Calcium Alginate Core–Shell Liquid Beads Encapsulated with Microalgae for Wastewater Treatment

Liquid beads are core–shell particles with a liquid core and a solid shell. Calcium alginate liquid beads have been emerging as a promising platform for cell encapsulation. These beads have demonstrated their capability of encapsulating and culturing a wide range of human cells for tissue engineering. However, a significant research gap remains in the application of alginate liquid beads for encapsulating photosynthetic microorganisms. Herein, fast‐growing microalgae strain Chlorella vulgaris is encapsulated into calcium alginate liquid beads to facilitate the removal of nutrients from wastewater, minimizing the risk of eutrophication. Liquid bead‐microalgae systems are prepared, using different calcium ion concentrations as crosslinking ions. It has been thoroughly characterized for their morphologies, cell growth patterns, nutrient removal capabilities, and overall stability throughout the wastewater treatment process, with upflow anaerobic sludge blanket effluent as the wastewater model. The results indicate that the liquid bead‐microalgae system with the highest calcium ion concentration (5%) performs more efficiently, exhibiting a well‐formed crosslinking structure, leading to rapid cell growth with the highest cell density and the most effective removal of nutrients. The findings from this study provide valuable insights for future optimization and upscaling efforts in wastewater treatment systems based on calcium alginate liquid beads.

Optimization and mechanism analysis of photosynthetic EPA production in Nannochloropsis salina: Evaluating the effect of temperature and nitrogen concentrations

Microalgae, recognized as sustainable and eco-friendly photosynthetic microorganisms, play a pivotal role in converting CO2 into value-added products. Among these, Nannochloropsis salina (Microchloropsis salina) stands out, particularly for its ability to produce eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a crucial omega-3 fatty acid with significant health benefits such as anti-inflammatory properties and cardiovascular health promotion. This study focused on optimizing the cultivation conditions of Nannochloropsis salina to maximize EPA production. We thoroughly investigated the effects of varying temperatures and nitrogen (NaNO3) concentrations on biomass, total lipid content, and EPA proportions. We successfully identified optimal conditions at an initial NaNO3 concentration of 1.28 g.L−1 and a temperature of 21 °C. This condition was further validated by response surface methodology, which resulted in the highest EPA productivity reported in batch systems (14.4 mg.L−1.day−1). Quantitative real-time PCR and transcriptomic analysis also demonstrated a positive correlation between specific gene expressions and enhanced EPA production. Through a comprehensive lipid analysis and photosynthetic pigment analysis, we deduced that the production of EPA in Nannochloropsis salina seemed to be produced by the remodeling of chloroplast membrane lipids. These findings provide crucial insights into how temperature and nutrient availability influence fatty acid composition in N. salina, offering valuable guidance for developing strategies to improve EPA production in various microalgae species.

Holed up, but thriving: Impact of multitrophic cryoconite communities on glacier elemental cycles

Cryoconite holes (water and sediment-filled depressions), found on glacier surfaces worldwide, serve as reservoirs of microbes, carbon, trace elements, and nutrients, transferring these components downstream via glacier hydrological networks. Through targeted amplicon sequencing of carbon and nitrogen cycling genes, coupled with functional inference-based methods, we explore the functional diversity of these mini-ecosystems within Antarctica and the Himalayas. These regions showcase distinct environmental gradients and experience varying rates of environmental change influenced by global climatic shifts. Analysis revealed a diverse array of photosynthetic microorganisms, including Stramenopiles, Cyanobacteria, Rhizobiales, Burkholderiales, and photosynthetic purple sulfur Proteobacteria. Functional inference highlighted the high potential for carbohydrate, amino acid, and lipid metabolism in the Himalayan region, where organic carbon concentrations surpassed those in Antarctica by up to 2 orders of magnitude. Nitrogen cycling processes, including fixation, nitrification, and denitrification, are evident, with Antarctic cryoconite exhibiting a pronounced capacity for nitrogen fixation, potentially compensating for the limited nitrate concentrations in this region. Processes associated with the respiration of elemental sulfur and inorganic sulfur compounds such as sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate, and sulfide suggest the presence of a complete sulfur cycle. The Himalayan region exhibits a higher potential for sulfur cycling, likely due to the abundant sulfate ions and sulfur-bearing minerals in this region. The capability for complete iron cycling through iron oxidation and reduction reactions was also predicted. Methanogenic archaea that produce methane during organic matter decomposition and methanotrophic bacteria that utilize methane as carbon and energy sources co-exist in the cryoconite, suggesting that these niches support the complete cycling of methane. Additionally, the presence of various microfauna suggests the existence of a complex food web. Collectively, these results indicate that cryoconite holes are self-sustaining ecosystems that drive elemental cycles on glaciers and potentially control carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and iron exports downstream.

Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria enhance microbial carbon utilization by modulating the microbial community composition in paddy soils of the Mollisols region

Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) are photosynthetic prokaryotic microorganisms capable of nitrogen fixation. They can be used as biofertilizers in paddy fields, thereby improving the rice tillering capacity and yield. To reveal the microbiological mechanisms by which nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria alter soil carbon storage, we conducted a field experiment using NFC as a partial substitute for nitrogen fertilizer in paddy fields in the Sanjiang Plain of Northeast China's Mollisols region. Using metagenomic sequencing technology and Biolog Ecoplate™ carbon matrix metabolism measurements, we explored the changes in the soil microbial community structure and carbon utilization in paddy fields. The results indicated that the replacement of nitrogen fertilizer with NFC predisposed the soil microbial community to host a great number of copiotrophic bacterial taxa, and Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were closely associated with the metabolism of soil carbon sources. Moreover, through co-occurrence network analysis, we found that copiotrophic bacteria clustered in modules that were positively correlated with the metabolic level of carbon sources. The addition of NFC promoted the growth of copiotrophic bacteria, which increased the carbon utilization level of soil microorganisms, improved the diversity of the microbial communities, and had a potential impact on the soil carbon stock. The findings of this study are helpful for assessing the impact of NFC on the ecological function of soil microbial communities in paddy fields in the black soil area of Northeast China, which is highly important for promoting sustainable agricultural development and providing scientific reference for promoting the use of algal-derived nitrogen fertilizers.

An upcycling bioprocess for sustainable aviation fuel production from food waste-derived greenhouse gases: Life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis

Biogas generated from food waste through anaerobic digestion is typically utilized for heat and electricity. However, recent developments in synthetic biology have enabled the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in biogas into desired products by microorganisms. This study introduced a novel bioroute for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using food waste in a carbon–neutral and cost-effective manner. Both CO2 and CH4 derived from food waste are sequentially bioconverted into lipids by photosynthetic and methanotrophic microorganisms, which are then upgraded into SAF. A comparative life cycle assessment was conducted, revealing that this proposed bioroute has a lower environmental impact than a thermo-route involving hydrothermal liquefaction. Furthermore, a techno-economic analysis of the bioroute was also performed to evaluate both the capital and operating costs, showcasing the feasibility of this concept with current cutting-edge technologies. With potential food waste disposal subsidies taken into consideration, the bioroute-based SAF could yield an internal rate of return of up to 38%, demonstrating its economic viability in the market. By leveraging food waste and innovative biotechnology, this bioroute has the potential to contribute to a more eco-friendly and economically sustainable aviation industry.

Bioprospecting photosynthetic microorganisms for the removal of endocrine disruptor compounds.

Endocrine disruption compounds can be found in various daily products, like pesticides, along with cosmetic and pharmaceutical commodities. Moreover, occurrence of EDCs in the wastewater alarms the urgency for their removal before discharge owing to the harmful effect for the environment and human health. Compared to implementation of physical and chemical strategies, cultivation of photosynthetic microorganisms has been acknowledged for their high efficiency and eco-friendly process in EDCs removal along with accumulation of valuable byproducts. During the process, photosynthetic microorganisms remove EDCs via photodegradation, bio-adsorption, -accumulation, and -degradation. Regarding their high tolerance in extreme environment, photosynthetic microorganisms have high feasibility for implementation in wastewater treatment plant. However, several considerations are critical for their scaling up process. This review discussed the potency of EDCs removal by photosynthetic microorganisms and focused on the efficiency, mechanism, challenge, along with the prospect. Details on the mechanism's pathway, accumulation of valuable byproducts, and recent progress in scaling up and application in real wastewater were also projected in this review.

