Optimal photoelectron circular dichroism of a model chiral system.

We optimize the internuclear geometry and electronic structure of a model chiral system to achieve a maximal photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) in its one-photon ionization by circularly polarized light. The electronic structure calculations are performed by the single center method, while the optimization is done using quantum alchemy employing a Taylor series expansion. Thereby, the effect of bond lengths and uncompensated charge distributions on the chiral response of the model is investigated theoretically in some detail. It is demonstrated that manipulating a chiral asymmetry of the ionic potential may enhance the dichroic parameter (i.e., the PECD) of the randomly oriented model system well beyond β1 = 25%. Furthermore, we demonstrate that quantum alchemy is applicable to PECD despite the unusually strong coupling of spatial and electronic degrees of freedom and discuss the relative impact of the individual degrees of freedom in this model system. We define the necessary conditions for the computational design of PECD for real (non-model) chiral molecules using our approach.

Photoelectron Circular Dichroism in the Spin-Polarized Spectra of Chiral Molecules.

We studied strong-field multiphoton ionization of 1-iodo-2-methylbutane enantiomers with 395nm circularly polarized laser pulses experimentally and theoretically. For randomly oriented molecules, we observe spin polarization up to about 15%, which is independent of the molecular enantiomer. Our experimental findings are explained theoretically as an intricate interplay between three contributions from HOMO, HOMO-1, and HOMO-2, which are formed of 5p-electrons of the iodine atom. For uniaxially oriented molecules, our theory demonstrates even larger spin polarization. Moreover, we predict a sizable enantiosensitive photoelectron circular dichroism of about 10%, which is different for different spin states of photoelectrons.

Conformer-Selective Photoelectron Circular Dichroism.

Conformational flexibility and chirality both play a key role in molecular recognition. It is therefore very useful to develop spectroscopic methods that simultaneously probe both properties. It has been theoretically predicted that photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) should be very sensitive to conformational isomerism. However, experimental proof has been less forthcoming and only exists for a very few favorable cases. Here, we present a new PECD scheme based on resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization (RE2PI) using UV/Vis nanosecond laser excitations. The spectral resolution obtained thereby guarantees conformer-selectivity by inducing resonant conformer-specific ππ* S1←S0 transitions. We apply this experimental scheme to the study of chiral 1-indanol, which exists in two conformers linked by a ring inversion and defined by the position of the hydroxyl group, namely axial and equatorial. We show that the PECD of the equatorial and axial forms considerably differ in sign, magnitude and shape. We also discuss the influence of the total ionization energy, vibronic excitation of intermediate and final states, and relative polarization of the excitation and ionization lasers. Conformer-specificity adds a new dimension to the applications of PECD in analytical chemistry addressing now the general case of floppy systems.

Preparation, characterization, stability and bioactivity of fermented Tremella polysaccharide-Fe3+ complex

The second-generation of iron supplements is known for its instability, thus leading to the emergence of polysaccharide iron complexes as a novel third-generation iron supplement, which has garnered significant scholarly attention. Yet, there is a limited body of academic literature on the stability and biological activity of polysaccharide iron complexes. The objective of this study is to investigate the stability, release of Fe3+, and biological activity of fermented Tremella polysaccharide after complexation with Fe3+ in order to address the research gaps in this field. The combination of Fe3+ and polysaccharide was confirmed successful by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The release rate of the fermented Tremella polysaccharide-Fe3+ complex in simulated gastric fluid for 0.5 h was found to be 76% ± 2%, indicating a favorable release profile. Additionally, the complex exhibited excellent viscosity stability, while the introduction of Fe3+ into Tremella polysaccharide resulted in improved thermal and solution stability. Moreover, the complex exhibits excellent antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity in vitro. The results demonstrate that the complex possesses exceptional stability and dual efficacy in terms of iron replenishment and nutrition, thus positioning it as a potential key player among novel iron supplements.

Theoretical study of time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism in the photodissociation of a chiral molecule.

Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), the forward-backward asymmetry of the photoelectron angular distribution when ionizing randomly oriented chiral molecules with circularly polarized light, is an established method to investigate chiral properties of molecules in their electronic ground state. Here, we develop a computational strategy for predicting time-resolved PECD (TRPECD) of chemical reactions and demonstrate the method on the photodissociation of 1-iodo-2-methylbutane. Our approach combines multi-configurational quantum-chemical calculations of the relevant potential-energy surfaces of the neutral and singly ionized molecule with ab initio molecular-dynamics (AIMD) calculations. The PECD parameters along the AIMD trajectories are calculated with the aid of electron-molecule scattering calculations based on the Schwinger variational principle implemented in ePolyScat. Our calculations have been performed for two probe wavelengths (133 and 160 nm) accessible through low-order harmonic generation in gases. Our results show that the TRPECD is a highly sensitive probe of photochemical reaction dynamics. Most interestingly, the TRPECD is found to change sign multiple times along the photodissociation coordinate, in agreement with recent experiments on CHBrFI [Svoboda et al., "Femtosecond photoelectron circular dichroism of chemical reactions," Sci. Adv. 8, eabq2811 (2022)]. The computational protocol introduced in the present work is general and readily applicable to other chiral photochemical processes.

