absorbing coatings. Additionally, the absorbers maintained a stable photothermal performance through six on-off cycle experiments. In summary, the designed SSACs based on HEBs exhibit excellent optical properties and efficient photothermal conversion at moderate temperatures. This study highlights the significant benefits and potential advancements in solar energy collection offered by HEB-based SSACs.

De novo strategy of organic semiconducting polymer brushes for NIR-II light-triggered carbon monoxide release to boost deep-tissue cancer phototheranostics.

The integration of photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and photothermal therapy (PTT) within the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window, offering a combination of high-resolution imaging and precise non-invasive thermal ablation, presents an attractive opportunity for cancer treatment. Despite the significant promise, the development of this noninvasive phototheranostic nanomedicines encounters challenges that stem from tumor thermotolerance and limited therapeutic efficacy. In this contribution, we designed an amphiphilic semiconducting polymer brush (SPB) featuring a thermosensitive carbon monoxide (CO) donor (TDF-CO) for NIR-II PAI-assisted gas-augmented deep-tissue tumor PTT. TDF-CO nanoparticles (NPs) exhibited a powerful photothermal conversion efficiency (43.1%) and the capacity to trigger CO release after NIR-II photoirradiation. Notably, the liberated CO not only acts on mitochondria, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and promoting cellular apoptosis but also hinders the overexpression of heat shock proteins (HSPs), enhancing the tumor's thermosensitivity to PTT. This dual action accelerates cellular thermal ablation, achieving a gas-augmented synergistic therapeutic effect in cancer treatment. Intravenous administration of TDF-CO NPs in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice demonstrated bright PAI signals and remarkable tumor ablation under 1064nm laser irradiation, underscoring the potential of CO-mediated photothermal/gas synergistic therapy. We envision this tailor-made multifunctional NIR-II light-triggered SPB provides a feasible approach to amplify the performance of PTT for advancing future cancer phototheranostics.

Light‐Manipulated Millimeter‐Scale Swimming Robot for Precise Navigation

AbstractMicro‐swimming robots have been increasingly emphasized in the fields of targeted drug delivery and water surface cleaning, which mainly use open external structures or external environments to assist navigation, but there are still salient problems, such as the difficulty of stable capture and poor navigation accuracy. Theoretically, a light‐driven swimming robot can have a symmetrical embedded structure to constrain surface tension gradient forces and thermophoretic forces in a wide range of directions and convert them into precise directional forces. Therefore, a sustained‐capture swimming robot is developed with precise navigation consisting of TiO2/polypyrrole (PPy) composites containing a symmetric inner truncated‐cone hole structure and realized multiple controllable motion patterns. Excitingly, the capture motion of the TiO2/PPy inner truncated‐cone hole structure robot “TPHR” can be accurately controlled by programmable automation, with capture travel speeds of up to ≈23.64 mm s−1. Its excellent kinematic performance stems from the high photothermal conversion efficiency (≈47.83%) of the composite and the synergistic effect between thermo‐capillary and thermo‐convective flows. Furthermore, a patterning precision movement, water surface oil‐cleaning microstructure assembly, etc. are realized, reflecting the engineering application value of TPHR. This structure provides a novel strategy for the development of micro‐swimming robots with stable capture and sustainable motion.

Synergistic Phototherapy Using Zwitterionic Crystalline Nanoaggregates of Orthogonal Donor–Acceptor Small‐Molecule Dyads