Assessment of photosynthetic activity in dense microalgae cultures using oxygen production

Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms playing a pivotal role in primary production in aquatic ecosystems, sustaining the entry of carbon in the biosphere. Microalgae have also been recognized as sustainable source of biomass to complement crops. For this objective they are cultivated in photobioreactors or ponds at high cell density to maximize biomass productivity and lower the cost of downstream processes.Photosynthesis depends on light availability, that is often not constant over time. In nature, sunlight fluctuates over diurnal cycles and weather conditions. In high-density microalgae cultures of photobioreactors outdoors, on top of natural variations, microalgae are subjected to further complexity in light exposure. Because of the high-density cells experience self-shading effects that heavily limit light availability in most of the mass culture volume. This limitation strongly affects biomass productivity of industrial microalgae cultivation plants with important implications on economic feasibility.Understanding how photosynthesis responds to cell density is informative to assess functionality in the inhomogeneous light environment of industrial photobioreactors. In this work we exploited a high-sensitivity Clark electrode to measure microalgae photosynthesis and compare cultures with different densities, using Nannochloropsis as model organism. We observed that cell density has a substantial impact on photosynthetic activity, and demonstrated the reduction of the cell's light-absorption capacity by genetic modification is a valuable strategy to increase photosynthetic functionality on a chlorophyll-basis of dense microalgae cultures.

Nutritional and functional properties of photosynthetic microorganism proteins: A comparison with soy protein isolate and wheat protein

As a widely acknowledged source of sustainable food protein, there has been limited research on the functional properties of photosynthetic microorganism proteins (PsmPs) applied in food. The nutritional and functional attributes for meat analogue production of Spirulina platensis protein (SpirP), Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein (ChloP), and Schizochytrium sp. protein (SchiP) were investigated and compared with two widely utilized proteins: soy protein isolate (SPI) and wheat protein (WheaP). At a neutral pH, SpirP and SchiP exhibited high emulsifying activities of 69 and 66 m2/g, while ChloP (20 m2/g) was comparable to SPI (15 m2/g) and WheaP (19 m2/g). Their remarkable foaming capacity indicated their potentials to produce meat analogues with fibrous structures. The water absorption capacity of PsmPs (4.4–4.8 g water/g protein) was comparable to WheaP (4.7 g water/g protein), while the oil absorption capacity (3.7–4.4 g oil/g protein) was higher than SPI (2.7 g oil/g protein) and WheaP (3.3 g oil/g protein), implying their potential to produce juicy and tasty meat analogues. Besides, the heat-induced photosynthetic microorganism protein gels had stable structures. In summary, SpirP, ChloP, and SchiP emerge as outstanding protein sources and viable alternatives to SPI for the production of meat analogues.

Quantum dot-based light conversion strategy for customized cultivation of microalgae

Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms with the potential to mitigate the atmospheric greenhouse effect by carbon fixation. However, their growth is typically limited by light availability. A wavelength converter utilizing red, blue, and green quantum dots (QDs) was developed to optimize light quality for enhancing microalgal production. The growth, lipid content, and eicosapentaenoic acid titer of Nannochloropsis increased by 11.2%, 9.5%, and 15.5% with red QDs, respectively. The biomass and triacylglycerol content of Phaeodactylum tricornutum increased by 8.6% and 35.0%, respectively. Simultaneously, biodiesel production was accelerated in Nannochloropsis (20.2%) and P. tricornutum (11.6%), and improved with increased cetane number and reduced iodine value. Furthermore, red QDs increased the growth and biomass accumulation of Nannochloropsis under low light, while green QDs shielded Nannochloropsis from photoinhibition under high light. This customizable QD-based methodology overcomes microalgal light limitations, demonstrating a universally applicable approach to improve microalgal cultivation and biochemical component production.