Induced photoelectron circular dichroism onto an achiral chromophore

An achiral chromophore can acquire a chiral spectroscopic signature when interacting with a chiral environment. This so-called induced chirality is documented in electronic or vibrational circular dichroism, which arises from the coupling between electric and magnetic transition dipoles. Here, we demonstrate that a chiroptical response is also induced within the electric dipole approximation by observing the asymmetric scattering of a photoelectron ejected from an achiral chromophore in interaction with a chiral host. In a phenol–methyloxirane complex, removing an electron from an achiral aromatic π orbital localised on the phenol moiety results in an intense and opposite photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) for the two enantiomeric complexes with (R) and (S) methyloxirane, evidencing the long-range effect (~5 Å) of the scattering chiral potential. This induced chirality has important structural and analytical implications, discussed here in the context of growing interest in laser-based PECD, for in situ, real time enantiomer determination.

Spin-dependent charge transmission through chiral 2T3N self-assembled monolayer on Au.

A gold surface is functionalized by chemisorption of the enantiopure N,N'-bis-[2,2';5',2″]tert-thiophene-5-yl methylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (2T3N), a chiral oligothiophene derivative, via overnight incubation in a 2T3N ethanol solution. The Au|2T3N interface is characterized by x-ray photoelectron circular dichroism and comparing x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and electro-desorption results. Charge transmission at the Au|2T3N| solution interface is characterized by recording the cyclic voltammetry of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reversible redox couple, finding a charge transfer rate constant, k°, variation from 1 × 10-1 to 3.3 × 10-2 cm s-1, when comparing the bare Au and the Au|2T3N interfaces, respectively. The "anomalous" high value of k° found for the chiral Au|2T3N interface can be rationalized on the basis of the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect, as further proved by magnetic-conductive atomic force microscopy measurements at room temperature. A spin polarization of about 30% is found.

Time-Resolved Chiral X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy with Transiently Enhanced Atomic Site Selectivity: A Free-Electron Laser Investigation of Electronically Excited Fenchone Enantiomers

Chirality is widespread in nature, playing a fundamental role in biochemical processes and in the origin of life itself. The observation of dynamics in chiral molecules is crucial for the understanding and control of the chiral activity of photoexcited states. One of the most promising techniques for the study of photoexcited chiral systems is time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TR-PECD), which offers an intense and sensitive probe for vibronic and geometric molecular structure as well as electronic structures, and their evolution on a femtosecond timescale. However, the nonlocal character of the PECD effect, which is imprinted during the electron scattering off the molecule, makes the interpretation of TR-PECD experiments challenging. In this respect, core photoionization is known to allow site and chemical sensitivity to photelectron spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate that TR-PECD utilizing core-level photoemission enables probing the chiral electronic structure and its relaxation dynamics with atomic site sensitivity. Following UV pumped excitation to a 3s Rydberg state, fenchone enantiomers (C10H16O) were probed on a femtosecond scale using circularly polarized soft x-ray light pulses provided by the free-electron laser FERMI. C 1s binding energy shifts caused by the redistribution of valence electron density in this 3s-valence-Rydberg excitation allowed us to measure transient PECD chiral responses with an enhanced C atom site selectivity compared to that achievable in the ground state molecule. Spectroscopic fingerprints profiling the polysaccharide/protein/humic architecture of stratified extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in activated sludge

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), with a stratified structure including tightly-bound EPS (TB-EPS), loosely-bound EPS (LB-EPS), and soluble EPS (S-EPS) surrounding the microbial cells, are known to vitally affect the physicochemical and biological functions of activated sludge in wastewater treatment. Polysaccharides (PS), proteins (PN), and humic acids (HA) are key components of EPS but their roles in constructing the multi-layer architecture are still unclear. This study explored the EPS characteristics in relation to the components using spectroscopic fingerprinting techniques. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra demonstrated stark difference between TB-EPS and other EPS. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (FEEM) and apparent quantum yield revealed further detailed differences. Fluorescence quotient analysis highlighted the dominance of TB-EPS, LB-EPS, and S-EPS in the excitation/emission wavelength (Ex/Em) region of Em = 350–400 nm, Em > 400 nm, and low-Stokes shift band (Em − Ex < 25 nm), respectively. Wavelength-wise prediction of the FEEM intensity was achieved through multiple linear regression against the chemical composition and variance partitioning analysis witnessed binary interactions of PS×HA and PS×PN in S-EPS, PN×HA and PS×PN in LB-EPS, and ternary interaction of PS×PN×HA in TB-EPS as well as the wavelength-specific fluorescence responses of these interactions. Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectra, and circular dichroism spectra corroborated the differences in primary, secondary, and tertiary structures across the EPS layers. Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry detected molecular fragments confirming the multi-component hybridization among PS, PN, and HA. This study demonstrates a spectroscopic approach to sensitively fingerprint the fine structure of EPS, which has the potential for rapid monitoring of EPS and related sludge properties in wastewater treatment systems.