AbstractDeveloping nanophotosensitizer (nanoPS) for synergistic phototherapy by leveraging the aggregation of small‐molecule dyes is compelling frontier in precision medicine, but challenges remain due to the limited understanding of the interactions between molecular structure, assembly behavior, and theranostic function. Here, the concept of “spin‐orbit charge‐transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT‐ISC) in crystalline aggregates” is introduced, which significantly enhances photodynamic (PD) and photothermal (PT) properties of small‐molecule‐based nanoPS. Specifically, a cationic pyridine (Py) group is incorporated at the meso‐position of a tricyanofuran (TCF)‐containing anionic heptamethine cyanine (TCF‐Cy7‐TCF) dye to construct an orthogonal charge‐transfer dyad (TCF‐Cy7(Py)‐TCF), boosting triplet state formation through SOCT‐ISC mechanism to enhance the PD properties. Remarkably, the zwitterion moieties impart TCF‐Cy7(Py)‐TCF with high crystallinity even at ultralow concentrations, dictating its stacking behavior within aggregates and enhancing both PT and PD properties. The TCF‐Cy7(Py)‐TCF nanoaggregates exhibit superior singlet oxygen quantum yield (0.8% vs 0.2%) and photothermal conversion efficiency (55.06% vs 7.78%) compared to TCF‐Cy7‐TCF. Impressively, TCF‐Cy7(Py)‐TCF preferentially accumulates at tumor sites, yielding high signal‐to‐background ratios for tumor imaging in NIR‐I and NIR‐II windows, with minimal nonspecific binding. Finally, in vivo experiments confirm TCF‐Cy7(Py)‐TCF nanoaggregates function as nanoPS for synergistic phototherapy, offering a simple yet effective strategy to design single‐component PS for clinical translation.

Alternating Donor-Acceptor Ladder-Type Heteroarene for Efficient Photothermal Conversion via Boosting Non-Radiative Decay.

The development of novel ladder-type conjugated molecules is crucial for advancing supramolecular chemistry and material science. In this study, we report a straightforward synthesis of new alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) ladder-type heteroarene, FCDTDPP, and demonstrate its application as photothermal agent for imaging and cancer therapy. FCDTDPP is constructed by vinylene bridge between cyclopentadithiophene (D) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (A) through intramolecular Friedel-Crafts type reaction. FCDTDPP exhibits unique combination of good molecular planarity, efficient intra/inter-molecular mixed D-A interactions, and local aromaticity. These features collectively contribute to its broad and intense absorptions with narrow bandgap in red band of the spectra, coupled with multiple vibrational absorption feature, thereby enhancing non-radiative decay process and resulting in efficient photothermal conversion property. FCDTDPP and its nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit superior photothermal conversion performance and stability under 660 nm laser irradiation. Moreover, in vitro studies reveal that FCDTDPP NPs possess excellent biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and robust photothermal therapeutic efficacy, a finding further corroborated by preliminary in vivo experiments in tumor-bearing mice. This work charts a novel course for the molecular engineering of organic photothermal conversion systems, propelling relevant research forward.

High‐Performance Infrared Scene Generation Using a Double‐S Microbridge Photothermal Film Emitter With Ultralarge Array

AbstractInfrared emitters are highly desirable for applications in infrared imaging and stealth technology. Photothermal film emitters, which are driven by light, have garnered considerable interest due to their excellent photothermal properties and ease of fabrication. However, existing photothermal films often suffer from low photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) and limited array scale. Here, a photothermal film emitter featuring a double‐S microbridge structure is presented, which comprehensively considering the PCE and frame rate. Initially, Si microbridges are fabricated within each microstructure to support the photothermal film. The pattern structure is then arranged into a double‐S configuration to manipulate the thermal conductivity. By optimizing the length and width of the double‐S pattern, high PCE and fast frame rates are achieved. The double‐S microbridge structure photothermal film emitter is fabricated with a 4‐inch diameter, forming an ultra‐large array with over 3000 × 3000 pixels. The absorption and photothermal conversion characteristics are studied, revealing a maximum temperature of 582.70 K and a highest PCE of 16.32%. Time‐dependent photothermal response demonstrated the emitter's rapid heat storage and release capabilities. Additionally, an infrared scene generator is realized. These results position the photothermal film emitter as a promising solution for infrared imaging and dynamic scene generation.

Facile Synthesis of Fe‐Based Metal‐Quinone Networks for Mutually Enhanced Mild Photothermal Therapy and Ferroptosis

