Phosphorustrihalides react with Na2[M2(CO)10] (M = Cr. Mo, W) to give phosphinidene complexes [(CO)5M]2P-Hal. These species are transformed into phosphorus(+I)-cheiate compounds [XXX]. = tropolonate or 8-hydroxychinolate.

The question of ‘open’ or ‘closed’ bimetallic phosphinidene (and heavier congeneric) complexes

The reaction of ArPCl2(Ar = 2,4,6-But3C6H2) with Na[Co2(µ2-CO)2(η-C5H5)2] affords the ‘open’ phosphinidene complex, Co2(µ2-PAr)(η-C5H5)2(CO)2, the structure of which has been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Evidence is presented for the intermediacy of a terminal phosphinidene complex, [2,4,6-( t-Bu) 3C 6H 2]PFe(CO) 4, in the reaction of [2,4,6-( t-Bu) 3C 6H 2]PCO with Fe 2(CO) 9.

The cathodic reduction of the trihalophosphane complexes (CO) 5CrPX 3 ( 1a, X = Cl; 1b, X = Br) leads to the binuclear complexes (CO) 5 Cr(X 2PPX 2)Cr(CO) 5, ( 2a, X = Cl; 2b, X = Br). Reductive dehalogenation of coordinated organodihalophosphanes, (CO) 5CrPRX 2 ( 3a, R = Me, X = Cl; 3b, R = Ph, X = Cl; 3c, R = Me, X = Br; 3d, R = Ph, X = Br), in the presence of dimethyldisulfane yields bis(methylthio)organophosphane complexes, (CO) 5CrPR(SCH 3) 2 ( 5a, R = Me; 5b, R = Ph). The phosphinidene complexes (CO) 5 CrPR are discussed as the reactive intermediates. The organodibromophosphane complexes 3c and 3d can also be partially reduced in the presence of dimethyldisulfane, and (CO) 5CrPBrR(SCH 3) ( 7a, R = Me; 7b, R = Ph) is obtained. Radical intermediates are probable.

Phosphido bridged iron carbonyl hydrides: synthesis and X-ray structure of (µ-H)2Fe3(CO)8(µ-PPh2)2

Reaction of the carbonyl anion Fe4(CO)132– with strong acid in the presence of diphenylphosphine affords the trinuclear phosphido bridged cluster (µ-H)2Fe3(CO)8(µ-PPh2)2(1) which has been fully characterized by X-ray diffraction; ready intramolecular elimination of benzene from (1) at room temperature in the presence of CO yields the phosphinidene complex Fe3(CO)9(µ3-PPh)2(2).

Stabilization of 7-phosphanorbornadienes by complexation; X-ray crystal structure of 2,3-bis(methoxycarbonyl)-5,6-dimethyl-7-phenyl-7-phosphanorbornadiene(pentacarbonyl)-chromium

The reaction of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate with LM(CO)5 complexes (L = 1 -substituted-3,4-dimethyl-phosphole; M = Cr, Mo, W) provides an easy access to stable 7-phosphanornadiene complexes, the X-ray crystal of one of which is reported; the 31P resonance of these species appears at very low field (ca. 200–260 p.p.m.) and mass spectral and structural data suggest that they may be efficient generators for the still unknown terminal phosphinidene complexes.