Novel functional insights into the microbiome inhabiting marine plastic debris: critical considerations to counteract the challenges of thin biofilms using multi-omics and comparative metaproteomics

BackgroundMicrobial functioning on marine plastic surfaces has been poorly documented, especially within cold climates where temperature likely impacts microbial activity and the presence of hydrocarbonoclastic microorganisms. To date, only two studies have used metaproteomics to unravel microbial genotype–phenotype linkages in the marine ‘plastisphere’, and these have revealed the dominance of photosynthetic microorganisms within warm climates. Advancing the functional representation of the marine plastisphere is vital for the development of specific databases cataloging the functional diversity of the associated microorganisms and their peptide and protein sequences, to fuel biotechnological discoveries. Here, we provide a comprehensive assessment for plastisphere metaproteomics, using multi-omics and data mining on thin plastic biofilms to provide unique insights into plastisphere metabolism. Our robust experimental design assessed DNA/protein co-extraction and cell lysis strategies, proteomics workflows, and diverse protein search databases, to resolve the active plastisphere taxa and their expressed functions from an understudied cold environment.ResultsFor the first time, we demonstrate the predominance and activity of hydrocarbonoclastic genera (Psychrobacter, Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas) within a primarily heterotrophic plastisphere. Correspondingly, oxidative phosphorylation, the citrate cycle, and carbohydrate metabolism were the dominant pathways expressed. Quorum sensing and toxin-associated proteins of Streptomyces were indicative of inter-community interactions. Stress response proteins expressed by Psychrobacter, Planococcus, and Pseudoalteromonas and proteins mediating xenobiotics degradation in Psychrobacter and Pseudoalteromonas suggested phenotypic adaptations to the toxic chemical microenvironment of the plastisphere. Interestingly, a targeted search strategy identified plastic biodegradation enzymes, including polyamidase, hydrolase, and depolymerase, expressed by rare taxa. The expression of virulence factors and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance suggested pathogenic genera were active, despite representing a minor component of the plastisphere community.ConclusionOur study addresses a critical gap in understanding the functioning of the marine plastisphere, contributing new insights into the function and ecology of an emerging and important microbial niche. Water quality and microecosystem of water tanks in karst mountainous area, Southwest China.

Karst mountainous areas in Southwest China, the world's largest bare karst area, are faced with growing water shortages. Rainwater harvesting plays an important role in alleviating water shortage. However, there remains a substantial gap in the research regarding the water quality of tanks. Water samples were seasonally collected from ten tanks to investigate the physicochemical properties, microbial communities, and their key influencing factors. The result showed that pH, turbidity, chroma, DOC, and CODMn exceeded drinking water guidelines. The alkaline pH value and the deterioration of sensory properties was the main feature of tank water, from which the over-standard rate of the uncleaned water tanks was higher. Moreover, principal component analyses suggested that tank water quality was influenced by human activities, catchment areas, and material cycling processes within the tanks, of which in-tank microbial activities were the most important driving factors in water quality variation. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, and Verrucomicrobia were the predominant bacterial phyla in water tanks. Acinetobacter, Cyanobium-PCC-6307, CL500-29-marine-group, Candidatus-Aquiluna, and Exiguobacterium were the most abundant genera. The bacterial communities were significantly affected by the management practices. Higher relative abundance of Cyanobacteria and lower relative abundance of Proteobacteria was detected in the uncleaned tanks, which was a sign of tank water quality deterioration. The microbial community structure was closely related to the environmental factors. There was evidence that the water quality was affected by the existence of a microecosystem dominated by photosynthetic microorganisms in the water tanks. In addition, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, and Legionella identified as the potential opportunistic pathogenic genera were frequently detected but the relative abundances except Acinetobacter were low in the tanks. Overall, our findings indicated that management style influences water quality and bacterial communities of tank water.

The use of fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) for in situ microbial detection in complex mineral substrates.