AbstractMild photothermal therapy (MPTT) has emerged as a promising therapeutic modality for attenuating thermal damage to the normal tissues surrounding tumors, while the heat‐induced upregulation of heat shock proteins (HSPs) greatly compromises the curative efficacy of MPTT by increasing cellular thermo‐tolerance. Ferroptosis has been identified to suppress the overexpression of HSPs by the accumulation of lipid peroxides and reactive oxygen species (ROS), but is greatly restricted by overexpressed glutathione (GSH) in tumor microenvironment and undesirable ROS generation efficiency. Herein, a synergistic strategy based on the mutual enhancement of MPTT and ferroptosis is proposed for cleaving HSPs to recover tumor cell sensitivity. A facile method for fabricating a series of Fe‐based metal‐quinone networks (MQNs) by coordinated assembly is proposed and the representative FTP MQNs possess high photothermal conversion efficiency (69.3 %). Upon 808 nm laser irradiation, FTP MQNs not only trigger effective MPTT to induce apoptosis but more significantly, potentiate Fenton reaction and marked GSH consumption to boost ferroptosis, and the reinforced ferroptosis effect in turn can alleviate the thermal resistance by declining the HSP70 defense and reducing ATP levels. This study provides a valuable rationale for constructing a large library of MQNs for achieving mutual enhancement of MPTT and ferroptosis.

Near-Infrared Light-Responsive Cu2MoS4@GelMA Hydrogel with Photothermal Therapy, Antibacterial Effect and Bone Immunomodulation for Accelerating Infection Elimination and Fracture Healing.

Managing fracture infections is a significant challenge in trauma orthopedics, given the limited self-healing capacity of fractures and the difficulty in eradicating infections. In this study, Cu2MoS4 nanoparticles (CMSs) with are prepared enzyme-like activity and both pH and near-infrared (NIR) light responsiveness. These CMSs are combined with methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) to synthesize CMSs hydrogels (CMSs@Gel) with antimicrobial and bone tissue repair-promoting capabilities. In vitro and in vivo experiments, the CMSs@Gel demonstrated good biocompatibility; peroxidase-like (POD), oxidase-like (OXD), and catalase-like (CAT) activities; excellent photothermal conversion efficiency; and immunomodulatory capacity. Furthermore, the CMSs@Gel exhibited slow degradation, enabling it to exert different pH-responsive enzyme activities and modulate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the polarization of macrophages throughout the treatment process. Notably, these effects are significantly enhanced under near-infrared (NIR) light. Additionally, under NIR irradiation, the CMSs@Gel maintained the fracture environment at a mild temperature (40-42°C), promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis. In summary, the CMSs@Gel enhances bactericidal activity during fracture infection and effectively promotes fracture healing after infection control, providing long-term therapeutic effects. This study offers a robust theoretical basis for the staged and long-term treatment of fracture infections in the future.

Enhancing Strawberry Freshness: Multifunction Sustainable Films Utilizing Two Types of Modified Carbon Nanotubes for Photothermal Food Packaging.

Currently, antimicrobial films with stable and efficient antibacterial activities are receiving considerable attention in the food packaging industry. Herein, a chemically/physically linked konjac glucomannan-sodium alginate (KGM-SA)@carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/Fe3+ composite film with outstanding resistance to ultraviolet radiation, oxidation, and bacteria, as well as excellent photothermal effects and mechanical properties, was successfully prepared using a solvent flow method. Tannic acid-modified carboxyl-functionalized CNTs (TCCNTs), l-cysteine-modified carboxyl-functionalized CNTs (LCCNTs), and Fe3+ were incorporated into the prepared film. The film structure of KGM-SA@CNTs/Fe3+ was characterized using various methods, confirming the formation of a dual-cross-linked network through metal-coordination bonds and hydrogen bonding. This unique structure endowed the film with excellent water vapor permeability (3.58 g mm/m2 day kPa), water resistance (water contact angle = 93.66°), and thermal stability. Further, the film exhibited outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency and stability under near-infrared irradiation (300 mW/cm2) as well as excellent bactericidal properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, achieving a bacterial inhibition rate of >99%. In a strawberry preservation experiment, the KGM-SA@CNTs/Fe3+ composite film exhibited remarkable preservation effects, extending the shelf life of strawberries by 4-6 d. Thus, this photothermal antibacterial film offers a new approach for the application of CNTs in food packaging.

Multistimuli-Responsive Soft Actuators with Controllable Bionic Motions.