Photoelectron circular dichroism in fenchone by short coherent broadband laser pulses

Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) of fenchone induced by short coherent broadband laser pulses is studied theoretically using the time-dependent single-center method. In particular, we investigate the chiral response to circularly polarized pulses with a sine-squared energy spectrum between 1 and 3 eV. We consider nonchirped and differently chirped pulses of a moderate peak intensity of $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{12}\phantom{\rule{3.33333pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{W}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ and a nonchirped pulse of a higher peak intensity of $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{14}\phantom{\rule{3.33333pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{W}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ leading to a strong-field ionization. Thereby, effects of the frequency ordering and pulse intensity are investigated in some detail. The present theoretical study predicts a substantial multiphoton PECD of fenchone, which can be manipulated by tailoring a spectral phase and intensity profile of a single coherent broadband laser pulse.

Velocity-map imaging of photoelectron circular dichroism in non-volatile molecules using a laser-based desorption source.

We present an initial demonstration of a velocity-map imaging (VMI) experiment using a back-irradiation laser-based desorption source directly integrated into the electrode assembly. This has the potential to greatly expand the utility of the popular VMI approach by permitting its use with high density plumes of non-volatile molecular samples. Photoelectron circular dichroism measurements on the phenylalanine molecule using 400 nm multiphoton ionization are used to illustrate this novel method, revealing forward-backward emission asymmetries on the order of 7%.

Pump-probe spectroscopy of chiral vibrational dynamics.

A planar molecule may become chiral upon excitation of an out-of-plane vibration, changing its handedness during half a vibrational period. When exciting such a vibration in an ensemble of randomly oriented molecules with an infrared laser, half of the molecules will undergo the vibration phase-shifted by π compared to the other half, and no net chiral signal is observed. This symmetry can be broken by exciting the vibrational motion with a Raman transition in the presence of a static electric field. Subsequent ionization of the vibrating molecules by an extreme ultraviolet pulse probes the time-dependent net handedness via the photoelectron circular dichroism. Our proposal for pump-probe spectroscopy of molecular chirality, based on quantum-chemical theory and discussed for the example of the carbonyl chlorofluoride molecule, is feasible with current experimental technology.

Imprinting Chirality on Atoms Using Synthetic Chiral Light Fields.

Atoms are usually thought of as achiral objects. However, one can construct superpositions of atomic states that are chiral [1]. Here, we show how to excite such superpositions with tailored light fields both in the weak-field and strong-field regimes, using realistic laser parameters. First, we use time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations to demonstrate the creation of a time-dependent bound chiral wave packet in sodium atoms. Second, we show how the time-dependent handedness of this wave packet can be probed by photoelectron circular dichroism, in spite of the central symmetry of the core potential. Third, we use time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations to show how chirality can be directly imprinted on a photoelectron wave packet created by strong-field ionization and introduce an unambiguous chiral measure that allows us to characterize its handedness.

AbstractPhotoelektronen‐Zirkulardichroismus (im folgenden PECD, nach der englischen Bezeichnung) zeigt sich als eine Vorwärts‐Rückwärts‐Asymmetrie in der Photoemission nicht‐razemischer Proben, ausgelöst durch zirkular polarisiertes Licht. Gegenüber anderen chiroptischen Methoden hat die PECD‐Spektroskopie potentielle analytische Vorteile bei der Differenzierung chiraler Substanzen, da sie sehr sensitiv auf das chirale Potential von Molekülen ist. Anionen können für die PECD‐Spektroskopie entsprechend ihrer Masse selektiert werden und ihr Einsatz eröffnet Wege zu einfachen experimentellen Aufbauten, die auf handlichen (table‐top) Lasern basieren. Die Nachweise für den PECD von Anionen sind noch rar und das genaue Verständnis der Triebkräfte, welche die PECD‐Elektronendynamik im Photodetachment bestimmen, sind unklar. Hier zeigen wir den PECD‐Effekt im Photodetachment von massenselektierten, deprotonierten 1‐Indanol‐Anionen. Der PECD wird über einen großen Bereich von Photonenenergien mit einem Velocity‐Map‐Imaging(VMI)‐Photoelektronenspektrometer energieaufgelöst analysiert. Ein PECD von bis zu 11 % wird nachgewiesen, was vergleichbar mit gemessenen Werten für neutrale Moleküle ist.