The utility of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) for identifying bacteria in complex mineral matrices was investigated. Baseline signals from unlabelled Bacillus subtilis and Euglena gracilis, and Bacillus subtilis labelled with SYTO 9 were obtained using two-photon excitation at 730, 750 and 800nm, identifying characteristic lifetimes of photosynthetic pigments, unpigmented cellular autofluorescence, and SYTO 9. Labelled and unlabelled B. subtilis were seeded onto marble and gypsum samples containing endolithic photosynthetic cyanobacteria and the ability to distinguish cells from mineral autofluorescence and nonspecific dye staining was examined in parallel with ordinary multichannel confocal imaging. It was found that FLIM enabled discrimination of SYTO 9 labelled cells from background, but that the lifetime of SYTO 9 was shorter in cells on minerals than in pure culture under our conditions. Photosynthetic microorganisms were easily observed using both FLIM and confocal. Unlabelled, nonpigmented bacteria showed weak signals that were difficult to distinguish from background when minerals were present, though cellular autofluorescence consistent with NAD(P)H could be seen in pure cultures, and phasor analysis permitted detection on rocks. Gypsum and marble samples showed similar autofluorescence profiles, with little autofluorescence in the yellow-to-red range. Lifetime or time-gated imaging may prove a useful tool for environmental microbiology. LAY DESCRIPTION: The standard method of bacterial enumeration is to label the cells with a fluorescent dye and count them under high-power fluorescence microscopy. However, this can be difficult when the cells are embedded in soil and rock due to fluorescence from the surrounding minerals and dye binding to ambiguous features of the substrate. The use of fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) can disambiguate these signals and allow for improved detection of bacteria in environmental samples.

Diversity of Epiphytic Subaerial Algal Communities in Bangkok, Thailand, and Their Potential Bioindicator with Air Pollution

Epiphytic subaerial algae represent an assemblage of micro-organisms widely distributed in terrestrial environments, including urban environments. Urban habitats present many challenges for the survival of photosynthetic micro-organisms, yet many species of subaerial microalgae have been reported from these environments, demonstrating a high tolerance to the harsh conditions of urban environments. In this study, the epiphytic subaerial communities of five parks in the urban area of Bangkok were studied using a metabarcoding approach (sequencing of the 23S rDNA marker), with the goal of unraveling their diversity and assessing potential bioindicators with levels of air pollution. Diversity indexes were determined for the algal taxa detected, which were separated into groups corresponding to different collection sites by cluster analysis. Relationships between taxa and air pollutants were analyzed by PCA and the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). The results showed a high diversity of epiphytic subaerial algae. We recorded 101 taxa belonging to the Cyanophyta (70 taxa), Chlorophyta (21 taxa), Charophyta (5 taxa), Bacillariophyta (3 taxa), and Eustigmatophyta (2 taxa). The most abundant taxon was Chroococcidiopsis sp. 1, for which up to 13,254 sequences/cm2 were recorded. The Shannon–Weaver index ranged between 1.37 and 2.51, the Margalef index between 3.84 and 4.75, and the Pielou index between 0.30 and 0.54. The similarity index was between 8.00% and 64.82%, according to the cluster analysis results for the three groups. The PCA indicated that all air pollutants affected the diversity and abundance of epiphytic subaerial algae. Cyanothece sp. 2 was negatively related to O3 and positively related to NO2 and CO and is suggested as a potential bioindicator of air pollution.

Cyanobacteria as a Biocatalyst for Sustainable Production of Biofuels and Chemicals

The combustion of fossil fuels constitutes a significant catalyst for climate change, resulting in the annual release of about two billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2). The increase in CO2 emission is directly linked to a heightened occurrence of natural calamities and health-related issues. The substitution of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources is a fundamental approach to reduce the negative impacts caused by consumption of these nonrenewable energy resources. The utilisation of biological methodologies to produce environmentally friendly energy from renewable sources holds significant potential for the sustainable production of fuel. However, the cultivation of first- and second-generation biofuel crops presents a challenge, since they compete for limited cropland, hence constraining their overall viability. In contrast, photosynthetic microorganisms such as algae and cyanobacteria exhibit significant potential as third-generation biofuel catalysts, devoid of the limitations associated with contemporary biofuels. Cyanobacteria, a type of photosynthetic prokaryotes, exhibit significant potential for the direct conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into biofuels, chemicals, and various other valuable compounds. There has been a growing interest in the concept of utilising biological processes to convert carbon dioxide into fuels and chemicals. The introduction of a limited number of heterologous genes has the potential to confer upon cyanobacteria the capability to convert particular central metabolites into a diverse range of end products. The progress in the field of synthetic biology and genetic manipulation has enabled the manipulation of cyanobacteria to synthesise compounds that are not generally produced by these organisms in their natural environment. This study focuses on recent papers that employ various methodologies to engineer cyanobacteria for the purpose of producing high-value compounds, such as biofuels.