Soft actuators with biomimetic self-regulatory intelligence have garnered significant scientific interest due to their potential applications in robotics and advanced functional devices. We present a multistimuli-responsive actuator made from a carbon nitride/carbon nanotube (CN/CNTs) composite film. This film features a molecular switch based on reversible hydrogen bonds, whose asymmetric distribution endows the film with the ability to absorb water unevenly and convert molecular motion into macroscopic movement. By incorporating carboxylated CNTs, the film demonstrates improved mechanical properties and actuation performance. Under ambient humidity stimuli, the actuator can autonomously generate walking and tumbling motions. The CN/CNTs composite film's actuating behaviors are programmable, enabling diverse deformation modes and complex biomimetic movements. Additionally, the film exhibits excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (74.10 °C/s), allowing for temperature and light-responsive actuation, which can be remotely controlled in real time. These features have enabled the creation of soft robots capable of complex biomimetic actions such as jumping, directional movement, and transporting objects. This research broadens the potential applications of CN-based actuators and paves the way for the development of intelligent soft robots.

Nanoarchitecture via Synchronic Stacking of Metallic and Nonmetallic Two-Dimensional Nanosheets for Optimal Light-Driven Ion Transport.

The exceptional selectivity and responsive ion transport in biological channels inspire technology breakthrough in energy, environmental, and resource sectors. However, existing nanofluidic systems with a high photothermal conversion efficiency often exhibit excessive thermal conductivity, which impedes the creation of effective temperature gradients and results in a low ion transport efficiency. In this study, a strategy based on the synchronic stacking of metallic and nonmetallic two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets was presented to construct heterogeneous nanofluidic channels. This specific nanoconfined architecture sustained high temperatures in the illuminated area while maintaining low temperatures in the nonilluminated area, thus obtaining a robust driving force from sunlight for directional ion transport. As a result, our light-responsive ion transport system demonstrated significant potential in solar energy conversion and osmotic energy harvesting, surpassing those of all previously reported nanofluidic systems. Additionally, although it is still at the proof-of-concept stage, it shows great promise in light signal monitoring. This work provides an effective strategy for developing advanced light-responsive ion transport systems and their important applications.

Donor Substitution Engineering of Hemicyanine Nanoparticles to Reprogram the Tumor Microenvironment and Enhance Fn14‐Targeted BiTE for Glioblastoma Photoimmunotherapy

AbstractGlioblastoma (GBM) is a highly malignant intracranial tumor with limited treatment options. Bispecific T‐cell engagers (BiTEs) are being explored for GBM treatment, but their success is hindered by inadequate T cell infiltration and activation due to the acidic and immunosuppressive microenvironment. Photothermal immunotherapy lyses tumors and activates immune responses, complementing BiTEs. This study innovatively employs a donor engineering strategy to develop hemicyanine dyes (Hcys) that emit from near‐infrared (NIR) I to NIR II. The Hcy with excellent properties is encapsulated in an amphiphilic micelle, forming a nano assembly with lactate oxidase (PLH1100). PLH1100 exhibits spectral absorption at 980 nm, a photothermal conversion efficiency of 58.7%, and capability for NIR‐II tumor imaging. Besides photothermal tumor ablation, PLH1100 regulates lactic acid metabolism and activates immunogenic cell death, improving the tumor microenvironment and promoting T cell infiltration and activation. Further studies demonstrate PLH1100 effectively kills human and murine GBM cells, inhibits orthotopic U87 tumor growth in BALB/c‐nu mice, and enhances the efficacy of Fn14‐targeted BiTE in orthotopic GL261 tumors in C57BL/6 mice, achieving a synergistic “1+1>2” therapeutic effect. Collectively, this work opens a new pathway for using Hcy‐based molecules combined with BiTE drugs for GBM therapy, with significant clinical potential.

Near-infrared modulated photothermal/nanozymatic dual-modal strategy for combating cancer via molybdenum selenide nanourchins