Imaging Photoelectron Circular Dichroism in the Detachment of Mass-Selected Chiral Anions.

Photoelectron Circular Dichroism (PECD) is a forward-backward asymmetry in the photoemission from a non-racemic sample induced by circularly polarized light. PECD spectroscopy has potential analytical advantages for chiral discrimination over other chiroptical methods due to its increased sensitivity to the chiral potential of the molecule. The use of anions for PECD spectroscopy allows for mass-selectivity and provides a path to simple experimental schemes that employ table-top light sources. Evidence of PECD for anions is limited, and insight into the forces that govern PECD electron dynamics in photodetachment is absent. Here, we demonstrate a PECD effect in the photodetachment of mass-selected deprotonated 1-indanol anions. By utilizing velocity map imaging photoelectron spectroscopy with a tunable light source, we determine the energy-resolved PECD over a wide range of photon energies. The observed PECD reaches up to 11 %, similar to what has been measured for neutral species.

Ground-State Photoelectron Circular Dichroism of Methyl p-Tolyl Sulfoxide by Single-Photon Ionisation from a Table-Top Source.

Single-photon ionisation of enantiopure methyl p-tolyl sulfoxide by circularly polarised light at 133 nm shows remarkably strong photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), which has been measured in a velocity-map-imaging spectrometer. Both enantiomers were measured, each showing a PECD of a similar magnitude (ca. 25 %). These experiments were carried out with a tabletop high-harmonic source with a photon energy of 9.3 eV, capable of ionising the electronic ground state of most organic and inorganic molecules. Ab-initio scattering calculations provide a theoretical value of the expected chiral asymmetry parameter, and agree very well with the measured values once orbital mixing via configuration interaction in the cation is taken into account. This study demonstrates a simple photoionisation scheme that can be readily applied to study the time-resolved PECD of photochemical reactions and suggests a pronounced sensitivity of PECD to electronic configuration interaction in the cation.

Femtosecond photoelectron circular dichroism of chemical reactions.

Understanding the chirality of molecular reaction pathways is essential for a broad range of fundamental and applied sciences. However, the current ability to probe chirality on the time scale of primary processes underlying chemical reactions remains very limited. Here, we demonstrate time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TRPECD) with ultrashort circularly polarized vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) pulses from a tabletop source. We demonstrate the capabilities of VUV-TRPECD by resolving the chirality changes in time during the photodissociation of atomic iodine from two chiral molecules. We identify several general key features of TRPECD, which include the ability to probe dynamical chirality along the complete photochemical reaction path, the sensitivity to the local chirality of the evolving scattering potential, and the influence of electron scattering off dissociating photofragments. Our results are interpreted by comparison with high-level ab-initio calculations of transient PECDs from molecular photoionization calculations. Our experimental and theoretical techniques define a general approach to femtochirality.

Photoelectron Circular Dichroism of Electrosprayed Gramicidin Anions.

Many sophisticated approaches for analyzing properties of chiral matter have been developed in recent years. But in general, the available chiroptical methods are limited to either solvated or small gaseous molecules. Studying the chirality of large biopolymers in the gas phase, including aspects of the secondary structure, becomes accessible by combining the electrospray ionization technique with chiroptical detection protocols. Here, laser-induced photodetachment from gramicidin anions, a peptide consisting of 15 amino acids has been investigated. The angular distribution of photoelectrons is demonstrated to be sensitive to the substitution of protons by cesium ions, which is accompanied by a conformational change. The photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is -0.5% for bare gramicidin, whereas gramicidin with several Cs+ ions attached exhibits a PECD of +0.5%. The results are complemented and supported by ion mobility studies. The presented approach offers the prospect of studying chirality and the secondary structure of various biopolymers.

Generation and complete polarimetry of ultrashort circularly polarized extreme-ultraviolet pulses.

The generation of ultrashort circularly polarized pulses in the extreme-ultraviolet spectral range has recently attracted considerable interest for applications in time-resolved circular-dichroism experiments. Here, we demonstrate a simple approach to generate near-circularly polarized femtosecond pulses in the vacuum-ultraviolet. The ellipticity of the generated light can be continuously tuned from linear to near-circular, as demonstrated by detailed polarimetry measurements. Combining optical polarimetry with photoelectron circular-dichroism (PECD) measurements, we demonstrate a novel approach to characterizing the polarization state of light in terms of all four Stokes parameters. For photon energies of 9.3 eV, we obtained S3 = 0.96 ± 0.02 and a degree of polarization of 97±2%, i.e. the highest values reported from any harmonic-generation source so far. This source is directly applicable to circular-dichroism experiments, also enabling time-resolved PECD in the extreme-ultraviolet, a general approach to probing time-dependent chirality during chemical processes on (sub)-femtosecond time scales.