Recent progress in the characterization and application of exo-electrogenic microorganisms.

Exo-electrogenic microorganisms are characterized by their special metabolic capability of transferring metabolic electrons out of their cell, into insoluble external electron acceptors such as iron or manganese oxides and electrodes, or vice versa take up electron from electrodes. Their conventional application is primarily limited to microbial fuel cells for electrical power generation and microbial electrolysis cells for the production of value-added products such as biohydrogen, biomethane and hydrogen peroxide. The utility of exo-electrogenic organisms has expanded into many other applications in recent times. Such examples include microbial desalination cells, microbial electro-synthesis cells producing value-added chemicals such as bio-butanol and their applications in other carbon sequestration technologies. Additionally, electrochemically-active organisms are now beginning to be employed in biosensor applications for environmental monitoring. Additionally, the utility of biocathodes in bio-electrochemical systems is also a novel application in catalyzing the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction to enhance their electrochemical performance. Advances have also been made in the expansion and use of other organisms such as the usage of photosynthetic microorganisms for the fabrication of self-sustained bio-electrochemical systems. This review attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of the state-of the art of exo-electrogenic organisms and their novel utility in bioelectrochemical systems.

IMMOBILIZING MICROALGAE IN HYBRID MATRICES AS A GREEN TECHNOLOGY FOR NATURAL GAS SWEETENING USING NOVEL STATIC SYSTEM

Photosynthetic microorganisms have been widely studied as an alternative technology for CO2 capture. Aiming to overcome some operational challenges in the application of these microorganisms for gas treatment on a large scale, the immobilization of microalgae in solid matrices emerges as an alternative to facilitate effective management of microalgae culture during harvesting process. In this work, different matrices for microalgae immobilization composed of silica/alginate were obtained varying silica precursors. The synthesized materials were characterized in terms of their specific surface area, cell viability, transparency and physical-chemical properties. Additionally, a new methodology was developed to evaluate the CO2 capture by microalgae using a pressurized system with natural gas mixture. Tests were carried out exploring the influence of some variables, such as headspace volume, cell concentration, stirring and pressure. Once the optimized parameters were established, the amount of CO2 captured by immobilized microalgae was investigated for 7 days by determining the CO2 relative concentrations using gas chromatography. The results of immobilized microalgae showed levels of CO2 removal of 41.4%. This work proved the potential application of the studied biomaterial for natural gas processing, making even more feasible the adoption of this technology for selective capture of CO2 on an industrial scale.

MICROALGAE: A SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY IN THE TRANSFORMATION AND OBTAINING OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. The present review presents the biotechnological potential of microalgae, highlighting its applications in biofuels, bioremediation, production of bioactive compounds, biocatalysts, and biofertilizers. Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that combine characteristics of plants and heterotrophic microorganisms, such as yeasts, bacteria, and fungi. They can be considered biotechnological agents of extreme versatility and metabolic adaptability. Its photosynthetic efficiency can absorb large volumes of anthropogenic CO2 and convert it into biomass rich in compounds of high biological and energetic value, enabling the development of sustainable bioremediation processes and the production of third-generation biofuels and biofertilizers. In addition, its biomass has aroused interest in obtaining compounds with biological action, such as carotenoids, mycosporine-like amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, sterols, phycocolloids, carbohydrates, and proteins. The biotechnological potential of microalgae does not end with the production and extraction of its biomass. Its dynamic and adaptive metabolism allows its use in the biotransformation of xenobiotic substrates and the production of compounds of chemical and pharmaceutical interest. In this perspective, microalgae have application qualities as a biotechnological platform in developing synergistic processes between the environment, society, and industry, thus contributing to the expansion and use of Green Chemistry and strengthening the circular economy.