BackgroundBreast cancer, a major health concern globally, often faces challenges in the non-invasive elimination of cancer cells. This has prompted researchers to explore alternative strategies, such as photothermal therapy (PTT), which takes advantage of the location of breast cancer lesions. Additionally, the tumor microenvironment with high hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) provides a key prerequisite for treating tumors with nanozymes, especially those with peroxidase (POD)-like activity. However, the overexpression of TrxR1, which maintains redox homeostasis in tumor cells, limits reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based cytotoxic therapy. This study aims to present molybdenum selenide nano urchins (MoSe2 NUs) with excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, POD-like activity and selective inhibition of TrxR1 to achieve photothermal enhanced nanocatalytic therapy for combating breast cancer.MethodsThe characterization of MoSe2 NUs synthesized by the hydrothermal method was identified by TEM, XRD, Zeta potential and DLS. Whether MoSe2 NUs in conjunction with NIR possessed POD-like activities or not was identified via a TMB colorimetric method. The photothermal characteristics of MoSe2 NUs excited by near-infrared were recorded by an infrared thermal imaging camera. The antitumor effect of MoSe2 NUs was detected by cell death staining, apoptosis assay and animal experiments. TrxR1 and apoptosis-related protein expression were identified by Western blot and Immunohistochemistry.ResultsMoSe2 NUs possessed excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, peroxidase (POD)-like activity, and selective inhibition of TrxR1. Furthermore, the photothermal effect of MoSe2 NUs can enhance their POD-like activity, allowing for accurate cancer treatment under near-infrared (NIR) light. MoSe2 NUs plus NIR and MoSe2 NUs alone exhibited in vivo tumor inhibition rates of 69.7% and 35.1%, respectively. Mechanistically, NIR-regulated MoSe2 NUs induced potent apoptosis of cancer cells by downregulating the TrxR1 and elevating intracellular ROS, thereby leading to caspase-3 cleavage.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated that MoSe2 NUs under NIR irradiation can precisely and efficiently treat breast cancer and have great potential for clinical application.Graphical

Photo-fenton catalysis degradation of 4-dodecylmorpholine by heterogeneous microprocessor Cu2O/SnO2

The increasing demand for potash has led to the increased use of 4-dodecyl morpholine (DMP), an important froth flotation agent for the extraction for potash extraction by “reverse flotation-cold crystallization”. As it is not easy to be stable and decompose in its natural state, it has seriously endangered the environment of salt lakes and the development of salt lake resources. The development of a safe and harmless catalytic system to accomplish the degradation and removal of DMP is urgent. Herein, A Cu2O/SnO2/PDA (CSP) nanoparticle with a synergistic effect of photocatalysis and Fenton-like catalysis was developed, and the CSP had a good photothermal conversion efficiency. Under 808 nm NIR irradiation, not only the catalyst activity was enhanced, but also the complexation rate of electron-hole pairs was reduced, which effectively increased the degradation efficiency of DMP (an increase of about 31.56 %). In addition, by analyzing the degradation products of DMP, the possible pathways of the DMP degradation process were proposed and, at the same time, the degradation catalytic system we used was proved to be safe and harmless. A new pathway is provided for the degradation and removal of DMP in the salt lake environment.

Turning Corn Stalk Trashes into a Photothermal Agent for Interfacial Solar Water Evaporation for Sustainable Water Purification

Biomass‐based photothermal materials have a higher photothermal conversion efficiency and contribute significantly to improved solar water evaporation systems. This work aims to transform corn stalk (CS) trash into efficient photothermal materials with centralized and less‐contact area water supply systems to achieve enhanced interfacial heat accumulation. We successfully synthesized cornstalk biochar synthesized via pyrolysis to maintain the environmental concern and is deposited onto a scalable, and cost‐effective (<1$) polyurethane foam (triangle shape, where the tip plays the wick and centralized water supply). The detailed characterizations validate the porous structure of CS biochar‐coated PU foam (CSB@PU), and enhance interfacial heat accumulation up to 47.8 °C under 1 kW m−2 solar irradiation which is endowed via thermal management of polystyrene foam (PS). This reproducible interfacial heat accumulation and sustainable evaporator bestow a water evaporation rate of up to 1.38 kg m−2 h−1, and solar‐to‐vapor conversion efficiency (84%) under one sun which is more efficient than other biomass‐derived evaporators. Inductively coupled plasma‐optical emission spectroscopy analysis validates the reductions of primary (Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) and heavy metal ion (Fe3+, Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+) concentrations in condensate, insights the potential of CSB@PU to advance the water treatment technologies.