Effects of ultraviolet and photosynthetically active radiation on morphogenesis, antioxidants and photoprotective defense mechanism in a hot-spring cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain VKB02

The continuous increase in global temperature and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) causes profound impacts on the growth and physiology of photosynthetic microorganisms. The hot-spring cyanobacteria have a wide range of mitigation mechanisms to cope up against current unsustainable environmental conditions. In the present investigation, we have explored the indispensable mitigation strategies of an isolated hot-spring cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain VKB02 under simulated ultraviolet (UV-A, UV-B) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The adaptive morphological changes were more significantly observed under PAB (PAR, UV-A, and UV-B) exposure as compared to P and PA (PAR and UV-A) irradiations. PAB exposure also exhibited a marked decline in pigment composition and photosynthetic efficiency by multi-fold increment of free radicals. To counteract the oxidative stress, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants defense were significantly enhanced many folds under PAB exposure as compared to the control. In addition, the cyanobacterium has also produced shinorine as a strong free radicals scavenger and excellent UV absorber for effective photoprotection against UV radiation. Therefore, the hot-spring cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain VKB02 has unique defense strategies for survival under prolonged lethal UVR conditions. This study will help in the understanding of environment-induced defense strategies and production of highly value-added green photo-protectants for commercial applications.

Graphene and graphene–cellulose nanocrystal composite films for sustainable anodes in biophotovoltaic devices

This work demonstrates the innovative utilisation of sheer exfoliated few-layer graphene and graphene–CNC films as eco-friendly electrodes for efficient current extraction from cyanobacteria, promising advancements in biophotovoltaic applications.

Synergistic molecular mechanism of degradation in dye wastewater by Rhodopseudomonas palustris intimately coupled carbon nanotube - Silver modified titanium dioxide photocatalytic composite with sodium alginate

The intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB), which combined the advantages of high oxidation capacity of photocatalysis and high mineralization rate of biodegradation, has demonstrated excellent removal performance in the degradation of azo dyes with highly toxic, refractory, mutagenic and carcinogenic. In order to explore the metagenomics mechanism of the ICPB system, a novel ICPB was prepared by coupling Rhodopseudomonas palustris (R. Palustris), carbon nanotube - silver modified titanium dioxide photocatalytic composite (CNT-Ag -TiO2, CAT) and sodium alginate (SA) (R. palustris/CAT@SA, R-CAT). Metagenomics sequencing was used to investigate the molecular mechanism of adaptation and degradation of dyes by photosynthetic microorganisms and the adaptive and synergistic interaction between photosynthetic microorganisms and photocatalyst. Experiments on the adaptability and degradability of photosynthetic microorganisms have proved that low concentration azo dyes could be utilized as carbon sources for growth of photosynthetic microorganisms. Metagenomics sequencing revealed that R. palustris was the main degrading bacterium in photosynthetic microorganisms and the functional genes related to carbohydrate metabolism, biological regulation and catalytic activity were abundant. It was found that the addition of photocatalyst significantly up-regulated the functional genes related to the catabolic process, electron transport, oxidoreductase activity and superoxide metabolism of organic matter in the photosynthetic microorganisms. Moreover, many key gene such as alpha-amylase, 1-acyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase, aldehyde dehydrogenase enrichment in microbial basal metabolism, such as enoyl-CoA hydratase, malate dehydrogenase, glutathione S-transferase enrichment in degrading azo dyes and electron transport, and many key gene such as undecaprenyl-diphosphatase, carbon storage regulator, DNA ligase enrichment in response to dyes and photocatalysts were discovered. These findings would contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of degradation of dye wastewater by ICPB system, a series of genes was produced to adapt to environmental changes, and played synergistic role in terms of intermediate product degradation and electron transfer for degrading azo dyes. The photosynthetic microorganisms might be a promising microorganism for constructing ICPB system.