Bone‐Induced Nanocomposite Coating with a “Sandwich” Structure

AbstractInfection‐induced bone defects present significant challenges in clinical bone regeneration, frequently leading to poor bone induction, recurring infections, and complications such as pain and chronic inflammation. This study introduces a novel Ti/Lignin‐Ag@PLL composite coating with a “sandwich” structure, designed to integrate pro‐adhesion, photothermal‐photodynamic antibacterial, and osteogenic properties. The Ti/Lignin‐Ag@PLL composite coating is fabricated using self‐assembly technology, in which Ag+ is reduced to silver nanoparticles (Ag‐NPs) by lignin, followed by Polylysine (PLL) grafting. Photothermal conversion efficiency is evaluated under near‐infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, while antibacterial activity is tested against E. coli and S. aureus. Biocompatibility is also assessed using vascular endothelial cells (VECs) and osteoblasts (OBs). The results indicate that the Ti/Lignin‐Ag@PLL coating demonstrates a 31% photothermal conversion efficiency and nearly 100% antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) under NIR irradiation for 10 min. Without irradiation, the antibacterial rates are 85% and 94%, respectively, after 24 h. Additionally, the coating significantly promotes cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenesis, as evidenced by the upregulation of Runx2 and Collagen I. This study uniquely contributes to the development of a multifunctional composite coating that effectively combines robust antibacterial properties with enhanced osteogenic potential, offering a promising solution for bone tissue repair and infection prevention.

Flexibility, malleability, and high mechanical strength phase change composite films for solar-thermal and electro-thermal energy storage

Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used in a range of energy storage applications due to high latent heat absorption and release capacities during phase change processes. There is still a lot to be done to resolve the inherent leakage, stiffness problems, and poor solar-thermal and electrical-thermal conversion capacities of PCMs to functionalize them. Here, a novel solid-solid phase change material (IGPCM) is created using block copolymerization. The IGPCM has a tunable enthalpy (from 58.16 to 99.60 J g−1) by adjusting the molecular weight of the PEG. The obtained IGPCM10K has high toughness (479.1 MJ/m3), excellent bending and malleability. Since IGPCM10K suffers from poor thermal conductivity, photo responsiveness, and electro-thermal conversion, carbon nanotubes (CNT) can be added to our IGPCM10K in a simple way to improve these issues. The thermal conductivity of IGPCM10K-CNT-3 is improved by 55.6 % compared to IGPCM10K. The photothermal conversion efficiency is 84.9 % at 300 mW/cm2. The electrothermal conversion efficiency is 82.3 % at 12 A. The prepared flexible PCM composites have super toughness, high enthalpy, excellent thermal conductivity, and photo-thermal and electro-thermal conversion capabilities, which will show great potential in future applications.

High salt-resistant and robust MXene@oleylamine/PET composite nonwoven for efficient and long-term solar desalination

2D transition metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides (MXenes) have received extensive attention in solar seawater desalination due to their hydrophilicity, 100 % photothermal conversion efficiency, and efficient light-trapping by enhancing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Nevertheless, the easily oxidizable characteristics of MXenes, along with salt accumulation and structural weakness impede their practical application in solar-driven interfacial evaporators. Herein, a hydrophobic MXene@oleylamine/polyethylene terephthalate (MXene@OAm/PET) nonwoven with long-term operational stability is fabricated via firmly chemical cross-linking between oleylamine (OAm) modified MXene (MXene@OAm) and NH2-PEG-COOH treated PET nonwoven (PEG-PET). The MXene@OAm endows excellent oxidation resistance and hydrophobicity. The prepared MXene@OAm/PET nonwoven which exhibits broad-spectrum solar absorption and high efficiency, can achieve an average evaporation rate in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at 1.26 kg·m−2·h−1 and no seeable salt deposition during 15 irradiation cycles for 8 h a day indicates its superior salt resistance and long-term stability. Most importantly, after being soaked in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 40 days, the evaporation rate of MXene@OAm/PET nonwoven still remains stable at around 1.22 kg·m−2·h−1, indicating the significant potential of this prepared nonwoven for long-term seawater desalination and its suitability for industrial applications. Even in industrial wastewater, the evaporation rate can reach 1.27 kg·m−2·h−1. This work demonstrates a successful strategy for achieving high efficiency, stability, and superior salt resistance, which can be potentially utilized in seawater desalination and wastewater treatment.
